The Hunting Simulation Organization (HSO) held the first annual HSO World Championship archery competition on January 10th

2008 in Indianapolis, Indiana in conjunction with the annual ArcheryTrade Association (ATA) trade show.

45 of the nation's top Motion Target archery competitors were

invited to compete after finishing in the top 4 positions in their class in each of 8 regional HSO events that were held across the country in 2007.

In the hotly contested Women's Division 18 year old Amanda Sisson from Oregon defeated Mariea Palmer from Missouri for the Women's World Finals title. Then came the much await­

ed Open Class shoot down.The match pitted top pro Tim Gillingham from Utah against lesser known but extremely talented shooter Robby Workman from Arkansas. Gillingham finished at the top of the heap by defeating Workman by a score of 106 to 94 in an extremely exciting match earning him $2,000.00 from HSO and $500 from McKenzie

He was given a crown and rode off as a warrior to win battles. (Rev. 6:2 GWT).

Although I love end-time prophesy, I have never considered myself a dooms­ day prophet. However, several current events would cause one to compare the happenings now to Biblical prophesy about end times.

Perhaps you may not have noticed the latest talks about who owns the seas.

At one point a nation owned the sea off its coast as far as it could shoot a cannon ball. Since newer weapons and modern technology arrived, the boundaries for each country expanded to several nautical miles off shore.

For the past several years, a lot of nations have come together to form an alliance to govern the sea. To date, there are approximately 155 nations that have ratified this agreement. So far the United States has not been one of those nations, but recently the United States, through Ms. Rice, has committed to signing the agreement with the other countries.

In part, the seas would be ruled by the navies of these countries. The countries in this alliance would combine to form a single navy to govern the seas. If this navy

decided that a Maine lobster company was harvesting too many lobsters, it could levy a tax on the company or tell them they could no longer catch lobsters. If an Alaskan fleet of fisherman were taking too many salmon, the World Navy could confiscate their tackle or impose stiff fines against an American company.

Another interesting turn of events that could coincide with the rise of the Anti-christ is the decline in value of the American dollar compared to the Euro­ dollar. Along with the decline of our dollar, the rising price of crude oil has put such a strain on the American people. Currently, we could face a major recession.

What’s scary about our recession is that we are involved in a war. A war held overseas, and one whereby our government officials must borrow money for its support. According to a blurb on Yahoo’s Homepage about two weeks ago, America is going into debt at the rate of $200,000,000 each minute. That’s what the report said, two-million dollars each minute. Is that incredible or what?

Please don’t quit reading my articles because you think that I’m against America and the war in Iraq. I have never been nothing but loyal to the Red White and Blue. If the President asked me to go to Iraq tomorrow, I would pack my bags

and go. I thank God daily for our troops fighting so 1 can write this article without fear because those brave men and women give me the right.

My point is this. The Anti-christ will come to power through economics. He will be able to solve the money problems of the nations of the world, and he will reign from one of the Old Roman Empire countries.

You may ask, “How can you possibly know this?”

Look at the scripture above. Notice the rider has a bow, but something is lacking? That’s right! No arrows. When you practice or compete in the shoots, you usually take, or have on hand, a minimum of two or three bows with you. But the bows would be totally useless without arrows.

So our conquering hero makes war with some other means than conventional weapons of war. Ultimately, this “white horse rider”, the Anti-christ, controls all the buying and selling of goods and services in the whole world. Nothing is bought or sold without the approval of his system. Therefore he solves the problems of the economy, but he controls his subjects with the system he devises.

So the next time you go shoot your bow, remember that soon, maybe real soon, an archer will be riding out to win competitions. However, his prize will not be merely a cash allotment and his name printed in the U. S. Archer. His prize will be the whole world.

Looking Ahead to Bejing

Roy Rose It may seem somewhat early to be assessing the likely contenders for Olympic glory in Bejing this year, but with the World Cup in full swing, and the F1TA World Target Championships now recent history, the probable and possible antagonists for medals have already staked their credentials.

There have been a number of emerging nations in the recurve art who, since Athens, have progressed to the point of real contention. The men’s recurve medals in the individual event, it must be remembered, have not produced the forecast results since 1984, and the advent

of the 12-arrow head to head eliminations has certainly not seen the really favored archers annex gold. Flute, Huish, Barrs, Fairweather and Galiazzo - although fine archers all, and worthy champions - were not the favorites by any means to capture gold, and the surprises that head to head sudden death competition renders may well see many more male recurvers capable of medals than previously was the case.

Because of their 1,350-plus capabilities in qualifying, the Korean recurvers have repeatedly seemed logical medalists, but their efforts in Olympic elimination 12-arrow matches have been less than impressive rendering but a smattering of lesser medals.

It would be fair to say, nevertheless, that their World Cup and World Championship form since Athens has been considerably better in the elimination situations, and clearly their men’s team members - whoever emerges from their selection trials - will be formidable

opposition. Regulars, Kyung Mo Park, and fellow veteran Jong Ho Jang, plus the impressive youngster Dong Hyun Im, would be high on the list of Korea’s likely team members, as would Jae Hun Chung, the 2005 World Champion who seems to reemerge when the stakes are really high.

Anyone of these four could mount a case for Olympic gold, despite their unexpected eliminations in the past.

The Korean challenge does not halt there, with a multitude of high1300 shooters in their ranks, making the quest for Korean representation as difficult, or more so, than the Olympics itself. Often considered - and quite rightly - the supreme recurver in the world, Italy’s Michele Frangilli, like his Korean counterparts, has not been seen at his best in the Olympic arena. It would also be fair to suggest that his form since Athens has been erratic, often superlative on the field course, and indoor on-target occasions as well, but overall not, in any way, dominant. His chances of a medal,

The third of the Italians, Athens gold medalist Marco Galliazzo, is another who has not quite reached that Olympic height these past four years, although he, too, has shown spasmodic glimpses of quality. Whether he can repeat, however, is open to conjecture, and history is against him.

One of those emerging nations aforementioned is Taipei, and their World Cup form and World Championship showings have revealed some class recurvers. Cheng Pang Wang and Cheng Wei Koo. who although not necessarily high qualifiers, seem to have the happy knack of prevailing in the head to head close situations. India, too, has emerged as an upper echelon archcry nation, and their leading shooters, such as Javanta Talukdar, and Tarundeep Rai are very worthy contenders. Australia, under the tutelage of Ki Sik Lee, and now Oh Kyo Moon, has claimed medals in both Sydney (gold), and Athens (bronze). In the past couple of years, the youthful Tim Cuddihy has not quite reached the levels he presented as a junior, and as an Olympian, but his preparation has been interrupted, and with conscientious focus from now to Bejing, his noted form in elimination matches could see him once again on the podium.

The United States status in men’s recurve has deteriorated since the heady days of Pace and McKinney, but to expect talents such as theirs to continue to emerge was never a realistic" possibility. Nonetheless, in the veteran Butch Johnson and the now highly experienced Fic Wunderle, the USA has had loyal

It is difficult, in spite of the prowess of many of the European recurvers, to envision any major challenge to the Koreans or, in fact, the Chinese. Perhaps England's Alison Williamson, India’s Dola Banerjee, and Chekrovolu Swuro. France's Sophie Dodcmont, the United States' Jennifer Nichols, and Taipei's Hui Ju Wu. could cause a medal upset. Only a supreme optimist would wager against anything but a Korean victory in the teams.

The recent World Target Championships have underlined virtually all of the assertions of your scribe, with the surprise being the great return to form of Nataua Valeeva, the Italian's continuous motion, touch-and-go process being suited to adverse conditions. Her victory does, however, show that a Korean whitewash in Bejing is not a forgone conclusion. England's Simon Terry has also made an outstanding comeback and could be a real threat come 2008.

The brevity of the elimination encounters will most assuredly generate drama, heartbreak, elation; in fact, every emotion supreme Olympic competition incorporates.

Let's look forward to the best Olympic Archery spectacle yet. hopefully in fair weather, and undoubtedly fought out in the best tradition of sportsmanship and friendship - areas in which our sport ranks with any on the Olympic stage.

Having already put forward 15 possible aspirants, the list most assuredly does not evaporate at that point. Dutch star Van Alten, England’s Godfrey, Aussie David Barnes, the great Japanese recurver, Yamamoto, plus a sizeable group of European shooters — already formidable opponents at the highest level — guarantees the quest for gold (especially with the pressure of head to head 12-arrow elimination) will sec every arrow shot, absolutely crucial.

The Korean record in the men’s teams, unlike their results individually, has been superlative, and they will once again be strong favorites, with the teams from China, Taipei. India, and Italy the undoubted challengers, with the USA outside chances as well.

In spite of recent strong showings by the Chinese women recurvers, and the fact that they will be competing on home soil, the quality and record of the superb Korean ladies just cannot be denied. Their performances in all major championships continue to be impeccable, with Sung Hyun Park. The Australian Institute of Sport welcomed northern hemisphere Olympic hopefuls to the national capital’s Canberra Stadium in late January for the International Invitational, with 90 of the world’s finest in attendance. Warm Down-Under summer weather prevailed, in vast contrast to the frigid conditions in many of their home countries, with the archers enjoying nearly perfect conditions.

