from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.....

Keep Your Doors Locked The spring arriving can mean only one thing; sheds, garages and doors are unlocked. Nottinghamshire Police reminds you to enhance the security in your homes and gardens. First of all, keep doors locked and when you are working in the garden or on your car close your shed or garage door. Also, check that your home insurance extends to the belongings you keep in your outbuildings. Also, remember to lock your front and back doors if you are away from home. It sounds like basic common sense, but some people forget to do this when going out especially in a rush. Locking your doors will take a matter of minutes and will give you peace of mind whilst away. It may sound silly but also lock your doors when you are home and in the garden, and don’t leave windows open in unattended rooms. Would you notice if someone snatched your mobile phone through an open window or hopped in and grabbed your laptop from the coffee table? Please be vigilant.

Finally, take a moment to consider the process you go through when answering a knock at your door. Do you know who is calling before you open it? Unfortunately, there are some dishonest people in this world. Always ask for identification and verify this by checking it against the telephone directory and calling the company they claim to work for. If you have any doubts about them, do not let them into your home. If they are genuine they will be more than willing to rearrange, by which time you can check they are who they claim to be, and ensure there is someone with you when they next call. We want you to be happy and safe in the warmer weather. Report anything suspicious to us on 101.

Enjoy a ‘happiness trial’ with the Oddfellows local friendship society. Nottingham Oddfellows has shared its top five tips for feeling happier in later life. Said Karen Pye-Smith: “We’ve more than 200 years’ experience in helping people to get more out of life and to form lasting friendships, so we thought we’d share a little of what we’ve learnt along the way.” 1. Keep your brain busy. Challenge yourself with crosswords, start a course, catch a talk or play, or write a letter. 2. Help others. Not only does volunteering encourage you to mix socially, it can supercharge self-confidence, self-esteem and life satisfaction. 3. Join a local club or society. More often than not, regular contact with those who share a common interest or hobby will result in meaningful friendships. 4. Get physical. There are so many rewards to regular exercise aside from keeping trim. It reduces many cardiovascular risks, including high blood pressure and heart disease. It also gives your mental health a boost, helping combat stress, anxiety and depression. 5. Seize the day! Society research revealed that one of the benefits to retirement was being able to shop during less busy hours and not having to leave household chores to the weekend. By using time more wisely, you can do more of what you love – including steps one to four!

Over 300 hours of mental health support provided

In addition to running social events throughout the year, Nottingham Oddfellows offers volunteering opportunities and care and welfare support to members who may feel lonely, unwell or who are facing other difficulties. OPENING HOURS... MON - THURS

pets Gorgeous George: ‘Look at me – FIV and fighting fit!’

Hedgehog

This month, George is appealing to readers for a home whilst explaining his condition. Former stray, George, aged about eight years, in foster with Animal Accident Rescue Unit explains: ‘I was at risk of being put to sleep just because I tested positive for FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), and had nowhere to go! But this local charity knew this slow-acting virus just depletes my white blood cells, making it harder for me to fight off infection. I’m fighting fit and expect to live to a good age!’ George was tested for FIV and FeLV (Feline Leukaemia) – the latter being a most different condition, sadly often confused with FIV. Briefly, FIV can only be transmitted between cats, not to humans or other animals. Apart from living indoors and with other FIV cats, all George wants is lovely company with food to feast on, laps to lounge on, and cuddles! He is neutered, fully vaccinated, micro-chipped and litter-trained. To ask about gorgeous George, contact the Adoption Volunteer on 0115-9985063 after 6pm, leaving your contact details, or email admin@aaru.org.uk. This number must not be used for other enquiries. Volunteers will reply as soon as possible, and all adoptions require a successful homecheck. The charity does not deal with healthy strays and unwanted pets; only animals and birds needing veterinary help, either neglected, injured or vulnerable, eg pregnancy, age (kittens or elderly). Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should call, leaving a detailed message if necessary, for the volunteer telephone operators on 0115-9321555. For details on volunteering, fostering or the lovely animals awaiting homes visit www.animalaccident. org.uk.

