STORIES AND POEMS FROM YEAR 4 CREATIVE WRITING CLUB 2016 - 2017

INTRODUCTION From spies to strange animals to underwater adventures, Year 4 Writing Club have had an imaginative year. They’ve written about ‘Messages’ for National Poetry Day, as well as developing poems and stories around themes of courage and friendship. They’ve thought about different characters and voices, and created the beginnings of some truly unique novels. Since last September, I’ve been repeatedly bowled over by the girls’ enthusiasm; I hope that you enjoy their poems and stories too! Ms Taylor

THE ICE CALL Anika Khanna Last night, I heard the frost calling, Its ice-cold blast chilled the air, The frosty wind crinkled the windowpanes, The darkness grew and grew till it was everywhere, The icicles cackled as they hit the ground. Last night, I knew something was coming up the stairs, I knew something was watching me, Screeching cries came from all the houses, A ghostly echo came from the jagged cliffs nearby, A dagger came flying through the chimneys of every house, Then the spookiness left the village with a quick snap, The ice called that night And I shall never know why it did.

Friends are the most important things to you Really mean people are called bullies If a friend stands up for and helps you, you are the most lucky person EVER! ! ! Even a bully needs a friend, they just hide it Nobody can be kinder than a true friend Do you have a friend? If you don’t, you have nothing Should a bully have a friend? Has everybody got a friend? NO - so help them find one If your friend is mean DO NOT be their friend Please be KIND to EVERYONE! Laiba Zeb

YOU’RE A… Una Lawther You’re a cow with no moo, You’re a duck with no quack. You’re a sheep with no baaa, You’re a pig with no oink. You’re a pen with no ink, You’re a pencil with no lead. You’re a useless white crayon, You’re a black piece of paper. You’re jam with no butter, You’re a knife with no spike. You’re a fork with no prongs, You’re a collapsing plate in front of my eyes. But you’re my friend and that’s what matters

I AM COURAGE Riyaa Samra I am courage. Courage is me. All you have to do, Is believe. I’m in your heart, Not outside your head. I’m nice and cool, Not angry and red. You shouldn’t be scared. Don’t fear, Stay calm. Let your anger disappear. I am courage Courage is me. All you have to do, Is believe.

COURAGE Una Lawther Courage is a word that changes over and over again, Until eventually your head explodes in confusion. You don’t know what to do, Like when your apron sets on fire from the oven. And you need to do something to stop it. Braveness is my friend. Sometimes when you don’t believe in yourself, Bravery will take over. Like when you’re jumping out of a plane, Or something else like that. Courage and braveness is here for you.

AM I BRAVE? Anagi Bartholomeuz Am I brave because I came forward about the School bully to the headmistress and my pals? Am I brave because I Didn’t tell my mum About my scraped toe? Am I brave because I stroked a tarantula At a petting zoo? Am I brave because I didn’t go swimming Because the water Was freezing cold? Am I brave because I took a risk to go on A zip-line over a lake? So I’m asking you Am I brave or Not?

HOWLING WOLVES Verity Maxwell The first thing I felt was coldness and fear. I woke up, startled from my nightmare. My heart was pounding. I was drenched in sweat. I lay in my bed, feeling terrified. I was shivering because my duvet had come off. I hugged my dear old teddy and tried to think happy things and I went to pick up my duvet and get warm. When I bent down to pick it up I saw wolf fur on the floor. I rubbed my eyes and blinked, I thought I might be dreaming but when I looked closer it was definitely wolf fur. But I told myself it was just teddy fluff and settled back down to sleep. In the morning I thought I had heard howling when I woke up. I was really tired and I wasn’t sure what was real. I had to force myself to get up and I got ready for school sluggishly. I went downstairs and had to eat my breakfast quickly. I snuggled my beagle, Max, to say goodbye. Suddenly, Max’s ears pricked up and he barked scared-ly. Then I heard Max talk to me in my mind. “Look behind you, out the window. It was wolf fur last night,” he said. I was so shocked, and then I turned round and saw two eyes, glowing brightly. “They are wolf eyes, they want to get us,” I heard in my mind. I thought I must be dreaming and I needed to wake up, but I was wrong. Instead I was going to need to have courage, strange things were happening to me. I went to school with my mum in the car. On the way, I saw wolves peeking through the bushes at me. I tried not to look, I shuddered and wondered what they wanted. In my mind I heard the wolves say, “When he’s alone, then we pounce”. From that moment on, I wanted to stay with my mum for safety. I didn’t want to leave her or be on my own. I was petrified, but I knew that I had to go to school. Once I was in the playground I felt safer, but then I saw their eyes peering through the gates and their mouths snarling and drawling. So many teeth! I was so scared. I looked up and saw a wolf on the roof! Full of fear, I ran inside instantly. I shot past the teacher and said speedily “I need to go to the toilet”. I stood there in the toilets for a bit to get my breath back, and then the bell rang. Our first lesson was English with Miss Thompson. We were writing stories about fables. I heard howling but I did not tell anyone. I just tried to pretend it wasn’t happening, thinking that the wolves would not try to get to me in class. At lunch I heard a growl as I was wolfing down my chicken in the dining hall. I didn’t dare turn round, instead I sat there, scared stiff.

