Although it’s easy to set a wedding budget, it’s definitely harder to stick to it – but stick to it you must or you’ll be enjoying that year of eating beans! Unless you have unlimited funds (in which case, where’s our invite?!), this will mean some compromising on where the money goes. Sit down with
your partner and talk about the things that are most important to you, whether that’s the venue, food, entertainment, dress or honeymoon. List these in order of importance on your spreadsheet, then allocate how much you can afford to spend on each and focus on getting these sorted. If you’ve 100 per cent got your heart set on a particular photographer or band, book them quickly, before someone else does!

Planning a wedding is a big job – a pretty awesome, fun one, but a big one regardless. Don’t feel you and your partner have to take it all on yourselves. Remember that wedding crack team you assembled? They’re the perfect people to get involved. Whether it’s asking your bridesmaids over for a day of wedding DIY (provide wine and crisps to keep those workers going), or nominating the best man to put together a killer playlist for the reception – don’t be afraid to ask for their help. Family (and especially parents) will love to be involved in your wedding day, so delegate jobs to ease your load and make them feel involved. Two birds, one stone and all that.

One very important thing to remember is, when it comes to weddings, you’re never going to please everyone all the time. But that’s ok. This is your day and when it comes down to it, the only thing that matters is that you and your partner are doing things your own way. Maybe your mum isn’t happy that you’ve decided against a church service, or your sister-in-law is miffed her boyfriend of two weeks isn’t invited to the sit-down meal – don’t feel pressured into going back on your decisions just to please others. Hey, if you can find a compromise that keeps everyone happy then go for it, but don’t be afraid to stick to your guns.
ENJOY THE PROCESS
It sounds simple, but in the fog of planning, you can sometimes lose sight of what it’s all about. This is meant to be fun, so if it starts to feel overwhelming (i.e. you’re crying in the work loos over the wrong shade of ribbons being delivered), it’s time to take a break. A week of no wedding chat, a Pinterest ban and plenty of date nights will soon restore order. Remember, although the focus is all about planning an epic day with loved ones, it’s really about preparing to spend the rest of your life with the person you love more than anyone in the world. NOT A BAD VIEW FOR A PROPOSAL!
“I’m a keen runner and ran in 2013’s London Marathon. I always said to myself, if I got a place again, I would propose to Lis. Then in the autumn of 2013 I got a place in 2014’s race! I decided I would propose on the actual course where she would be watching, opposite Buckingham Palace and about 400m from the finish line. The day before, I gave the ring to my fatherin-law-to-be for safe keeping, so he could pass it to me just before I proposed. As I neared the end of the race, I spotted Lis and my supporters waiting on the side. My father-in-law-to-be passed me the ring without anyone seeing, then I stopped, got down on one knee and blurted out “Will you marry me?” Lis tearfully nodded and the crowd erupted into cheers. I even managed to finish the race!”

THE SANTORINI PROPOSAL ALAYNA AND CASEY “Casey’s proposal was like something out of a fairytale. I’d been dying to go to Santorini, Greece, for years, and as a wedding photographer, I wanted some special photos of us on the trip to treasure, so we set up a photo shoot for when we were there. Without me knowing, Casey contacted the photographer to tell him his plan to propose and
together they picked the perfect spot. Overlooking the cliffs of Santorini, Casey got down on one knee and told me he couldn’t spend another day without knowing I would be his wife; his forever. It still feels like a dream and I’m so thankful our photographer Aaron was there to capture it, so we can remember that moment for years to come.”

