As previously explained, the hunting conditions were not as good as during the first night. In spite of this the Tennessee boys brought in their share of the gars.

O. K. (Scissor-Bill) Jones (a scissorbill is a species of gar) of Little Rock walked away with the honors of killing the greatest number of gars—28 during the two-day' hunt. Up to this time "Scissor-Bill" (as he is known) was an affable hunting partner, but after kill­ ing 28 gars, he became a pest, proclaim­ ing at the least provocation of "killing 2 8 gars in two nights.” The rest of us in Little Rock will find it hard to live with "Scissor-Bill” Jones for the next few months. We’ll take his measure (we hope) on our coming deer hunt in Oc­ tober.

the entire hunt. They used a speedy boat and were able to cover the t!. - action where it was occurring along a six mile stretch of Mattox Bay. Now, to the “meat” of this story— (1) The maner in which gars are hunted with bow and arrow and (2) the type of equipment used to kill gars at night.

The Bureau of Fisheries, Washington, lists three species of the gar fish family —the long-nosed gar: the short-nosed gar and the alligator gar. The most common of the species in Arkansas is the long-nosed; which should rightfully be named the sword-bill in that his bill is like a toothed sword. This species of gar reaches the length of five or six feet and due to his long and bony saw­ toothed bill, it is next to impossible to catch him with ordinary fishing equip­ ment. The short-nosed gar is very plen­ tiful in Arkansas waters, this type of gar is sometimes called the “scissorbill ” and it was this type of gar that ac­ bill counted for the large number killed during the hunt. The most productive method of hunting gars with bow and arrow is at night when they "float" near the sur­ face of the water during the hot, dry month of August. Lighting equipment used on this year's hunt varied widely. Some used an ordi­ nary frog gigging headlight, this was not so good—it didn't light up enough water area. Others used regular auto headlights mounted on their bows with a wire going from the bow to the 6-volt battery in the bottom of the boat. Cole­ man gasoline laterns with reflectors were widely used—this type lights up the water to a depth of four feet with­ out any reflected surface glare. If you use a gasoline lantern be sure it has a reflector otherwise you will be so blind­ ed by the bright light that you cannot see below the surface of the water.

Lights, if mounted to the boat, are us­ ually placed in front of the hunter. Seal­ ed beam auto headlights were also used successfully: they were usually mounted in fixed mounts on the boat with their rays directed to one side and downward at an acute angle. The larger an area of water that can be lit up the more gars that will be spotted. Old "Scissor-Bill ' Jones came up with what appeared to be the best rig. He had two sealed-beam driving lights mounted side by side on a laminated board—this board was iattached to a water pipe upright withi a swivel so that the angle could be con­ trolled. The lights were further mounted on the water pipe upright so that they could be turned from side to side. The bottom of" the ■ water pipe upright was equipped with a flange which was screwed securely to the boat. It was r -“- a sight to see "Sclssor-BiH” stand­ quite ing up in the boat steering the lights from side to side with pressure from hit knees, leaving both hands free for shoot­ ing. He shot 28 gars in two nights, so you know that there will be plenty of copies of his lighting equipment used next year. When slowly trolling through a school of gars the lights used did not seem to frighten the gars very much.

They moved, of course, but slowly away

from the lights and down deeper into the water. It was not necessary to ‘'lead" the gar before shooting but it was im­ portant to force your bow hand down low enough to connect when the gar was a foot or more under the water.

The tackle used were regular hunting bows, 40 lbs. or over in weight, the shots were so close to the boat that an

extremely heavy bow was not necessary.

The arrows also varied widely—the main difference being in the points used.

A large group swears by solid aluminum arrows, 32 inches long, 9/32 inch in diameter, equipped with a regular hunt­ ing broadhead witli sharp barbs. Other arrows used were wood, hollow alumi­ num shafts, etc. No feathers were nec­ essary on the shafts. The lines were usually attached to the arrows at the nock end of the arrow so that the shaft itself served as a leader for the line.

The small points witli offset barbs were not very practical, the barbs were soon pulled off the points by the strug­ gling gars. A regular two-bladed hunt­ ing broadhead cut down in the back to form two sharp barbs is just the thing —the cutting action of this type of point helps kill the gars more quickly.

A rather heavy line is used, at least 40 lb. test nylon casting rod line; linen line with test of 80 lbs. or more is heavy enough. Some used a 90 lb. test braided nylon casting rod line and no gars were lost due to line breakage with this type of line. One end of the line was attach­ ed to the nock end of the arrow, the line was then wound around a radiator hose, attached to the bow, either above or below the handle section, the line snakes off the radiator hose reel just like a spinning wheel operates. In fact.

