One of the Best? “Ibiza Is Having One Of Its Best Tourist Seasons” says President of Ibiza Consell, Vicent Torres.

We report on the President’s statement and the responses it received. Plus in more tourism news, "We Must Preserve That Which Makes Ibiza Unique & Exceptional" says the President at the ‘Day of the Tourist’ presentations. We report on Ibiza’s Six Million Euro Tourism Technology Project, and give the results of a pretty unscientific ‘State of the Island’ poll.

Day of the Tourist The President of Ibiza Consell, Vicent Torres, has said that “Ibiza is enjoying one of its best seasons for tourism”. Speaking in advance of the island's annual day of the tourist, the president has drawn on air traffic statistics as the basis for his claim of a successful season.

Air Traffic Statistics The Ibizan reported on the air traffic statistics for August 2018 last week. They show a drop of 3.2% in August, the first peak season drop since 2004, although the cumulative figures for the year to date are up 2.24%. Continued on Page 2

‘Women’, Murals by Jerom, Aída Miró & Twoflü We love these public art works, Ibiza murals by Jerom, Aída Miró and Twoflü.  Nick Gibbs The murals are on the walls of the sports tracks at sa bodega on calle Canarias in Ibiza Town. They were presented today by the Ibiza Town Ajuntament. The three portraits of women are from different cultures and ages, however they share a common strength of identity that, to my eye at least, has a particularly Ibizan sense about it. That could be in part due to the clever device of a common background design style and colour palette, but you could imagine all three of these women being indigenous to Ibiza at some point in its long and ethnically diverse history.

Jerom Jerom will be well known to anybody with even a passing interest in the Ibiza art scene. His awesome use continued page 11

President Torres says that this demonstrates a successful season as the aim was never to increase business in July and August, but to spread out tourism more evenly over the season. "The figures tell us that we are on the right track," said Torres. "We have a cumulative of increase of 2.24% of passengers at the airport, despite having decreased in August. For now, we can say that this year we had a very good tourist season. We have confirmed the good prospects we announced to the fairs last winter"

Day of the Tourist Torres was speaking at the presentation to announce the events of the Day of the Tourist that will be celebrated with different activities in the five municipalities, organized by the town councils and the Consell. The programme runs from Thursday 20th until Sunday 23rd. Included in the schedule are guided tours, open days, exhibitions, workshops and tastings related to the heritage, natural spaces, traditions and cuisine of the island. The President said that the day of the tourist is a day that serves to "give public thanks to all the people who choose Ibiza for their holiday every year. We have to be very grateful and we have to convey the message to the citizens of Ibiza that we need to take care of tourism," said the president, who is also responsible for the Department of Tourism of the Council. The presentation was attended by the insular director of Tourism, Vicent Torres Ferrer, and the councillors of tourism of the five municipalities of the island.

Editorial Comment. I am all for not talking ourselves into an unwarranted and counter-productive mire of despair, but to describe 2018 as one of Ibiza's most successful seasons will be stretching positivity to beyond breaking point for the majority of tourism reliant businesses I have spoken to this year. The Balearic Institute of Statistics produce a whole raft of tourism statistics. FITUR, EGATUR and Human Pressure Indicators all have useful counts, but the headline grabbing Air Traffic statistics produced by the airport authority AENA and quoted by the President in support of his claims, are the most fundamentally flawed of all. We explained why in our report on the August air traffic statistics last week. If the president is putting a brave face on for the media, he may be forgiven for doing what he sees as his job and duty. But if he genuinely believes that 2018 is one of our best seasons he is alarmingly out of touch with the view on the street.

Response by Gif Following publication of the report on the Ibizan website the social media responses of Island residents and regulars were swift and numerous. The general theme was one of disbelief, and the extent of it was reflected in Gif form, we have never known such a deluge of mini-animations, from head shaking cats to celebs by the bucketload. But there are always exceptions. Amanda Sidlow reflected the view of those who think the changing nature of the island is a good thing. “Well I can tell you that the dive centre in Port Des Torrent has been so busy it has had to turn people away and I have heard today that Playa Bella is up on figures for this time of year. Have to say you can actually drive around the lower bay road currently without the risk of hitting masses of drunk people. Maybe the whole dynamic of the island is changing?“ There is certainly merit to that argument, but with so many businesses feeling 2018 as a big hole in their till, it doesn’t alter the fact that the President’s comments were at best ill-considered. Martin Makepeace also thought the president’s comments were poorly timed, and was one of the few who didn’t express their opinion in Gif form. “I like Vicent Torres, he’s a good guy” he said “but this isn’t the time for sweeping statements when the majority of small businesses are struggling. Ibiza is like the Premier League nowadays: the big boys get stronger while the rest hang on by their fingertips trying to eat at the top table.”

 Right: Some of the many Gif responses received

"We Must Preserve That Which Makes Ibiza Unique & Exceptional" President Torres Speaking at the official reception of Ibiza's Day of the Tourist celebrations, Consell President Vicent Torres said "We must preserve that which makes Ibiza unique & exceptional" Five families and two individuals were invited to the reception by the Consell, in order to give recognition to each having given over 25 years loyalty to Ibiza as a holiday destination. Those thanked by President Torres were Spanish, British, Italian and German, and each received a statuette of the goddess Tanit in recognition.