Tales Local author, Victoria Harwood, is keen to raise awareness around hedgehogs. The author, based in Nottingham, has written a number of books in a series called Bushhog tails and donates all profits to wildlife charities. The population of hedgehogs has really declined in just a few years due to environmental changes and Victoria is appealing for us all to help. Hedgehogs will be coming out of hibernation In March. You can help by leaving some nice meaty cat food out for your little visitors with some fresh water. Or you can get some proper hedgehog food from most pet shops. It is important to always remember that hedgehogs are lactose intolerant so they must not have milk. They must not have bread either as this can swell their tiny stomachs and make them very sick. If neighbours agree, a tiny hole in the fence will allow the hedgehogs to roam freely from garden to garden in search for food. Hedgehogs are nocturnal creatures so if you see one out in the daytime then it could be sick and might need urgent help. Contact http://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/ if you are worried about a hedgehog. They will give you the correct advice for helping it. For more information on Victoria’s books and some interesting wildlife facts visit Victoria’s facebook page - Bush-Hog-Tails.

Situated in the heart of Nottingham, Revolucion de Cuba transports you straight to the heart of Havana. Located in a stunning building on Market Street, the cantina takes your breath away. With its high ceilings, shabby yet stylish interior and buzzing atmosphere the only thing missing was the 90 degree heat! Throughout our meal we were treated to live music from a great salsa band. We started our meal with pinchos (nibbles); crispy tortilla chips with homemade guacamole and fresh salsa. Our tapas plates were mouthwatering; patatas bravas, Cajun cream mushrooms, gambas pil pil (succulent king prawns tossed in butter, chilli, garlic and lime), pork belly skewers, chicken rumba skewers and honey roast veg. One member of our party went for the steak – cooked to perfection and served with a creamy rum sauce (of course!) We managed to share a mini dessert selection and a couple of cheeky cocktails. Gin served in a teapot was a first for me (bramble tea) and hot buttered rum hit the spot. After a meal, we headed upstairs where Salsa lessons had been held earlier. The atmosphere was

positively convivial! We were impressed with the dancing, it definitely felt like the streets of Havana rather than Nottingham. The upstairs bar also hosts Fiesta Friday!!! See their website for a run down of what they have to offer. Happy Hour with 2-4-1 cocktails is Monday to Saturday 5pm until 7pm, plus it is worth noting ‘Havana great time on Sunday’ where tapas, cocktails and coffee are 2-4-1. A great deal! Revolucion de Cuba really does have the WOW factor. Even the toilets are a talking point. Whether you're after the finest Cuban coffee, a full on Latin feast, classic cocktails or great live music, we've got it all at Revolucion de Cuba Nottingham.

Chocolate Treats Most of us love chocolate, eating it, cooking with it, drinking it. But did you know that people have been enjoying chocolate for over 4000 years? Archeologists have found evidence that ancient cultures living in present-day Mexico as early as 1900BC consumed a bitter drink cultivated from cacao plants. It is even claimed that the 16th Century Aztec Emperor Montezuma drank around 3 gallons a day as he believed the bitter beverage to be an aphrodisiac! Chocolate spread (no pun intended!) to Europe through the Spanish conquistadors and when a Spanish Princess married King Louis XIII the popularity of chocolate continued through the royal courts.

It was still rare and expensive however and chocolate remained a treat only for the aristocracy until a Dutch chemist invented the cocoa press in 1828 enabling, for the first time, a dry powder to be extracted from the cacao beans that could then be used in confectionary. J S Fry & Sons produced the first solid chocolate bar in 1874 and we have never looked back, Lindt, Cadbury, Mars, Hershey are all now household names. Despite the availability and affordability of chocolate, it still remains a special treat, for a gift, for a delicious pudding, to celebrate Easter, birthdays, Valentine’s day or just to say “thank you”. If you fancy some special chocolate treats, try one of these simple recipes.

