Honorary Secretary General Giuseppe Cinnirella dies at age 74, 4 January 2019 Milan, Italy

Cinnirella was World Archery secretary general for 24 years.

Giuseppe Cinnirella, who served as World Archery’s sec­ retary general from 1981 to 2005 and was better known as Beppe, passed away after a long battle with cancer.

Beppe is credited with transforming the international federation from volunteer-run to a professional organisation.

He became secretary general during the presidency of his friend, Francesco Gnecchi-Ruscone, in 1981 and con­ tinued to serve until the end of James Easton’s time as pres­ ident in 2005. Upon retiring from the position, he was made honorary secretary general of World Archery.

Beppe was also an inter­ national judge, and a technical official at the 1980 Olympic Games, and was awarded a gold plaquette by World Archery for services to the sport in 1999.

Through ailing health, Cinnirella remained engaged with the success of the federa­ tion, continuing to serve on its constitution and rules commit­ tee, and said in an interview in mid-2017:

“I’m still very proud of what archery is achieving. As an archer myself, as honorary sec­ retary general of World Archery, I’m proud of what archery is achieving now.”

by Cinnirella in 1996.

“Beppe’s role in bring­ ing archery into the 21st cen­ tury was vital. Today, archery lost a visionary and one of the greatest volunteers our sport has ever had,” said Tom. “He worked with each of the presidents of the interna­ tional federation since archery returned to the Olympic Games in 1972: Mrs Frith, Francesco Gnecchi-Ruscone, Jim Easton and with our current president, Prof Dr Ugur Erdener.”

“Today, I personally lost my mentor, my second father and a great friend. My special thoughts go to Anna, his wife, and his two daughters of which he was so proud, Laura and Syl­ via.”

“On behalf of the archery family, I’d like to express World Archery’s deepest condolences to them, and Beppe’s extend­ ed family and friends.”

is the second time the Italian archer has won the event.

Sergio Pagni beat-out 23 other archers in the largest shootdown ever to take the compound open championship at the 53rd Vegas Shoot and win a firstprize cheque for USD 53,000.

“I feel great. At the beginning of the week, 1 said I was confident in my shot and 1 was sure to make 900. When I look back and see how many 900s were in the final with me, it was a very long, long journey,” said Sergio.

It is the second time the Italian archer has won the event in four years, having taken his first title at the 50th edition in 2016 from the lucky dog spot.

“Winning as the lucky dog was a surprise, also because I won after the first end,” he added. “Here it was impossible to win on the first end so I took my time and was sure not to miss. I didn’t force the

shot and I was confident with the 10.”

The 2019 luck dog wasn’t so... lucky. Pierre-Ju­ lien Deloche was the first to fall out of contention, missing a big 10 on the first pass of the shootdown, before 10-point scoring moved to the small X-ring.

Mike Schloesser, Levi Morgan, Jesse Broad­ water, Paul Tedford, Sebastien Peineau, Roberto Her­ nandez, Matt Sullivan, Donnie Thacker, Tate Morgan, Anthony Ferraro, Jesse Starks, Jesse Clayton and Nicolas Girard missed the middle in the second pass.

The third saw Stephan Hansen, Sebastian Are­ nas, Peter Elzinga, Rich Jackson and Steve Anderson fall out of the competition.

Richard Bowen and Mikko Juutilainen both shot nines in the fourth, leaving Sergio Pagni, three­ time winner Chance Beaubouef and shootdown debu­ tant Riku van Tonder in contention.

Both Riku and Chance had dropped points in their first two arrows of the fifth end; Sergio shot two 10s.

The left-handed compound archer stood on the line needing a 10 to secure the biggest prize cheque of his career - and drilled it.

down to the compound open championship victor, Ita­ ly’s Sergio Pagni. Chance finished second, Riku third.

Sara Lopez won the compound women’s event, beating out fellow 900-point scorer So Chaewon, 29 to 28, in the first end of the first perfect shoot-off in the category.

“So I’m really and proud. I only shot for one week before I came here. I came just to have fun, to train, to work on my technique and I’m just so hap­ py,” said Sara.

“I always dreamed about this moment. I always dreamed about shooting a 900, about winning Vegas so I think this year will be awesome because it started the best way.”

Chaewon actually had the upper hand, Lopez dropping first, but the four-time Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion from Colombia emerged the winner.

Trevor Silverson won the compound young adult championship and Min Byeongyeon the recurve men’s main event, both in shootdowns in the arena.

Keith Trail took the senior compound champion title outright with his 900-point round, Sim Yeji was the winner of the recurve women’s event with 890.

Dallas Jones was top of the recurve young adult championship and Kristopher McCubbins was cham­ pion in the barebow open competition.

A total of3767 archers registeredfor the 53 rd Vegas Shoot, making 2019 the largest edition of this popular annual tournament in history.

Indoor Archery World Series crowns 1st champions in Las Vegas 13 February 2019 Las Vegas, NV USA

The Indoor World Series inaugural season stopped in Lux­ embourg, China, Italy, France and USA for five stages and a grand finale.

Sim Yeji, Steve Wijler, Vik­ toria Balzhanova and Kris Schaff won the individual titles at the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series Finals, held on Saturday 10 February 2019 in the evening af­ ter the second day of The Vegas Shoot, fifth and final stage of the season’s indoor circuit.

GT OPEN 250 World Archery’s rebranded open-entry indoor circuit began on 23-25 November 2018 in Strassen, Luxembourg when the GT Open holds the first Indoor Archery World Series 250 competition with over 300 archery taking part.

Fourteen-year-old Casey Kaufhold converted her cadet world record - her 589 out of a possible 600 points beat the previous mark, set by Italy’s Tati­ ana Andreoli in early 2016, by a point - and top-seeded qualifying round into the recurve women’s individual title.

Domagoj Buden won the compound men’s competition, while the world’s number tworanked recurve man, Steve Wijler,

and Toja Ellison were the other two winners at the GT Open.

MACAU OPEN 250 The first weekend of December, the Macau Indoor Archery Open counted as the second leg of the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series. Mike Schloesser, Alexis Ruiz, Oh Jin Hyek and Jeon Hunyoung won gold medals and secured the maximum available 250 ranking points towards qualification for the circuit final.

It was the first international indoor tournament to take place in Chi­ na.

Ryoo Su Jung of the Korean professional team Hyundai Department Store set a new recurve women’s world record for the 60-arrow 18-metre ranking round, shooting 595 out of a possible 600 points. It beat the previous record of 594, shot by Park Sehui in Nimes in 2016, by one.

ROMA TROPHY 250 Two weeks later at the 2018 Roma Archery Trophy, third event of the Indoor Series, Canadian Olympian Crispin Duenas shot nine perfect arrows to beat three-time Olympic medallist Brady Ellison to the recurve men’s title.

Kim Surin, Alexis Ruiz and Braden Gellenthien also won individ­ ual titles in Rome.

Faith Miller scored 594 out of a possible 600 points for the 60-arrow 18-metre ranking round to beat the compound junior women’s world record by a point in Rome. The previous record of 593 points had stood for 12 years after being set by Erika Jones in 2006.

Miller finished top of the compound junior women’s event, while Kalle Numminen, Olha Shubkina and Matteo Canovai also won junior titles.

NIMES TOURNAMENT 1000 Nimes in France, the fourth event of this inaugural Indoor World Series, came after the New Year, offering 1000 points to stage winners, before the annual traditional grand finale to the indoor season in Las Vegas.

Janine Meissner, Braden Gellenthien, Kang Chae Young and Lee Seungyun took the individual titles. Meissner shot the best final of the event, scoring 149-points for the 15-arrow 18-metre match in a win over So Chaewon.

Alberto Simonelli’s qualification at the 2019 Nimes Archery Tour­ nament was ratified as a new para archery world record after he shot 594 out of a possible 600 points for the 60-arrow 18-metre ranking round. He had held the record at 590 points since February 2018.

A world record was shot at all four stages of the 2019 Indoor Ar­ chery World Series at that stage.

