mission: to safely create a positive impact on our colleagues, clients, and communities through our specialist services.

vision: enhancing spaces to enrich lives.

At Churchill, we are people driven. We are focused on creating an enhanced working environment and believe that the ability to attract and connect with our people is critical to being an employer of choice. We are proud to offer a diverse and supportive workplace, and this year we’ve taken further steps to support our communities.

We launched an employer partner profile with JobOppO, the online recruitment service built by veterans, for veterans. Founded with the acknowledgement that transitioning from military life to a “traditional” civilian job is a daunting prospect for many veterans, JobOppo partners with businesses that have made a commitment to supporting the veteran community into employment.

Churchill is the first sector sponsor to have an individual account on the app to directly communicate and share FM sector and career insights with the JobOppO community.

ERS gold award

We are thrilled to have been recognised with the gold award from the Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) for 2022. We have long helped veterans transition to working in a civilian capacity and have now introduced the buddying system, which allows any interested ex-service personnel to speak to others in Churchill that have a military background before applying for any specific roles.

Celebrating achievements

Managing director of operations for Churchill, Louisa Clarke, joined us in 2011, after starting her career as a Movements Controller in the RAF. Louisa has been instrumental in how the business attracts and supports ex-service personnel. She was the first female, operational director in Churchill’s history, and is now recognised as an industry leading figure, advocating for women in leadership, as well as supporting veterans during their transition to civilian life.

This year, Louisa won the award for Best Business Leader at the 2022 British Ex-Forces Business Awards. She was also appointed to the Government’s Veterans Advisory Board, which provides advice, insight, and diversity of thought to the government on veterans’ issues such as employment, health and wellbeing, and transition to civilian life.

expanding our social impact

This year, we have signed both the Care Leavers Covenant (CLC) and the Employers Domestic Abuse Covenant (EDAC).

The CLC is a national inclusion programme that helps care leavers aged 16-25 live independently. Designed to support those leaving care, the covenant team works with organisations to build bespoke opportunities to ensure that care leavers are supported to live independently, have access to employment, education and training and experience greater stability.

The EDAC is a pledge taken by businesses to support women affected by domestic abuse to enter, remain, or re-enter the workplace. It aims to enable organisations to identify flexible and sustainable opportunities for women to achieve long-term financial independence and economic security.

always put people first

Churchill has joined the Partnership for Refugees (Tent) network. This is the latest commitment we have made to support refugees, following our partnership with the Refugee Employment Network.

We have committed to directly hiring refugees as employees and providing training and mentorship for them. We will also support refugees throughout the UK by offering a range of activities to help them integrate into the workforce, including providing language and professional skills training where required.

always put people first

Our overarching purpose of ‘doing the right thing’ is core to our work on ESG. There is no doubt that the facilities management sector has an important role to play in helping the economy adapt to a more sustainable long-term future, and we continue to build on our extensive work over the years on corporate governance, senior manager responsibilities and culture and purpose.

interview with Hannah Dales

Group Environment Manager

Hannah Dales joined the business at the start of the summer. She came to Churchill to spearhead our environmental strategy, ensuring it is embedded in everyday working practices and it underpins decision-making throughout the business. Here she looks back at the enjoyable whirlwind that has been her first few months in the job:

I have hugely enjoyed getting to know the business, getting to meet everyone, and starting to make progress on Churchill’s environmental strategy. The best thing about Churchill is the positive, can-do attitude within the company. It’s definitely a business that tries to support and enable ideas. There are no preconceptions about the ‘right’ way to do something, so all options are open for discussion, which is very refreshing.

I’ve also enjoyed getting to know the team, visiting lots of different sites to learn how the business operates. Because Churchill’s operations are very diverse, trying to manage and co-ordinate the environmental strategy and compliance across such a wide range of different areas has been a challenge.

My previous role was focused on the environmental management of one construction site, now I oversee environmental issues for the Churchill Group across

the whole of the UK, so, as much as I would like to do everything at once, I have had to learn to prioritise. Churchill is still relatively early on in its environmental journey, so I am able to set up how we do things, which is exciting.

