RESPIRATORY TRACT + IMMUNE SYSTEM

RESPIRATORY TRACT + IMMUNE SYSTEM If a horse is coughing, this usually means that the respiratory tract is irritated or diseased. There may be various reasons for this. Bacteria or viruses may attack the mucous membranes, for example. In addition, external factors such as dusty litter or similar factors may exacerbate coughing. If the horse is weak and lacklustre, it is recommended to measure its temperature and to consult a veterinarian. To calm the respiratory tract, we recommend the addition of herbal products and oils to the feed. In the same way, the immune system can be strengthened by adding certain herbs. However, the cause of the cough should also be investigated.

DID YOU KNOW  ?! Like iron, zinc also plays a major role in the working of the immune system. Zinc may on the one hand impede the multiplication of viruses and bacteria, while on the other hand it stabilises the body cell walls to prevent viruses from penetrating them. We love our horses and do like to reward them with a tasty treat from time to time. A healthy, tasty treat in addition to the feed is also permitted. If there is no carrot or apple on hand, try one of our new treats, which can be comfortably carried in a pocket. When treats are used as positive reinforcement during training, the horse learns without experiencing unpleasant stimuli and willingly learns new tricks. As you know, our horses always deserve it, don’t they?

DID YOU KNOW?! People often praise their horses by patting their necks. Many horses have become used to this, but they actually don‘t really enjoy this tapping motion. It does not constitute a natural motivation for them. So why not give their neck a good rub instead of a pat or try a food treat instead?

TOP SHINE

RP1

SUSPENAT

Stiefel Top Shine has totally convinced me. For me as an ambitious horse owner it is the ideal product for the daily care of my horse especially for competitions. Main and tail can be easily combed and also get a nice shine. Top Shine also repels dirt and dust which simplifies grooming tremendous.

The RP1 insect repellent not only smells very nice but is also very effective. The spray can be equably applied. Also the small bottle fits perfectly into the saddle bag for the use during trail rides. So even on long rides my horse and I are very well protected.

Due to her age my 21-years old Holsteiner mare is struggling with swollen legs and wind puff, although she is kept in an open walking stable. Since I treat my mare with Stiefel Suspenat, there are not only no swollen legs anymore, even her wind puffs has minimized by their size and they are much softer than before.

HERBS

DIATOMITE

Claire has a sensitive stomach and had often been treated because of colics. I can help her through bad times effectively by feeding her Stiefel Gastrophyt Herb mixture and she also likes to eat it a lot.

My small thoroughbred gelding Nasi Max, which I own for 17 years now, is 29 years today. Since a couple of years he has got some problems with his lungs. By feeding the Stiefel Herbs liquorice root, thyme and ribwort I can help him with this problem. I usually mix the herbs into his mash or make a tea out of it.

I bought my 5-year old Islandic mare Hátign in march this year. Since then I have started to build her up. However the time of coat change seems to be difficult to her and she is very itchy. Since I feed the Stiefel Diatomite I got it under control. I am absolutely impressed by this product and will keep feeding it because I can see how good Hátign feels with it.

Horses are elegant creatures. We like to watch them when they gallop across the meadow, full of strength and energy. Originally the horse‘s movement system equipped it to move slowly along for approximately 18 hours a day, looking for food with its head near the ground. When there is a need to escape, it is also able to put a high strain on its muscles and tendons immediately. To support the joints, cartilage, tendons and muscles, it is therefore important to provide our horses with sufficient opportunities to keep moving. It is only by providing the necessary nutrients and by constant movement that they can form sufficient joint fluid to supply the cartilage with minerals. Under heavy strain or in old age, the body no longer manages to transport sufficient nutrients to the joints. In this case, the body must be provided with a targeted food supplement.

