The Research Campus on the southern end of the University of Oklahoma is a recent development that caters to the Research needs of OU and is introducing the new National Environmental Simulation Testing Facility (NEST) in the south-east corner of the site. The campus is home to a handful of research centers along with other office spaces. Though the main purpose of the South Campus is research, it lacks neighborhood involvement and is disengaged with the main campus, in conclusion it ultimately lacks synergy. Numerous parking lots may be to blame but the research center itself is programmed to require researchers, students and other user groups to use it in a very specific way or not at all. This is a group project meant to be a first look into master planning. An overall patchwork matrix of the programs was first introduced to help show the weak points of the site. The weakest points was the excessive amount of parking on the site with a lack of green space. The Patch introduced a series of berms to introduce both green spaces and a connection of the programs and buildings on site that parking lots are currently disconnecting. There was also an introduction of new programs not relevant to research to coincide with new relevant research facilities, to create a collaborative environment welcome to all. These are all located strategically on the site using a matrix of the existing programs. The Patch was then combined with other studio projects to create the South Campus Research Plan. The Reveal introduced the idea of ribbons to the site. South Ecdysis introduced a strong diagonal connecting the NEST back to main campus. S.O.U.R.C.E. introduced the importance of the Oklahoma Geological Surveys and an introduction of various land typologies onto the site. The Patch introduced a series of connections used as multi-modal paths through the site to connect programs.

Progress Check: The next step in the design process of South Campus was to each pick a location and a program. This program is a Multidisciplinary Hub or a Union centered in the middle of the master plan. It contains a central indoor courtyard to be used as a food court and a exhibition space for the reseachers on OU’s South Campus. There is a spiral of circulation with individual study spaces surrounding this main courtyard. There is a idea that the noise will be centered in the building and as you move towards the walls it quiets down into a variety of office and study spaces.

The form is made to be viewed as if emerging out of the ground while being surrounded by other topographical elements to help expand the idea of it being a force to be reckoned with. Being a multidisciplinary space it helps with the originally definted problem of the research campus having a lack of synergy. This Building will serve as South Campus’ Synergy.

ULI Hines Student Competition Located in Toronto, the proposed site is disconnected it is from the surrounding areas. Barriers in the form of train tracks and major roadways are on all sides of the property, creating an isolated triangular space. Further research into the greater Toronto area brought to light issues of flooding, due to its proximity to the Don River, and a lack of affordable housing in a progressive, multi-cultural community. This initial research led to an understanding that the Don River Bend should seek to reinforce a balance between the specific ecological and social needs of the community. The flooding has resulted in frequent closures of the Don Valley Parkway, rendering this section of roadway both unreliable and unsafe. By bringing water from the adjacent Don River into the site, flood mitigation relief is provided to the ultimate capacity that the current river can handle. After analyzing traffic patterns, traffic counts, and city circulation, the decision was made to remove the portion of the Don Valley Parkway that extends from Eastern Avenue down to the Gardiner Expressway, using arterial streets to diffuse traffic. Through the extension of Broadview Avenue, Lewis Street, and a pedestrian path to the Old Eastern Avenue Bridge, the Don River Bend makes the site accessible by all modes of transportation to surrounding areas.

Apex City is a solution to Automobile Alley in OKC by making sure the context of the site is met and existing buildings are used to their maximum potential. A new building is added to create a encompassed courtyard that although physically removed from the street is visually connected through a transparent structural design. Inside the courtyard is an apex of programs combining to support an already thriving area. The existing warehouse space is utilized as a Co-op motorcycle maintenance facility and event center roof top bar space in order to utilize the views of downtown of Oklahoma City. The rooftop bar with a secretive aspect needed a grandiose entrance in the form of a curvilinear spiraling staircase with an elevator in the center to create a feeling of sanctuary that is felt in similar “Biker Bars�. Meanwhile on the East side of the site sits an all but condemned structure with a beautiful mural facing the site. This structure forms a visual and sound barrier for the site from the railroad tracks on the other side. Utilizing this structure as a partially open pavilion by reinforcing the structure for safety creates a place for events or motorcycle parking for the adjacent Co-op.

