Archery has taken its place as a major sport in A.A.F. convalescent work. One means by convalescence, the more or less gradual return toward normal after a period of mental or physical disability. The approach to this aspect of need for medical care should be made with the realization that no medical history is complete until the story of the convalescent period is complete. A patient may have recovered from illness or injury but may still be unfit to assume routine duties of army or civilian life.

The aftermath of a period of hos­ pitalization is too often accompanied by moods of depression or of exagger­ ated self-importance, which is best combatted by a change of environment and an application of Recreational Therapy, involving association with others who are similarly in need of reparative and harmonizing guidance and stimulation.

The first phase of convalescent work is a business of retraining men who have lost the ability to run body ma­ chinery. The first step is to motivate patients to a more speedy recovery, and secondly to improve the range of mo­ tion back to normal and redevelop muscle tone. A concrete example of motivation and creating interest was the superb exhibition of trick and snap shooting by world famous Howard Hill, here on the base in person.

The medical officer in charge of orthopedics, after the examination of the patient, explains the problem he has to face and the range of motion for which he must strive, cause of disability and the prescribed time of treatment and the time to spend on it daily.

Common causes of disabilities to the shoulders are: sprain, dislocation, frac­ ture into the shoulder joint, fracture of collar bone, fracture below the shoul­ der joint, arthritis, acromio-clavicular separatiop.

Disabilities of the elbow are: sprain, fracture above elbow, fracture of the head of radius, dislocation, arthritis, myositis ossificans, and bursitis.

Disabilities of the wrist and fingers are: sprain, fracture of radius, frac­ ture of forearm, fracture of the small bones of wrist, arthritis, crushing in­ juries of hand, infection of hand and human bities.

The muscles chiefly employed in archery are middle and posterior del­ toid and supraspinatus. Trapezius pre­ vents the scapula from being rotated downward by the weight of arms. The extensiors triceps and anconeus work PAGE TWO

All the flexors and especially the flex­ ors of the elbow work when the string is drawn back sharply.

A protractor is used to measure the degree of normal or subnormal range of motion also the degree of improve­ ment.

The normal range of motion of the wrist are flexion (70) degrees, hyper­ extension (65) degrees, ulna (45), ra­ dial (35) degrees.

The elbow flexion (35) degrees, also the ability to supernate and pronate is at (180) degrees.

The arm flexion (90) degrees, ad­ duction (90) degrees, hyperextension (4 5) degrees.

Leg muscles are greatly improved in walking to and from targets.

In severe orthopedic cases a very light bow, twenty pounds pull, is used to shoot twenty-eight inch footed ar­ rows on a mat target twenty to thirty feet distance, here the basic principles of target work and snap shooting are taught.

Four good rules to follow are: (1) Talk as little as possible. (2) Know your subject well. (3) Don’t over do it. (4) Stop participation while there is still a desire to continue.

Long speeches of explanation become very boring.

The reason for knowing your subject well is in order to have a definite an­ swer for the thousands of odd ques­ tions. One mistake and you lose their respect which is essential for disci­ pline.

Don’t over do it, means not to have long drawn out contests as in normal play. Make competition short and never ask a man to participate if he has said no. He may have a good reason. A defeat may cause moods of depression which will defeat our purpose. The buddy system works well, in which one buddy shoots against his buddy or group of buddies. As a general rule they match up fairly well.

In some cases a few never seem to get enough, but experience teaches that over participation creates staleness and fatigue which again defeats our pur­ pose.

There is a wide diversity of methods in teaching adaptive sports in conva­ lescent work. Different courses have

been created for different purposes.

With this conception it may seem that convalescent work is more an expres­ sion of each individual instructor rather than a set system.

The second phase, that of normal reconditioning, differs a great deal from that of retraining, as these men can do almost as much as normal men.

First step is Explanation; (2) Dem­ onstration; (3) Participation; (4) Cor­ rection. Novices start at forty yards.

This may seem a bit far, but 1 can get good results and find a lot less damage to arrows and targets. When they shoot a fair average at forty yards they graduate into the bowman class.

This gives them an incentive to parti­ cipate and try to get into the expert class. It is really surprising the amount of improvement in a six week period.

On field trips it is not advisable to stay out longer than three hours. The amount of arrows lost creates quite a problem.

A few things that may not seem im­ portant, but an instructor should al­ ways help a new man put on finger and arm guards; they invariably put 0 Continued on Page Sixteen.

QUESTIONS and ANSWERS

Question: I am having trouble splic­ ing a pair of osage billets. I have used casein glue and have had them come apart twice. Would appreciate any sug­ gestion as to what might be wrong.

Would also like to know the best way to lay out a splice.

Answer: There are several things that might be the cause of your glue joints not holding. It may be that your glue is not good. Casein glue deter­ iorates when exposed to the air.

Your splice may not be fitted true enough. After you have the splice cut and fitted as good as you can, it is a good plan to but both halves of the joint in boiling water for about ten minutes; then drive them together and clamp tightly in the vise until they arc cool. Then, take apart and let dry be­ fore glueing. This will make a perfect fitting splice even though the sawing was not too good.