VEGAS SHOOT 1000 The inaugural Indoor Archery World Series finished on 8-10 Feb­ ruary in Las Vegas. Celebrating its 53rd year, the Vegas Shoot set yet an­ other record for attendance in 2019 by attracting over 3750 registrations for the first time in its history.

The end of the second day at the Vegas Shoot marked the end of the fifth stage of the Indoor Archery World Series.

Archers in the top 16 of the series’ elite ranking after the stage, who have also attended at least three of the tour’s events, were invited to compete in the Indoor Archery World Series Finals that took place during the evening in Vegas.

“It is amazing. My shooting lately has been a bit rough and it’s great to be back on the podium again,” said Steve Wijler, who came back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat Brady Ellison in a shoot-off for the recurve

The recurve women’s final was the most im­ pressive of all the gold medal matches. Both Sim Yeji and Kang Chae Young dropped their third arrows into the nine - and those were the only shots out of the 10 in the regulation five sets.

Viktoria Balzhanova beat Sarah Prieels, 146 to 144 points, in the compound women’s final and Kris Schaff dropped just a single point in his compound men’s victory over Stephan Hansen, 149-146.

Schaff added the indoor circuit crown to the Hyundai Archery World Cup Champion title he won in Samsun at the end of 2018.

The 2019 Indoor Archery World Series consist­ ed of stages in Strassen, Luxembourg; Macau, China; Rome, Italy; Nimes, France and Las Vegas, USA.

One highlight of the event was the Recurve Finals of World Archery’s In­ augural Indoor World Series. This started in Strassen, proceeded onto Macau, Rome, Nimes and on its final leg in Fabulous Las Vegas.

This year, only the gold medal finals would be held in the championship arena. Whereas, the World Series Final Elimination Matches would be held in Hall A/B of the South Point Hotel and Casino. This allowed the Championship Arena to be prepped for the Gold Medal Matches, including lights, sound and camera(s), the action would come later. Rehearsals in­ cluded stand-ins to help make it a polished presenta­ tion. WA Secretary Tom Dielen was busy overseeing the smooth production.

Meantime in Hall A/B, the Elimination matches were underway. That wide shooting line of talented archers was trimmed down to the final four. This is where the bronze medal match would be decided and who would move on to the Gold Medal Matches in the Championship Arena.

The hall was packed to standing room only with still more coming in to see their favorites including the last two Americans standing: Brady Ellison and Casey Kaufhold. Young Casey got through a tight quarterfinal with Korean Jin Yun 6-5 to make the fi­ nal four with three Koreans: Kang Chae Young, Kim

Chaeyun and Sim Yeji. Veteran Brady Ellison once again faced Korea’s indoor specialists Han Jaeyeop.

This time it was Brady who moved forward to the semi-finals (6-5) to shoot against Min Byeogyeon.

Both Americans would be matched against their Korean counterparts. Brady would be matched against Min while Casey would go against Kang the Destroyer. Steve Wijler was pitted against 2016 Olympic Gold Medalist Ku Bonchan while Sim Yeji against her Mobis team mate Kim Chaeyun Korea owned 5 of the 8 final slots, 2 men and 3 women.

Semifinal matches bring out the best shooting in an archer as the winners go on to the gold med­ al match, where one is sure to bring home either the Gold or Silver medal (and the corresponding check).

Whereas, once eliminated in the semifinals, one goes on to the bronze medal match where only one archer goes home with the Bronze. Entering the semifinal match an archer has a 75% chance at a medal and lowers or increases at the set progresses.

With the moral support of the hometown crowd, Brady pulled off perfect 10s to go past Min Byeongyeon (6-4) and reach the Gold medal final where

he would meet Steve Wijler who had pulled an upset 6-0 against Ku Bonchan.

On the other side, the audi­ ence witnessed a close fight be­ tween Casey Kaufhold and Kang Chae Young. Both are World re­ cord holders: Casey owns the Ca­ det Women’s 18m World Record of 589/600 set at the GT Open last November. Chae Young shot a 691/720 to own the double 70m Women's Recurve set at the 2018 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Antalya. A judge was needed to make the call in the course of this semifinal in Vegas.

The next three arrows: Steve-10, Brady-9, Steve-10, Brady-9, Steve-10, Brady-9. Steve maxed out a perfect 30 to force a shoot off. The crowd was treated to an­ other dose of high drama.

Shooting clean is not new to Sim Yeji, at the World Se­ ries 1000 in Nimes, she won the bronze medal match with 100% of her arrows in the 10 ring. Sim has also matched the Women’s Recurve Record 594/600 Indoor Round. She also has the ability to stay within her mental bubble and maintain her focus throughout the course of play. For Team Mobis’ sweep of Women’s Recurve, they would all be headed for a tour of the Grand Canyon as a reward.

For Steve Wijler, his 5 sets leading up to the shoot-off, 10 of 15 arrows or 67% were 10s, Steve’s first arrow(s) had landed in the 10 or 100% but in the top target. However, on the middle tar­ get, only 60% of his arrows were 10s. Likewise, 60% of Brady’s arrows in the middle target were 10s. Given these odds, Steve had pulled the proverbial rabbit out of

the hat with a solid 10 to win the shoot-off.

Clearly, an archer has to shoot close to or better yet, cleanto make it to the medal matches.

As more archers come close to clean, what separates them in a high pressure situation? Dr. Kim Young-Sook, Doctor of Sports Psychology in Archery, says that the components that determine athletic performance are: physi­ cal strength, techniques, strategies and mental state. The latter com­ ponent accounts for 50% of suc­ cess in Archery, higher than in any other sport.

World Archery Crowns Turkish Team 2018 Athlete of the Year

The winners of the World Archery Athlete of the Year awards for 2018 were announced during the 2019 Indoor Archery World Series Finals in Las Vegas on 9 February.

For the second time in a row, the winner of the recurve men’s athlete of the year award also re­ ceived the breakthrough gong. In 2017, that was Steve Wijler; in 2018, it was Mete Gazoz.

Turkey also won the re­ curve women’s award, courtesy Yasemin Anagoz, the para wom­ en’s award thanks to Merve Nur Eroglu - while Goktug Ergin was named coach of the year.

Sara Lopez won the com­ pound women’s trophy for the fourth year in a row.

Nearly 100,000 public votes were cast for the 2018 awards.

The 2019 Lancaster Archery Classic Jan. 2527 was one for the history books. Not only did the number of registered archers - 1,794 - shatter last year’s record attendance of 1,488, but Open Pro ar­ cher Braden Gellenthien accomplished something that had only ever been done once before in the 16year history of the East Coast’s largest archery tour­ nament.

n qualifications Friday at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Manheim, Pa., Gellen­ thien, who is one of the world’s most accomplished tournament archers, shot a perfect score of 660. All 60 of his arrows found the center 11 ring. The only time that has ever happened before was in 2009, when Reo Wilde posted a 660 qualification score.

shoot-up stage if you can’t get through the head-tohead elimination matches. Gellenthien survived his first match in the Open Pro bracket against Andy Cal­ laway in a tie-breaker, but he was knocked out of the competition in the second round by Brian Meese.

Ultimately, the tournament’s top prize of S20,000 was awarded to Open Pro champ Jacob Mar­ low. Always a crowd favorite with his southern drawl and fun sense of humor on the line, Marlow final­ ly won the Classic title in his third trip to the finals shoot-up.

Lancaster Archery, Marlow added a $10,000 contin­ gency check from his bow sponsor. Elite, and anoth­ er $1,600 in contingencies from his other equipment sponsors.

“I’m 1-1 against Mikey in these matches, so hopefully we’ll get a rematch,” Marlow said of com­ peting against Schloesser in the Classic finals.

Other notable champions crowned at this year’s Classic were Jack Williams in Men’s Recurve, Gabri­ ela Bayardo in Women’s Recurve, Michael Fisher in Barebow and Tanja Jensen in Women’s Open Pro.

The Men’s Open division is always the largest division at the Lancaster Archery Classic. This year, there were 317 archers who competed in that group of amateurs. To win that division, an archer has to be on top of his game, and he has to defeat a lot of other really good archers.