BECCA AND OLLIE “After spending a week with my family on the south coast of France, we were driving back in our camper van to the ferry. Little did I know that Ollie had planned to propose at the top of the highest sand dune in Europe, the Grande Dune du Pilat on the French west coast! We stopped at a campsite overlooking the dune and the sea, then set off to watch the sun set from the top. As I had absolutely no idea what he was planning, I got a little grumpy part way up the nearvertical 100m climb, but he insisted we went right to the top – and I’m so glad he did. As we watched the sun set from the peak, Ollie popped the question. I was so stunned I forgot to say yes for a good five minutes!”
THE SECRET CINEMA PROPOSAL LIANNE AND JAMES “To help pull off my proposal, I decided to call in the experts – The Proposers! The Asylum, a beautiful, derelict old chapel in Peckham made the perfect setting. I told Lianne and her friends we were going to a Secret Cinema event with a Hollywood Glam theme, so to dress the part. On the day I said I’d meet them there, but was really waiting behind the scenes. The Proposers helped organise 15 other ‘guests’ all dressed up, so Lianne wouldn’t get suspicious, and when
she got to the front of the queue she was told everyone must go in one-byone for the full experience – Lianne first. The church was decorated with candles and fairy lights, with an iPad in the middle of the floor with a button she was told to press. When she did, a video of clips of Disney films, Hollywood classics and me, lit up the wall. As it stopped, Desiree’s Kissing You started playing and two dancers came out and performed a piece, before I walked over to propose.”
THE NORTHERN LIGHTS PROPOSAL TAMSYN AND RICHARD “It was Christmas Day and as we sat down for dinner, there was a gift tag at my place, with a riddle about someone we knew. I answered the riddle and was handed another by my sister. Each time I got a riddle right it led me to another friend or family member – spanning all across the world. With the different time zones, it took three days in all to complete. The last clue led me to my Mum, where Richard was waiting with a kit list of things to pack – he was taking me on a
surprise trip to Lapland! We stayed at the Ice Hotel (a dream of mine), and one night when we we were walking across a frozen river the Aurora Borealis lit up the sky. When I looked across to Richard he was on one knee with a ring (my lategrandma’s engagement ring), asking me to marry him. Today our daughter Isabella carries on the memory, as her middle name is Aurora.”

DHYANA AND SAHIL “We’re from Canada, but my (now) fiancé, Dhyana, has always loved Jane Austen and English history, so when we decided to visit London it seemed like the perfect place to pop the question. The Proposers helped me organise a proposal at Syon House, where Emma was filmed. I told Dhyana we were going to an Austen gallery opening – as she entered the house I excused
myself to go to the bathroom, but instead sneaked off to get in place. Dhyana was guided to a room where a harpist was playing her favourite song. There were posters on the walls with quotes from Pride & Prejudice, then at the end an old copy of the book with “Will you marry me” written inside in calligraphy. When she spotted this, I walked in and popped the question!”

THE TOUR DE FRANCE PROPOSAL AMY AND TOM “For the 10 years we’ve been together I’ve always made out to Amy that I wasn’t bothered about getting married, so when it came to the proposal, she really was in shock! We both love Tour de France, so trying my luck, I sent an email to Sir Dave Brailsford, Team Sky’s principal, with my proposal idea. Unbelievably he got back to me straight away to say they would help make it happen. We came up with a plan to get the engagement ring to Chris Froome before the end of the tournament. I had

to jump over security fences to hand the ring over, all without Amy noticing (I just about managed it)! After Chris had won his fourth Tour de France, Ben Wright from Team Sky came over to us and said “Do you want to meet Chris?”. Amy was in total shock as Chris then passed me the ring box and said “I’ve been carrying this around with me for three weeks!” It was only when I got down on one knee that Amy clocked what was going on – and her shocked face has been captured forever on film!”
THE SCI-FI TREASURE HUNT JULIE AND PATRICK “I started planning the proposal nearly a year beforehand. I decided to create a sci-fi treasure hunt I created illustrations and clues and a guide book, then invites for Julie and two friends to take part in the ‘mission to find the missing power loop’. To start, I presented her with the book and the first clue, which would lead her to the next. Each of the seven locations were places that were special to us and the book of illustration, along with the ‘star map’, helped her solve the clues. The last one led her to me, waiting at one of her favourite cocktail bars. After a drink, I handed her the final clue, which was a star constellation chart. The clues (which she’d been instructed to bring with her) had pieces of constellation on them, so when stacked on the map it revealed the words “will you marry me?”. I got down on one knee in the middle of the bar, and she said yes!” PW

THE LEGAL BIT You and your fiancé must be at least 16 to be legally married. In England and Wales, if either of you is under 18 years of age, then you must have your parent or guardian’s permission. In Scotland you don’t need parental permission if you are over 18.
You must not be closely related to each other and you must both be free to marry. The marriage must take place in legal premises, such as a register office, religious venue or a licensed venue.
The marriage must take place in the presence of a registrar or official. Two witnesses must be present who are old enough to understand the ceremony.

