The 7 Celestial bodies as seen above (Sun, Moon, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars) are first used as navigation tools for the first time and are used to track the passage of time

6,000 BC

The Sumerian’s in Mesopotamia are the first to record movement of the stars and planets on clay tablets like the one above

700 BC

The Babylonian’s are the first to divide the sky into twelve sections which leads to the creation of the Zodiac Wheel which looked like the one above

409 BC

The Babylonians created the very first horoscope chart based on a persons time and date of birth. The above chart is an example of a simple natal chart.

5th Century AD 331 BC

The Greeks were the first to assign names to the twelve Zodiac signs, and all of the names came from Greek literature. We still use those same twelve names as seen above today

Western Astrology, which is based around the Zodiac as seen above, disappears for around 500 years after the Roman Empire collapses. Astrology is still practiced by Arabs, but is an underground practice.

1603 1650-1780

The numerical twelve house system that we use in modern astrology practices with the twelve signs is created for the first time. Astrology declines during this time due to the church inquisition and it is labeled a heresy.

The age of enlightenment causes astrology to be viewed as entertainment rather than a scientific method. Artists use astrology as a focus in their work as seen above.

A

strology was once a practice that was so complex that only highly trained individuals could practice it. From plotting the precise movements of the stars to developing intricate house systems, to interpreting complex birth charts, Astrology had always been a complex and difficult practice - until modern technology changed that. Today, anyone can find their complete birth chart and get simplified explanations of each aspect of their chart within seconds online. What was once an exclusive community of a few highly trained individuals has

turned into a community where anyone and everyone can learn and practice. With just a little bit of research, anyone can become an amateur astrologer and interpret their own birth charts and horoscopes.

The rise of social media has created a new interest in astrology, as people can easily share their charts, horoscopes, and experiences with a huge audience while having a treasure trove of information at their fingertips. This once closed community has opened its doors and turned into a trendy practice that has worked its way into people’s everyday lives.

In the past if one wanted to find their astrological birth chart and find their “big three” signs, they would need to find a reputable astrologer, and the astrologer would have to plot their chart by hand. The whole process could take days and the chart would be very complex and difficult to interpret to an untrained eye. Today if one wanted to find their birth chart they could simply type their birth information into google and hundreds of websites would have complete and simplified charts within seconds. If you want to learn more or are confused, there are countless websites that have answers and explanations for every learning level. For those who prefer physical copies of their charts or prefer to learn through reading physical books, there is a whole world of options. If you enter any bookstore there are hundreds of books, magazines, and brochures about astrology ranging from beginner to advanced practices, and even board books about the signs for young children.

Astrology is a topic that interests a wide variety of people of all ages and backgrounds, as it has roots in many cultures.

With such a wide array of literature available about astrology, more and more people are taking the steps to educate themselves and dig deeper into how astrology impacts their lives. “I’ve always been interested in Astrology but it’s a lot to learn at once, so using guidebooks and beginners books was a really helpful way to ease into the practice and dig deeper than just reading my horoscope” said Olivia Auseth, a UNI sophomore.

The “New Age” of astrology goes much further than just online and print accessibility, as the rise of social media has transformed how astrology is incorporated into our daily lives and routines. Astrology apps are more popular than ever, and their features range from simple daily horoscope notifications to fully AI powered star movement maps and precise predictions. One of the top Astrology apps available is Co-Star, which is AI powered and offers hyper specific daily horoscopes, recommendations, explanations, and even meditations based on your birth chart.

Like books, there are many astrology apps for everyone from beginners to experts. With the use of astrology apps, checking horoscopes have become a daily ritual for many users, and information about how the stars and planets are impacting you is all right on your phone. “Co-Star is one of my favorite apps because it’s so personalized and the insights are really helpful to see what you may need to do or change in order to have a good day” said UNI Senior Allison Bentzen.

