Big dreams and sweet memories – 40th Anniversary Celebrations The Nikkei Concerns 40th Anniversary Gala – One Community | Transforming Lives | Celebrating 40 Years was the best ever! The Nikkei Concerns Community went all out at the Sheraton Hotel Seattle, packed with almost 1000 guests ready to have a good time for a great cause. Master of Ceremonies, actor and restaurateur Yuji Okumoto led the show with style and humor. Co-founders Tomio Moriguchi and Tosh Okamoto, President Julie Ann Oiye, and CEO Jeffrey Hattori show Tosh’s hand-carved and painted plaques with the new logo. 40th Gala cochairs take a moment in the spotlight.

Many thanks to all of our sponsors, especially our Presenting Sponsor, Ito En/Distant Lands Coffee, for making this event possible. Because of everyone’s generosity, from sponsors and event attendees to our volunteers and co-chairs, we raised over $550,000.

The bidding heated up Guests warmed up for the dinner program with an impressive silent auction, wine grab, and raffle. Four silent auction sections tempted guests with over 200 items. 50 raffle tickets for fine diamond and ruby jewelry prizes sold quickly. The Wine Grab gave all guests a fun chance to win some choice wines, or for many, very drinkable wines. Many connected with close-knit and long-lost friends, happy to spend time together. And the dramatic live auction display teased bidders who were eager to win big. Continue on page 6

In his own words Home/Community-Based Services Home/Community-Based Services launched this year with the NC Club pilot program, serving 25 seniors in the Seattle/Bellevue area. The goal was to keep seniors healthy and involved in the community while they continued to live at home. The project is now complete, and we are assessing the results. Several of the NC Club members also participate in our new Home Care service and continue to enjoy the help and companionship of the kind and helpful Certified Nursing Assistants. Below are thoughts from Gary Imanishi, whose mother, Edith, participated in the pilot program and continues her involvement in Kokoro Kai, our adult day program. Gary spoke in the video for the Raise-thepaddle segment of our 40th Anniversary Gala. With the support of a very generous audience, we raised over

Years ago, my mother expressed her desire at one time to keep her mother at home, but she could not. She was raising a family and

that commitment. If Mom can stay at home, it gives us opportunities to see her more often. I’m so grateful that there are programs like this.

Kara Mayeda, Director Home/Community-Based Services 206.588.4669 kmayeda@keironw.org

I know that funding is always an issue. If we could get support from the community, whatever it takes, I think we’re a lot better off. Society would be a lot better off. We would be in a positon to be more of a family. I think that’s important today. I think people are realizing that, that it’s very important.

A little golf, a little party, and a lot of community The 14th Annual Founders’ Golf Benefit brought out the best in golfers and dinner guests alike, generating $100,100 overall. Many thanks to our sponsors, golfers, dinner guests, bidders, donors, committee members, and volunteers. Additional thanks to the staff at Fairwood Golf & Country Club. We hope to see you at next year’s event, on Friday, August 23. The event returns to Fairwood Golf & Country Club. We have room for only 39 foursomes, and registration is open on January 1!

First there’s golf A full field of 39 foursomes (sold out early) loved the beautiful greens of Fairwood Golf &

Team Shimono enjoyed their bento lunches and some healthy frozen grapes and granola bars at one of the many snack stations on the course.

Country Club – a new course for us this year. Golfers stayed on their game with special hole activities and snacks at 17 of the 18 holes. The scramble format didn’t discourage the five flights of golfers from friendly competition. In fact, the top five foursomes in the Men’s Division scored within one point of each other.

Then there’s the party 40+ additional guests joined the players post-golf with a lively silent auction and dinner (thumbs up for the rice). M.J. Takisaki and USI Kibble & Prentice received the coveted Domo Arigato Award. The Raise-the-Paddle segment, raising over $18,000, featured the next stage of our Rehab Renovation (upgrading the rehab resident rooms), now complete. With homemade tsukemono, courtesy of Bea Kiyohara and Ellen Suzuki, a no-risk Dessert Dash with tons of luscious sweets, and a host of golf awards, the evening was a huge hit.

Carol Shinbo and Pat Iboshi unwound from a beautiful day of golf at the post-golf silent auction and dinner.

It’s a hole-in-one! One shot, from far away, at a designated hole, in a competition. Many have tried, most have been denied, but the lure of fame and fortune are ever tempting. And it is possible, because Jessica Kent aced it and won $10,000 in this year’s tournament. 20-year-old Jessica, playing on Team Kent, sank the ball on Hole 16 with a powerful drive. She experienced surprise, joy, amazement, and validation. Her sister had recently registered a hole-in-one, but this was a much bigger win. She received her prize in September, just in time for her 21st birthday. How will she spend the moolah? On an electric guitar, of course, and the rest may fund a future business project for school. Congratulations, Jessica! She is Nikkei Concerns’ second hole-in-one winner in the last five years, and Fairwood Golf & Country Club’s first tournament hole-in-one. Events

Nikkei Manor resident Rev. Timothy Nakayama and the musically inclined staff sang their hearts out to celebrate National Assisted Living Week in September. Residents, staff, and volunteers dressed up, engaged in activities, and munched on tasty goodies all week long, including an end-ofsummer barbeque.

Shoppers checked off their holiday lists and discovered unique and wonderful hand-crafted and Asian-inspired gifts and treats at the 34th annual Ayame Kai Holiday Craft Fair. Early birds waited in a long line before opening but were rewarded with a host of sweets and tangies (that’s Kokoro Kai’s Famous Takuwan) that sold out quickly.

Guests of the Rehab Renovation Celebration tested out some of the rehab technology, and the Consonus Rehab staff stretched out in the newly renovated Rehab/Restorative Gym. Many thanks to the estate of Hammerin’ Hank Taniguchi, whose generous donation funded the reno. If you would like to check out the Gym, please contact Rose Dracobly, Marketing & Admissions Director, for a tour (rdracobly@keironw.org or 206.423.1806).

Nikkei Manor resident Misao Korekiyo savored Chef Shinya Asami’s Japanese-Italian creation. Chef Asami brought the ever-popular Guest Chef Luncheon to Nikkei Manor with a delicious and innovative interpretation of the bento. The residents, plus 40 additional diners, also enjoyed his healthy and delicious lunch. Guest Chef luncheons are presented throughout the year and are open to the public, with limited seating.

The group tasted their way through popular and unique dining opportunities on the Fall Tokyo/Kyoto Gourmet & Culture Tour.

Edith Imanishi and Yukiko Iwai raised their heartrates and energy levels with light exercise in Kokoro Kai. Good companions make physical fitness much more fun.

Prost! Tomoko Hayes and Yone Terada clinked their faux beer steins and swigged a little near beer with other Seattle Keiro residents to celebrate Oktoberfest.

Toshi Janopol dropped a paper flower into the water to celebrate the Moon Festival. The Seattle Keiro Garden pond was painted with vibrantly colored flowers.

Saji Kanazawa loved the fancy balloon horse that she received for her birthday. Artist Mayumi Kluets created intricate and smile-inducing balloon masterpieces… birthday cake hats, a twisty octopus, a climbing monkey, and so much more. Balloons aren’t just for kids!

Tomiko Sakiyama delicately placed her Jenga piece on the precarious tower during game time at Kokoro Kai East. It may be great practice for eye-hand coordination, but it’s mostly fun, especially when the pieces all fall down!

Activities Assistant Jandie Ho and Seattle Keiro resident Koon Wong took center stage for Halloween. Residents dressed up in all manner of costumes, trick-o’-treated around Keiro, and cheered on the contestants for the annual Dance Party.
