southwest SECTION - tom daley

Tom Daley started his distinguished archery career in the late 1940’s hunting small game in Central California, roaming the towns of Gustine and Newman. He poked holes in a lot of feathered and furried creatures back then. Tom started shooting target archery in 1962 and, much to the delight of game animals throughout the Central Valley, began poking holes in paper at an indoor range in Redwood City, CA. Tom was the type of archer who wasted a lot of paper. Mostly his arrows just shot out the centers of those paper targets and left the surrounding perimeter pretty much unused, wasted paper.

In 1968, Tom became the State Archery Champion by winning the CBH Barebow title at Mt. Diablo. Back then, the barebow division was king. The following year, he defended his title in San Francisco by shooting the highest aggregate score ever in the barebow division. This was a time of change and advancement in archery equipment. The release was just being introduced. In 1970, using a release, Tom became the first person to shoot a perfect 300 at the Las Vegas Tournament. Later that year, shooting against 1700 people, he won the biggest indoor tournament ever held, Cobo Hall in Detroit, Michigan. He won it with an exciting shoot-off with Ivan Winder of Utah.

Since then, shooting in all styles from Long Bow to Pro Division, Tom has won no less than 25 California State tournaments. In 2001, he won all four State tournaments. He has won all of the State tournaments in more than one style. He has won the National Field Championships in three different styles and 3-D Nationals in two styles. He has won all the team events from Redding, Nevada City, Fresno, Conejo and the Full Draw Archery Recurve Team Shoot. At one time or another, he has won all the local shoots he has attended including Redding, Fresno Safari, Nevada City and the Maya Stick Bow Classic. He has won Indoor and Outdoor Regionals and Sectionals. But a big deal to Tom was that he has won the Fresno Safari in five decades: 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. Fresno Safari was at times harder to win than the Nationals. Shooting in the Barebow class at the 2003 State Field Championships, at the age of 60, Tom shot the highest score he has ever shot and set a new State record for that style.

In addition to being an outstanding target archer, Tom is an equally accomplished bow hunter. His lists of big game animals taken include Blacktail and Mule deer (20+), elk (largest 7 by 6 measuring 312), hogs, goats Santa Cruz sheep, a 300lb. black bear and an Alaskan caribou (measuring 386).

Throughout the years, Tom has found time in his busy winning archery tournament schedule to give exhibitions at the San Mateo County Fair, the Boy Scouts of America, various Boy’s Clubs, colleges and sports clubs. He has taught archery in hunter safety programs and has served organized archery. At his local club, King’s Mountain Archers, he has served as President, Range Captain and Publicity Chairman numerous times. Tom has served as Mission Trail Bow Hunters Association President, Vice President and Publicity during many terms. He has served as President of CBS/SAA for four years, NFAA Director for the State of California for a number of years, and is currently the Southwest Councilman where he has served for six years. Tom was inducted into the California Archery Hall of Fame in 2004, has been awarded a life membership in the King’s Mountain Archers and has been honored with a lifetime achievement award from the CBH/ SAA Big Game Club.

NFAA POLICY UPDATES

NFAA Transgender Policy

Effective June 1st, 2022

NFAA incorporates by reference the results of the Consensus Meetings and statements of the International Olympic Committee’s Medical Commission from October 2003, May 2004, January and October 2010, and April 2011; and the IOC Medical and Scientific Commission’s Consensus Meeting on Sex Reassignment and Hyperandrogenism (November 2015).

NFAA’s Gender Policy is based on the results and guidelines of the IOC actions meetings referenced above.

(Please note this Gender Policy and the guidelines recommended by the IOC are a living document and will be subject to review in light of any scientific or medical developments.)

NFAA deems it necessary to ensure, insofar as possible, that transgender athletes are not excluded from the opportunity to participate in archery competitions. As such, NFAA’s Gender Policy is based on the results and guidelines of the IOC actions. Policy consistency across its official sanctioning bodies is important to the integrity of the competitive sport of archery. At the time this policy was adopted, there was no official transgender policy adopted by USA Archery or the USOPC. In the event USA Archery adopts a transgender policy applicable to the sport of archery, the USA Archery policy shall supercede the policy set forth herein, and such policy shall become the official transgender policy of the NFAA.

Eligibility to compete in male and female competitions.

Gender transition before puberty.

Individuals transitioning from male to female before puberty shall be regarded as girls and women (female). This also applies to individuals who transition from female to male, who shall be regarded as boys and men (male).

Gender transition after puberty.

Those who transition from female to male shall only be eligible to compete in the male category without restriction if the athlete has declared that his gender identity is male.

• Those who transition from male to female are eligible to compete in the female category under the following conditions:

• The athlete has declared that her gender identity is female. The declaration cannot be changed, for sporting purposes, for a minimum of four years;

• The athlete must demonstrate that her total testosterone level in serum has been below 10 nmol/L for at least 12 months prior to her first competition;

• The athlete’s total testosterone level in serum must remain below 10 nmol/L throughout the period of desired eligibility to compete in the female category; and

• Compliance with these conditions may be monitored by testing. In the event of non-compliance, the athlete’s eligibility for female competition will be suspended for 12 months.