1. CHURCH OF ENGLAND You may have to attend a number of Sunday services beforehand. The marriage can be authorised by calling banns on three consecutive Sundays three months before the day, or by obtaining a common licence. Church fees are from £456 in your home parish, with extra costs for choir, organ, etc. In Scotland, banns aren’t necessary, but 15 days’ notice must be given at a register office.
4. CIVIL CEREMONY Book your slot at a register office less than 12 months and more than 17 days in advance. You must have been resident in England/Wales for seven days before visiting your local registrar to give notice, and the fee is £35 each to give notice. A register office wedding costs £46. If the ceremony is held elsewhere, you’ll need to pay for a registrar to attend.

What is the difference between civil partnership and marriage? A: Apart from the wording and process of the actual ceremonies, the main differences come down to legalities. For example, civil partners do not have the same pension rights as married couples. Visit gov.uk for a detailed guide to the comparisons.
Can I convert my civil partnership to a marriage? A: Yes – you can visit your local register office for a straightforward conversion or have a ceremony at an approved venue with a registrar. Can same-sex couples have a church wedding? A: Yes, but only if the governing body of the religious organisation has opted in to consent of same-sex marriage, the individual minister is happy to conduct the marriage and the church itself is registered for same-sex ceremonies.
Which churches recognise same-sex weddings? A: The Jewish and Quaker churches offer same-sex ceremonies – you’ll just need to give notice to the register office 16 days before the ceremony. Same-sex weddings cannot currently take place in Anglican churches.

fter we got engaged, our lovely bridesmaid, Katie, suggested that we look at Elmore Court and we fell in love with it instantly as we drove through the gates we knew it was for us, and we agreed our wedding date after only seeing the ceremony room! The old house contrasts perfectly with the Gillyflower, a fantastically stylish, modern reception space that has been built specifically for parties… and we were definitely planning a party! Having been to lots of our friends’ amazing weddings over 30 in three years we knew that we wanted to make our day as personal as possible. We went for a pared-back, sophisticated look with lots of foliage, neutral colours, and heaps of candles, hanging tealight holders and lanterns. After struggling to find lanterns to hire, we decided to buy our own, which led us to set up our own hire business after the wedding Illuminer (illuminer.co.uk). We also made wooden place settings and cocktail stirrers, and for the favours our mums made flavoured gin and shortbread (as a nod to my Scottish roots). In the evening, we surprised our guests with an eight-piece New Orleansinspired band The New York Brass Band. Having watched them for years at Glastonbury, Kieran was so excited to see them and I think they left our reception with over 120 new fans! We couldn’t have wished for a better day.

y family moved to Spain seven years ago and I’ve always wanted to get married on a beach, so having our wedding abroad was an obvious choice for us. Our venue, the Puente Romano Beach Resort in Puerto Banus, was stunning, with lush gardens going down to the sea and an ancient Roman bridge that lights up at night. The sea views from the ceremony area were beautiful too. We love bright, bold colours but we also wanted to keep our wedding look as sophisticated as possible so that it was in keeping with the luxurious surroundings of the hotel. Our favourite colour is cobalt blue so we featured this shade in the suits, bridesmaid dresses, glassware and flowers. The effect was amazing. The flowers were really important to us. We wanted peonies and roses in bright

pinks and oranges to really stand out against my white dress and my maids’ dresses. To tie in the blue theme, we had blue delphiniums and cobalt blue ribbons for the bouquets. To personalise our day, we got crafty and made things ourselves including our favours, which were authentic Spanish tiles that I turned into coasters. I stamped the back of them with our names and wedding date, attached little rubber feet from eBay and tied name places to them with ribbon. It took a long time and was a real labour of love! On arrival, guests were given a signature cocktail. Anthony and I met in Strawberry Moons in London, so we created a signature cocktail called Luna De Fresa, which means Strawberry Moon in Spanish! It was, of course, Strawberry based… with lots of rum! Our guests were so impressed with everything and hearing them tell us what a wonderful time they were having made all of the planning worth it!

