Summer 2014

NIFCO IS DRIVING FORWARD Welcome to the first edition of InFocus.

A magazine all about Nifco UK

Message from Mike

Challenges we are facing We have some great plans which should see us increasing our sales to about £100m from £60m this year and subsequently doubling our numbers employed to nearly 1000 by 2020 and strong possibilities of further factory expansion. I recently attended the BIS Manufacturing Summit in Birkenhead that was attended by Nick Clegg (Deputy Prime Minister), Vince Cable (Business Secretary) and Martin Donnelly (Permanent secretary for the department of Business, Innovation and Skills). A great event, with some great messages about the industry’s challenges and opportunities. I am pleased to say Nifco has ticks in all of the boxes for strategies to deal with the challenges raised. The event was also great opportunity for networking - new business opportunities for Nifco were identified by such networking. The second event was Meet the Buyer event which was held in London’s Excel Centre and attended by NUK’s Account Manager Paul Radford and Marketing Manager Michelle Blackett. The organisers, The Automotive Investment Organisation, had assembled all of the UK’s leading automotive companies and provided the opportunity for them to be linked with potential suppliers such as

2

Nifco, again we have a strategy in place to do this but many companies don’t. The key note speaker was Michael Fallon and again Nifco and the North East got a great mention. Fantastic PR for Nifco and the North East which lead to, for a nice change, our customers seeking us out. At the event Nifco got to meet current and potential customers and a great opportunity for further networking.

MBE nomination I wish to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support at Nifco UK. It is a pleasure to have recently been nominated for an MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list. It really is an incredible honour to be recognised in this way and unbelievable to think that a boy who grew up on a council estate in Darlington will be going to Buckingham Palace to collect an MBE.

Our biggest challenge So, the future is looking quite optimistic in terms of sales and business growth but as always these sales will only be as good as the efficiency levels we achieve in implementing and converting our business opportunities into sales £s. This will take an ongoing collaborative effort from all in NUK and our suppliers to achieve just this.

New buildings and new equipment are relatively straight forward. Our biggest challenge is the development of our staff. We are working with Teesside University, Stockton Riverside College, Middlesbrough College, Darlington College and many other training providers to develop a strategy to address current and future skills requirements. There are going to be many career development opportunities in the business moving forward which will take commitment from staff and the company to reach the right skill levels both academically and in respect of unique vocational and business skills. Like the many staff that have already developed themselves in Nifco over the last 10 years or so and some continuing to do so it will require a level of personal sacrifice, usually in personal time, and personal initiative to achieve our required goals. We would much rather train and develop existing staff than take on external candidates wherever we can so please don’t miss out on these opportunities and engage with the company both directly and demonstratively.

Focus on Operations

Factory 2 Move

The next major launch is X760 (Jaguar XE) in December 2014, Nifco UK secured business for 50 tools and some fairly complex components as a Tier 2 supplying Lear Corporation seating.

Factory Move We have recently completed a very successful project to get production up and running in our brand new factory. During this time we moved 10 moulding machines and installed 5 new moulding machines, stock built, 462939 components gaining approval from 24 plants around the globe. Feedback from our customers has been very positive. We couldn’t have done this without the hard work of the Nifco team, everybody in plant has supported in the smooth transition and implementation. We are working on a new layout for factory 1 in the Moulding and Assembly areas this is to improve operations and create a better product flow from moulding through to control of WIP.

Efficiency Success Thanks to the ongoing efforts of the Operations team we are now meeting our target of 85% machine utilisation across the two plants.

25T Boy Injection Moulding Machines We have gained approval for two 25T boy injection moulding machines, this is part of a strategy to bring more fastener business to the UK.

Quality Improvement Quality, On time Delivery and Cost are the three main expectations from our customers, if we continue to deliver these, we will continue to be successful in winning business enabling business growth. We do however, need to continuously improve at the moment we are seeing too many customer concerns because of quality problems. Concerns affect the business and our relationship with our customer and can be detrimental to winning new business. We need to work as a team with cell leaders, quality engineers and management to reduce the quantity of concerns received.