Eligibility of female athletes with hyperandrogenism

A female recognized in law shall be eligible to compete in female competitions if she has androgen levels below the male range (as shown by the serum concentration of testosterone) or, if within the male range, she has an androgen resistance such that she derives no competitive advantage from said levels.

To avoid discrimination, if not eligible for female competition, the athlete shall be eligible to compete in male competition.

Compliance

In the event that the gender of a competing athlete is questioned, the Executive Committee of NFAA may designate a licensed medical professional (e.g. physician, registered nurse, phlebotomist, etc.) who shall have the authority to collect and test blood samples and take all appropriate measures for the determination of compliance with this policy, and the athlete shall submit to such testing in the same manner as required under the NFAA’s anti-doping and drug use policy.

The investigation of a particular case will be conducted under strict confidentiality.

If an athlete fails or refuses to comply with any aspect of the eligibility determination process, while that is his/her right as an individual, he/she will not be eligible to participate as a competitor.

Should an athlete be considered ineligible to compete in the category he/she desires, he/she shall be notified of the reasons why, and informed of the conditions he/she would be required to meet should he/she wish to be eligible. The competitor has the right to appeal the determination of eligibility in the same manner appeals are handled under the NFAA’s anti-doping and drug use policy.

Interpretation of these guidelines will respect the essence of the male/female classification and also guarantee the fairness and integrity of male/female competitions for all athletes.

Note: Nothing in these guidelines is intended to undermine in any way the requirement to comply with the NFAA’s anti-doping policies or those of USA Archery, the USOPC, or the IOC.

90 ARROWS IN VEGAS CONCLUDES WITH 25 CHAMPIONSHIP 900S

Across all the divisions, we had 25 championship shooters, including three women, score perfect 900s. Tanja Gellenthien, Paige Pearce and Liko Arreola are all former champions of the tournament. Gellenthien was the third woman to ever score a perfect 900 points back in 2017. Pearce hit the mark in 2020, while Arreola is the defending Vegas Champion.

The Compound Open competition featured 22 perfect men plus a Lucky Dog, Stephan Hansen this year, for a shot at the $50,000 grand prize. The 25 compound championship shooters were joined by compound archer Julio Barillas of Guatemala, who was the only shooter in the flights division to finish clean.

“It’s the greatest feeling that I have ever felt, the adrenaline and pressure of not missing is big, but when you release the arrow in the middle knowing you did a great job is awesome,” said Julio. “The last time I came to Vegas was in 2017 and was far away from the 900. Now, my goal is to come back and shoot in the Championships division.”

THE VEGAS SHOOT TOPS 3000 REGISTERED ARCHERS IN 2022

More than 3000 shooters registered to compete at this year’s Vegas Shoot on February 4-6, 2022 in the South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas, Nevada. Archers came from across the 50 states of the US and 43 foreign countries. The overall total was down from the registration record of 3816 in 2020 – but considering the still-challenging restrictions on travel and disruption from the pandemic, it’s impressive.

“For many years the news was that we had broken the record number of registrations but, this year, considering the situation, we’re just so proud that we’ve broken the 3000 barrier once again,” said Vegas Shoot President Bruce Cull. “To have shooters from all around the world gather here once again is just so encouraging. In 2022, it’s a great return to normality and we are back to Vegas.”

Boasting more than 980 shooters, the compound flights were once against the biggest division at The Vegas Shoot. The bowhunter flights and recurve flights followed with 261 and 246 entrants, respectively. A total of 214 men competed for the grand prize of $50,000 in the compound open championships. No women registered this year. The prize fund for The Vegas Shoot 2022 totaled over $400,000.

Washington’s Bodie Turner and Hawaii’s Liko Arreola took home the compound crowns at this year’s Vegas Shoot. Neither is older than 15 years old.

Turner took home a grand prize of $50,000 after beating out 21 other perfect men and Lucky Dog Stephan Hansen in the main event open division on Sunday evening at the South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa.

“IT WAS A REALLY FUN SHOOT. I’VE COME EVERY YEAR. MY THIRD YEAR HERE, FIRST SHOOTING PRO AND IT’S JUST AWESOME SHOOT,”

said Bodie.

Bodie scored 900 87X to qualify for the championship shootdown.

He was joined on the line by 22 other men: Nick Kappers, Dan McCarthy, Sergio Pagni, Gaius Carter, Bob Eyler, Justin Hannah, Alberto Blazquez, Jesse Broadwater, Jeff Raney, Steve Marsh, Kyle Douglas, Christopher Perkins, Mike Schloesser, Jacob Slusarz, Jacob Pettit, Nico Wiener, Federico Pagnoni, Jase Boils, Richard Bowen, Lonnie Jacob Marlow, Eric Jenkins and Lucky Dog Stephan Hansen.

All of them shot 30 points for the first end, scored using the big 10-ring. When the competition moved to scoring the little X as 10, though, the field starting thinning. And after the format moved to single-arrow shooting, archers taking turns one after another, the real drama hit.

With just four remaining – McCarthy, Kappers, Pagni and Turner – two-time champion Pagni dropped an arrow on the concrete.