The home country fielded dual teams representing Australia and the Institute of Sports, guaranteeing excellent competition for the local aspiring Olympians. The International FITA format was utilized, with qualifying, followed by the 12 arrow head to head eliminations.

With Bejing looming, all competitors were anxious to make a statement; the top qualifiers sending a weighty message to their national selectors and their fellow medal aspirants, so close to the Olympics.

Aussie archery folk were thrilled to welcome back Ki Sik Lee, our former mentor who brought a group of youthful USA contenders, while Britain sent their very talented men’s and women’s front liners, as did Chinese Taipei and France.

Leading after qualification in the men’s division was the ever-consistent Kyung Mo Park with 682 points, followed by fellow team members Myeong Su Kim, 3 points adrift, with World Champion Dong Hyun Im in contention also with 668. The USA’s Brady Ellison scored 658, while Matt Gray was the best Aussie with 667. Korea had the top 7 places in the women’s ranking rounds with Ok Hee Jun leading on 680 points.

Men’s leader Park lost in the round of 8 to his less favored compatriot Seung Yong Lee, who subsequently accounted for Gray as well to enter the Gold Medal match. Australia’s Sky Kim took out IM to join Lee in the final. No surprise in the women’s head to head with World and Olympic champion Sung Hyun Park dominant throughout the competition. IM shot impressively to take the men’s bronze medal over Matt Gray 113 to 106.

The men’s gold medal match saw Australia’s Sky Kim an easy winner, with one unfortunate end — seeing the demise of Seung Yong Lee, 108 to 92 — adding a further accolade to the young Aussie Bejing Trial event winner.

In the teams, Korea, who was using the event as part of their Bejing selection, clearly demonstrated their place at the supreme upper pinnacle of recurve excellence by fielding dual men’s and women's teams, who duly carried all before them, meeting their fellow countrymen and women in both finals.

Surprisingly, the number two Korean men’s team prevailed over their top trio. which included Park and IM, while the women’s A team nudged the world record in their victory over their second string team.

Congratulations to the Australian Institute of Sports archery personnel, and the Canberra clubs who assisted in making the event such a success.

Lets hope it can become a regular occurrence, as undoubtedly the venue, the weather, and the friendly Aussie atmosphere, impressed our overseas star.

Immediately following the Australian International recurve event was the nation’s leading regional tournament, the Australia Day shoot, hosted by the Canberra Archery Club featuring many of the nation’s leading archers. With substantial prize money an added draw­ card in the open double FITA rounds, competition is always intense, and 2008 was no exception. In the compound class, Aussie icon Clint Freeman was the only major absentee, with the former world champion and record holder taking a year out from competition.

With Bejing looming and Olympic places in their last stages of trials. Sky Kim, David Barnes, Nen Van Aker. Tim Cuddihy. Michael Naray and Ryan Tyack were all anxious to gain ascendancy over each other in the recurve division. On the ladies line Erika Anear (now shooting for Hoyt), the Australian target and field champion loomed as the likely victor, while Olympic aspirants Lexie Feeney, Jane Waller, and Jade Lindsay would contest recurve podium placings. if available after the International.

Day one dawned warm, but with only a light breeze and with such good conditions, good scoring became the order of the day.

Dennis Carson hit the high 90 meters in the men's compound, but by day’s end. National target champion Pat Coghlan had shot his way to a handy lead with an impressive 1381 with Arthur Ward and Zoran in the 1370s. Malynn a 1368. and Dennis Carson shot 1364. Junior champ Wallace shot a very solid 1357 and veteran Jim Park an equally creditable 1356.

the ladies compound field with 13, with veterans Fiona Hyde and Madeleine Ferris in close contention, while Jane Waller’s 1294 gave her a substantial margin in the recurve class; with Feeney and Lindsay resting after four days of International duties.

The men’s recurve group had added incentive with the final Olympic trial in a fortnight, and only Sky Kim an apparent certain selection, and Athens bronze medalist Tim Cuddihy in grave danger of missing the team. David Barnes’ 1319 was the high FITA with Sky at 1314 and Michael Naray a solid 1294.

Junior World Champion Ryan Tyack’s 1281 had him in fourth place, with Tim Cuddihy one back with Owen Van Acker.

With more favorable weather in store, expectations were high for some excellent day-two scoring.

Day two dawned initially quite calm, but very warm and developing crosswinds materializing as the school progressed.

The major highlight of the day was the sensational round

by National Champion Pat Coghlan. The solidly built South Australian, coming off a near world record of 345 at 90 meters compiled a brilliant 1404. His was not the only impressive round in the men’s compound division, with 1380s by Ward. Malynn and Carson, coupled with a 1378 from Wallace and Singerov’s 1373.

The ladies were equally keen to pile on the points. Erika Anear also cashed in on the good conditions with 1377, as did the ageless Aussie icon Madeleine Farris also into the 1370s to clinch second place. Recurve honors predictably went to Sky Kim. with Michael Naray 1339, and David Barnes also shooting fine rounds for the minor places. Jane Waller maintained her winning ways with an easy victory in the open ladies recurve.

In the equipment stakes, the top compounders Goghlan and Anear both shot Hoy I, with a Matthews Apex dominance in the other placings.

Sky Kim and Jane Waller, the recurve stars, also shot Hoyt, but the remainder of the top contenders were spread evenly between WIN and WIN and Samick. XIOs arc the almost unanimous choice for both recurve and compound elite shooters.

Leigh Cornish, one of the nation’s great veteran archers, continues to shoot amazing scores, and his Titan scopes were the preferred item on many of the compound bows on the line.

All in all, a great week of archery in the national capital, well covered by the media, and as always excellently managed by the host club. (y-

More European Archery Champions

Morgan Lundin Giant young Englishman Chris White is well known to the American archery fraternity as a result of his always impressive scoring at Las Vegas. In Europe he is regarded, rightfully, as one of the finest male compounders in the world, and his mix of World and European championship wins justifies his status. He is particularly proficient both indoors and out — his World Field Championship win in 2004 underlining his skill in that area as well. With a 1405 tournament FITA, world records at 70 meters, and a number of perfect 360 field rounds, his scoring credentials are the equal of any on the planet.

A very tall, solidly built athlete, Chris shoots for Matthews using an Apex 7 for target, and their switchback model on the field course drawing 58 pounds with BCY 452 strings and cables. His arrows are 291/2 inch XI0 Pro Tours for target and field, and X7 2315s and 2613s indoors. His stabilization consists of a 40 inch Doinker carbon rod with 10 inch Easton side rods.

He favors a Sure-Loc sight with a Black Eagle Scope and his release is a Carter Just Cuz, and his rest a Trophy Taker with a .8 blade. Still a young man - he has represented England since his teenage years - he will certainly continue to be a significant force on the world archery scene for decades to come.

Following in the footsteps of his illustrious countryman is England’s latest whiz kid Liam Grimwood, whose junior

career included a world record 342 at 90 meters which still prevails. Lacking Chris’ size and height, this young archer nevertheless has already stamped his mark at the highest level, with quality FITA scores at this year’s World Cup events.

If his inaugural year in the senior ranks is any indication, his results in the years to come could sec the youngster mirror not just his famous countryman’s equipment rundown, but his status as a world class competitor, as well.

Germany’s Silke Hoettecke rose to prominence in 2006 with her gold medal performance at the World FITA Field championships, and has added to those credentials with a similar result in the first Cartel Pro event in 2007. An attractive, athletically proportioned compounder, her outstanding efforts on the field course have not as yet been repeated in the target arena, but clearly a shift of focus in that direction would produce almost immediate results. Her bow is an Archery Research A R34 set at 48 pounds at her 26 inch draw length, with BCY strings and cables and a Golden Premier GK rest and a .01 Best launcher. Her arrows of choice are Easton Navigation 710s with pin nochs, 187 Flex Fletch vanes, and 70 grain points. She uses a Super Scope 0.5 and a three-finger Fits Me Too Carter release. Her stabilizer is a single Doinker Fatty Elite, 32 inches long.

Silke Hoettecke is yet another name now in focus in the European archery scene, and her future seems assured as an elite field exponent, and possibly in the target realm in the not too distant future.

Finally, a Junior who is already establishing himself as Europe’s more promising recurver, Christian Weiss of Germany. The 19 year old recently established a European record with a 90 meter score of 316, and a 1332 FITA. At 135 pounds and 5 ft. 9 inches tall, this young man has plenty of growing to come, but already he is holding a Sure-Loc QuestX sight, and shooting an elite tab.

His string is a 17 strand Fast Flight, and his clicker and plunger button both Beiter products. Christian uses a 32 inch Beiter long front rod stabilizer with V-bar, and 8 inch side rods. With a regimented training schedule supervised by some of Germany’s best, including Sandra Sachse, this youngster clearly will be a name very likely to emerge in the next decade.

Sweden’s Magnus Petersson emerged as one of the world’s best recurvcrs over a decade ago, and he is well known to the U. S. Archery fraternity as a result of his continuing successes in the Las Vegas tournament. After a relatively quiet couple of years he has reemerged decisively in 2006 and 2007 with strong showings in the World Cup and the FITA Outdoor World Championships. He is presently ranked fourth in the FITA World ratings.

