Exhibitions Heritage Gallery

Did you know? National Glass Centre’s permanent exhibition Stories of Glass in Sunderland encourages visitors to discover the origins, growth and legacy of glass making in Sunderland. Using compelling personal stories from local people and striking audio visual display, this interactive exhibition traces the history of glass making in the City from the 7th Century to the present day. Did you know that many of the finest international artists working in glass have connections with Sunderland?

Did you know that Sunderland’s connection with glass dates back to 674 AD when Benedict Biscop brought French glaziers to Wearmouth to make the first known coloured glass window in the country?

Did you know that the banks of the River Wear were once lined with glassworks?

Did you know that all of the Pyrex glass sold across the British Commonwealth* was made in Sunderland until 1997? *with the exception of Canada

Main Gallery

Illuminating Colour: New Work by Cate Watkinson and Colin Rennie Saturday 21 October – Sunday 11 March 2018 Image: Concurrentes, 2017, Colin Rennie Image courtest of the artist

The exhibition provides an opportunity to explore the relationship between colour, light and glass. Robert Grosseteste (Bishop of Lincoln 1235-1253) has been described as ‘The greatest mind you’ve never heard of’. Scientists, historians and artists from the Universities of Oxford, Durham and Sunderland have worked together to explore Grosseteste’s theories on light and colour culminating in this exhibition of new work created by Cate Watkinson and Colin Rennie. Artworks creating colour using only glass and light are shown alongside others using digital technology, allowing visitors to interact with and alter the nature of the works.

As part of a new exhibition that offers an initial glimpse into the first works

acquired for these permanent collections, we are showing Chris Cornish’s astonishing digital animation The Adventure and the Resolution. Cornish presents us with a breathtaking illusion in which we encounter ‘smoke and mirrors’ in quite unexpected ways.