The miss effectively eliminated the Italian in fourth. McCarthy dropped out the same end. Two passes later, Bodie delivered a confident final 10 to oust Kappers for the title.

He finished his post-match interview with a bold statement: “I’d like to win it more in the future, it’s a first good year for me. I’m definitely happy with it.”

Bodie turned 15 yesterday.

The compound women’s champion, now back-to-back winner Liko Arreola, is just 14. She dropped experienced pros Paige Pearce and Tanja Gellenthien in just one small-10 end, finishing the largest-ever perfect shootdown in the women’s event faster than anyone expected.

“I’M FEELING REALLY, REALLY GOOD. I WAS A LITTLE NERVOUS AT THE BEGINNING, BUT IT WAS REALLY FUN SHOOTING WITH PAIGE AND TANJA,”

said Liko.

A year ago, when she collected her first title during pandemic restrictions, the finals took place in one of the halls at the South Point, which didn’t quite carry the atmosphere of the main arena.

“It was a little more shocking and a little bit more nervous for me because I’ve never done this before, the shoot-off and it’s really fun,” she said.

After another round of scoring, Gellenthien took second and Pearce, came third.

Bill Drake beat four-time champion Keith Trail to the compound senior championship title. The senior shooters entered the arena after they both finished tied after the three days of competition at 899.

Only one scoring end on the big 10, which saw a perfect 30-points from Drake, was required to decide the title.

SAID DRAKE. “LAST YEAR WE WENT EIGHT ENDS BEFORE WE DECIDED ON IT, SO I EXPECTED A COUPLE, BUT THE NERVES WERE AS MUCH AS I’VE EVER EXPERIENCED.”

The conclusion of day two of competition is also the conclusion of the junior events at 2022’s edition of The Vegas Shoot.

During the youth and collegiate award ceremony on Saturday, February 5, top finishers in the events were awarded scholarships totalling $39,000 to be used towards funding higher education and pursuing their passion for the sport. Young adult, youth and cub divisions at The Vegas Shoot scored 30 arrows a day on Friday and Saturday and were ranked by score.

Scholarships are awarded to the top three shooters of the junior and collegiate age categories in the compound, recurve, bowhunter and recurve barebow divisions.

An additional $1,000 scholarship was given to one young male and one young female who participated in the junior essay contest. The essay topic only needed to fit an archery theme. Applicants needed to compete at the 2022 Vegas Shoot and be 12-17 years of age. Top essays were chosen by an independent panel, and the winners were announced and awarded on February 5 during the Junior Awards Ceremony. Zach Maracine and Alexandra Mott were the two essay winners for 2022.

Winner Zach chose to write about the art of the sport in his essay.

“I didn’t shoot my best, but I put my heart into this essay. It sounds cheesy but I’m pretty happy with what I made,” said Zach. “It explains how I feel about archery and how I feel that archery is a misconception art, and how some people don’t really understand the hard work and dedication that is put into the spot.”

Scholarships at The Vegas Shoot are awarded by the National Field Archery Association in partnership with the Easton Foundations. The full essays can be read on the following pages.

To me, archery is an art. A delicate, yet aggressive dance to get an arrow to the middle of a target. The pregnant pause I take before deciding to release an arrow is the calm before a storm of thoughts that try to get my arrow to score a ten. Archery is frustrating, but that frustration makes the fun times so much better. The lack of attention I have to so many things while I’m at full draw, but a heightened focus on the target and wind sock is peaceful. The feeling of the cool air brushing against my face as I subconsciously tighten my left eyelid is comforting. So many elements of muscle memory come into play, yet every shot feels new and refreshing. Archery is beautiful, and yet so many people don’t realize it.

A lot of people think that archery is simply raising a bow, aiming it, then releasing the arrow, and that it always goes where you aim. While this idea of archery is correct, yet super simplified, I do hope that more and more people start to realize how much minutiae is involved in the shot, and how greatly small changes affect where the arrow goes. Archery is a journey to control the minutiae to work in the archer’s favor, and the small details within their brain. At the elite level, archery is 100% mental, and the best

recurve young adult male archers can control their thoughts to be almost the same each shot. This pursuit of a perfection that is unattainable, yet we archers are all so convinced this perfection is the best thing we will achieve. The journey of archery is taxing, even to those with mental toughness, fortitude, and overall grit. The realization that success in archery isn’t as widely revered because of how misconceived the sport is by many is discouraging, but simply another trial in the journey to be the best archer you can be.

While a lot of the facts seem to say that archery isn’t super rewarding or worth the hard work, the feeling is always so addicting. Shooting a great shot and it going exactly in the middle is the greatest feeling for any archer. Having three great shots and them all going in the middle is a greater feeling, and having six is even better. There is always more and more perfection to be had, and every archer wants more after the smallest taste. Knowing that there is a connection to an abstract middle is weird, but feeling that connection is indescribably amazing. Archers are on a thrill ride to feel that connection in more satisfying ways, at national tournaments, on the world stage, or repeatedly on the world stage.