Magnus is a solidly built, right arm shooter with a distinctive side anchor at the corner of the mouth. His bow of choice is a Hoyt Helix — drawing 50 pounds outdoor, equipped with a Sure-Loc 9 inch extended sight, a Beiter plunger, and the traditional V-bar stabilizer set up of a 32 inch Easton long rod. and twin 10 inch side rods. He shoots Easton XIOs with Spin Wing vanes, and a Cavalier tab. Although he has won National field titles in his native Sweden, he concentrates mainly on target events, with an impressive record indoors as his repeat performances at Los Vegas certainly verify. His long experience and excellent head-to-head composure suggests he is one who could quite easily medal in Beijing come the 2008 Olympics.

Now that he has innumerable National titles, a World indoor crown, and multiple victories at Las Vegas, this unassuming Swede who tends to understate his practice sessions is back in major contention, and a force to be reckoned with.

He has long been a diligent practicer. and his outgoing amiable nature has endeared him to archery lovers worldwide. where he is always ready to pass on advice, share a joke, or sign autographs for young admirers. His younger sister is also an emerging talent.

Should his 2008 Bejing appearance yield gold, it will be a popular and deserving reward for this fine Italian archer.

His shooting style somewhat resembles that of his famous compatriot De Buo, with his bulky physique producing a strong draw to a very central anchor, and a typically Italian short release, which can appear suspect, but which serves him well on the scorecard.

Since the Olympics in Athens, he has switched from a Hoyt to a Samick set up with a Masters riser and Extreme limbs giving him a near 50 pound draw.

He employs the traditional recurve stabilization set-up of long front rod, V bar, and short side rods, ACE and X10 shafts and Spin-Wing vanes.

No archer has, as yet, managed a repeat Olympic victory; in fact, none of the men’s winners have even proceeded to a subsequent medal, so Marco will need to create history in order to figure in the medal count in Bejing. His recent form does not suggest that he is a major contender, yet the same could have been said in 2004, and he does have four years of continuing International competition now on his side.

The burly Italian veteran Ilario De Buo continues to defy Father Time by matching it with the world’s best recurvers, many of whom arc less than half his age.

With World Indoor Title and World Cup performances, which took him to the

finals in 2006, the jovial Italian has been a longtime teammate of his more illustrious friend Michele Frangilli; yet his record over decades compares favorably with his younger compatriot. It is not common knowledge that De Buo’s representative career stretches back to the early 1980s; nonetheless at a time when virtually all recurvers his age would be contesting Masters’ events at a less elevated level, the giant Italian is still a major force at the elite level. As one would expect with his powerful physical presence, his form is a no-nonsense strong, economical draw, and an apparently variable release, which continues to dispatch a high majority of 10s and 9s.

His third place World ranking in 2007 speaks for itself, and he is highly regarded by his fellow competitors, especially in less-than-favorable conditions where his powerful frame is a decided advantage, as is his strong clicker motion. He now shoots a Samick Masters riser with Extreme limbs, drawing 54 pounds, and utilizes the long rod, V bar with sort side rods, which is now the norm at the top level.

Italy has produced a number of world class compounders to augment their roster of recurve champions, particularly in the last decade, with Antonio Tosca, Mario Reule, and Michele Palumbo - just three who spring immediately to mind.

Their leading field compounder in the past four years has been the tall and solidly-built (that seems to be an Italian trait) Antonio Pompeo. He has regularly appeared as part of the Italian Team at the World and European FITA Field titles, along with Frangilli, and barebowers Mario Orlandi and Guiseppe Seimandi; in fact, he was the 2007 European 3D champion. More dominant on the field course, with Sergio Pagni carrying the flag in the Indoor and Target arenas for Italy, Pompeo is a Matthews Apex 7 shooter with a 34 inch Beiter long rod, and a 10 inch side rod, X10 Easton Shafts, with Bohning Mini Blazer fletches, a Carter release, and seems certain to continue to be part of the formidable Italian team presence in future International events.

Guiseppe Seimandi is a young Italian barebow exponent who, fresh from World Junior field competition in 2004, returned in 2006 to do what no bare bower had been able to achieve for a decade and a half, by displacing the top Swedes, Mathias Larsson and Erik Jonsson, from the top podium position. Filipino Compound Archer shines in Asia

by Bernard Yap Earl was 17 years old and the youngest Filipino compound archer to win the 2001 Philippine National Open Championships. Now at age 23, He had more than 30 Gold Medals in his medal collection among which are one 2007 Asian Championship gold medal; five 2006-2007 Asian Grand Prix gold medals and two South East Asian Championship gold medals and several silver medals from these international tournaments in Asia.

His name is Earl Benjamin Jacinto Yap or simply Earl, as most people would call him. He is the third sibling of Bernard and Evelyn Yap. Bernard was the Philippine’s Instinctive archer champion and record holder in the mid 80’s. Because he was a champion, he thought of introducing archery to his four children. So in the early 90’s, he hired an archcry instructor to teach the fundamentals of archery to his three older children who were then aged nine, seven and five. Little did he know that one of his sons, Earl, would someday follow his footstep and take archery seriously.

Growing up, Earl would tag along his father to Field tournaments where he had a grand time running around the field and asking other archers a lot of questions.

One summer, at age 12; Earl decided to go over the family stockroom and he found some old compound bows of his Dad. He asked permission to use them and soon, he started shooting again and won second place in his first Barebow Archery tournament.

He was then 14 years old. Earl wanted to continue shooting Barebow compound but his father convinced him to move on to FITA because they have more tournaments.

At age 17, Earl was allowed to compete against the adults and became the youngest Philippine Men’s Compound National Open Champion beating a field of competitors some of whom were twice his age. He became a member of the national team on the same year and was a member of the March-April 2008

A college degree was more important to Earl and archery was set aside. In 2005 he graduated from college with a degree in Production Design. Almost immediately, he qualified for the 2005 Philippine team that won silver awards in the 2005 SEA Games.

that his father decided to sponsor his trips to international tournaments and soon Earl began his winning streak in Asian tournaments. His winning scores encouraged other Asian archery contemporaries to raise their skills to a higher level. They consult and listen to Earl’s advices and because he is the first Asian men's compound archer to win several gold medals in succession; they idolize him and look up to him as a world model.

In Earl’s latest victory at the 2007 Asian Championships in Xian, China; he shoot a 351 and 348 to finish fifth in qualifying round of the double 70 tournament that see top compound archers from Asian countries including Iran. Malaysia, Korea, Japan, China, Taipei, Indonesia and other nations. In his semi-final Olympic match against Rcsa Zamaninejad of Iran; who himself was a runner-up in the first leg of the 2007 World Cup tournament; the match was tied all the way to the last arrow with Earl finally winning by a slim single point (113-112). In his final match against Kim Dong Kyu of Korea, They tied at 29 on the first end and Earl went ahead by three points on the second end on a mistake by the Korean. In the succeeding ends, the Korean improved his effort and tried to catch up but Earl never looked back as he matched the Korean in points production and end the match at (116-113).

Now, at age 23, Earl has raised the standard and scores in Men’s Compound Archery both in Philippines and in Asia. Earl broke all Philippine records and several Asian compound records on his road to win several gold medals in Asian Archery Grand Prixs and Championships. Scores in Qualifying and Olympic rounds has reached new highs and in the recent Asian Archery Championships, both Resa and Kim either matched or broke Earl's record for the 70 meters. It is a sign of more interesting and challenging things to come and expect from Asian Compound Archers.

the development of archery in Mexico due to its outstanding facilities as well as the Director of the Baja California Sports Institute Saul Castro who has made a commitment to offer his full support in order to make the Athletic Training Center in Tijuana Mexico, the cusp of athletic development in archery to all of North America.

For many years Korea has distinguished itself for being the country with the most outstanding results in all international events especially the Olympics where they have produced the most Olympic champions to date.

With a nationally sponsored program that begins at elementary school up to university, archery in Korea is the national sport for which every athlete participating in this sport is considered a professional and the pride of their country.

In Korea there are several training centers where you can only practice archery and there arc over 250 trainers that can be considered national coaches who have also trained several national teams in other countries such as Mexico, The United States, England, India and many other countries who’s goal as of now is the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.

It is here in the cusp of archery worldwide where the trainers from Mexico traveled to provide the coaches with the highest quality of information and where FITA certified those coaches upon completion of the course.

The seminar spanned 5 days and counted on the participation of 82 trainers from around the world. It was an intense schedule starting from 9:00 a.m. and ended at 9:00 p.m. and though the hours were long the enthusiasm was clearly noticeable.

During the seminar Mr. Kim spoke about Archery Techniques that he utilizes in his archery school in Korea as well as explaining in detail the teaching method that is used in this country to train archers from as early on as 8 years old.

We also had the opportunity to listen to the Champion Eun Kyung LEE speak about the process, preparation, participation and qualification for the Olympic Games. Without a doubt a topic of much interest because it lent us the opportunity to hear directly from an National athlete what it takes to make it to such a high ranking level. This was an especially important because it allowed all the coaches to hear in detail how important discipline and sacrifice arc.

