Northeast Woodland Training and VT LEAP Bring Game of Logging to Local Tech Centers Forestry Workers, were getting older! We need to get the next generation excited to work in the woods! All of the Forestry and Natural Resource Tech Schools in Vermont have been giving their students the opportunity to get Industry Related Credentials. Northeast Woodland Training, the Game of Logging chainsaw training and VT LEAP are two of these programs. The Game of logging is a four-day training that gives these students a feather in their cap as they get out and apply for various jobs here in Vt. They see the importance of starting these young folks out with a saw training that has been proven to be 80% safer than what we all learned from our fathers and grandfathers. Recently most of these Tech Schools have wanted their students to graduate with having a VT LEAP certification as well. The students will graduate with the Primary Curriculum under their belt. LEAP has worked with the Teachers to have the ability to cover Professionalism in Forestry and Managing and Using Forest Ecosystems throughout their school year. Then after taking the Game of Logging and having Tim Emperor come and do his Advanced Logger Safety training, they will have completed the Primary Curriculum. After graduation from the Program, if they want to remain LEAP certified they can jump into the Secondary Curriculum with no problems.
Besides the crazy weather we are having lately, the Technical High Schools are facing another type of problem. A huge issue seems to be brewing with getting new students to attend these Tech School programs. It seems a combination of a lack of interest and that the sending High Schools may not be steering students toward these programs as much as in the past. This is threatening the existence of these amazing Natural Resource programs. Those of you who work in the woods are very aware of the lack of competent help out there. If we lose these programs around the state, it will only get worse. I would encourage all woods workers to get to know their local Technical Career Centers and see what could be done to help them stay vibrant. I know that everything from offering to serve on their Steering Committee’s, being available to have students visit active jobs, being able to host students with their Co-Op’s – where they can intern with a logger, forester or sawmill, and just talking up these amazing programs to any young person considering working in the out doors could be a huge help!
