ast month, we published an article written by Paul, a sole trader who wanted to share with other gas engineers how his anxiety can affect his day-to-day working life. We’ve had a big response to the article from engineers who wanted to thank Paul for his honesty, and to tell us that this reflects their own experiences too. We know that not everyone is comfortable talking about how they feel, but also that more people are suffering from anxiety in these difficult times. Some readers have already told us about how they manage their own anxiety – and we’d like to share these in a future article in this magazine. If you’d like to be a part of this important feature in early 2021, and share your own experiences – as well as any tips you may have on how you cope with anxiety – please email us at editorial@ registeredgasengineer.co.uk and we’ll let you know how you can support. As 2020 draws to a close, we’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your support throughout a difficult year for everyone, and to wish you a restful, healthy and merry Christmas – and a happy 2021. t the start of the year, Gas Safe Register took to the streets of Birmingham to dispense bacon butties (and vegetarian alternatives) to hungry shoppers at the Bullring. The emergency butty van also shared life-saving information on the dangers of CO. The UK’s favourite breakfast hangover cure was a mouthwatering way of highlighting the similarity between the symptoms of a hangover and those of CO poisoning. Gas Safe Register chief executive Jonathan Samuel said: “It is really important to be Better

Gas Safe Than Sorry. Staying safe includes being aware of the symptoms of CO poisoning. “If people are suffering from hangover-like symptoms, such as headaches or nausea, but haven’t been drinking alcohol, it is important to consider CO poisoning alongside other possible causes.” The eye-catching bacon butty event was featured by ITV News, the Sun, TalkRadio and the Daily Mirror, among other media, and the campaign helped to drive 30 per cent more visits to Gas Safe’s website than the same period the previous year.

year in campaigns TV advertising Gas Safe Register’s TV ads have appeared regularly in 2020, starring dad Jack Corner who is obsessed with corners but who would never cut them – especially when it comes to gas safety. The ads are a great reminder that Gas Safe registered engineers are the only people who are qualified to carry out gas work in the UK’s homes.

Gas Safety Week 2020 The 10th anniversary of the industry’s biggest annual gas safety event focused on the importance of communities, and looking out for those around us who are vulnerable. And this focus was particularly relevant

during a year dominated by the COVID pandemic. Gas Safe Register research found that Britons’ sense of community is here to stay, with 57 per cent of people saying they are taking better care of themselves specifically so they can do their part of protect the health of their neighbours. Gas Safe’s striking short film, the Ripple Effect, showed the devastating impact that an innocent gas safety slip in any one home can have on the wider neighbourhood. Safety starts at home The latest wave of Gas Safe Register advertising started in the autumn, rolling across TV, radio, press and online. The ads remind people that gas safety starts at home: a message that resonates strongly as people spend more time indoors this winter. The ads show the warm glow that comes from homes that are gas safe, and reminds people how and where to search for their registered gas engineer with a simple three-word reminder: Search, Service, Safe.

Maintaining your ACS qualifications A message from the Standard Setting Body. As you will be aware, the Health and Safety Executive and Gas Safe Register permitted a six-month extension to ACS qualification lifespans to permit the registration status of those engineers who are unable to undertake their ACS reassessment as a result of pandemic restrictions. These extension periods will expire in accordance with the parameters set out below. To maintain your Gas Safe Registration beyond these parameters, you must ensure that expired ACS qualifications are renewed within the relevant timescales as detailed below: Engineers whose ACS qualifications expired before

1 October 2020, and who were unable to book ACS reassessment, have been permitted to remain on the Register for up to six months from the expiry date on their ACS certificate while they arrange for re-assessment. Engineers with ACS qualifications that expired on or after 1 October 2020 need to renew their qualifications by 31 March 2021. Engineers with ACS qualifications expiring after 31 March 2021 will be required to renew ACS by the qualification expiry date as shown on the certificate. You are strongly advised to renew your ACS qualifications

as soon as possible, to avoid the risk of being unable to access re-assessment due to the expected high demand for re-assessment as extension periods expire. It is important to note that no further extensions to this period will be applied. Engineers without valid ACS qualifications at the point of expiry of any applied extension will be suspended and will be unable to legally carry out gas work. Gas Safe Register business improvement director Mark Rolfe says: “Feedback from assessment providers is that some engineers are cancelling booked re-assessments in order to benefit from the full six-month extension periods and will attempt to re-book closer to

