What we do

At Nicholas Anthony, we design kitchens, bathrooms, and interiors that contrive to celebrate individual style and lifestyle, fusing a multiplicity of design influences alongside master craftsmanship, state-of-the-art technology, and a clear mandate to serve both form and function. It all culminates in one ultimate objective – to elevate daily experiences. A kitchen is at the heart of the home – a hub of activity and purpose. It’s the place that can set you up for the day and support daily rituals. These are the moments that count the most, and so, our team of designers work with you to make sure the environment you exist in best serves the life you want to live.

Our story

Nicholas Anthony founder, Tony Nicholas Sr. was a forward for Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge in the 1950s. Nicholas turned professional with First Division champions Chelsea in May 1955. He was capped by England at youth level: against a Denmark youth XI in October 1955, he scored three times in a 9–2 victory and, according to The Times’ correspondent, “had a rare eye for the target and a left foot of great power”.

While still playing football, he trained as a cabinet-maker and opened a DIY shop in Chelmsford. This developed into a successful interior design business which he passed on to sons Tony, pictured right, and Kevin.

Personalised experiences

At Nicholas Anthony your design journey begins when our skilled and intuitive team seeks not simply to understand your aesthetic preferences, but your values and your lifestyle aspirations.

Your home is where your life is, and we work with you, not to create a collection of things, but an environment that speaks your language.

06 11

Dare to dream

Envisaging an environment that no one else could create –that takes courage and a little bit of daring.

In addition to the experience we have had with our clients around the world since we began in 1963, we know from experience the frisson of excitement as well as the nervousness that can go with embarking on a lifestyle changing design journey.

A balancing act between technical expertise and truly creative inspiration, it is tantalising and daunting all at once, and we are here to make it a seamless process from start to finish.

Kitchens

Bespoke kitchens

We pride ourselves on our ability to push the boundaries of luxury kitchen design. That has led to our award-winning eponymous signature collection of styles. We also combine our creative and technical understanding with the most up-to-date industry knowledge, so that we can recommend and pair design and appliances and create the perfect kitchen space that works for you and your vision for your home.

15

A home representing spiritual soulfulness and beauty

Nestled into the verdant green of the South Downs National Park, this sculptural property was designed to create a tangible sense of wellbeing and a palpable synergy with nature.

Case study one
17

Personality and perfect harmony

The ineffable soulfulness of this home is testament to the owners’ personal passions and the designer’s skill at interpreting them before creating a physical environment that nurtures them as well. Taking the simple inspiration of a perfectly executed yoga move, the house is almost a living, breathing Barbara Hepworth sculpture – all organic forms, natural light and seamless, flowing energy.

19

A home without boundaries

Glamour and scale are the two things that strike you upon entering this immaculate culinary space. On the outskirts of historic Colchester, surrounded by vast swathes of garden and mature trees , this contemporary kitchen would be just as at home in a five-star hotel as it is in the domestic bliss of South East England.

INTERIORS SINCE 1963

Fit for a five-star hotel

Taking its cue from the rest of the house, this is a space that’s made to be experienced – both by the residents going about their daily rituals and by illustrious guests. The kitchen is where, at any given moment, you could throw the party of the ages or simply enjoy breakfast with the family with equal ease.

To make best use of the space, designers have configured it into clearly defined zones that flow from one to the next. There’s a cooking area, a utility space (separate from the home’s utility room), two immense islands (one in the shape of an L), a lounge area and a dining room, all with their own sense of intimacy and conviviality.

23

Inspired by Mondrian: Huf Haus meets Bauhaus

Surrounded by bucolic vistas and tranquil scenery, this angular Huf Haus is strikingly juxtaposed with its undulating surroundings, and yet its geometric forms frame the views as if their intention was always to celebrate the natural world.

Case study three
28 25

Art imitating life

Turning a prefabricated formula into a one of a kind architectural experience, the interiors of this property were inspired by Piet Mondrian and his distinctive abstract ‘Wall Works’. The segmented windows framing picturesque views of grazing cattle draw the perfect parallel with Mondrian’s belief that art reflects the underlying spirituality of nature, and his interest in simplifying the natural world to the most basic elements in his paintings.