Another important topic was physical preparation, a topic that was presented by Mr. Kyung Tak CHOI who has trained several national teams and explained the proper from to perform exercises and how each exercise applies specifically to the sport of archery. Mr. Choi has specialized in training high level athletes like those assisting world tournaments and Olympic Games.

It was undoubtedly an excellent opportunity for all those assisting to know the details of how exercises apply to archery.

Ed Tapper from Elm, NJ Ed Tapper is a 66 year old amputee, off above the elbow. He lost his arm racing motorcycles on a 1/4 mile track in Maple Grove PA in 1977. Ed is also a member of PCBA (Physically Challenged

Bow Hunters of America) program. He has hunted deer in New Jersey and West Virginia and has also hunted antelope in Wyoming through the PCBA. He shot a recurve back in the 60’s but gave it up for years. After years of varmint hunting with a rifle he became interested in archery again after a friend invited him to do some archery hunting in 1986.

In 2002, Ed, who lives in Elm NJ, found The Fletcher’s Corner in Cape May Court House. That’s where he started shooting a compound bow. He started working with drawloks and with lots of ingenuity and hard work he finally came up with mechanical triggers and then progressed to vacuum triggers.

His newest bow is a Bowtech Airborne with his own modifications. Ed shots a 28 '/a full draw 71 lb bow. He now shots in a competition league at Fletcher’s Corner. Two weeks ago he shot a double Robin Hood during the league’s shoot.

Which State will be Last to Adopt the NASP?

January 9, 2008 By: Roy Grimes, President, NASP New York won’t be the last state to adopt the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP)!

At 9:02 pm on February 20, 2003 a middle school technology teacher from Kingston, NY contacted us about adopting the NASP. Since that first contact the NASP received calls from nearly four dozen NY teachers, as well as archery enthusiasts and parents wanting the program available to their students.

As has been the case in the previous 43 NASP states. Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan, and Victoria, Australia, we were reluctant to launch the program until it could be institutionalized by a government agency. In most stales this has been the wildlife conservation agency. In Nova Scotia the coordinating agency is the Ministry of Education and the Saskatchewan Wildlife

Federation leads the NASP there. This past spring, Wayne Jones, Hunter Education Coordinator for the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) reported that his agency was ready to launch and lead the NASP in New York.

We provided Wayne the school contacts we’ve received over the past few years. Several of our contacts were recently acquired at the national conference of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) in Baltimore, Maryland. Wayne invited teachers from 10 of these schools to attend NASP training in Auburn, New York on January 7, 2008. Before the teachers could be trained, 11 “teacher trainers” were certified at Wildwood Sports Club in Elbridge, NY. These folks came from all walks of life; archery clubs, NY State Archery Association, NY Bowhunters, Copper John Archery, and a couple were school teachers.

Basic Archery Instructor Trainer candidates (BAIT teacher trainers) arrived at the sports club to set up the NASP archery range on Friday, January 4th. On Saturday, the 1st day of BAIT instruction, the candidates took the same course the teachers would take on day 3. The next day the BAIT candidates practiced teaching the basic material to each other. They had to perform several practical exercises and take two written examinations. At the end of day 2 we dismantled the range and moved it to a local school gymnasium so the teachers could be taught in the same environment they would present archery lessons to students.

This group of New York teachers was an unusual for a pilot program. All but one of them was already teaching archery of some form at their school. One was a new teacher who took archery from another of the veteran teachers in the group. A few of these teachers were already using NASP-style equipment but most were using fiberglass bows. All were enthusiastic to receive NASP's standard training and to use NASP archery equipment in their future archery classes.

In a few short weeks each of these schools will receive a NASP equipment kit and begin presenting NASP archery lessons to their students. The New York NASP is already making plans to expand their program in the next 30 days. The next states to join the NASP will be Connecticut. Massachusetts, and New Mexico. All three will join the program by undergoing an identical standard process.

candidates presented the Basic Archery Instructor course to 18 teachers from 10 NY pilot schools. We divided the archery range in half and two pairs of teacher trainers presented the material to half the class at the same time. The teachers first learned how the NASP works and why it is so safe. Then they were taught how to set up a safe archery range in their gymnasiums. We began teaching them how to shoot a bow by determining dominant eye, making each a String Bow training device, and then learning the Eleven Steps to Archcry Success. Before actually shooting bows and arrows the teachers were taught how to observe an archer and how to compliment, positively correct, and review an archer (CPR) and how to manage disruptive students. While training teachers are required to use only positive language. For instance, when explaining the problem with “dry-firing” a bow, they say, “Only shoot a bow when there is an arrow nocked on the string and the bow is pointed in a safe direction towards the target. To shoot a bow without an arrow is called a ‘dry fire’ and this can damage the bow and hurt the shooter or a bystander.”

Notice, words such as “never, “no”, and “don’t” are unsuitable.

‘Refrain from’ and ‘avoid’ are high class negative words that are also disallowed.

After seeing a demonstration of the whistle commands and shooting the bow using the Eleven Steps, the teachers undergo supervised shooting. Next, each teacher performed a practical exercise demonstrating how to safely operate an archery range, shoot the bow using eleven steps, and to supervise an archer’s shooting and retrieval of arrows. Lastly, just before the final exam, teachers are taught the names of bow and arrow parts, equipment inspection, and basic maintenance and repair of the bow and arrow. Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation students and instructors enjoying archery The Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation in South Central South Dakota is one of the newest locations to begin implementation of the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). On February 18, 2008 three Native Americans from the legendary tribe, “Sicangu Oyate” completed a workshop to become “Basic Archery Instructor Trainers” for the 1-year old South Dakota NASP. Organization of this training workshop was accomplished by, Curt Robertson the NASP Coordinator for the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. The training was conducted at the Georgia Morse Middle School gymnasium in Pierre, South Dakota (pronounced “Peer, South Dakota” for all you Frenchinfluenced readers). Joining the 20 South Dakota volunteers and teachers at this workshop was the new NASP Coordinator for Wyoming, Zack Sexton and veteran NASP Coordinator for Minnesota, Kraig Kiger. Both Zack and Kraig were upgrading their training to expand their home programs.

A unique flavor to this workshop was provided by the enthusiastic participation of three residents of the Sicangu Oyate tribe on the Rosebud; Kevin Decora, Julius Walking Crow, and Melvin Hollow Horn Bear. Kevin explained the tribe’s name means “burnt thigh people” and is used to record a significant incident in the tribe’s history. According to elders, early in their history a rival tribe tried to kill them by setting fire to the land where they lived. An ingenious grandmother advised everyone to lie down and cover themselves with dirt to ward off the fire.

Apparently, as they lay on the ground covered in dirt, some were burned on the thighs. According to legend, only those who took her advice survived the attack. Kevin, Melvin, and Julius were popular with instructors and fellow trainees as they had fun but took the training very seriously. Kevin had recently begun shooting a bow, while Julius and Melvin remembered shooting as youngsters using bent, sinew reinforced willow stick bows made by their uncles. All were preparing themselves to take the

Kevin reported that archery interest has been kept alive for their youth due to efforts by Rosebud archers Mike One Star Sr. and Gary Hacker. As new NASP trainers, Kevin, Melvin and Julius look forward to taking modern equipment and proven teaching and shooting techniques home to build upon the good work of Mike and Gary.

Kevin, who is earning a Master’s Degree in clinical psychology and mental health, has very high hopes for the influence NASP can have on the futures of local youngsters.

Kevin and Melvin Kevin explained that suicide rates, alcohol and drug abuse, violence, and neglect are all too high on the Rosebud. Kevin said, “We really wanted to bring a program into our communities that could work for all kids at all athletic levels. We also wanted a program that was safe and showed success in working with youth in the communities. The NASP covers all these areas. If we can get this program going we might be able to change the lives of some young people. Hopefully, we can get them down the right road.”

Every NASP training workshop is special and unique in some way. The new state, provincial, or country launches of the NASP are exciting because these are further proof that everyone working in or supporting the NASP is on to something special.

Follow-up or advanced NASP workshops are exciting because they are indicative of a NASP effort preparing to accelerate expansion into more schools for thousands more students. This mid-February workshop in “Peer”, South Dakota will always be memorable to me because of Curt Robertson’s attention to organizational details and Kevin, Melvin, and Julius. I could not help wonder at the irony bf the situation. As the first archer in my lineage I’ve started a tradition of archery in my family.

Kevin, Melvin, and Julius were pretty “normal” NASP trainees during most of the three days. They learned and practiced becoming Basic Archery Instructor Trainers (BAIT).

They were enthusiastic, eager to shoot, and willing to change some archery habits and toss out a few form myths they had picked up over time. However, their demeanor changed when it came time, on day two, to see if the pressure of mock competition could break their archery form, shot execution, or follow-through. Melvin pinned his long black hair back with a headband, Julius melded into some type of trance, and Kevin...well Kevin kept on being Kevin, not able to stop joking and poking fun, even in the heat of battle! Kevin focused on the “Eleven Steps to Archery Success” and made sure to “paint his face” when following through after dropping the bowstring.