‘Make LPG part of industry conversations’ Last month’s Open Channel event looked at LPG, the role it plays in our industry and in helping the UK on its path to net-zero carbon. Representatives from Liquid Gas UK (formerly known as UKLPG) discussed the trade association’s role in promoting the safe use of LPG, raising the profile of its benefits, the future role of bioLPG, and in creating Codes of Practice – its industry standards. Director Richard Hakeem was keen to encourage engineers working with the gas to make sure that people know that the association has free guidance for consumers, as well as for gas engineers. As with all gases, using them safely is crucial, and Gas Safe’s Carl Banister highlighted some of the frequently asked questions that come through to the technical helpline: many around when over-pressure shut-off (OPSO) regulators are needed, 08 December 2020

Open Channel and what to do about equipment that has a limited lifespan, such as hoses. Carl said that the technical team has received more calls this year about mobile catering, caravans and holiday parks, which may have been due to the increased number of people holidaying in the UK during the pandemic. This highlighted the importance of servicing, maintenance and replacement of LPG equipment. Responding to questions from gas engineers watching the event live, Kaz Dziamarski said that one of LPG’s biggest challenges is

educating consumers that the gas is not a DIY fuel, and that connecting LPG to a domestic property should only be undertaken by an appropriately qualified gas engineer. Richard added that the association has been working hard to incorporate LPG into industry standards – LPG in domestic premises is now covered in BS 6891, for example – and to bring consistency and clarity into its Codes of Practice. One engineer pointed out that some LPG uses are not covered by ACS currently: Carl said the

their extension expiry date. “This approach is disappointing and is placing undue pressure on assessment centre capacity, which could mean that some engineers may find themselves unqualified and suspended from registration. “Assessment centres are encouraged to prioritise assessment for engineers who have not previously cancelled booked re-assessment unless they can demonstrate good reasons for having done so.” Registered Gas Engineer’s 2020 Directory of ACS centres and details of the assessments that they provide starts on page 31 of this edition.

Ten-point plan to tackle climate change could bring 250,00 jobs Last month, Prime Minister Boris Johnson set out the government’s Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution that he said would tackle climate change and create up to 250,000 jobs as part of the drive towards the UK’s 2050 net-zero carbon target. In the plan, the Prime Minister says: “We will turn the UK into the world’s number one

centre for green technology and finance, laying the foundations for decades of economic growth by delivering net-zero emissions in a way that creates jobs and allows us to carry on living our lives.” The government plans include an ambition to fit 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028. Funding was also announced for investment

including offshore wind, carbon capture and storage, nuclear plants and hydrogen. The government says it will invest in new hydrogen production to generate enough of the gas to heat a whole town by the end of this decade, and to build large and small-scale nuclear reactors. It also wants to quadruple the production of offshore wind power.

The sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans will end in 2030, although hybrid vehicles can continue until 2035. The government pledged to accelerate the roll-out of electric vehicle charging points, as well as promising grants to encourage people to switch. The Green Homes Grant in England will be extended by a year into 2022.

Definition now set for First hydrogen demo under way in hydrogen-ready boilers ‘Hy Street’ homes Baxi Heating and Worcester Bosch hydrogen-burning boilers are working in ‘Hy Street’, in specially built demonstration houses at DNV GL’s specialist test site at Spadeadam, Northumberland. The site has been used to complete more than 200 tests, researching and proving the safety of converting homes and gas networks to hydrogen. For the first demo, both Worcester Bosch and Baxi Heating have installed combis in the houses on HyStreet. The boilers have been developed as part of the government-funded Hy4Heat programme, which is also supporting the development of hydrogen-ready gas cookers, fires and gas meters. The project is part of H21, a Network Innovation Competition project sponsored by Ofgem. Northern Gas Networks is leading the project with partners Cadent, Scottish Gas Networks, Wales & West Utilities, National Grid, DNV GL and HSE’s science division. H21 is demonstrating how existing natural gas networks can carry 100 per cent hydrogen safely. Tim Harwood, Northern Gas Networks’ project director for H21, says: “Seeing the boilers in situ at Spadeadam is an exciting step in the journey to realising 10 December 2020

our goal of a gas network transporting 100 per cent hydrogen to customers. The hydrogen boiler looks and feels just like the natural gas version we all have today and is just as user-friendly, showing that a transition could cause minimal disruption to customers.” Karen Boswell, managing director of Baxi Heating, adds: “This is an important step forward on our hydrogen journey and we are delighted to be able to demonstrate this innovative new technology in a real-life setting.” Carl Arntzen, CEO of Worcester Bosch, says: “It proves that hydrogen gas has great potential as a zero-carbon alternative to natural gas for heating and hot water. “These initial tests are incredibly encouraging and will hopefully give key decisionmakers confidence to deploy hydrogen as a fuel for the future.”

