SCHOOL REGISTRATION AND DAYCARE FOR CHILDREN More and more families are coming to Canada to study and make a new life for themselves and their family members. Moving across the world with a partner and/or children can be stressful (and exciting!) and the Housing and Settlement team is here to help you navigate this journey. School Registration The Ontario school system is fairly easy to understand. For a more detailed look at the provincial education system, please visit peopleforeducation.ca/public-education-in-ontario/. Your child(ren) can either enrol in the Public School Board or the Catholic School Board. Both boards are publicly funded through local tax dollars. Children go to school from Junior Kindergarten until Grade 12 (ages 3-18, depending on where your child’s birthday falls). Once you have found a place to live and have decided which board you would like to enrol your child(ren) in, you can use the following links to determine which school is part of your catchment area.

To enrol your child(ren), you will typically contact the school directly. For information on what information your child(ren) will need, please visit settlement.org/ontario/education/elementary-and-secondary-school/enrol-your-child-in-school/how-do-i-enrol-my-child-in-school

Childcare Your child(ren) may not be old enough yet for school and will need childcare. In Ontario, there are licensed daycare centres and unlicensed home daycares. For more information regarding childcare rules in Ontario, please visit www.ontario.ca/page/child-care-rules-ontario. Unfortunately, getting a spot in a licensed daycare in Ontario and in the Niagara Region can be quite difficult. It is crucial that you apply to get on the childcare registry. This is essentially a waitlist, and the daycare will contact you when a spot becomes available. Please visit www.niagararegion.ca/living/childcare/registry.aspx to register your child(ren). You can also contact daycare centres directly to inquire about how long their waitlist is or if they have spots available. Home childcare tends to be a bit cheaper and does not typically have as long of waitlists as licensed daycare centres. To find a home daycare near you, please visit www.niagararegion.ca/living/childcare/home-child-care/default.aspx. If you have any additional questions, please email housing@niagaracollege.ca.
