“Say, what’s a tin-can round?"

I turned to see who had asked the question. A young fellow, just outside a group of archers on the Pasadena range, had been listening to our com­ ments on the Barstow Shoot. Appar­ ently a new-comer to archery, the idea of introducing tin-cans as targets in­ trigued him to break into our conver­ sation. Before anyone could answer, our curious member wanted to know what the “Barstow Shoot” was; said he had heard bits of conversation about tin-cans, pool-table, ball shot, frou-frou flight, etc., and would we “please tell me what it’s all about.”

“Sure." I said. “Let’s sit down under a tree and I’ll tell you what I know about the most unusual Field Archery shoot ever conceived."

We sat in the shade of a huge syca­ more tree. By way of opening the con­ versation, I introduced myself. “My name is Len Edney." Ws shook hands,

but he did not offer to identify him­ self. “What’s your name, and what club do you represent?” I asked. He hesitated a moment, then said, “I have a thousand names, but you can call me ’Walk-up.’ You see, I’m a myth. I rep­ resent all archers everywhere."

"O.K., Walk-up, I get it. I’m to tell all archers everywhere about the Bar­ stow’ shoot, right?”

"Yes, that’s it.”

“Well. Walk-up ■up, I’ll give you a little background first."

After awhile the people of Barstow became Field Archery conscious. Nubbie took advantage of their interest by way of sponsoring all the youngsters and encouraged anyone else who showed an inclination toward the sport. Three years ago, Nubbie announced that Bar­ stow was ready to invite all archers for a Novelty Shoot. That was the first Barstow Shoot.

“I hadn’t been around Field Archery much at that time, so I passed it up.

Just plain ignorance on my part. 1 guess. When the gang got back, I be­ gan to hear about tin-can rounds, owl-in-the-tree, ball shots, etc., and like you, I began to ask questions.

"So I’m glad to meet you. Walk-up. and pleased with this opportunity to sit down and give you the story of the recent shoot. And brother, regardless of how poorly’ I may tell it. if you don’t agree that archers can have more fun than people, I’ll put in with you.

“The shoots are staged and managed by’ the “Desert Bow Hunters." Nubbie is president, general manager, and spark plug of the outfit. Included in the membership is Don Theye, who distinguishes himself as Nubbie’s ’chief assistant.’

“The shoot was scheduled for May 14 and 15, 1949. I guess just about every merchant in Barstow kicked in with something for a prize. The Cham­ ber of Commerce donated $125 which bought five radios. There were about 85 donors of prizes valued at over 5800.

That kind of support spells civic pride, cooperation, enterprise and top-grade sportsmanship all rolled into one. On top of that we were greeted with a smile and genuine friendliness wherever we went. I think the people of Barstow are swell, especially the merchants who helped put the shoot over in such a big way.

“We arrived Friday, May 13th, pre­ cisely at 9:00 p.m. By ‘we’ I mean Bunny and me—Bunny’s my wife, not a cotton-tail.

"The Desert Bow Hunters' headquar­ ters is located just behind the Oasis Cafe on the highway about one mile west of the Barstow business district.

We pulled up to a roped-off area in which were dozens of straw bales set .up for practice shooting and novelty events. The clubhouse was as full of archers as a bee hive. Nubbie came busting through the gang to greet us and to give directions to our quarters.

He had reserved a bungalow for us at the Plaza Motel, about half a mile west. Just as we started to the motel we were greeted by' Margaret Foster and Viola Maull. We loaded the girls into our car and took them along to get the low-down on what was hap­ pening at the moment.

during oft shooting hours. After check­ ing in, the procedure seems to be routine, that is, back to the practice butts and start shooting. The area is well illuminated, with plenty of room for 25 to 30 archers to shoot at a time, and equipped with a public ad­ dress system.

"Archers were arriving continuously.

Everyone was in a ‘holiday’ mood.

Stew Foster was there in a bright red shirt and long peaked cap. Laurie Maull was ‘layin’ 'em in’ on the practice targets. He, too, wore a peaked cap, but on him the peak hangs down his neck. Delmer and Erwin Pletcher also were getting in some practice. Lots of archers were just standing around in groups talking. Others were registering for the shoot. Some were in the Oasis Cafe having a late supper.