In the afternoon, we had history with Miss Mann. I looked out of the window and I saw a growling wolf looking back at me. Hastily I hid my eyes with my hands, but in my mind I heard: “You are the leader, you are a werewolf. You are our king. You need courage to be what you really are. Come with us now and be our leader!” I could not believe my ears and looked around to see if anyone else heard, but no one said anything. Sheepishly, I looked back at the window, but there was nothing there. Then it was too late! The wolves were in the classroom. They were dashing around chewing pencils, nipping legs, pushing people off their chairs and turning over tables. I stood watching as people argued. I realised that it was only me who could see the wolves… The teacher said “Calm down and stop messing around, children.” Then a wolf jumped on her desk and tore her register to shreds. The teacher squealed loudly and fainted. The children started screaming frantically and running around, desperately trying to get out of the classroom. In the panic, the wolves carried me away. They pulled me out and carried me roughly from building to building. Eventually, they pushed me into the school bus and I sat there, shocked and stunned. Then one wolf sat in the driver’s seat. It started to drive the bus, crashing randomly into other cars. Dizzily, I looked up and saw the police following, but the wolves just carried on. Then, unexpectedly, we soared up into the sky like a plane. The bus just seemed to collapse and we shot down to earth and in through a hole. It was the wolves’ den. All the wolves were chanting ``howling wolves, howling wolves, let this boy turn into a werewolf. Let the change begin!’’ Light flooded through my veins, my teeth started to grow, my nails formed into claws. I roared fiercely, my clothes ripped off. I was petrified and confused. All the wolves were snarling with their teeth bared. ``Ha,’’ they said. ``We tricked you! Now you have to fight us. We are going to kill you for being different.’’ I was scared but I knew I had to have courage to fight for my life, so I stood up and fought the wolves, tossing them back and forth until none of them were left standing. {4 weeks later} I got up for school as usual this morning. It’s a normal day and life is back to normal. I really don’t mind being a werewolf now. I just don’t kill people. So I’m being really careful. Yesterday I met a new friend and he’s a bit unusual too. He’s a zombie, so I am not only one who changes and is different. The trick is having the courage to be yourself.

DRAMA DIARIES Sophie Marcus Two more times and I’m going to barf. I cannot stand that girl.  I’m Ellie Clark. I’m in year 8 at Renee School. The girl I can’t stand is Alaina Parker. She is rich, popular and really snobby. Every time I try to help her or be nice to her, she is just rude to me. The ONLY time she is jealous of me is when I use my blue glitter pen. Everyone thinks it’s magic, but it might actually be. Alaina keeps trying to steal it because she thinks it is magic. I can’t believe that girl. This story is about the blue glitter pen, me, Alaina and my puppy, Buddy. This is how it starts. I’m walking down the road with Buddy and my friend, Eva Nerrice. We are supposed to be walking to the store to buy food, but instead we are going to Alaina’s mansion to spy! SQUEEEEEEEEEE! “Yes,” I say. We’re finally there! We find two trees to hide behind and start spying. Alaina comes to open the window to get fresh air, and Buddy starts barking! I cannot believe that Buddy totally busted us! OMG! BUSTED!! I see her coming. She sees me. She goes back in and comes out holding something. Something bad is happening!  She is holding....OH NO! She’s holding rotten tomatoes and eggs! “Eva - duck!” I say. Alaina is starting to throw stuff at Eva. I knew Eva first and without her, I wouldn’t have anyone to help me - and Eva has all the spy equipment. I make sure nobody is looking. I get my phone out of my pocket to record a video of Alaina doing it. I’ll show it to her mum. Then I bet Alaina will get in BIG trouble! Just what I wanted. HEE HEE!!! To be continued…

