Social Hubs - Sustainable Design for Skanssi Sustainable Design Studio Location | Skanssi, Turku Area | 5 ha Housing | 7570 residents

Skanssi is a void in the urban fabric of Turku. The area is constrained by rigid borders (highway, national roads) but at the same time the connectivity of the zone is of high quality. The area is mainly an open field with occasional forests and minor topographic changes. The Skanssi shopping mall with a number of interconnected public spaces is an important functional feature of the site.

The proposal is based on the idea of inclusion of the diversity of users who will be integrated in the common activities in the social ‘hubs’ - the community spaces serving as the ‘living rooms’ for each cluster containing a variety of functions. The main purpose is to stimulate human interactions between all age groups among the residents in a number of activities.

Housing cluster The scheme proposes a variety of different cluster typologies, in which blocks of flats are juxtaposed with row houses and interlinked community spaces. In order to strenghten the idea of social street life, most of the entrances to the buildings are placed from the inside of each cluster, so that the residents have to cross the interior of their area to reach their own homes. At the same time, the buildings with the entrances opening up onto public streets still retain the sense of belonging to a specific cluster.

Living + Working lifestyle in urban village

LIVE

WORK LIFESTYLE >>> LIVE

INTERACTIONAL SPACE – LIVELY NEIGHBOURHOOD There are multi levels of interactional space for inhabitants, public and semi-public realms, natural reservoir, community saunas, community gardens, winter garden sharing with the neighbours and onwards. A definition of interactional space must include not only appearance and functional factors of the physical place, but also the inhabitants’ social activities and social identity. There are no fix program but adaptable and flexible for people. HOUSING CLUSTER The new Skanssi district will be a model of urban village with small and medium scale housing. All the inhabitants can be access directly from the street to the flat entrance or the staircase to upstairs housing. This typology as row houses create a new room to change the function of the ground floor to community space. One of your neighbours can run a small business in the nearby corner of the street. It encourages the local small business and also activates the streetscape.

SCATTERED NETWORK OF NODES

WORK LIFESTYLE

DEMOGRAPHIC DIVERSITY There are different age groups living in the same housing cluster. PERMEABILITY The main pedestrian promenade will be marked up with different material but on the same level with the passage ways to each housing cluster. It embraces the transitional streetscape of Skanssi from the market place, across the central park with the new library and open to the existing green ridge. The passage ways are one of the passive interactional space between the neighbours. It serves as a outdoor meeting place with BBQ parties, community garden project, etc. These passage ways, with close but reasonable distance from block to block, are the place for mutual sense of community.

Mid-density Housing Housing Design Studio 2011 Location | Taatala, Tampere Area | 2124m2 Housing | 1758m2 - 3 Storeys - 10 blocks Flats | 145 Flats

The main concept is a collective lifestyle in this area, where people from different generations can live together and mutually support each other. The ground floor is for retired people. Consequently, the old grandparents can live independently but next to their children and grandchildren. The small studio is flexible function for single people or small start-up companies. They can convert some studio into workspace for 5-7 people. This concept is not a new concept, but the lifestyle is the initiative idea. How we can reimage a typical Finnish residential areas with new housing blocks and can we revise the collective lifestyle- as so-called socialism?

Locating on the existing Prisma supermarket in Taatala, this site has a good public connection with small single houses surrounding. This project is an experiment with the concept of “Mid density” developed from Modulor model plus the collective lifestyle. This image was used in the article “Tällainen kaupunginosa sopisi Koivistonkylän Prisman paikalle!” (Tamperelainen - 5th Feb 2012)

Transformation of Tammela Square History of Architecture Studio 2011 Location | Tammela, Tampere

THE STORY OF TAMMELA SQUARE Tammela square located in the good connection with the city center, the railway system and the university UTA. This square is one of the identity for the city Tampere, with long history dated back from the early stage of urban development. Furthermore, in this area there are good facilities for education and sport activities. During summer, this square also provides the open-space market for the visitors to Tampere and local residents. However, Tammela square remains as a beauty in the sleep. The original concept is to awake the potential energy of this area.

URBAN PIAZZA, as a hub to connect the aged generation and the young one. URBAN CULTURE, as a temporary platform for artists. URBAN NATURE, as renovation of the existing urban spaces to be more sustainable and greener. The new design breaks the square grid with nature morphology ( developed by the ideas of cellular structure). This new green field is opposite to the remaining historical park. The future generation and the historical heritage can develop mutually.

Digital Design in Sustainable Urbanism Explore the design possibilities of Voronoi in small scale urban design. I develop the concept from a landscape project in Tammela Square, Tampere. From the input data, including the nearby railway, existing trees and restricted border, we get the attraction points. Then we create the voronoi pattern inside the border. I seperate the green and playground by their calculated area, which one is smaller than the minimum value will be organised as green space. Finally, the patterned landscape design will be moved up. The distance depends on the existing terrain of Tammela Square. The solar occlusion analysis will be animated in 24hours. Input data >>> Attraction points

Urban Space Design Competition Baku Case Location | Baku, Azerbaijan Area | 3000m2

The name Baku is widely believed to be derived from the old Persian names of the city ‫داب‬-‫ هبوک‬Bād-kube, meaning “Wind-pounded city”, in which bād means “wind” and kube is rooted in the verb ‫ ندیبوک‬kubidan, “to pound”, thus referring to a place where wind is strong and pounding. CONCEPT The folding platform with small gap connecting to the underground station. This space performs as a temporary public space. The Islamic pattern flows over the KITE-FIELD inside square the pedestrian pavements. As a result, it emphasizes the main stage, where the pedestrians can sit down and listen to a Jazz musician performing in front of the sea.

The covering area is 3000m2. The pedestrian pavement is about 8 meter wide. All these “carpeting” module can be mixed between the local stone and the grass. The slight slope and terrain lead pedestrians to a platform to face up the sea, listen the music and let the kite flying over. I like the Islamic pattern and also the carpet field. It was the first image when I started brainstorming for this competition. The final work presented my old childhood dream, upon a hill we can follow the wind - be a kite-catcher.

Anyway, I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody’s around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it’s crazy, but that’s the only thing I’d really like to be.” ― J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye
