STOP The Badger Cull The presenter of the BBC’s Autumnwatch said it was “both sad and shameful” that the cull of around 5,000 badgers in West Somerset and West Gloucestershire is going ahead. Farmers insist the cull will stop the animals spreading the cattle disease bovine tuberculosis (bTB). Trained marksmen, often the farmers themselves, will shoot up to 80 badgers a night. But Mr Packham said movement of cattle is spreading the disease and killing badgers will just spread bTB further as it forces the wildlife to move around more. “It is both sad and shameful that when night falls and the setts of southern England stir their gentle folk will be needlessly slaughtered. That in spite of science and public will the wrath of ignorance will further bloody and bleed our countryside of its riches of life. That brutalist thugs, liars and frauds will destroy our wildlife and dishonour our nations reputation as conservationists and animal lovers,” he said.

5,500 badgers are expected to be killed in the two cull zones over the six week cull. Adrian Coward, Chairman of the Somerset Badger Group, said that the cull will cost over £5 million over its four year trial period and fail to stop the spread of bTB. “This is not a mini trial, this is mass slaughter,” he said. Protest groups were also out on “wounded badger patrols” in Gloucestershire to show their concern for wildlife. They fear that the method of “free shooting” badgers at night with high velocity rifles could lead to injury rates of up to 30 per cent. More extreme animal rights activists are threatening to disrupt the cull by being present at setts where shooting is going on so that marksmen cannot continue for “health and safety reasons”. Owen Paterson, the Environment Secretary, said the cull must be part of limiting the spread of bovine TB, that kills around 30,000 cattle and costs the taxpayer £100m every year. The RSPCA say “This cull is a national disgrace and it could soon be coming to an area near you. The RSPCA will fight this mindless slaughter every step of the way, but we need your help...” Please register your support at: www.rspca.org.uk/getinvolved/campaigns/wildlife/stop-thecull