Major Product Launches Well done to everyone involved in the P32S (Qashqai) launch between December 2013 and January 2014. We successfully launched 49 tools for both Nissan and Lear.

Make Our Company Safer

Nifco UK Safety Performance

“Fantastic”, a word that doesn’t even come close to describing the achievement of reaching 3 million safe working hours. This equates to 2134 days without an incident that has to be reported to the government’s Health and Safety Executive (HSE). Our last incident was in August 2008. Everyone has played their part in reaching this high level of Health & Safety performance and should be very proud. With the continued efforts of all Nifco UK members we can ensure that we all remain safe at work. As the HSE policy states “Everyone has the right to come to work and go home safe” The 3 million safe working hours helped us to achieve the British Safety Council’s highest accreditation – The Sword of Honour. In order to compete for the Sword of Honour, we had to achieve the maximum five stars in the British Safety Council’s health and safety management audit scheme, as well as demonstrate expert health and safety management and best practice from the shop floor to the boardroom. Well done to everyone!

Next TS Audit.

The next TS16949 audit will take place on 20th, 21st & 22nd October. Certification to this standard is a mandatory requirement by some of our customers. BSI auditors will be assessing our Quality Management System for compliance against the standard and our own internal procedures. There will be two auditors here for 3 days.

Safety Strategy and Belief

The Safety Bubble initiative being launched aims to create a culture of safety belief that will encourage everyone to ensure they and their colleagues remain safe throughout the company by the identification and elimination of issues. This programme is being launched in Factory 2 first under the vision ‘Make Our Company Safer’. Factory 1 roll-out is due to start in September 14.

Factory Improvements

Ventilation Solutions As we know Factory 1 ventilation system needs enhancing to improve the working condition of the manufacturing area. Currently we have received proposals for a new Factory 1 ventilation system that are estimated at ÂŁ0.5m this is around twice the cost of the system we have just installed in our new factory 2. While we realise the issue is very important, this is a significant cost and this is being reviewed. The proposals centre around a similar system to our new Factory 2, however Factory 1 manufacturing area is twice that of factory 2 so for a similar design the cost will be higher. Comparisons with other Nifco factories are underway and the scope of the phase 3 Nifco Poland phase 3 new factory ventilation system was reviewed last week and design drawings will be received this week for review in parallel with a review of the Nifco Spain system.

12

We are committed to resolve this issue and we will install a ventilation system that will remove the stale warm air that is being generated by the moulding process and replace it with fresh air from outside as soon as it can be arranged. We have temporary measures in place to attempt to alleviate the problem however we appreciate these measures aren’t as adequate in the hotter parts of the day as they could be. This of course is no permanent substitute for a specifically designed final and permanent solution. We are investigating additional temporary short-term measures to provide some cool air within the problem areas much more than circulating fans. These are industrial scale air conditioning units as shown in the picture below. We will keep you informed of further developments. Until then, thank you for your patience.

Securing our Site We are planning on implementing a new system to control access to the Nifco UK site. Security barriers will be put in place with number plate recognition to allow access to the site. We are hopeful this will improve security on site and eliminate the recent theft issues we have seen. The main gate as viewed from inside the plant and the area within which the new security system will be installed.

A flexible system to cope with colleague shift times, deliveries, visitors as well as different vehicle types and continental vehicles is required. Initial capital outlay and running costs have been considered and so a demanding scope of work was developed by working with local security system suppliers. The installation company is currently under consideration as we analyse quotations received. The installation is expected to be completed within the next three months.

The new barriers are intended to have upper and lower skirts to deter all potential intruders

Pack a Picnic We are working at enhancing the pond area in front of Factory 1 and including a colleague picnic area. The ponds either side of the main gate are required to regulate the water discharge from Factory 1. The earth mounds around the North pond adjacent our neighbourhood garage, has been marked for development at the request of the NIFCO UK directors to enhance this area for the benefit of our colleagues. The development is proposed to include a seated area and extension to the ‘Trim Trail and development of habitat including plant and pond life, where possible. The intention is to create a legacy eco system to enhance our working and ecological environment. Currently we have enlisted the help of ‘Naturally Wild’ an Ecological consultancy and a Landscape architect from ‘Landcare’ who have a proven track record in industrial / eco system development programmes. The project is also designed to lower the overall height of the earth mound to give greater visibility of the factory. It is intended that this project will be completed within this year.

