I'm a transportation, industrial and CAD designer who having grown up in an agricultural environment established a respect for simplicity in design from young age, which still today is reflected in my ethos that design is in the details as a result of function rather than form. In a world with an ever increasing population, cities are becoming increasingly crowded for motor vehicles. In attempt to combat this a new urban delivery vehicle was designed for the Renault brand, taking into account the limitations of the city and the brand's core values.

A new improved vehicle design, tailored to markets need would not only increase the mobility and with it living standards in the area, but could also become a long life, practical possession, and a unconcern in periods of adverse weather.


Hose Down Interior:

Interior Design:

With an easy clean, durable interior, the entirety of the vehicle can be hosed down thanks to a draining floor and waterproof bench seating.

Plastic Body Mouldings: Large plastic body mouldings covering the front, sides and rear of the vehicle reduce repair cost and ease whilst adding to the 'rugged' aesthetic.

A minimalist interior, making use of flat floors and thin profile seating gives for maximum space inside the cabin, whilst also reducing the vehicle's cost and weight. Multi functioning bench seating utilises the passenger count available for a vehicle of this size category.

Extra Raised Ride Height: A raised body height has been utilised as a method of damage prevention in flooding situations as well as for offroad driving conditions.

Self Inflating, Adaptive Wheels:

Concept Information

With a Kevlar lined tyre, and self inflating inner tubes, the vehicle can adapt the tyre's width and profile dependant on the weather and road's condition.


Design Sketches


With Autodesk's Alias software being a major design tool in the Automotive world, it is a necessity to know the software comfortably. By replicating a Little Tikes car, I learnt the basics of Alias and continue now to further develop my skills with it.

Utilising a number of the software's features the model was created with accuracy in mind, replicating the original as well as possible.

A Little Tikes car was chosen due to it's complex curvature and requirement for a large coverage of tools to be used during modelling.


With the product's inherent unsymmetrical design, car was taken to model the product both accurately but also time effectively.

Rendered in Keyshot 4 to give a better visual representation of the original product, the model has been produced with visuals in mind.


More and more people are moving to urban environments causing cities to grow ever large. With the majority of the World's population now city based, if this trend continues into 2025, our current vehicle usage ways will cause major problems in our future world. And so designing a new vehicle,the system of driving and production is a vital requirement.

Futuristic Design Language A sharp, futuristic design language was used to differentiate the vehicle from other cars on the road, yet fit comfortably in the brand image and vehicle line up of the Smart brand. Sporting a fully customisable exterior, panels can be replaced with ease to allow for a two tone exterior, iconic with the Smart brand whilst large glass areas give the cabin a light, airy feel, that of a much larger vehicle, giving a nicer, more comfortable driving experience.


This project relied on much more than the vehicle's design itself. After producing a detail scenario of a possible 2025 future, the entire system around the vehicle was considered from vehicle production, sales and driving experience to how the vehicle would end its life in an economic and environmentally aware way.

3d Printed Batteries The vehicle's batteries are printed within the car chassis making up part of the rear frame. Placing the batteries behind the driver opens up more space for passengers.

Rear In-wheel Motors Twin, rear in-wheel motors provide the vehicle's propulsion. Used within the rear wheels for better grip levels as the vehicles main mass is over the rear axle.

Product Development Possibly my main task whilst working with Biz Karts was development of a number of on kart products such as bodywork, electronics housings and mounting brackets. From this I learnt the process of prototyping and revising parts in attempt to develop a product to be mass production ready.

As part of my second year of study, I completed a six month internship at Biz Karts, the UK's leading manufacturer of rental and off-road karts. During my time there I worked on a number of projects using the skills I had gained from my studies and also newly developed skills I had acquired on the job. As one of few design team members I had a large role in new developments many of which are now in production.

Reverse Engineering

One of my first roles in the company was to document and reverse engineer a number of the existing karts in Solidworks creating a digital library of parts and assemblies in attempt to aid and increase future product development. This required precision measurement and modelling skill as new parts were directly modelled in Solidworks for manufacture.

Biz Karts produce a variety of karts with differing propulsion systems. Working closely with electrical and mechanical engineers I developed a keen understanding of the karts' drivetrain and designed a number of parts designed to increase the performance and efficiency of the vehicles produced.