The benefits as a person from archery are astounding. I’ve learned so many lessons, become a better person, and have grown majorly because of archery. Archery is such a strange sport, and loving it no matter what anyone else thinks is part of the journey. I visualize shots everywhere, randomly bring my hands up to simulate a shot no matter the setting, and I don’t even realize it. It may seem weird to someone else in a grocery store, but now I’m okay with that.

Many people’s views on archery are based on misconceptions that undermine hard work and very real success. Even if archery seems weird, it’s the best feeling in the world for me, and simply being able to do it is one of the greatest privileges I have. Archery is so many things, a connection to a point in a piece of paper, a journey to perfection, and a refinement of yourself as a person. Archery is an art that can never be perfected, but that’s okay.

COMPOUND YOUTH FEMALE

It was the last tournament of the season, and I was yet to shoot a 300. I stared long and hard at my target, trying to keep my mind from racing. It was the seventh end, and I hadn’t shot a four yet. The tips of my fingers tingled, and my knees were weary. I closed my eyes as I sat and tried to tune out the low whisper from the crowd, trying to put my head into a clear state of mind. I took a deep breath as bottom shooters were called to the line. The grip on my bow was firm.

Archery is my solo sport, the sport that has taught me patience. One that is heavily in one’s head, unlike my other sport, softball. Softball, unlike archery, is a high energy, team sport. What I love about archery is how it has helped mold me mentally into a wellrounded athlete.

I straddled the line and in a familiar stance. I faced my target, a slow breath through my nose. My neck was cold and painted in sweat beads. I had a good grip on my bow, my wrist was mush. I pulled back and made sure my setup was strong, struggling to keep my nerves out of thought. My heart was pounding out of my chest, I was sure the person next to me could hear it. Nonetheless, I held my pin in place and let my body do the rest of the work.

Seven years of practice and muscle memory had led me to this point, all I had to do was harness it. I couldn’t let my head be what dragged me down. I slowly pulled my elbow back and pushed my pin through the X, executing a perfect spot. The arrow tore through the air landing in the X. I took a sigh of relief and reminded myself that I was capable of more than I realized and just needed to calm down.

The top shooters began to finish up as I sat in my chair, my mind began to break loose. My breath was uneven and short as the anxiousness I was feeling began to spike. My head was racing, and my heart was pounding. As everyone returned from scoring, I could feel the panic rise in my chest. I walked quickly back to my seat and reached for my water. I knew to accomplish my goal that I had to pull it together right now before I moved up to twenty yards the following season. I had come this far pushing through all my failed attempts, all the long practices and lessons I had endured finally led me to this tournament, and I couldn’t let it go to waste now.

That’s the great thing about maturing, I realized that I’ve always had coaches who can teach me the fundamentals of the game and how to physically perform well, but the mental aspect was on me. There isn’t an instruction manual on how one can control the shaky hands or spinning head, that all comes with time and experience. Although I was sitting in a room full of people, I had never felt more alone. No one was going to be able to pull me out of this hole I had crawled into, that was up to me. I had to extinguish the burning that was in my chest and focus. Find the state of my mind of nothingness, and so I did. I fell into a haze as bottom shooters were called to the line. Sometimes it’s better to let go of the thing you are holding onto so dearly. And in this case, I mentally released the reins and fell into a rhythm of precision.

Before I knew it, it was the twelfth end. My haze faded as I could taste success. All it would take was one arrow, one out of sixty to rip away what I had worked so hard. I took a deep breath as I took a stance on the line for the last time as a cub shooter. It was a bittersweet moment, but nostalgia could wait. My first arrow was nearly perfect, giving me the confidence I needed. My second arrow was full of hesitation, and I had to let down. My knees locked underneath me, and I could feel my anxiousness slowly return, filling my body. I pulled back again and this time, the arrow went off smoothly.

I wanted to travel a few minutes into the future and claim my prize, but now I’m grateful that I couldn’t. It wouldn’t have developed my ability to handle high stress situations and I would have never seen that it’s not only about the prize at the end. My third and fourth arrow found the five. It had all come down to this very last arrow, I only needed one more. I pulled back and took a shaky breath, my arm shaking unstoppably. I rested my nose on my string and let my pin rest on the X. So many thoughts were racing through my mind. What if it were to all go down the drain?

My fear of failure wasn’t going to be the thing that pulled me down, this was my last chance to make myself proud and I was going to harness it. I let the arrow fly and slowly let down to reveal that I had done it. I felt the wait of a thousand bricks float away as I let out the breath I didn’t know I was still holding. I turned around and saw my dad sitting a few seats behind me, a smile on his face and a big thumbs up. That day I reached a milestone that still makes me smile today. At the end of the season, my first 300 experience was the first of a lifetime of archery milestones.

Smokey Crews 55 years

The following members celebrated a service pin anniversary in 2021. These names and stories are in continuation of the Quarter 4 issue in 2021. It is with sincere appreciation that we recognize their continued support of the National Field Archery Association.

bow. Smokey was a champion Bare Bow tournament shooter for many years. In the late 80’s he decided to put sites on his bow and continued to take many trophies.

