WELCOME TO THE 5TH EDITION OF VOID INTERNATIONAL ANIMATION FILM FESTIVAL! Welcome to VOID 2020. Entering our fifth year, we have thought long and hard on how to best celebrate such an important milestone. While staying true to the core of the festival, we have dreamt big and expanded our programme in new and exciting ways.

Velkommen til VOID 2020. På vej ind i vores femte år, har vi tænkt længe over, hvordan vi bedst har kunnet markere så vigtig en milepæl. Vi har drømt stort og udvidet vores program på nye og spændende måder, samtidig med at vi er forblevet tro mod festivalens ånd.

The 10 festival days are filled with the best animation the world has to offer and there is something for everyone. You can explore the golden age of Hungarian animation, experience the full breadth of contemporary Chinese animation in the blockbuster ‘White Snake’ and ‘S He’ or explore our many short film programmes, showcasing both emerging artists and retrospectives of two of the most important women in American animation: Sally Cruikshank and Suzan Pitt.

De 10 festivaldage er fyldt med det bedste, animationsverdenen kan byde på - og der er noget for alle. But this year VOID is so much more than just screenings. We have organized a series of masterclasses and talks featuring industry veterans, that will take you behind the scenes of some of the most acclaimed and audacious works of the last years. The masterclasses are a unique opportunity to meet and interact with the creators in person. The sessions open for everyone and we hope you will check them out. Enter the world of animation - which was made possible with the aid of our sponsors, partners, advisors, supporters, and with the indispensable team of passionate volunteers.

VOID International Animation Film Festival is a 10-day festival running from Jan 30 - Feb 8. Please note that all films at Cinemateket are in English or with English subtitles. One ticket costs 90 dkk, but students and members of Cinemateket can buy tickets for 55 dkk. All feature films are introduced by a short film from this year’s programme of up to 15 minutes in length.

VOID International Animation Film Festival varer 10 dage, fra 30. jan til 8. feb. Alle film vises i Cinemateket på engelsk eller med engelske undertekster. MEET THE JURY MEMBERS

MARTIN WIKLUND

ANNEMETTE KARPEN Annemette Karpen’s contribution to Danish animation culture is staggering. In 1999 shefounded a chidren’s animation festival, which was integrated into the BUSTER film festival in 2001. Following that she became a driving force behind Project ANIMA, a mobile animation workshop that visits schools and teaches animation to the next generation. Furthermore, she has contributed a great deal of knowledge, writing a myriad of articles on animation as well as co-writing ‘Dansk tegnefilm gennem 100 år’.

In 2019 Martin Wiklund and Ulysse Lefort won The Lejf Marcussen Award for their strongly hallucinatory commercial for the Michelin-starred restaurant La Grenouillère, ‘Danse exquise’. Wiklund has been part of Collectif Quart Avant Poing since 2009 and has co-directed ‘5 Years After The War’ which screened at Odense International Animation Film Festival.

ULYSSE LEFORT In 2019 Ulysse Lefort and Martin Wiklund won The Lejf Marcussen Award for their strongly hallucinatory restaurant commercial for La Grenouillère, ‘Danse exquise’. Lefort has been part of Collectif Quart Avant Poing since 2009 and has co-directed ‘5 Years After The War’ which screened at Odense International Animation Film Festival.

ÉVA KATINKA BOGNAR A freelance animator, director and illustrator as well as assistant lecturer at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design in Budapest, Éva Katinka Bognar is a prolific creator. Her short film ‘Hugo Bomfeldt’ competed at several festivals, winning the Prize of the Children’s Jury at Oberhausen International Short Film Festival.

NANCY DENNEYPHELPS A veteran of the animation festival circuit, Nancy Denney-Phelps was one of the first journalists focusing on the animation industry. Besides her journalistic work, which includes a regular blog on Animation World Network, she also curates film programs, produces music for animation and consults on animation film festivals, bringing years of experience and an unparalleled knowledge.

GRADUATION FILM COMPETITION JURY MEET THE JURY MEMBERS DAN RAMSAY You have without a doubt seen Dan Ramsay’s work. Since the turn of the millennium he has been a fixture at Aardman Animations, where he has worked as an animator on the second series of ‘Creature Comforts’ and lately ‘A Shaun the Sheep Movie: Farmageddon’. Furthermore, he has also brought his skill to Laika, working on ‘ParaNorman’ and ‘The Boxtrolls’.

JULIETTE MARCHAND Juliette Marchand is the festival programmer at Viborg Animation Film Festival. She has previously taught at Baltimore’s Maryland Institute College of Art and mentored student projects at GOBELINS in Paris. Furthermore, she has worked as director, scriptwriter and director.