HHIC members have developed a technical specification for hydrogen-ready boilers. The definition will help to ensure that safe products are made ready for a switch from natural gas to hydrogen, along with a pledge that the conversion takes less than an hour to complete by a Gas Safe competent engineer, using manufacturers’ certificated conversion kits. HHIC director Stewart Clements says: “A gas appliance that ‘out of the box’ is designed and approved to be installed for use on natural gas, and following a conversion and re-commissioning process in the home, will then operate safely and efficiently using a hydrogen supply, is essential to deliver a

net-zero heating solution for the vast majority of homes in the UK. “Converting the gas grid to hydrogen requires a boiler that can be converted. Industry has agreed how this should be done, to minimise the cost and impact. “Converting a boiler in less than an hour is less time than it currently takes to service a boiler. This is a huge step forward to help the UK decarbonise, while giving the consumer all the benefits they get at the moment from their heating system.” “These technical developments are an essential ingredient in building the platform to enable a safe and cost-effective switch to a net-zero future.”

CIPHE warning on burns and scalds The CIPHE is warning the government and householders that the risk of burns and scalds this winter is rising as people spend more time at home. The number of contact burns from heating appliances rocketed by 25 per cent and scalding incidents from taps were up by 9 per cent, according to NHS Digital Hospital Episode Statistics for England 2019-2020. The institute is urging the government to extend the legislation on TMVs to make their use compulsory in all homes and to ensure that all those working on plumbing and heating systems are qualified and competent to do so.

Last month’s competition winner

Krzysztof Regula from Stanley, Derbyshire, won a full year of Checkatrade membership. Congratulations!

Thank you to David Rhodes, who sent us this photo of a boiler in cupboard with the condensate pipe ending in…. a vase. David made safe and brought the installation up to standard.

Jason Hearn is showing everyone his sludge – and importance of cleaning out central heating system filters.

Paul Goodchild found these gems: faults with the chimney termination, condense pipework, electrical fused spur position and the undersized gas supply. He made safe and advised his customer to contact Gas Safe Register because the boiler installation had been notified recently.

This ’s monther winn Joel Guy spotted this installation in the car port of a neighbour’s property. The installation has now been made safe.

Steven Elder was asked to quote for some work at a property and came across this relatively new boiler installation. The installation was made safe and the boiler has been relocated.

Simon Ashby was called to look at an old floor-standing boiler. It’s certainly seen better days, and has now been replaced.

Aqbal Singh’s customer had no heat or hot water – and we can see why. Aqbal made safe and the boiler has been retired.

Matt Irvin found this chimney on a boiler he was asked to work on. He made safe and the boiler has been replaced.

Terry Beattie was asked to do a tiling job when he noticed this cooker installation. The installation was made safe and the cooker was replaced with an electric appliance.

Please remember to take pictures at high resolution and email them to editorial@registeredgasengineer.co.uk This month, Anton is giving away its AGM 55 gas leak detector, which is suitable for detecting any combustible gases. It’s robust and simple to use, and detects leaks from as little as 10ppm methane with audible and visual alarm indicators. It has a bright LED searchlight for poorly lit conditions and a flexible gooseneck for those hard-to-reach areas. It also comes with a robust sensor head enclosure (no loose components), side gooseneck clip for safe storage, and standard rubber boot. This month’s winner is Joel Guy from Thatcham, Berkshire. Congratulations!

16 December 2020

Mike Carey was asked to quote for a boiler replacement and found this balanced-chimney boiler installation still operational in an enclosed extension that builders were working on. The service pipework had also been built over. The emergency service provider was called and the installation was made safe.

Are online tutorials setting a good example? During lockdowns, with my enforced reduced workload, I have had the opportunity to study online gas tutorials by experts. These seem to be generally good quality and the experts seem to provide a lot of useful instruction and tips, but I have noted a few things that give me cause for concern. At least a couple of instructors seem to think it is acceptable to have unsleeved gas pipes run through walls (in my opinion this is always At Risk). A couple think it is acceptable to mount boilers on combustible surfaces,

typically ply – in my opinion this is also an At Risk situation. This is contrary to any training I have received, and I have observed badly scorched ply when subjected to heat stress in proximity to a boiler. I observed one video tutorial where a boiler was situated in the prohibited zone of a bath/ shower room and this wasn’t even mentioned. In one video, the instructor hadn’t bothered to put inhibitor in a heating system for many years. Predictably the system failed.