Deepest Gratitude Vicente Torres said "my deepest gratitude to the people that today we pay tribute to their loyalty and love for our island." He continued "Their example should represent an incentive to continue making ourselves worthy of that loyalty."

To make this possible, the president said that "We must preserve that which makes Ibiza unique & exceptional" continuing to say that this must include "respect to its ecological and cultural heritage" and "a commitment to offer its visitors the highest levels of quality and excellence. " Vicente Torres explained that the Consell is working "to develop initiatives and projects to Ibiza, in addition to its beaches and its leisure" with the aim of consolidating Ibiza "as a top notch destination for holding sporting events and for tourism conventions and conferences. Also food or services dedicated to wellness, and all with attention to the preservation and enhancement of our rich natural and historical heritage and creativity." The President said that those tourists acknowledged for their loyalty at the ceremony "are part of the essence of the island, the purest Ibiza, always."

What Do People Think About Where Ibiza Is At? We are not suggesting for one moment that this poll has any level of scientific validity as a representative cross section of public opinion, it is the survey equivalent of written on the bag of a fag packet, and that the re-

spondents were members of Ibiza Winter Residents would give any right minded person cause for question. But for as much interest as it gave us and hopefully you, we asked how people were feeling on Ibiza’s situation, with options from brilliant to doomed. Here are the questions and results...

News 9 Rescued From Sinking Formentera Ferry Six passengers and three crew had to be rescued following an emergency on the Aquabus ferry operating the San Antonio to Formentera route, today Saturday 15th of September. Realising the ferry s’Esturion (the Sturgeon) was sinking, the crew issued a distress call. The ferry was heading towards Formentera off the coast of Es Cubells and Cap Llentrisca. Marine rescue confirmed that the nine occupants, six passengers and three crew members, are safe and sound. They were rescued by the crew of the yacht ‘Roxanne’. The ferry is now about four miles southeast of es Vedrá. The ship is practically sunk. Only the bow now appears above the surface. The shipowner has hired a specialised company to recover it.

San An ‘Superbay’ 20m€ Promenade Extension Green Light 2 Balcony Falls in San Antonio, Both Likely Drug Related There have been two further balcony incidents in San Antonio today, Saturday 15th of September. Neither are fatal. Both have resulted in serious injuries, and are thought most likely to be the result of drug intoxication.

Skinny Kitchen Building, San An Marina In the first incident a man of 30 years fell from the 4th floor onto the patio roof of the ground floor restaurant in the same building. The man speared his leg with the pole of a parasol. The press information released by the emergency services said the man was considered to be intoxicated with drugs. No further information was given.

Jovial Apartments, Formentera Street In the second incident it is understood that a 19 year old British man jumped from a second floor balcony ‘because he thought people were after him’. The responding emergency services said they found the man in a ‘very agitated state’. Though this report did not say the man was on drugs, we feel that jumping from a second floor because of paranoia at 6.25am would indicate a fairly high probability that drugs were involved. The man was taken to hospital where he is said to be in a serious but stable and non-life threatening situation.

Irishman Arrested & Luxury Car Impounded San Antonio's special night summer team police group (ENEV) impounded what they described as a "luxury vehicle" around dawn on Saturday morning. The driver, aged 26 and of Irish nationality, was stopped in a routine check and tested positive for both drink and drugs. The man tried to give the police false or forged identity documentation, to pass himself off as somebody else. He also gave police false documentation for his Irish plated vehicle. The information on the insurance and MOT did not match the plate numbers of the vehicle, leading the police to consider it most likely stolen. The man was arrested and his car impounded.

Albanian Man Arrested for Fake licence In a separate incident at 11pm Saturday night, San Antonio police arrested an Albanian man on the charge of presenting a false driving licence. The man had gone to the police station to claim his vehicle which had been impounded due to a parking violation. He protested that he did not have his driving licence, but ultimately presented the fake document to the police, admitting he had bought it in Albania for 200€ and used it for his holiday.

Plans for a unified San An Promenade linking the entire Portmany Bay took a step closer to realisation today. The mayors of Sant Josep, Josep Marí Ribas Agustinet , and Sant Antoni, José Tur Cires, have participated today, together with technicians from both town halls and Ibiza Consell in a working meeting to plan out the major civil engineering project of San Antonio Promenade. This project foresees an investment of 20 million euros in different initiatives aimed at the recovery of the entire coastline. The proposal is to provide a single continuous promenade for pedestrians and cyclists extending from Cala Gració to Port des Torrent. The project also includes the renovation of sanitation infrastructures, the renovation and expansion of existing docks to improve maritime traffic, and works to minimise the visual impact of existing pumping wells.

The project is co-financed with the majority of money coming from the tourist tax, with contributions from Ibiza Consell and the two town councils. The meeting has defined the timeline and steps required between the administrations involved, in order to fulfill the complex project that affects both municipalities. It is expected that the final green light will be given this autumn. Then the commission for the management of the project will be given to Sant Josep, within which the majority of the works will be undertaken. It has been agreed to create a management office to coordinate the entire project given its scope and complexity. The objective is to start the works in the second half of 2019. 6 Million Euro Tourism Tech Project  Ibiza Consell have an-

nounced details of a multi-faceted hi-tech project which it says will take Ibiza to the forefront of Spain in the use of technology to aid its "sustainable and intelligent tourism".