Melvin appeared to mumble something as his archer’s hook was anchored in the corner of his smile - some of us accused him of calling the target closer. Julius, handled his arrows with 94

The 2008 ATA Trade Show’s return to Indianapolis and the industry’s core audience met or exceeded expectations Jan. 10-12 by packing the Indiana Convention Center with 8,184 attendees, the second largest crowd in the show’s history.

The event also featured two Indy records: 495 exhibitors and a 300,000-square-foot show floor; and show records: 159,350 square feet of rented booth space and 951 attendees at the pre­ dawn educational seminars.

"We were thrilled to be back in Indianapolis, which is the heart of the archery and bowhunting world,” said Cindy Brophy, manager of the ATA Trade Show. “Numbers like those keep the ATA Trade Show in the nation’s top 200 trade shows in terms of size and attendance,” she said.

“But to better visualize the size of this show, start by realizing the show’s smallest booth measures 10-by-10 feet, or 100 square feet. At the ATA Show, the average size booth covers 322 square feet, three times that size.”

And what about those 495 exhibitors’ booths? “If you set out to visit each one of those booths during the three-day, 27-hour show, you would need to limit each visit to three minutes and 15 seconds," Brophy said. “That’s not much time if you want to see it all, which highlights the competitive nature of the show and the importance of having a game plan when you show up.”

The 2005 ATA Trade Show in Indianapolis holds the record for total attendance with 8,199, only 15 more than the number for this year's show. No. 3 in total attendance was the 2002 show in Nashville, which drew 8,116. This year’s attendance was 775 more than last year's show in Atlanta, 7,409, a 10.5 percent increase.

The Indy-rccord 495 exhibitors - a 3.5 percent increase from the 478 exhibiting at the 2005 Indy show — rented 2.5 percent more floor space than the previous record of 155,500 square feet at the 2006 Atlanta show. Further, this year’s rental space was a nearly 10 percent increase from space rented for Atlanta in 2007, 145,100; and Indianapolis in 2005, 145,400. This year's total of 495 exhibitors fell four shy of the record 499 at the 2006 Atlanta show.

Special Events a Hit The 2008 ATA Trade Show also enjoyed its largest attendance ever for its increasingly popular morning seminar scries. The official attendance for the daily seminars, which begin all three days at 7:30 a.m., was a record 951, a 2 percent increase from the 932 who attended the 2007 seminars in Atlanta, and a 5 percent increase from Indy’s previous high. 908 at the 2004 trade show.

“It’s clear that archery dealers want to learn all they can to provide quality customer service and efficient ways to improve their bottom lines,” said Bob Ives, the ATA’s director of member services. “We carefully review the seminars every year and look for ways to provide the training and advice dealers want.”

Also drawing rave reviews were: •The Real Deal, which featured more than 100 show-only deals on display in a room restricted to retailers, distributors and buyers. This was the second year for The Real Deal, and it was packed with “shoppers” each morning who were looking for deals to pursue on the show floor.

•The ATA Great Giveaway, which packed about 3,000 people into the convention center’s Sagamore Ballroom

Atmosphere and Perspectiv Jay McAninch, ATA president and CEO, said this year’s big numbers look even stronger when considering the overall atmosphere surrounding the nation as 2008 gets under way.

"When you think of those large crowds moving through the entrance and onto the show floor, it’s easy to forget that the nation's economy has been weak and consumer confidence low the past few months,” he said. “Not only that, but the weather was spotty going into the show, northern Indiana was under a flood watch, and most of our attendees were paying more than S3 a gallon for gasoline to drive here. The positive atmosphere at the show reminds everyone that even during tough times, archers and bowhunters still enjoy shooting their bows and arrows, and industry retailers still look for the greatest deals on the best archery and bowhunting equipment."

Fred Bear’s commitment to promoting archery and bowhunting, was won by bowhunting pioneer Jim Dougherty, 69, of Tulsa, Okla. Dougherty’s work has appeared for decades in books and magazines, and he also served as an officer and on several boards for various archery and bowhunting organizations. The award is a joint effort of the ATA, the Professional Outdoor Media Association, and the Archery Hall of Fame where the award will be housed.

Back to Indy in 2009 The 2009 ATA Trade Show will return to Indianapolis on Jan. 8-10 before moving to Columbus, Ohio, in 2010. The show returns to Indy in 2011 and goes back to Columbus in 2012.

As promised, here is the next edition of the most common form flaws.

In the last issue, we covered 14 form flaws under the headings of Stance, Alignment, and The Bow Hand Grip. In this issue we will cover Anchor and the Bow Arm. In the next issue we will cover both the Finger Release and the flaws associated with the Mechanical Release.

The assumption will be made that this is a right-handed archer. The opposite will be true for a left-hander.

ANCHOR 15. Thumb Behind Neck This causes

the wrist of the draw arm to kink or bend.

Upon release, the wrist recoils and returns to its original straight position, which in turn creates sideways, pre-loaded torque in the wrist and hand and is, therefore, transferred to the bowstring. Putting the thumb behind the neck also allows the archer to collapse into the back of the neck, thereby negating any back tension the archer may have had. A straight, relaxed and expanded wrist/forearm/ elbow unit (in line with the arrow) is the most forgiving, “Idiot Proof’ method in archery.

16. Head and Neck Too Far Forward As in the “Z formation” mentioned in #4, when the head and neck are pushed forward into the bow string for peep alignment, it creates tension in the neck.

This is not conducive to consistent shot execution. The head should be upright and relaxed, and only slightly tilted to the side to accommodate peep alignment.

The string should just touch the tip of the nose. (Archers that wear glasses may have to touch the side of their nose in order to see past the frames.) If you can’t reach the string with your nose without tipping your head forward, either your draw length is too short or, more likely, your anchor is too low.

17. String Too Tight Into Face at Anchor Pulling the string into the skin

of the face or side of the cheek causes left and right string oscillation (resulting in left and right misses) and inconsistent anchor. Adjust your draw length, release rope, string loop, and/or anchor up or down until the string just touches your nose.

18. String Doesn’t Touch Nose at Anchor A solid and consistent anchor

is imperative for good shooting, and is especially true when shooting up and down hills. The more points of reference you have, the more consistent your shots will be. (I recommend at least four.) Your scope or pin on target is one anchor . . . your eye looking through the peep is a second anchor ... the tip of your nose on the string is a third . . . and the knuckles of your draw hand solidly touching and/ or locked into your jawbone is a fourth.

A kisser button is an optional anchor, but it’s not necessary if you use a peep sight.

Note: If you have trouble touching the tip of your nose with the string without bending your head forward, try raising your anchor farther up the side of your face until the string naturally comes up under your nose.

You may find it easiest to pull the bow with the elbow locked, but once you get to full draw, “unlock” it but don’t bend it! All bones from the lower part of the hand all the way up to the shoulder socket should be aligned as much as possible, to support both the mass and draw weight of the bow.

25. Bow Wrist Bent This is when the archer bends the wrist out away from the midline of the bow, sometimes in an attempt to keep the string from hitting his bow arm. As in #12, the handle of the bow is too far out on to the thumb where only soft tissue, not bone, is holding the bow, plus there is excess tension in the bent wrist. This shooting position will almost always give the right-handed archer pre-loaded right bow torque (resulting in right arrows). Again, the bow wrist should be straight and relaxed and the bow handle should contact your hand at the base elbow causes a slightly different draw length and the archer can’t of the thumb.

Seven Ways to Stay Calm

One of the big keys to being successful in any athletic competition is to stay calm and relaxed. This allows your muscles to perform at an optimum level. When an athlete gets caught up in the hype of the competition, anxiety and tension will mount and the point of focus will shift away from the performance. There are numerous ways an archer can minimize the excitement and maximize the performance.

Repulate Your Breathing. Take slow deep breaths and slowly release the air. Constantly remind yourself to relax the muscles in your shoulders and neck. When these muscles are tight, it is very difficult to get the release to go off and it will also produce excess pin movement. The slower, deep breathing lowers the pulse rate and helps calm the tension in the muscles.

Practice Positive Affirmation. Use index cards and write one positive statement about you and your ability to perform on each card. The statement should be something like the following: “I always shoot a strong shot.” “I have perfect form.” “I always stay calm and focused.” “I love the competition.” When you have extra time between targets, take the cards out of your quiver and read them.

Fill your mind with positive thoughts about your ability to compete.

Stay Focused. Keep your mind focused on making a perfect shot execution. I always told myself at each target to “shoot a strong shot.” Find some key words to say to yourself before shooting each target. This will direct your March-April 2008

thinking and reinforce your thought process in a positive direction.

Choose a Focal Point. Before you shoot, it is important to focus your eyes on a particular spot to calm yourself.

The eyes could rest on your bow, the target, the ground in front of you, or any place that feels comfortable. When my daughter Sally was younger, she had a “checklist’ taped to the limb of her bow. By reading this before each shot, she would get focused on the task of shooting a good shot.

When the eyes rest on a specific location before you shoot, they will not be distracted by what is going on around you.

This technique prevents you from becoming caught up in the excitement of the situation.