Struggling with anxiety

In another, the instructor hadn’t safely isolated the water supply when working on a boiler, caused a flood and blamed the tenant. And in one, the flue had clearly not been secured with screws and this wasn’t even mentioned. Generally, electrical safety checks seem to be overlooked, and there is poor use of PPE. It concerns me that inexperienced engineers may learn inappropriate behaviours from such sources. David Moss

Thank you for publishing the article from Paul in the Southeast about his battle with anxiety. I, too, have generalised anxiety disorder and can fully identify with his struggles as a gas engineer living with anxiety. When I was diagnosed, it helped that they put a name to what I was feeling and could move forward, which included counselling and medication. I am learning to manage this condition and am feeling more positive. I came close to quitting the industry a couple of years ago but, thankfully, I have a very supportive wife and co-workers. REGISTERED GAS ENGINEER | FLUE GAS ANALYSERS

2020: what a year This year was, and still is, a very difficult year for everyone. Here’s our story, writes Jonathan Kane, CEO of Kane International. January Back to work making and servicing Kane analysers. Our customers use them every day so we’re launching our boldest initiative yet: guaranteed same-day service or your money back. I visit our Chinese distributor because China’s Environmental Protection Agency are using our analysers to test vehicle emissions in Beijing. We’re their only supplier since we started in China 35 years ago. They tell me that a new virus has closed Wuhan, a large city in China.

February We’re preparing new analysers for launch in July: it’s our first new look for 20 years, with 10-year warranties, wireless connectivity, and guaranteed same-day service via www.kane.co.uk. It’s a significant investment and our new shape is very different. Will customers like them? Trials on appliances using H2 blended gas confirm that our FGAs, independently tested to EN50379, work so customers can use them for years to come. The UK now has more than 16 million high-efficiency, low-polluting boilers and I can’t see heat pumps replacing them anytime soon. COVID is front-page news: China’s in lockdown and now Europe and North America are affected.

April COVID’s hurricane hits hard, customers disappear and wholesalers close. So many decisions but no time. We furlough (miserable), work from home (awful) and plan how to rebuild. Constant pressure by the EUA/HHIC persuades the government that heating engineers are essential so our customers can start working again. I join our Customer Service team, answering calls and processing the few orders we receive. With many wholesalers closed, it’s a nightmare for customers who can’t get their analysers back. International sales fall away as the world stops turning. Should we continue with our July product launch and guaranteed same-day service? Yes, but it’s a big gamble with sales at 40 per cent of normal.

August Our team are back, new analysers are selling well and supply just meets demand. We start planning for next year, but how? Will COVID derail everything? What about our international sales?

March We discuss Brexit with our EU customers – international sales are half of our business. Paperwork will be a nightmare, even with a deal, so we decide our French warehouse will become our European hub. COVID dominates, so we start daily updates to our team. Social distancing is a thing, customer visits stop and everyone’s working from home – which is a real problem for us and our customers.

May The government’s furlough scheme works, as does the bounceback loan scheme. We have cash and a small order book. If this is our future, we’ll survive. Three times more customers use www.kane.co.uk to organise their service and we keep our same-day promise, which is a miracle.

June and July After long days and sleepless nights, our launch starts with social media teaser ads: more than 1,200 customers register their interest. We launch two new analysers with a cool video, a double-page ad in Registered Gas Engineer magazine and a 35-page catalogue for customers to keep. Within hours, orders arrive and it’s clear that customers like our design, functionality, 10-year warranty and guaranteed same-day service.

September Our North American colleagues place orders as though nothing’s happened. We’ve been there years and it’s reassuring to see them back in the game. Schools re-open and talk of a COVID second wave starts.

October Service returns hit new highs as customers trust our guaranteed same-day service, posting generous reviews on Trustpilot. Our UKAS laboratory is successfully audited for another year. It means we can provide the highest metrological test and recalibration service for our customers’ analysers. Customers are now buying Kane in significant numbers and sales are 50 per cent higher than last year, so we’re expanding rapidly to meet demand.

November Another lockdown in England: very frustrating. Our team are working hard to ensure business as usual but it’s not easy, given how their lives are affected. We renew our support for CALM, the charity campaigning against living miserably: COVID has significantly increased everyone’s mental stress and we hope CALM can help people working or living in difficult circumstances. Will a vaccine be ready by Christmas?

December The most unimaginable year is ending and we’ll need a break to prepare for 2021. I just hope everyone has a peaceful Christmas and a much happier New Year.

REGISTERED GAS ENGINEER | FLUE GAS ANALYSERS

The benefits of Bluetooth When you next consider upgrading your flue gas analyser, it’s worth taking a look at those with Bluetooth technology; it doesn’t cost a lot more but could potentially save you hours a week, says Anton sales director Damian Cairns.

