Festive Stress? The festive period is nearly upon us and though it brings joyful times and happy memories for most of us, it can also be a time of stress and unhappiness. Whilst there is much to celebrate during the festive season, it can also bring plenty of stressful times along with it. Whether it is stress from all of the shopping, preparing and entertaining that many people accept as a part of Christmas and New Year, financial worries when faced with the expense of Christmas or strained family relations seeming more heightened and tense at this time of year, it can all go some way to make you feel overwhelmed and totally stressed out. If this is you, there are a few things you can do to help yourself de-stress – even if you only have limited time. The simplest and quickest thing you can do to get those feelings of stress under control is to focus on your breathing. Spend a few moments focusing on taking deep breaths – breathing in for a count of four through your nose and out for a count of five through your mouth. Not only does this focus on your breathing take your mind away from the things that stress you out for a few minutes but it also physically acts upon one of the symptoms of stress – rapid shallow breathing. The great thing about this is that you can do this anywhere – whether in the middle of a packed shopping centre or stood in front of a hot stove full of pans. There are other practical steps you can take if you have a little more time. Exercise is great for reducing

symptoms of stress as well as flooding the body with feel-good endorphins and this can be anything from a brisk wintry walk to an hour in the gym – whatever works for your lifestyle. You can also try journalling or mindfulness as a way to reduce feelings of stress. Sometimes though, the festive period can bring up deeper feelings of unhappiness or anxiety and that is totally normal too. The adverts on TV can make you feel like the whole world is having a great time apart from you, which can make you feel even worse. The most important thing to remember is that you are not alone – there are many people out there who feel just the same way as you. It might seem like a tall order but try to be kind to yourself – beating yourself up for not feeling just like everyone else does nobody any good. Very often these feelings – whether stress or unhappiness and depression - pass just as the season passes but if you find these feelings lingering into the new year, it might be time to consider taking action to deal with these feelings properly. There are many options you can take, whether it is finding an appropriate self-help book or maybe considering a talking therapy such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) to work through these feelings and go forward into the new year feeling much more positive and able to cope with whatever life throws your way.

Marie Scott is a CBT therapist and psychotherapist, based at Maple House Clinic in Eastwood, NG16 3BD. She deals with issues such as anxiety, depression, stress and anger amongst many others. For more information about Marie and the issues she can help with, please visit www.chrysalistherapyservices.co.uk or give her a call on 07791 894227. Marie provides all clients a safe and confidential space in which to deal with their issues.

The play area which is being provided by Gedling Borough Council will incorporate the park’s mining heritage with a rustic mining tower, mining train and ‘old pit’ grasslands ensuring the history of the park is remembered for years to come. The park will include a toddler area celebrating Gedling Colliery Station and lagoons, complete with swings, slides and wheelchair accessible roundabout. A junior area showcases the ‘old pit’ and Gedling Grasslands with a 7 metre rustic mining tower at its heart with slides, sculptures and granite ‘coal effect’ boulders and a teen area which celebrates the park’s wild woodland habitat, features a zip wire and adventurous climbing area. The park is being part-funded by the council who are providing £150,000 alongside a grant from WREN’S FCC Community Action Fund, who will provide £50,000 after a successful joint bid for funding by the Friends of Gedling Country Park group. Leader of the Council, Councillor John Clarke said: “We are very proud to be providing our residents with this excellent play area that children will enjoy for many years to come. It will make what is already a destination Country Park even better and puts us firmly on the map. The work that the Friends of group have done to secure funding alongside the £150,000 that we’ve invested has ensured that this park will bring families from far and wide and we couldn’t be happier with it.”

