Introduction LINE DANCES Dancing is very energizing. As you move around, responding to whichever kind of music, lines of movement across the floor are created, which if charted, may very well look like one of my new LINE DANCE paintings, the energy value of each separate movement recorded in a different colour. Dancing is also celebratory. Nothing beats dancing for giving one a feeling of being physically part of the excitement of some festivity. To be able to dance with gay abandon is to approach a liberation of all the senses. We should all dance much more…may I suggest the paso doble! WEST COAST VIEWS If the nature of dancing is lively and energizing, then being next to the ocean is calming and restorative. Apparently the invigorating salt air has got to do with negative ions or something I can’t seem to remember for the moment. Looking at the ocean is contemplative. One’s own mood responds to the changeable mood swings of the sea. It’s all very elemental and powerful; a sort of existential balm. Where dancing almost automatically enlarges the projection of self, being by the ocean reduces your size to something human and smaller. It feels very normalizing, if that means anything anymore. But somehow it is quite as immersive and re-assuring as a good bit of dancing... Nicolaas Maritz, Darling, July 2021