Of particular note is a vibrant Chagall, an impressive anthropomorphic bronze bird, and a bespoke partition wall where an open shelf enables you to see the resident sculpture from both sides.

27

The home you deserve

When the children have grown up and fled the nest, or perhaps it’s more likely they have boomeranged for a little while; when careers are established and you have earned your dues, there comes a time where you can create the home that you have always wanted without compromise. Such was the case for the owners of Woodland House, deep in the Suffolk countryside, close to the River Stour in Middleton, prompting the extension and refurbishment of a lifetime.

Case study four
29

This family home clearly holds a lot of happy memories, but when the owners of the house came to our designers for support with a kitchen extension, what was once made to accommodate the patter of tiny feet now had the opportunity to be a sophisticated space for adults to enjoy.

The owners had a vision for preserving the raw, industrial features of the architecture, in a project that turned an upstairs kitchen into a double-height space that takes full advantage of the arboreous landscapes outside.

31

Experience and innovation

At Nicholas Anthony, our design team has an international reputation for excellence that spans 60 years and counting. Working with leading brands, we combine technology, a reverence for natural materials and the latest in wellness trends with design expertise, all whilst honouring and reflecting your individual style and values.

Bathrooms

Luxury wellness at home

A running theme in the most harmonious and well-designed homes, is a reverence for the elements. 3,000 years of wellness rituals link them to our health and wellbeing – grounding us in the earth, cleansing us with water, revitalising us with the air and invigorating us with fire. Using the elements as conduits for nature’s healing power, those core elements of wellness still underpin spa culture today. It is an experience that we have the power to bring into our homes, forging stone and wood alongside home saunas and the creative use of light and space

33

Metamorphosis: A bathroom for the Modern age

From the northernmost tip of Tuscany to a contemporary London home, this bathroom is defined by the cool, sculptural presence of Carrara marble, which adorns the walls and frames features with a gravitas born of the ages.

Case study five
35

Tale as old as time

Carrara marble brings with it an understated but unmistakable brand of luxury. Quietly occupying its space, it offers neither competition or obeisance to surrounding items and features. It is as though it has an engrained confidence, born of being hewn over the millennia.

The decidedly contemporary stone has a history as old as time. Hailing from the Italian province of Massa-Carrara, it quietly morphed under pressure, from calcite-rich shells to lime sediment and into the pristine stone we know and love today.

37

Personal space

In some homes, walk-in wardrobes are shared by partners. In others, each master of the house has their own space reflecting their own personal style. However you choose to use your space, it’s individual and the design should reflect that more than anywhere else in the home. From white starlet-style dressing rooms to seductive Bond-inspired dens, from smoked glass doors to upholstered finishes, walk-in wardrobes can be the ultimate expression of undiluted personal style.

Wardrobes

Store and display

As a space designed to help you store and style your personal belongings, there’s a synchronicity between fashion and functionality that has to be honoured in a walk-in wardrobe. With some items on display and others neatly hidden away, easy access and a sense of flow should take you on a seamless journey at the start and end of the day. Dedicated spaces for shoes, bags, jewellery, trousers, skirts, dresses and ties all dictate the shape and organisation of the room, all making planning and smart design imperative.

39

Intentional wellbeing

Light has a powerful impact on our mood, emotions and energy, and lighting design allows us to influence the way we choose to feel in our own space. From feeling energised in our home office to soothing the soul through a warm, ambient glow, there’s more to lighting than meets the eye.

Lighting

Capturing the elements

Light influences our circadian rhythm, and the most elemental way in which that happens is with the ebb and flow of natural daylight. There’s a purity to natural light that is impossible to mimic. At Nicholas Anthony we are at the forefront of innovation and harness the power of the sun to achieve optimal experiences.

41

The personal touch: Our furniture

Furniture is about more than placing a chair in a helpful location or having a functional dining table. It can be an artistic expression of your personality as well as part of the details that bring deep satisfaction to your day. The features in our home elevate the experiences we have to those that are deeply personal as well as creatively inspired.