Bob Scott had his Par-X bow equipped with an Ashway Spinning reel—it work­ ed perfectly and he was plenty fast on the retrieve. Be sure and allow enough slack in the line to permit the arrow to be pulled to full draw. Other hunters, copying from the old whalers, had a small pan anchored to the boat in which to coil their line. Any method that will allow the line to follow the arrow with­ out drag or deflection will get the job done.

Gars have been killed at a depth of four feet or more with the equipment as described above. It was not unusual to have the arrow completely penetrate the gar and thread him on the line. The • Continued on Page Fourteen

when I missed a beautiful four-pointer at about fifty yards. When I loosed the arrow I estimated the distance to be about forty yards, but when Lou and Arch came by for me in the evening they paced the distance and f.ound it to be a good fifty yards.

Elliot and Ait German were next to miss their bucks. It was the same day that Dr. Godbolt, a dentist from Red Bluff, got his buck. It seems that Gor­ don Burnett had spooked the deer and while its attention was concentrated on Gordon. Doc sneaked up and put a broadhead through it.

Gordon told us that he saw Doc score the hit and knew from the stum­ bling gait of the deer that it would be fatal. And that he had a hard time making the Doc “stay put" instead of following the natural inclination of im­ mediately starting to search for the wounded animal. I have often thought that if I were to get a hit it would be difficult for me to wait, even though I know that it is the proper procedure.

Doc got his deer, a forked-horn buck, after three years of hunting with the bow and we all rejoiced in his good fortune. It must have been a special pleasure to Doc, for his friends had been ribbing him about bow hunting. Some had even promised to carry the “critter" out from ANY place he killed it. Others promised this and that if he ever con­ nected. Of course, none of them ever expected they'd have to pay off! It must have been a pleasure indeed when Doc collected the bets.

Next day Dr. Godbolt visited our camp. We took pictures of him and of those with shirt-tails abbreviated. Art

Irvin had missed a shot to become a member of our elite (?) gang. In fact we cut most of the back out of his shirt making it well ventilated, indeed.

For one picture, we culprits wenmade to stand with our backs to the camera and our heads bowed in shame, while Doc posed with his chest extended with pride. At the last moment we changed the scene to show Doc cutting another slice off my red silk shirt. The extra slice was taken because I admitted passing up a shot at a forked-horn when it came within thirty feet of me.

In the dim light of early morning I was unable to determine that it was a legal deer until too late.

Our gang consisted of twelve archers.

Besides the Lloyds there were: Arch Meekins, Art Irvin and Merle Staub from Auburn; Gordon Burnett of San Carlos; Wall}' Engstrom of Menlo Park; Woody and Billy Riggan, Elliott and Barbara Burton and Art German. We also had many archers visit our camp Audrey and Hardy Jackson of Vallejo spent one night with us; Ted Roeder of Redwood City and Howard Smith of San Mateo were in the vicinity for sev­ eral days and Lloyd English and a pal from San Francisco called on us. too.

After looking over our place a group of San Francisco archers decided to move in. In the party were: Laraine and Bill Wright, Hal Conley, Glenn Rogers and Irving Tjaldeen. Be sure that you are in good standing in the N.F.A.A., and not just your local club, before you shoot that buck. Then do not forget to make application for your big game award within 90 days after shooting the game, and remember that you must apply on an N.F.A.A. form. We never see the application you make for a state award and can’t give you an Art Young Award unless you write this office for one of our appli­ cation forms.

MORE INTEREST SHOWN IN MAIL TOURNAMENTS This year, for the first time, interest in the mail tournaments has remained about the same throughout the season.

This is a pretty clear indication that we have at last hit on a fair classification system. One that holds the interest of the archers in the lower brackets for a season instead of merely’ for the first two or three tournaments, as in the past.

The job now is to sell the tourna­ ments and classification system to a lot of clubs that have never tried either.

The biggest argument in favor of the classification is -that It is already in general use and once it becomes uni­ versally used a classified field archer can drop into any club and feel at home. His classification will put him among archers of his own ability.

What’s Up?

By DR. ARNOLD O. HAUGEN President, National Field Archery Association 122 Pine View Drive, Auburn, Alabama The Fourth National Field Archery Tournament at Pasadena, California, was truly a success in every way.

This is the first time the Association has made a financial success of its tournament. The Executive Committee real­ ized that this year’s tournament simply had to make op­ erating expenses if such contests were to continue. As a result, the tournament was put on a budget which neces­ sitated the trimming of certain expensive refinements and other not so necessary expenses.