SUMMER ECZEMA

SUMMER ECZEMA: MORE SUCCESS WITH TRIPLE TREATMENT The skin is the horse‘s largest organ. Our horses often suffer from skin irritations such as summer eczema. The horses are tormented by itchy skin and summer eczema should thus be treated as quickly and comprehensively as possible. This not only includes insect protection and skin care, but also a controlled diet for horses suffering from eczema.

COMPREHENSIVE PROTECTION. This is a decisive factor when treating summer eczema, which is an allergic reaction to insect bites: confining horses to the stable when ploughing fields, providing blankets with insect protection and effective insect repellents. The RP1 active substance Icaridin reversibly binds with the insects‘ smell detectors, thus acting as a reliable deterrent, it is very skin-friendly. An effective insect repellent does not need to have a „stinky“ component, which is why RP1 products have an almost neutral smell. Correct application ensures their optimal effect: Insect repellents must be applied all over the

14

body surface. A particularly effective method is the application of a spray and gel combination: The RP1 spray covers large body regions with a mist. RP1 gel is used for body parts that are either difficult to reach with the spray or that would required too much consumption: ears, the area around the eyes and especially the stomach. When applied with a sponge, the active substance will be applied in high concentrations exactly where it is needed most. Spray + gel = optimal protection with minimal consumption.

GENTLE SKIN CARE. Dry, cracked skin constitute a gap in the horse‘s defences. Stiefel Eczema Protect is a gentle care lotion that restores moisture to the skin. The lotion becomes more effective when massaged deep into the skin. Protective and revitalising active substances can ensure rapid regeneration of the skin and promote wound healing and the formation of new tissue.

e

CORRECT FEEDING. Feed that is too energy-rich may place a strain on the large intestine and negatively affect metabolic processes. A possible consequence: a lack of vitamins and zinc in the skin, which favours the symptoms of summer eczema. In the same way, the skin is much stressed during the period when the horse changes its coat, this requires a lot of zinc and vitamin B, thus weakening the skin. Unfortunately the coat change season is directly followed by the blackfly season. This means that the skin of more sensitive horses would often not stand a chance without some assistance. Such a deficiency adversely affects the structure of the skin - the cells lose their elasticity and moisture, while the production of new cells slows down. However, when trace elements and vitamins that are important for healthy skin are supplemented, the reserves are topped up and the skin is strengthened from the inside.

Stiefel Diatomite is rich in zinc and vitamin B and is fed to the horse to balance out deficiencies. It also ensures a good water balance in the cells and promotes cell metabolism. Inflammatory products are more rapidly removed and the skin is „cleansed“. Another rich source of vitamin B is Stiefel 100 % pure Brewer‘s Yeast. In addition, Stiefel Black Cumin Oil can reduce allergic reactions and stabilise skin functions.

PREVENTATIVE TREATMENT. The problem of summer eczema should be treated preventatively and comprehensively. In sensitive horses, it makes sense to supplement the supply of minerals during the coat change, so that the skin structure is not weakened and does not become a target point for insects. The basic rule is: if the animal is too much affected by pruritus and appears to suffer from it, a veterinarian should be consulted to alleviate the problem. www.stiefel-net.de

The skin is the horse‘s largest organ. This also includes its fur. If the horse has glossy, healthy fur, we can assume that it receives an adequate supply of minerals, trace elements and vitamins. Our horses often suffer from skin irritations, pruritus and even eczema. This can often be traced back to a nutritional deficiency. Zinc plays an important role in the metabolism of sugar, fat and protein and is required in larger amounts for the regeneration of damaged skin cells. However, if the body‘s entire metabolism is disturbed, this often manifests itself in the skin and fur. In this case we should like at the horse‘s complete diet. Any deficiencies of vitamins, trace elements and minerals that continue to exist for lengthy periods may also take a long time to replenish before improvements in the structure of the fur start to become visible.