Casein glue for splicing osage should be made up thicker than the regular mix. I have found that a glue joint made in this way will dry strong enough to work in 2-1 hours, and to tiller in 4 8 hours, when I have my furnace going and the basement is warm and dry.

1 had a lot of trouble with splices in the summer time when the weather was damp. To overcome this, I made a box from Masonite and 3/4 by 2 inches white pine, 12 x 24 x 72 inches. This box has a door the whole length of it and is as nearly air tight as I can make it. Inside I have three 25-watt lights and a couple of pans of calcium chloride. The light bulbs hold the temp­ erature between 75 and 80 degrees and the calcium chloride absorbs the mois­ ture from the air. Since using this drying box, I have neved had a splice let go. It is also very effective for dry­ ing varnish on bows.

The accompanying sketch shows the three most common splices used in bow handles. The method of laying them out is about the same for all of them. Draw a center line on the end of the billet. Draw two cross lines the distance apart that you want the length of the splice. The dimensions shown on the sketch are the ones I use but they may be varied to suit ones individual taste. With a pair of sharp dividers lay out the points where the cuts are to end and connect these points with sharp pencil lines.

The double fishtail splice (A) has the largest glueing area and also the most fitting. The reversible splice (B) K — has the advantage that all the fitting can be done on the outside. This is the type I have always used.

The single fishtail is easily fitted but has the least glueing area of any of them. I have never used this splice but

it seems to hold for a great many bowyers. It must be particularly well fitted, with a good job of glueing.

Question: Will arrow spine break down after considerable shooting?

Answer: For the last several years I have kept a record of the spine, to­ gether with other data, of all the ar­ rows I have made. Checking some of these arrows that have been shot at least 1000 times, they do not show any more variations from their original test than would be caused from day to day by changes in temperature and humidity.

Question: Should a bow be rigid in the handle? Is a center shot bow prac­ tical?

Answer: A bow should be rigid in the handle. One that bends in the handle usually has a poor cast. This rigidity should not be carried out into the limbs beyond the dips (that portion of the bow where the handle blends into the limbs)..

A center shot bow is very practical but it has not been generally demon­ strated that they have enough advan­ tage over the conventional bow to make them popular with any great percentage of the archers.

Question: I have a silk backed lemonwood target bow which has developed a small crack in one limb. Is there any kind of a wrapping I can put on this to prevent it growing worse?

Answer: A wrapping over the bad spot should hold it from getting any worse. Loin sinew is really the best material for binding as it. is applied wet and when it dries, it shrinks and exerts a lot of pressure on the crack.

Unfortunately, sinew is not very nice looking on a target bow. A good tight wrapping of linen thread sot in fletch­ ing cement would probably hold it

OK. and not be as disfiguring as the sinew.

If you decide to use the ninew, order a piece of loin sinew from one of the advertisers in “Archery.” Tell them you want it for wrapping and ask them to send as long a piece as they have.

When you get it, pound it with a smooth faced hammer on a smooth wood block until it can be separated into shreds. Soak a few of these shreds (you probably will have enough to re­ pair several bows) in warm water un­ til they are very soft. Scrape the finish off the bow where the wrapping is to be applied. Coat with casein glue arid wrap with shreds of the sinew. Keep adding glue and sinew until you have the defect well covered. Put cn quite thick as the sinew shrinks as it dries and will only be about one half as thick as when it was wet. After the sinew has dried a couple of days, it can be smoothed up with sandpaper and varnished or shellacked.

OREGON TO OPEN RESERVE FOR BOW HUNTING Hunting for deer with bow and ar­ row will be permitted in Douglas coun­ ty. Oregon during the forthcoming sea­ son, according to the new game laws announced by the Oregon Fish and Game Commission.

That section of the Cow Creek re­ serve located east and north of Canyon creek having been opened by the game commission exclusively for archers.

The commission voted a special sea­ son on does in an area of 1000 square miles in central Oregon’s Fort Rock district, the season to run from De­ cember 1 through December 5, and an elk season from November 3 through November 2 5, except that no elk may be killed in the coast counties.

Archery in Europe

Our Editor expressed a wish that I send in any interesting sidelights on European archery which chanced across my path. As any archer will suspect, my path did a few zig-zag tricks, and eventually crossed the spoor of a crit­ ter known in these parts as "Champion Du Monde.”

Well, gents, that takes in a big hunk of territory, and I felt my hacklei go up when I thought of certain re­ spected gentlemen in my home stamping grounds.

A three-day leave furnished the time required to track this critter to his lair. The trail led first to a little su­ burb of Paris, called Le Bourget, and from there to the basement workshop of a keen-eyed little Frenchman by the name of Chariou—an expert with micrometers and calipers. As a sideline he turns out top-flight duraluminum bows; he is the sole representative of his species in France. Yes, he knew the quarry, having made most of his bows for him. An ambush was arranged for the following morning.

After an inexcusably respectable night in Paris, the trap was sprung, and I had the critter by the right fore­ paw. He turned out to be a fine animal, pelt prime condition, hair full and blonde and wavy, eyes steely grey and about twice normal size, height 5' 10", weight 17 0, broad of shoulder, deep of brisket, brawny of limb, and pos­ sessed of the name Roger Beday. From his teeth, I judged his age at about 31.

