SOCIAL INSURANCE NUMBER Students who would like to work in Canada or apply for banking services like a credit card must obtain a social insurance number (SIN). Each person receives their own 9 digit number that is unique to them. It is required to be provided to your future employer. As an international student, your SIN number will begin with the number 9 and it is valid until your Study permit expires. After graduation you can request a SIN renewal after you received your approved Post Graduation work permit. Visit the following link to learn more about SINs: www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/sin.html
How to Apply You can apply for a SIN both in person and online. To apply in person visit your local Service Canada office. Or you can Apply Online via the following link: www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/sin/apply.html#online
Documents Required to Apply for a SIN If you are applying for a SIN as an international student you will need the following documents: • Passport • Proof of address (e.g., a copy of your lease or rental agreement) • A study permit that indicates that you are authorized to work on and off campus. If your student permit does not indicate that you may work, please contact your International Student Advisor (ISA) to discuss your eligibility to work - www.niagaracollege.ca/academicadvising/