“1 tried not to think about anything else,” Mar­ low said. “I just focused on one arrow at a time.”

As his gold-medal match progressed against No. 1 qualifier and 2017 Classic Open Pro champ Mike Schloesser, Marlow’s shots seemed to get tight­ er and tighter to the center. Asked if he was feeling better as the match wore on, Marlow responded with his typical, self-deprecating humor.

“Oh no, I felt terrible the whole time,” he said.

“1 hate the nerves.”

Tim Hanley, 32, of New Jersey this year trav­ eled to the Classic for the first time “in a number of years,” he said, and worked his way to the No. 8 seed for the finals shoot-up. That’s a tough spot to start from, given the Classic’s shoot-up finals format, where the first match features the two lowest ranked archers. The winner advances to compete against the next archer in ranking, and so on until someone faces off against the top qualifier for the title.

In the 16-year history of the Classic, no No. 8-ranked archer in Men’s Open has ever shot his way to the title. That would require shooting a minimum of 84 amows, assuming no tie-breakers were needed, over the course of seven matches.

Wearing a long-sleeve, pin-striped dress shirt, Hanley won his first match, then his second, and then his third. By the fourth round, commenters watching the livestream on YouTube were referring to him as “Tim ‘The CEO’ Hanley,” because of his dress shirt.

In the audience at Spooky Nook, the crowd began ral­ lying behind Hanley as he shot his way through the field. By the time he faced off against top-qualifier Doug Williams, Hanley was clearly the crowd favor­ ite. Everyone loves an underdog, right?

Against all odds, Hanley defeated Williams by a score of 130-127, meaning Hanley only missed two 11 s in his seventh match of the day. He seemed to get stronger, when he should have gotten weaker.

“I had already exceeded my expectations in get­

ting to the finals,” Hanley said. “From there, I just trusted my shot and it turned out pretty good.”

BAREBOW CRAZE The Barebow competition at the Classic has been growing by leaps and bounds the last few years, and this year was no exception. After reaching a reg­ istration total of 125 last year, the number of barebow competitors ballooned this year to 207.

On YouTube, the Barebow finals video from 2018 has been viewed nearly 250,000 times over the past year, generating incredible enthusiasm for and interest in that discipline. For the 2019 finals, the ven­ ue was packed with rowdy fans Saturday night, and more than 1,600 followed the livestream of the com­ petition.

The field featured four new faces on the Classic stage - Ben Rogers, Spanky Brooks, Michael Fisher and Grayson Partlowe. Missing were more familiar names, including John Demmer and Rich Barker, who got knocked out of the tournament in the elimination stage. Bobby Worthington, another Barebow finals regular, withdrew from the Classic at the last minute, due to illness.

The final match between Fisher and Partlowe was a see-saw battle, with Fisher ultimately coming out on top, shooting a dead-center 11 on his last shot.

When his arrow hit the target, the arena erupted into cheers of, “Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oy! Oy! Oy!” That was a nod to Fisher’s Australian home.

NEW RECURVE CHAMPS

The Men’s and Women’s Recurve finals fea­ tured the usual field of heavy hitters. Casey Kaufhold, 14, led the Women’s field with a qualification score of 604. With three-time defending champ Mackenzie Brown knocked out in eliminations, Casey - who fin­ ished second to Brown the past two years - was a like­ ly favorite. However, Gabriela Bayardo, whom Casey had beaten the two previous times the two had met at the Classic, shot just a little stronger in the gold-med­ al finals match, and took the title, with Casey finishing second.

for young archers who might not yet be ready for the full Classic tournament, but who want to get big-time competition experience.

On the Men’s side, two-time defending champ Brady Ellison was the top seed in the finals. In the gold-medal match, he squared off against Jack Wil­ liams who toppled two giants to get to Ellison.

Williams, who is considered a favorite to join Elli­ son on the next U.S. Olympic Team, first defeated multi-Olympic medal winner Michelle Frangili of It­ aly. Next, he took down Canada’s top recurve archer, Crispin Duenas, who was runner-up to Ellison at the last two Classics.

Williams shot incredibly strong in his match against Ellison, with end scores of 3 1,31, 3 1 and 33.

Those scores topped Ellison by two points, and Wil­ liams took the title - his best finish at the Classic.

A total of 375 young archers competed in the event, which was confined solely to Saturday, and which cost a fraction of the money required to com­ pete in the Classic. These archers shot the same num­ ber of arrows as shot in the Classic qualification — 60 - on the same field that the Classic archers shot on.

Archers were divided by gender, by equipment - compound, recurve and barebow - and by age, with divisions for Cub, Bowman, Cadet and Junior com­ petitors. Winners were determined by scores posted in the 60-arrow round. And there were some serious scores put up by these young archers.

“This is a great venue and a wonderful tourna­ ment,” Williams said of the 2019 Classic. “My good shots just felt really strong today.”

Williams and Ellison compete regularly in train­ ing, so they are good friends, yet fierce competitors.

“I’m sure we’ll have a rematch sometime,” Williams said with a wide smile.

Barrs, 25, won the Olympic Gold in 1988 in the men's individual event and the Silver in the men's team event. In 1987 he captured Gold at the Pan American Games and third at the World Championships. He is the 1988 National Outdoor Champion and 1988 NAA male athlete of the year. Chris Yeoman, 17, holds several southern regional and Texas State titles in adult and youth divisions.

Both are members of the US Archery Tearn (USAT).

Parker, 15, the youngest female team member is also known for being the youngest female archer to capture the Pan American Gold in 1987. She took the Bronze Olympic medal in the team event at the 1988 Games and holds many national, regional and state titles, as well as numerous national records, in various divisions. Ochs, 23, was on the winning 1988 Olympic Bronze medal winning ladies team, 1988 National Outdoor Champion and 1988 NAA female athlete of the year. She was a Collegiate All-American In 1986. Parker and Ochs are members of the USAT. Schwartzkopf, 22, is currently a resident She was ranked third as Collegiate AllAmerican In 1987 and has held several regional college titles. For 1988 she was ranked 3rd in target archery and is a member of USAT. Rounding out the ladies team Is Dykman, 29, who placed 1st in the 1986 California State Outdoor Championships and who is currently ranked 9th overall nationally.

The trials competition was hosted by the Georgia State Archery Assn., the Atlanta Sports Council and the Atlanta Organizing Committee for the 1996 Olympic Games.

Cool and windy weather greeted the competitors for the first two days with near perfect conditions for the final rounds of this FfTA/GRAND FITA event.

The team departs for Lausanne on June 28 and will be accompanied by team coach Richard Tone of Gilbert, AZ and team manager Wendy Erlandson of Chandler, AZ. The 35th World Target Championships is sponsored by the Federation Internationale de Tir a I'Arc (FITA) under whose guidelines and rules the tournament is conducted. This event is held bi-annually and attracts international teams from over fifty countries.

The NAA is the National Governing Body forthe amateur sport of archery in the United States. Founded in 1879,'it is one of the oldest sport organizations In the country and is the only US archery organization recognized by FITA and the United States Olympic Committee for the purpose of selecting and training men and women's archery teams to represent the US in the Olympic and Pan American Games, World Championships and other international events.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO.-The 1989 World Target Archery Team was selected May 14, 1989 after a four day trials compe­ tition held at Morgan Falls Recreational Park, Sandy Springs, Georgia. The eight member team selected from over ninety shooterswill travel to the 35th World Target Champion­ ships to be held July 4-8 in Lausanne, Swit­ zerland.

The men's team Is comprised of Rick McKinney, Gilbert, AZ.; Allen Rasor, Atascadero, CA.; Jay Barrs, Mesa, AZ; and Christopher Yeoman, Houston, TX. For the ladies Denise Parker, S. Jordan, UT; Debra Ochs, Howell, Ml; Kristin Schwartzkopf, Litchfield Park, AZ. and Janet Dykman, El Monte, CA. McKinney, 35, is a three-time World Champion (1979, 1983, 1985), 1984 Silver Olympic medalist and 1988 Silver Olympic medalist (men's team event). He holds nine National outdoor titles, national and world records and was a Collegiate All-American (1980-83). Rasor, 76, is the youngest member of the men’s team and is currently a resident athlete at the United States Olympic Training Center (USOTC) inColoradoSprings. He Is the youngest U.S. male to score a 1300, scoring a 1313 in 1988 at the Ambrosiano Tournament In Italy, and came away with a first in the Intermediate, adult men and team competition categories. He is a 1989 member of the Jr. Elite US Archery Team.