No archer will wonder how the day passed. The information which was gar­ nered has been condensed insofar as is possible, and is given below in state­ ment form, without benefit of conver­ sation.

First of all, and of particular interest to us field archers, is the fact that hunting with the bow is a sport prac­ tically unknown in Europe today, with the exception of Norway, where there is a half-hearted minority whose quarry is limited to rabbits and hares. Even here, archers who exhibit tendencies in this direction are considered somewhat subnormal. How would you like to live in Europe, fellow archer?

Archery in Europe is well organized —perhaps over-organized. There is a ■"Federation de Tireurs d’Arc,” which was organized about 193 0, and includes practically all archers in England, France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Czechoslo­ vakia and Switzerland.

There are two championships avail­ able—one for 50 meters distance, the other including all the other events.

In the 5 0 meter event, only 1 arrow is used by each archer throughout the contest. Each man shoots his pet ar­ row and then retires to the sidelines.

The next man stands in exactly the same spot. After the contestants have all shot, they walk in a group to the target, where results are scored much as we score our roving courses. The archer with the best shot in the target shoots first at the No. 2 target, and others take their turns in order down

the line. This No. 2 target stands just beside the spot where the archers stood when shooting at No. 1 target. The procedure is then repeated in reverse direction—and so on, until each of the contestants has shot 4 0 times. That’s a little more than 2600 yards, or about a mile and ?. half, which is considered a right smart bit of exercise in these parts.

The target used in this 50-meter event is 48" in diameter, but is marked differently than is our standard 48" face. For details of this target face see the table below. The scoring is just as would be expected, with this important exception; every arrow which strikes anywhere within the outer ring is given —in addition to its regular score value —an additional point, called an "honor point.” This struck me as a valuable idea, because it enables a man who has shot consistently in the target to win, as he should, over an opponent who has missed the target repeatedly, but has scored several lucky bullseyes. I believe this idea might well be considered for incorporation into our systems of scor­ ing.

The second type event is unbelievably complicated, involving varying numbers of arrows shot at four different types of targets, from five different distances, and in six different ways. No fooling!

Both events are held in all countries of the Federation during the early fall months, and results are certified and mailed to the Federation headquarters.

A Federation-issued booklet is sent once a year to all members, after the re­ sults are hi. That’s the extent of the archery publications. Praise Allah for men like Yount, Davis, Hoff, Michelson, Ruh—and the many others who have given us bow-bugs something really fine to read. Make no mistake about it—archery in our good old U.S.A, is as far ahead of archery over here as a Roadmaster Buick is ahead of a 1912 Ford, and it’s very largely due to the steady work and faith of men such as these.

Beday told me he was intrigued by the fact the Czechs usually won the 90 meter distance, England the 7 0 meter distance, and Belgium the 50 meter and shorter distances. So what does he do but pack up and visit all these coun­ tries, interviewing past and current champions, and trying to find out how come. He found out, and his perception and natural ability have paid dividends.

Here’s what he found: (a) In Czechoslovakia the 9 0 meter distance is especially concentrat­ ed upon, and their champs have hit upon a method of holding which allows point blank aim with a bow which is not too

Scoring is from 1 to 10, with an additional "honor point" for every arrow which strikes within the outer ring, as described above.

How would you Field Captains like the job of keeping that all straight in your heads, while keeping a weather eye on the field?

Note that the first division of the second type event is almost exactly the same as our York Round for men.

The age-old 50 meter event is still by far the more popular of the two. The present "Champion of the World" for this single distance is a Monsieur Assellin—also of France. The young fel­ low I met, Beday, has won the compli­ cated event every year since 1938 ex-

a bow which would just exactly give him point-blank aim at the 50 meter distance, using a high anchor point.

Note the important point, common to all these findings, the champs apparently consist­ ently use some device which puts their point of aim smack on the level of the target for 50 meter and longer events. Beday made proper note of all this and headed for home. (Photos on preceding page illustrate these examples).

It looked simple at first, he says, but there were complications. An injury damaged the sight of his left eye, which made it especially bad for him, because like our Larry Hughes he’s a southpaw.

You should see the draw he finally per­ fected! Left-handed, with the string drawn tight against his mouth and to the RIGHT side of his nose, and his head kinda cocked around the corner SO ]he can sight with his good right eye.

Here’s how he does it: For the 90 meter distances, he holds like the Czechs hold; for the 7 0 meter distances, like the English hold for that distance; for the 5 0 meter and shorter distances like we do in instinctive shooting in the States. This sounded like rank heresy to one who had been taught to hold exactly the same, come hell or a grizzly, but isn’t there an old saying concerning the matter of finding the proof in the pudding, or something?

Let’s head back to camp with a brief description of the tackle in common use over here. In order of the popu­ larity in France, bow materials stand thus: 1. Duraluminum—made exclusively

2. Fine steel*—made largely in Swe­ den.

3. Wood—usually laminated, and containing a dark wood called “ikmourette” from French Guiana, which looks very much like Amaranthe or Beef­ wood. The wood bows certainly do not stack up against the metal ones.