Smokey has helped set up seven different archery ranges over the years. When the National Archery in the Schools program came to Washington State Dave Mack, Smokey’s best friend got our club involved and several schools in our area. Smokey taught along with the team for 20 some years, and well he’s still teaching some.

In 1962 Smokey Crews picked up his first Bow. It was a Ben Pearson Cougar Two recurve. He joined the local archery club and NFAA about 1966. Smokey was the area rep for WSAA and played a big role in helping the Washington State game Dep. To set up areas and seasons for the rapidly growing archery community. He loved shooting tournaments and hunting with his recurve, which he shot for over 20 years before going to a compound

For thirty years Smokey taught Bow Hunter Education along with his wife and other club members.

In 2019 Smokey and his wife were inducted into the “Washington State Archery Hall Of Fame.” A great honor for their dedication to a life of archery. At the age of 80 he is still shooting with the same passion of the young man in 1962. His disability of neuropathy

in both feet keeps him seated for his shooting and hunting.

His love for Archery has been passes down to his children and grandchildren, Lord willing the great grandchildren some day!

I was born in Iowa in February of 1947 and my family moved to New Mexico in 1952 to a dry climate because of asthma problems with my father. He worked on highway construction and we lived in trailer camps put up by his company along the roads that were being built, moving all over the state as highways were completed and new ones contracted. We settled into a home in Aztec, New Mexico in 1962 and I attended Aztec HS. I grew up in the outdoors of the National Forests and open country playing with selfmade bows and dime store wooden arrows, hunting snakes, rabbits, and any other moving critters. We were rarely successful.

While in Valley High School in Albuquerque (about 1963-64) I bought my first manufactured bow, a Bear recurve, and wooden arrows from Groves Archery and started bow hunting in the Sandia Mountains above the city. In those days it was pretty much a “learn as you go” project and by talking with other archers that hunted as well. I graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1969 in Chemical Engineering and my first job was with Shell Oil Company in Martinez, CA. I soon met members of the Diablo Bowmen and joined that archery club, NFAA, and the California Bowmen Hunters and State Archery Association. I started California hunting and competitively shooting in Bowhunter Instinctive class.

About a year later, I moved to a new job in Long Beach, CA and joined the Long Beach Bowhunters club and was a member until my family moved to Illinois in 1992. During those years I held most offices in the club and became active as a club representative to the Orange Belt Field Archers region that represented many clubs at the CBH-SAA state meetings. I held most of the offices of OBFA and was also appointed as Region 5 Legislative Representative for CBH for bow hunting defense activities. Serving many years as the Region 5 rep, I attended many California Fish and Game Commission hearings and testified before the body representing the archery viewpoints. I was very active in CBH-SAA until I moved from California and at the time of leaving, I was the Senior Vice President of the organization under President Joe Dotterer. I was also active in bow hunter education by being an NFAA Instructor for years and a Hunter Safety Instructor for the California DNR. I started competing and hunting with a Jennings compound bow after meeting Tom Jennings and talking with him at a Fresno Safari tournament in the middle 1970’s. With a great love of bow hunting, I took several big game animals listed in the CBH record book and hunted not only California but also Arizona, Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Oregon, and New Mexico for Coastal mule deer, mule deer, elk, black bear, javelina, wild hogs, Island goats and Island sheep on Catalina and Santa Cruz Islands.

I was married to my lovely wife Marilyn in September of 1980 and we have had four children. I cut back on the frequency of

tournament competition as we were raising kids and priorities changed but had still actively competed after moving the family to Crystal Lake, Illinois in 1992. I became a member of the Big Foot Archers of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin about 20 years ago after membership in another club that no longer exists. I continue to be very active in Big Foot and continue to hunt actively in Illinois for whitetail deer and wild turkey. It has been a regular tradition to take my two week trips with my hunting buddies Tim Zink, Lou Foglesong, and Jimmy Mendez. Occasionally I will take the opportunity to hunt other states and the Rockies but my priorities are now on my children’s families and grandchildren. The fire still burns brightly even as I get older and have had to slow down a bit due to age and some injuries, but archery and bow hunting will forever be in my heart and soul.

600 120X SCORES FOR THE FIRST TIME IN NFAA HISTORY!

For the first time in the history of the NFAA Indoor Nationals, the winner of the Freestyle Professional Female division was decided in a perfect shoot off.

Liko Arreola, Paige Pearce and Tanja Gellenthien each shot perfect scores of 600 points with 120Xs to make history. These are the very same three women who also tied on perfect scores at the Vegas Shoot in February, with Liko eventually taking the win.

At Indoor Nationals, archers shoot two rounds over two days. Each round consists of 30 arrows, split into 12 ends of five, for a total of 300 points per day. A combined score of 600 points is the maximum and only those who shoot 120Xs automatically move into the final shoot offs on Saturday night. No woman had ever achieved that feat before this weekend.

Pearce added before the shoot off: “It means a lot. There’s three of us going out there tonight: myself, Tanja and Liko. All of us kind of made history in Vegas for being the 900 girls that repeated it, and then we’re also now the first three to do it [here in Louisville], so it’s pretty neat. We were all down there joking saying like ‘here we go, it’s a repeat of the Vegas shoot off’, which is pretty cool.”