Creating a better understanding of Churchill’s journey to net zero has been one of my main focuses. For the first time, we have an understanding of our full scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. This provides us with the foundation on which to build a successful net zero strategy, taking us to net zero by 2040.

Over the next six months I will be working with Acclaro Advisory to map out the steps that we need to take to reach net zero and these changes will underpin our emissions reduction strategy. I’d also like to grow our environmental team and I want to keep improving our sustainability credentials. This year we received the Ecovadis Gold award for our sustainability ratings and I will ensure that we keep building on this.

important new policies

Menopause policy

We want Churchill to be a great place to work, a place where everyone feels happy and able to be the best they can be. We’ve committed to becoming a menopause-friendly employer and are working towards menopause-friendly accreditation.

Now we are on the path to introducing menopause awareness, guidance and support for all our colleagues, our aim is for everyone - not just women - to understand what the menopause is and how it can affect women at work.

Volunteering policy

We want to actively support colleagues who wish to volunteer in the communities in which they live and work; so for our full-time employees we launched our volunteering policy of a maximum of two days paid time off in each calendar year to carry out voluntary work.

Volunteering has the dual benefit of generating a feeling of pride and achievement for the individuals involved, and also demonstrates our commitment to providing our clients and the communities in which we operate with charitable support.

doing the right thing

interview with Lynzie Wills

Head of Wellbeing, Diversity & Inclusion

Lynzie Wills joined Churchill just a few months ago with a remit of driving D&I policies, such as gaining menopause-friendly accreditation and providing more support to attracting over-50s into employment here, Lynzie reflects on her first few months as our wellbeing, diversity & inclusion manager; she says the first thing that struck her about Churchill is how nice everyone is:

Starting any new job can be an anxious time, but I have been bowled over by how much everyone has made me feel a part of the team.

Learning about a new business is always exciting but one of my favourite things has been seeing how excited and passionate people are about the journey Churchill is on. Our Mosaic Champions are a perfect example of this - they are superstars! It’s been a lovely thing to watch them come together over the last few months and see their work in action as they give everyone a voice on matters relating to belonging, empowerment and career progression.

I am gradually expanding my involvement into all areas of the business and I want all the teams to know I am here to support them. There are already some amazing things happening around wellbeing and diversity at Churchill. My job now is to help align all the great work that goes on across the business, to ensure all colleagues feel connected but that we also enable our separate business areas to keep their own identities.

It’s important to me that all our colleagues understand how to boost their own wellbeing so they can flourish at work and at home. That’s why I have created Churchill’s five pillars of wellbeing, which aim to provide us all with the tools and resources to be the best we can be.

I want our leaders to feel confident in themselves and able to create a truly supportive culture. And I want all colleagues to be knowledgeable and resilient, so that everyone is empowered to make the decisions that are right for them.

doing the right thing

EcoVadis, the online measuring tool for a company’s sustainability performance, has awarded Churchill a gold medal, putting us in the top 5% of companies assessed. We were audited on the ESG performance of our global suppliers, and of sustainability issues across ‘Environment’, ‘Labour & Human Rights’, ‘Ethics’, and ‘Sustainable Procurement’.

Our commitment to net zero

Churchill has committed to achieving net zero by 2040, and to setting science based emission reduction targets in line with the latest climate science.

Near-term Science Based Target

• Churchill has committed to achieving net zero by 2040

• Net Zero is achieved by reducing all emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3) to zero

• In line with the SBTi criteria only 10% of residual emissions can be offset

Science Based Net Zero Target

• We have committed to submitting near term targes to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)

• The SBTi is the leading global standard for setting science-based emission reduction targets, and targets align with limiting global warming to 1.5’C

• Our near-term targets will cover 5-10 years and will cover all direct and indirect emissions (Scopes 1, 2 and 3)

Churchill anticipates submitting near-term targets to the SBTi for validation by June 2023

• Targets must meet specific sciencebacked criteria of the SBTi

In line with our core value to always seek better, our teams continually strive to deliver the best work. As a result of that dedication, it has been a bumper year for awards, with our work across the business being recognised for its success and the great results we’ve achieved.