ZINC PLUS · ORGANICALLY BOUND Zinc is generally classified among the trace elements that are essential for the metabolism and is part of many enzymes. It is also involved in cellular growth, especially in the event of skin problems. The immune system as well as many hormones require zinc to function. Each change of coat increases the zinc consumption in the body of the horse. Only limited amounts of zinc can be stored in the body. It must therefore be regularly supplied in the feed. Zinc Plus is fed to compensate for feed-related zinc and trace element deficiencies. With organically bound zinc, iron, copper, manganese, selenium. Trace elements in organically bound form can be optimally utilised by the body. Feeding recommendation*: 2 5 – 50 g per day (900 g = up to 36 days) • 900 g tin/powder • 3 kg bucket/powder 16

Stinging nettle contains a high proportion of silica, which supplies the building block silicon. Silicon is next to zinc a very important trace element for the skin. It promotes the elasticity of the skin, because it accelerates the formation of collagen and elastin. If the skin is supple, it does not crack easily and is tougher against bacteria and germs.

Mud fever is also known as fetlock eczema. It may be characterised by dry, flaky spots in the fetlock bend. There is a humid form of mud fever in which the wound weeps and a crust is formed. The cause of this is usually weakened or damaged skin. If the skin is not healthy, small cracks can allow bacteria and fungi to penetrate the skin. Humidity and heat create an optimal environment for these undesirable bacteria. Wet, muddy ground also softens the skin, thus facilitating the penetration and multiplication of bacteria. As a preventative measure, it is recommended to strengthen the skin from the inside, by providing an optimal supply of vitamins and trace elements, as well as keeping the skin soft and the high-risk body parts clean, dry and crust-free. Treatment is much facilitated by shaving the affected areas. This makes for more targeted treatment and the areas are easier to keep dry.

A PLAGUE OF INSECTS – every rider is familiar with this!

It is not only horses and people who look forward to warmer temperatures – so do pests such as horseflies, blackflies and ticks. They all respond very strongly to smells. As it becomes warmer outside, both horses and humans increase their body odours and this attracts insects. Fly sprays do help, but they are also smelly and the smell tends to linger for a long time. The RP1 product series provides a solution to this problem: Icaridin, the active ingredient used in the RP1 products, is almost odourless for humans and does not have an odour that is unpleasant to people or horses. Insects sense smells when a chemical molecule binds with a receptor, thus triggering a nerve reaction. Icaridin reversibly binds with the smell receptors of insects, thus acting as a repellent. As a repellent, Icaridin keeps insects away without killing them. When applying RP1 to the skin, the volatile properties of

the active ingredient form a think protective cloud that may last for several hours and acts as a sensory repellent for the insects. Moreover, the active ingredient Icaridin is very skin-compatible and is also suitable for human use. It has even been approved for children under the age of 2 years, which also ensures that it provides optimal protection for riders. RP1 Insect Repellent is available as a spray in 500 ml bottles, as well as in smaller, more handy bottles or as a roll-on during a ride. RP1 is also available as a gel with the same effect for partially application to the sensitive parts around the eyes, ears and stomach, as well as for horses that are sensitive to noise. It is very important that the repellents should be correctly applied – the maximum benefit at minimum consumption is achieved by combining the spray and gel. www.stiefel-net.de

A basic supply of essential minerals and vitamins is very important to keep our horses healthy. However, current breeding and feeding conditions unfortunately do not guarantee the correct mineral ratio. As all minerals interact with each other and reinforce each other, but may also block each other or even cancel each other out, minerals should be supplemented in the correct ratio. The following points should not be forgotten: Each horse is an individual. What is sufficient for one horse may be insufficient for another. Apart from the basic supply of essential minerals, each horse should therefore be individually considered and any deficiencies individually treated.

