indoor nationals returns to louisville LOUISVILLE,KY - After 3-years in Cincinnati, Ohio, the NFAA Indoor National Championships will return to the newly renovated Kentucky International Convention Center (KICC) March 20-22, 2020. The NFAA Indoor Nationals brings together the top NFAA archers from around the U.S. to shoot the iconic 5 spot, blue and white face. The tournament, now in its 40th year, was started in 1980 in Omaha, NE with just 500 attendees. The 2020 event also features a Team ProAm, Meet the Pros, the Scholastic 3D (S3DA) Indoor National Champions, and the finals of the USA Archery Indoor Nationals. The events are expected to total over 3,500 archers. The defending professional champions of the NFAA Indoor Nationals are Stephan Hansen, Paige Pearce, Keith Trail, Debra Ochs and Dee Wilde. A total prize fund of nearly $60,000 is available in Louisville, with $10,000 paid out to the winner of the freestyle professional male category. SCORING Archers shoot the NFAA 300 Indoor Round at a blue and white target face. It’s the archer’s choice between a single- or five-spot, but everyone shoots 60 arrows – 12 ends of five – for a maximum of 300 points per round. Most targets are set at 20 yards; cubs aged 11 and under shoot over 10 yards. Each shooting line has two ends of practice before scoring begins; halfway through the round, archers switch their targets from top to bottom, or vice versa, on the target butt. Everybody shoots for two days at the NFAA Indoor Nationals, one NFAA 300 round each day, and a clean score for the weekend is 600 points with 120Xs. In the professional divisions, ties for first, second and third place are determined by shoot off immediately after the last shooting

line. The shoot-off starts with one practice end, followed by one end where only the X-ring sores five points – and then sudden-death scoring where only inside-out shafts in the X-ring score five until a winner is decided. In the non-professional junior, adult and senior divisions, only ties for first place are determined by shoot off, using the same format as the professional divisions. Joan got her first California buck with her bow just a few years after their marriage thus solidifying this union as an outdoor family. In 1976, Joe became an Instructor with the Bowhunter Education Program, then in 1977, when the California Division of Fish & Wildlife added archery to their Hunter Safety Course he was asked to become an Instructor for them. Because Joan was always involved in helping Joe during his classes, she became very familiar with the material and the class presentations. Subsequently, Joan was asked to become an instructor herself the mid 80’s. Joe & Joan became a husband and wife teaching team everywhere a Hunter’s Ed Class or Bowhunter Education Program class was held. They continued donating their time and knowledge, not only as instructors, but also for NBEF, NFAA, USA Archery, NASP. Joe, at the same time was volunteering with the NRA. In 1992, the CBH/SAA California Hall of Fame (CAHOF) Committee inducted Joe into the CAHOF. Then in 2010, the Hall of Fame Committee chose to honor Joan and inducted her into the CAHOF. know that there are many young people who are exceptional archers. The first Outdoor Nationals I attended was at Watkins Glenn where I came in second. Later, in 1996, I won the Master Senior Division in Darrington WA. My first trip to The Vegas Shoot was in 1972, I tied for second with a few others because I dropped one arrow. I served as the State Director for Washington state 1972 and 1973.

I was a GM3 in the Navy serving in Korea from 1952 through May 1953, when several of us received an R&R [rest and relaxation/recreation] near Mt. Fuji Japan. While I was there, I shot a long-bow for the first time- and that got me started! After I was discharged, a friend and I went rifle hunting at Convict Lake on the east slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. We were about a mile from the lake when a hunter shot at us three times. He had to be a long way off. Two shots between our legs and one by my ear- not much fun- I decided then to try hunting with a bow and arrow. Back then arrows were made of cedar and not very straight. Same for aluminum shafts. About two years later I purchased a gorgeous laminated recurve bow made by Apache from the Kittredge Bow Hut. After joining my first club, the Pasadena Archers, I got to meet several well known archers including Jim Dougharty, Jack Howard, Howard Hill, and Jim Easton. Back then they had a target group, field class, and a class called Sagittarius, broadhead only. In the 1950s and 60s I shot the field round with no sights and arrows that were straightened by hand. Once sights were allowed the game really changed! Around 1972, ledge releases came into the forefront and changed the game again. Watching the transition in this sport from wood long-bows to current compounds; wood arrows to carbon and aluminum arrows; smaller, shorter, and faster bows. Today I

Currently I live in Las Vegas, NV. The University of Nevada, Las Vegas contacted me about teaching an archery class, and so I taught there for three and a half years. Classes were usually 12-15 students and it was great! During my last class I gave away five compound bows, that I had adjusted to each archer, a great feeling. After I retired, I went to work for PSE for six and a half years. Prior to that I was a staff shooter for PSE. I have hunted most all of the western states including Alaska and Canada. Not always successful but enjoyed all of it. My wife was a State Target Champion in Washington State, and my son Ken placed 2nd in the Young Adult Division behind Terry Ragsdale at a National and State Field Championship in California. Most of my accomplishments in archery are with Washington State, but my first four in California were with a York [bow] (most people today do not know what a York is!), that 72 arrows at 100 yards, 48 at 80 and 24 at 60. I hold 2 national titles, 24 state, 4 sectionals, 3 internationals, and 1 world in Darrington Washington.