Tanja Gellenthien beat Paige Pearce and Liko Arreola in the historic finale.

“It feels amazing. It’s the title I’ve been trying to get for many, many years and I’ve had my shots but there’s been bad days or shot the wrong target, so this feels amazing,” said Tanja.

The women started with an end of practice followed by inside-out scoring rounds.

Tanja, Paige and Liko tied two ends, first with 25 and then with 24 as the pressure ramped up. In the third, back-to-back Vegas Shoot Champion Arreola dropped a point and was eliminated in third. Tanja and Paige continued to decide the winner.

With her fourth arrow of the fourth end, Pearce landed a four. Tanja Gellenthien needed two more perfect arrows to claim victory – and she delivered.

“Fast is not really my go to shot, so when you see me out there and I’m slow, that’s not what I want, I want that fast shot. I was actually slower than I wanted to be today.”

3-PEAT CHAMPION

KYLE DOUGLAS SECURES THIRD INDOOR NATIONALS TITLE IN LOUISVILLE

Utah’s Kyle Douglas won Indoor Nationals for an incredible third consecutive time, beating 15 other perfect 600 120xs shooters to lift the champion trophy yet again on Saturday night in Louisville, Kentucky.

“It’s pretty crazy. It’s hard enough to win one, let alone three in a row,” said Kyle. “I don’t know how that happened. I’m thankful for it.”

The 16 men took on the arena and started with a round of practice.

Nick Kappers and Bob Eyler were the first two shooters to drop from the line after the first end. Then, in the second, with sudden-death scoring inside-out calls on the middle ring, a further 10 missed the middle, leaving just four archers in contention.

Kyle Douglas, Sawyer Sullivan, Braden Gellenthien and Curtis Broadnax shot just one more end to decide the winner.

Sullivan, Gellenthien and Broadnax all clipped the inside of the X-ring, dropping points, leaving Douglas as the only remaining perfect shot – and now a three-time national indoor champion.

“I was staying focused. You never going to be calm out there, so there’s no sense really trying to calm down too much but just not making big mistakes. I was just making the strongest shot I possibly can,” he added.

Broadnax was given fourth, Gellenthien third and Sullivan second, the latter two needing one further end to decide the podium order.

Kendall Woody took the Freestyle Professional Senior Male division title, followed by Randall Morocco and Benton Christensen in second and third place.

Other winners included in Fiona McClean of Canada in the Freestyle Professional Senior Female, Todd Nelson in the Freestyle Professional Silver Senior Male and Tom Coblentz in the Freestyle Professional Master Senior Male divisions, all on X-count.

Advice from a Collegiate Archer

For archers passionate about the sport, college is an opportunity to continue doing what they love while still trying to find the right fit for academics and lifestyle. I get it, I’ve been there. My name is Elizabeth Litwin, and I am a fisheries and wildlife major at Michigan State University. I’m also a competitive barebow archer on the MSU Archery Team. Throughout high school, I competed at the state and national level in USA Archery and NFAA tournaments and fell in love with it. I knew I had to continue competing in college. Michigan State was the first school I visited, and it ended up being the perfect fit for me. Here are my best tips for going through the steps of the collegiate admissions and selection process as an archer.

1. Do Your Research

There are a variety of opportunities from small private schools to major universities. Look HERE (https://www.usarchery.org/find-aclub) for a list of all schools that have an archery program registered with USA Archery (filter by "collegiate" programs). Some archery programs are more competitive than others. At MSU, we have both a "club" that is open to any MSU student regardless of archery experience, and a "team" of archers that represent us at regional and national events. Remember that you can start your own archery organization if your dream school does not have one established.

Reach out to someone on the team! Don’t be shy to ask questions about their college experience. The first place to start is the team’s website, Facebook page, or Instagram and find an email. Introduce yourself and fire away with questions! Get an idea of the team chemistry and meet the coach if you can! See if you can meet a team member at a tournament so you can see how the team interacts.

Be sure to find a school that is a good fit for your athletic, academic, and professional goals. Researching the academic programs that are available at prospective colleges and universities can assist in narrowing your options, especially if you are looking for a niche program. Look at graduation rates, employment rates of graduates, and the kinds of classes different programs offer. If you’re a strong student looking for challenging classes, see which schools have an honors program. List the pros and cons of each school.

2. Applying for Admittance and Scholarships

Use archery in your general application! If the sport is a defining part of your life, it can be a great starting point for a topic. However, be sure to use a specific archery event or moment to say something meaningful about yourself. Show the admissions counselors the qualities that make you a good candidate for the school.

Read the school's mission statement to see what schools are looking for in applicants and be sure to highlight those in your essay. Most importantly, this is a chance to show who you are beyond your grades and test scores.Some schools with archery programs offer scholarships for talented archers, and there are outside opportunities offered by organizations such as the Easton Foundation and the NFAA.

Keep those grades up and look for opportunities provided by the university, specific departments, and alumni organizations. Call the school's Financial Aid Office and check their website. There are scholarships for minorities, women, students involved in community service, and those who have served in the military and even children of those who have served. Always be searching for independent scholarships that fit you in other ways outside of archery. Look for scholarships that relate to passions you have outside of archery. Ask your high school academic advisor for scholarship resources. They are also a great resource to review your essays before you send them in!