Good arrows are made almost exclu­ sively in Belgium. Beday imports all his best arrows from a U. S. fletcher near Chicago, whose name I have, un­ fortunately, forgotten.

A bow of 50 lbs. is a rarity in France, and probably in most of Europe. Most bows are between 35 and 45 lbs.

Neither Beday nor Chariou had ever even heard of flight-shooting, but when I explained how a great deal of our progress in design had been brought to light under this phase of the sport, they both swore they were going to try it.

You should have seen their faces when I told them about free-style flight, and lying on your back to shoot those great flight bows' I had taken along a couple of issues of our “Archery,” with their heart-racing pictures, and they prompt­ ly considered me one of the mighty deerslayers. I just hadn’t the heart to tell them the unhappy truth.

Late that night, back in a tent again, I rehashed the day in my mind, and one inescapable conclusion forced itself through the maze of facts and figures.

It’s this: There is one thing in par­ ticular which makes field archery thrill­ ing to every one of us Americans—it’s the fact that in our great forests and mountains and plains we’ve got lots of wild game, and that given real allweather sportsmanship and intelligent conversation that wonderful fact can be true forever.

Japanese Artillery—Ancient Style

This may be so—if the observer has any good idea what the picture is supposed to represent: if he believes the artist drew not too heavily upon his own imagination; or if, in the case of a photograph, he retains a vestige of the childish faith that holds a camera in­ capable of deception. Which faith the Hollywood boys have pretty well shaken!

The accompanying illustrations, re­ produced from unretouched photo­ graphs of articles of ancient Japanese artillery in the writer’s collection, pro­ vide a case in point. It is doubted that, without some explanation, they will convey ten thousand words-worth of impression, even to archers; and, hence, the remarks that follow: In view of the nature of our present rapproachement ’ with the Japs on their own home grounds, it may be of interest to consider some of their early notions about artillery—in that word’s original archery sense, that is. As all archers probably know, the traditional Japanese bow is today unique in that its upper limb is about twice the length of the lower one. This brings the grip (nigiri) between the lower and middle thirds of the bow’s length; and the interesting question is, why should this be thus?

In most things, including even their classic written characters (which they borrowed from the Chinese), the Japs have been mere copyists; yet, when we come to consider their bows, we find they have clung to an aboriginal design, possibly of their own contriving.

As to the origin of this design—or, indeed, as to the origin of the pro­ pulsive engine we call a bow, there is a prevalent and probably correct as­ sumption that it is not the outgrowth of a single discovery; but that, on the contrary, it is the result of independent invention in many and widely separated parts of the world; and that, in its earliest embodiment, it was no more than the slender stem of some fast­ growing, woody plant. The inevitable taper of such growth, when strung as a bow, would require the grip to be at approximately the position—relative to the length—which it still occupies in the Japanese bow of today.

Changes and improvements in the construction of this bow there have been, and these have had their effect upon its shape—both braced and un­ braced; but the location of the grip stays as it was when an aboriginal made a discovery which, in the hands of the Japs, was later to provide the foundation weapon of the great Samurai Warrior Tradition of Bushido (the spirit of benevolent warfare).

tion was at work; and Tradition called for a bow-grip to be where it always had been. And there it lias remained.

It was not that the Japs didn’t know of the short self-bow of the Ainu, whom they had conquered, or of the long-eared but otherwise relatively short bow of the Koreans, against whom they had sent many expeditions.

These they surely knew, as witness the fact that such bows were called by them han-kyu or half-length bows.

Moreover, a special type of composite short bow, said to have been intro­ duced to Nippon by a Korean named Ri Man, was called by the Nips Rimankyu (the bow of Ri Man). These short bows, with their grips at about mid­ length, were not in the Tradition, how­ ever, and are believed never to have been used by the Samurai either in battle or in Ceremonial Archery.

From all of this it would seem that there is much to support a theory that the Japanese bow of today, in its par­ ticular unique form if not in its con­ struction, is a direct and little-changed descendant of the aboriginal bow avail­ able to the earliest Sons of Heaven.

In conversational refutation of this theory of the origin of the classic Samurai weapon, a well-known Ameri­ can Archery authority3 referred to a copy of a Japanese painting—several hundred years old and showing a Sa­ murai warrior holding a club-of-a-bow by the center. Presumably, this picture may prove something; but it certainly fails to prove that a center-grip pre­ ceded the off-center-grip which, down through the centuries, has come to be a distinctive feature of the sacred weapon of the kyu-do, or the way of the bow.

Certainly, an ancient picture of a chicken would hardly prove that, in the beginning, there was a chicken but no egg—if only for the reason that, had the chicken been derived without benefit of egg, we should never have met up witii one. Not a hen’s egg, any­ way. Shoving the chick back into a shell to produce an egg is to evolute in reverse! The Japs may have been backward in evolving; but there is no evidence that they ever so far went into reverse as to abandon a center­ grip bow for an off-center one. The traditional Japanese bow, insofar as the location of its grip is concerned, is a fine imitation of the earliest con­ ceivable type of bow.