The Release

by Rick McKinney, President of Carbon Tech Arrows and U.S. Representative for Win & Win Archery eleasing the string can be quite challenging to most archers. And yet, when you talk to many of the top archers they say they do not even think of releasing. What makes the release so difficult to master, so hard to keep consistent and to make it as smooth as velvet like most of the top shooters?

There can be many reasons that the archer has a difficult time with their release. I have found out that most of the time it is because the archer relates the shot to the sound and/or feel of the clicker. When they hear or feel the clicker go off, their thought is on where is the arrow going. There is more of an unfin­ ished shot because they think about the potential of a 10 or bullseye than the actual finishing of the shot.

It sounds funny and probably weird; however, I have found that many archers struggle with this and yet, they do not know that they have the problem.

Keep the arm muscles relaxed.

Let’s try to analyze what happens with the shot in different scenarios. First, is the archer who starts using their back, but then transfers the muscle activity into their arms as they start to focus on aiming and getting through the clicker. This action is noticeable when you see the back elbow starting to drop down slightly as they are aiming. If the elbow drops down and away from the body, there is a very strong possi­ bility that the archer is definitely in their arms and not their back.

Focusing on keeping the arm muscles relaxed helps prevent this problem. Another solution would be to keep the motion moving as the archer is aiming.

Most archers try to aim too hard and then they become static (or motionless) in order to aim finer. This action is more subconscious because the body is trying to help the aim, since that is the objective. That should not be your objective. Most archers tend to focus on where that little sight pin (or ring) is compared to the center of the target! Forcing the pin to float around the gold or relaxing and letting the pin/ring float could help eliminate some of this static issue.

Another scenario is the archer who starts with their arms and shoulders and consistently stays there.

Many times they will look fairly good at full draw and the follow-through will look reasonable. However, you may notice a lot of forced tension during the shot.

Arms & Shoulders over-used.

This forced tension is ‘good trained muscle’ ac­ tivity to fool the onlookers! It looks as if the archer has great form and follow-through but, in actuality, the arms and shoulders are being over-used and the consistency is not there.

Most of the time the archer will be frustrat34

ed because they think they have good form yet, since they are not in their back, there is a lot of inconsistency in the release. Sometimes the release is slow to come off the string; other times the release is extremely Rick quick.

With all of the possibilities the archer will ex­ perience fairly good groups per shooting end but the groups tend to float around a bit. Again, the archer needs to focus on keeping their arms relaxed as much as possible. Another helpful training tool is to use a back tension release aid. This helps the archer learn something about back tension and not using the arms so much.

Another scenario is using back tension, but in the wrong location. This is noticeable when the ar­ cher shoots the shot and their bow arm and release hand/arm tend to drop down upon releasing. This is because they are into the lower portion of the back (mainly the latissimus dorsi muscle). This muscle is partially attached to the humerus bone, which is the one that flexes the biceps and triceps. The “lats” are not attached to the scapula - the scapula is the foun­ dation of your anchor. The “lats” are attached to the lower part of the spine area. Thus, it would be wise to use the Latissimus Dorsi muscle sparingly.

Remember, you are trying to finesse the shot.

Most people use large muscle groups to shoot while it has been proven over time and again that it is the fine motor muscles that give you the exactness and precision you need for the consistency required. It is easy to use large muscle groups but it is worth the effort to keep them relaxed and focus on the finer and smaller muscles.

Position the Scapula Properly.

How do you avoid this action? A good way to do this is concentrate more on the position of the scapula (or shoulder blade). The muscles attached to the higher portion of the shoulder that, when posi­ tioning the scapula properly, will keep the shoulders down and in the correct position; when executing the release, the ‘release arm’ will come back to the good position that will not bother arrow flight.

Try to focus on trying to keep the tension high in the back (scapula area). You should feel the draw­ ing elbow move up just a little (not forward, but up­ ward). When you execute the shot, the release should be velvety smooth and the follow-through is about as good as anyone can ask.

Then, there is the scenario in which the archer U.S. Archer Inc. 36th Anniversary

collapses upon the shot. This collapsing can be caused by the above-mentioned problems but, also, align­ ment has a lot to do with how the archer executes the shot. When an archer is too over-bowed (too much poundage), holds too long, draws the bow back out of line or does not position the scapula(s) correctly, then there is a very strong possibility that the release will not be consistent or very smooth.

Let’s look at the alignment upon drawing.

Many archers tend to start the drawing away from the body. The draw hand is about 8” to 10” out to the right of the bow arm (for right handed archers). Now, if the archers started with the draw hand only about 2” from the bow arm and mainly just above the bow arm, they will notice that it is easier to use the scapula and that they keep a tight line while at full draw.

release since now you should be in better alignment.

If the archer uses too much poundage (which, unfortunately, is very common) then I highly recom­ mend dropping the poundage down to a CONTROL­ LABLE amount. You should be able to execute your last arrow just as strong as your first arrow. If you struggle just a little more after each shot, 1 would tend to think you are over-bowed and it will be hard to have a consistent release. Being over-bowed is also a strong possibility of injuring yourself. It’s not worth the risk.

One of the training techniques is to shoot 12 ar­ rows in a row without stopping. I personally try to use one continuous motion (load, pull up, execute, load. pull up, execute...). You will notice after 7 or 8 shots, your muscles will feel a little burning sensation. This is like lifting weights. You know you are stressing the muscles and strengthening them for good endurance when using this training technique.

Burning Sensation -Not Pain!

This helps during competitions when your stress level is rather high and you tend to utilize extra energy and fatigue quicker. Notice that I mention a bunting sensation and not pain! If you feel pain and it does not leave immediately after the shot, then chances are you have an injury that needs to be taken care of.

With this tighter line, they will be able to exe­ cute the shot more consistently. Also, this drawing positioning helps lock the front should down (lower­ ing the front scapula into a locked position). The back scapula (drawing part) is able to function properly too, since it is being leveraged down and should end up almost even with the front scapula. Sometimes this does not always happen but, the point is, you are using the scapula(s) properly and this will help the

A good way to find out if you are out of line is by using the specially made training aids that are current­ ly available. The ForMaster (with the rubber tubing) is the one I have recommended to my students. These training devices should be a must for every archer.

They not only help with good alignment position or good execution, but also help to teach the archer to focus properly before, during and after the shot.

wo targets remained in the final round of the 1BO World Championship. Two archers were tied and the tension in the air was strong enough to curl the leaves on the trees. As I watched one of my students waiting for his turn at the stake, he turned toward the target and stood there motionless for several minutes. The target was a fortysix yard javelina and appeared to be a very challenging shot. When his turn to shoot arrived, he set his sight, loaded his bow, and again stood motionless staring at the target. There was no doubt in my mind; the shot to follow would be the best that he had to offer. He shot tens on the last two targets and won the World Championship.

After the last target, I con­ gratulated him and asked, “Were you nervous?”

He replied, “A little, but I kept it under control. My mental program helped me put my con­ centration on making a perfect shot.”

Only one person can put so much pressure on you that you

cannot perform up to your capa­ bility. We all know that person is you. You are constantly being bombarded with distracting stim­ uli that can create pressure such as winning a tournament, shooting a high score, winning a trophy, im­ pressing your friends, or living up to the expectations of others.

Any one of these things can and probably will destroy your perfor­ mance if you give it more impor­ tance than taking care of the task that is in front of you. You have one job to do. Shoot the best shot that you are capable of shooting.