3. Maximize Your College Archery Experience

Time management skills are crucial! College classes are a beautiful thing because you have more choices with your schedule, but some classes can meet early or late in the day. Your schedule can be vastly different on a Tuesday compared to a Friday. For a lot of students this is liberating, but it can be a difficult adjustment from high school and can impact your practice schedule.

You may need to change your training habits! It's okay to practice for several hours only a few days a week if that works better than practicing every day for only an hour. Pro-tip: If you can do so without hindering your academic progress, see if it is possible to schedule your classes so you have none on Fridays. I found it worthwhile to take earlier classes and have Friday's free for archery travel or catching up on schoolwork.

Get involved in leadership roles. Most university organizations which provides a great way to be involved and learn real-life skills. In my first semester, there was an opening on the archery club e-board for a public relations manager. I jumped on it and ever since I've been keeping in touch with our community, planning events with other MSU organizations, updating social media, and talking to interested students. It's been really rewarding to help shape the future of MSU Archery.

Volunteer! Help organize tournaments and get involved with local youth programs. MSU Archery hosts several tournaments throughout the year. It's been really fun to put on great events and spending all that time with my teammates has been a great bonding experience. Fundraising opportunities make it feasible for you to pay less out of pocket to attend tournaments.

Most collegiate archers would probably say that while it is a challenge to pursue archery while balancing classes, internships, other student organizations, a social life, and part-time jobs, it is incredibly rewarding. For me, transitioning to college life was tough. Archery was the one part of my life that didn’t change, and that brought me a lot of comfort and new opportunities. Applying to college and starting your first semester is a lot of hard work, but it pays off!

2021 NFAA INDOOR LEAGUE RESULTS

Young Adult Female Bowhunter Freestyle

The inaugural National Indoor League took place from January 2 to March 12, and invited archers to shoot locally while competing nationally. League archers competed over the course of 10 weeks, and their best 8 scores (4 Vegas rounds and 4 NFAA 300 rounds) counted toward their final League placement. They could use scores shot in their local League, from their home range with witnesses, or from any NFAA event. All scores required a witness. Outreach Project Manager, Erika Jones, notes the event as a big success, "We are very pleased with the National Indoor League participation this year and received lots of positive feedback. We look forward to providing more League opportunities in the future for our members!" In Memory of Jerry Grabman

It is with sadness that we say farewell to a great friend and fellow archer, Jerry Grabman, from Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Some of you may remember shooting with Jerry or seeing him in Yankton in July of 2021, shooting the NFAA Outdoor Nationals or even the Field Nationals. Jerry shot them both. At the age of 81 years, old Jerry still loved to shoot.

I had the privilege of meeting Jerry back in 1989 when I first moved to Indiana. I smile every time I think of how he went out of his way to greet people and to make them feel welcome at every event. You wouldn’t find a nicer guy on, or off the range.

The last couple of years Jerry and I travelled to the Outdoor Nationals together. I got a chance to spend some quality time on and off the range with him. I learned things about him that I never knew, and I was intrigued by the fact that his first Outdoor Nationals that he shot was in 1961, 62, and 63. Imagine that…60 years later at the age of 80 years old, and he is still walking the range and shooting the Outdoor Nationals with a recurve!

He didn’t shoot the Nationals every year, but throughout the years I know he has traveled to Darrington, WA, Blue Springs, MO, Watkins Glen, NY, Wausaw, WI, Yankton, SD, and Mechanicsburg, PA just to name a few. When he wasn’t shooting National Events (indoor and outdoor both), he was shooting state and local tournaments, leagues, working on indoor and outdoor ranges, and somehow in between all that…he even found time to practice!

He loved the annual Barebow Picnic and he loved his church. Three things that he always made sure he did during his week at the Nationals was to Shoot the tournament, go to the Barebow picnic, and attend Mass on Saturday evening. What a great guy!!! Forever faithful to his Church, his friends and his family and to the sport that he spent a lifetime supporting. A Gentleman and a true Ambassador to the sport of Archery. I can’t say enough about him. Shooters from all over the country, Pine Hill Archery Club members, Barebow friends, and his Family will sure miss this man. He deserves this tribute. He worked hard over the years to make our archery experiences the very best they could be. We salute you Jerry!!!

In Memory of Gavin Maines

Our hearts go out to the family of Gavin Maines, 17, of Webster City, Iowa, who passed away on Saturday, March 26, 2022.

Gavin was born to Randy and Emily Maines, in Webster City, IA. He was a Senior at the Webster City High School. In addition to working at Mertz Engineering, Gavin was very involved in Archery, and was a member of the: Iowa State Archery Association (ISAA), National Field Archery Association (NFAA), Archery Shooters Association (ASA), Border Brigade Archery Club; and was also a Better the Hunt pro staff, Scott’s Strings pro staff, Center-X staff shooter, and Xpedition staff shooter. He won the 2021 NFAA National Championships in the Freestyle Young Adult Male Division. He also won the ISAA 4-time shooter of the year, ASA Shooter of the year, multiple Iron Buck Sharpshooter wins, and he was an avid R100 participant.