Abby Brennan is a café-owner, food writer, speaker and small/start-up food-business mentor. You can find her blog at fishwifeskitchen.com

Seriously Easy Chocolate Truffles This recipe makes a lot of Truffles (about 60), you can halve the ingredients if you prefer, or make loads, vary the flavourings and coatings and give as a special gift. 200g Cream Cheese, softened 350g icing sugar, sifted 500g plain chocolate (melted slowly in a heat-proof bowl over simmering hot water) 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla essence Beat cream cheese in a large bowl until smooth. Gradually beat in the icing sugar until fully blended. Stir in the melted chocolate and vanilla until no white streaks remain. Refrigerate for roughly about an hour and then shape into bite-sized balls. You can roll the truffles in ground nuts, desiccated coconut, icing sugar or chocolate sprinkles or you can omit the vanilla and add a flavoured liqueur such as coffee, orange or almond.

Mars Bar Mousse This makes a very rich mousse so serve in tiny portions! 2 full sized Mars Bars 50ml milk 4 tbsp cocoa powder 3 large egg whites mini chocolate eggs for decoration Carefully slice up the Mars Bars roughly into quarters, and put along with the milk and cocoa in a solid-based saucepan. Heat on a very low temperature, stirring constantly until all the chocolate has melted. Transfer to a bowl and leave to cool for about 15 minutes. Whisk this mixture frequently to ensure it remains blended and smooth. Whisk the egg whites in a separate, clean, dry bowl until softly peaking. Use a metal spoon to fold half the whites into the the chocolate sauce to lighten it, then fold in the remainder. Turn the mixture into about 8 small cups (or sherry glasses) and chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours before serving. Decorate with chocolate mini eggs or chocolate shavings

Chocolate Krispie Egg 175g milk chocolate, broken into pieces 50g Rice Krispies cereal Gently melt the chocolate pieces in a heatproof bowl over simmering water, or microwave on a low heat (checking regularly). Stir until smooth and then remove from the heat and stir in the Rice Krispies, mix well until until the Krispies are full coated with chocolate. Spoon the mix into one half of your egg mould and press down using the back of a metal spoon, make you sure you cover the whole mould but leave a deep dip in the middle and leave a thick edge. Cool in the fridge until set (15 mins or so). Once cool fill with mini chocolate eggs, chocolate buttons or other sweets of your choice, wrap in a pretty ribbon and give as a gift (or polish off yourself if you prefer!).

Shops in Eastwood will benefit from brand new shop watch radios to help tackle crime in the area, thanks to funding from the South Nottinghamshire Community Safety Partnership. The devices, which were installed in January enable eight different town centre businesses to contact each other instantly to alert each other when shop lifters are in store. The shops involved in the scheme have also agreed to issue banning letters to offenders which will ban them from all of the Shop Watch stores for 12 months. Eastwood South, which covers Eastwood Hall and Eastwood St Mary’s ward areas, is a Priority Plus area and receives funding from the Police and Crime Commissioners Office towards improving community safety and reducing crime. The Council works closely with partners and Nottinghamshire Police to tackle antisocial behaviour and crime in Eastwood and initiatives have included diversionary activities for young people during the school holidays, community safety drop-in sessions, promotional campaigns to help encourage local people to report crimes and the use of neighbourhood alert messaging by local beat teams.