Carry on Karting! WIN one of 5 x £80 activity vouchers* Langar Karting and Quad Centre is one of the largest activity centres in the country, offering a huge range of activities for all age ranges. I took four boys for a day of karting and quad biking; what a fantastic experience! We received a really warm welcome from Chris, the manager. The centre is well organised and very professional. You really feel you are in safe hands. The massive indoor karting circuit is great. After a safety briefing, we were let lose in the 270cc/50mph karts. There is a 150 foot long flyover bridge as well as a tricky hair-pin corner. You also get feedback after your go, giving you all the crucial stats so you can see who went the fastest. The boys absolutely loved it. “awesome”, “mint” and “really good fun” were their words. We then moved outside to the quad bikes. These were also a really good buzz and the boys were in their element. As well as quads the centre also has 400cc off road buggies, archery, laser clay pigeon shooting and paintballing, all ideal for team building and corporate events or stag and hen parties. There were a couple of parties going on while we were there and they looked like they were having a whale of a time. Chris, the manager said; “individuals and small groups are also very welcome. Our junior quad biking

parties are particularly popular.” (Prebooking is advised.) With Christmas approaching Langar Karting and Quad Centre is the ideal choice for Christmas parties or why not treat somebody to an Activity Gift Voucher? The centre is only 15 minutes drive from Nottingham City Centre. It took us about 30 minutes from Arnold but it is a lovely drive and well worth it. We are already planning another trip. © Gary Monks

Calverton BMX/Bicycle Track Project This project was started by a local BMX enthusiast in October 2016 and it has gathered momentum at an incredible rate. An initial article in the Calverton Echo detailed plans to have a modern BMX/Bike track built in the William Lee Memorial Park to replace the old metal ramps. Local support was fantastic and the plans quickly evolved. The current plan is to keep the ramps and try to build a track nearby in the same park. If there is enough continued support the skatepark may be replaced with a modern concrete facility at a later date. It is important to point out that a BMX track can actually be enjoyed by people on most types of bicycle and by riders of all ages and abilities. This will be a free facility, it will be very inclusive and will be designed in such a way that everyone can safely enjoy using it. There will be grass, trees and flowers planted around the track so it will be in keeping with the rest of the park which has recently had a beautiful new town hall. BMX is now an Olympic sport with clubs and tracks popping up all over the country. The nearest track at the moment is Hucknall, a long way for the young people of Calverton to travel. With so much space and demand, building a track in the village seems like the right move.

world. It would bring focus, fitness and enjoyment to the local community. The benefits cannot be overstated. There are now over 300 hand signed signatures on the petitions which can be found at local businesses around the village and a staggering 600+ signatures online. Support has been overwhelming. Signatures and support is coming from parents, kids, teachers, professional riders, local police, BMX legends and councillors. The petitions can be found on the CalvertonNottingham Facebook page or on www. calverton-nottingham.co.uk. Alternatively visit the village and sign the petition at one of the following splendid local businesses - The Admiral Rodney - Main St, The Pork Butchers St Wilfreds Sq, Fresh and Tasty, Flatts Lane and Wheelers Convenience Store, Flatts Lane all in Calverton. This is a real community project aiming to improve facilities for all to enjoy. Please show your support and sign the petitions. We will keep you posted with progress.

Gone are the days of all young people just wanting to play football. BMX is a fantastic, family centred sport. This track would give local youngsters an avenue into a sport that could potentially take them all over the UK and the

Why do we eat Turkey at Christmas? Over recent years one might think we have become a little tired of the traditional turkey, with lots of celebrity chefs offering a range of alternatives - going back to the traditional Dickensian goose, or a stunning beef rib roast, duck, fish or more exotic combinations from cuisines around the world. But for most of us, Christmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without a turkey, around 76% of us have it as the centrepiece of our festive meal. It wasn’t always the case of course, turkeys were first brought to Britain around 1526 but it remained a rare luxury. Instead, people ate goose but also roast swan, pheasant, peacock and even roast boar’s head decorated with holly and fruit. Rumour has it that Henry VIII was the first English king to eat turkey, although Edward

VII is said to have made eating turkey fashionable at Christmas. Indeed, turkey was pretty much a luxury right up until the 1950s when they became more widely available and refrigerators became commonplace, and now 10 million of them are eaten in the UK every year. Apparently, and this won’t come as much of a surprise to most of us… it is women who are mostly responsible for preparing the Christmas lunch with 67% of British women being in charge of the feast every year, although most of us don’t go for our first “solo” attempt until we are at least 34! Whatever you are eating for your Christmas lunch, or enjoying over the seasonal holidays, make the most of it, and soon the nights will be getting lighter again.