Besides astrology specific apps, many social media platforms have jumped onto the astrology bandwagon. Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, and offers astrologers a huge audience. Many astrologers on Instagram will use their platforms to educate people and explain specifics rather than do specific chart readings or interpretations of events. While many professional astrologers use instagram to educate, there are also astrology and horoscope accounts that are simply for fun and entertainment. One of the largest entertainment accounts is

@glossy.zodiac with 4.8 million followers. These types of accounts post funny and relatable photos and memes depicting the traits and thoughts that are typical of the 12 zodiac signs. These accounts are great for casual astrology practitioners as they combine pop culture with traditional astrology concepts in an easy to understand way.

Another popular social media app that has taken astrology to a new level is Snapchat. In a recent update, Snapchat rolled out their astrology feature on users profiles. Users can input their birth time, date and location and Snapchat will give them their simplified birth chart complete with explanations in a slideshow style. Users’ avatars, or “bitmoji’s” are incorporated and help explain the importance of each element.

Snapchat includes the “big three” which are the sun. moon, and rising or ascendant signs, along with each planet and sign that goes with them. You can share your astrological chart with your snapchat friends or on your story so you can learn more about your friends and their charts.

Alongside Instagram and Snapchat, another company that has jumped onto the astrology and social networking bandwagon is Spotify. Spotify is one of the top music streaming platforms in the world, and they are known for their personalized music experience. Spotify offers highly curated playlists and suggestion lists for each user covering anything from new artists, to missed hits, to one of their newest offerings- zodiac inspired playlists.

Spotify has a large team of data analysts that have done extensive research for these curated playlists that includes a mix of music and podcasts specified towards the traits of each zodiac sign. For example, Leo’s are notoriously loud and energetic so their music will be more upbeat and in you face as

opposed to flirty Libra’s who will have more love songs in their playlists.

During astrological events such as a retrograde the playlists will change the vibe based on what signs are being affected. The podcast portion includes podcasts from top celebrity astrologers, news podcasts, and motivational podcasts all based on how that sign is likely to be feeling based on the planetary movements. “Spotify’s zodiac playlists are such a unique element and are always scarily accurate for my mood on any given day. It’s really a cool idea that no other streaming service even comes close to matching” said UNI junior Erin Hassenstab.

Another company that has begun to utilize astrology to better understand and serve its users is the dating app, Bumble. On Bumble, users can create their dating profiles and include highly specific information such as if they want kids, religious preference, political party, and now zodiac signs along with many more options. Along with curating their own profiles, users can also set filters so that only people with specific requirements will be shown as options to chat with. There is a lot of information available about which zodiac signs are more compatible with others and this can be a very crucial piece of information when meeting someone new. For example, fiery Aries is a great match with cool and calm Aquarius, as they balance each other’s persoanlities.

“What’s your sign” is asked so frequently during conversations on the app, that the creators added the astrology feature so you can select which signs you are matched with for optimal chances of a good relationship. Besides just offering date matching, Bumble also has lots of great articles available to users about all sorts of topics, but they also have an astrologer on their writing staff who explains the compatibility factor of the zodiac signs to users. By adding this unique feature, astrology can now play an even bigger role in people’s everyday lives. “It’s been kind of fun to play around with the zodiac sign settings, and looking back at my conversations you really can tell a pattern of which signs I’m more compatible with. It sounds crazy but it really does help find better connections” said UNI Junior Jennifer Paxson.

From its beginnings as a closed practice focused on stone tablets and expansive charts that only a select few could interpret, astrology has evolved into an open practice that anyone of any interest level can practice and understand. Astrology plays a role in everyone’s lives, whether we realize it or not, but today it is much easier to incorporate it into our

daily routines. In today’s new age of astrology, the practice works its way into our routines by waking up to a notification about your horoscope, listening to your zodiac playlist in the car on the way to work, and swiping and matching with someone who is a compatible sign on a dating app in your free time. Astrology is an ancient and fascinating practice that has gotten a 21st century reboot and has become one of the most followed and influential trends of the time.