Get a Realistic Picture. Every tournament is the same. Though the prizes, rewards, or honor of winning may differ, don’t let them increase the difficulty of the performance. What is the same at each tournament? The targets, your bow and arrows, the maximum distance to the target, and the scoring are the same at a local tournament and at a world championship. Treat them that way. In the film Hoosiers, the coach took his team to the arena where they were going to play for the NCAA Basketball Championship. He had the players measure the height of the rim and the size of the floor to show them that it was the same as at home. This is the same perspective that archers need when shooting the “big tournament.”

Have Fun. View a tournament for what it is. Archery is the sport and recreation that you have chosen to do for pleasure. Do not take yourself or the situation so seriously that you overlook the main reason that you shoot arrows.

Enjoy the competition!

Run a Mental Program. The question I nearly always ask each of my shooters at a big tournament is, “Are you running your mental program?” The mental program is the process of seeing and feeling yourself shoot a perfect shot even before you actually pull back your bow. Developing a strong mental program takes lots of practice, but it will be one of your strongest tools to help you remain calm and focused.

Staying calm and relaxed is a must if an archer is going to maximize his or her performance. By taking a realistic view of the situation and your ability to perform, you are putting the tournament into the perspective needed to feel at ease and do your best.

Welcome to the first 2008 edition of the Senior Corner. As it always does, the ASA kicked off the new outdoor archery season with it’s opening Pro/Am event in Gainesville. FL. on February 1st. This is one of those hard to plan for events, since it is still February and even in Florida the weather can be cold or worse yet cold, windy and rainy. Three years ago the shoot tested the limits of even the hardiest shooters with conditions close to limit of survival. Even under the vendor's tent, there was no relief from the wind and 45 degree temperatures and the archers had to contend with the rain and mud on top of that. Trying to sit and manipulate release parts in that kind of condition, while your hands are numb and your body's shivering makes for a long day. After a full day of it I was making the rounds of all of the local stores trying to buy myself some warmth for the next day. Have you ever tried to

buy long johns in Florida? The same adage that you hear about shooting an archery tournament. “If you didn’t bring it with you, you won’t find it here” applies to shopping for warm underwear in The Sunshine State. This year the Lord blessed the weekend with really nice shooting weather, even though the mornings were frigid, especially Saturday. By afternoon the temps were up into the mid seventies and the warm sun made us northerners forget about the weather awaiting us after the weekend is over and we return to the frozen tundra above the Mason-Dixon line.

A record crowd was on hand to test their skills, which bodes well for the ASA’s season. Last year brought a multitude of changes made to the 3D game shot by this organization.

After a couple of years of declining attendance, due in a large part to the increased cost of travel, the ASA boldly changed their format to include marked ranges and the challenge of the 14 ring. The marked yardage round is used both days for the entry level shooters, which gives them a chance to learn yardage judging without a lot of arrow breaking misses. It was hoped

that this would also increase the number of new shooters attending these major tour events, since one of our biggest fears as archers is looking foolish in the eyes of our competitors. The intermediate level shooters do one day of marked and one day of unmarked targets and the advanced shooters shoot the unmarked ranges only.

There was a lot of resistance to the marked yardage format from the established 3D guys but 1 think the way the format was applied from beginner to expert, makes room for everyone to enjoy both types of 3D. Based on the turnout at the first shoot of the year, the changes are taking hold in a positive way.

The fourteen ring had been used for several years in the Pro shoot-down round to generate a way to catch up from behind and to build crowd excitement and it did just that. The same chance to catch up by daring to shoot for the small fourteen ring, stuck out at the edge of the eight ring, has made for some interesting results, especially at the Pro level. the Gainesville shoot last year, with the standard ASA yardage setup, the Pros shot the heck out of the little guy and the number of points the top shooters were up over a par round was getting out of hand.

This brought about a change to the way the ASA sets their ranges, longer than before the fourteen and also the way the ring is scored. A fourteen now has to break the inside of the scoring ring, which on a 3D target is about %” wide, making the shot that much harder. These changes seem to have brought the scores back into line or maybe even lower than the pre fourteen levels.

The second target change made was the addition of another twelve ring on the upper edge of the ten. This was done to try to eliminate the excess wear on a single twelve ring brought about by the marked yardage format. One day the lower twelve would be in play and the next day the upper one. I’m a non 3d’r myself, so 1 thought that it would be no big deal to try for the twelve ring, whether lower or

upper, Same size ring, so what’s the big whoops. Well it turns out that it is a big deal and probably the most disliked of all of last year's changes. This year the changes were not as many, to give things a chance to settle in. The max distances were adjusted in some classes and some other small changes were made, based on last year’s experiences. The Pro/Am has been reduced to ten targets this year in order to accommodate more shooters. This event at the Paris, TX. shoot last year was so popular that archers had to be turned away and the shooting time was very long due to the number of people entered. This year things should run smoother which is one of the hallmarks of the ASA shoots. If something needs changing, they change it until it works. Once again I have to pick the ASA as the most organized group in archery.

Continued from page 107 due” word from the boss before 1 finish it. This time she let me down and Vegas has rolled around so I'll include that shoot in this column as well. Arlyne was at the Vegas shoot, as usual, so I got the go ahead to be a little late. She’s a busy lady and gets behind in her work, like we all do. but it works for a procrastinator like me. She’s getting a bow ready to shoot the qualifier for the National Senior Games in San Francisco next summer and 1 got the impression she’s excited about get back into shooting a bow again in competition, something she hasn’t done for quite a few years. The Senior Olympics is something every senior archer should try at least once in their over 50 lifetime and I’m sure she'll love it. For those of you who have never entered, now’s your chance. Google NSGA on your computer and click on the link that takes you to their web page, where you’ll find the list of state games and their dates, for qualifying for next year’s games.

You must qualify in the NSGA organized state games for your state in order to compete in the nationals. You can also go to another state that allows out of state qualifiers , if you can’t make the games in your own state. Since the total number of archers is relatively small, it is not necessary to win a medal to qualify but only to shoot a minimum score, which is very easily done. Don’t delay, get busy today.

Now for Vegas. Once again a record number of archers, from all over the world, were in attendance and as usual things ran smoothly thanks to the efforts of Bruce Cull and all of the NFAA officers who give up their time to handle all of the many jobs

which need to be done to insure that the archers can concentrate on their game. As a vendor at the trade show, 1 get very little time to get involved in who’s doing what on the shooting line but I get to meet lots of really nice folks at the booth which has to be my main focus. Things never stop at the show, even long enough to take a lunch or bathroom break, especially on Friday, when everyone is all revved up and ready to buy. This brings up a point which 1 hate to deal with but which I feel 1 need to bring up. the theft of merchandise from the vendor tables. On Saturday, I went for a bathroom break and when I got back, a $160 Backfire release had been stolen from my table. It’s a release which everyone loves to play with, so it moves around a lot and is hard to keep track of. It’s also only on consignment to me, so if one gets stolen, 1 still have to pay for it out of my own pocket. It’s just beyond my imagination how someone could enjoy shooting that stolen release or showing it proudly to their friends. Please, if you can’t afford to pay for what you want, don’t make me or the other vendors support your expensive tastes. Do without it until you've saved up the money and you’ll feel a lot better using it in the long run. If anyone who reads this has a friend showing his new Backfire release around, let me know. I’m the only source and I know who buys each of them.

Another occurrence of theft also bit me on this trip. We stay over an extra day to sightsee and this year we drove down to Laughlin, NV, to check it out. Not worth the two hour ride.

Basically Laughlin is a smaller, older version of Vegas with the majority of the people being retirees, sitting at slot machines, smoking. The theft occurred on the way back and the perpetrator turned out to be the police department of Clark County

I was on highway 93 cruising at 65-70 mph, when a LVPD car going the other way flipped on the lights and sirens. 1 caught him in the rear view turning around in the middle of the highway and I thought he must have gotten an emergency call to head back north. When he got close, I pulled over to let him by but he came up behind me instead. He asked me if I knew how fast was going and I said I did and he said he clocked me at 87 MPH approaching him. WHAT!!! I wanted to know how far away his radar worked and he said he was watching me for about a mile but because 1 was dodging in and out of traffic, he couldn’t lock me in until 1 was about a quarter of a mile away, passing a red truck. I tried to explain to him that I passed no red truck and also that 1 hadn’t even changed lanes since I got on 93 from route 163. He said maybe my speedometer on the rental car was wrong. Oh yeah, a 20 mph error on a brand new car happens all the time, or maybe I wasn’t paying attention. I told him I was 70 years old and had been driving for 55 years and that I don’t go 87 mph, EVER. “Nope, you did it. I’ve been doing this for twenty years and 1 don’t make mistakes.” “Well you sure as hell made one today”, 1 said but he didn’t want to hear it. He said he’d do me a big favor and give me a lower level offense ticket that would only cost me $67 and wouldn’t be reported to New York if I paid it. There just happened to be a small town called Searchlight about 5 miles up the road where I could take care of it. Gee what a coincidence. When I asked him if that was the only way they could support their town, he told me it was an upscale community, who got all of their money from gaming. When we got to “upscale” Searchlight, we made a right at the combination casino and McDonalds and drove though a broken down village

of trailers to get to the Hall of Justice. I will say though that it was the only thing in that town that was upscale. Very modern, well landscaped and lots of paved parking but only a lone car in the parking lot, belonging to the lady who takes the money. It kind of reminded me of a Coen Brothers movie, very strange, kind of nightmarish.