Instead of dwelling on the results of the shot or tournament, put your concentration and focus on your performance. Handling the pressure shot is no different than handling any other shot, as long as you don’t place a more significant value on it. The shot needs to be executed with the same consistent form as you do in practice.

A pressure shot becomes so because your thinking made it that way. Do not let this type of thinking dominate your focus. In­ stead concentrate and focus on ex­ ecuting a shot with perfect form.

This should be done anytime your mind starts dwelling on the results of the tournament, even weeks before the tournament. Many ar­ chers get so engrossed in winning an upcoming event that they raise their anxiety to an unmanageable level before they even get to the first target. Concentrate and focus on what you can control, which

is the execution of a perfect shot.

When you prepare for the next tournament, promise yourself that you will focus on shooting each shot with your best form. That should be your main goal! I am sure most of you can shoot near­ ly every shot with consistent form in practice. Put your focus in that direction, and then you will not be giving the results of the perfor­ mance the inflated value.

Quite often you will shoot a shot that you knew was a ten the instant that you released it. It just felt like a perfect shot. The feel­ ing of that shot is what you want in your mind and muscles when you focus on perfect shot execu­ tion. The perfect shot is a feeling.

Become more aware of the feeling and try to duplicate it while blank bale shooting. By practicing and duplicating this feeling, you are polishing your form and raising your concentration level, so you can duplicate it under pressure conditions. The next time you find yourself faced with a pressure shot, look at the target and picture yourself shooting the perfect shot.

Feel the strong backpressure, the explosion, and the follow-through.

Thinking these thoughts will give you a positive feeling and positive results.

Aiming Without a Sight Barebow

teach a new archers basic shooting form by shooting instinctive, no aiming just point and shoot. Basic shooting form teaches shooting as a sequence, one side at a time. This sequence must be learned as a consistent sequence that the individual must accept and repeat. This is the time to learn the importance of the timing of the shot. You must proceed with each shot step to step in the exact same sequence allotting the exact same time to each step until you have concluded that shot; stance, placement of the arrow, placement of the bowhand, placement of the fingers on the bowstring, pre­ aiming as we pull to full draw, anchor, body alignment at full draw, visualize arrow alignment to the target, drop the bowstring and followthrough until the arrow hits the target. Before you start to add aiming to your shot sequence you must have consistent control of each shot.

Using a visual reference to repeat consistency to hit your target is allowing for alignment to the target and trajectory drop for distance. Some instinctive shooters use a gaping system, 38

they point at an imaginary target above or below the real target to allow for distance and alignment to hit the real target. This is natural or learned but it is very hard to be consistent or shoot a good group where you want it.

That is how point of aim started; some where between 40 and 50 yards your arrow point is visually near the target when allowing for that distance to hit the target.

You are adding a step to your shot sequence, so your timing is going to change or relearned for the new sequence. It is called point on, a distance where putting the point of the arrow at the height of you target center which allows for the trajectory drop of the arrow for that distance to hit the target.

Now for the thinking shooter, point on gives us a visual reference to aim with; it is more consistences at hitting the target. How as our distance shot

decreases our trajectory is less.

The point of the arrow is going to be below our actual target to hit it. We can find that point location through trial and error. In fact the movement of our arrow point as the distance shortens is fairly proportional, like sight settings.

In shooting point of aim you can use all the variations of finger placement on the bowstring, anchor location and hand position into the bow grip or handle as any other style of shooting. What ever you feel is comfortable and must be consistent and reproducible for every shot. Of course as we shoot longer distances our point of aim goes up or higher in reference to the target.

As our point of the arrow goes above our target, the arrow and bow riser can obscure our target, which does not help alignment or consistency. The point of the arrow is a convenient visual reference. At the longer distances so can use the arrow rest and the bottom of the bow shelve as a reference. We are only using the visual reference for our elevation adjustment for that distance our alignment to the target must be held in line with the target as we pre-aim and come to full draw.

Williamsburg, KY - Scholastic 3-D Archery’s membership has grown tremendously since the inception of the program and essentially outgrew the membership and events database that had been in place. S3 DA went to Sport:80 without a comprehensive system in place for the management of memberships and events as the program had previously relied on spreadsheets and offline payments for processing memberships and tournament registrations. As a fast­ growing organization, these processes were extremely time-consuming and there were potential opportunities for the data to not be recorded efficiently or effectively.

The Sport:80 platform is a sophisticated yet easy-to-use sport management system that combines powerful CRM functionality and a dedicated online member portal. By providing both functions within a single system, the Sport:80 platform actively encourages online engagement from S3DA members whilst providing various operational tools to enable S3 DA more efficiency and insight.

Through adopting the Sport:80 platform, S3DA’s members now have access to a variety of online services.

Sport:80 provides S3DA members the opportunity to manage their own profile, renew their memberships, manage and update their qualifications, add event entries, along with a host of other member-focused features. The events module, which has replaced a paper form system, allows for event set-up and registration, e-tickets and payments to be done completely autonomously, again saving S3DA significant time and

resources that can be used to grow' the sport.

S3 DA Executive Director, Jennie Richardson states, “We are very excited to work with Sport:80 and we think the partnership is incredibly beneficial to everyone affiliated with Scholastic 3-D Archery. We have been taking guidance from Sport:80 as they are the experts in this area after having delivered similar projects for a number of national governing bodies including our partners: NFAA and USA Archery.

This process has been an incredibly valuable exercise for everyone at S3 DA and has instilled even more confidence that our membership base will be of great benefit to the sport. Scholastic 3-D Archery (S3DA) Names Jim Sharp --------- archery------ as Illinois State Coordinator

Williamsburg, KY - Scholastic 3-D Archery is pleased to announce Jim Sharp as the new S3DA Illinois State Coordinator. Jim is a businessman having owned his own business, Sharp’s Stone & Concrete, for over 20 years. He brings a wealth of management experience into the position as well as archery and coaching experience. Jim’s goal is to get more schools and clubs involved in archery and to create more structured practices for the kids allowing them the opportunity to develop more refined archery skills.

Jim will oversee all aspects of the S3DA program in Illinois, including tournaments, trainings and designation of regions that will allow S3DA participants multiple monthly competition venues as close as possible to their home location. The state of Illinois is currently divided into six regions. As the Illinois State Coordinator, Jim plans to seek more involvement from Illinois Regional Coordinators.

He would like for the Regional Coordinators to add two new clubs/teams annually and host one basic instructor class per year.

Jim is a very out-going person and has been married for 23 years to his wonderful wife Sheri. They have two daughters Jalyn, 17, and Jerzi, 13. Jim and his family are very active in the S3DA program. He is a current coach of the NCOE Archery team which has 55 student members and he is also a coach for the White County Archery club which has approximately 18 kids. Jim helped to orchestrate the opening of the local indoor archery range in Carmi, IL, which is a venue where practices and Regional Tournaments are held. The range is also open to the public.

Jim states, “I was 14 years old when my step­ dad took me bowhunting. I have enjoyed hunting since that first day and I have introduced the sport to my own family. I enjoy hunting with my wife and daughters. I want to get more kids involved in the S3 DA program to let them know about the scholarship potential if they work hard and put their mind to something that is worthwhile.”

Scholastic 3-D Archery (S3DA) Names Katherine McLean Missouri State Coordinator Williamsburg, KY - Scholastic 3-D Archery has named Katherine (Kathy) McLean as the S3 DA Missouri State Coordinator.

Katherine is a proud 5th generation Missourian living on a working cattle farm that’s been in her family for one hundred years. She helps out with farm activities as needed but her day job as an IT Account Manager for Bank of Montreal consumes most of her time. Katherine stated that she fell into archery quite by accident when her son got involved with archery as a 4-H project. She soon found herself traipsing around the woods with bug spray and scorecards in hand. Once her curiosity got the best of her and she gave it a try, archery became a passion. Her journey has taken many different paths since that time.

She has competed at the national level in the Indoor, 3-D and Outdoor Target disciplines. In addition to competing, she enjoys sharing the sport with others and is a Certified Level 3 NTS Instructor, USA Archery Judge, and S3DA Advanced Instructor Trainer. She has fulfilled 3 terms as the Missouri NFAA State Director, served as volunteer County 4-H Shooting Sports Coordinator as well as many other facets of the archery field. She also enjoys spending time at church.