T

here’s an app for almost everything these days, and that includes flue gas analysers (FGAs). In fact, in order for your analyser to interact with the increasing number of applications out there, it will need to be Bluetooth-enabled. Being Bluetooth-enabled means that report data is sent from the analyser directly to a phone or tablet rather than physically printing the report. Many engineers are still using printers to generate their proof of the readings they’ve taken, but more and more are realising the benefits of Bluetooth reporting. Saved time: sending report data into a landlord’s gas safety record (LGSR) at the touch of a button is a lot faster and more efficient than filling out the paperwork by hand, inputting the data by hand into the form, printing the FGA report in duplicate and attaching it to LGSR copies. You can email reports immediately, too, further cutting down on admin time. Total accuracy: no errors in inputting the data from the screen of the FGA to your LGSR or other reports. Incomplete reports or putting the decimal in the wrong place on a ratio become a thing of the past. Traceability: Every report created electronically can be traced back to the serial number of the FGA that created the data, to the date and time the test was completed and the calibration-due date of the instrument. Some apps tag the GPS coordinates of where the device was when the report was created to further prove that the readings were taken at the right place and time with a suitably calibrated instrument. Save money: Once you go paperless, you don’t need to buy pads – not to mention the time saved by not having to fill in the paperwork and then send the duplicate copies to landlords, etc. Create a more professional image: When a customer receives an electronic gas report

22 December 2020

The Pro3 is the first FGA in Anton’s current range with the Bluetooth chip installed. Pro1 can’t support Bluetooth technology. Pro2 isn’t equipped with it either, although it can be upgraded during annual calibration if you want to add Bluetooth connectivity. We can see that interest in going paperless will only increase as more and more apps integrate with the technology and more gas engineers realise the benefits and time savings that Bluetooth can bring. by email, they generally don’t want to receive the paper version that they can’t read and now have to file. PDFs of all their reports are easy to find and easy to re-send if your customer needs another copy. COVID-19 Another benefit of Bluetooth is that being able to create reports on your phone/tablet and email them directly to your customer not only saves time (meaning you have to spend less time in the property) but also means one less physical interaction with the customer. From a COVID-19 risk-management point of view, these are highly desirable for you and your customer. On the subject of COVID-19, we (Anton) received a huge number of enquiries as to whether we’d remain open during the

first lockdown. The majority of these enquiries were relating to customers needing to get their FGAs serviced and calibrated. By introducing strict social distancing rules and other measures in line with government recommendations, we were able to remain fully operational through

the whole lockdown period and will continue to do the same through the remainder of the pandemic. Heating engineers are relied upon by their customers to maintain their hot water and heating, which is even more essential during the winter months. An FGA is a vital tool for heating engineers to ensure they can look after their customers: we recognise the need to support all our customers through this time and we will continue to provide full service, calibration and sales support accordingly. ■ www.anton-group.com

There are apps to suit all business sizes, including those that are free to download and use (on iOS and Android), such as Anton’s Sprint Mobile app, which is ideally suited to sole traders and smaller companies. There are also subscription-based apps that offer a complete solution for bigger organisations that want to send jobs to field-based engineers, as well as receiving all the data and reports back electronically to one database. Anton has partnered with several market-leading apps to provide this. With Benchmark now offering the ability to complete the boiler commissioning checklist through an app, there are plans to improve this further with Bluetooth connectivity to analysers, so that those all-important combustion readings can be sent instantly from the FGA to complete the Benchmark report. You’ll need a Bluetoothenabled FGA in order to take advantage of this.

REGISTERED GAS ENGINEER | FLUE GAS ANALYSERS

How your FGA can help boost your bottom line Making use of the technology that comes with your flue gas analyser can help you with the challenges posed by working in today’s ‘new normal’ world, writes TPI’s Peter Philpott.

T

he costs of running your business are likely to need to be re-evaluated – and this is where technology in a redesigned unit can allow for a much lower list price, by using existing hardware such as your mobile phone or tablet to calculate and display readings, as well as tapping into other features such as GPS for providing proof of when and where tasks were performed. But don’t stop there: look for an enhanced system that includes functions such as a flue gas and temperature sampling probe with water-stop technology – this kind of functionality comes from companies that have been manufacturing flue gas analysers for a long time. Using existing mechanical accessories reduces the need for gas engineers to fork out more money on standard accessories, again keeping costs down. In addition, look for fixed low-cost annual servicing, ease of return and quick turnaround. Human error is reduced by integrating the FGA readings directly into forms, such as landlords’ gas safety records, by integrating with job managementtype apps, and even directly into your existing system. This results in potentially fewer revisits, which in turn helps with social distancing – not to mention saving time and money. Contact-free reporting and e-mails mean that no physical paperwork needs to be handed over to the customer. Everything can be done electronically either on site or from a head office once they’ve received your e-mailed reports. All of this, plus systems with useful alerts, warnings and notifications that are designed to keep the FGA running from one annual recertification to the next, reduces the potential for human interaction by making sure the unit isn’t being returned unnecessarily, which in turn also helps with lower running costs.