Ibiza's tourism tech project has a budget of 5,990,601.54 euros. 3,594,360.92 euros will be funded by RED.es and the balance by Ibiza Consell. Details of the various projects are as follows. You'll have to give us a bit of slack on the translations of these, quite a few of the descriptions were full of jargon and hyperbole, so we've stripped them back to the basics that we can make sense of. a) New control centre in Sa Coma To centralise information and locate all the smart infrastructure and the emergency coordination center. b) Improvements in mobility and transport

Equip the bus fleet with a GPS positioning system which will find its location in real time. This can be checked by users on their phone and will be shown automatically in some 'smart' bus shelters with the time until the next bus arrives. Also the availability of places in the limited vehicle access car parks at Benirras, Cala Salada and other beaches. c) Monitoring the quality of sea water. The sea water at Talamanca, Ses Salines d'en Bossa, Santa Eulalia and Benirràs will be monitored using smart buoys. These will measure the quality, temperature and salinity of the water among other data. They will also warn of the presence of illegal spills or breakage of emisaris (sewerage pipes). d) Early detection of forest fires the installation of three surveillance cameras on

communication towers in San Jose de Sa Talaia, San Lorenzo and San Juan. e) Creation of a tourist app including information such as water quality, parking availability, bus times, how busy different beaches are, and the geo-positioning of unique tourist coves, historic buildings and other landmarks. f) Geo-positioning system of remote properties

to facilitate the location of properties that emergency services have difficulty finding. The properties receive a special code which identifies their exact location to emergency services through a mobile phone app.

Timescale The timescale for the bidding process is one year, with implementation over the following two years.

Food & Drink

From crunchy goat’s cheese above, to a new family favourite ‘Bocconchini de Poulet’ top left, we love it all!

David’s Pizzeria Turns 20

David’s is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and it comes as no surprise they are still flourishing. Husband and wife owners Fabrice and Nancy have given the same warm welcome and excellent customer service from the day they opened their doors.

Always a pleasure …  Words Rhian King, Photos Nick Gibbs With Nancy busy with other customers and in our always taking guidance from the chef, Fabrice suggested a few dishes for us to try while our drinks were being prepared.

Caprese Salad The ingredients listed on the menu are ‘tomato, mozzarella, basil and olive oil’, it’s a starter you may well look over on a menu but here I urge you not to. Beautifully presented, so simple and utterly delicious. The tomatoes are large, juicy and full of flavour, the creamiest mozzarella I’ve tried and fresh basil leaves. The flavours work together, but it’s the freshness of everything that brings David’s Caprese salad to another level.

Crunchy Goat Cheese Parcels Goats cheese parcels are settled on a bed of crunchy salad leaves and tomatoes, pine nuts and seeds, all

glazed in a sweet spiced caramel sauce and balsamic vinaigrette and topped with “burnt” onions. It is a perfect yin yang dish, the sweetness of the salad dressing and the occasional hit of acidity from the vinaigrette cut through the goat’s cheese in their parcels to ensure every element compliments each other. As for the “burnt” onions, that is my description, they are the sweetest slithers of onion that add another dimension to the dish. Recommended by the chef for a reason and we agree. On to the pizza element of our review; we couldn’t review David’s without having one of their substantial offerings from the pizza menu with 35 to choose from.

Capricciosa Pizza With two of our reviewers not liking anchovies, Fabrice was kind enough to only add anchovies to half of the pizza, above and beyond in our book. Yet again each ingredient stood out and is well balanced against the others on the pizza; the combination of flavours is excellent. David’s Capricciosa pizza comes with tomato, ham, capers, anchovies, peppers, a boiled egg and black olives. (Con nued on page 6)

News scheme to brings 62 million euros additional revenue to the Balearic Islands. It costs the Balearic Government 13 million euros in subsidised accommodation and transport.

Ibiza Imserso 2018/19 In Ibiza for the 2018/2019 duration of the programme, 7 hotels will be remaining open to cater for the 37,000 holidays offered, a small increase on the 35,000 last year. In some years Imserso have not announced details of the holidays offered until after the period of availability was already underway. Despite its problems, the Government estimates the

Bocconchini de Poulet We were then treated to the Bocconchini de Poulet with Marsala Sauce. This is a chicken breast filled with Parma ham and mozzarella, coated in a Marsala sauce then topped with more Parma ham, served with a salad and a side of potatoes au gratin*. The dish did look a little daunting when it arrived, but only for someone who had tried 3 dishes prior to this one. It is a generous amount of food, you could say ‘served the Italian way’, and actually, we couldn’t wait to get stuck in. When cut in to, the mozzarella oozed from the middle of the chicken into the Marsala sauce. Each mouthful was then a delight. The marsala sauce is rich and deep and elevated the slight saltiness of the Parma ham to join the chicken in a match made in heaven. The potatoes au gratin are divine, what is not to love, creamy potatoes with garlic topped with cheese that becomes that gorgeous gooey consistency. Whether you want to or not, you can’t help but have another spoonful. *It’s worth noting that all meat dishes are served with a

choice of chips, pasta Bolognese or napolitana, potatoes au gratin, grilled vegetables or rice which is quite a selection to choose from. Our desserts were chosen by chef and owner, Fabrice, with such great recommendations it would have been rude to deny him the chance to shine again.

soaked sponge, passionfruit and cream with an added zing from popping candy. This dessert is as light and creamy as they come, and you’ll need to ask for it as it’s not yet on the menu.