ooking our wedding ceremony was easy we knew we wanted to say our vows at the local church, a short walk from my parents’ house where I was christened and confirmed. Finding a reception venue was more tricky we looked at quite a few hotels and barns before finding Hundith Hill Hotel in Lorton vale. We were both blown away by the amazing views there. The look we wanted was quite rustic and vintage, which then led to our colour scheme of pastels. I’m not a crafty person, so when I came across styling company Wilde & Romantic (wildeandromantic.co.uk) it was a huge relief! They supplied us with a rustic table for the reception drinks, our table plan which was made from a vintage door, deck chairs, an old bicycle, bespoke signs and a vintage dressing table which was used to display our cake and cheese tower later in the evening. I chose an oversized wedding bouquet which consisted of white and pink avalanche roses, stocks, veronica, astible, rosemary, and eucalyptus and we had a gorgeous floral arch around the church door with large hydrangeas. The whole day was fantastic and guests loved all of the little unique touches. We had a prosecco reception in the church, a vintage photobooth and a caricaturist who provided lots of laughs! All of our suppliers were local too, which made it even more special.

y birthday is on New Year’s Day, so it was fitting that Henry proposed at midnight on New Year’s Eve. We were staying in a country cottage with friends in Kent we love this area and knew that we wanted to get married here too. When we came across the Old Kent Barn in Swingfield, it instantly felt like home and the natural light was beautiful. In keeping with the venue, we decided to go for a ‘cosy country’ feel, and chose a neutral colour scheme of ivory, cream and a hint of light blush. The look was classic and soft yet glamorous and romantic. We made the favours ourselves they were mini limoncello bottles which I added a gold ribbon to, and all our table names were local pubs in Chislehurst where we live. We hired an ivory cream postbox and light-up letters of our initials. Our invitations featured out initials too, so everything was matching. Our flowers were simple and elegant cream roses, ivy and lots of gypsophila interspersed with cream pillar candles. I loved the little posies tied to the chairs with ribbon for our outdoor ceremony

they looked so pretty blowing in the breeze! The blooming tulips in the venue’s spring flower beds also added some colour to the outside area. I felt amazing in my dress, it was elegant and classy and the bow reminded me of Audrey Hepburn so glamorous! I teamed it with a long veil to add impact. My bridesmaids wore nude dresses with net skirts that went perfectly with the whole theme. The evening do was brilliant and definitely my favourite part of the day, other than the ceremony. Our DJs got everyone in the mood for fun and we made sure everyone stayed on the dance floor by providing flip flops and providing a bar very close by! We served mini cones of fish and chips and pulled pork rolls with homemade coleslaw, which went down a treat. I felt every kind of emotion during the wedding and it’s true what they say – it really is the best day of your life!

e knew we wanted our wedding day to be formal yet relaxed and Froyle Park near Alton in Hampshire ticked all the boxes. It’s a stunning country manor house with a beautiful statement staircase which I knew would give me the ‘wow’ moment I wanted before I walked down the aisle. Our theme was an elegant blend of navy, white and gold, which went perfectly with the venue. I got most of my styling ideas from Pinterest, including our ‘cigar and whiskey trolley’ which I sourced from eBay. I bought decanters at car boot sales and styled them with navy ribbon to match our colour scheme. We also had a sweet table on an old dresser which I found on eBay. We styled it with old crates, books from charity shops and sweet jars from Ikea. My dad was a huge help with my creative plans, and made our framed table plan from an old map. My favourite part of the day was our ceremony I got to marry my best friend in front of everyone I loved and that felt amazing. My dad also made a special mention to my mum, who died 10 years ago, in his speech toasting her was a really emotional moment. During the meal, I surprised Andy and all our guests with The Singing Waiters. They really were fantastic and went down a storm we want them at all of our events now! It was the perfect day and I wouldn’t change a thing.