Salmon with Clementines, Vodka and Honey, with a Horseradish Crème Fraiche. Ingredients For the Fish... zest & juice 4 clementines & 1 orange, 2 further clementines sliced 100ml vodka 5 tbsp clear honey 1tsp caster sugar 1kg side of salmon, bones removed (oil the skin side before dressing) For the Crème Fraiche... 200g crème fraîche 2 tbsp creamed horseradish small pack chives, snipped salt and pepper to taste

To make the crème fraîche, mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, season with black pepper and a little salt (hold back a few chives to sprinkle on the top) When the salmon is ready, reheat the remaining glaze (add a splash of water if too thick) and brush it over the top .

Salt Rubbed Turkey with Clementine and Bay Butter (would serve approx 8) If, like most of us, you prefer a traditional turkey for lunch on the big day, why not keep the clementine theme and try this twist on the classic Christmas Day roast?

Method

Ingredients 11-12lb oven-ready turkey with giblets removed For the Salt Mix... 5 bay leaves, crumbled if dry, torn if fresh 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaf 1tsp black peppercorns 85g/ 3oz coarse sea salt zest of 1 orange

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line a baking tray with oiled baking parchment and place the (oiled) salmon skin side down in the middle. Slice the salmon into 8 fillets, cutting through the flesh but not the skin. Brush the salmon with the glaze, making sure you get in between the gaps. Save some for brushing on at the end. Lay the clementine slices down the centre of the fish, and bake for 20 mins.

For the Clementine and Bay Butter... 100g/ 4oz butter softened zest and juice 1 clementine splash of sherry large thyme sprig, leaves picked 2 bay leaves (fresh or dried)

Bring the clementine zest and juice, vodka and honey to a gentle bubble in a pan, season a little. Simmer for approx 10 mins until reduced, add clementine slices and simmer for a further 5 mins until soft and sticky. Remove fruit slices and set aside. Bubble the liquid until thickened and glossy.

Method Up to 24 hrs before, salt the turkey. Grind all the ingredients to make a wet salt. Sit the turkey in its roasting tin, gently rub a little vegetable oil over the bird and generously rub the salt all over. Cover with cling film and return to the fridge. To make the clementine & bay butter, mash all the ingredients together in a bowl with some seasoning and set aside. (Can be made up to 2 days ahead or frozen for up to a month) Remove the turkey from the fridge 1 hr before you want to cook it. Wipe the excess salt rub off the bird with kitchen roll and pat it dry. When you are ready to cook the bird, gently push your fingers under the breast skin from the neck cavity and loosen it from the meat, taking care not to break the skin. Rub some of the butter on the flesh under the skin and then bring the skin back over. Take the rest of the butter and rub it all over the outside of the Turkey. Cover loosely with foil and cook according to calculated cooking time. Brussels Sprouts on the Side

Do you love them or hate them? Apparently, it’s all down to your genes. Some people can taste a bitter chemical in this traditional veg and some can’t. If you want to serve them to a mixed group, how about combining sultanas, toasted pine nuts, caramelised onions, sherry and a drizzle of honey for something a bit exotic, or perhaps try shredding them and stir-frying with garlic and smoked streaky bacon (just don’t burn the garlic!)