ORGANIC-MINERAL · WITH ORGANIC TRACE ELEMENTS Stiefel Organic-Mineral is the perfect complement to the feed ration. By daily feeding the Organic-Mineral supplies the horse with all essential vital substances in a very high-grade quality. The organic trace elements (chelate bound fractions) have a very high bioavailability. This means, the body does not need to transform them and is able to utilize them very quickly and easily. Thereby the vital substances can go straight through into the blood circulation and no longer load the liver unnecessarily. Deliberately we have chosen a grain free formula to cover also horses with metabolism disease. Stiefel Organic-Mineral prevents nutritionally deficiency symptoms. It is suitable for breeding, sports and leisure horses but also for horses with weight problem and metabolism disorder. Feeding recommendation*: 60 g per day (3 kg = up to 50 days) • 3 kg bucket

Horses have a low tolerance to selenium. Selenium poisoning may express itself in the form of feed rings on the hooves, bare patches in the mane or tail or even lameness. The daily requirements are only 1–1.5 mg selenium. Our soils are often depleted in selenium, which is why it may be necessary to add extra selenium to the horse‘s feed.

Mineral nutrients and trace elements are necessary for the regulation of the metabolism and for the buildup of body substances. Essential minerals are magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphor, sulfur, chlorine and sodium. Trace elements occur in lower amounts but are not less important: iron, iodine, cobalt, copper, manganous, zinc, selenium, molybdenum. The correct feeding depends always on the individual need of the horse and also on the correct proportions, because the different elements interdependent amongst each other.

HOOVES

SURE-FOOTEDNESS Healthy hooves are everything for horses, as they spend up to 24 hours a day on them. If a horse has hoof problems, the approach should be holistic, looking at the horse‘s posture, the position of the hooves and its diet. The hoof requires various vitamins and trace elements such as zinc and biotin, in order to form keratin. Keratin strengthens the outer layers of the hoof and the skin. A keratin deficiency will soften the hooves and leave them prone to injury. Once the hoof has been damaged, it takes patience, as hooves grow relatively slowly – it might take an entire year for a hoof completely to regenerate itself.

BIOTIN · FOR STRONG HOOVES Stiefel Biotin strengthens the hooves and the coat. It compensates for feed-related biotin deficiencies. A biotin deficiency can have negative effects on hoof horn growth. Elasticity and resilience can be affected. Stiefel Biotin is based on the highly effective triple formula biotin, methionine and zinc. Feeding recommendation*: 10 g per day (1 kg = 100 days) A daily dose contains 20 mg Biotin. HINT: Stiefel Biotin should be fed for a minimum period of 9 months.

Trush is mostly caused due to humid or muddy subsoils. When the hoof is soaked and soft, germs and bacterias can easily penetrate the horn. The rotten parts need essential treatment, so the germs cannot cause further illness. It is important not only to clean the hoof from the outside but also to strengthen the immune system of the horse from the inside.

HERB GARDEN GOOD THINGS FROM THE HERB GARDEN Herbology is one of the oldest forms of human medical knowledge. Herbs constitute nature‘s pharmacy: They strengthen the immune system, stimulate the body‘s self-healing properties and can prevent diseases. Wild horses instinctively know which plants will help them. However, our cultivated horse meadows usually contain very few types of plants, which means that using herbs as a feed supplement is useful in many cases. There are herbs to treat many conditions, including cough, eczema and digestive problems. Moreover, herbs provide numerous phytochemicals to which horses have become adapted over millions of years, but which are often lacking in modern feeds.

We ride our horses and therefore make particular use of their muscles. Nature has not designed the body of a horse to carry humans on its back. This is why it requires special training and a balanced supply of nutrients to the muscles in order optimally to prepare the horse‘s body. If a horse has recurrent muscular problems such as tension, insufficient muscle build-up, hardening, etc. this may be due to various causes. The problems may either be caused by external factors such as a poorly fitting saddle or there may be physical causes. There are many treatment methods these days to cope with such problems, including physiotherapy or osteopathy, it is also recommended to activate and support muscle metabolism via the horse‘s diet.