WHAT YOU NEED A VARIETY OF SPRAY CHRYSANTHEMUMS IN BRIGHT COLOURS (10-12 STEMS IN TOTAL) VARIEGATED IVY A SELECTION OF BRIGHTLY–COLOURED RIBBONS FLORIST WIRES FLORIST TAPE SCISSORS TAPE MEASURE
MAKE IT! Measure around your head with a tape measure and cut a piece of florist wire to size, then cover one end with florist tape and make a loop in it (A).
Next, using a pair of sharp scissors cut the stems of the flowers short (approximately two inches) then mount on florist wire by inserting a length up the stem of the flower. Repeat until all the flowers are mounted on florist wire. Next, cut a length of ivy to fit around your head. Wrap wire around one end and attach this to one end of the long wire you cut earlier. Leave the rest of the ivy loose to weave around the design at a later stage. Now take the mounted flowers and attach them in clusters to the
headdress, being sure to alternate the colours as you work along the length. Once the flowers are in place, weave the ivy throughout the design, using it to fill any gaps. Once you’ve completed your design, make a hook at the other end of the wire (B). This will form the back of the headdress and will be used to secure it together. For that final finishing touch, create a bow using different brightly coloured ribbons. To do this, take long lengths of ribbon and form a bow, then bend a wire in two to form a hairpin shape and insert through the middle before twisting to secure the bow (C). 1. Start with a plan If you’re thinking of making a backdrop, have a clear diagram with exact dimensions. Work out the quantity of flowers you need, then add another 10–20 per cent just in case you need spares. If making centrepieces, choose an arrangement at dimensions relative to your table setting. The arrangement shouldn’t be too high, so that guests can see each other while chatting.

2. Use the right paper The type and weight of paper used can really affect an arrangement. Make sure you read the instructions you’re following carefully and don’t cut corners. 3. Work in big batches Making a large number of flowers can be timeconsuming. To ensure efficiency, make things in large batches. For instance, cut all the petals at once, then cut all leaves, and so on. 4. Get as much help as you can Ask family and friends to help you out as you will need it. You’ll be surprised how much time you will save, and the fun you will have from working together. Plus, it makes everyone appreciate the decorations even more as they have contributed to making them.

Focus on what you can control – the end goal can seem a long way off! It helps to have weekly and daily process goals that will contribute to the end results. For example, you may decide to drink two litres of water per day, book three workout classes this week and swap cereal for eggs every day for breakfast. Afterwards, you have a short window to get protein into the body so this is the time to have a post-workout shake.

CHANGE YOUR HABITS These are the small things that you can do each day to make a difference, which when taken individually may seem insignificant. Four daily habits alone that will have a huge effect on your body composition, fast are: drinking a big glass of water with every meal; removing processed foods from your diet (pasta, bread, flour, sugar, meats, dairy, etc); eating three meals a day made up of natural

For most people, this is the time when they decide to quit. Don’t! Continue on with planning your weekly workouts but don’t stress if life gets in the way and you miss one or two. Just keep going and see it through!

ith the task of visiting three hotels in just one week, there was a point where I questioned exactly how relaxing my trip would be. However, ny worry I had swiftly ended as soon as I arrived at the beautful Skiathos Princess hotel, our first home for the week. This upscale hotel sits right on the beach, meaning we could literally roll out of bed and onto the golden sand each morning. Like the sound of trying cocktails under your own private gazebo? This can be arranged by the attentive staff who want to make sure your stay is as luxurious as possible. The two most prominent features of this hotel are the restaurants, which offer up fresh seafood, and the spa area, where you can book in for a lavish treatment. As well as making an ideal honeymoon destination, the hotel offers romantic ceremonies on the sand it would be a totally dreamy place to hold a destination wedding. A few days later, after a fun trip on the ferry (complete with dolphin sightings!), we arrived in Alonnissos to visit the second Sakintos resort, Marpunta Village. This hotel is quite

different from the Princess. All of the décor and buildings have a very traditional feel and are designed to look like a little village we were staying in a wonderful little white stone ‘house’, with the most beautiful view. My favourite feature? Definitely the tiny private stone beach which is located down a winding path beneath the hotel. After a few nights of total tranquility, it was back to Skiathos for our third and final stop the Aegean Suites. Now, if you’re looking for a couples-only resort, you can’t get much better than this. The hotel benefits from its small size in that the service is so personable. The staff would greet us by name every morning before breakfast it really is a home away from home.