I did well with archery until I developed “it” as it was called then now it’s called “target panic”. I fought this reflex reaction from 1963, until a friend suggested that since I’m a natural lefty, I should shoot left-handed and close the right eye when shooting. I did and have been shooting left-handed since 1965. Now, if I feel a problem developing, I stop shooting for several days and then practice drawing, holding, and letting down. Finally, the problem smooths out. I haven’t had any serious problems since.

My parents divorced when I was three years old, and from then until I was fifteen, Uncle Fred and Aunt Jessie Bell Durbon reared me. Uncle Fred was a ranch hand with a second grade education, but knew cattle, horses, and ranching. Also, he was honest, and if he gave his word, you could bet he’d keep it. We lived on the Finley Ranch in Texas, in a shack that you could throw a cat through the walls; hot in the summer and cold in the winter; no restroom facilities; no plumbing! We were poor and didn’t know it, but we were happy.

Aside from target archery, I never forgot hunting, especially hunting with a bow. This started on the Finlay Ranch- where I used a homemade bow from a peeled and dried mesquite limb and the woody stems of broom weeds for shafts. The bow and shafts were dried between two wooden planks for a week. I notched each end of the bow and strung it with cotton string. I cut a shallow groove in one end of the shafts for nocking an arrow. Next, I cut the heads off of small nails and drove them half their length of the nail into each shaft. Last, I tightly wrapped test fishing line around the shaft just above each nail to prevent splitting the shaft. No feathers were used. I wouldn’t need them when I dug out pack rats from their nests in the prickly pear cactus. Most of the shots were less than ten feet. If I missed - which was often - Sudi, my favorite cow dog, would catch most of the rats. Aunt Jessie would always tell me to watch out for rattle snakes, but I never did see one.

I graduated from Uvalde High School in 1950 and then attended the junior college in Uvalde for one year. However, due to the Korean conflict, I joined the U.S. Navy on July 10, 1951 and served eight years (four active and four inactive). For three years, three months, and twenty two days I was aboard the U.S.S LSM 268 (land ship medium) designed for unI have hunted in every part of Texas (except the Texloading vehicles onto the beach. as panhandle) and taken big/small game species Afterwards, I attended Texas A&I University [today from Colorado, Oklahoma, North Carolina, Maryknown as Texas A&M],and graduated in 1957 with land, Delaware, New Jersey, Arkansas, Louisiana, a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry. Clint Kasten I am extremely proud to have been a member of the NFAA for the past 60 years! I had an interest in archery starting in my early teen years. Purchasing my first factory-made bow from Sears at the age of 15, I was invited by an older cousin to join the Bootheel Bowhunters Club in Cape Girardeau, MO. Soon realizing that I needed a better bow, I bought a used Hoyt Olympian laminated bow from a fellow club member. In the late 1950s, I joined the Missouri Bow Hunters and the NFAA. At that time in field archery, Field and Hunter Rounds did not have distances marked on the shooting stakes, and almost all archers shot barebow. We aimed using the gap method; String walking and multiple anchor points weren’t known. This is the style of shooting I shot my whole life, and I always enjoyed it. In 1962, I joined the US Air Force and was stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas. We had a field archery club and range at the base and also joined the Little Rock Bowhunters. There were many field tournaments, and I won the 2nd Air Force Barebow Championship in 1964. When we returned to St. Louis in 1966, I joined the Northside Archers Club and served as President several times. The Joe W r i g h t Award was awarded to me for service to our club.

ment in Aurora, Illinois. The free-style champion was using a compound bow and a homemade release aid! That began the controversy among archers, and as a result, two divisions were created: Free-Style Limited and Open Free Style. (The only real change in barebow was the idea of string walking and multiple anchor points.) One of my funniest memories happened during bowhunting season in 1959, I was in my tree stand when a fox appeared in the field in front of me. Since I didn’t see any deer, I thought I would shoot at the fox. After I shot one arrow, he ran away; I climbed out of my tree stand to retrieve my arrow. Lo and behold, I looked up to see a big buck staring at me! There was nothing I could do, as my bow was still up in the tree stand. I was awarded the NFAA Order of the Bone Award as well as the hysterical laughter from my Bootheel Bowhunter colleagues for years to come.