PERFORMANCE + MUSCLES

BALANCING OUT FLUID LOSSES A horse weighing approximately 600 kg will produce up to 35 litres of sweat within five to seven hours on a hot day if it is working hard. This amounts to approximately 7% of its body weight. Included in the horse‘s sweat, in addition to water, are considerable amounts of sodium chloride (salt), potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, iron and copper. Under extreme conditions, this may amount to several hundred grammes a day. In addition to the water lost, these electrolytes need to be replaced as quickly as possible. If the horse sweats frequently and strongly, a salt lick alone will not suffice. Recommendation: a diet containing a lot of roughage in the form of meadow grass and especially hay binds water in the intestine, thus constituting a hidden reservoir for hot days!

E-PLUS + E-POWER LIQUID · FOR PERFORMANCE AND FITNESS Vitamin E (tocopherol) is a fat-soluble vitamin. It mainly acts as an anti-oxidant. This implies that it protects cells against acidic substances and prevents their destruction. Vitamin E further improves the oxygen supply to the muscles and thus increases performance. After a stressful day, there is nothing better than relaxing with your horse. However, you should take care not to transfer your own stress to the horse. Horses tend to relate any negative emotions they perceive to themselves and this makes them unsure of themselves. HINT: Breathe deeply and rid yourself of all negative emotions before spending time with your horse.

These days, a horse‘s metabolism is subject to special stress factors related to breeding and feeding. Horses originally lived on grasslands and their digestive system and metabolism are geared for grazing on sparse grass. However, our meadows are often too lush and rich for horses, which may result in metabolic problems. In addition, horses feed constantly and their stomachs are geared for a steady flow of food, in the wild, horses feed for up to 18 hours a day. The horse‘s stomach is thus constantly producing stomach acid. This is aggressive and may affect the stomach wall when it is not neutralised by corresponding feed. Long breaks between feeds can thus trigger stomach irritation and – in some cases – colic. Such problems can be prevented by keeping and feeding horses in a way appropriate to their species. If certain metabolic and digestive functions are already out of balance, the horse can be assisted by providing correctly selected feed supplements.

LIVER HERBS · TO SUPPORT THE LIVER FUNCTION The selected herbs contain generous doses of bitter and tanning compounds that can stimulate the liver and thus have a positive effect on the excretion of the body. The liver is a detoxification organ and also provides very important functions within the metabolic system. It is therefore often under severe stress, caused by external factors and feeds. Feeding Stiefel Liver Herbs can support the liver. Our Milk Thistle Seeds are further characterised by their high content of silymarin complex (more than 3%). This complex can absorb free radicals that are created during liver detoxification. It can also support the regeneration of liver tissue.

FLEA SEED · BENEFITS FOR THE INTESTINAL TRACT Flea seed husks are suitable for supporting the self-cleaning function of the gut. They can also stimulate gut activity. Swelling of the flea seeds in the gut increases the filling pressure and thus stimulates peristaltic action. It also helps to cover alien objects in mucus for better excretion. NOTICE: Flea seed husks MUST always be completely soaked before application, as their extreme swelling capacity may also cause constipation. In addition, horses should always have unlimited access to water. Feeding recommendation*: 30 – 50 g per day (1 kg = up to 33 days) • 1 kg bag/flea seed husks

The metabolism of the horse is subject to particular stress, for example as a result of feed with an increased sugar content, medication, anti-worm treatments and many other things. Thus toxins accumulate in the body, which in optimal cases would pass through the liver and be eliminated by the kidneys. Horses should be regularly assisted with detoxification by stimulating and strengthening the body‘s own cleansing organ (the liver) by feeding herbs with bitters.

PREVENT STOMACH PROBLEMS The stomach of a horse has evolved for continuous food intake because horses eat constantly. The stomach therefore continuously produces stomach acid. This is in turn neutralized by the flow of saliva while feeding on roughage. It is therefore necessary for sufficient roughage to be available and no long feeding pauses are created. Unfortunately, horses frequently have stomach problems ranging from gastritis to stomach ulcers. These may, for example, result from acidification of the stomach, which is caused when either too much stomach acid is produced or when it cannot be sufficiently neutralized. External circumstances such as stress, administration of medication or wrong feeding may cause this condition. Particularly sensitive horses should be supported with balanced feed in addition to sufficient provision of roughage. Life yeast cultures, for example, can help to support the intestinal flora and to stabilize the gastrointestinal tract. A veterinarian should always be consulted in cases of doubt.