AN ABSOLUTE GEM THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK! After a three year break from the restaurant trade, Naj Aziz is back with a bang. Using his 25 years of multi award winning restaurant experience (The Indian and MemSaab), he has launched Masala Junction. Situated in the old Natwest bank on the junction between Mansfield Road and Hucknall Road in Carrington/Mapperley Park, the restaurant offers authentic Indian dishes in a building with both history and character. A year in the making, Naj bought the bank back in March 2015, and with the help of architect and sister in law Lyn NiblockAziz, he has transformed the building into the stunning restaurant it is today. Truly a family affair, Mr Aziz’s brother is a partner in the venture, his niece designed all the graphics, his cousin is the manager and his nephew works front of house. The love and passion the family have for the restaurant filters down into everything they do. I took my own brood, including children aged 5, 7 and 16, there for my birthday. The little ones don’t like food that is too spicy (korma kids) and my eldest is a vegetarian that doesn’t really eat vegetables so I was slightly worried! Well, I needn’t have been. Isram (Naj’s brother in law) who looked after us, was amazing. He suggested korma for the children, even though it wasn’t on the menu and poppadoms and chutneys appeared pretty quickly to keep the hungry children busy. To start we had the paneer and broccoli tikka (£6.50) and the sigri kebab selection (for 2) that included chicken tikka, lamb

chops and rehmi kebab (£12.50). It was exquisitely presented with vibrant pickles, purees and a range of garnishes. The chicken tikka went down a treat with my daughter (7) and the paneer was loved by my 16 year old too, a very successful start to our meal. For mains we had the junction jalfrezi (£11.95), lamb rogan josht (£12.95), vegetable biryani (£13.50) and of course the chicken korma, served with pulao rice (£3.50) and a selection of nan breads (£2.50 - £2.95). All the food was delicious and cooked to perfection. The keema nan, always a good indicator, was packed with really tasty meat. Stuffed to the max we still managed to order a few puddings. The chocolate fondant was divine and the coconut icecream, served in a half coconut with all the trimmings was devoured by my 5 year old. All in all a fantastic evening. If you are looking for that wow factor then look no further than Masala Junction. It has it all. © Cat Hedges

War Time at Robert Mellors by Bob Massey

Robert Mellors junior school on Bonington Drive is now the oldest school in Arnold. It still uses the original buildings which date from 1932. There are older school buildings that exist in the area, the former Church Drive school and the National school, but they are no longer used as schools.

In May 1941 over 400 Arnold residents enjoyed a variety show by the Blackouts Concert Party at the school in aid of War Weapons Week. The artists included the Angelus Singers, Wally Oldham (Nottinghams own George Formby), dancer Dorinova, comedian Freddy Batters, Jack Ellis, George Jackson, Arthur Morley and the Tzangane Orchestra. During Salute the Soldier week in June 1944 a further concert was arranged at the school by Mrs E H Clarkson and Mrs Stacey Blake, the wife of the local artist and author of the Sexton Blake stories. The fund benefited by over £15 pounds.

Robert Mellors was originally built as a boys secondary school and it was well equipped for the time with a large hall and good stage, both of which survive today. It was regularly used by the boys for plays and events throughout the year to raise money for the school. During World War Two it was put to use by the local community for all types of events outside the school curriculum. Dances, concerts and whist drives to name but a few. Most of these events were to raise money for the war effort but also provided much need moments of relaxation and entertainment away from the war. On 19th March 1940, the boys of the school provided a show in aid of the Arnold Nursing Association. This consisted of two one act plays; “Eldorado” and “The Ghost of Jerry Bundler”. These were combined with solos, monologues and selections by the school choir which made up an evening which was greatly appreciated. The performance finished with scenes from “The Merchant of Venice” which proved to be a great climax to the evening.

In October of the same year the ladies of the Townwomens Guild also gave a concert at the school. This time it was in aid of the Womens Air Training Corp. The artists included Mrs Leese, Miss Murial Gallon, Mrs Sabbage, Mrs Collins, Mrs Bass, Mrs Watchman, Mrs Wilson and Mrs Rathbone. The show was compared by the leader of the girls section of the Air training Corp Flag Officer Caunt. Only a month later another concert, this time in aid of male members of the local squadron of the Air Training Corp, took place. The artists included Mark Mellors, Miss Martin and Miss Harrison, Mr Gadsby, Miss Masterman and Mr Boot of the Magicians Guild. (The Guild is still going strong today). The show was accompanied by Miss Brent on the piano with Flying Officer Hadfield as the compare. It was all again arranged by Mrs Stacey Blake and Mrs Clarkson. It was not all concerts however. During the war, dances were very popular. One such event was organised at the school for Wings for Victory Campaign in March 1943. About 300 residents attended this event and the fund benefited from the £20 raised.