The California Committees really accepted the chal­ lenge to make the event financially successful. They do­ nated hours and hours of work. They provided free office help. Some girls worked each day and far into the night to compile the scores and arrange score cards. Yes, they did this without expectation of pay. On behalf of the N.F.A.A. I wish to thank each and every one of those who gave so freely of their time.

Another reason for the financial success of the tour­ nament is that California combined its state tournament with the National and helped cover several items of expense.

Any tournament which shows a profit of $938.34 can certainly be regarded as a huge financial success. $2993.45 $2055.11 SERIOUS LOSS OF DEER IN SOUTHEAST Archers as well as gun hunters in some sections of the Southeastern United States have suffered a serious set-back in hunting prospects. Some strange malady has caused a die-off in deer in Kentucky, North Carolina, Virginia, Mary­ land and Alabama. In one area in Alabama, the Talladega National Forest, an estimated 600 or more deer have been lost this past summer. When I recently visited this area, fresh deer tracks were extremely scarce. It will take several years before this herd will recover to a population level that will provide good bow hunting.

A disease known as Blackleg has been diagnosed in dead deer autopsied in Maryland. The real cause of the deaths in the Alabama herd is unknown but it might easily be the result of Blackleg as has been found in Maryland.

SPECIAL SEASONS IN SOUTHEAST Archers in Alabama have received the privilege of a special 5-day pre-season hunting season. This special bow and arrow deer hunting season runs from Nov. 14 through the 19th in Washington. Choctaw, and Sumter counties in southwestern Alabama. It is in this section of the state where Alabama’s largest deer herd is found. The bow hunt­ ers will have a chance to shoot wild pigs in the area also.

This promises to be the biggest little bow hunt in the Na­ tion. There are now 9 NFAA members in Alabama.

Georgia has provided Southeastern archers with an ex­ cellent opportunity for hunting in a special bow hunt on Blackbeard Island, National Wildlife Refuge, this fall. The season will run from November 7 through the 13th. Ar­ rangements for the hunt are being handled by the Chatta­ hoochee Bow Hunters. You will recall that this is the Island on which one archer bagged two deer in but a few moments last season. When members of the Chattahoochee Bowmen, and archers from all over the Southeast gather for the hunt this fall, we hope they’ have not only’ a good time but good hunting.

By this I mean to have you go into action to make a study of the Broadhead Round and its place in National Tournaments. This essentially is a bow hunters round and insofar as practical should satisfy the man who loves to hunt and who wants a round best fitted to help him get into shape for Big Game Hunting. Because it will be used from year to year in National and State Tourna­ ments where "all-time records” are considered, it will be necessary that some kind of standardization be retained in this round.

The present Official Broadhead Round as set forth in the Handbook calls for shooting distances from 10 to 60 yards with a total distance of 420 yards for each 14 targets.

Next in order from back to belly is a strip of birch, one of maple, and a belly lamination, or facing, of plastic. The latter is a hard white ma­ terial sold under the trade name of "Flight Toxhorn.”

A gluing form 2" thick with a curve, as shown in the drawing, is necessary for assembling the laminations. This This may be built up from plywood or made from solid stock. Of the various meth­ ods that may be used in clamping the

laminations to this form, windings of 1“ strips of auto inner tube are the simplest. If C-clamps are used, about sixteen will be necessary. Hairpin clamps bend 1-1/4" strips cut from 1/8" sheet steel to shape and reinforce with a nut welded on the under side where the screw passes through. If rubber bands or C ;1 x. are used, the under C-clamps side of the form should be cut away at the dotted line and the pin holes omitted.

The wood, of which the laminating strips are made, should be selected for straightness of grain. My method of getting out these strips is to joint one edge of a 2" plank and then rip off a 1/8" strip on the power saw, repeating this until the required number of lam­ inations have been cut. For finishing the strips to thickness one one of the rotary planing heads, sold for use in a bench drillpress, works very nicely.

One lamination strip of birch and one of maple, each .10" thick, together ■with the backing and facing material mentioned in the foregoing, should yield a 5' 2" bow having a drawing weight of approximately 4 5 lbs. pull at 26" draw. .010" additional thickness on each strip would probably add six to eight pounds weight to the finished bow. The thickness of these strips must be held very uniform or you will ex­ perience trouble with the finished product.