Chocolate Brownie

Fabrice and Nancy are French born, and 20 years ago they decided to open an Italian restaurant named David’s in San Antonio. We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again, David’s is an institution, and long may they continue.

The chocolate brownie is as rich and chocolatey as you can imagine. Served on a slate with not only vanilla ice cream but almond topped whipped cream, this dessert is not for the faint hearted. Large pieces of walnuts are encased in a slightly sticky centre with that brownie crunch on the outside. It’s a chocolate lovers dream.

Strawberry and Passionfruit Our last dessert can best be described as a cross between a tiramisu and a trifle. Layers of creamy strawberry, marsala-

Tourist Guide Santa Eulalia Food & Drink  Los Otros, Vegan & Veg Restaurant, Santa Eulaia There can be little doubting the vegan credentials of Los Otros, as not only do they offer a fine range of Italian food, the owner is an authoritative author of vegan cookbooks too. The setting is magical. Just meters from the water on the marina front of Santa Eulalia, your visit will have the reassuringly relaxing soundtrack of the clinking masts of moored yachts.

 Smoker’s Delight Restaurant, Santa Eulalia Smoker’s Delight can make the rare claim to bringing something truly unique to Ibiza’s world of food. The restaurant smokes all their own food on the premises using 100% natural wood pellets in an offset smoker. The method - Low and Slow. The result – just about as succulent and flavoursome beef, turkey and salmon as you will ever taste. Vegans are well cared for including the smoked organic Tofu, the tapas tasters offer a perfect lite bite, and a full night menu that is, well, smoking. The salads look amazing, but our recommendation has to be the Beef Brisket Merienda. A chunk of smoked beef brisket, horse reddish, pickles, mustard and bread.

 Mariposa Pool Bar & Restaurant, Cala Llonga

View of the Dalt Vila in Ibiza Town’s Historic Heart

The idea of ‘living the dream’ under the Mediterranean sun becomes reality at the Mariposa. Nestled in the hills behind the Cala Llonga village, and with spectacular views out over the bay, the Mariposa team and regulars will give you the warmest of welcomes. Start your day with a bacon and brie toasted sandwich and café con leche, followed by a dip in the pool, and sip on some cocktails from your poolside lounger. Heaven.

Welcome to Ibiza

Entertainment

On behalf of all of us who live and work in Ibiza, most of whom earn our living directly or indirectly from the tourism sector, we welcome you to the Island. The Ibizan has been our island English language newspaper since 1999. We now produce a monthly tourism special edition, which you will hopefully find available in your Hotel reception. The monthly special is a much bigger newspaper entirely focussed on you the tourist, It includes resort guides to all of the major tourist areas, a huge agenda of things to do for the month, and an insight to the Island history and culture. In this, our regular weekly edition, the next 4 pages are provided as a compact guide—with useful maps and information on our supporting advertisers—restaurants, clubs, bars, shops and much more besides. You will also find lots of useful information in the agenda pages, clubbing and food & drink. For more information, and an online version of the monthly special if you cannot find one in your accommodation, go to our website theibizan.com We hope you will have a fantastic time, and will be on the way to becoming one of our many frequent flyer visitors.  Nicholas Gibbs, Editor

 Guarana Nightclub, Santa Eulalia Marina A visit to one of Ibiza’s huge super-clubs may be on your holiday to do list. But seasoned clubber or not, you’ll enjoy a night at Santa Eulalia’s only late night club—a munch more intimate and friendly affair than it’s bigger sisters. Located directly on Santa Eulalia marina waterfront, if you dance til dawn you will also be treated to the spectacular sight of an Ibiza dawn rising over the sea. Sunset is for your mates, sunrise is for your soul-mate.

 Viva Cala Llonga The Cala llonga Hippy Market takes place every Thursday evening from 6pm with an array of locally hand crafted articles such as clothes, jewellery, trinkets, pottery and much more, produced by some of Ibiza's finest artisans all at reasonable prices. Located on the promenade it's a perfect place to wander along under the evening stars while listening to live music, looking for a perfect gift, souvenir or personal treat. In addition to this there's a wide variety of international bars and restaurants for you to enjoy and a safe playground for the little ones. There's ample free parking just a few metres away.

San Antonio Food & Drink  Tapas Restaurant and Lounge Bar One top tip to start with—it is best to book. Tapas is one of the most popular places to eat in San An, and in the height of summer you may have quite a wait to get seated if you haven't booked in advance.

 Mambo No trip to Ibiza is complete without a sunset on the strip, and if you want to do it in the finest style, Mambo has to be the place to go. Their terrace enjoys spectacular views of the sunset, and you’ll be entertained by some of the world’;s top DJs with Mambos nightly pre-party warm up.