"To the east and adjoining the area were the campers. If you wanted to camp you could do so, for free.

“Along about that time, archers be­ gan to blow in at frequent intervals, and I do mean ‘blow.' There was a stiff breeze at Barstow, but in the Cajon Pass on the main highway that breeze was squeezed into a funnel that increased its velocity to a wind storm that kicked up the sand, making visi­ bility difficult. One party coming through the Pass with the car windows closed said they thought they had run into fog. But these archers don’t stop at a little thing like a wind storm. They shoot in snow, rain and what have you.

“The night on the desert was beau­ tiful. The color and activity around our headquarters, the laughter and happy greetings, all added to the romance and excitement of the occasion. Nubbie took us into his cabin to see the prizes. I thought we had walked into Sears basement. There were radios, clocks, glassware, auto accessories, hams, and many other articles—all generous do­ nations by the merchants of Barstow.

After feasting our eyes on the prizes for awhile and secretly hoping to win a radio we decided to string up the old bows and get in some practice. It seemed that everyone else had the same idea, for the range was loaded. A string of archers, both men and women, with a sprinkling of juveniles, extended clear across the roped enclosure and arrows were flying thick and fast toward th" bales, the hits playing a tattoo as the arrows struck the targets in rapid suc­ cession.

"The first archer to arrive at head­ quarters the evening before the shoot begins is distinguished by a large, white lapel decoration inscribed ‘First Arch­ er' and is awarded ten gallons of gas and an oil change. This year, Shortie Clark broke the tape hours ahead of the pack.

“Milling around the shooting posi­ tions in the light of dozens of electric lights and a beautiful moon, I recog­ nized many archers whom you probably know by name or perhaps have met.

There was Hugh (Hug) and Hazel Rich, Del and Billie Westcott, Thelma and Harlan Northwood, Cap and Pearl Gregory, Merle and Ruth Hathaway, Roy and Frieda Hoff. Ed Dreis of SanAntonio, Texas, Chief Littlebird and his wife, Mary, from Oklahoma, Roy Dill, Henry and Babe Bitzenburger, Erwin Bingaman and many others.

“Beyond the practice bales lay the open desert. In the immediate area, on an abandoned mine site, the bales for a 14-target course loomed in the desert brush, the target faces gleaming a chal­ lenge in the moonlight. To the right and above the practice bales was the

“About eleven o'clock Bunny and I decided to hit the hay. The night had turned chilly, and believe it or not, we turned on the heat in our cottage and put an extra blanket on the bed.

“Saturday morning we were up bright and early. After a good break­ fast we arrived at headquarters. There was much activity. More archers had arrived during the night. Harvey Hicks was on the P.A. system announcing events and giving directions. the first first "If I remember correctly, the event Saturday morning was the Broad­ head Flight. I can’t recall the names of all the winners of all the events, but I’ll do my best. About a hundred archers lined up for the flight. There was no deviation from the usual flight shooting. Stew Foster won first place again. He has won so many flight events it should be getting monoton­ ous to him. Babe Bitzenburger took first place for the women and Evelyn Pletch­ er came second.

“The clout was next and the desti­ nation of an accurately aimed arrow was anybody’s guess with the strong opposition of a stiff cross wind.

“The Field Round was next in the order of events. All targets were deer head silhouettes. As I said before, the course is laid out on the site of an abandoned mine. The earth in that area is a fine copper colored dust. When the wind blows, you have a shooting handicap that’s a lou-lou. Everyone took the wind and dust in their stride —to say nothing of the amount taken in the hair, eyes, ears, nose and throat.

Any girl, brunette, blonde or otherwise who started out on the course without a head covering came back a red-head, regardless. Nevertheless, it was fun and no was in the same boat. waiting. We turned in our scores at the clubhouse and shot tlie ‘pool-table’, then the ‘rings shot’ and the ‘ball shot.’

“The ‘pool-table’ is an innovation to archery. An area about 20 by 30 feet is laid out on the ground. In the cen­ ter is a triangular target simulating racked-up pool balls, each ball with a number. There are similar targets in each of the four corners and one on either side midway between the ends.