The present writer, when talking with an eminent student of Japanese antiquities, commented on the question­ able significance of the painting which was supposed to prove that the chick came before the egg, so tQ speak. Men­ tion was made of the gross license frequently taken by artists of bygone days and of the fact that, in Japanese prints of not over a century ago, the details of archery equipment left much to be desired; whereupon the anti­ quarian said, “Well, you see, in mat­ ters pertaining to Archery in the old days, the Japanese artist would have had to call rather heavily upon his imagination because he could hardly have been of such social standing as to be admitted to the company of Samurai archers.’’

All of which is to say that, whereas a picture may be worth 10,000 words, one doesn’t have to believe every last one of them. Turning.to the picture of the Jap “What’s ’is,’’ you are given three guess­ es. Maybe, the winged baton of state which Tojo planned to carry into the White House? No; try again. Well, there is Koiso, lately Premier, who is affectionately known to his admirers as “The Butcher of Korea,’’ who drinks like a fish and who believes in Archery —Nip style—as a spirit-building exer­ cise! Maybe, his device for stirring potable spirits with a little reminder of spirit-building kuy-do? Wrong again!

Believe it or not, this dainty little affair—including the tassel—is called te-ya (a hand arrow). It is said to have been made to use against an enemy as a dart or, at close quarters, in place of the mede-sashi (a dagger It had its place as a real weapon. It distinctly was not what you guessed last; not that is, a tournament trophy conceived in some fletcher’s nightmare. c The over-all length of this particu­ lar te-ya is twenty inches, exclusive of the tassel (which is the best little feather-rumpler imaginable). The shaftment under the fletching is lacquered in gold, and the ends of the feathers— fore and aft—are bound down with a wrapping of fine rattan, lacquered Chinese red. The formidable ivory nock is such as no man could loose; and the business end of steel is actually thicker and wider just back of its ex­ tremity than anywhere else. The blade is one inch wide and three-eighths of an inch thick near the end, and fiveeighths by one-quarter inch at the thinnest part. Side-edge on, it reminds one of the bulbous underwater prow of a battleship.

In the American Museum of Natural History there is a prehistoric Japanese iron arrowhead of the same shape as that of the te-ya in the illustration—

except for being somewhat shorter.

From this fact, the writer would judge that this shape is traditional.

The scabbard, used to cover the blade, was made a full two inches longer than was necessary to sheath its steel. This plain, black-lacquered, businesslike covering seems, by its size and shape, to proclaim that it houses a really vicious snickersnee.5 Maybe the bearer of this weapon hoped that the general effect upon its beholder would be such as to mercifully scare him to death, and thus avoid messiness.

Certainly, the whole affair—if vigorous­ ly twirled by its tasseled lanyard— would function nicely as a howling bullroarer; and, legend notwithstand­ ing, that may be how it was used.

At any rate, the Japanese dictionary, Baijiten, has a good illustration of a similar te-ya, which picture this writer could read at a glance! Beyond the in­ formation acquired from this picture with the greatest ease, all reference to past use is hearsay; and, hence, all this writer can be sure of is that some­ body—after a whole lot of fine work— had the makings of a mammoth arrow.

Only thing is, he seems to have pretty much run out of shaft! But even so, why the infernal tassel?

For that matter, why the little hunchbacked bows of? the other illustration? That they are of Japanese origin is clearly indicated by their shape, even though this is far from the classical tradition.

Don't make the mistake of thinking these little twenty-one-inch bows and fifteen-inch arrows were intended to be 5 A fighting knife used by Dutch sailors in olden days. The first archer to attain the phe­ nominal score of 700 over a 56-target roving course was Phil Conrad, who now is a Chief Petty Officer in the Navy. Phil will always stand out in my estimation as one of the greatest field archers who ever shot a bow. His natural instinct for estimating distances was amply demonstrated in our 1941 State Championships. Due to the long distances necessary to travel to a match in either northern or southern Califor­ nia, this particular state tournament was held in Fresno. There was no club in Fresno so the state association built a regulation roving course especially for the matches. No practice was al­ lowed before the shoot and all com­ petitors entered the competition on a strange course. Phil won this state championship with a score of 711, over a course he bad never seen before.

I shall try to answer them, not as an authority on how to shoot a bow, but from observations taken over a long period of association and competition with the top ranking California archers.

There may be many contributing fac­ tors, but the answer can be summed up to one condition—the weather. Of course, in making this statement I realize it will sound as if I were a member of the local Chamber of Com-

Practice makes perfect, and it follows that if one group can get out on the range at least once and maybe two or three times, month in and month out, it is certainly going to have a dis­ tinct advantage over the group that may shoot occasionally during the sum­ mer and then lay aside its bows during the winter. The predominantly good weather inclines many people toward archery as a sport and this may ac­ count for the large size of the Southern California clubs. Large clubs tend to bring high scores in the top brackets.

In the Los Angeles area there are two clubs, Malibu and Pasadena. A great many of the local archers are members of both clubs and participate once a month in each of their respec­ tive club’s monthly shoots.