SARA KOPPEL An award-winning animator who still works with pen and paper, Sara Koppel has been part of the Danish animation industry since 1984, where she got her start as a 14-year old punk. Throughout her 30+ year career she has created a number of shorts including ‘1st Day & Next Minute’, ‘Little Vulvah & Her Clitoral Awareness’ and contributed to features such as ‘Clitorissima’.

OPENING NIGHT: MARONA´S FANTASTIC TALE A DOG’S LIFE Marona, born the runt of a litter of nine, looks back on her life and the lives she passed through as the loyal dog of several owners - including a small girl and a street acrobat. Anca Damian’s film combines bittersweet pathos with an exquisite visual aesthetic, developed in collaboration with Belgian artist Brecht Evens. Marona’s colourful world becomes abstract in playfully expressionistic ways: rooms disintegrate and characters’ contours dance along their bodies. The result is an enthralling dance between vivid style and the melancholic tone of the story.

Hunden Marona, den mindste af et kuld på ni, ser tilbage på sit liv og de liv, hun passerede igennem som en række ejeres loyale kæledyr - heriblandt en lille pige og en gadeakrobat. Anca Damians ekstraordinære film kombinerer bittersød patos med en udsøgt visuel æstetik, der er udviklet i samarbejde med den belgiske kunstner Brect Evens. Maronas farverige verden bliver abstrakt på legende ekspressionistiske måder: værelser desintegrerer og karakterers konturer danser langs deres kroppe. VOID closes with a night to remember! First, we will proclaim the winners of the three awards: The Graduation Film Competition, The Audience Award and The Lejf Marcussen Award. The winning films will be screened following the announcement - but that is not all! During the ceremony we will also screen Sara Koppel’s ‘EMBRACES & the touch of skin’ - an animated poem about need for human contact - as well as provide insight into her creative process and the environment where all her ideas come to life. The evening concludes with a live animation performance by VR artist Carl Krull, whose seismographic method blurs the lines between the subject he portrays and their surrounding landscape. Take part in the festive and exuberant conclusion to VOID 2020!

‘Embrace & a touch of skin’ by Sara Koppel

VOID afslutter med en minderig aften, hvor de følgende priser uddeles: The Graduation Film Competition, The Audience Award og The Lejf Marcussen Award. Efter uddelingen vises vinderfilmene - men det er ikke alt! Vi viser også Sara Koppels ‘EMBRACES & the touch of skin’ - et animeret digt om behovet for menneskelig kontakt - og giver indsigt til hendes kreative proces samt det miljø, hvor hendes idéer vækkes til live. Aftenen afsluttes med en live animationsperformance af VR-kunstneren Carl Krull, hvis seismografiske metode opløser grænserne mellem de portrætterede subjekter og deres omgivelser. WHITE SNAKE THE CHINESE EPIC BROUGHT TO LIFE

A fantastical tale based on the Chinese legend, ‘White Snake’ tells the story of Blanca, a snake demon who, while disguised as a human, loses her memory and subsequently falls in love with a snake hunter, much to the chagrin of her sister. ‘White Snake’ plays like an epic fantasy romance, full of action and with the occasional dirty joke. Dazzlingly realized with modern CGI in a co-production between Light Chaser Animation Studios and Warner Brothers.

A quiet contemplative film, ‘The Prince’s Voyage’ explores themes of cultural clashes and exchange, generational ties and deep humanism.

Richard Linklater’s second foray into animation following ‘Waking Life’ is a drug-addled and anxiety-ridden trip. In the near-future mass surveillance is a fact of life. Keanu Reeves stars at his hazed best as an undercover cop, who slowly starts to lose the grip on his identity. Using squiggly rotoscoping, each second of the film induces the viewer with a sense of unease and paranoia. Featuring a stellar supporting cast including Woody Harrelson, Winona Ryder and Robert Downey Jr., ‘A Scanner Darkly’ is a deeply resonant and foreboding gem.

Carlo Collodi’s iconic children’s tale is brought to life in this 2012-adaptation, designed by Lorenzo Mattotti and directed by Enzo D’Alò. Mattotti’s distinctive style gives the film a tactile picture-book quality, perfectly fitting of the story of the wooden puppet, who dreams of becoming a real boy. A heartwarming and beautiful film, suitable for the whole family.

Produced, animated and scored by debuting director Zilbalodis, ‘Away’ plays quite unlike anything that has been produced in years. The film follows the silent journey of a man and his bird as they traverse a vast landscape by motorbike, pursued by a shadowy monster. It might be one of the most relaxing chase-sequences conceived, a hypnotic and poetic work of vast beauty. The film’s minimalist art style and storytelling creates a cinematic space for meditation and reflection. Zilbalodis will give a masterclass on the production of ‘Away’ on Monday February 3.