DEEP SEA STEW Sofia Beed Down in the deep sea, clear and blue, An octopus cooks up a deep sea stew. He adds an arm of a squid and a sea slug on the loose, An eye of a swordfish and a squirt of jelly juice. There’s a bit of salty seaweed and a humpback whale, He plops in the fin of a dolphin and the slimy trail of sea snail. Brian sprinkles a happy clown fish, And serves it up on a sandy dish. But suddenly in the frying pan, The deep sea stew goes … BAAAAANG!

SECRETS OF THE DEEP Beth Armstrong and Dorothy MacClean Far away, deep under the rushing waves, too deep for any submarine to dive, lived a king and queen, King Eric and Queen Ariel. They had one child called Scarlet. However, the queen was in mer-hospital with twins. Both girls already had names; Oceana was the oldest by two minutes, and Pearl was younger by two minutes. At 9:00 am, Oceania was born, and at 9:02 am, Pearl was born. The girls grew and grew, until they were twelve and then they were kidnapped by an evil witch, Black Shinnow! Black Shinnow had black hair and purple lips and dark blue eyes. Her face was grey and crackly as if she’d been petrified. Black Shinnow had always hated the twins’ mum ever since she ran off with the boy Black Shinnow had liked when she was young. Black Shinnow took the girls in the night. She grabbed them and swam so fast that they did not wake up. But when she stopped swimming and got to her lair, the girls immediately woke up. The lair was cold and rocky and covered in algae and black seaweed. There was frogspawn everywhere and weird frog-creatures. It smelt of rotten eggs and week-old socks. The girls started to wail. “SHUT UP!” shouted Black Shinnow. Meanwhile, at home, the girls’ mum and dad found out that they had been captured by Black Shinnow. They put a spell on the girls which made them disappear back to them. At Black Shinnow’s lair, the girls poofed into thin air.

Black Shinnow screamed in annoyance. “THEY ARE GONE! I CAN’T BELIEVE THEY ARE GONE! I will get you, Pearl and Oceania, just you wait!” The King and Queen were glad to have their children back and they were pleased to be home. For dinner they had their favourite – pink or blue coral and extra crispy seaweed, served with a salty dip. To be continued…

THE EVIL PHARAOH OF EGYPT AND THE CUNNING PLAN Humairah Rafi Chapter 1 A long, long time ago in Aswan, a place in Egypt, there was a little village. In that village everyone was happy. One day, a big, red van arrived. The villagers watched as it drove past. They had never ever seen a van as big as that before. They were wondering why it had come and who was inside… Then they saw a little car following the red van. The car stopped and a small girl stepped out. She was with her family. They watched as the family walked over to the kind and easy-going Pharaoh and asked her, “Is this place called Aswan?” The pharaoh, who was incredibly beautiful, nodded. She also said that she would show them around; she PROMISED that she would do that. The little girl’s name was Macy and her mum was called Olivia. The pharaoh tried to keep her promise, but after a few days she felt sick and died. Everyone was unhappy and upset for a few days, but soon enough the villagers came up with a great idea. It was to have an election for a new pharaoh! Chapter 2 There were two people who were going to be standing in the election. They were Katie and Riyaa. Everyone was hoping that Katie was going to win because she was really nice and kind and she didn’t treat her slaves badly. Riyaa was the complete opposite. She treated her slaves badly and she killed people – she was totally, utterly, and completely awful! Everyone was aware of the punishment that there would be if they didn’t vote for Riyaa. Do you know what the punishment was? Riyaa would send you to the dungeon, where there were snakes and a lot of fire, and she would leave you there until you had eventually rotted into pieces.