 Mar 5 MAR 5 is an elegant venue near the port of San Antonio. On the first floor the restaurant has a wonderful terrace where you can enjoy their Argentinian grill menu. A local legend, it has stood in the same spot and run by the same family since way back when it was by some way the biggest building on the waterfront in what was an unrecognisable San Antonio. With a pedigree of such distinction, you won’t find a better place for a traditional Paella or some fresh caught local fish. But it also offers far more. The La Cantina kitchen is also home to 3 specialist chefs each taking care over their respective Thai, Indian and TexMex division.

Browse their range of jetskis, stand up paddle, seadoos, speedboat trips, and the awesome hoverboard and flyboard sessions, from the comfort of their shop, and then take the activity from any of their four beach concessions—which makes them one of the biggest watersports operators in Ibiza.  Peppers2 Party Bar Dance till dawn? You betcha, and we don’t want any of that ‘I’m too old for all that now’ nonsense either. In Ibiza there is no such thing as too old, and Peppers2 is a fine example of an all night party bar that will see everybody from barely legal to rather regal bopping the night away. See the agenda for special events, but every night you are guaranteed a warm welcome from Chaz and the team. Take a cocktail or two on the terrace, then head inside to show us your moves.

 Donnegans Irish Pub It is hard to know what category to list Donnegans, as they do many things, and do them all very well. Day and night it is a bar with a welcome as warm as the draught Guiness and magners are cold. They show all sports including hurling, and have a great menu of reasonabl;y priced home cooked food from snacks to full meals. But it is perhaps their entertainment that really sets them apart. With a regular line up of live performers with the common denominator of making sure everyone has a great time. Check our agenda and their facebook for events.

“Snuff, Puff, and Party Stuff”, possibly the best and certainly the most accurately descriptive business strap-line we’ve heard in Ibiza. Poppers, seeds, mushroom kits, and more bongs than the collected works of Cheech and Chong. Plus they offer home/hotel delivery—smoking!

With 5 top quality courts (2 clay, 3 artificial grass), a bar, pool, sun-terrace and beautiful garden Viva Tennis is the essential destination on Ibiza to play tennis and relax with friends. Whether you are a complete beginner or regular player their team of international coaches can improve anyone’s game.

Plus, and though it might not be a big one for tourists, it certainly is for us residents—proper pies pasties & sausage rolls. With 5 big screen TVs and 4 satellite streams, whatever your sporting preference, if it’s on, they’ve got it.

San Antonio Bay Food & Drink  Johnny’s Pub, Established 1993 Johnny’s is a Bay institution. Popular with locals and tourists alike, they are open for food to eat in and takeaway from morning through to late—usually very late, and at some point on your holiday, you’ll be glad of that. We locals can’t have their exceptional English breakfast (above) as often as we’d like, but you’re on holiday, so indulge yourself. Just 4,75€ gets you double British sausage and bacon, double egg, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, fried slice, toast and tea or coffee—plus a portion of jam for reasons we’ve never fully understood.

You’ll be happier, she will be happier, just don’t think too much about your accruing credit card bill while you enjoy a game.

If you are already here you can’t take advantage of the superb accommodation—but remember it for next time. You can however enjoy a meal on their rooftop terrace with unrivalled views over the Dalt Vila. Special, very special.

In the heart of San Antonio Bay, Aperture Terrace is something of an Ibizan secret, a hidden gem. Invisible from the street, just a few footsteps upstairs take you to a chic retreat that could be a million miles from the hustle & bustle below. All the beach club charm, without the competing hordes or the annoying travel, Aperture is accessible luxury on your doorstep. Book a bed by day, dip in the pool and delight at the menu, or make it your sunset choice for cocktails where the only crush is the ice in your mojito. Just don’t tell everybody.

New Spaik Mural in Ibiza Town

Women, Public Murals,

Spaik, the Mexican artist who painted the eagle and the snake murals in the De Soto Tunnel in Ibiza Town returned to the island during this year’s Bloop Festival to paint another mural on Carrer de Múrcia. It’s on the wall of the school at the Av. España end of the street. Spaik is a Mexican urban artist whose colorful works are inspired by Latin American folklore. He works mainly in Mexico but has also done murals in other countries such as Belgium, France, England, Colombia and Guatemala and we’re very lucky to have 3 of his works in Ibiza. In his paintings Spaik uses topics related to local traditions and makes mythical references of traditional stories. More info about the Bloop Festival at: http://www.bloop-festival.com

of the spray can is a rare talent that takes his work to a point some way past photo realistic into some augmented and enhanced alternative dimension. For his mural, of a 92 year old native Formenteran woman Catalina Juan Juan*, his composition and the conveyance of personality are exemplary as ever. The best praise I can give Jerom is that he is so good you expect this standard from him. *Here is a nice little update; one of the artists, Aída Miró, has been in touch to tell us that Catalina is actually her grandmother. Lovely stuff. Jerom’s work, examples below, often comes with a real social conscience, and yet he can also convey so-damnsexy in a way that it won’t make you question your own.

Twoflü Aída Miró Aída Miró is a name new to me, so I cannot say if there is any family connection to the celebrated Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramicist, Joan Miró, though I imagine rarely a day goes by without somebody asking Aída the question – so I won’t, as she must get fed up with it and it surely doesn’t really matter beyond anecdotal reference. Again Aida’s mural is completed with spray can witchcraft, though some beautiful and intricate studies of geishas on her facebook page indicates that aerosols are not her only medium.