Factory improvements Stock Accuracy Improvement Project Our Vision at Nifco UK is to be The Number One Manufacturing Company in Europe Specialising in Functional Plastic Components. In order to achieve this goal we have to achieve the internationally recognised standard of 95% stock accuracy. Nifco UK is currently sitting at an average 46% stock accuracy across the business. In order to bridge the 49% + stock accuracy gap we are pleased to be launching a Stock Accuracy Improvement Project. This is one of the largest projects since the move from Nifco Yarm Road to Durham Lane. Nifco is expected to be a £100million business by 2020 and stock accuracy is crucial in achieving our vision. The project will last 18 months and will require system changes, in the near future we will see changes in product labels, storage methods, inventory reductions, works orders, planning, monitoring and control. The project will be lead by John Morgan (Operations Manager) with the support of John Legg (Logistics Specialist) and a cross functional team as shown below. Nifco UK’s success is due to our talented, highly skilled and passionate workforce. Stock Accuracy is everyone’s responsibility; your engagement with this project is hugely appreciated.

Mike Matthews to address Durham Oktoberfest

Durham Oktoberfest is an engineering and manufacturing exhibition organised by the Engineering Forums in County Durham and other regional stakeholders to promote engineering and manufacturing in the region and beyond. Mike Matthews was asked last month to be the key note speaker at this event and will be discussing the challenges Nifco UK has faced over the past 10 years from the economic decline to the growth the business is currently seeing. Mike stated “I am delighted to be invited to be keynote speaker at this year’s Durham Oktoberfest. The event is all about promoting the regions strengths within the fields of engineering and manufacturing and part of that process is to give our firms the chance to hear from people like myself, who have experienced first hand the highs and lows of running a business” Oktoberfest, organised by the North, East and South Durham Engineering Forums in partnership with NEPIC, the Advanced Manufacturing Forum, NOF Energy, Business Durham and the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS), takes place on October 23, at the Xcel Centre in Newton Aycliffe.

Optimism about future of Manufacturing in the UK

Building Britain Business Innovation and Skills Automotive Manufacturing Summit 2014. Members of the Nifco team attended a Manufacturing Summit on the 19th June which hosted business leaders and government ministers in reviewing UK manufacturing. The Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg spoke about British manufacturing and regional growth at the BIS Manufacturing Summit, part of the International Festival of Business in Liverpool. In his address he spoke about the optimistic future of the UK Manufacturing industry and our growing economy. Nick Clegg stated Britain now had the most productive car sector in Europe with a new vehicle rolling off the production line every 20 seconds. By 2017, the UK industry is expected to be producing 2 millions vehicles a year. This is great news for Nifco UK, our business will continue to grow in line with the UK economy and positive outlook for vehicle manufacturing in the UK. Vince Cable also addressed the audience on strategies being implemented to boost growth and support the manufacturing sectors longer term. The skills gap challenge in industry was highlighted, in particular, women in engineering. Nifco UK has strategies in place to deal with these challenges, more information can be found on page 22.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders are supporting Nifco UK We were absolutely delighted when Nifco UK was mentioned by RT Hon Michael Fallon MP (Minister of state for Business and Enterprise and Member of State for Energy) in his Key Note speech at the SMMT Meet the Buyer Event, London Excel Centre (June 2014), in front of 420 delegates including key purchasing members from the major OEM’s.

Nifco UK, a company based in Stockton on Tees, is part of the global Nifco group that develops and manufactures functional plastic components for the Automotive industry. The RGF allocated them £3.57 million in 2 separate rounds that will see them create 295 jobs in total and 17 apprenticeships. The funding helped Nifco UK to persuade their Japan parent Nifco Inc to increase investment. As a result, they have built 2 advanced factories, and established a research and development centre in the UK. This is great news for the UK and will ensure that there is increased demand on the supply chain, therefore allowing for the supply chain to grow and develop. An address was also later given by Joe Greenwell, CEO for the Automotive Investment Organisation UK Trade and Investment in which he showed Nifco’s new facility. The image was taken by Lawrence Davies Deputy CEO for the Automotive Investment Organisation on his recent visit to Nifco – the feedback he gave us is that he is thrilled with the success and development of our company including our fantastic new facilities.

