As the 43rd Ryder cup came to an end, one thing became obvious. It was not the dominant performance by the United States defeating the team from Europe 199. The popularity golf has gained over the last 18 months is not going away. Part of the popularity has come from a younger generation. There were six rookies on the U.S. team. Fans are being attracted to the game of golf watching these young, rising stars similar to the generation before with Tiger Woods. There were also other factors from this year’s event which may draw new eyes to the game but may also turn off golf traditionalists. Golfers were dressed a little bit differently than years past. This year golfers competed wearing hoodies. Fans were cheering for the home team’s good shots and the opposition’s bad shots and missed putts. Both sides played into the crowd and created a fun atmosphere for everyone. There were even a few that shotgunned beers on the tee box. Like these things or not, one thing is for sure, between the unbelievable shot making and the energetic environment, interest in golf continues to be on the rise.