Twoflü, (also going by 2flu and 2-flu) is the artist behind the 3rd mural of the child. 2flu also painted the concentric circle backgrounds on all three murals. Have you spotted it yet? At first glance the gold, purple, white and black rings appear to be a decorative pattern, but look closer and you will see it is actually text. You can make out the Ibiza ring quite clearly, but the rest may need an up close and personal visit, or at least better eyes than mine. I’m not sure if the rest has any textual meaning, or is simply using calligraphy as a decorative medium. Either way it is very effective. Connect with 2flu on instagram at instagram.com/twoflu

Thank You Congratulations to Aída Miró, Jerom and 2-flu, superb work. Thank you for your contribution to Island life. Late addition—this great photo of Jerom with Catalina.

We also found these work-in-progress images of Aida and Jerom on her facebook page – interesting to see the magic at the outset/drafting stage. Connect with Aida on facebook here facebook.com/ aidamiroart

Jet2 vs Mambo All Star Charity Football Match Denis Irwin’s Soap Stars vs Campo’s Mambo Blancos  San Antonio Football Stadium, Friday 28th September 6.30pm No less than 5 full international players from La Liga and The Premiership will be joined by a whole host of Soap Stars for a special charity football match on Friday 28th of September. Entrance is 5€ for adults with children free, but all money raised goes to Ibiza’s charity for disabled children, Apneef.

Jet2 For Jet2, Manchester United and Ireland defender Denis Irwin has the interesting challenge of leading out a pan-channelsoap team with Corrie and Hollyoaks in force and an odd Eastender giving some Southern representation. Irwin will be applying all the skills and experience of a career in which he won 19 major trophies and had Alex Ferguson describe him as ‘pound for pound the best signing I ever made’. In his acting stable he has Andy Whyment, Coronation Street’s ‘Kirky’ along with Dean Fagan who plays ‘Luke Britton’, Alan Halsall, who plays ‘Tyrone Dobbs’ and Sam Aston, known by millions thrice weekly as ‘Chesney Brown’. Among the Hollyoaks half dozen there is Anthony Quinlan, ‘Gilly’ in Hollyoaks and also ‘Pete Barton’ in Emmerdale, plus Ashley Taylor Dawson, who is ‘Darren Osborne’ in Hollyoaks

If you do nothing else this month, make sure you visit Cala LLonga on Sunday 23rd September. That's the day that over 40 different bands will be playing - for free- on three stages on the beach from 12 mid-day 'til 12 midnight, raising money for the Playing For Change charity and the local children’s charity ASPANOB. In addition to the music there'll be a variety of street food on sale, drinks, raffles and other entertainments for all ages.

So, what's it all about? Playing For Change is a worldwide charity that aims to help children in third world countries by providing them with musical instruments and lessons in the hope that they will have the skills to be able to improve their lives, and those of their families, through music. ASPANOB (La Asociacion de Padres de Ninos con Cancer de Baleares), was formed in 1987 to help the islands children from birth to 18 years, and their families, who are unfortunate enough to suffer from, or be affected by, cancer. Not only will you have an unforgettable afternoon, but in addition you'll be helping children both locally and worldwide. Children are the future!  Photo Credit—by Rosie Randisi, 2017 Playing For Change Day Ibiza

and also a 2013 ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ contestant.

Mambo On paper at least, the opposing team Mambo look a daunting prospect for Irwin’s 11. No surprise to find a player from Mambo boss Javier’s beloved Blancos in the line up, with European Champion’s League winning Iván Campo. British fans may best remember Campo for his 40 yard wonder goal for Bolton v Spurs on the opening game of the season 2006. Campo is one of two Ipswich Town players in the Mambo team, joined by Finidi George who made a name for himself with Ajax, another Champion’s league winner, and Nigeria. George played for Real Betis and Mallorca in Spain. Though the Ipswich pedigree alone is likely to be enough to beat any team of actors, Mambo have strength in depth if they need it. Vicente Engonga was one of the RCD Mallorca team that beat Barcelona in the 98 Supercup final. He has also has spells with Valencia and Real Valladolid. Also from that same era Mallorca under Héctor Cúper comes Argentinian Gabriel Amato who went on to play for Glasgow Rangers. All in all we can’t help thinking that Denis will be glad of his goalkeeper’s pedigree with Nick Culkin, Manchester United’s number 2 to Peter Schmeichel, between the sticks.

Pop Art Exhibition  San Antonio, by Claire B The Pop exhibition is still on in San Antonio until September 28. It’s housed in 2 locations: in the Far de Ses Coves Blanques and in La Sala Walter Benjamin de Sa Punta des Molí. Across the 2 galleries there are 46 pop art works from international and Spanish artists, including Andy Warhol, Jim Dine, Richard Hamilton, Robert Indiana, Kawashima, David Lachapelle, Roy Lichtenstein, Vanessa Beecroft, Herb Ritts, Peter Philips, James Rosenquist and Tom Weselman, and also Spanish artists Eduardo Úrculo, Rafael Armengol, Lluís Güell, Salvador Dalí and Óscar Tusquets. Free. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 6pm-9.30pm.

ARIES – The Magician

A good week to get your point across in ways that make others sit up and listen. If you're in Marketing or Sales you score brownie points for your flair, presentation and original ideas. Being a skilful negotiator brings you financial rewards and in romantic situations you're able to make the right impression, even if you don't really mean it!