Katherine is a member of S3DA’s partnering organizations. Katherine will continue to oversee all aspects of the S3DA program in Missouri, including tournaments, trainings, and division of the state into regions that will allow S3DA participants multiple monthly competition venues as close as possible to their home location. Katherine is actively recruiting and hiring Regional Coordinators to oversee and manage individual regions.

Scholastic 3-D Archery hosts Instructor training in Albuquerque, NM

Williamsburg, KY - Scholastic 3-D Archery National Outreach Director, Chris McDonald hosted an Advanced Archery Instructor Training Course in Albuquerque, New Mexico at the Albuquerque Game and Fish Office on December 27Ih. Upon successful completion of this instructor training, candidates earn certification as S3DA Advanced Instructors. With this certification, they are qualified to teach S3DA Basic 3-D Archery Instructor certification classes as well as teach children the skills needed to participate and compete in S3 DA archery events at local, regional, state and national levels.

There were a total of 14 participants in the training and 10 of those participants were New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMDGF) employees.

The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish officially opened the NEW Northwest regional office in Albuquerque on November 15th. The new complex, located at 7816 Alamo Road NW, creates a destination that provides the public a place to interact with staff and participate in educational and recreational opportunities. Director Mike Sloan and others are excited about the new facility and the opportunity this presents to expand the hunter, angler and wildlife education programs.

John Martsh, R-3 Program Manager, said, “The New Mexico Game and Fish Department had learned about S3DA directly from Jennie Richardson while at a US Fish and Wildlife meeting. The New Mexico Department of Game and Fish intends to use the S3DA advanced training that staff received to introduce schools around the state to three dimensional target shooting. This is instrumental for making archers into bowhunters. The program will allow students to shoot 3-D game animals with bows they would use for hunting. We are optimistic this program can produce more young bowhunters around the state of New Mexico.” S3DA National Outreach Director, Chris McDonald stated, “It was exciting forming a partnership with the New Mexico Game and Fish Department and planning for S3DA to be launched under their leadership and guidance. I expect the program to be a huge success in recruiting young adults to the world of archery and hunting.”

More than 100 public schools across New Mexico participate in archery programs during the school day. S3DA would like to further extend the archery and bowhunting opportunities in after-school settings through archery affiliated clubs, sportsmen clubs, archery dealers, churches, fire stations, etc.

“Archery is gaining popularity as a competitive sport among New Mexico’s students, said Brian Guzman, archery coordinator for the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. “Our department is

proud to support young archers and encourage their interest in this challenging extracurricular activity.

Scholastic 3-D Archery (S3DA) Names JR Lorimor as Northwestern National Outreach Coordinator

Oregon S3DAjust hosted an Indoor 5-spot shoot that had approximately 34 archers. With prominent clubs and archery shops in attendance, Lorimor is looking to really expand the Oregon S3DA program this year. The Oregon State Coordinator, Stephanie Rustad, is putting together a Virtual Indoor shoot for March. Coaches will send the students’ scores into the S3DA Oregon Administration to be compiled allowing the western region to start getting together as a cohesive group and promoting growth in S3DA. Multiple clubs are already forming in Washington and Nevada, as well as significant interest in additional Montana clubs. Lorimor is looking forward to assisting all the western states in their efforts to recruit youth into a lifetime of archery and outdoor enjoyment through S3 DA.

In the late 1980’s, he developed a love for archery that he says has guided his life ever since. Lorimor has been married for 27 years to his wife, Carolyn, and they have two sons Kade and Jaret. His family shares the same passion for archery and hunting, which further fuels his interest in bringing youth into this amazing sport. He loves the fact that he can share his passion with his kids.

Lorimor states, “We have been fortunate to have harvested big game throughout the West and Alaska.

Coaching and teaching archery at the club level for several years now has allowed me the enjoyment of getting to introduce new kids to archery, hunting and the outdoors. I look forward to serving S3DA on the west coast, alongside the state and regional coordinators, as we grow S3DA into a solid program out west that will have coordinators and clubs in all of the western states by the end of 2019.”

Kentucky S3DA Hosts East Indoor Regional

KY - Recently, J.C. Nock High Archery Club hosted the Kentucky East Indoor 5-Spot Regional at Jackson County High School in McKee, Kentucky. There were 241 archers that participated in this event.

“We have learned so much with our first tournament today. We are excited about future events,” said Candace Metcalf, S3DA coach for the Aimtakers.

Kentucky State Coordinator, Stacy Groce stated, “Each year Kentucky experiences a large growth in numbers but this year we have experienced a tremendous overall growth in our number of archers, clubs and teams. Just last year, this tournament hosted 136 archers, while today there was a total of 241. It is very exciting to be a part of such a successful program.”

S3DA holds Vegas National Championship in Las Vegas, NV

Williamsburg, KY-On February 7th, 2019, Scho­ lastic 3-D Archery (S3DA) in conjunction with the National Field Archery Association (NFAA) held their 3rd S3DA Vegas National Championship.

S3 DA students from 22 different states met at the South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada vying for the title of “National Champion.” Archers from 31 different clubs and teams across the United States participated in this competition. These num­ bers continue to rise as S3 DA expands across the western US. Missouri State S3DA Coordinator Katherine McLean said, “As a member of the S3DA team, it was an honor for me to provide support at the Vegas Na­ tional Championship. 1 had the opportunity to work with an awesome group of athletes, coaches and ar­ chery parents. S3 DA is opening doors for our youth to develop invaluable life skills. It starts with a bow and arrow, but quickly becomes so much more! Building

relationships, responsibility, integrity.. .all that and so much more!”

S3DA Executive Director, Jennie Richardson states, “1 am amazed at the unprecedented growth of the S3DA program. Never before has there been a youth archery program that incorporates so many different aspects of the sport. Students are hungry for opportunities to participate in archery, bowhunt­ ing, conservation, and the outdoors. We feel that this well-rounded approach will give ample prospects for all.”

The National Archery in the School’s Program Press Release “Two Perfect 300’s, 300 Miles Apart”

“Archers strive to shoot the perfect score. That is our goal. NASP® on the other hand, has perfect archers striving for their personal best,” says Lisa Frye, Kentucky State NASP® Co­ ordinator. Frye’s words come just after, Paige Robbins, a NASP® student who attends Simon Ken­ ton High School in KY shot a per­ fect 300, a rare occurrence in the National Archery in the School’s Program. In addition to Robbin’s perfect 300, Anna Herbert who attends Fowlerville High School in Michigan and lives nearly 300 miles from Robbins, also shot a perfect 300, days earlier—If that isn’t a fun coincidence!

When they compete, NASP®’s more than two million archers, shoot thirty arrows at an eight centimeter “10-ring” or bull­ seye (3.15-inch diameter circle).

The first fifteen of those arrows are shot at ten meters (32.8 feet) and the second fifteen arrows are shot at fifteen meters (49.2 feet).

NASP® archers shoot metric dis­ tances because NASP® is prac­ ticed in countries outside the U.S. The average score at NASP®’s national tournaments with almost

15,000 archers, is a veiy respect­ able 252.

For NASP®’s first ten years of existence a perfect score of 300 was unheard of, indeed many thought the feat impossible with the basic equipment used by ev­ ery NASP® student. In fact, until 2012, the highest score achieved in NASP® was a 298 posted by both a male and female archer.

Then in 2012, a NASP® archer shot a perfect score. That archer was Richmond, Kentucky’s Ryan Long. Michael Downs followed at the All-Nation All-Star tourna-

ment in Nashville, Tennessee. He was competing against the best teams from the United States, Can­ ada, Namibia, South Africa, Zim­ babwe, and the United Kingdom.

Just last year, in 2018, Kentucky’s T. Sanchez also scored a perfect 300 at the NASP® All- Star event held in Alberta, Canada. In addi­ tion, seven other young men have performed with 300 perfection.