Next in importance is the style of shooting used by Californians, which in general is different from that which

Without attempting a detailed dis­ cussion of style, we may note certain striking features of the California man­ ner. An outsider shooting with us would first notice an absence of all strained postures. Ease and gracefulness are cul­ tivated by all California archers and naturalness of form is achieved by all the best scorers without exception.

In the accompanying photographs your attention is called to one particu­ lar characteristic predominating among California archers, and that is the stiff, straight bow arm and a firm grip on the bow handle. Don’t interpret this to mean that an effort should be made to grip the bow handle as tightly as pos­ sible. This would only cause undue strain and fatigue. Just hold the bow securely and you will have far better control of it than if it is held loosely.

If, in trying this style of shooting, you find the bowstring striking your armguard unnecessarily, take a new grip on the handle so that the pull is more nearly exerted against the big

thumb knuckle. This will allow the string to pass and will do a great deal to eliminate the arrow slapping the bow. In this grip the bow hand is twisted more or less so as to bring the wrist a little farther away from the line of the string, but no twist whatever is imposed on the bow itself— the bow remains lined up straight with the target.

There is another point of form that may be of interest and that is the method of anchoring. In target tech­ nique the head is held upright and the thumb of the hand holding the ar­ row is often held upright against the cheekbone and the string brought to a point in the center of the chin or chin and nose or along the side of the mouth. The more usual roving form of anchor varies from this because the bow is usually tilted. A solid point of anchor is very necessary and is obtain­ ed by bending the thumb down toward the palm of the hand. This forms a sharp V of the bones of the thumb and forefinger. at some point on the bones of the face.

In a high anchor, the V is wedged over the cheekbone. In a medium an­ chor it is placed between the cheek and jawbones. In a low anchor it is wedged over the jawbone. In any case there is a solid contact between the bones of the hand and those of the face.

This type iof anchor generally re­ quires a slight tilting of the head to obtain a good view of the target over 11. „ _____ 1 the slanting bow. One eye is almost directly behind the string but both eyes are always open.

Holding the arrow on the target for a second or two is a big factor in high scoring. Seldom do we see a Cali­ fornia archer, man or woman, snap­ shoot. They all come to full draw and then hold momentarily, anywhere from one to three or four seconds, before releasing. This gives added concentra­ tion on the target and insures proper alignment and elevation before re­ leasing. Another advantage holding has over snap-shooting is that the archer can make certain that his arrow is fully drawn and anchored in exactly the same spot each time.

Now we come to the tackle angle.

Handles of this type fit the hand more perfectly and give better control in aligning and holding the bow on the target. The rest is mainly a protection against the feather cutting or slivering into the bow hand. It also insures that the arrow starts always from the same place, which is just as important as nocking at precisely the same point on the string.

There is no question, generally speak­ ing, but what California archers use lighter tackle, bows as well as arrows, than do archers in the East. Especially is this true as compared to Michigan and Wisconsin archers. Of course there are a few California archers who shoot bows of 60 pounds or more, but only two or three have recorded scores above 600. Tiny Munson is one archer who shoots a heavy bow and high scores, yet his arrows are of 5/16" dural, perfectly matched in weight and spine. The exact weight of each shaft is 410 grains.

Indiana State Field Meet The Indiana State Championship Field Meet will be held on September 9th. Registration 8:30 a.m. Target fee $1.00 This will be the first official state wide field meet. The holding of this meet will serve a dual purpose by de­ ciding a state champion and organizing a state field association.

The tournament will be held on the Fort Wayne Archery Club field range, which is located in a beautiful wooded section of Franke Park. This range complies with the official National Field Archery Association.

Trophies will be awarded for first place in each class. After the awards are presented a state field association will be formed followed by a banquet.

Comdr. Frank Latta Missing The Navy has reported the loss of the submarine Lagarto on war patrol.

The Lagarto was commanded by Com­ mander Frank de Vere Latta, 34, a native of Indianapolis, who is reported missing.

Commander Latta, before the war, was an ardent archer and was well known in archery circles. He had often written hunting stories for Ye Sylvan Archer.

Flight Rules for Broadhead and Roving Tackle During the month of September the nationwide flight shoot will be held and the following rules will apply to broadhead and roving tackle events: Broadheads: Minimum weight shall be 4 3S grains (1 oz.) for men; 328 grains (3/4 oz.) for women. The blades shall be not less than 7/8 of an inch across, with feathers not less than four inches long and of normal height.

Roving arrows are those commonly used on a roving course, unaltered as to fletching and in general make-up. ..-.’ll - --------- J Bows will be those commonly used in the division designated. More than one bow may be qualified for any event, provided no more than six ar­ rows are cast.

The distance of flight shall be de­ termined by measurement at the point on the central line where a line at ex­ actly right angles to the central line intersects arrow’s position. An arrow lying flat on the ground is to be meas­ ured from the tip.

Emil Ott, executive secretary of the Division of Fish & Game, explained that the law setting up a 10-day sea­ son for the taking of deer with bow and arrow won’t take effect until Sept.