To stay away from the big punishment, the people decided to just vote for Riyaa, but Macy didn’t agree. She was one of those people who stood up for herself and for her city. Macy said that they should be able to vote for who they wanted and that they should not fear the punishment if they did. The people agreed, but they were still a bit scared. Chapter 3 As it came closer to the day of the day of the election, people got more and more nervous. Macy and the rest of her family were the only ones in Aswan who weren’t scared, “Stand up for your rights!” Macy told everyone. Soon Riyaa had got the message from her messenger that Macy had been telling everyone that they could vote for anyone they liked and that they should not fear the punishment. At this, Riyaa nearly killed the messenger. “She did what? How dare she?” she shouted and she headed off to where Macy lived… Chapter 4 Macy was playing with a game that had a snake in the middle when there was a big thud outside. She crept up to the window, but she couldn’t see anyone so she opened the front door. Riyaa was standing outside. An evil grin spread across her face, then she said with all her might, “WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?” But little Macy was not frightened. She just stood there and after a few seconds, Macy said “What are you talking about?” Riyaa just glared at Macy. “YOU WANT TO KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT? I’M TALKING ABOUT WHAT YOU’VE BEEN TELLING THE VILLAGERS!” Then Macy realised what Riyaa was talking about. “Well, it is their choice. You can’t force them to vote for you,” Macy said bravely. “Well, they had better vote for me or else!” Riyaa said, shocked. “I will not listen to you. I will keep on telling everybody to vote for who they want to,” Macy answered. “Tell them what you must, I will deal with you after the election,” Riyaa said and then she slammed the door shut and walked out. What a relief. But Macy sighed. She didn’t want to die or stop telling people to do the right thing. She just didn’t know what to do… To be continued…

JACK RYAN UNDER THE HOOD Nitya Prasad I was just a regular boy, playing catch in my school playground with a ball. It was a warm day, warm enough for sweat to trickle down the back of my neck. Then, suddenly, my best friend, Jason Finns, stopped dead and didn`t move, not even when the ball hit the side of his head. He just stood there, stock still and staring. At last, he said “Jack - Jack, look!” I turned around to see on the other side of the school gates a sight that would change my life. There was a grey, sleek car with a bland registration plate and getting out of it was a paper-white, sour faced man and a plump, jolly woman. Even from behind the playground fence, I could smell her perfume. I heard a door creak open in the corner of the school and the headmaster, Mr Waltopkin, shuffled out. He looked deathly pale and scared, and his small clump of fuzzy, yellowish-blond hair was standing up on end. He pressed the button to release the gate and, fumbling for a moment with the latch, he tripped down the stairs. The long, sour man strode briskly towards him and they grasped hands – briefly. But the plump woman bounced up to Mr Waltopkin and tenderly patted his arm. I think that I was the only one to notice that she grimaced as she did so. “Now, now… Do come in…” Mr Waltopkin said. As the unlikely trio climbed the stairs to the playground, the tall man said, “Stop.” His voice was deathly calm. He continued: “You understand that I only came to discuss the removal of Jack Ryan? I am not here for a cosy chat. I am here to appoint him as a spy.” The name hung in the air. The warm day had suddenly turned cold. I glanced at Jason and he was looking scared to death. I wasn`t hallucinating. This was real. To be continued…

THE WEIRD MAN Laiba Zeb Once, while walking in town, I saw a tattoo shop. It was painted black. It looked really cool, but it also looked quite awkward. There were unusual tattoo designs in the window and a man sitting down, waiting for his turn. The man had pink hair but that wasn’t the weirdest thing about him… He had pink hair (which I’ve already mentioned) and he also always raised his eyebrows. He had a tattoo of his nose on his forehead and he carried a Minnie Mouse teddy and wore a Minnie Mouse top. Okay, let’s carry on with this story. The man actually looked at me and raised his eyebrows at me! I felt so awkward. Then I realised that there was something else. His Minnie Mouse top was baggy and on his back there was another tattoo. It said something like Ki..ki..ki..killlll? Well, anyway, later I told Mum because she wasn’t there at the time, but she didn’t believe me. I ran downstairs to Dad to tell him. He just said “Kathline Marbouriouse Smith!!! Stop blaming people for such things!!!” But that time I wasn’t lying. To be continued…

SCARLET LOCKWOOD AND HER SCHOOL CRUSH! Anika Khanna Chapter 1 - Boys! RINNNNNNNNG! That was Scarlet’s phone ringing. She awoke with a start. Her hair was frizzed up in a messy bun from her ballet class last night. “Tom! Why are you ringing so early? It’s only 10:00 in the morning! Wait? What!” Scarlet threw the covers across the room and ran to the shower like a cheetah. She was obviously late for assembly and, possibly, in BIG trouble with Mr Butterkiss! Scarlet grabbed her uniform and rushed to her mum’s room, where her mum was snoring loudly under her silk blanket. She kissed her mum’s cheek and ran off to the car where she was greeted by a bodyguard.