Michael Fallon Said

It is great to see that Nifco UK is gaining national recognition and has a great story. With the hard work of our team we can continue to be recognised as a top company in the UK supporting us in our new business ventures, grant applications, attracting staff and continuing to be an award winning company.

Vision

2020 Vision Skills development In line with Nifco UK’s phenomenal success and growth, the business has recognised that by 2020 we will have a major skills gap. Nifco UK is currently a £50 million business with strategic plans to become a £100 million plus business by 2020 – 6 years time. We can’t grow the business without the support of all of our staff and continue to appreciate the efforts from all teams. We are working in collaboration with Teesside University to introduce skills training for colleagues in all areas of the business to further develop our staff and in turn support in developing our business.

In order to do this, we have to implement a plan to close this gap. After discussion regarding the most efficient way for Teesside University and Nifco to work together and under the terms and spirit of the joint Memorandum of Understanding, Teesside University has appointed a Key Account Manager to be the main window for Nifco.

Heading up the Skills Development Strategy from Teesside University is Elaine Hooker with Frances Hoy (HR manager), Andy Dunn (Engineer manager) and John Morgan (Operations manager) working with Elaine to up skill our business.

This is just another great example of how universities and businesses are adapting to work together and address the skills gaps in business and industry.

With the support of Teesside University and our skills development heads we hope to further engage and develop the Nifco workforce and continue to be a successful business in the North East and UK.

Women are steering their careers into Manufacturing Nifco UK is committed to developing women in our industry. To date, we have had more than 50 female colleagues who have completed a VRQ Level 3 Career Advancement and Progression programme designed to support females in realising their full potential in male dominated industries. Nifco UK was recently featured in a press release as part of the National Women in Engineering Day 2014.

Anna Donaldson has been working with Nifco since November 2013 and is one of 17 apprentices currently in the business. Anna is our first Production Engineering apprentice working with Richard Clement’s Production Engineering team, she is also undertaking a BTEC in Mechanical Engineering at Middlesbrough College. We are also pleased to welcome Ashley Tonner to our Engineering Department, Ashley graduated from Leicester University in 2012 with a degree in Aerospace Engineering, Ashleigh has spent 2 years on a Graduate Programme working for Darchem Engineering as a Manufacturing Engineer. Ashley will predominately be responsible for the introduction of new Ford powertrain projects. Mike Matthew’s stated “Along with Anna and Ashley, it is a joy to see people across our site developing their skills and in particular to see more women establishing themselves in a sector that in the past – was predominately male.”

Funding to support our vision

Military Services

Employee Ownership Fund We are in the process of applying for a Government grant called EOF (employer ownership fund).Money is available to assist automotive suppliers to improve their operations and improve skills to sustain the growth in our industry.

Glen Fenby, HR Advisor recently attended a meeting at the North East Chamber of Commerce about bringing ex-military personnel into industry. On average 24,000 service men and women leave the Armed Forces each year, personnel with 18-25 years service in the forces have extensive experience and skills that can be transferable into business.

We have registered interest in the scheme and are currently reviewing suppliers to deliver the training. The main theme of the training will be TPM (Total Productive Maintenance) based activities underpinned by 5S. 5S is a Japanese organisation method and stands for Sort, Straighten, Shine, Standardise and Sustain. The aim for Nifco will be to improve our manufacturing form very good to world class.

July 2014

Glen was a great representative for Nifco at this event having served 22 years in the forces. Glen is highly motivated and enthusiastic in his role in HR and a great example of the calibre of personnel our company will look to introduce in the future. Nifco is behind this campaign led by Sir Nick Parker KCB CBE who was former commander-in-chief, Land Forces for the British Army.
