The Looney Lutherans in Young(ish) at Heart

An Evening with C.S. Lewis

A trio of wacky gals who use music, comedy and help from the audience to share their tips for aging humorously. This interactive comedy event includes the game show What’s In Your Lunchbox? (hosted by your favorite luncheon meat), musical advice for dealing with those aches and pains and creative tips for keeping fit, because Jello isn’t the only thing that jiggles. Material is comedic and family friendly, and you don’t have to be Lutheran to love it. Getting older may be a “pain in the neck” but laughter is good medicine. Celebrate being “young(ish) at heart” with the Looney Lutherans. Tickets: $30 for 1pm shows, $38 for all other performances, available at the John & Betty Adamich box office at the Ames Center, 800-982-2787 or at ticketmaster.com. Group discounts available for groups of 10 or more.

The year is 1963 and C.S. Lewis, the famous British author, is hosting a group of American writers at his home near Oxford. They are about to experience a captivating evening with a man whose engaging conversation and spontaneous humor made him one of the great raconteurs of his day. Seated in his living room and in front of a warm fire he recalls the people and events that inspired his thought and shaped his life – of his friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien, why he nearly abandoned the Chronicles of Narnia, how he came to embrace Christianity and of the American woman who turned his life upside down. Described by critics as ‘Extraordinary!’ ‘A Must See!’ ‘A Master Class!’ An Evening with C.S. Lewis has proved again and again to be an enthralling theatrical experience and one which has led many thousands to discover (or rediscover) the continuing impact of a man who died more than 50 years ago and whose collected works made him one of the literary giants of the 20th Century. Tickets: $60, available at the Ames Center Box Office, 800-982-2787 or ticketmaster.com.

LIVING IN HARMONY WITH

Seasonal Rhythms

Carly Crombie

Autumn has arrived, and as the daylight hours dwindle and temperatures begin to drop, we can all feel the changing of the season upon us. This is a time to give thanks for the Summer sun and to pay tribute to the coming darkness. These are the moments to look at our lives and take stock of what is needed to sustain us in the colder months to come, while also honoring all that’s been provided to us this far. We have just journeyed through the Autumn Equinox, experiencing the beauty of balance that it represents, as well as the tipping point in our journey towards Winter.

Autumn. Nourishing foods, high in protein and (good) fats, that are brought to life with warming, stimulating spices and served hot, will go a long way toward maintaining your internal fire and keeping you grounded through the season. This time of year is also a potent period to build resilient immune systems to prepare for the tough Winter. There are some powerful medicines, native to this region, that you should get to know. Elderberry syrup and FireCider (made with local garlic and honey) are especially helpful as we begin to cozy up more and share space/germs.

There are many ways to care for ourselves and others in these times of seasonal change. Diet is a powerful way to support the transition into

Developing healthy seasonal routines can also be a very supportive pillar during these transitions. Time begins to be spent differently as

Wine Tasting • 3-6pm

Frothy Band • 7pm

This Week: Boxed Wine. Boxed wines have come a long way over the past two decades. They create the best environment for wine after opening, letting in neither air nor light to acidify the wine. This combination gives a longevity to boxed wines that bottles have never managed to duplicate. Winemakers are realizing this and experimenting with better and better wines. Do your part to fight the boxed wine stigma and see just how good the wines inside can be and how good a value it is to buy wines by the box. Tastings are free and open to anyone over 21.

The Frothy Band is Laura MacKenzie, Matt and Paul Wehling, Mary Vanorny and Tom Klein. Affectionately combining the name of one of the greatest traditional Irish bands in history (The Bothy Band) with some finely-poured tap beers (producing froth) from Imminent Brewing, this collaboration brings you jigs, reels, hornpipes, songs and more played on flute, fiddle, mandolin, uilleann pipes and bouzouki.

10,000 Drops Craft Distillers, Faribault

Carleton welcomes the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra with Ruth Reinhardt conducting and Zachary Cohen, double bass. From Honegger’s sultry embrace of the summer dawn to Schubert’s effervescent Fifth Symphony, this vibrant music celebrates the bright flush of youth. Two trailblazers – Poland’s Grazyna Bacewicz from the last century and America’s own Missy Mazzoli, a millennial superstar – honor the resonant harmonies and lucid textures of Baroque masterpieces, as rendered in their vivid scores for stringed instruments. Ruth Reinhardt, hailed by The Seattle Times for her “incandescent talent,” leads this illuminating program. Unticketed, free and open to the public.
