La Casa

Swinburne Student Village

Group/Individual: Individual

Project Site: 4 Patterson St, Hawthorn, Victoria, Australia

Brief: Designing a student village for Swinburne students with the given site which is located on Patterson St. The design must be inspired by contemporary and modular concepts in order to provide an adaptive living lifestyle for students.

Project Introduction: La Casa is a project designed for students, who have to live apart from their families and need a place to call home. By understanding the needs of students, La Casa is designed with the spirit of creating a true shelter to protect students from the night and nurture their dreams.

Programs used: Revit, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop

La Casa Exterior Perspective

The exterior of the house is built with timber following the shape of a gable roof which actually presents the symbolic icon of a true home.

La Casa Interior Perspective

The interior ceiling is equipped with parametric modelling, running from the wall to all over the ground floor ceiling to create a sense of movement. Although the movement of the ceiling parametric model is quite opposite to the exterior of the house with the waving lines, it brings a calm feeling towards the users.

Different from the rest of the interior materiality, the use of the materiality for the stair is concrete, which is rough and bold. Inspired by my personal belief in the hustle and bustle living lifestyle of students, the concrete stair speak for the above characteristic - bold, mobility, and roughness

Pottery Museum

Group/Individual: Individual

Project Site: Polly Woodside Park, South Wharf, Vic 3006

Brief: Designing a pottery museum following to sustainability strategy with the use of thermal mass furniture, VOC free building materials, WELS rating appliances, and ceramic facade.

Project Introduction: Museum of The Crafts is a project that is designed to care about users’ healths and the environment. The project facade element is inspired by the surrounding context and the understanding of sunlight analysis.

Programs used: Revit, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator

The building facade, which is acting as a method to prevent direct sunlight during summer, and allow sunlight to go in during the winter season, is equipped

with crafted shading elements.

The exterior of the building is actually speaking for the museum characteristics, which are crafted, uncommon, and detailed. The main entrance which is situated on the South, is equipped with fully sashaless sliding window system in order to receive as much sunlight as possible; while the rest of the building facades are all applied with facades made of crafted shading elements.

The interior walls are applied with the non VOC painting material. In order to highlight all of the artworks, the interior walls are remained white together with a glowy display table running alongside the north area of the building.

Connection

Group/Individual: Individual

Project Site: 380-38 South Rd, Braybrook, Vic 3019

Brief: Designing a Co-working space for the post-Covid era (5-7 years later). Connection is created following the biophilia concept in order to reinforce the connection between people, and humans with nature

Project Introduction: Connection is designed following the four basic natural elements, which are: Fire, Earth, Water, and Air. By believing in the inseparable connection between nature and humans, Connection is created in order to make a positive effect on people’s minds and activities.

Programs used: Revit, Enscape, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, After Effects.

Connection is created by the intersection of three elements in the proposed design: Wellness, Productivity, and Physical Activities

Creating experiences that provide the rationale for a workplace that replaces functional activities (which are easy to replicate at home) with qualitative, interactive, multi-sensory experiences that put collaboration and culture at the centre.

As such, the post-COVID workplace must include design elements of attraction: architectural-scale, destination-worthy, visual and sonic experiences that telegraph the culture effectively. (Schwarz, A More Revolutionary Vision For Post-COVID Workplace Design, Work Design Magazine)

Qualitative Interactive Multi-sensory experiences + = Collaboration Culture +

‘Secret Garden’ Perspective

Although the garden is only acting as a way to connect the two buildings; however, I don’t want it to be just a hurried passage. For that reason, I added in elements that make it a sense of a place, such as greeneries, outdoor sitting, water feature elements.

Regarding the canopy, I called it ‘Solar Mushroom’ because of the PV panel system on top of it. These ‘Solar Mushrooms’ are able to receive solar energy and transform it into electricity for future users can charge their phones while sitting under it.
