Susan is a contemporary landscape painter, based in the North Yorkshire Dales. She completed a Foundation course in Art & Design, at York College of Art in 1987, and a BA (Hons) Fine Art in Manchester, 1988-91. Shortlisted for the Whitworth Young Contemporaries as a student, she experimented with conceptual art before returning to full time painting on returning to North Yorkshire. Significant solo exhibitions including "On the Horizon, Out of Reach" at The Bowes Museum, "If I have left, I Remain in the Country" The National Trust's Nunnington Hall and "Maybe You Have Been Here" at Brantwood, the home of John Ruskin in Coniston, The Lake District. Susan exhibited in the Lynn Painter-Stainer 2013 Prize Exhibition in the Mall Galleries, London and has shown paintings in many northern galleries and museums. Artist's Statement "I need isolation and seclusion to work and walking in the wild northern landscape with its changing light constantly inspires my work. Trees and skies, particularly at night time and last light are subjects I return to. Walking outdoors is one of the last things that remain free and it helps me to think and generate ideas for new works. I'm often asked "how long does it take to finish a painting?" I tend to work on several at once moving between paintings to sustain my interest and keep a fresh eye. It takes me months, sometimes years, to get piece of work to the point where I can look at it with some detachment and appreciate it. A lot of my work has been reworked entirely but I like the history of the board underneath and I work best like this. When I do have a painting I am pleased with, it feels as if someone else has created it and I can see it as if it were another artist's work. Then I know it is complete. The right title is important to a piece and many have their origins in poetry which helps me to clarify what I am trying to say with the painting. Artists are observers and painting for me is a pure expression of a mood, of a time and place and of memory. Landscape is a constantly challenging subject, I have been painting for 27 years now and I still feel as excited to pick up a brush and start work on a picture as I did when I was a child.