Flexibility Kits that can be built separately and in stages can give greater flexibility than a traditional all-in-one FGA, which eases the burden of cost. Connecting to your system or apps ensures that, as technology moves on through the years, so do the features that will be available through the app. Look for FGAs that calculate, display, store and print the readings, and that send live readings to your smart phone or tablet, using the power of your mobile phone in a way that just can’t be done with a traditional FGA. And dedicated apps can address any necessary changes to working practices quicker and more efficiently, by pushing out an update that everyone gets, rather than a traditional FGA where the unit needs to be returned to the factory for a firmware update. Using the technology in your FGA can reduce costs, lighten your workload, keep the FGA running from day to day and streamlines the annual recalibration procedure. It provides security for gas engineers working in the ‘new normal’, as well as their customers. ■

REGISTERED GAS ENGINEER | FLUE GAS ANALYSERS

Getting the best from your analyser Flue gas analysers are an essential tool in routine boiler servicing and maintenance – but it’s important to make sure that you use your FGA correctly to avoid errors and ensure trouble-free operation, says Testo product manager Jon Bawden.

C

orrect usage, care, maintenance and servicing of your analyser will leave you confident in your readings and should help to keep your instrument running for years to come. Here a re some top tips for operating and looking after your flue gas analyser correctly:

Make sure you have to hand all the manufacturer information about your specific analyser. Always empty the condensate trap to make sure that no water can be sucked into the analyser. Water can cause the sensors to become damaged and potentially provide incorrect readings. You should also make sure that the condensate bung is re-fitted correctly after emptying the condensate trap. Make sure to shake out any liquid in the flue gas probe before connecting it your analyser. Make sure that your analyser has enough battery charge to complete the test: it’s no good to you with a flat battery. Don’t run the analyser while the battery charger is connected because this could provide incorrect readings. Purge your analyser with fresh air before and after every use: the flue gas probe must be connected during this process. To help prevent incorrect readings, wait until the boiler has warmed up before inserting the probe into the flue. This is because high levels of CO can damage the sensors inside the analyser. Always make sure you have the correct analyser for the appliance under test. Testo analysers designed for domestic use have sensors capable of 26 December 2020

“A well-maintained flue gas analyser with a current and valid certificate of calibration is vital in getting you through busy months.” measuring up to 4,000ppm of CO. For bigger boilers, the Testo 300LL allows measurement without damage up to 30,000ppm of CO due to its unique dilution system. Only run the analyser pump when taking a reading. If the analyser is left running unobserved, it can be subject to high levels of CO on boiler start-up and will unnecessarily pull excess condensate into the water trap. This will also deplete the battery needlessly. It is important to check that the particle filter in

the probe is clean and not wet. Replace the filter when oil deposits blacken the whole of the filter, and change the filter if it is wet. If the filter is wet but not contaminated, it will dry naturally in the carry case. It’s good practice to make sure that you have a clean and dry filter at all times in case you need to make a change. Look after your analyser by storing it in a warm, dry place overnight. Condensation can form internally within the sensors, or even on the circuit board, which can cause damage. ■ www.testo.com/en-UK

Servicing Get your flue gas analyser serviced regularly, particularly when approaching the busy winter months, in order to ensure everything is fully functioning when you carry out tasks such as boiler maintenance and repairs. A well-maintained flue gas analyser with a current and valid certificate of calibration is vital in getting you through the season while maintaining safety standards and completing your job efficiently. Regular servicing and calibration of your instrument will help to ensure your customer’s safety and give you confidence in your readings.