Ten minutes later, she arrived at school. Her limo stood out from the other cars and bikes. As she climbed out of the limo, dazzling sunlight spots blurred Scarlet’s vision. As soon as her gaze cleared, Scarlet wiped off the dribbling sweat from her neck and saw the headmaster staring crossly at her. Luckily, Tom was there too, smiling faintly. Detention was two hours long for Scarlet since she had been two hours late. At lunch, Scarlet ran to Tom with her eyes filled with tears. Tom swished her off the ground and gave her a comforting hug. “It’s ok! Don’t cry over these things! The headmaster is always strict!” Scarlet wiped her tears. Now her black eyeshadow was smudged and cry-marks were scattered over her face. But Tom and Scarlet were best friends – nothing personal! His blue eyes, hazelnut hair and perfectly peach skin really stood out from the other boys. Also, Scarlet’s long, brown hair, blue eyes and pretty looks really dazzled everyone. Scarlet’s posh parents and Tom’s strict parents did not approve of their relationship together. Chapter 2 - JEALOUS MUCH!? At next break, Scarlet spotted Tom hanging out with Heather, the prettiest girl in her year group. Tom gave Heather a kiss on her cheek and walked away, blushing. Heather was wearing a pretty floral dress, red lipstick, black sandals, a navy blue belt and her jet-black hair was in a French plait. It was obvious she was attractive! Well, attractive or not, Scarlet was SUPER JEALOUS. When the lessons had ended, Scarlet stomped home and angrily watched as Tom waved to Heather. Tom searched around for Scarlet, but by that time, Scarlet was long gone. Scarlet drove to her mansion and ran to her four poster bedroom. She buried her face into her fluffy feather pillows and continuously cried and again, she smudged her black mascara! DING DONG!!! “Who is it?” “It’s me, Tom!” “Scarlet does not want to see you!” “Why?” “Shush, cool boy!” Tom walked away. His hair waved in the light breeze and the icy mountains towered over the scenery behind the grand mansion. A pretty crimson bus pulled up in front of

Tom. It was dappled in blinding light. The silver-glazed writing on top of the bus read ‘The Bus of Dreams.’ A man stepped out of the bus. He was wearing a sea-blue top and a type of police hat. “Welcome to the Bus of Dreams. Private transportation for the wealthy! My name is Earl Strudwick and I will be your conductor for the afternoon!” Tom smiled cheekily as he stepped aboard the posh bus. To be continued…

THE STORIES OF ME Zaynab Adib It all started when I moved school and started attending Crystal High. I never knew that the school did magic, but I had always thought there was something strange about the Head teacher. On my first day, my mother was shouting, “Oh, Jennifer! Hurry up! You’re getting late for school!” I quickly got ready. Then my mum drove me to school, and she kissed me and said “Bye!” It was so embarrassing. As soon as I stepped in the school, I felt my nose being tickled. I couldn’t believe it - it was a fairy. I screamed. She tried to stop me screaming but when I carried on, she shouted as loud as she could, and then I stopped. She said “I’m your helping fairy.” “WHAT?” I said. “Of course, you noo-noo, this is a magical school.” “But in the reviews of the school, it didn’t say anything about magic…” To be continued…

WORMS Priya Mann When I walked up to the school gates the first person I saw was Lucy, my best friend and next door neighbour. As we walked across the playground to line up we were deciding when we should have our next sleepover. We got inside and hung our coats on our pegs and unpacked our bags. When we were all sat in our chairs Miss Riley (our teacher) said, “We are going to go on a school trip to Sherwood Pines next Friday, so you can bring sweets. But remember NO lollipops allowed!” ***