Assembling of the bow should pro­ ceed as follows: 1. Scarf the ends of the laminating strips back about 2" to form a joint in the center of the bow, as shown in the sketch, 2. Mount the gluing form in the vise or on the work bench with the convex convex side up. Cover the upper surfacez with ■.■.•'.th a strip of heavy

craft paper to prevent the glue that is squeezed from the joint from working under the bow and cementing it to the form.

3. Sponge off the laminations with water or alcohol to remove any sanding dust from the pores in the wood, permitting the glue to enter more effectively. 4. Coat the lamina­ tions with glue and clamp to the form, the birch strip first, then the maple. A resorcinol resin type glue, such as Cascophen, has proven very satisfactory for bonding the laminations, also for attaching backing and facing. Make sure that all contacting surfaces are well coated with the glue.

In clamping the laminations to the form I use a 2" strip of 1/4“ plywood, cut with the outside grain running crosswise and padded with a strip of truck inner tube rubber. These strips are flexible enough to conform to the shape of the gluing form and spread out the pressure of the clamps. Between the clamps and the plywood I use 1/2" x 2" x 3" hard wood blocks, hollowed slightly on the under side. This further equalizes the pressure over a larger surface.

5. Glue a piece of hardwood, maple or walnut, 1" x 2“ x 17", over the joint at the center of the strips to form the handle riser. Caution: Applying too much pressure when clamping the glue joint is one of the principle causes of failure of laminated bows. Fifty to one hundred pounds per square inch is enough; more will force too much of the glue out resulting in a starved joint. After the glue joints have set, the bow may be removed from the form and roughed to shape.

Laying out a true center line on the back of a highly reflexed bow is rather difficult. One method that works out well is to mount the bow on a flat board or plank by means of two small right-angle brackets. Screw these brack­ ets to the back edge of the board about 12" each side of the center and clamp the back of the bow against the out­ side of the upright arms with small C-clamps, thus bringing the back of the bow at right angles to the board.

Bradford Archers, blazed away to amass a total of 246. with Thelma McCutheon. second, 218, and Olivette Leake, of Rochester finishing third with 211.

The junior division created quite a stir when Laverne Wannemacher, of Eden Bowmen, and Dave Steinhauser, tied at 291 apiece, but the former had 81 hits for first place, as against 77 for Dave. Third place was copped by I Rochester's Bruce Baker, with 273.

Rochester's high score of the day was chalked up by Preston Gardner who turned in a score of 167. Inciden­ tally, “Pres" has shot in only four field tournaments and is Rochester's Field I Group Chairman for this coming year.

Under his direction this group hopes to have a new 28-target course ready for spring shooting. The present range has become slightly outgrown.

The Fort Wayne Archery Club held its third annual Mugwamp tournament on September IS at Franke Park range.

Attendance was somewhat short, due to bad weather. However. 80 archers par­ ticipated and enjoyed the shoot.

The noon lunch, prepared by Mary Wilcoxon. Darlene Causland and Ceal Coe, was enjoyed by everyone. Many­ thanks to them.

Merchandise awards, assembled by Jennie LeFavor and committee, made a grand display.

The Broadhead Round as shot at National at Pasadena.

California this year was changed to agree with California’s requirements that its state tournament must be shot on ani­ mal faces. You will recall that California combined its State Tournament with the National. This was necessary in order to guarantee a satisfactory attendance. The animal faces used ranged in size from a. bear and deer down to that of a crow. Hits in the ears or claws counted just as much as a smack in the head or paunch.

At the time of the last National we tried to get Insur­ ance to cover the Broadhead Round. We found that the cost was prohibitive. As a result we did the next best and had each competing archer sign a statement that he would personally be liable for any damage done by his arrows, including broadheads. Whether such a statement would hold up in court or not I do not know.

What I should like to have you gentlemen of the com­ mittee do is to make a study of the Broadhead Round and make an honest effort to recommend a round that will make more and more bow hunters want to shoot the round.

1 am not personally interested in what the champion Field Target Archers think of the Broadhead or Bow Hunters Big Game Round. Remember that a Small Game Round is being tested for the Small Game Hunter.

What we must have in the long run is a special round for the Field Target Archer, a special round for the Small Game Hunter, and a special round for Big Game Hunter.

When we have permanently established such rounds it will be up to us to defend and maintain them in the face of the archers belonging to either of the other groups. Obviously we can’t satisfy everyone. We should come close to satisfy­ ing eacli group insofar as ihe round for that group is con­ cerned.

Il is now up to you gentlemen to study and to make recommendations on the Big Game Round.

I am neither recommending a new round nor advocat­ ing that we keep the old one. 1 am open minded. It is hoped you men on the committee will draw on all necessary sources of information in arriving at your decision.