REGISTERED GAS ENGINEER | ACS DIRECTORY

Centres and Assessments This year’s directory of the ACS centres throughout the UK is published later than we had anticipated at the start of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic affected this area of our industry, as it did so many others, with centres having to close in March and for the duration of the first national lockdown. Most centres have now re-opened but are operating at less capacity than in the past because of social distancing requirements, and some are booked up to two months ahead – which means that you may need to plan ahead to maintain your gas safety competence. If you have not been able to take your re-assessments when required, Gas Safe Register will extend your registration temporarily ONLY in the following circumstances: • If your ACS qualifications expired before 1 October 2020, and you have been unable to book ACS re-assessment, you may remain on the Register for up to six months from the expiry date on your ACS certificate while you arrange for re-assessment. EAST 1st Training Domestic: CCN1, CENWAT, CKR1, CPA1, DAH1, HTR1, LAU1, MET1 Commercial: COCN1, CDGA1, CIGA1, COCNPI1 LS, CODNCO1, CORT1, ICAE1 LS, ICPN1, ICPN1 LS, TPCP1, TPCP1A Catering: CCCN1, CMC1, COCATA1, CODC1, COMCAT 1,3 LPG: CONGLP1 PD, RPH, LAV, CCLP1 B, LAV, RPH, HTRLP2, HTRLP3, REFLP2, WATLP2 Unit 24, Roman Way, London Road, Godmanchester, Huntingdon, PE29 2LN Tel: 01480 450872 www.1st-training.co.uk e: info@1st-training.co.uk

• If your ACS qualifications expired on or after 1 October 2020, you must renew your qualifications by 31 March 2021. If your ACS qualifications expire after 31 March 2021, you must renew your ACS by the qualification expiry date as shown on the certificate. You MUST maintain your Gas Safe registration if you are carrying out gas work during any extension period applied due to ACS expiry during the pandemic. The ACS centres listed on these pages are those that responded to our questions and confirmed their information. This is not an exhaustive list of all UK ACS and gas training centres. Registered Gas Engineer takes no responsibility for the accuracy of any information on these pages.

Don’t forget that you can take re-assessments up to six months before they expire, MOT-style. And don’t forget to allow enough time for the certification body to download the results of your assessment to Gas Safe Register – this can take several weeks. Training is not a prerequisite for assessment.

REGISTERED GAS ENGINEER | PRODUCT FOCUS

Dip, check and chat Colin Yearp at Adey looks at how you can have an effective conversation with your customers about the importance of heating health care.

P

eople are naturally being more careful about their money during this uncertain period. So it can be tough to upsell additional services, even if they will prolong the life of their heating systems and save them money in the long run. But carrying out a robust water test, the results of which are verified by an independent third party, means that people can see the condition of their system water. This, in turn, will help you to discuss with them the importance of keeping their system water clean. Unlocking the conversation Our independent market research found that only about one-third of heating engineers recommend fitting a filter, even when they are repairing a boiler breakdown. The most common reason, they say, is

that fitting a filter would add to the cost of their quote and make it look too high. However, the financial risk of not keeping system water clean could be even higher. Replacing boiler parts or a full boiler replacement is a reluctant expenditure and these consequences are more likely more further down the line if system health is not maintained properly. Taking preventative action to prevent magnetite (sludge) from building up in the first place can also improve the efficiency of the heating system and save money on heating bills. Seeing is believing The problem with dirty water is that it’s hidden away inside the heating system, out of sight and out of mind. Using a water test

shows the homeowner what’s happening inside their system and so they understand the ill-effects of a poorly maintained heating system. The most common water testing method used for homes is dip testing because this provides instant results. The latest connected technology makes it simpler and more cost effective to carry out: Adey’s ProCheck, for example, enables you to carry out a simple on-site analysis of water health in a system, and carry out remedial action at the same visit, using the test kit and the dedicated app on your smartphone. Much like a laboratory test, Adey ProCheck looks specifically at the three main areas of concern: protective inhibitor levels, the level of

corrosion through iron measurement, and the pH level present. A report is created immediately and any problems with dirty system water can be identified there and then. You can refer to the report to talk to your customer about the possible consequences of leaving the problems untreated. Using technology to modernise the checking the quality of system water means that your prices can remain attractive to your customers without compromising on your quality of service. ■ www.adey.com

Productnews Warm to K3 radiators from Stelrad

Rhino enhances PipeTube

Stelrad has brought out new K3 versions of its popular Elite, Compact with Style and Planar series. The new radiators are in response to an increase in demand for K3s, and each range comes in 40 sizes. A K3 radiator has three sets of panels and three sets of fins to ensure that additional heat is emitted from a radiator only a little larger than a K2. The K3 is the ideal choice for low-energy systems, providing outstanding heat output from a smaller footprint. The convectors are precision-welded directly on to the waterways for greater efficiency and economy, with flexible connection options. All models come with a five-year warranty. Stelrad head of marketing Chris Harvey says: “As we head towards 2025 and the government’s stipulated deadline for [ending] installing fossil-fuel-driven heating systems in new-build properties, we will see the numbers of renewable heating systems increase, and demand for these bigger radiators increase, or in the K3’s case, higher-capacity radiators but on a similar radiator footprint to a K2.” www.stelrad.com