15, ninety days after the adjournment of the legislature. The regular gun season opens Sept. 16 in the Sierras so this will allow but one free day for bow and arrow hunters.

Ott added, however, that bow and arrow hunters may take their chances with others hunters up until Sept. 16 in districts with earlier open seasons.

After the 15th taking of deer with bow and arrow will be prohibited until next year. At that time there will be three 10-day pre-seasons, depending upon what part of the state is to be hunted.

Different parts of the state have dif ferent opening dates for hunting.

Cornell Bowmen Hold Fifth

Annual Fall Hunter’s Meet The Cornell Bowmen will play host to the North Central Fall Hunter’s Meet on September 16th on its fine 28 target official field course, located ad­ jacent to the famous Brunet Island State Park.

Here is Wisconsin’s finest official course, laid out on the banks of the world famous Chippewa River, home of the fighting tiger musky.

Events will include flight and clout shooting, and Cornell’s own well known trap shoot, in addition to a round of 28 targets on the field course.

Prizes will include gold medals, a grand championship prize, besides ar­ ticles of archery equipment for special events.

This is the fifth of these meets and now that gasoline rationing has ended expectations are for the largest gath­ ering ever.

There will be events for men, women and juniors. Shooting will start at 10 a.m.

CANADIAN ARCHERY ACTIVITIES

By WILLIAM MAC DONALD Most hunting seasons are fast ap­ proaching as this month’s page goes to print. Several of the fellows we know are switching or have switched to their hunting bows and arrows, and are putting in regular practice with these on their field courses. There has been talk of some scrambling for proper material for broadheads, but everyone we know seems to have acquired suf­ ficient for his own needs.

This year, as last, several members of the Hunting & Field Archers of Ontario are going to Blyth Township for their hunt. One party will be camp­ ing there during the first two weeks of November, which is the last two weeks of the deer hunting season in that district, and there will no doubt be others. Last year most of the boys hunted during the first two weeks of the season, but the warm weather and lack of snow was against them. It is hoped that, by making the trip two weeks later this year, these conditions will be overcome. However, the camp this year will again be in tents, so, for those of us who are a little soft, we hope it doesn’t get too cold.

Wherever you hunt this year, be it in Ontario, British Columbia or Ore­ gon, we wish all our readers the best of luck. And whatever you do, take a leaf from the writer’s book and always be sure you have your compass along.

We really must tell you about that ex­ perience sometime. We can say here and now, to be very short about it, that being lost in the bush is no fun at the time, even though we laugh about it now.

The H. & F. A. of O. mail shoot of July 15th was rained out throughout the province, and all competitors were allowed to shoot the following week­ end. The number who mailed in their scores was very disappointing, and it cannot be said that the shoot was a success from that standpoint. However, some scores recorded showed marked improvement for certain individuals, though some of the older archers seem­ ed to hit a slump. The winning scores as recorded were: Men, C. Kofmel, 1st, score 381; Bill Macdonald, 2nd, 306.

Hunting class: Ken McClelland Jr., 1st, score 240; John VanEvery, 2nd, 217. Ladies: Madge Mitchele, 1st, 241; Mrs. M. Kofmel, 2nd, 218.

A glance at these scores and those recorded by members of the NFAA shows a great discrepancy. Where the reason lies is hard to say. Most of the Ontario archers shoot with the aid of sights, but surely they are not as in­ ferior to American archers as the scores would lead us to believe. Several of the Ontario boys have won the Art Young Big Game Award, and winning

that takes a steady hand and true eye to say the least. Probably the only way this question will be settled will be to have a visit on an Ontario field course from some of our friends across the border. As soon as tires and gasoline become more plentiful, some arrange­ ment should be reached between two clubs so that we may be able to have a better understanding of why our neighbors get higher scores than we.

The Hunting & Field Archers of Ontario have two new members in the Yukon Territory, both boys serving in the R.C.A.F. F/Sgt. Bob Compton, whose home is in Ontario, wrote us a letter on this letterhead and we thought it so good that we should pass it on to you. Later on. a pal of Bob’s, Sgt. Alec Philips, also wrote.

Bob Compton, in his second letter, says that he has succeeded in getting considerable interest shown in archery on the station at Watson Lake. Tackle lias been ordered by several of the boys and soon a club will be functioning on a strong basis. It is great to know that the sport we all enjoy can be played by the boys iu the services, especially by those who are stationed in places out of touch generally with the rest of the sporting world.

Though they are stationed where the average person would think shoot­ ing a deer or moose would be a matter of twenty minutes walk and two or three shots, allowing for misses, that is. Bob says that the big game lias been driven far back into the bush.

He says further that it is unlikely that any of the boys there will get a deer or other big game this year be­ cause of that fact and because two day passes are not given on the station.

However, he is going to see what can be done and will keep us posted. This magazine is delivered regularly to some of the boys at Watson Lake, and Bob says they look forward to it eaclt month.

President Gwen Edwards of the North Bay Archery Club reports that the club sponsored a dance with great success. The club netted almost $150 after all expenses were paid, and a good time was had by all. Nine members of the Temiskaming Club came over to North Bay for the dance. If your club is in need of funds, and you happen to be in one of the smaller cities or towns, this might be worth a thought to you.