Gianfranco, Unsung Football Hero An Italian man who came over to England for a holiday at the age of 15 - and never went home - has won the fifth Unsung Football Hero award from the Nottingham Building Society (known as The Nottingham) after setting up a successful local football team. Gianfranco Formosa (43) formed Eastwood Athletic FC in 2013, along with his wife Domenica, and the team is now a very important part of his life. As Chairman of the club Gianfranco has given his time and commitment to developing the club and has taken it from one team to four in just one season. It now includes two under 9s sides, Cobras and Gladiators, an under 18s and an under 21s team. He has also given an opportunity for the older boys, who find it difficult to get a game, to play league 11-a-side football. After living in Nottinghamshire for 29 years, Gianfranco is an avid Nottingham Forest fan. Although he admits his heart belongs to his beloved home team of AC Milan, he has been a season ticket holder at the City Ground for many years. As part of his prize Gianfranco will be taking his wife and sons to enjoy a Forest game from the luxury of the executive box very soon. Gianfranco is the fifth winner of The Nottingham’s campaign, which runs throughout the 2015-16 football season to find ten people involved in local football whose dedication and commitment to the game is exemplary. If you know someone, over the age of 18, who deserves recognition for their commitment to their local football team, be sure to nominate them at www.thenottingham.com/unsungfootball-heroes where you will find the terms and conditions for entry.

Magazines is 10 Still going strong and getting stronger thanks to all our advertisers, readers and contributors. It’s hard to believe it was 10 years ago that we started ng magazines, or ‘ng5’ as we were known back then!!

With us from the start... “I set up my business at the same time as ng mags and have been with them right from the start. They have been the best form of advertising for me, and the staff are always friendly and ready to help, such a useful magazine”. Mark Maggs - All Weathers Plumbing

“I met Cat & Ali 10 years ago when our business manager at the bank introduced us. They have always been good to me and I get a lot of customers from the mags. Some have been with me the whole 10 years and I’m still getting regular ones now” Andy Crowley - AKJ Contracts.

10 years of helping local businesses, providing a service to our readers and supporting the local community, it has been an amazing journey. We started distributing the ng5 in Arnold in May 2006 to 5000 homes and businesses, and I mean distributing - we used to post all the mags ourselves in the early days. This would be impossible now because we deliver 8 magazines to 93,000 so rely on a lot of our readers who have become distributors for us. We would like to say a great big thank you to all our readers, distributors, contributors and advertisers, without whom this would not have been possible.

Today’s Monday by Gloria Morgan someone else would eat it for you. In those days there were no special “children’s foods”. Children ate what adults ate. If you are a grandparent with subversive tendencies, who remembers those days, next time you are looking after your grandchildren you may like to set the little darlings a small quiz. Question 1 – exactly which bits of the dinosaur are you eating? Question 2 – what is the location of the secret government experimental scientific facility where they breed fish that have fingers? I am writing this on leap-day – February 29th. It is also Monday, and I woke up with a tune running through my head. I expect you know it. It goes: “Today’s Monday, Today’s Monday, Monday is washing day. Is everybody happy? You bet your life we are!”

Question 3 – where, precisely, under their feathers do chickens keep their nuggets? Be warned when it comes to question 3. Your grandchildren may express amazement that chickens do not spend their entire lives bald, pink and wrapped in cling film. Well, did YOU ever explain to them that chickens start off with feathers?

This was a pop hit in the sixties by a group called The Scaffold, who also brought us “Lily the Pink”. It included Paul McCartney’s brother and my favourite of the Liverpool poets, Roger McGough. Technically, I believe, lamb is the main ingredient of shepherd’s pie, but in our house – and I am sure in old time Liverpool – regardless of what the roast was, the cold meat was minced up, mixed with left-over vegetables, topped with mashed potatoes and called shepherd’s pie. If you enjoy singing then Carlton Male Voice Choir is looking for new members. You don’t need to be able to read music (you will be issued with CD’s) or be an ‘opera’ singer, just keen and reliable. We are a friendly, good humoured bunch with a good social life. We meet every Wednesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Gedling Road Methodist Church, Carlton. For more information please call Roland Radford on 01159 874941 or visit our website: www.carltonmvc.org reg.charity no. 516024

