Rebuild: L.A. Memorial Coliseum 3A Studio, Sci-Arc Fall 2011, Instructor: Gregory Walsh, Partner: Billy Diep The project concerns the upgrading of the LA Memorial Coliseum for continued use as a venue for major athletic events as well as proposing additional uses for the site in order to increase both the frequency of stadium events and to intensify the daily use of Exposition Park. Opened in 1923, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is one of the great athletic venues in the United States. Host to two Olympiad and countless major events, its peristyle end and torch are icons of Los Angeles. Over the years, Exposition Park and the LA Coliseum have undergone a number of transformations that have led to its current state of under use and decay. The park will soon be served by newsubway transit line that will open in 2012 on Exposition Boulevard and the California Science Center was awarded a space shuttle, requiring new facilities. With the proposed transfer of management to from the Coliseum Commission to the University of Southern California, there is a tremendous opportunity to transform the LA Memorial Coliseum into a state-of-the-art athletic facility for the 21st century, establish a mix-use strategy and contribute to the overall revitalization of Exposition Park.
