S Physics AS & A2 Level
EXAM BOARD: AQA
SCIENCE FACULTY
Course Content Physics is the study of how our universe works, its rules and mechanics, and the scientific techniques which lie behind great discoveries. AS Level
Unit 1 Particles, Quantum Phenomena and Electricity Students will investigate the search for the building blocks of our universe, be introduced to experiments which can only be described using quantum physics, and develop their understanding of electrical circuits.
Unit 2
Unit 3
Unit 5
Investigative and Practical Skills
Nuclear Physics, Thermal Physics and an Optional Topic
This assessed task will test students’ ability to apply their skills to unfamiliar practical situation related to Units 1 and 2, and carry out an analysis of their results. A2 Level
Unit 4 Fields and Further Mechanics The nature of gravitational, electric and magnetic fields is investigated and compared, as well as studying in greater depth the key mechanical concepts of ideas such as momentum and simple harmonic motion.
Mechanics, Materials and Waves Application of Newtons Laws of Motion in a variety of contexts is required in this unit, as well as investigating how materials store energy as their shape is changed, and how energy propagates as waves.
The forces holding atoms together is considered, as well as the study of the possible decay processes of unstable nuclei. Students also discover the basics of thermodynamics. Students may be offered the opportunity to undertake more independent study on one of the 4 optional topics: Astrophysics, Medical Physics, Turning Points in Physics or Applied Physics.
Unit 6 Investigative and Practical Skills This assessed task will test students’ ability to apply their skills to unfamiliar practical situation related to Units 4 and 5, and carry out an analysis of their results.
