Where do you work and what is your role?
I work at JMK Nursery where I have a variety of responsibilities Some of my primary roles include operating the automatic potting machine and helping in the dispatch area. I also pick orders and work in the office. I attend most trade days where I show our plants to customers and provide them with information about our product.
How long have you worked there and how has your role progressed in that time?
I’ve been working at JMK full-time for five years now. Before that, I would work every day I could get a day off school and every school holidays. In the last five years I have learned more about the business and have been given more responsibility.
What/or who inspired you to choose horticulture?
My parents inspired me to choose this industry. I used to watch them working hard for my grandparents at JMK, and I was so happy for them when they bought the business three years ago. Now, they’re expanding the business even more, and it’s really exciting to see.
What do you enjoy most about working in horticulture?
I enjoy working at JMK because every day is different. One of my favourite things to do is potting all sorts of different plants. I also really enjoy learning about plants. And I get to meet so many new people through my work, which is always really great.
What are your ambitions within the industry?
I would like to learn more and hope to eventually take over the business.
Who has inspired you on your journey?
My parents have definitely inspired me. I’ve watched them work really hard to build themselves up to where they are now, and it’s been amazing to see.
What is a typical day like for you?
On a normal day I spend a lot of time potting plants. I also get to speak with customers, which is really rewarding. And I spend time putting orders together and making sure everything is organised and ready to go.
Are any of your family members in the horticulture industry?
My parents are the owners of JMK Nursery. My grandpa works with us too and my grandma works at a different nursery.
Why should more young people choose horticulture as a career?
You get to work in all sorts of different conditions, which keeps things interesting. Plus, you get to be outside a lot. You get to meet all sorts of different people and are never just doing the same thing all the time.
What is the best piece of career advice you’ve received on your journey?
To be positive and confident. To believe in what you’re doing, and not second guess yourself.