GASTRO BOOSTER · PROTECTION FOR THE STOMACH Horses in stress situations often produce too much stomach acid, which may attack the stomach mucosa. The pH-regulating properties of the Gastro Booster can have a positive effect on acid regulation in the gastrointestinal tract. The Gastro Booster also contains life yeast cultures that support healthy intestinal flora and can stabilize the digestion. Valuable organisms with dietary and pro-biotic effects can optimize food uptake and metabolic functions. The Gastro Booster can promote a balanced gastrointestinal environment following stress situations such as tournaments, stable changes, worm treatments or feed changes. It can also support the organism during recovery periods after diseases. Feeding recommendation*: Put 1-2 booster directly into the mouth • 3 x 30 ml Applikation

BOOSTER

BOOSTER: SOMETIMES IT HAS TO BE FAST.

We often demand a lot from our horses whether in sport, bred or leisure. Therefore the horse needs plenty of nutrients to be able to perform accordingly and to have enough power and energy. Feed supplements are ideal to support the horse in an optimal way and to compensate nutrition lack or increased demand. In general the horse receives daily doses and longer term treatments. BUT WHAT TO DO, WHEN IT HAS TO BE FAST? There are always situations in which prompt and focused action is required to support the horse as rapidly as possible in situations of exertion and stress. Immediate help is required!

HIGHLY CONCENTRATED IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE EASY TO USE

The booster is highly concentrated and is easily taken up. High concentrations of active ingredients can therefore reach their destination within a short time. Our boosters come in a handy size, so you can have one ready wherever you go. Unlike the standard tins and buckets for supplementary feeds, the boosters are easily packed in a saddle bag, car or coat pocket. Direct oral administration ensures that the desired amount „reaches the horse“ and the adjustment wheel allows for accurate dosing. ELECTROLYTE BOOSTER – Balanced electrolytes. Horses lose very large amounts of water and electrolytes due to sweating. Horses sweat very profusely in summer, especially sports and working horses that have to provide top performance, but also during transport in the horse trailer or mares after giving birth. Animals with diarrhoea can also lose very large amounts of water and electrolytes with the faeces. Electrolytes are essential for survival. A lack of electrolytes weakens the horse, makes them get tired quickly and poses life-threatening situations for the horse. Especially horses that have to provide performance at hot temperatures must be sufficiently supplied with electrolytes. Free access to water is essential after feeding a booster. 42

essential amino acid and one of the few amino acids that can easily cross the blood-brain barrier. L-tryptophan is restructured by the metabolism to form serotonin, a hormone that can have mood-enhancing and calming effects. A lack of L-tryptophan, particularly in stress situations, leads to irritation, imbalance and a lack of performance reserves. GASTRO BOOSTER – Protection for the stomach. For further information about our Gastro Booster please check page 41. NOTE: For race and sports horses it is important to pay attention to a balanced diet all the year round – even if boosters are given during the competition season. www.stiefel-net.de

Amino acids are building blocks for a healthy life. Many body tissues consist of protein, an example are muscles, but also internal organs, connective tissue and skin, hair and hoof horn. Protein is produced by the body from 20 different amino acids. 10 of these are essential, which means that the horse cannot produce them independently, but must continuously take them up in its feed. If only one of these essential amino acids is lacking, for example methionine and lysine, this will adversely affect the formation of the body‘s own protein reserves. During their growth phase, horses required proteinoptimised feed rations. Lucerne provides roughage and is a very valuable supply of protein for horses. EN QUALIT OV