Rhino has redesigned its popular 3m PipeTube for securely and safely transporting copper pipe, plastic conduit and other similar materials. The PipeTube Pro includes an optional full-length PVC lining to the tube to stop the galvanic

Aqualisa goes Uptown with brassware

Home heating health monitoring from Tado

Aqualisa has introduced a new, high-quality range of brassware: a bath/shower mixer tap with a ‘microphone’ handset has been added to the Aqualisa basin mixer tap and deck-mounted bath filler to create the new Uptown range. The range provides a coordinated bathroom look and customers can choose products

Tado’s Care & Protect provides 24/7 monitoring of home heating systems to keep them in good health. It detects boiler faults, tells users how to fix them or who to call, and helps to minimise the outage time of heating systems to guarantee a warm and comfortable home. The company has analysed millions of heating system outages of Tado customers, and found that, in 60 per cent of cases, users can fix the problem themselves on the same day. Care & Protect monitors the heating system around the clock and keeps the user up to date with important information about its performance and health. The smart thermostats are connected to the customer’s heating system and know how it usually behaves.

from a single source. Uptown taps also provide an attractive, standalone brassware range. Aqualisa CEO Colin Sykes says: “Specialists are constantly looking for options and upgrades from recognised, trusted brands that suit a variety of bathroom configurations. The wider range of Uptown brassware paves the way for our introduction of more tap variants.” Uptown taps can be matched with the Mian DCV mixer range to create a contemporary and stylish suite of bathroom brassware, ideal for new-build installations and refurbishment projects. The small and large Uptown singlelever monobloc basin taps include a push-open waste, while the bath shower mixer features a sleek, robust body, smooth turn levers and integrated diverter, with all components supplied in one box and guaranteed for five years. Colin adds: “The Uptown range introduces quality brassware to the established Aqualisa portfolio and is very much a new business opportunity for us. “These are exciting times for the Aqualisa brand and a strong brassware offering will only enhance our sector credentials in the months and years ahead.” www.aqualisa.co.uk

reaction that can otherwise take place, discolouring the pipes stored inside. There’s also an upgraded integral locking system, an added rubber seal to reduce water entering the tube and a new stylish design. www.rhinoproducts.co.uk

If Tado detects an unusual pattern, users get a notification on their smartphone. When the user starts the self-fix guidance, they are asked for more details about the heating set-up to determine the issue more precisely and to offer the best solution. In a few simple steps, Tado Care & Protect guides the user through the self-fix process: for example, if the boiler needs a restart or if radiators should be bled. If users feel uncomfortable working on the heating system or encounter any problems during the self-fix process, they have the option to book a trusted professional or get help from a suggested engineer via the Tado Boiler Repair Service. www.tado.com

Productnews > Press F8 for Fernox power cleaner Fernox’s new Power Cleaner F8 is an effective, citric acid-based cleaner designed to remove corrosion, scale and other debris in heavily contaminated, sludged central heating systems. It restores and maintains optimum efficiency and reduces the risk of breakdown, says the company. The new formula is fast-acting and powerful and includes a high concentration of key active ingredients. One 500ml bottle can tackle even the dirtiest central heating systems in over 97 per cent of UK homes. Power Cleaner F8 can accelerate and aid the cleaning process and is suitable for use with manual,

magnetic or powerflushing cleans alike. The high-strength cleaner is non-foaming, which means less time on site to remove residual cleaner from the system. Its pH-neutral formulation means that no follow-up neutraliser product is required. One 500ml bottle can treat central heating systems up to 130 litres (16 single radiators) or 250m2 of an underfloor heating system. Its non-toxic formula is compatible with all metals and materials commonly used in central heating systems and is developed for use with Fernox inhibitor products. Head of chemistry Richard Crisp says: “We want to ensure that each type of system cleaning – including powerflushing – is even easier and faster for installers to complete using the new Power Cleaner F8.” www.fernox.com

Continal leaps into UFH controls with Quantum Continal Underfloor Heating has unveiled a new set of UFH controls. The Quantum range is compatible with the Amazon Echo Alexa system straight out of the box. Designed to be easy to set up and intuitive to use, the entire range comes with a five-year guarantee. The Quantum family includes a stylish digital thermostat and simple-to-use rotary dial thermostat, both available in wired and wireless versions. The hub links all Quantum products to the Smart Home app and the property’s internet connection. There is also a Quantum actuator with low energy consumption of just 2W, and a wiring centre that provides easy push-fit connection for all connected devices. Continal founder Chris Ingram says: “We wanted a more stylish, easier to use, and simpler to install controls system, but none were available so we worked with our partners to come up with Quantum – the next-gen of UFH controls. It’s intuitive and the connections are easy.” www.ufh.co.uk