So what it boils down to in my mind is free money for the town with no risk. You’re accused by the cop’s story and his radar and if you don’t plead guilty and pay, they’ll offer you a chance to come back, plead not guilty, come back again for your trial and then be convicted anyway because it’s your word against his and you have no way of refuting it with any proof. It’s even better for them than waiting for you to lose it gambling. No middle man and lump sum payouts. I got caught in a similar trap last year in Texas. All 65 mph limit signs, then a 55 mph limit sign, for no apparent reason and a cop car hiding to nail you if you don’t slow down. They had a different twist to the “we won’t report it to New York” routine though, which required you to call the court but when call, you find out that they want to bleed you for an extra S50 for the service of NOT reporting it. Thank you very much. The final straw is when you’re hanging up they wish you a “blessed day”. I just found that to be a little hypocritical and told her so in words I won’t repeat here.

Now that I’ve vented and calmed down, I wish good luck to those of you who are going to Louisville and Hartford and I hope you’ll stop by the booth and share your speed trap stories with me. See you soon.

I mentioned in my last article that shot execution, form, and stability are correlated and a problem in one area can cause a ripple affect into the other areas.

For example, if you have bad alignment, it causes you to use more muscle to hold the bow up. That muscle involvement causes instability. That instability stalls your shot execution. Reaching for stability is a great way to calm your mind and keep everything working together as one unit.

The basic fundamentals of bow tuning, setup, and form are the best place to concentrate on when building stability. In this article I will cover equipment settings, tuning ideas, and a few' sneaky tricks to get the most stability you can through tuning.

Draw length The right draw length has a huge affect on stability. It affects the amount of tension in your body at full draw and it governs the quality of your alignment with the target. To get started, you have to take a base line measurement of draw. Now there arc several methods out there for finding your draw such as the Wingspan method. It takes the measurement of your outstretched arms and with a quick calculation, you arrive at what is supposed to be your draw length.

Though it is popular, I don’t recommend it. It assumes that everyone’s body is perfectly symmetrical. Mine isn’t. Due to a collar bone break as a kid, my left half is more compact than my right half by nearly an inch an a half. I recommend the old fashioned way. Stand close to the wall with your fist extended as you are shooting a bow. You will want someone to be sure that your form looks good before measurement. Look for relaxed and low shoulders, unlocked but not bent elbow, straight head and neck, and relaxed stance.

Make sure your form is straight and hold your fist up to the wall as ifyou are shooting a bow.

Measure from the wall to the corner of your mouth. If you take a close look at the face, the corner of the mouth is on a direct 90 degree line straight down from your line of sight.

Some shooters will have to make some allowances for face shape and shooting style, but the corner of the mouth measurement has proven itself to me over years and years of measuring and recommending draw lengths to all types of people.

Now that you have your baseline measurement you may need to make some more slight adjustments to reach the total optimum draw length. Before proceeding to the next step, make sure you shoot your bow quite a bit to get used to the feel. Small changes in draw length will take some time to get used to. Your sight motion pattern or “range of motion”, as I like to call it, will continually give

you clues as to which changes you should make with your draw length. Because the draw length directly affects the alignment of your form, you can use it to your advantage. A longer draw tends to over extend the frame and make the bow hold loosen on the target. It will create broad sweeping motions that are slow but never stop. The size of your range of motion depends on how strong you are and how much experience you have. However if it seems really broad, loose, and slow moving, most likely your draw is long. If your draw is too short your hold will be tight and jerky. You will see a fluttering tight hold on the center with quick blips out into wide scoring areas. Typically this condition also makes your release seem hard to control as well. The extra tension created at full draw is just enough to allow those “blips” to activate your release. You will know it is happening if it seems like your dot is jumping off the center just in time for the release to shoot. As you begin to experiment with draw changes make slight !4” adjustments either way until it seems you are getting an optimal blend between a tight hold but smooth predictable movement. Once you have it, mark an arrow, so you can use it as a guide if your draw changes over time.

It makes it easy to rule out draw length issues right away when you are hunting down problems.

Short Draw

Long Draw

Ifyour draw length is on the short side, your hold is sharp and choppy. It holds closer to the inner X but you take dangerous trips out into the nine ring.

The long draw hold is more predictable but looser.

Another sneaky advantage to what you have just learned is, you can tailor your hold to the game you are playing.

For instance, you arc going to a F1TA shoot and they count the inner X-ring as ten. The big nine means nothing. By shortening your draw slightly, you can tighten your hold a tad and maximize you time over the inner X. However you run the risk of shooting a “big nine", which March-April 2008

really means nothing but it still may hurt your pride a little until you see how well your “inner ten” score is. Now let’s think about Vegas. If you shoot a big nine, you are dead donkey and done for the weekend, so you don’t want to have a tight jittery hold. You can let your draw out slightly and slow the float down a bit. It ranges over the whole ten and you may not get as many X-rings, but you have a little insurance against killing your game by duffing one in the big nine. Don't get too crazy with the loose hold though. Because these days a 900 is just the qualification

draw length, yon can make adjustments based on the game you are playing. The target on the left scores the big ten and in Vegas X-rings are not as important. You may want your draw a tad on the long side ofperfect. However, in FITA (target on the right) only the inner X scores as ten, so a draw on tad on the short side of perfect may get you more tens and ultimately a slightly higher average.

Bow Mass and Holding Weight Another contributing factor to overall stability is your bow’s mass weight and its relationship to holding weight at full draw.

There needs to be a harmony between the two. When this is in balance, your bow just wants to be still and you have to use very little muscle energy to hold it still.

A bow that is too heavy in relation to its holding weight at full draw will hold very loose and it will be very hard to control.If, when aiming, your bow makes large sweeping motions out of the center and it tends to “over travel” the center as you bring it back on target, you should cither raise your holding weight or lower your mass weight. The movement will tend to be slow and broad. On the other hand, if your mass weight is too light in relation to your holding weight, the sight movement will be unpredictable and choppy. It will not be too broad, but it will be unpredictable enough to cause misses that you normally wouldn’t make.

To change mass weight without really affecting your bows overall balance, remove or add weight that is close to your to your riser. Changes to the weight out on the ends of your stabilizer can adversely affect balance unless you take equally from each rod or change the length of the rods to maintain balance.

Balance and stabilizers Overall balance of your system can have an effect on how well you hold on target. Too much forward balance or too much side weight can cause more muscle involvement in the shot. Any extra muscle involvement in the shot can cause instability that can hold your shot execution hostage, cause undue tension, and totally derail your confidence in your game. When you are arranging your stabilizers, try to keep the overall balance neutral. You don't have to dangle it from a string or get too hyper technical, just lightly hold the bow in your hand and extend it like you arc shooting.

be for overall stability, but you will want to be sure that the bow is working for you rather than you having to constantly control the bow. Depending on what you need as far as overall weight, you can change your stabilizers length to achieve better balance without adding a lot of weight. For example, you have a 24” stabilizer with two stack weights on the end. You feel like you need more tip down influence so the bow stays upright, but you don’t want to make the bow heavier by adding a couple more ounces of weight. All you would have to do is go to a 30" or a 36” rod. The extra rod length adds a negligible amount of weight.

but you can get the extra tip influence you need by moving the same amount of weight farther from the bow. This will make the bow rock more forward.

Keeping a well tuned bow and being sure it is timed, tuned, and balanced will help you be more stable. This stability will allow you to shoot more tension free and with better more timely shot execution. In the next issue I will form, and relaxation techniques that you can employ as part of your routine to increase stability and consistency shot to shot.

precise the Youth Olympics. In 2010 the Youth Olympics will be a reality with either Moscow or Singapore being the host city. The entire Island of Singapore is abuzz with talk about the upcoming announcement of the host city, for their part Singapore has poured a massive amount of money into just arousing the interest of its people. Private businesses are running advertisements on billboards and through the electronic media, people in the street are dressed in promotional clothing.

At this time of year, I had expected to write this article around the Chinese New Year celebrations and my archery students progress but it has been impossible to ignore the feeling of expectation that holds this country in its grip as we approach the announcement date of the 21st of February.

For such a small country Singapore has some very impressive facilities from venues the size of three football fields floating on pontoons with grand stands that would hold over 30,000 spectators to

the more conventional sporting venues.

If their bid is the winning one, the games village will be the new university facility that is currently under construction at over USS300 Million this is a city within a city, Singapore has most of what it needs to host the games already in place. For the remaining required facilities, funds have been earmarked for the job and with my knowledge of Singapore, I can assure you they will run the games to perfection.

On the archery side of things, my students and those working with other coaches are training towards these games no matter where they are to be held they intend making it to the games. Some of the archers I am working with arc just starting out and have set their goal as being the Youth Olympics and in some cases they may just make it when you see the determination they exhibit.

