FOREWORD BY Dr Crispin Webber and Dr Mohamed Alpha Deen Editors FORWARD It has been of great delight accepting to forward this booklet and help present it for the 50th Independence Anniversary. This is an appreciation and a worthwhile contribution by a fine Sierra leonean, to this anniversary and a must for basic knowledge about Sierra Leone especially for younger generations and schools. Helen's perception of need and her creativity in planning this work reflects her background as an educationist. This historical memoir is timely and will help us all to reflect on relevant facts of Sierra leone's history. A comparative work such as this is almost non-existent as a resource for schools, libraries, scholars and the international community. Reading through this booklet is educative and an experience for even people who think they know a lot about SaLone. Mrs.Helen O.N. King-Scott(nee King) is a true trained educationist, enthusiast and a well disciplined organiser; She is integrative and has through the many years in Germany always been a friend and supportive to the Sierra-Leone community here. Her effort is an inspiration and she deserves emulation, praise and all congratulations! We hope this booklet will go a long way serving as a resource of basic knowledge for us all and for our schools. We recommend this educative and interesting booklet, launched for the 50th anniversary of our Independence, especially for schools and libraries in Sierra Leone, the Land that we love.

FOREWORD BY Mr. George Anthony Historical Editor

I feel deeply gratified in accepting to edit this booklet produced by Hellen, a former student of mine at the Milton Margai Teachers College (University of Sierra Leone). Hellen who is one of that College’s finest products has always been stowing to improve and equip herself professionally having gone on from attaining the Higher Teachers Certificate (H.T.C.) Business Studies Certificate to a Masters Degree in Management and further to a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (Post Compulsory Education and Training). Hellen has always been hardworking and a symbol of excellence. This booklet highlights another aspect of her character namely patriotism which I believe inspired her to undertake and complete this booklet in time for the celebration of the 50th Independence of the “Land That We Love, Our Sierra Leone”. This Multiple Choice Questions and Answers will be a valuable addition to the ever growing historiography of Sierra Leone especially at the Basic Education Level and should be a must for every individual, school, institution and public library.

George Samuel Anthony

Today, a huge Cotton Tree stands in the oldest part of Freetown near the Supreme Court building and the National Museum. Sierra Leoneans believe that this is very tree was where the "Nova Scotian settlers prayed more than two hundreds years ago, and they regard it as the symbol of their capital city. Sierra Leoneans still pray and make offerings to the ancestors for peace and prosperity beneath the great Cotton Tree. This was especially true during the Sierra Leone civil war (1991-2002). The river separates Freetown, Sierra Leone's capital city, which is on the south side of the harbor, from the country's principal airport, Lungi International Airport, which is on the north side of the harbour in an area called the Bullom Shore. The primary means of transportation from the airport to Freetown are the ferry, hovercraft, or helicopter. The Kolenté River (also known as the Great Scarcies River) is a river in Guinea and Sierra Leone. The river forms a portion of the international border between the two countries. It empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Barlo Point, Sierra Leone. In Guinea it is known as the Kolenté and in Sierra Leone it is known as the Great Scarcies. The Mano River is a river in West Africa, it originates in the Guinea Highlands in Liberia and forms part of the Liberia – Sierra Leone border. The districts through which the river flows include the Parrot's Beak area of Guinea, Liberia's Lofa County and the Kono and Kailahun District of Sierra Leone. Control of the area's wealth and the instability of the national governments of all three countries led to a series of violent conflicts involving these districts in the 1990s. Liberia and Sierra Leone founded the Mano River Union in 1973, Guinea joined in 1980. It was reactivated in 2004 as a customs and economic union; Côte d'Ivoire joined in 2008.

The Cotton Tree is an historic symbol of Freetown, the capital city of Sierra Leone. According to legend, the “Cotton Tree” gained importance in 1792 when a group of former African American slaves, who had gained their freedom by fighting for the British during the American War of Independence, settled the site of modern Freetown. These Black Loyalist settlers, called “Nova Scotians” in Sierra Leone, founded Freetown on March 11, 1792. According to tradition, they landed on the shoreline and walked up to a giant tree just above the bay and held a thanksgiving service there, gathering around the tree in a large group and praying and singing hymns to thank God for their deliverance to a free land. Its exact age is unknown, but it is known to have existed in 1787.