Visual Presentation With the business relying on sales of the products to survive, I was given the task of providing visual presentations both internally and to potential customers on the future of the brand and upcoming products as well as providing visuals for brochures, catalogues and advertising.

Manufacturing Working closely with both internal and external manufacturers, I experienced the processes involved in the production of sheet metal, vacuum formed and 3D printed parts. As part of my role at Biz Karts, I was responsible for creating technical drawings for parts manufacture.


Design Although significantly more advanced in technology, as a aim of the original brief, the kart aims to retain the traditional kart feel and aesthetic in attempt to appeal to current experience karters and encourage new users to the sport.

With an ambition to look into the future of karting, Biz Karts requested me to design a new kart for the year 2025, looking into a number of areas to find a viable kart proposition suitable for a number of applications including indoor and circuit racing.

Driver Aids Rather than traditionally displaying driving telemetry on the kart, an in helmet projection will allow the drive to have a heads up display on their visor eliminating the need to look down for readings.

Located within the kart's floor, when used with a similarly equipped pit lane, the kart can charge whilst stationary reducing the need for plug in charging between race sessions.


Luxury is a difficult concept to define, with everyone's perception of luxury different how can a truly luxury product be effectively designed for economic production? I aimed to do this however with a new exclusive trainer design concept aimed at 20-30 year old males.

With the future of the New York taxi cab uncertain, I was briefed to design a new ground up vehicle to become the next New York cab. With an iconic status being a major selling point of cab travel in the city, the design of the vehicle is imperative to its success.

// Flexible Interior With sliding front and rear seating users can tailor their interior space to their passenger and luggage needs. Folding front seats allow for upto two wheelchair users or for seating upto five when folded down, allowing for two different configurations.

A lithium ion battery pack located underneath the vehicle's floor powers a motor over the rear axle. Utilising a separate dash and centre console, the interior features a large surface area for buttoning and interfaces. Completely modular, all dials, touchscreen and button units are removable, allowing for defective or old parts to be replaced, upgraded or customised easily by the user.

Design Award 2016 With a brief to your own personal vision of what mobility will be by 2050, the Move Design Award is a world renown student competition with a jury of leading design professionals and trend gurus of all different levels of society.

Presentation Looking at a concept for the future I looked at a presentation method from the past, taking inspiration from pop art and comic styles to create a juxtaposing design presentation.

The Vehicle Utilising a streamlined, aerodynamic design, teamed with a revolutionary folding chassis concept and 360 degree rear ball steering the vehicle is far removed than anything seen on the roads today.


Design Award 2016 Although this project was carried out in just three weeks, a wide range of future gazing research and blue sky thinking was involved in the design process, an interesting differentiator to the majority of design briefs I have tackled.

Road Network The network is made up of a series of bio-solar ground level and raised roadways used exclusively by the concept vehicle, allowing it to dock to the side of buildings whilst also allowing the vehicle to join existing road infrastructures.

User Story Aimed at single passengers travelling between high rise buildings within the city, the concept's exclusivity is aimed at high-end, business clientele and aims to be the fastest inter city transportation system.


AFASI

A Vehicle for Africa

The Nafasi, an innovative, locally sourced and manufactured vehicle for Sub-Saharan Africa aims to tackle the continent's ever growing transportation crisis. The concept is intended as a multi-purpose vehicle, performing both on and off-road, as an agricultural machine and as a generating power source for the continent's rural populations.

The 'Nafasi' name is derived from the Swahili word for opportunity.

AFASI

A Vehicle for Africa

Development of the vehicle saw input from a number of sources, with technical industry experts aiding in the chassis design, whilst potential end users in Sub-Saharan Africa were involved in determining the functionality and form the vehicle took.

// Target Users Aimed at those poorest in Sub-Saharan Africa, the vehicle is intended as a community vehicle. As a result the vehicle's cost can be split over a number of users or can be a sponsored vehicle through charity donations.

// Chassis Technology

Concept Details

Made up of bamboo lengths and a series of DMLS aluminium connecting parts the chassis has great strength whilst being light weight. In addition through using these connecting parts in different orientations, the chassis design can take different configurations to produce different vehicle types.

// Interior Design Utilising bench seating, the vehicle can offer seating for upto ten over three rows. These bench seats can also fold horizontal making a bed like structured from the vehicle's floor or can be removed from the vehicle entirely.