We were thrilled to see Paige shoot her 300 and be­ come the first Kentucky female archer to score perfect title. She now joins T Sanchez from Hop­ kins county', in our Kentucky NASP® 300 club. I’m certain T Sanchez is proud to have another join the club,” says Frye. As Anna and Paige join the 300 club, it just shows what hard-work, dedica­ tion, and focus can produce. Frye also mentioned that when archers shoot near perfect 296, 297, or 298s, the students sometimes ask themselves, “Why doesn’t the ar­ row like me?” Grimes suggests, “I’d say the arrow ‘likes’ that ar­ cher very much because to shoot a near-perfect score, bare-bow style without sights, mechanical releas­ es or other common archery aids from ten and fifteen-meter shoot­ ing lines, is no common or easy feat! If an arrow doesn’t like me, it hides under the grass in my back­ yard!”

Jennifer Smith, coach to Anna Herbert, also had some in­ spiring words about her shooter.

“Anna works so hard! She practic­ es more than any archer I know and has been driven to be the best. She was the female national champion last year. Anna, along with a few other of our high school team, has also helped get our elementary program going. She enjoys work­ ing with our younger archers to help them be their best. She shares in their excitement as they contin­ ue to improve. Additionally, Anna is one of our high school mentors, working one on one with a young­ er archer in our program to de­ velop goals and shot consistency.

Anna has also competed in USA archery and NFAA events (though I can’t remember them all!).”

Because shooting a perfect 300 is so noteworthy, there are guidelines that coaches and ar­ chers must adhere to for it to be 48

validated. For instance, the perfect score is only recognized if shot during an official archery tourna­ ment with archers from more than one school attending. Officials at the event have to vouch for the ac­ curacy of the score keeping as do the archer’s respective lane mates and coaches.

So, while Anna and Paige receive their in-school NASP® archery lessons 300 miles apart, their 300 scores have made histo­ ry in the world’s largest youth ar­ chery program. NASP® is proud to recognize them for their hardwork and perseverance in the ar­ chery program.

The National Archery in the School’s Program (NASP®) is excited to invite archers and archery teams from participating NASP® schools, and friends and family to the annual 2019 Western Nationals, that will take place April 26-27 at the Salt Lake City Exposition Center, Salt Lake City, Utah. Salt Lake City is known for its Great Salt Lake and its snow­ capped peaks of the Wasatch Range. It’s also the new home to NASP®’s Western Tournament which is expected to see approximately 2,200 archers, this year.

This semi-new event began in the spring of 2018 to allow archers and their families who reside out west, a more convenient and accessible way to attend and participate at the national tournament. Louisville, KY has been the native host to the national tournament since NASP®’s inception back in 2002, and as attendance was rising, so was the carrying capacity at the Bluegrass’s Expo Center. This was another reason for this popular change. Roy Grimes, CEO and President of NASP® says, “We have committed to and scheduled the “NASP® Western Nationals” for another three years in Salt Lake City. It is our hope this tournament will be hugely popular with NASP® schools in the Western U.S. and provide opportunity for thousands to participate in this “culminating event” that otherwise would not.”

Spectators and participants, who attend this year’s western event, can expect the same range set up and guidelines from past tournaments. The tournament will include seven competitive, onehour flights on both Friday and Saturday. The awards ceremony will be held following the last flight on Saturday. Individual and team awards will

Bullseye! First NASP® Alumni Tournament Hits

Since the first NASP® se­ niors graduated from high school, these archers have asked for an opportunity to shoot again with their teammates and coaches. On March 15lh, 2019 following the first day of the Kentucky NASP® State Tournament, they got that chance.

Nearly 250 prior NASP® archers, coaches and soon to be graduates took aim showing they still love shooting their Genesis bow and are still very good at it. These same archers are the first mem­ bers of the newly formed NASP® Alumni Association. Many of the archers formed teams with their prior teammates and coaches and others chose to compete as indi­ viduals. Seventeen teams compet­ ed for the grand prize of starting a NASP® program in a new school by donating a NASP® start-up kit, valued at S3,200, to a school of their choice in need of a NASP® program. Second and third-place teams won 6 new Genesis bows to donate to schools of their choos­ ing.

The goal of the NASP® Alumni Association is to recon­ nect former archers, encourage involvement in the outdoors, and give back to archers currently competing in NASP®. Kody Ap­ pleby, a 2015 graduate of Hop­ kins County Central High School, touched on this when he said “I’m so happy my team was able to win first. Not just to say we won, but to be able to say we got to help a school without a NASP® program start one is great. Giving other kids the opportunity to be intro­ duced to archery the same way I was is priceless.”

Messing with Your Mind by B. Howard Coffe

Paul writes in Romans 12:2a, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing ofyour mind... ”

When you are asked the question, ‘‘What is your mind?” do you automatically point to your head or indicate your brain?

The brain isn’t your mind.

Your mind lies in the core of you.

It is central to who you are.

That’s why Paul didn’t say renew your brain or acquire more knowledge. He said to renew your mind. Begin to reshape the real you—the essence of who you are.

I know you are asking, “What does this have to do with shooting a bow or hitting a target?”

It has everything to do with your end results when the shoot is over!

For example, there was this coyote sitting underneath a ledge.

You looked at it and said, “It’s 43 yards away.”

Then you begin messing

with your mind! “Well maybe it’s only 42 yards because it sits underneath the ledge. This makes it look a little further than it is.”

You set your sight for 42 yards, and your shot comes in a bit low. You knew from the beginning the target was 43 yards. Why did you change?

You messed with your mind!

A big part of renewing your mind has to do with becoming certain of who you are.

• Do you convince yourself that you are wrong • How confident are you in your decision making abilities • Do you find it hard to make decisions • Are you wishy washy • Do you sometimes lose focus A major part of making up your mind depends on you. You didn’t become you overnight. It has taken several years of learning and growing to get to be you.

your shooting class, you start by working on your mind. My favorite Zig Ziglar quote—I’ve used it before—is, “If you keep doing what you’re are doing, you’ll keep getting what you’re getting.”

That quote so epitomizes renewing your mind than any I have read. Everything you achieve in life or in shooting 3D, must begin with you renewing your mind.

If you believe you can, you can. If you believe you can’t, you can’t. If you can’t decide which side of the fence you want to be on, then you’ll always be on the fence.

There’s much information on the internet about building or renewing your mind. Your life and your shooting will improve as you learn and do.

ATA Rebrands to Ensure Archery and Bowhunting’s Future A uthor: Patrick Durkin our ATA is proud to

logo mission statement that hits right at the heart of our industry.

The Archery Trade Association - which works year-round from Capitol Hill to urban parks to retail shops to school gyms on behalf of bowhunting and recreational archery - is rebranding itself in 2019 to ensure continued growth for the industry and its sports.

Matt Kormann, ATA’s CEO/president, said the rebranding includes a new logo, new vision and new mission statement. The initiative resulted from hundreds of hours of work in 2018 by staff and ATA members to set long-term goals for the industry’s sports and businesses.

“It was critical for your ATA to mesh all aspects of our industry into a single logo, and we accomplished that,” Kormann said. “A year from now, everyone in our industry will know the ATA’s mission, and recognize what we’re doing for bowhunting, target archery, and the entire outdoor industry. We’re passionate about this work. Our rebranding represents all those goals at a glance.”

It’s also the ATA’s first such effort since dropping its former name, the Archery Manufacturers and Merchants Organization, in January 2003 to reorganize and focus on growing bowhunting, recreational archery and industry businesses. The organization formed in 1953 to serve manufacturers, retailers, distributors, sales representatives and other industry professionals.

The mission statement reads: “We exist to inspire growth, increase participation, and preserve the sports of archery and bowhunting.”

Summers, who is also vice president of T.R.U. Ball Archery Releases and AXCEL Archery Sights and Scopes, said the iconic arrowhead in the new ATA logo symbolizes enduring strength.

“The ATA logo is bold and creative,” Summers said. “Its red color represents power, and the external broadhead and internal field point represent bowhunting and tournament archery. Their combined strength will inspire our members and remind them that the ATA is far more than a successful trade show.”