Two archers shoot at a time, one arrow at each target. Starting with the center target, then across from the two lower f \ corners to the two upper corners. The two side targets are shot from the center, and finally across to the two end targets from the opposite targets at the top end. The corner targets have three balls, the center about fifteen and the sides two. The balls are numbered from one to fifteen. Milt Canfield won first in the men’s division, Beda Ma­ thews and Orlis Fisher came first and second respectively for the women.

“If you couldn’t get in on the ’pool­ table’ at the time, you could shoot the ‘ring shot.’ This event consisted of four rings made of rubber hose, wired to the bales in the arena. Each is a dif­ ferent side, shot from twenty-five to thirty yards. 1 didn’t measure them but they appeared to be about twelve, eight, six and three inches in diameter, re­ spectively. He has a fine start in the ‘Whiskerino’ -contest to be held at the National Tournament in July. His wife, Marge, was with him. We went out to welcome them and learned about the wind and dust in Cajon Pass. Bud Roeper was asleep in the truck. Bunny and I were ready to quit for the night. Stewart and Company wanted to ‘get started,’ so showing a grain of sense for once, we said ‘goodnight’ to the gang and left.

“Sunday was a much better day. The wind had died down considerably and the warmth of the sun was a welcome change from the day before.

“The ‘frou-frou’ flight, the ‘stump shot’ and the ‘house-cleaning shot’ were the only three novelty events not yet started. While the ‘frou-frou’ flight was in progress those who had not completed the other novelty events were being urged by Harvey Hicks over the P. A. system to do so. In the meantime ties in several events were being settled.

“Cap Gregory and Erwin Pletcher tied for first place in the ‘ball shot’ for the men. In the shoot-off Erwin came out on top. In this event the target is a four-in’Ch diameter indoor baseball, painted white and suspended in front of the bales. Shooting distance is about twenty yards. There are four balls and one arrow is shot at each ball.

“The shoot-off for settling second place among the girls on the ‘ball shot’ was between Babe Bitzenburger. Billie Westcott, Eva Bedwell and Bunny Ed-

ney. Viola Maull had shot three out of four balls in the morning to win first place. The four good looking gals step­ ped into the empty arena to settle the second place honors. On their first try the girls all tied again with one hit each. On the second try Billie shot :z a. and Babe and three balls, Bunny two Eva one each, giving Billie the second place.

“The women’s ‘house-cleaning shot’ was a riot. Merle Hathaway gave the girls a demonstration. Now, any demon­ stration presented by Merle is always worth the price of admission. He made his appearance armed with a broom, bow and arrows and decked out in a sunbonnet and apron,. His normally rugged features were transformed. He reminded me of a coy little house frau with cupid bow lips of carmen and cheeks of baby pink, At first glance 1 ... bit o_ of fluff had taken thought .. a new bit up archery and pricked up my ears.

Martha Arnold proved she could undress and shoot a bow faster than the rest of ’em.

“The ‘stump shot’ has always pro­ vided a lot of fun. To do this stunt requires the grace of a gazelle, the poise of a strip-tease artist and the equi­ librium of a tight-rope walker. On a signal by the keeper of the stop-watch,

you mount a stump on one foot. The stump is about twenty-six inches high and six inches in diameter, slanting slightly. While remaining on one foot, without touching the stump with the other, you string up your bow,-, withfrom the quiver and draw an arrow frczr. q"?"? shoot it at a target twenty yards away.

Your arrow must hit the target to qualify.

“The ‘frou-frou flight’ is a modifi­ cation of the broadhead flight. One shot with a ‘frou-frou’ arrow for dis­ tance. The winner gets a nice fresh coconut cream pie slap bang in the kisser. Second place winner has the privilege of tossing the pie. The pie episode was only a gag, and was kept a secret. I don't recall who the prin­ ciples were, but the first prize was a fine gold pen and pencil set.

About three o’clock Nubbie assembled all the prizes. Harvey Hicks went into action on the P.A. system to call out the names of the winners. There were twenty-seven prizes for the men’s field and tin-can combined rounds and about seventeen for the same events for the women. All novelty event winners and winners of the two principal events were lined up and the parade started.

