2021 - 2022

Mission Team 25 Mission We are a team of cross-sector leaders ready to learn, implement, and advocate sustainability. Our focus is on sustainability as a way to meet present needs without compromising the needs of future generations.

Goals

Vision

This semester our goals were to understand and implement the social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainability through learning, networking, service, and advocacy opportunities.

To utilize our skills as cross-sector leaders and engage in exploration, research, and solutions around the three pillars of sustainability: economy, society, and the environment with community partners, university affiliates, and the public.

"Being green is more than just buying 'eco.' It is an unshakable commitment to a sustainable lifestyle." – Jennifer Nini

Learning 01.

Learning Waste Reduction Watch Party

MT25 planned a watch party of "The Plastic Problem" on October 10th. This original documentary by PBS highlights plastic pollution and how it’s impacting the world, why it’s become so prevalent, what’s being done to mitigate its use, and what potential alternatives or solutions are out there. During the fall semester, MT25 decided to first focus on Waste Reduction. This learning activity helped set the tone for our next activities promoting and understanding Waste Reduction. 02.

Tempe Park Cleanup

On November 20th, MT25 joined Keep Tempe Beautiful on their Daley Park Cleanup near the Tempe campus. KTB is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization committed to inspiring and educating the community to take action in making Tempe a clean, green, and beautiful place to live. They do so with 3 main goals: end littering, improve recycling, and beautification of Tempe. This activity was important for MT25 since it provided knowledge of organizations and people already working towards sustainability while showcasing some of the many ways to reduce waste. Page 4

Learning 03.

Learning Community Gardens

During the spring semester, MT25 explored the topic of Sustainable Communities. This focus included 2 sessions of learning work with Community Gardens throughout Tempe. MT25 explored and learned about how to create and maintain a community garden during volunteer days for Escalante Community Garden and Clark Park Community Garden. Experts in these gardens talked and explained the maintenance required for different types of produce, how to compost, and how these principles can be implemented at home. 04.

Sustainability Fundraiser Game Night

On March 18th, MT25 in collaboration with MT22, MT26, and MT27 hosted the first NGSC Sustainability Game Night. In this event, we learned about Green Light Solutions and E-Waste from other missions teams while playing educational sustainability events created by the School for Environment and Sustainability at the University of Michigan. As part of our contribution for the night, we invited KTB to speak a little bit more about their organization, how it came to be, what it aspires to Page 5 do, and how can NGSC members help.

Networking 01.

Tempe Park Cleanup

The KTB Park Cleanup on November 20th also functioned as an opportunity for MT25 to network with sustainable-driven organizations throughout our community. As a sustainability leader in Tempe, connecting with Keep Tempe Beautiful offered the opportunity for MT25 to create meaningful connections that continued to drive our activities throughout the year. As a result of this networking opportunity, MT25 was able to invite KTB to the NGSC Sustainability Fundraiser Game Night and it gave multiple opportunities for MT members to connect with Service activities to fulfill their semester requirenments. 02.

Learning Community Gardens

Through our Learning activity surrounding Community Gardens, MT25 was also able to connect with 3 sustainability-related organizations in our community. The Tempe Community Action Agency welcomed us into two of the community gardens they support through their nonprofit. In partnership with Escalante Community Garden and Clark Park Community Garden, TCAA offers weekly opportunities for volunteers to join their maintenance Saturdays and learn more about composting, organic produce, and water retention in Tempe. Networking 03.

Sustainability Fundraiser Game Night

On March 18th, MT25 collaborated with MT22, MT26, MT27, Green Light Solutions, and Keep Tempe Beautiful to host the NGSC Sustainability Game Night. As the last event of the academic year, this networking opportunity offered a way for MT25 to wrap up and contemplate future possible collaborations. In this event, MT25 continued to build our relationship with sustainability leaders like KTB and got to learn about a new organization called GreenLight Solutions. GreenLight Solutions is a nonprofit organization based in Tempe. Its mission is to educate and empower students and business leaders to create positive social, environmental, and economic change through sustainability initiatives. At ASU, this organization enables students to design, promote and educate sustainability practices. Page 7

Service 01.

Tempe Park Cleanup

Aside from learning and networking, the KTB Park Cleanup also offered the opportunity for MT25 members to engage in meaningful service activities to support and promote sustainability in our nearby communities. KTB, volunteers from all over Tempe, and MT25 had a great and productive day at Daley park that resulted in the removal of a total of 150 lbs. of trash, 9 lbs. of recycling, and 1.5 lbs. of cigarette butts collected. This activity helped the MT understand the magnitude of the waste problem, even in small neighborhood parks near the ASU Tempe campus. 02.

Learning Community Gardens

The Learning Community Gardens events during the Spring semester offered the opportunity for MT25 to learn about community gardens and connect with possible community partners. This activity also engaged MT25 (and NGSC members that attended) in meaningful and thoughtful service efforts. At Escalante Community Garden, we helped cleaned sitting areas that community members can enjoy and at Clark Park Community Garden, members helped in composting turnover and planted various vegetable seeds including carrot seeds. Advocacy 01.

Sustainability Fundraiser Game Night

As the last event of the academic year, MT25 in collaboration with MT22 and Section 9, planned this event in order to fulfill learning, networking, service, and advocacy requirements. The final aspect needed to discuss regarding the NGSC Sustainability Fundraiser Game Night is its advocacy. MT25 provided public support and the recommendation of sustainable values through the collaboration that led this event, educational and engaging content, as well as informative presentations from our invited guests. With an approximate attendance of 30+ members, this event helped promote values of sustainability, opportunities for service, and donations. The Sort the Trash on Earth game explored some of the common challenges we are facing on Earth and helped us learn more about recycling. The Free Rice game offered fun trivia that got members to think about our knowledge in sustainability while helping the United Nations World Food Programme make a difference for people around the world. Lastly, we also promoted service activities with KTB and ASU Zero Waste. Page 9