Golden Service Awards

We were highly commended in the ‘Going the Extra Mile’ category at the Golden Service Awards 2022. Our entry, for our Make Ready work with the South-Central Ambulance Service (SCAS), was recognised for going above and beyond during times of adversity.

We work with SCAS on Make Ready, ensuring that its ambulance fleets are prepared, cleaned, re-stocked and all equipment is working before every shift. Designed specifically to address the challenges of the ambulance sector, our Mo:dus Make Ready app has been critical during the pandemic.

Security & Fire Excellence Awards

Amulet’s Project Blueprint situational awareness platform delivers a unique, real-time integrated understanding of operational activity, during business as usual and emergencies. It has been shortlisted under the ‘Security Software Product/Software As A Service Of The Year’ category at the Security & Fire Excellence Awards.

Amulet was also shortlisted in the ‘Security Guarding Company of the Year – over £30m turnover’ – a real testament to Amulet’s achievements as an organisation. Recognised as the fastest growing company among its peers, it has firmly established a strong position of trust and expertise among its clients across different specialisms.

Contract Catering Awards

Trudy Stroud, senior operations manager at Radish, won ‘Area Manager of the Year’ at the 2022 Contract Catering Awards. Trudy was one of three finalists in the category, which called for exceptional individuals within a catering company who have a big impact on the businesses they look after.

Trudy looked after the McCarthy Stone contract from 2018 through to 2022. During that time, she managed the contract through a retender as well as doubling its size. Trudy also secured a contract extension for a five-year term. We support 53 McCarthy Stone sites in the south of the UK, each with their own kitchens and with catering services being provided on site seven days a week.

Cleaning Excellence Awards –Covid 19 Response

Churchill was highly commended at the Cleaning Excellence Awards 2022 in the Covid-19 Response category. Our partnership with Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) was impacted by the unprecedented times that came with the pandemic, and our teams worked together to keep both the stations and the trains clean and safe for public use.

An essential part of the award entry included how the teams improved the visibility of cleaning to the public, to provide passengers and staff with reassurance that high footfall areas were being regularly sanitised and were therefore safe.

Churchill and GTR worked together to find a new, safer way of service delivery for both the staff and passengers, which saw the adoption of a digital platform to track and monitor cleaning levels in different areas. Churchill received the highly commended accolade for its work with GTR from the Cleaning Excellence Award judging panel. This recognition meant a great deal to all the teams involved with the project.

City Security article of the year

In further recognition of Mo:dus Make Ready, we were also shortlisted in the ‘Technology’ category at the IWFM Awards 2022. The IWFM Awards showcase outstanding innovations and best practice in the workplace and FM sectors so being shortlisted represented important recognition of our work in digitising FM.

Darren Read, MD at Amulet, won the Article of the Year Award for City Security magazine. His article, entitled ‘Security in 2021 and beyond’, analysed the continuing challenges and responses to the global pandemic and the impact it has had on the way we manage security. The article breaks down how the way the public view activities like socialising and shopping has changed due to the pandemic. In turn, this has impacted how we view security, and the roles and tasks security officers will have to take on as a result.

PFM Awards

As the 2021 PFM Awards happened so late in the year, we have two award wins to share. Not only did we win ‘Partners in Sustainability – Large Estates’ for our work with Network Rail High Speed at the PFM Awards in 2021, but Churchill also won the ‘Partners in Cleaning – Large Estates’ category at the PFM Awards 2022 for our work with the Scottish Police Authority (SPA).

Our work with Network Rail was recognised for the positive impact Churchill had on the environment, including the reduction of waste at St Pancras, while the SPA work was a winner due to the evidence provided on how we supported it to achieve its business, property, and FM goals through partnership, innovation, and sustainability.

Bureau Veritas

Just six months after the initial award, St Pancras International, Stratford and Ebbsfleet rail stations were all re-accredited and received Certificates of Assurance from Bureau Veritas for exceptional cleaning and hygiene standards. Since the start of the pandemic, our teams implemented the highest standards of services and is now recognised for the ongoing success of its efforts.

Bureau Veritas is a world leader in testing, inspection and certification and helps its clients improve the quality of their health and safety, environmental protection, and social responsibility practices.

Network rail case study

Churchill has been working with Network Rail High Speed to provide cleaning services to St Pancras International station since 2017.

The site is a complex mix of environments and architecture and we deploy area specialist teams to provide a high-quality, tailored provision.

St Pancras International is nicknamed ‘the destination station’. The site is a mix of intricate grade I listed 19thcentury and modern architecture. In addition to the primary station services, it houses a shopping centre and restaurant complex. Churchill provides a comprehensive cleaning service across the site.

Network Rail High Speed puts customer experience above all else. We have tailored our service to complement its own, from providing exceptional environments to introducing QR codes on our team ID badges so customers can access the information they need.

Our work is centred on three core elements: people, process, and technology. Read the full case study here:

going from strength to strength

Amulet has firmly established a position of trust and expertise among our clients. We have invested in transforming our service delivery, developing our training academy, and exclusively introducing Project Blueprint situational awareness platform to the private security market. We are committed to the progression of our officers and the industry, and our employee turnover remains at its lowest - only 1%. This is testament to our culture which promotes everyone genuinely caring and looking out for each other, and attracts high calibre talent.

In under five years, Amulet has established an impressive track record. We have established solid partnerships with clients who stay with Amulet because of our specialist expertise, service excellence and innovative people, technology and intelligence offering. These qualities also mean we continue to attract significant new business too.

The business continued on a sustainable growth trajectory, achieving impressive figures for the fifth consecutive year. FY22 saw our top line growth increase 25%, taking our turnover above £50m. Although we have firmly secured our place among the top 5% of UK private security providers from the very beginning, this year we achieved our highest score yet - 142 out of the maximum 145.

It is a cornerstone in Amulet’s mission to deliver safety to spaces and the people who use them, across the UK. We’re committed to making the UK a safer place to live and our clients have full confidence in us/our expertise to help them get there.

business highlights

In September 2021, we exclusively launched a completely innovative and intuitive application. Unrivalled in the UK market, the ‘control room in your pocket’ is a simple-to-operate platform that uses technology to enable evidence-based decision-making by managers at all levels, whether on site or working remotely, during business as usual and emergencies. Project Blueprint links visual information to time and space, providing an accurate representation of operational activity and the operating environment, delivered by a tablet-based application.

The Project Blueprint platform is already utilised extensively across all emergency services with over 100,000 deployments using the platform in a 12-month period. It is the only way private sector organisations can share real time information with the emergency services, enabling skilled professionals to deliver an integrated approach to critical situations.

With the imminent introduction of the “Protect Duty” legislation, Project Blueprint uniquely enables Amulet to offer private sector organisations improved preparedness, reduced costs, and increased safety. There are numerous benefits to improved real-time awareness, including creating better lines of communication between situational command and management teams, enabling companies to make informed decisions, and creating a culture of preparedness.

new services

Chequers launched a comprehensive new winter maintenance service including proactive gritting and snow clearance. Triggered by Met Office forecasts, specialist teams treat each site with the correct amount of salt, depending on the conditions. Additional gritting or snow clearance can be requested via the Chequers control room and the team will be on-site within two hours. As seasonal requirements such as emergency maintenance work ramp up, installing a Christmas tree in the workplace can often fall to the bottom of the to-do list. Chequers Christmas tree service is now also available, offering real and artificial trees at a range of heights, as well as various lighting and decoration options.

One Housing’s operations include Arlington, where Chequers runs training programmes. Crisis is a national charity supporting the homeless. Members, like Ivan Lucci, are offered help to find housing and gain new skills.

