This map of Gainseville shows how far the local schools and supermarket’s are. Chicopee Mill is isolated from both schools and access to fresh food.

The spaces in Chicopee with the potential to house urban agricultural opportunities are those which are dormant, or are part of the school. Those which are owned by the church could be used if there is an agreement made between the church and the community.

Opportunities for Urban Agriculture

Chicopee Mill Complex is a town previously designed to be fully walkable to areas of leisure, worship, and food. Now, the mill’s walkability has drastically reduced, and residents have little access to fresh food. With Chicopee’s special position as a historic town, they have the ability to use their land however the community sees fit. By developing a plan to educate and create a platform for sustainable food production, the town of Chicopee can have a better understanding of the ways they can produce food for their town, as well as learn how to engage in a healthier lifestyle. In the first phase I propose adding a community park which can also serve as a place to educate students and community members about urban agriculture. There will be plots which the community can rent out to grow vegetables, and these will be next to meadows of pollinator plants. The park will serve both the nearby school as a track, as well as a place for children to play.

As Earth’s climate begins to change, we need to develop sustainable farming practices with vulnerable populations in mind, and incorporate multiple disciplines such as STEM, horticulture, crop science and social work. This 26 acre site situated between downtown Athens and the North Oconee River serves to bring Athens’ most creative minds together to help communities adapt to global climate change. It features trial gardens and greenhouses for crop research, a community center and museum to engage the surrounding community and provide education about the importance of diverse plant communities, and office space to connect local businesses to the University of Georgia.

Infill Housing- 651 Ogelthorpe Ave.

Site Analysis

Overgrown with tall grasses and filled with old, decaying trees, 651 Ogelthorpe Ave is a 3.8 acre vacant lot located in an Athens’ residential neighborhood. This lowimpact design strives to create affordable apartments connected by pedestrian and bike friendly paths. It also provides easy access to community services, transportation routes and a popular nearby park.

Clover Fields Farm 6400 Sulphur Well Rd is a 200 acre former tobacco and alfalfa farm located in Lexington, Kentucky. It features rolling hills, two ponds, pockets of forested land, and beautiful vistas. It is also conveniently located 30 minutes outside of the heart of Lexington. There are currently two tobacco barns on site that are in poor condition and will be demolished and a doublewide trailer will be moved off site. This design proposal is to transform the existing farmland into a high-end private equestrian facility and horse farm. Field crops will no longer be grown on site, and some of the formerly cultivated areas will become quality horse pasture. Clover Field Farm would feature a English riding event venue and a winery with cabins for those who wish to stay the weekend at the farm.

Brunswick Plaza

Located on the coast in Brunswick, Georgia, Mary Ross Park provides locals with an attractive view overlooking the East River. The proposed redesign will turn the park into a plaza. It serves to create a safe, engaging space to celebrate the importance of Brunswick’s waterfront and allow the community to interact with the element of water in a creative way. The park has two runnels which break up the plaza and delineate areas for play, rest, events, shopping and eating. One axis of the runnel directs the visitor’s line of sight to the boardwalk and East River, encouraging them to stop and appreciate the movement of water.

I enjoy drawing in ways that are not always restrcited to architecture and planning. This collection of pastel drawings were an experiment of using a limited color pallet to create dynamic compositions.