Gem Connection Ladies recently held a special rehearsal night to present a

cheque to The Teenage Cancer Trust which is based in Derby. Each year the ladies choose a charity and donate money in lieu of sending Christmas cards and also sing carols at the Navigation Inn in Breeston where the collection is boosted by the customers. The Gem’s would like to thank the staff and Customers from the Navigation Inn for the contributions made there during the night which helped raise £215. 00. for the trust. Gem Member Maralyn Wilkinson who volunteers at the Teenage Cancer Trust presented the £215. 00 cheque to Steph Grayson, the representative of the Trust who came along to receive the money. Gem Connections next big event is our show “CELEBRATE” which we are staging at the Long Eaton School in Long Eaton on Saturday April 23rd to celebrate our Bronze Medal which we gained from the National Convention in October 2015, also Our 18th Birthday in May and the 40th Anniversary of The Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers. Following in May we have our Be a GEM For a Day event. Which is a workshop with the opportunity to sing with us and to learn the art of our wonderful hobby. All details for both events and more information about us are on our web site www.gemconnection.org or phone Maralyn on 01332 761394.

School children helped mark an historic day on 4 February as they helped plant the 100,000th tree in Broxtowe, reaching the Council’s target to plant 100,000 trees by 2016. Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw joined the Y5 children from Springbank Primary School to plant the 100,000th tree in Jubilee Park, Eastwood. The tree is one of three large English Oaks and 100 smaller mixed native trees to be planted at the park, with similar plantations will also be going in on sites in the four larger towns in Broxtowe – Beeston, Kimberley and Stapleford.

“It was a great honour to be involved in this tree planting event,” said the Mayor. “Oak trees are one of the most well known and loved trees so it is fitting that we should mark such a momentous occasion by planting one to reach our target.” Broxtowe is part of Greenwood Community Forest, which aims to increase tree cover in Nottinghamshire.

Eastwood author Deborah Wardle wrote her first book, Dancing Into Darkness, in 2012. Deborah began promoting her work locally with the help of Nottinghamshire businesses in her vicinity and on the internet. Writing the sequel, Behind The Lipstick in 2015, Deborah decided against a self-publishing firm, and learning from her first experience of publishing used Russell Press Ltd Bulwell for her print needs and completed the publishing herself. For three years, The Hiltop Florist, Dovecote Road, and Sugarcraft on Scargill Walk, both in Eastwood, help by promoting and selling Deborah’s work. Reaching eight countries around the world, Dancing Into Darkness follows the desperate plight of a domestic abuse victim, Jeannette Preston, as she fights not only to survive and keep her children safe but also, the ignorance of the law, when she finds herself facing a prison sentence. Her determination during the four year battle changed everything but as she walked free from court, she knew, she would never be free. Behind The Lipstick follows the repercussions of abuse when twelve years later, her fears are realized when her abuser lets her know, he hasn’t finished with her yet, leaving her in desperate fear. Both books are available in Kindle version from Amazon.

You As A Brand When considering your future, think of yourself as a product. You are trying to sell your expertise and skills to companies. It will be harder to convince someone to buy a product when its packaging is haphazard and sloppy. It is the same with yourself – maintaining a professional image is key. Things to consider: • What you wear – Maintaining a smart appearance is not only useful in creating a good first impression, but can also boost your confidence. • Your body language – Even if you are shaking with nerves, try to disguise it. Giving the appearance of confidence is more important than actually being confident. • Your speech – Try to keep your voice calm and controlled and don’t accidentally interrupt or talk over anyone else. • Email Addresses – It is extremely important to have a professional email address. Email addresses such as ‘poopsy@…’ and ‘missbabyface@…’ (both real life examples…) are inappropriate for anything professional. Create a separate professional email account if necessary. Something simple like ‘firstname.surname@…’ or a variation of this is best. When is this relevant? • Online – Employers are now using social media to browse the lives of interviewees so think about whether a post may come back to haunt you before you put it on there! • Interviews – Both telephone and face to face. Even when conducting telephone interviews (which many employers do in the first instance) you should be dressed as if you were in the same room. This will help you get into the moment and react professionally. Think of it as a method actor – playing the part of an assured, experienced professional. Just remember that you may meet potential contacts or employers at any time so always be polite and confident and try to dress in an appropriate way for important events.