Ivan attended the Chequers training centre at Arlington. He passed his course, was later interviewed, and finally offered a cleaning role at the Stratford Centre.

He said: ”I was desperate and the teams at Crisis, Chequers and Churchill all pulled together to help me, and it has made a very big difference to my life.”

continued growth

Churchill Cleaning won the Eurostar contract, being selected to deliver train presentation services, depot cleaning, office cleaning and the running of a minibus service for visitors and employees to Eurostar’s Temple Mills depot. The five-year contract with the premium brand in rail travel, worth in excess of £20 million, started in 2021 following a very technical implementation carried out over a six-week period. It is a high-profile contract that complements our rail industry experience and partnerships with Arriva, GTR, East Midlands Railway, Grand Central, Nexus and Siemens.

Churchill was also named as a supplier on the Crown Commercial Service’s (CCS) RM6232 Facilities Management and Workplace Services Framework. The CCS frameworks comprise of common public sector requirements and a list of suppliers who have been evaluated as capable of delivering the requirements. As a named supplier, we will now be able to help all UK public sector bodies, including local authorities, blue light services, healthcare, education, and devolved administrations, achieve commercial benefits while investing in sustainable and technology-led FM services.

Our contract with the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman has not only been renewed for the Manchester premises, but also extended to its London office as well. Churchill began its partnership with the PHSO in 2018 at its head office in Manchester, and this has been renewed for another four years while in London we have been awarded a two-year contract with the option to extend for another two years.

Portfolio, our high-end cleaning and hygiene business, has won a three-year contract with law firm Penningtons Manches Cooper. The contract includes cleaning and hygiene services, feminine washroom services, window cleaning and consumables. The firm’s brief called for a service partner that embodies care of its employees, as well as one that could support its ESG strategy. Portfolio was awarded the contract thanks to its track record of excellent service delivery, sustainability credentials and technology solutions.

National Accounts overview...

At Churchill, we have been delving deeper into the traditional approach that facilities management businesses take to delivering soft services to national clients. This traditional model has worked well in the past, however today’s demands for better information, consistency of culture, service and efficient communication have exposed the traditional model’s limitations and for us it is no longer fit for purpose. Generally, facilities management businesses are structured regionally - a team of account managers sit within a regional operation director’s structure. These account managers will look after several properties for various clients within their patch.

These regional teams will have their own administration teams who are in turn, part of a centralised support team such as HR & Finance. However, as your national properties are allotted across the regional model, they will be split across these multiple regions, and an FM business usually has a minimum of eight regions to cover the UK. Eight regions, all with their own account managers, middle managers, administrative teams, and operation directors. The number of people now involved in the service delivery to your properties is huge. No wonder that those different properties see a different level of service and culture, communication becomes ineffective and decision making cumbersome.

So, what is our solution? Over the last 18 months we have developed and tested a fresh approach for the facilities management industry designed to achieve the best outcomes for you. We focus on the structure that suits your organisation structure rather than fitting you in to ours. This model means the account managers focus on what they do best at your properties whilst a specialised and dedicated national account team handles the rest.

A relationship director from the national account team will integrate themselves in your business and estate strategies. This person has the gravitas and authority to have the final say on anything that our teams do on your properties and are always your true, single point of contact. We can say with confidence that Churchill will be the easiest facilities management business you have ever worked with.

growth in the city of Manchester

Our new office, in the city centre, is bringing further support to new and existing contracts in the North West region. The office, which is located at the Bruntwood development Neo, will be a hub for both the operations and business development teams. It is a key part of our future growth as Manchester remains one of Europe’s fastest growing cities.

The move in to the city centre also sees the expansion of our Portfolio business to professional workplaces, which raises the bar around people, process and technology to landmark buildings in and around the city.

City centre contracts include Arup, built environment consultants, at Piccadilly Place; tech company, Arm; and the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. We also provide cleaning services at two popular city centre attractions, the Science and Industry Museum and the National Football Museum.