Gavin’s mom says “she could write a chapter book about how great of a kid Gavin is and everything he has accomplished in the last 17 years. And if you knew Gavin, you knew he was a well-rounded one-of-a-kind type of guy. He always had something funny to say and had an entrepreneur spirit with a strong work ethic. He’s been selling worms, mowing yards, and splitting firewood from a young age. Often his truck bed was loaded and ready to go for the next delivery. Gavin gets some of those traits from his father Randy Maines. He’s a natural archer and to say he loved archery was an understatement. Gavin would wake-up at 5 am to shoot arrows in the basement before school. Gavin and his Grandpa Don Miller spent many weekend together traveling to archery events all over the country. With the help of his grandpa that natural skill was raised to the next level. Sometimes, I would come home from work and Gavin would be in the kitchen making from scratch baked Mac n cheese. He loved to cook and knew his way around a kitchen and wasn’t afraid to try new foods. He loved to play wrestle with his dog Bud and like every older brother razz his sister every once in a while. For example, they once hid a plate of salad back and forth in each other’s room for several months. Gavin had solid traits and was refining them into manhood and trying to figure life out. We rest assured that Gavin knew Christ as his Lord and Savior since he was a young child.”

FOCUS ON THE RIGHT THINGS

The second day of competition for an NFAA Indoor Championship was slated to begin in 30 minutes. I was talking with some of my students in the male youth free-style division, as I tried to prepare them for a successful performance in their final leg of the tournament. “You have much better form than you shot yesterday,” I cited to two of the archers. “Both of you were focusing on hitting the ‘X’ because you knew that it would take a good score to win. You have been shooting very tight groups in practice, but you changed and were trying to fine-tune your aiming a little more for this competition. As you found out, it doesn’t work. If you want to shoot well today and stand a chance of placing, you have one choice. Put the pin in the center of the white (5 ring) and shoot the best form that you can shoot. Don’t try to hit the X ring; try to hit the middle of the white. The archers in the lead usually shoot defensively and their scores often go down. Shoot good form and you might pass them up.” I then turned to a student who was standing next to me and said, “You shot 60X yesterday and you won’t be coming down to join the others because you have a comfortable lead. Treat today as a practice day and just shoot good form.”

With three ends to go, one of the students came to me and said, “I’m hitting an ‘X’ on the first four arrows, but I always hit a 5 on the last arrow. Why am I missing the last shot?”

I asked him, “Were you trying to hit the white the first four arrows?”

“Yes,” was his reply.

I further questioned, “After you hit four

‘X’s,’ were you trying to hit the ‘X’ on the fifth shot?”

He smiled and answered, “Yes. Now I know what I’m doing wrong.” With renewed concentration, the young archer shot clean on the next three ends, finishing with a 300, 52X round. Changing his point of focus raised him to a top performance, as he moved from eighth place to second, behind my other student who had a recordsetting finish.

Picture yourself in the following scenario: You are shooting at an indoor archery tournament against competitors of equal abilities. They are using standard shooting lanes and targets, but your lane is a little different. You have to stand on a piece of four-inch foam with two small tree limbs between you and the target. Your target is not securely fastened, and a fan is blowing

to where it belongs, which is shooting a shot with perfect form. Concepts of winning and scoring have no importance until the competition is over. During a tournament, the focal point has to be on the performance, not its end result. By placing emphasis on “win” and “score,” you create unnecessary anxiety. This in turn produces mental distractions that prevent proper shot execution. Once anxiety takes over one’s thinking, a negative attitude erodes the ability to shoot a smooth shot. It is important for you to have a positive focus on your shooting skills. These thoughts will then help you become more relaxed and calm, enhancing your performance.

This mental approach, as you well know, is not easily mastered. Not only are you hampered by your self-inflicted pressure, you are also bombarded with the expectations of your friends and relatives. It is important for you to rework your goals and direct them toward your performance, not the result of your performance. In other words, make it your goal to shoot each shot with the best form possible. Remember, a perfect shot is nothing more than a perfect shot execution.

This type of situation is what many archers unknowingly do to themselves at a tournament. They mentally create obstacles that restrict them from shooting their best game, as they cloud their minds with irrelevant ideas and anxieties. Their thought patterns begin to run in many directions, resulting in a condition of unrest and tightened muscles. Performances are handicapped with distractions, just as they were with the archer in the previous set of circumstances.

The common pitfalls for most archers can be summarized in two words, “win” and “score.” Focusing on these prevents an archer from directing the thought process

When shooting an arrow, the mind and body must work together as one unit. This unit becomes the shot. As you participate in a tournament, you are standing there for one reason, to shoot the arrow. Nothing else should enter into the picture. Shooting the arrow is the event and that is the focus. You must free yourself from other thoughts, relax, and enjoy the moment. Become absorbed in the experience and think in the present. Do not reflect on the past or the future. Do not think about the last shot or the outcome of the present shot. Focus on the moment, trusting your mind and body to execute that perfect shot which you have practiced. Having a top performance will take care of itself.