When Gwen first broached her plan, there were some misgivings among the club members, but she has proven that she was right.

Our prediction that when the Temiskaming Archery Club shot the North Bay field course they would build a field course of their own. has come true. Secretary Floyd McKay says the Temiskaming boys visited North Bay and, as he put it. “we came, we shot and now we are building.” The terrain available to Temiskaming should allow for a field course deluxe.

Northern Illinois Field Championship Sept. 16

The Lombard Archers have scheduled a Northern Illinois Field Archery Cham­ pionship at their range on the 16th of September. The range is located 30 miles west of Chicago’s loop on Route 53, five miles south of Route 34. Tro­ phies will be awarded winners in both the men’s and ladies division; also medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd in both divisions. Shooting will start at 9:30 a.m. with picnic lunch at noon.

For the morning round archers will be assigned in groups by the starter and by scores in the afternoon round.

All archers in or out of state are in­ vited to participate.

Archery’s Part in the Convalescent Program

Harvey Stephens, stationed in India tells us of Indian bows as follows: “Have seen several types of Indian bows.

They are all of bamboo. The bow itself is made out of about 1/2" thick bamboo tapered down on each end. They don’t use any recurve or reflex bows. They have a pull from thirty to fifty pounds. The strings are even bamboo woven some way and the arrows are bamboo, some have blunts and some iron broadheads. They aren't too accurate.

The people that mostly use them are low class plains In­ dians. They hunt birds, rabbits, wild boar and jackles and small mouse deer. I might get to do some big game hunting in the near future.”

The Detroit Archers have donated twenty complete sets of archery tackle for the Percy Jones Veterans Convalescent Hospital at Battle Creek, Michigan. Fred Bear has con­ tacted Major Glen C. Thompson, Chief of the recondition­ ing staff and plans are laid for incorporating archery in the reconditioning program. Nine archery butts have al­ ready been built. They are proceeding with a publicity program which includes the showing of archery films, and will be climaxed with an archery show on August 23rd.

Archers from Detroit and other cities will put on a shoot­ ing exhibition followed by archery instructions. Michigan archers and clubs are asked to donate bows from thirtyfive to fifty pounds, arrows and other equipment. Archers in the vicinity of Battle Creek will assist in training the staff at the Hospital and follow up with weekly meetings.

The offer of the Michigan Archers to assist in the Recon­ ditioning Program was enthusiastically and gratefully re­ ceived by the Hospital Staff. We cannot impress too strong­ ly on our archers and clubs how important a part archery can play in the physical reconditioning program for con­ valescent veterans, and it is our patriotic duty to offer our services in this worthwhile cause. If your club is not par­ ticipating in this program, we urge that you contact your nearest veterans hospital at once and offer your services.

In this issue are published the rules for the Flight Tournament for roving and hunting tackle. Suitable awards will be made by the NFAA. Why not enter in the mail tournament and find out how your tackle stacks up ■with others. Flight tournaments are valuable in checking on the efficiency of bows and arrows and results in gradual improvement of tackle.

There is a new fourteen target field course at Fort Benning, Georgia. Atlanta Archers are invited to get ac­ quainted with the service men and try their course. The Recreation Department of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, has built a public field course called the Seven Elms Field Range.

It is official and the construction was under the super­ vision of the LaCrosse Archery Club, H. C. Reuter, Sec'y.

Richard Navratail, flight officer, is in charge of arch­ ery at Truax Field, Madison, Wisconsin. Archery is being enthusiastically received by service men.

Mrs. Myrtle K. Miller writes of the Tella-Wooket Archery Camp: “We had a splendid week at June camp.

The weather was perfect and with the Hickmans, Klopstegs.

Naglers and Dr. Elmer there you can be sure there wasn't a dull moment. The week was full of fun and laughter and gayety in spite of the serious shooting and hard work on the part of the Normal Course students. There were almost fifty archers present and Fall Camp looks as if it will even be larger. Dr. W. B. Wescott again plans to be with us in the fall.”

As this is being written we are celebrating "V-J Day.” With gas rationing ended, this coming fall hunt will be the biggest our archers have ever experienced. Our thoughts also turn to the First Annual National Tournament of the NFAA, where our archers from East and West, North and South can really get together, meet each other personally, and competition over the same field course. It looks now as if 1946 will be the year. Bids for the first National Tournament are on file from Salt Lake Cltv, Utah and Al­ legan, Michigan. Bids from other cities w'ill be accepted Plans for the tournament will be formulated this winter and announced far enough in advance so you can plan on attending. The Executive Committee of the NFAA probably will take an advisory vote of the membership as to where the first National Tournament should be held.

The end of the war will be followed by a great in­ crease in participation in all sports, especially bv our re­ turning service men. Archery should be prepared to take advantage of this sports interest. Local clubs should have

active publicity committees to see that your club activities get proper newspaper publicity through stories and pic­ tures. Make your field course available to archers returning from service as well as to others interested in taking up the sport. Archery can be one of the major sports it you will do your part to help put it there.