I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

ir W itch: la B s w ie v Bur ton Re ing Again! p m a C g in er Go So I’m Nev Originally known as ‘The Woods’, this secret sequel to the revolutionary The Blair Witch Project, a horror film that rocked, terrified and inspired the industry and it’s audiences, has a lot on its shoulders. But with some great talent behind it, most notably the director Adam Wingard, the movie had some safe hands to lead the audience’s quivering ones through this camping trip from hell. The story sees James and his friends enter those creepy woods searching for his long lost sister Hannah, one of the people who went missing after the events of the first Blair Witch. With six new victims to play with, the Blair Witch gets up to her old tricks of tormenting and terrifying not only those unfortunate campers on a mission, but also her favourite victims, the audience. The pacing in this film is great. In all great horror films the pacing raises the tension slowly, precisely and unbearably until a finale of pure fear has gripped the audience. While the beginning third of the film felt a bit boring, what it lacked in excitement it made up for in laying the groundwork for some eye popping revelations later. It also added juicy depth to the Blair Witch myth, one which fans have been baffled by since the end credits of the first film. When this movie switches into high gear, it does so with a vengeance. Even as I am writing this, going through the spine chilling moments in my head, I have to keep checking my surroundings, just making sure nothing is about to go bump in the mid-day! There were moments when I just couldn’t take another second of how intensely terrifying this film was becoming and I checked out the cinema steps instead. There is one weak aspect of this film and that is the characters. The six victi – I mean protagonists of this film are your stereotypical, vanilla, cookie cutter characters that don’t bring anything new or interesting to the film or to the genre. The acting in the first third of this film is serviceable

at best and some of the characters are strangely really difficult to like. However, when the £$*% hits the fan you can’t help but root for most of them. Hell when tears were flowing and screams were echoing through the trees I couldn’t help but completely buy into their dynamics and pray for them. That alone is testament to the power of the film. In most films if you don’t warm to the characters, you normally can’t wait for them to get their just desserts, but in Blair Witch the scenarios are so terrifying you don’t want anyone to have to go through this. In short, this movie screwed me up. If you’re in the mood for major paranoia in the light or dark and haunting images that you can’t get out of your mind, then this terrorising ride of a horror film is the one for you, good luck. Blair Witch = 8/10 © Sam Burton (aged 19)

Gas Safe registered number 215996

Paralympic swimming champion James Crisp returned to his old school, Arnold Hill Academy, to officially open its brand new £14-million-pound building. With 12 Paralympic medals to his name, including three golds, and a host of other world and European titles, James says he’s honoured to be invited back for the opening. He attended the school between 1994 and 2001, when he was emerging as one of the country’s most talented young Parasportsmen. While studying for his A levels in 2000 he represented GB at the Sydney Paralympics. Pupils and staff begun using the state-of-theart facility, which boasts a four court indoor sports hall, 380-person capacity theatre and recording studio, from the start of this term. The building, which was delivered by Wates Construction, is also garnering national attention for its cutting edge design, with classrooms wrapped around the sports hall and theatre. It’s the first time this innovative superblock model, which was designed by Wates and IID Architects, has been used anywhere in the country. Students at the school were over the moon to be meeting the 34-year-old sporting hero, who talked to them about his inspiring journey to success after contracting polio as a child.

ARNOLD SWIMMING CLUB NEWS

Club Championships Rested and raring to go Arnold Swimming Club members have started the 2016 Autumn season with a bang! The Club held its 2016 Annual Club Championships during September with swimmers attaining a fabulous 600 new personal best times. For some swimmers this was their first experience of competitions and we are proud to say they all performed to a high standard. The Club will be hosting its Awards Presentation night in January 2017.