One of my main reasons for this trip to Singapore has been to inspect locations for field archery ranges as the Singapore Field archery Association is very close to gaining government approval and with this will come funding. The first range we have inspected is for a proposed Pro shoot range on Pulau Ubin Island. The jungle range would be a reasonably difficult range to shoot with many of the shots being from the light into dark medium to heavy tropical jungle with inclines and drop-offs up to 25 degrees. Stage two on Ubin is the Casuarina forest over looking the lake with semi open lightly wooded ranges giving a motley-lighted effect with gentle slopes. Stage three Ubin is where the evil nature of the course designer can shine through, the lake is a sheer sided granite quarry filled with crystal

One of my recurve workshops (the two young ladies in the center are both aiming for the Youth Olympics Vanessa Loh (left) for Singapore and Log Hue (right) for China) clear water. This will lend itself to some extremely difficult shots like an uphill 45 yard at 30 degrees off the vertical and a spectacular 60 yard downhill shooting from the edge of a 90 foot high cliff top to the target on a pontoon anchored in the lake.

The island itself is like stepping back in time by 50 years as it has the last of the Kampong style villages remaining in Singapore. There is an old resort on the Island with air-conditioned unit style accommodation and a large conference room suitable for an indoor tuning range and relay centre for the streaming video broadcast centre. Ubin also has a new resort being built that may be more suitable, for those who wish to be closer to the attractions that Singapore has to

offer there are 4 star hotels within walking distance of the Island ferries.

So far, we have had nothing but positive feedback from government officials regarding setting up field archery in Singapore and developing ranges suitable for a broadcasted professional archery tournament. Robert Teo Chee Hin (Assistant Director National Parks Board Pulau Ubin) and his assistant Choi Yook Sau (Senior Conservation Officer) conducted our tour of Ubin. With the entire Island being a Nature reserve we will have to work very closely with the National Parks people so as not to interfere with the ecology of the Island.

As the world will see in the near future Singapore is very proactive when it comes to promotions using sport as a catalyst.

The Della Iowa ProAm Tournament set a new record attendance again this year. There were 547 shooters from 32 states and Canada. There was a practice range next the tournament building that was a real hit with the shooters.

Next years tournament date is January 16th, 17th and 18th 2009.

The success of this tournament is dependant on the participation from the important industry sponsors. Delta Sports is title sponsor, Mathews Inc. is Emerald level sponsor. The Silver sponsors are Hoyt. Gold Tip, Specialty Archery L.L.C., Archery Shooter Systems, Alpen Optics and BCY Fibers. These companies obviously are trying to promote the sport of target archery. Finally, Sunny Gainesville, Florida

Every February archers from all over the country and a few from foreign countries load up planes, trains and automobiles and head to Gainesville, Florida in hopes of starting the competitive season off with nice, sunny weather. Every year they are treated rudely to high winds, cold temperatures or rain and sometimes they get all three.

But on February 1-3, 2008 at the Delta Targets Florida Pro/Am Championship all of those good weather wishes came true. At the first event of the 2008 McKenzie ASA Pro/Am Tour the wind was light, the weather was warm and the skies never emptied a drop of water all weekend. In short it was a beautiful weekend to shoot a bow and arrow.

Friday after noon’s Zebra Twist Team shoot was the first featuring the new ten target format rather than the old twenty target ranges. The shortened event allowed archers more time to practice judging yardage, shoot the Limbsaver Known Distance shoot and Long Shot or to simply catch up on the latest archery goods and gossip in the tournament village.

Sunday’s Pro Pressure Point Shootdown was held in an open field, but this year instead of looking for some form of a wind brake shooters and spectators were seeking shade from the hot sun.

The ASA has a strict “Move Up” policy where shooters are moved up the competition ladder based on money won and top ten finishes at national events. For example, if a SemiPro shooter wins 52,000.00 and has two top ten finishes, the following year he is required to shoot Open Pro. By the way, Jeff Doss of Hokes Bluff, Alabama is well on his way to reaching those two milestones with his first place finish in Semi-Pro and the subsequent $1,200.00 in prize money.

But for top Women’s Open amateur shooters there is no hard and fast move up rule. So what does it take for a lady to make the move from the amateur ranks up to shoot with the Women’s Pro shooters?

Well for Margie Carter of Folkston, GA she knew she was ready when she won the Women’s Open at the 2007 Florida Pro/ Am Championship. She then went on to win four of the seven Pro/Am Tour events including the Realtree ASA Classic and the Shooter of the Year.

“Once I won Gainesville last year I was ready to move up,” Margie said. “1 finished the season out and up I went.”

She proved that she was ready for the pro ranks when she shot a 402 on the forty target course (196 on Saturday and

206 on Sunday) and led all ladies heading into the shootdown.

Connie Calloway of Knoxville, Tennessee shot a 400 followed by Connie Griffin of Atkins, Arkansas with a 395, Susan Davis of Hopewell, Virginia with a 394 and Samantha Kline of Rossman, North Carolina at 391.

Margie never lost her lead throughout the shootdown and when it was time for the sixth shot only one other archer was still within 10 points of her lead, Connie Calloway. Samantha climbed from fifth to finish in third. Connie Griffin finished in fourth and Susan in fifth.

On the sixth shot Connie attempted to hit a 14 to put some added pressure on Margie. When Connie’s shot just missed the 14 for an 8 all Margie had to do was hit the animal for the win.

She shot a pin wheel 10 to secure her first victory in her first ever pro event.

“I didn’t let myself get nervous until after it was over,” Margie said of only needing a 5 on the last shot. “I just wanted to hit center 10. 1 wasn’t even listening to what they said. That’s terrible.”

The Goza name has now come full circle. When archers hear the name Goza they automatically think of the Limited Pro division where chances are from one to three Goza’s will be in the shootdown. Well, Brian Goza of Bryant, Alabama has added his name to the list of ASA Limited Pro winners in the Goza family by picking up his first Pro/Am win.

Brian entered the shootdown with a one point lead over Chris Stachler of Celina, Ohio who shot a 390. Next was Brian’s brother Larry Goza of Crossville, Alabama with a 389, Tom Blanton of Ashland, Ohio with a 386 and Gene Curry of Brownwood. Texas with a 384. After watching two archers pick up their first professional wins, Tom Crowe of Umpqua, Oregon could not have liked his chances. He entered the shootdown in fifth place with a score of 410 and 10 bonus rings trailing leader and veteran shooter Derry Null of Zanesville, Ohio at 416. Behind Derry were three guys who were hoping to join Margie and Brian as first time Pro/ Am winners, Bobby Cothran of Fairview, Tennessee with a 412, Jerry Hubbard of London, Kentucky with a 411 and Joel Lccker ofTroy, Virginia with a 410 and 12 bonus rings.

The field flip-flopped when Derry missed the second target. Tom climbed from fifth to a tie for first after five arrows by averaging ten points per shot, he had two 8s and two 12s. On the sixth arrow only Tom, Bobby and Jerry were left standing.

Bobby and Tom both scored 10s to move on to a seventh shot.

Tom shot another 10 and when Bobby’s shot fell just low of the 10 for an 8 Tom had picked up his first victory of the year.

“I have been doing a lot of judging but 1 have not been doing a lot of shooting outdoors because of the weather, it has been snowing and cold and rainy,” Crowe the Oregon native said.

“I have been doing a lot of indoor shooting. I had one bad shot the whole weekend. It was so bad it went right in the middle of the 12.”

When asked about the pressure of younger guys entering Senior Pro every year Tom says he may not be the youngest but

“1 probably practice more than anybody,” Tom said. “I do this for a living. I don’t go to a job or anything. I go out and shoot everyday. If] can’t shoot outside I put my raincoat on and umbrella and go out and judge. I think I've got a little bit of an advantage being able to shoot all the time.”

As always in Men’$ Open Pro class there was a logjam at the top. Brian Jones of Clay City, Kentucky came into the shootdown in the lead, but only by virtue of bonus rings. Three shooters shot scores of 424. Brian led with 18 bonus rings followed by Jeff Hopkins of Clayton, Delaware with 15 bonus rings and Levis Morgan of Rossman, North Carolina with 14 bonus rings. The final two shooters were Evan Baize of Ashland, Kentucky 422

and Bobby Kctcher of Wilburton, Oklahoma 421.

After struggling a little on Saturday with a 204, Levi came back strong and shot a 220 to make the shootdown. ”1 had my bow shooting real good at the house but I had a buss cable break,” Levi said. “I had to put a new bow together right before I came down here. I struggled a little bit (Saturday) with yardage and shooting and everything. I was still in the hunt which is where you always want to be after the first day. Today 1 knew I had to come in here and shoot a big score.”

After five targets in the Pro Pressure Point Shootdown nothing had changed, Brian, Jeff and Levi were still tied for first.

Evan was two points behind. Bobby finished in fifth and since he was not within ten points of the leader did not make the sixth shot. After the sixth shot there was still a three way tie so Brian, Jeff and Levi moved on while Evan finished fourth.

The ASA crew set the stake on the seventh shot, a McKenzie Wild Boar relatively short to increase the drama. Levi led off and nailed a 14. Jeff stepped up next knowing he needed a 14 to stay alive. His shot was close but after a long hard look official scorer Don Bailey called the arrow an 8. Next up was Brian. He too shot for the 14. Brian hit just barely above the 14 for an 8.

After a hugely successful 2007 which included winning the Shooter of the Year, Levi has started 2008 with a flourish as well.
