It is great to see our Kindness Tree’s blossom with so many leaves as we get to the end of Term 2. Each of these leaves represent a time when a boy was caught being kind to someone else within our school community. It is easy to see that kindness is a core value and a strong belief held here at our school.

The WOW Walls are also full of outstanding work highlighting our boys dedication to creativity and the arts. Each corridor taking time to highlight works that they feel deserve to be displayed for the whole school community to see and admire. Here it is also worth highlighting that the process is as important as the end result.

Check out the latest recipients of the Gold Book Awards. This awards highlight all those boys who go above and beyond for those around them. Being kind to others is something we place a very high value on here at Midleton CBS Primary and these awards are a great opportunity for us to shine a light on these remarkable boys.

For Internet Safety Week 2022 Ger Brick delivered online workshops on internet safety & cyber bullying to 4th, 5th and 6th class. Ger is an experienced facilitator who delivers Cyberbullying / Internet Safety talks to Primary Schools across Ireland.

This online workshop provided the children with practical information and rules for staying safe and behaving responsibly online. The workshops explored respectful communication online, cyberbullying, social media, keeping safe online, personal information, privacy and secure IT. It was a very informative, interactive and engaging workshop. Thank you to all of the boys for your participation, ideas and questions!

We are about to embark on our Creative Schools’ journey now that the Covid-19 restrictions have been lifted. We have already been busy doing some of our background research. This has allowed us to try and find out what our school would like to focus on as part of this creative journey. In order to do this each class brainstormed and the boys completed a Creative Zine detailing what it is creativity means to them. Stay tuned to hear all about what we will get up to in the coming year. This project is being ably coordinated by Mn Mairead and we are very grateful to her for taking on this project. Her own class have been leading the way. As a class they have started to do Creative Homework as a way of making sure things are kicked off in a great way and Mn Mairead was spoiled with all the goodies the boys made as a result!

Bhí go leor rudaí ar siúl sa scoil le haghaidh seachtain na Gaeilge. Bhain muid an taitneamh as! Rinne muid an iarracht níos mó Gaeilge a labhairt i rith an tseachtain. Ghlac muid páirt i céilí mór sa scoil. D’fhoghlaim muid roinnt damhsa nua agus bhí an spraoi againn ag cleachtadh na damhsaí. Bhí tráth na gceist againn. Bhuaigh foireann amháin í ngach rang. Bhí craic iontach againn! Bhí lá glas againn. Chaith muid éadaí glasa agus d'fhéach muid go hálainn!

Is Aoibheann linn Seachtain na Gaeilge! #SNaG2022

If you have been walking around Midleton lately and wondered who those smart young men are, wearing a beautiful new school jumper, then you are not alone. Some staff members have, in their spare time, become fashion designers and have designed a stunning new school half zipped top. We were delighted to see so many boys and staff members get one of these new jumpers and they arrived in late January. They are not only smart, but also warm and comfortable. Anyone interested in getting a new jumper should please contact their class teacher. When there is sufficient interest a second order will be placed. Looking good guys! We would like to say a VERY BIG thank you to Mn Andrea O’Brien for all her hard work coordinating this new adventure into all things fashion and another BIG thank you to Letitia for making sure the whole operation ran smoothly when oredering them all.

In March, pupils from 1st to 6th took part in the Food Dudes program. The programme encouragers children to eat more fruit and vegetables both in school and at home. It is based on positive role models in the Food Dude characters, repeated tasting of fresh fruit and veg, and online activities from the Food dudes website fooddudes.ie It is ultimately designed to enable children to enjoy eating healthy diets, and to promote a healthy eating culture within schools nationwide. Our boys have been greatly enjoying the programme, encouraging each other to taste and enjoy new, and accustomed flavours. Thank you to our Student Council who delivered the fruit and veg packs to classes each morning and Well Done to all the boys for being truly excellent ‘Food Dudes’!!!

On March 16th the fresh, sweet smell of cakes wafted the corridors of CBS Primary as Mn. Gail’s Sixth Class hosted a cake sale fundraiser. It was a great success and the boys who ran the event got a lot of learning from it. They ran everything so well from collecting money, displaying and helping boys choose cakes wisely and tidying up afterwards they were fantastic, so thank you buys. Secondly, thank you to the teachers who volunteered to help this fundraiser, Mn. Margaret, Mn. Ciara, Una and Celine for helping the boys with everything. We also want to thank the parents and boys from 4th, 5th and 6th for kindly and generously baking the cakes. I know it was creative homework

in some classes but my were you all creative! Cookies, queen cakes, cream cake, St. Patricks Day cakes, Rice Krispie cakes, chocolate fudge cakes, banoffee pies the list is endless! And finally, I would like to thank the school community for supporting the fundraiser, you gave so generously and it was greatly appreciated.