When looking at neighborhoods like Classen-Ten-Penn in Oklahoma City with a very specific demographic of people in a very revitalized area it’s hard not to just revitalize it as well and slowly push out the current residences, but Cultivate fights this cause and effect. “Self-Reliance” with in a community is worth striving for through cultivating, engaging, producing, and inspiring within the community and that’s what Cultivation is for. The idea is to create an urban farm that supports the Classen-Ten-Penn neighborhood by leading them towards self-reliance. “You can give a man a fish and he’s fed for a day, or you can teach a man to fish and he’s fed for a lifetime” Cultivate introduces community supported agriculture through a community center that teaches gardening techniques, beekeeping, culinary education and houses market place to help the local economy as well. The upkeep is supported by Co-op housing. Co-ops prosper through cultivation because they have to cultivate their own lifestyle by living and thriving with each other with a very low cost but are required to upkeep and cultivate their provider. The design shows a cultivation of spaces interlocking vertically while also being connected through a series of staircases and catwalks.

Norman, Oklahoma has one of the best Public Transportation Systems in the state and is in a constant state of improvement, including most recently implementing a bike lane running the length of Lindsey. When first looking at the bus routes they were in large centrally located in and around the university but they don’t reach very far out into rural areas or much past Interstate 35. Also when looking at how the Riders interact with the bus stops the more used bus stops are very close to campus as well. All of the maps on this page were classified using Natural Breaks (Jenks) as a means to unify the data. The Cleveland Area Rapid Transit (CART) is in partnership with the University of Oklahoma which makes sense that its main focus is serving the University population. With all the benefits the University has there should be a greater influence of expanding outside of the more centrally located areas. If you look at the zoning map there is a lot of Residential areas not being served by Public Transportation. This project is used to show a correlation to the income demographics that the reason the CART is under-utilized is due to its inability to reach the lower income demographic of Norman.

When looking at this challenge I researched some of the more famous chairs based off of comfort and design and the main one that caught my eye is the well known Eames Chair. Then using the classic Eames shape for the bench design with a little bit of continuity in the curve this shape came out. This design is meant to be repeated into any length but also creates an illusion that it may not support the user. Then people are not merely using it for a bench but also to test and use the design out of interest and an adrenaline rush rather than necessity. This creates a bridge between form and function that allows this bench to create excitement while also being a bench used for seating and comfort. Perspective Views

The OU Student Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council recently toured the Weatherford Wind Energy Center's wind turbines and the Patience S. Latting Northwest Public Library in Oklahoma City. Most people have heard of wind turbines, but getting up close and personal with one is a somewhat startling and amazing experience! The Weatherford Wind Energy Center is owned and operated by a subsidiary of Florida Power and Lights Energy, operating 98 turbines that have the ability to generate power for more than 44,000 homes. Carolyn, our guide for the day, started off the tour by showing a video of the process of constructing the turbines from the ground up, transforming them from giant, 80-foot sections into a cohesive 262-foot tall tower. After viewing the video, the guide took the group out to see one of the turbines in action--not just at a distance--but up close and personal! The tour group also visited the Patience S. Latting Northwest Library, in north Oklahoma City, named after the former Oklahoma City mayor who was also the first female to serve on the Oklahoma City Council. The building, one of the first branch libraries constructed in over 30 years, was designed by Richard + Bauer and LWPC Architects and opened in May 2012, certified to the LEED Silver standard. The tour was led by Janeal Walker, a staff member who has been with the building since the construction process began. One of the factors contributing to the LEED Silver certification of the building was the inclusion of berms which hug the building's exterior. These allow one of their utility rooms to be FEMA-certified to withstand an F5 tornado. A geothermal heating and cooling system is used to help control the building's climate, and 80% of the materials used were recycled. Janeal made the tour incredibly interesting by providing her perspective as someone who regularly inhabits and utilizes the space. Janeal was able to give us a great overview of not just the amazing quality, but also pointed out some problematic areas of the design. Although she did have interesting flaws to point out with the space, Janeal shared lots of praise for the design and the utility it provides to the community. The library was quietly bustling during the tour, affirming this praise. USGBC-OU had a great time, and we hope more members of the University of Oklahoma community will join us on future adventures!