Over the years, I won numerous MBAA State and Midwestern Sectional Championships. (photo 1 caption: Clint Kasten photo as St. Louis County Barebow Champion 1966-1971). At 55, I started participating in the National Senior Games, winning four National Senior Barebow Championship Gold Medals. (photo 2 caption: Clint Kasten shooting in the Senior Olympics in 2001 in St. Louis, MO). My advice to new archers: Enjoy the style of shooting that you choose and make new friends who also love the sport of archery. Mike Lepera

The changes in equipment over the years are tremendous. From Dacron strings to Dyneema, wooden arrows (and everything in-between) to carbon, adhesives for feathers and vanes (at one time nothing stuck to aluminum), wooden bows to carbon and machined aluminum risers. Price would be another big thing. My top-of-the-line Staghorn bow was $65.00. Now the sky’s the limit.

After four years in the navy and looking for something to do, I was introduced to archery in 1956 by a friend of mine. Back then there wasn’t too much information available about how to shoot. It took a lot of trial and error, but in 1967 I was lucky enough to become the New Jersey State Barebow Champion. I stuck with the sport and apprised myself of the rules; I took full advantage of everything the sport had to offer from competitions to educational programs. It was quite a ride then, as it still is now.

One of the most important changes I see in archery today is the amount of knowledge that is available, either in-person or on the internet. Just be careful as everyone these days it seems, claims to be an expert. My advice to new-comers is join an NFAA affiliated club and get the best equipment that you can afford, because you will wind up doing it any how. It really depends on how far you wish to take it. If you think you want to play the game competitively, get lessons from a coach who knows what they are doing, and not from some wannabe. It will put you so far ahead of the curve. Whatever the cost, if you find the right one, it will certainly be worth it!

I spent more than 25 years as New Jersey State Director and NFAA Mid Atlantic Councilman, really enjoyed the job! I was chairman of a few national tournaments and a bunch of sectionals. I introduced a few rules and regulations that are still in force today. Always have been a rule man. I’ve been to every one of The Vegas Shoots, not as a competitor, but as part of the NFAA team and/or a vendor. When I wasn’t in my booth, I was judging, or running the shooting lines, which was most of the time. I was part of the team when the NFAA acquired the Vegas tournament, with most of the credit going to Bruce Cull. It has come a long way from about 800 shooters to almost 4000. First

owner sold the company, I was hired as a manager and purchasing agent. While working there I took a NFAA College Instructor Course and became a Certified Archery Coach. In addition to that, I also taught bow hunting to many of the people that I sold archery equipment. While hunting I managed to succeed in harvesting several mule deer and small game animals.

I started shooting in 1962. My husband and I were Scout Leaders. I had a group of Brownies and he had a den of Cubies. We were invited to see an archery demonstration by a couple of the local archery clubs. When we returned home he said that is something the family could do. So we went out and bought four sets of archery equipment, bows, arrows, tabs and gloves (not knowing which would work) arrows and a target butt. We met a new neighbor that lived not far down the creek from us. He had set up a target along the creek bank and was shooting. It turned out that he owned a sporting goods store that had a small range out back. He began to work with us and teach us how to make strings, arrows, and all the great things about archery, that makes it the great sport that we all love. In 1964, Denver had a big flood that altered our lives significantly. At the time, I was working at a nursing home on one side of the river, away from my home and children Jane and James. I was stuck, but my husband managed to get to them and care for them until I could get home- some three days later! The sporting goods store owner, that we learned so much about archery from, offered me a job. He said, come work for me the hours your children are in school, you all can shoot for free, plus 10% on equipment. The wages were quite a bit less, but no sitter needed and all the extras was worth the change. Over the years I worked at the archery shop and range working my way up. When the original

I joined the NFAA back in 1964 and began competing at both field and indoor archery events. I managed to win many awards. Most notable was the the Colorado Overall Championship, in five continuing decades. I’ve competed in The Vegas Shoot many times and made friends with a lot of great people. I’ve also won the silver bowl as a senior twice during the Indoor Nationals and the NFAA Outdoor Sectional Field. At the Senior Games in Texas I won 3rd, and in Arizona won the gold medal! I had a great time shooting with the Hoyts, Babe B, Faye B, Darlene C, Eva T, Pickering, and so many over the yearsthey are still in my memories of great sport. The first recurve bow I owned was a Wing Gull for target and a Ben Pearson for hunting. Eventually, I moved up the scale in bows and had a custom made Richards made for me in 1964. I shot recurves for target until some of my students got together and bought me a Jennings Arrowstar in 1977, then I bought a Fletchmatic release and went to the compound and unlimited. I received the Medal of Merit from the NFAA, along with other archers from Colorado at one of the Colorado State Annual Meetings and banquet. That was a really great honor. I continued working until I was 75 and my body said it’s time to shut it down. It has been truly a great employment and sport at the same time. I couldn’t ask for better.

