Established 1962

IN 1962, DAVID N. BOWER SR. purchased Mayer’s Cider Mill Inc. in Rochester, New York, hoping to produce apple cider and grape juice products reminiscent of his father’s that were produced on his family’s vineyard in Northern Pennsylvania when he was a child. Establishing a very successful business and a great reputation, David N. Bower Sr. quickly expanded his business to include his sons, David N. Bower Jr., and William Bower. Together, they expanded by purchasing a fifty-five acre farm in rural Hilton, NY near the Lake Ontario State Parkway. They introduced apple cider, grape juice, fresh peaches, cherries and apples, and fried cakes to the farm, and to the area, quickly gaining a solid reputation for their WHITE WINES food products. CAYUGA WHITE By 1982, with the purchase of Vino Corporation, the family expanded into “make-your-own” wine and beer products and kits made with local juice, fresh-pressed and packed at Mayer’s facility. Other kits gained popularity such as the cheese making kit, soap making kit, and perfume making kit. Expansion continued with Mayer’s Packaging Group, a full service bulk wine and juice packing and shipment service for wineries and distilleries.

Dave III currently consults for his father and teaches Enology at Surry Community College in Dobson, North Carolina, one of the country’s premier winemaking and teaching facilities, the only one of its kind on the east coast.

David N. Bower Jr. grew up making wine with his father and serves as the businesses winemaker. He originally got his start producing small batches and quickly increased his output. Throughout the years, Dave Jr. watched the popularity of the Niagara region in Canada, long before the wineries began to pick up on the American side. His son, David N. Bower, III, attended Cornell University and received a Plant Science and Viticulture and Enology degree in 2011.

RED WINES In 2002, Lake Ontario Winery and Vineyards was established on the Hilton property with eighty-nine acres of vinifera and hybrid grape vines. The winery and vineyard produces and bottles all of its own wine and products. In 2005, the Off the Vine Bistro was added to provide a venue for bistro lunch service and events. In 2012, in a partnership with the International Peace Garden Foundation. the War of 1812 International Peace Garden opened at Lake Ontario Winery and Vineyards. Lake Ontario Winery procured all of the donations to make this international garden possible.