Competitions The competition season is now in full swing and success continues to flow on from the dedication to training in the pool. Arnold SC had a magnificent 1st place win at Hucknall in Round 1 of the prestigious Arena League securing 2nd place in the League overall and will be off on a road trip to Leighton Buzzard for Round 2. In the Notts ASA Stage 2, Arnold Team members had 2nd place successes in both Rounds 1 and 2 securing them a place in the final at Mansfield. Continued good performance swims were also recorded in Rounds 4 and 5 of the Sports Centre League. Arnold swimmers have also successfully competed individually in numerous open competitions including the Dukeries Open Meet and the Matlock Open Meet as well as Rounds 4 and 5 of the Sports Centre league. The Club recently had a surprise visit from ex swimmer Sahana Muthuswamy whilst on a family visit from India back to the UK - we are pleased that Sahana continues to swim at a high standard and is State 50m Freestyle and Butterfly Age Group Champion.

Fundraising The Club continues to raise funds to support local charities and will be holding a Relay Team Fun Session in December – our thanks go to all for their contributions during 2016.

Volunteers In proud recognition of our volunteers, Arnold SC wishes to announce congratulations to Abbie Marrow for passing her Level 1 Teaching.

Celebration! 2016 has been another great year for Arnold SC – thank you - without the help of volunteers, parents, family members and friends this would not have been possible. Special thanks to all our Coaching Staff and the Committee for their dedication in continuing to strive for the best for the Club. If you are looking for a great place to be come and join us in 2017!!

Claire Johnston is a Pilates Instructor running classes in Long Eaton and Woodthorpe. My sister and I, as total beginners, went to a class to try it out. Usually, newcomers would have a taster session to introduce them to the principles of Pilates but, as we couldn’t make one, we just jumped right in with a more progressive class! Claire teaches Matt Based Pilates and uses the ‘ABC’s to start each class. A for alignment, B for breathing and C for core activation, focussing on these three key areas in each exercise helps you get the best results from your time.

When we arrived, Claire was really helpful and friendly and we started on time. Starting the class in a standing position, you move between lying and sitting, doing various exercises, predominantly working the abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. One of the

best things about the class was how Claire moves around giving each person individual feedback so you feel like you’re in the best possible position each time. Claire instructs with a mixture of spoken explanations, imagery and visual demonstrations so, however you learn, the class is very easy to understand and we didn’t struggle to pick up the various positions and movements, despite not having made the taster. While Pilates can be physically demanding, the class is more relaxing than an aerobic exercise class, which was something I really enjoyed and which makes it stand out from other types of workout. The class was attended by women of all ages, each working to their own ability and towards their own goals. There was a friendly camaraderie amongst the regular attendees. There are both women and men in Claire’s other classes. The class lasted 45 minutes, making it easy to slot into your day. The next day I didn’t notice any muscle aches like I would after an exercise class, which I think must be down to the thorough stretches we did at the end of the class and although we worked hard, I didn’t experience any discomfort or pain during the class, which can only be a good thing! With Taster sessions in December for courses starting in January 2017, what better time to start something new? Call or Text Claire on 07730 128556

Don’t settle for a diet plan, upgrade your Don’t settle for a diet plan, upgrade your health instead health instead

Don’t plan another diet for January

Don’t diet plan Christmasexpect is a timea of family get togethers, log fires, mulled wine and fantastic food.

For the majority of us, this is also a time of expanding waistlines. We merrily guzzle down several large Christmas dinners, cheese and lots of lovely sweet things, all in preparation for the big January slim down. We tell ourselves it’s ok to overeat because come January, we will be our slimmest ever. We will start by cutting everything bad out, we will join a gym and our willpower will be at the highest possible level. But first, let’s just eat all the chocolate in the house to make sure it doesn’t tempt us later.

successfully. The question does however remain: did they achieve this just through a January crash diet? Aside from setting realistic expectations for this January, it’s worth mentioning that establishing healthy habits takes time. In fact, it may take up to 3 months for Evidence based science a single habit to stick. So what can you really do? As a nutritionist, one of the concerning patterns I always see is lack of nutrients in the average diet. Marginal deficiencies in vitamins and minerals don’t just lead to food cravings but they also result in generally poor health.

