It seems the creative minds behind the world’s biggest fashion houses have been brushing up on their art history and whilst there have found a bountiful stream of inspiration to stitch into spring summer 2014. Christopher Bailey at Burberry Prorsum is another who has turned to the art world, taking in a spot of literature on the way. In case the bright, poppy colour palette and relaxed tailoring didn’t give the game away, Bailey helpfully named the collection ‘Writers and Painters’. As one who is consistently patriotic in his influences, Bailey

name checked Brits, declaring it “a celebration of artistic and intellectual spirit, with a nod and a wink to Alan Bennett and David Hockney”. Fitting, given the runway showcase marked the venerable English label’s move from Milan to the London Fashion Week schedule. Taking a light approach, garments were constructed from cashmere, silk and linen—outwear often consisted of gossamer knit tanks, shirt jackets or paperweight versions of the signature trench. The odd burst of graphic spots and stripes amped up the artiness.