The Sierra Leone, Mano and Rokel Rivers The Mano, Rokel and Nile Kagera, Nile and the Sierra Leone Rivers

Sierra Leone has many sources of water from rivers. Throughout Sierra Leone, ther are many small mountains. These mountains have rivers flowing down them, that eventully flow to the sea. These rivers provide drinking water and useful transportation routes to the sea and other towns within Sierra Leone. People either travel short distances by foot, bike, or car (if owned). Long distances are usually travelled by boat or plane. The Rokel River is the largest river in the Republic of Sierra Leone in West Africa. It flows south-west from the Loma Mountains about 240 miles and, together with a smaller, parallel stream called Port at Pepel, feeds into the giant estuary known as the Sierra Leone River or Freetown harbour, the largest natural harbour in the African continent.Sierra Leone's capital city of Freetown lies at the entrance to the Sierra Leone River, about 25 miles downstream from the mouth of the Rokel and Port at Pepel. The Little Scarcies River is a river in West Africa that begins in Guinea and flows into Sierra Leone, after which it empties into the Atlantic Ocean. It is surrounded by extensive marshlands. The river is also known as the Kaba River. The Sierra Leone River is a river estuary on the Atlantic Ocean in Western Sierra Leone. It is formed by the Port Loko Creek and Rokel River and is between 4 and 10 miles wide (6–16 km) and 25 miles (40 km) long. It holds the major ports of Queen Elizabeth II Quay and Pepel. The estuary is also important for shipping. It is the largest natural harbour in the African continent. Several islands, including Tasso Island (the largest), Tombo Island, and the historically important Bunce Island, are located in the estuary. 24

A new Health Plan was established in 2010 by H.E. President Dr. Ernest Koroma. What is the aim of the plan? (a) (b) (c)

To provide healtheducation for schools To provide medical equipment for doctors To provide free healthcare facilities for pregnant women, breast-feeding mothers and under five-year-olds.

New health plan for mothers and infants in Sierra Leone The chance of dying while giving birth in Sierra Leone is one in eight; it is the most dangerous place in the world for mothers-to-be. To combat this, the Sierra Leone government is beginning a free health care program to mothers and infants. The plan faces stiff challenges due to the lack of doctors, hospital beds and ambulances in Sierra Leone. “Sierra Leone has launched a free healthcare programme for pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers and children under five years old”. Umaru Fofana, BBC, reporter, 2010 The plan is expected to save the lives of 1.25 million mothers and children, at a cost of $19m (£12m). Dr Thorlie, who is also Sierra Leone’s consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist, thinks charging pregnant women and mothers consultation fees and forcing them to buy drugs that can cost hundreds of dollars has “forced us to act against our conscience”. “It is shameful the choice we are faced with sometimes,” he says. “Two pregnant women come to us for delivery. They are both in a bad shape but we attend to the one because she has money and abandon the other because she hasn’t.” Funding for the free healthcare plan has been provided largely by the UN and the UK, with the latter promising a year’s supply of drugs and money to help ensure that health workers receive “a fair wage”.

Along the coast of Sierra Leone, fishermen go out everyday fishing and in the eastern part of Sierra Leone the farmers grow their crops. Minerals like titanium ore, iron ore, bauxite, gold-chromite and diamonds are found almost throughout Sierra Leone. Gravel-deposits and swamps are rich in diamonds. Sierra Leone has a good amount of resources to export, but does not export a lot of food products because workers need to feed their own families. The average annual income of a working person in Sierra Leone is about US$160 to US$200 or EUR100 to EUR200.This isn't a lot of money to support a family on. However, things cost less than they do in other places, like the United States. Some of the products that are exported are: coffee, cocoa, ginger and kola nuts.

What was the “Hut Tax War”? (a) (b) (c) (d)

An uprising against paying Tax for huts War crime Tax Payment Military War

The Hut Tax War of 1898 was a war initiated by Temne chief Bai Bureh against British colonialists. The cause of the war was the perceived overtaxation of the Temne by British taxcollectors. Britain's imposition of a hut tax sparked off two uprising in the hinterland of Sierra Leone in 1898, one led by Bai Bureh, a Temne and the other led by Mende, Momoh Jah. To pay for the costs of British administration, the military governor, Colonel Frederic Carthew, had decreed that the inhabitants of the new “protectorate” should be taxed on the size of their huts. The owner of a four-roomed hut would pay ten shillings a year, and those with smaller huts would pay five shillings. Colonel Cardew was not an administrator, but a professional soldier who had spent years in India and South Africa. First imposed on January 1, 1898, the hut tax aroused immediate and intense opposition, led in the first instance by the sixty-year-old Bai Bureh. The operations against him, from February to November, involved some of the most stubborn fighting that has been seen in West Africa, leaving several British troops dead. Colonel Marshal, the British commander, wrote: “No such continuity of opposition had at any previous time been experienced on this part of the coast.”