Mn Gail

It is great to announce that after a long and frustrating break from school sports that both sciath na scoile and cork city sports are returning in the coming term. The school will compete against other teams in the Urban 2 league in sciath na Scoile once again. The team will be hoping to build on the schools recent successes in this competition once more. After a two hiatus Cork City Sports will be making a return to the school sporting calendar. The boys are really excited to once again represent the school across different events at the city sports, we wish all our athletes and hurlers the very best of luck in both competitions. We hosted a cake sale to help fundraise for the school.

We asked 4th, 5th and 6th classes to bring in cakes, and Múinteoir Gail’s class helped sell them. The fundraiser was a huge success and we raised €735.55. We would like to thank all the children who brought in the lovely cupcakes and another thank you to the boys who helped out in the Halla selling the cakes.

We’ve had a busy time this term in the nurture room. We began the year discussing our new year’s resolution. Then we noted them down to form our nurture room resolution tree. We have some excellent bakers. Since Christmas we have made rice crispie squares and marshmallow cakes. For Valentine’s Day, we made heart -shaped marshmallow treats which we presented in a heart gift box. At present we are preparing for St. Patrick’s Day by creating mindful shamrocks and flags. We are also engaging in yoga, mindfulness and interesting conversation.

This term we organised a collection for the Ukrainian appeal. We collected the essentials requested by a local group for families in need amidst the war in the Ukraine. These included necessities such as blankets, sleeping bags, toiletries, tinned foods, baby wipes, nappies, first aid and medical products and lots more. To say our parents, pupils and staff were generous in donating is an understatement. Before collection day our school hall was filled with bags and bags of donations for the Ukrainian cause. We as a staff also gave a financial donation toward the appeal. This financial donation was used to buy some extra necessities requested by the group coordinating the appeal. It just goes to show the generosity of the boys, parents, staff and school community in times of need are second to none.

Experiencing diversity is a central part of school life in Midleton CBS Primary. Not only do we offer a broad and diverse range of learner experiences, but our school community itself is a rich tapestry of cultures and backgrounds. At present there are over 20 nationalities represented by the student cohort and we feel it is important to celebrate this WONDERFUL feature of our school! Therefore, we hope to hold a Multicultural Day in the third term to honour and recognise our collective variety of cultures, traditions and customs. In order to plan for this, the school’s Multicultural Committee recently administered a survey to households to identify the full range of nationalities in our school, and to find out how households would like to celebrate their culture(s) on the

day. Multicultural Day offers a FANTASTIC opportunity to pupils, parents and families to positively highlight and showcase their culture(s) in any way they wish. As a result of our survey we received very exciting offers to contribute to the celebrations that include, bringing in samples of traditional foods, displaying traditional dress, playing traditional music, exhibiting and teaching traditional dance, telling traditional stories etc!! We would love for as many families as possible to get involved, be it by coming in on the day or by sending in items of cultural significance or importance. If you haven’t yet completed our survey please do so to enable us to make the most out of this fantastic opportunity!

This year we elected a new group to represent our students on The Student Council. The members of Our Student Council were elected after each class from 4th to 6th held elections to appoint their class representative on the Student Council. Our student council members are: Ronán, Conor, Aaron, Calum, Jack and Oliver. We held our first meeting at the beginning of the year where we appointed the different roles to the members of the council. The Student Council have been very busy this year and have worked very hard to ensure our students have a voice in our school. The student council have many responsibilities during the day. They have been a great help in organising the equipment for yard. The boys bring out the

equipment to the different areas on yard every morning and also collect the equipment in the afternoon. The boys also ensure that the equipment is taken care of properly. The Student Council played a very important role in organising our Christmas Jumper Day in December. They have also helped in our efforts to fundraise this year and decided on the charity which would benefit from our fundraising. The Student Council received badges this year to wear to school every day. The boys were delighted to receive their badges. We are very proud of our Student Council. They are working very hard and are excellent representatives for our school. Well done boys.

A great few days was had by all for our first Creative Schools activity. We chose a representative group to be the voice of the students in developing our creative journey. Thanks to Andrea, Mairead and Christina for all your help organizing!

by Kevin Kresic

Life is a Poem, listen to it. Life is short, live it. Life is challenge, learn from it. Life is valuable, explore it. Life is fun, enjoy it. Life is fragile, guard it. Life is complicated, don’t over think it. Life is a lesson, learn from it. Life is a puzzle, learn from it. Life is a gift, open it. Life is special, protect it. Life is a map, explore it. Life is Funny, laugh whit it. Life is math, count whit it. Life is important, protect it.