SCHOOL TRIP TODAY! I did a little (ok, big) celebration dance on my bed. I jumped downstairs and ate my Weetabix, brushed my teeth and got changed. Lucy was waiting outside for me (as usual!) to get my bags. We only live two minutes away from our school so I get to have a lie in (result!). On the bus this boy called Thomas Jones kept chucking sweet wrappers onto the seats in front of where we were sitting so I kept kicking his chair to make him stop, then he TOLD ME OFF! To be continued…

RAINFOREST Sofia Beed Chapter 1 - Sam “Squawk, Squawk,” sang the parrots. It was early in the morning in the rainforest, on a bright and sunny day. “Muuum!” yelled Sam angrily. Sam was a chimpanzee and hated being woken up early. “What is it?” shouted Mum. “The parrots are up, and so are the toucans!” Sam told her. “Then go downstairs and make breakfast,” she replied. Sam dozily rolled out of bed and stumbled to the window. He ripped open the leafy curtains and stared at the brightly coloured, feathery parrots and toucans calling to each other. They were so annoying. Sam scampered off downstairs, but when he reached the Kapok tree kitchen there was an unexpected visitor… Chapter 2 The Unexpected Visitor It was the POLICE! Aaaaaaaaah! Sam screamed inside his head. “Boss, someone’s ‘ere,” said the short stubby one. He was very spiky, and then a tall, gangly one came in. They smelled so strongly of black coffee. The tall gangly one told Sam who they were. “Hello,” he said. “We are the Porcupine Police.” They were dressed in short sleeved shirts and shorts that were brown and green. The colours were used for camouflaging when stealthily arresting someone. Except the short, stubby one looked as if he flopped on a leaf all day… “W-w-why are you here?” Sam stuttered

“We are here to arrest your brother, Oliver Baggston and your father, Thomas Baggston,” “W-w-what did they do?” “They stole a jewel encrusted gecko… and ate it!” bellowed Gangly. Officer Short-and-Stubby finally spoke. “Serious offence, Boss.” To be continued…

DOGGIE DISASTER Riyaa Samra “Okay, sure,” said Jeevat excitedly. Things in her mind were going crazy. She had always wanted a dog. Well, it was only for one day, but who cares… At the end of the week, Nitya, Anagi`s dog, was coming for a whole day! That week passed a lot quicker than anyone could have imagined and when the doorbell rang Jeevat rushed to the door quicker than a police car after a burglar. There was Nitya. She was dressed up in more sparkles than a disco ball – and was she wearing sunglasses? “Wha … what?” exclaimed Jeevat, shocked. But Anagi had already walked down the street. “So, Nitya,” said Jeevat, “I feel that you need understand me so I have some house rules. Here we go! One - no dog poo on the floor. Two - listen to me. Three – Don’t help yourself to things. Four - No bouncing on the bed and lastly (Five) HAVE FUN!” But it was too late. When Jeevat turned to Nitya, she found that a disaster was already taking place in her house. To be continued…

THE SLEEPING TIGER Jeevat Sanghera One day, I was playing around with my older sister, Ella, and my older brother, Max, in the market square. It was very loud and very noisy. The sky was blue and the buildings were grey. It was completely crowded and everyone was feeling really good. But, suddenly, out of nowhere, a loud snoring noise filled our town! The people stopped shopping and dancing and they all stood still. The square went silent. Everyone was terrified, except for me. I wanted to go and explore what that loud, horrible sound was. I decided to go and find out more. I went to see what was going on behind the bushes, and I saw… a big, snoring TIGER. What was going to happen to me? To be continued…

FLOWER GARDEN by the Poetry Club (Riyaa, Nitya, Sasha, Dixie, Ella, Sadie, Aoife, Gracey, Angela, Matilda and Una) I breathe the flowers’ perfume, Smelling sweet and soft, The gentle breeze making them sway from side to side. The beautifully bright sun shines, making the garden shine lighter than ever, A butterfly lands gracefully on a delicate petal. The strong wind blows all of the seeds off the dandelions, A sycamore seed flutters and twirls. New spring is out and is ready to see. A bird sings “tweet tweet tweet” It flies to its nest and its chicks - “cheep cheep cheep” It all adds up to a beautiful day.