If you are planning yet another diet in January, give up before you start, dieting simply doesn’t work. This isn’t some kind of backward psychology aimed at gearing you uppersonal to prove me wrong, it is merely stating the simple It’s fact that diets don’t succeed long term.

Instead of focusing on calorie counting this January, What nutritional help with? why not can change to adding therapy in more vitamins and minerals. Since the majority of these reside in a variety of plants, switching half of what you eat to vegetables will not only result in a naturally lower calorie intake but it’ll also fill your body with the kind of nutrients it really needs.

Sure, we have all heard of a miraculous weight loss achievement that some internet sensation has achieved, maybe you even know someone that has slimmed down

If you have the budget, working with a registered nutritionist may be a good starting point in establishing healthier habits for life.

Gedling walkers to receive special recognition for making people more active A team of volunteer walkers are to be recognised by the national body for walkers for making people more active.

The Get Going Gedling voluntary walk leaders are to receive an award for special contributions to walking from Walking for Health, England’s largest network of health walks. The team of specially trained walkers are being recognised for their commitment to

78

the weekly walks they organise around the borough to help people stay active. The group were nominated for the award by Gedling Borough Council who alongside Nottinghamshire North & East CCG provide support for the walks. The walks are short and over easy terrain, and are open to everyone but are especially aimed at those who are least active. The walks take place in Carlton, Arnold, Killisick and most recently at Gedling Country Park. Anyone can attend the free walks and they normally last for one hour. Walking can reduce blood pressure, prevent type II diabetes and relieve stress amongst other health benefits.

Beware of Online Fraud... With Christmas just around the corner, it’s important to consider the growing problem of online fraud which happens often at this time of year. You need to know how to stay safe whilst online to avoid the fraudsters, who could potentially ruin your Christmas. Online Shopping: For most people with busy schedules around this time of year, the common solution is to opt for online shopping, however, with this, comes risk. For example, items may not always appear as advertised, or, worse still, not show up at all. Try to stick to well-known retailers and always check if the item you’re buying can be returned. Children with new gadgets: They’ve been begging you all year and you finally surprise your child with a new laptop, but be aware of the dangers and get your child clued up on being cyber safe. Make sure you get good anti-virus software, but also check out the www. getsafeonline.org website, which has excellent free advice, as does the Child Exploitation Online Protection Agency’s www.thinkyouknow.co.uk site

Money transfers: When using apps like eBay and Depop, it is important to be aware of scammers. More often than not, a seller will want you to transfer the money using a safe payment page such as ‘’Paypal’’ or ‘’Depop wallet’’ so, if needs be, a refund can be issued. Alarm bells should start to ring if the seller wants to use a different method. Make sure you always check existing feedback given to the seller, as this can be a very good indicator of how reliable they are. If you are unfortunate enough to fall victim to online fraud over the Christmas period, don’t hesitate to contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 040 or at www. actionfraud.police.uk

I have 40 years experience in banking and finance. If you are looking to review exisiting Investments or Pensions or indeed looking to make new Investments for income/growth or both, I would be happy to help. It is crucial in today’s uncert ain financial climate that you regularly review your financial arrangements. At Tudor Court Financial Planning Ltd, we will arrange regular meetings at your home or our office to ensure that your financial goals are being achieved.

Formerly employed by Lloyds Bank for 32 years I specialise in life and critical illness cover for individuals and businesses. I am able to review existing arrangements and in most cases I am able to save you money and/or increase your level of protection. I am particularly interested in seeing people who have previously purchased Life/Critical Illness protection through banks, who may no longer have local support and who feel they may be paying too much for their cover.