The new mission statement neatly sums

Kormann and Summers said the ATA’s newly crafted vision defines its long-term goals and achievements. The ATA’s vision statement reads: “We work to increase the recruitment and retention of new, current and once-active archers and bowhunters. We are the driving force in defending, educating and lobbying for the greater good of the industry and sports. We preserve and promote archery and bowhunting’s rich heritage to ensure active consumer participation, and successful manufacturing and retailing for generations to come.”

Kormann said the statement also challenges ATA members and ATA staff. The ATA’s professional staff run the annual Trade Show, coordinate archery range and retail programs, work with state and national legislators and wildlife agencies, and promote archery and bowhunting through outreach and education programs nationwide.

“If we’re doing everything right, we’ll bring that vision statement to life in the years ahead,” Kormann said. “We’ll shape and define it through legislative initiatives; recruitment, retention and reactivation programs; and innovative consumerfocused marketing campaigns.”

Summers agreed. “The new brand reminds our members that their ATA works tirelessly to boost our sports, and helps ring up sales for retailers who sell quality products made by ATAmember manufacturers," he said.

The sports of archery and bowhunting are for everyone.

Randy Walk, vice chair of the ATA Board and president of Hoyt Archery, said the new ATA brand showcases passion and excitement for archery, bowhunting and the industry. “It’s a new era for the ATA,” Walk said. “This is a courageous effort to embrace change and collaboration across all segments of our industry. The primary goal for everyone is to grow archery and bowhunting participation.”

Mark Copeland, vice chair of the ATA Board and store director for Jay’s Sporting Goods, thinks the new ATA logo will look great on hats, bow cases and truck windows. “I love the logo and its color,” Copeland said. “The logo speaks to our sports’ long histories. Its outer broadhead embodies bowhunting’s great traditions, and the inner target point reminds us to be disciplined in our day-to-day operations. USA Archery Introduces Lineup For National Indoor Final

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado - The U.S. National Indoor Championships were contested at thirteen locations over the past several weekends with intense excitement and thousands of participants.

Competition was fierce, national records fell, and it all comes down to the U.S. National Indoor Championships Final, March 15th in Cincinnati, Ohio!

This spotlight showdown features the best of the best, as the top eight archers in each category, regardless of age, go head to head in elimination matches for over $70,000 in prize money, with payouts to all places. New this year, barebow archers have a separate gender and age neutral category in the lineup, thanks to generous support from Lancaster Archery Supply. USA Archery was thrilled to see archers ranging from young teens, to masters over 50 qualify for the event as the bar was set high across the board.

USA Para Archers Make Strong Showing at Mexican Grand Prix

Professional Archery Tournaments MONTERREY, Mexico - The Mexican Grand Prix World Ranking Event and Para World Ranking Event hosted archers from nine countries in individual, team and mixed team competition. The USA para squad dominated the open events and brought home lots of shiny hardware.

In the compound open men’s events, Andrew Pike qualified first ahead of 2nd seed Richard Burkett and 4th seed Keith Sekora, but in eliminations, the U.S. trio took the podium sweep. Pike finished with the gold, Burkett with silver and Sekora with bronze.

They also crushed a team gold medal final with a 220-199 decision over Mexico.

Also competing in the able-bodied events, the team again took an impressive gold victory over Mexico’s World Championship team 224-220. Sekora climbed the individual brackets from a 13th place qualification to finish 6th overall.

In the compound open women’s events, Martha Chavez qualified 2nd and finished with silver in the elimination matches. Teamed up with Pike, the duo finished 4th in the ablebodied mixed team event, but smoked a 143135 gold victory over Mexico in the para compound open mixed team final.

Jason Tabansky and Lia Coryell also had strong showings in the W1 events, qualifying 3rd and 2nd respectively, and taking home the silver and bronze in elimination matches. www.usaarchery.org

USA Archery and Olympic Archery in the Schools Program Strengthen Partnership with Growth Initiatives COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - USA Archery and Olympic Archery in the Schools (OAS) are thrilled to announce a new partnership is now in place between the two organizations. The goals of this partnership include increasing awareness within each organization about state championship events, membership, programming and other exciting opportunities.

Created by the Easton Sports Development Foundation, OAS is a unique recurve archery league for middle schools and high schools. Students at participating schools can join their archery team and compete with other teams in the area. The mission of OAS is to promote Olympic Archery in Schools to produce cnaracter-driven leaders and archers.

OAS is a community that introduces experiences, relationships and behaviors that enable young people to develop into healthy, caring and responsible adults.

OAS focuses on Five Core Values: Respect, Competence, Leadership, Honor and Confidence USA Archery and OAS have a strong history of working together. OAS utilizes USA Archery's Instructor and Coach Certification Program for its coaches and many archers participating in the OAS program also participate in a local Junior Olympic Archery Development Club.

USA Archery Welcomes George Ryals IV as Pralympic Head Coach COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - George Ryals IV joins USA Archery as the new Paralympic Head Coach with over 25 years of experience in teaching and coaching archery, extensive experience in archery product design and exceptional skills in team building. A USA Archery Level 4-NTS Coach, Ryals was also named USA Archery's and the US Olympic Committee's Developmental Coach of the Year in 2014.

Coach Ryals has had much personal success as

an archer and a coach on the national and international stage and recently worked with the USA Archery Para team as a coach at the 2018 Para Pan American Championships.

Ryals joins the USA Archery Para program at a critical time as we gear up for success at the 2019 World Archery Para Championships and the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games. As the Paralympic Head Coach, Ryals will focus on competitive excellence and growing a deep pool of talent through recruitment, outreach and education initiatives.

"I am thankful for this opportunity and am very excited to work with the incredibly passionate and dedicated archers of the U.S. Para Archery Team," commented Coach Ryals. ATA, Archers USA Help First-Time Archers

NEW ULM, MN - The Archery Trade Association has partnered ARCHERY with Archers USA to help beginning TRADE ASSOCIATION archers learn about modem 'archery equipment and enjoy their introduction to this lifelong sport.

Archers USA was founded by Dale Morrell, owner of Morrell Targets. The organization helps beginning archers get off to a good start. Morrell thinks successful archers have more fun, confidence and self-esteem, which helps keep them in the sport.

Archers USAalso created the Individual Shooting Code and ISC custom equipment to take archers who shoot instinctively with fingers and teach them to use sights, release aids and other advanced gear.

The partnership also helps the ATA connect its state wildlife-agency partners with Archers USA staff, who can help educators merge the ISC system and equipment into their archery programs. As students learn to shoot advanced equipment, they can try more archery disciplines and next-step programs like the ATA’s Explore Bowhunting and Explore Bowfishing.

“Our partnership with the ATA will propel archery education to the next level,” Morrell said.

“Archers USA and the ATA believe that by advancing skills and knowledge we can promote target archery and preserve bowhunting for future generations.”

The partnership also advances R3 efforts to recruit, retain and reactivate hunters nationwide. Josh Gold, ATA’s senior manager of R3 and state relations, said more agencies are coordinating their efforts to grow archery and bowhunting.

“This partnership helps state agencies bridge the gap between beginner archery programs and bowhunting,” Gold said. “The ATA helps its members by growing archery and bowhunting in their communities."

Other industry representatives think highly of the partnership, and believe it will boost industry growth. That includes Samantha Pedder, business development director for the Council to Advance Hunting and Shooting Sports.

“Industry partners with innovations like this demonstrate the partnerships we can forge for R3,” Pedder said. “New participants usually need equipment, and adding the Archers USA ISC system provides more options.”

Target manufacturer Rinehart has extended its gold-level sponsorship of World Archery for an additional two years, taking the partnership through to the end of 2020.

Rinehart has designed and manufactured top­ tier 3D targets since 1999.

The company brought its reputation for quality to the world of target archery in 2016, launching the Wave as part of a signature competition series.

A custom adaption of the Wave was recently developed to work with World Archery’s laser scoring system and will be deployed during the finals at all Hyundai Archery World Cup events for at least the next two years.