‘Away’ er en filmoplevelse ulig noget, der er produceret i mange år. Filmen følger en ung mand og hans fugls stille rejse via motorcykel gennem et storslået landskab, hvor de forfølges af et skyggemonster. Det må være en af filmhistoriens mest afslappende jagtsekvenser. Et hypnotisk og poetisk værk af stor skønhed, hvis minimalistiske look og fortællestil skaber et meditativt filmisk rum. A harrowing documentary examining the systematic use of sexual violence as part of military operations. Built on testimonials and interviews, the documentary delves into the massive scale at which atrocities are perpetrated, the extent to which they are ignored, as well as the ripple effects that they have on the victims and their community. Part of a larger transmedia project including a digital protest march, ‘Zero Impunity’ is a necessary document of our times. Co-presented with Docs & Talks.

Struktureret omkring vidnesbyrd og ekspertinterview, undersøger den rystende dokumentar ‘Zero Impunity’ systematisk brug af seksuel vold i krigsførelse. Filmen afdækker den massive størrelsesorden ugerningerne begås i, graden til hvilke de bliver ignoreret i, og den bølgeeffekt de har på ofrene og deres samfund. ‘Zero Impunity’ er et nødvendigt dokument af vores tid og en del af et større transmedia projekt, der også tæller en digital protestmarch. Designed and directed by European artists, ‘Fear(s) of the Dark’ has its roots in the proud tradition of the horror anthology. The film is a black-and-white collection of five terrifying tales of terror, all drawing on the primordial fear of the unknown monstrosities that lurk in the dark... With its distinctive look and carefully calibrated scares, it is guaranteed to send shivers down the spines of even the most hardcore genre-aficionado.

Det Italienske Kulturinstitut inviterer indenfor til et år fuld af kulturoplevelser. Instituttet arrangerer koncerter, filmaftenener, udstillinger, foredrag, teaterforestillinger og meget mere. No colours were left out in this avant-gardist acid trip that has received legendary status in animation circles due to its groundbreaking, fiercely unique style. The Hungarian cult masterpiece from 1981 has now been digitally restored in all its psychedelic glory. That the fairytale story is based on ancient Hungarian myths, in which three boys born by a white mare are sent on a heroic mission to an underworld to fight terrifying monsters, is of less importance compared to the kaleidoscopic, free-flowing visual feast on display. Last but not least, the ambient soundtrack is second to none.

In a dystopian cigarette-factory, male shoes of leather and metal rule supreme and the red high-heeled female shoes live in bondage. Killing one of her captors, a female shoe dons his black leather and ventures into the upper echelons of the factory - but the system is not easily escaped and the cycles of violence perpetuate themselves. An analogy of class and gender struggles, the used materials engage in a tactile dialogue recalling the works of Jan Švankmajer. At times ghastly and upsetting, always arresting and inventive.

A unique chance to take a trippy joyride through the golden age of Hungarian animation from the 60s to the 80s. For the last three decades of the Cold War, acclaimed Hungarian animation studio Pannónia was riding high due to the imaginative, often eccentric output of its many talented artists. This digitally remastered selection of classic short films displays a wide variety of techniques and styles. The narrative themes range from clever entertainment to fascinating avantgarde. In the 1980s, ‘The Fly’ bagged an Oscar, while ‘Wizards’ arrived as a spiritual companion to the cult hit feature ‘Son of the White Mare’, which screens on February 5. Det anerkendte ungarske animationsstudie. Her work is notable for its psychedelic mixture of warmth, humour and often slightly disturbing content, exemplified most clearly in the cult classic ‘Quasi at the Quackadero’. She has also lent to talents to multiple features and tv shows throughout her long career - including a nightmare-sequence in ‘Twilight Zone: The Movie’ and several educational segments on ‘Sesame Street’. VOID is proud to present a selection of Cruikshank’s finest work in collaboration with Women in Animation. Sally Cruikshank er tegneserietegner og en vigtig skaber af amerikansk animation. TRACEY MILLER-ZARNEKE Tracey Miller-Zarneke is an American professional whose deep fascination for animation brought her to work on successful Disney productions such as ‘Chicken Little’ and ‘The Emperor’s New Groove’. Beyond her production experience, Tracey has authored fifteen books about animation from the perspectives of art appreciation, history and education. Tracey currently serves on the board of Women in Animation as the chairperson for Legacy and Archives, and for VOID, she has curated and will present the retrospective on Sally Cruikshank.

Her work is imbued with a palpable sense of personal exploration of grief and lust, making the films intimate to an almost unbearably - and extremely beautiful - extent.