Furniture

Framing the future

When we work with you to create your home environment, we don’t just choose items to match your specifications, we help you to fully envision the memories you will be making in those spaces. From the handcrafted furniture of our Signature Collection, to carefully selected items from one of our talented suppliers, we work with you to create the spaces where you want to see your future.

43
Utility and boot rooms

Form and function: Utility and boot rooms

As kitchens get smarter and the popularity for open plan living continues to grow, the utility room takes on an ever-greater significance as the engine room of the house. Its purpose straddles pragmatism and the very purpose of the home. Getting that balance right is about intelligent use of space, an integral understanding of your lifestyle, knowledge of the best technologies, and a flair for design and craftsmanship.

Alongside the utility room, boot rooms are the domain of luxury country living. Sitting separately from utility rooms and pantries, they allow for evermore purposeful detail from dog showers to boot racks, sinks to storage benches. They are the bridge between indoor and outdoor life, eminently practical and creating elegant harmony between your different domains.

45

Vintage style: Wine rooms

Wine rooms, wine cellars, wine fridges and more – from spiral cellars to subterranean display cases, wine rooms are the integral luxury feature of a five-star home. Modern technology and engineering means that whether you’re located in a chic city apartment or a vast country estate, the options abound when it comes to installing your wine room. The domain of the stylish, the well informed and the passionate, you can store your favourite bottles at the perfect temperature and showcase prize possessions with flair and style.

47

Home deli: Chic pantries

Food might be a necessity, but it’s also a great joy, and in much the same way a pantry doesn’t just have to be about function – it can be about style and sensory experiences. Incorporate artfully placed hooks for cured meats, custom made open shelving for showcasing spices, overhead racks for home drying herbs, engraved silver tins for teas and coffees, and built-in wine fridges with glass fronts.

A pantry has to make it easy to find and access your ingredients; it has to store them at the right temperature and the space has to be maximised for optimum use. Design is an intrinsic part of that functionality of your pantry, adding enjoyment and creativity to each meal and moment.

Media units

Showcase pieces: Media units

If life’s a cabaret, entertainment should have all the makings of a piece of theatre. Modern technology is an immaculate and impressive thing, and when we feature it in our homes – from televisions to sound systems – we want to maximise its benefits and sleek beauty, and place it with intent.

For some, we want technology to take centre stage in a room – the piece de resistance in a home cinema. For others, with multifunctional spaces, we want it to blend in one moment and stand proud on command.

Through smart design, custom features, feature walls and seamless storage, modern media units allow us to make the most of technology and its role as part of our lifestyle.

Home studies

Professional inspiration: Home studies

The digital revolution means more of us work from home more of the time, requiring dedicated spaces to garner professional inspiration. This ability to create a working world of our own is an opportunity to envisage an environment that enhances our productivity and creates a sense of balance and wellbeing within our work day.

Chic furnishings combined with carefully selected colours, optimal lighting design and ergonomic features allow us to take control of the space in which we spend so much time, improving the way we work and enhancing the pleasure we get from each day.

53

Bringing British design to the world

Nicholas Anthony is a British company embodying the best of UK design. Clients come to us from around the world because they know that we represent the quality and design ethos of the UK. However, clients also know that we are a brand of international experience and credentials – employing the best of the best, whether it’s German engineering or natural Italian stone.

International projects

Designing for a global community on projects around the world involves so many different facets. It’s about international culture, a connected world, heritage, and bringing all of that together alongside the personal characteristics and style of the homeowner.

When it comes to the look and feel of the property, respecting the history and heritage of a location is imperative to creating a lifestyle and energy that honours the reason you wanted a home there in the first place.

55

In addition to working with private homeowners, our design team collaborates with contractors to apply their award-winning expertise at scale. Ensuring that commercial projects feature seamless style that enhances spaces and further enables prospective homeowners to envisage the memories they will make in the space, we design and install kitchens and bathrooms on projects of all sizes.