TAURUS – Death/Transformation

Changes are inevitable this week as some doors close in certain areas of your life. This does mean however, that new doors will open, offering a different set of opportunities; don’t think negatively about your new circumstances. We don’t realise until after events unfold that we are actually better off and one particular situation is best left behind anyway.

GEMINI – Ten of Wands

A week where you feel you're running around in circles. If you're over doing it then for goodness sake delegate! Taking care of number one should be top of your list. Stressing out will get you, or important projects nowhere; if you stop to smell the roses, you'll calm down enough to see the exit strategy over an important dilemma.

CANCER – The Moon (reversed)

It’s easy to remain pessimistic and fret over how to handle situations where you feel trapped; however, if you get a grip and see situations as they really are, you’ll be able to plan your escape route. We co-create our situations so there’s no point blaming others for our misfortune. Wait until any storm has passed before taking action.

LEO – Knight of Swords (reversed)

This Knight represents clashes of personality or differences of opinion. You might have to bite your tongue on more than one occasion and if pushed, will not suffer fools gladly. If you have doubts about another’s intentions you may well be right; trust your intuition. Better to cut your losses rather than risk creating problems for yourself in the future.

VIRGO – Three of Cups

You are here to be happy and this card reminds you of that fact! The best way to ensure this happens is to spend more time with those who bring you joy. If you've not caught up with friends or family lately; now's the time to do that. Golden opportunities, abundant times socially, financially and career wise through networking opportunities.

LIBRA – Knight of Pentacles

If someone offers you advice this week, make sure that they are not acting from self-interest. You may freely share ideas that help others, but make sure they don’t make off with them. Financial outlays need more research before your commitment. This is not to say that they won’t be profitable; however, make sure the investment is right for you.

SCORPIO – Temperance

Finally you’ll be given recognition and praise for what you have been diligently working on recently. Introduce a more harmonious and balanced routine into your day to day life; as it’s true that what you project on to others is a reflection of your own inner world. If any discordant situations arise, handle them right and you will be alright!

SAGITTARIUS – Five of Swords

As much as it is tempting to put yourself first, you would be wise to listen to what others have in mind this week. You won’t make friends by forcing a point or riding roughshod over others opinions. However, it may be difficult to keep your temper if you discover any intrigue or deception going on behind your back.

CAPRICORN – Ten of Swords (reversed)

If you’ve not been on top form recently, this cycle is coming to an end. You’ll be more able to cope this week than you have for some time. New and positive situations are on their way so you’ll have plenty of reasons to be happy. If you’ve suffered emotionally, don’t be afraid to seek advice from a trusted source.

AQUARIUS – Queen of Cups

This card highlights the need to handle an emotional situation delicately, with kindness and compassion. Be more giving of your time and energy and listen rather than offer more advice. If you are the one who feels they are not being heard, take steps to create the appropriate boundaries. Get your point across in a gentle but firm way.

PISCES – King of Pentacles (reversed)

You have to deal with silly situations this week. All people seem to be interested in is money or precisely, your money. Don’t let others persuade you to part with yours and be careful who you trust. You could also be frustrated with a situation that is not being handled intelligently and are left incredulous at the laziness of others.

 Rev. Dr Peter Pimentel Do we have guardian angels? I get this question from time to time. Increasingly there is an interest in angels and the supernatural. The answer to the question is very simple because Jesus himself had something profound to say about this. Jesus said: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven.” (Matthew 18:10 -11, NIV). By “little ones” Jesus is not referring to children only. It is quite clear from the context that Jesus calls his followers the “little ones”. See, for example, Matthew 10: 42 (in

Friday 26

context verses 34-42): “If anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones who is my disciple, truly I tell you, that person will certainly not lose their reward.” (And in context verses 12-14). Another example. Jesus says: “If anyone causes one of these little ones – those who believe in me – to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” (Matthew 18:6, NIV). In context, the saying is about being a follower of Jesus. The disciples are

“little ones” because followers of Jesus must change and become like little children (Mathew 18:1 -5). To go back to our original verse. The disciples of Jesus (the little ones) have “their angels in heaven”. We have representatives in heaven! Spiritual doppelgangers? As little ones we have angelic counterparts. Jesus says that these angels “always see the face of my Father in heaven”. Our angels are in the closest possible proximity to God. They are face to face with God. In Jewish writings contemporary with Jesus, such as the Dead Sea

Scrolls, these angels are known, in Hebrew, as malakhim parnim, “angels of the face”. They are the highest order of angels. Our personal angels are of the highest order! They have the most intimate proximity with God! As angels of the face they reflect to us the spiritual light of God. In the Jewish high priestly blessing, the mystical divine light shines from the face of God: “The Eternal One bless you and keep you. The Eternal One cause his face to shine upon you and be kind to you. The Eternal One lift up his face upon you and give you peace.” (Numbers 6:24).

Shebizan  Amanda O’Riordan Welcome to another instalment of Amanda Zips It Up. This week has all been about London Fashion Week, showcasing everything for S/S ’19.