Elderly Pets One of the nice changes I have noticed over the last few years is that we now get to see lots of our pets living to much older ages, often remaining active and healthy. This is due to the brilliant partnership between owners, their vets and advances with nutrition and preventative medicines over this time. We regularly dogs into their teens, rabbits into second decade cats well over 20!

see late their and

As our pets become older they are potentially challenged with a variety of conditions and regular health checks such as vaccination or health club consults become even more important to help be proactive with their health care. These visits give the vet the chance to do a full health check and hopefully spot problems at an early stage. Important signs for owners to look out for are - Weight loss or weight gain - Decrease in mobility or increase in stiffness/ lameness

- Change in appetite, either up or down - Change in thirst, usually an increase - Lack of energy or increased breathlessness - Change in behaviour or attitude If you notice anything of concern then contact your vet to book a consult for a health review, many vets actually run dedicated Geriatric Clinics for their patients. As well as a full clinical examination the vets will often check urine and blood samples. If necessary your pet may need further tests such as ECGs, Ultrasound and X rays to get more information and a diagnosis. With modern techniques and better anaesthetics we now routinely operate on elderly pets especially doing dentals which can have a massive impact on their quality of life and ongoing health. With early diagnosis and appropriate treatment we can not only extend our pets’ longevity but more importantly their quality of life!

pets Tiny Survivor Porthos Helps Charity Appeal For Kitten Food Nottingham charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit, is asking the public for kitten food and litter donations for its new arrivals. Whilst thankfully most kittens are found with their mums, sadly some like Porthos are orphaned.

The charity was alerted after Porthos' mum was found giving birth outside, but sadly she and his siblings died owing to complications. Despite initial doubts over his survival, Porthos, like his musketeer namesake, has shown huge courage as his fosterer confirms: ‘It's hard work looking after a kitten this young, but seeing him reach the crucial four-week mark, healthy and lively, is wonderful.’ It is only owing to the dedication of the charity’s fantastic fosterers, plus donations, that it can help so many kittens and mum-cats; last year this was 30 kittens and five mothers. Kitten food and litter donations can be made by calling the Pet Food Co-ordinator on 07949-780918 or by emailing admin@ aaru.org.uk. Financial donations are gratefully received via the ‘donate’ page at www.animalaccident.org.uk The charity does not deal with healthy strays/unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 01159321555. For all animals needing homes visit www.animalaccident.org.uk.

A Walk in the Park As many of you will know, just over a year ago my constituency office re-located to Arnot Hill House in Arnot Hill Park in Arnold. The property is a very grand grade II listed building which was originally built in the 1790’s as a home for the Hawksley family, and was re-built on the original footprint in 1866. It has had several owners since then and is now owned by Gedling Borough Council, but a number of different organisations occupy the premises. My constituency staff are based in this lovely setting, at the top of the award-winning Arnot Hill Park and, a few months ago, we were delighted to hear that Nottinghamshire County Council Registrars’ Team were coming to occupy some office space too. As well as bringing much needed revenue to the Borough Council, the services provided from the building are fantastic for local residents. The Registrars’ Office is open for the registration of births and deaths and have also recently refurbished one of the large downstairs rooms, overlooking the park, to provide facilities for ceremonies. This includes weddings, naming and citizenship ceremonies. The room is lovely, in a truly magnificent setting, and my staff and I are looking forward to seeing the wedding guests arriving.

office say that they have never visited Arnot Hill Park. Often they live quite close by but never actually come into the park itself. If you have not been recently, you really should have a walk around the lake. It is a fantastic amenity for the people of Arnold and the wider area. Perhaps you could have a stroll after your Christmas lunch! Please do get in touch if you think I can help with anything. I can’t always get the result people want, but I will always try. My contact details are given below and I am always pleased to meet with constituents to discuss any concerns they have. If you want to know more about what the Registrars’ Office can offer, they can be contacted on 0300 500 8080. Lastly, I would like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous 2017.

Since we moved to the site in August last year, I have been surprised that a number of constituents who have met with me in my