sometimes you get lucky and land next to the puck. 1974 was my first trip to Vegas. We shot the Desert Inn Classic in the old tiny convention center. Then in about 1976 we moved to Tropicana because it was a larger place to shoot. It just kept getting bigger and bigger! We went to the Sands, Rivera, and finally South Point. Bruce Cull did something right, he turned the Vegas Shoot into quite a show, with over 3500 shooters. Everyone should get to see this at least once. In 2019, I will have been there 45 years. It has been a great run. I wanted to give back to this sport, so I became an Oregon State Director. I served for many years, and also became a life member. I’m really proud of the gold card I get to show off! I started teaching archery classes at the Mt. Scott Community Center for the City of Portland. There I set up several archery camps and series of 4 week classes for 30 years. I was able to introduce archery to hundreds of people from six years to seniors on how to shoot a bow.

Like the NFAA- I started out with archery in 1939! When NFAA had pins at 50 and 75 years I jumped at them; I can’t wait much longer for my 100 year pin. I got involved in organized archery when I moved to Portland and joined the Quiver Rattler Archery Club. I was very active locally when I also joined the NFAA to attend the tournament and try to get better. After I retired from the day-job I went to work for Archery Afield, a large archery shop in Portland. There were field, hunter, and animal round shoots We started the Orealmost every weekend in the summer, at a number gon shoot up, which I of clubs in Southwest Washington and Oregon. Field Archery Championships August 23-25, 2019 • YPSILANTI, MICHIGAN • WASHTENAW SPORTSMAN’S CLUB The 2019 North American Field Archery Championship can be summed up in two words; “smiling faces”. From the Opening Ceremony that included a professional singer singing the national anthem as a Military Honor Guard raised the stars and stripes, to the fun filled awards ceremony, a good time was had by all. Not to mention perfect weather conditions, a very challenging Field course, and a lot of archer comradery.

17 states and three countries were represented. New NAFAC and World records were set by some of the archers. Congratulations to those record setters. A lot of effort, and pride, was put forth by the workers at the Washtenaw Sportsman’s Club to assure that all the archers had a good time. A big thank you goes to those workers, and also to all the archers that supported Field archery by attending this tournament.

the vegas shoot

announces

major additions for 54th edition The Vegas Shoot takes place at the South Point Hotel & Casino, February 7-9, 2020. See full details at www.thevegasshoot.com.

$10K-a-Day Championship Shoot-Off for 300-point perfect shooters. Scholarship fund increased to $40K with more for collegiate archers. Highest-ever prize fund of $490K across all competition divisions. The Vegas Shoot has announced major additions to its prize fund, which will total a record $490,000, for its next edition, due to take place at the South Point Hotel and Casino on February 7-9, 2020 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

$40,000. The junior essay contest is open to competitors aged 12 to 17. Young people should submit an essay of 500-1000 words on the subject of archery. The winners will be announced in the championship arena on February 8.

Championship archers will be able to enter a $10K-a-Day Shoot-off for the first time. This will run on Friday and Saturday at the tournament and see all those who shoot perfect, 300-point scores enter a single-arrow sudden-death eliminator.

The Collegiate Scholarship program is open to all full-time students

The last shooter standing will win the $10,000 prize. A boost to the youth scholarship offering sees the introduction of a Junior Essay Contest and a program of Collegiate Scholarships. They bring the total amount available in scholarships to 20 scores, tournament info and more at nfaausa.com

The scores from the first two days of competition will decide the collegiate results. Archers can participate in the flight or championship competitions at The Vegas Shoot but will be ranked for collegiate purposes in divisions of Male and Female - Compound, Recurve, Bowhunter, and Recurve Barebow. The top three student-athletes in each division will receive scholarships valued at $500, $300 and $200, respectively, for use towards higher

education. The top three schools – with at least three archers and at least one recurve or recurve barebow archer registered – will also be ranked on the twoday results of their studentathletes. The top three schools will receive $1,500, $1,000 and $500, respectively, for their team or club. Team registration will be available prior to the start of competition. NFAA Foundation President Bruce Cull said: “Having 4000 shooters on the line in Vegas was only a dream a few years ago but is now close to becoming a reality.” “This ongoing support of the archery community enables us to give more back. We’re committed to continuing to invest in shooter experience, in strengthening participation, in growing the prize pot – and maintaining The Vegas Shoot as both the biggest and best indoor archery tournament in the world.” The Vegas Shoot is the largest indoor archery tournament in the world. Attendance has risen significantly over the last decade – 3,767 archers competed in the last edition – and around 4,000 shooters and 6,000 spectators are expected to visit the event in 2020. Start the new decade at the BIGGEST shoot of the year! Take part in over $490K in cash prizes and scholarships.