 Read Amanda’s fashion blog http:// amandazipsitup.com/

A Star Is Born This was the show I had come to see. A STAR IS BORN – not the movie, the fashion label. All 10 catwalk minutes were sheer excitement, colour and-in-your face sequins and sparkles. Incredible eveningwear to make everyone present stand still in awe. The creators of this exclusive brand Sheetal and Suchi were both born in India, home to lavish and opulent design, surrounded by the beauty of their nation’s culture, architecture, history and elegance. They were raised in Mumbai, which cultivated their vast knowledge of textiles and embroidery, under the watchful eye of their mother and mentor, who was well known in India for embellishing intricate work on silk fabrics for Oscar De La Renta and many other prestigious brands. As children, Sheetal and Suchi were mesmerised by the handwork, colour and cutting produced in their workshops. They always knew they wanted to be part of this intensely visual medium. Suchi moved to the UK, where she absorbed the modern ethos of “design restraint” plus the closely guarded secrets of draping, cutting and embellishing fabric to create clean, elegant and timeless silhouettes for women who understand fashion and get what

Page 15

they want. Between the equally opulent but aesthetically opposite worlds of India and the UK, their style was born.

Alexa Chung at LFW18 She’s one of my and the UK’s foremost style icons. I didn’t get to catch the AC show at London Fashion Week, but my good friend Katie did, and reported back. Alexa Chung featured ‘airport style’ for her first LFW show as a designer. Breaking with the public perception of what Alexa Chung is “has been a challenge”, she comments. But that doesn’t mean necessarily breaking with the perception of what Alexa Chung wears. Chung’s ability to identify products that will sell – remember THAT M&S collection - plus Superga, AG Jeans – have all been commercial successes. Pardon the pun, but if those previous collaborations were “dress rehearsals”, then this was the opening night. Chung hasn’t tried to erase what came before - like the black PVC coat, seen in the previous M&S collaboration and in this latest collection too - but she’s fine-tuned her offering. I could imagine Alexa herself wearing these clothes - her ability to influence trends is what gave Chung fashion credibility in the first place. Against a wood panelled maze of airport corridors, there were slim fitting jumpsuits, pyjamas for outdoor wear (in case there was any doubt that Alexa’s women were turning left once on the plane), stretch-knit sundresses worn with jelly shoes and brown suede coats. A trip to Margate trawling vintage shops for inspiration generated styles that dipped between decades- a 1930s mustard silk evening dress one moment, a 1990s black silk slip dress and multiple references to the 1970s, like a safari suit inspired by a found reference of Bianca Jagger in her PJs. This new addition to the London Fashion Week schedule is a natural one, especially given that there is a Britishness that underlies all of Alexa’s designs. The appearance of so many coats in a spring summer collection- many featuring hoods - might seem odd to some, but not to anyone familiar with (the usually non-existent) British summertime. The ‘destination’ scarf print looks, at first glance, to be printed with little Eiffel towers, a nod to her previous presentations held in Paris - but actually, it nods to Brighton Pier and Bognor Regis – hurrah! It seems Alexa is glad to be home.

Diversity Plus

clothes, pumping tunes and iconic locations. It was also dominated by diversity, including disabled and plus–sized models. From wheelchairs to size 20, everyone looked beautiful and confident. It was heart-warming to see. I recently picked up last month’s issue of Cosmo, featuring cover star and plus-size model Tess Holliday. I have retained it as keepsake, to remember the year when the fashion industry got “real”. Yes, there was a backlash on social media, hailing this as a seriously unhealthy message. I guess I agree with that to an extent too. But, arguably, more unhealthy are the size zero models who still dominate the majority of catwalks. “Average” women like me are still in the catwalk minority. For years, the industry has come under fire for its lack of representation of the full spectrum of race, size and age — and substantive improvements are only just starting to be seen in 2018. Nevertheless, I still feel that someone like me - of average height and build, size 10 on a good day, 12 on a bad day and 5 foot 6 if I stand up straight - are not really represented or “fashionable”. I am not skinny but I’m not obese. I’m average. Yet it feels as though you have to be at either end of the spectrum to get catwalk representation. The fashion brands need to represent us ‘in the middle’ as well. Because we are the majority, and therefore have the most disposable income to spend on the latest threads. As a fashion lover, I adore those elite catwalks, with the likes of Kendal Jenner or Bella Hadid. But as an artistic event, rather than a representation of real life. Fashion brands have to consider the effect that their model castings can have on women. A recent report shows that 32.5 per cent of model castings went to women of colour in September’s fashion month — a commendable 2.3 per cent increase from the season before. But only 0.2 per cent were aged 50 or above and just 0.4 per cent were plus-size — in fashion talk, that is a UK size 12 or above. On Instagram there are the plus-size bloggers, such as Callie Thorpe, 30, with 201,000 followers. I admire these inspirational, curvy women who fly the flag for the stylish, larger lady. Also, there are the “mum bloggers”, showing motherhood in all its honesty. One example is dresslikeamum (aka Zoe de Pass, 37) who uses her platform to prove to her 119,000 followers that mums needn’t lose their fashion identity. But, that’s on Instagram – not the pages of Vogue or the catwalks of Milan. There is a lack of interest for women like me in fashion, and that is a little sad. The sooner brands recognise the appetite for “average”, the better.

My experience of London Fashion Week 2018 wasn’t just dominated by the amazing