We filed past a bevy of four beautiful girls, borrowed for the occasion from 'the Rodeo at Barstow to make the presentations. As your name was called you stepped forward and received your award from one of the beauties. The few who were not fortunate enough to win a prize proved to be good sports and joined in the applause for those who did. As one archer put it. ‘I didn’t come up here to win prizes, I came to have fun.’ I believe he voiced the opinion of the majority.. For fun we had it cost us a total of ef one cr.e buck, b registration fee.

“It wasn’t long after the last prize was awarded that Bunny and I started back to Glendale.

“Well, there you are, ‘Walk-up’, my mythical friend. That’s how I remem­ ber -the Barstow Shoot. There will be another next year, and if you want a good time over some week-end in the early part of 1950, keep your eye peeled for an announcement in Archery Magazine sometime next spring.

Whether it is a local club champion­ ship, a state championship or a national championship, the cost is the same. A little more effort, a little more concen­ tration, a little more ability than the other fellow.

Some men have inherent natural abilities that seem to make things come easier to them, but looking more close­ ly at all champions you will discover there are long hours of practice, much self-discipline and close concentration to the business at hand. Men may scoff at such things as Archery Champion­ ships but deep in the human heart is the desire to excell or win, whether It be in sports, business or the social whirl. There are so many disappoint­ ments in everyday life that the dis­ tinction of being a Champion in your favorite sport gives a satisfaction be­ yond evaluation in ordinary terms.

WOODEN ARROW CASE Question: Can you tell me how to build an arrow case that would hold two dozen broadhead arrows and could be interchangeable with field or blunt arrows, so that either kind might be carried — or possibly- both? — L. G., Styles, Ky. Answer: I have never seen an arrow case made to hold broadheads and field arrows interchangeably but I believe the best way to fasten them in the case would be with rubber arrow clips. At one time Ben Pearson sold rubber strips to hold one dozen arrows at a time. I don’t know if he has them yet or not.

You could make your case to open like a suitcase with clips for one dozen arrows in the upper half and one dozen in the lower. An inside depth of 1-1/4" for each half should be about right. In making a case of this type 1 always make it up in one piece and then, after it has been sanded, the corners rounded, and one coat of finish applied, I cut it in two on the power saw. This method assures a perfect fit.

If you can’t find the rubber clips, they can be home-made. See my article in the April ARCHERY which covers a home-made bow quiver. The same procedure used in making the clip for this quiver can be used in making long clips to hold a dozen arrows.

SMOKING ARROWS Question: Would be pleased to receive any information you have on “smoking" arrows, by chemical or other means, giving methods of attach­ ing and igniting same. We are interest­ ed in putting on a show and have seen these at exhibitions and wondered how they were produced—R.S.R., Winni­ peg, Manitoba.

Answer: Sorry but I cannot help you on this one. I have had several inquiries along this line. If any of our readers know of a formula that works, I would be glad to pass it along.

MAKING FEATHERS STICK TO METAL SHAFTS I have received quite a few letters from archers who are having trouble holding feathers on metal arrows in wet weather. The following method has always worked for me but I keep my fingers crossed every time I use a new set in the rain because I have known of other archers who use the same method in so far as I can tell by their correspondence, who have trouble. If the feathered end ^...l of the arrow will not stand being submerged in water two or three hours without the fea’ ’’’ be rethers coming off, they should fletched.

With No. 1 sandpaper, roughen the shaft where the feathers are to be attached. DO NOT TOUCH this sur­ face after sanding. The least trace of oil on the metal will prevent proper adhesion of the feathers. Next lacquer the sanded surface and when dry, ce­ ment the feathers on. I use Duco cement but probably many of the fletching cements would work just as well.

It you wish to paint between the feathers, OK., but this will not keep out the moisture as it will work down the barbs.

Metal shafted broadheads used in tournament shooting should always have their fletching tested by soaking in water, for if one of these happened to shed a feather in flight the results might be serious.

The “Forty Niners” will descend upon Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, starting in a slow trickle of persons about July 2 5 and in a steady stream of archers July 30 and 31.

“Claims” have been staked (regis­ trations) from all parts of the United States and Canada. Advance registra­ tions indicate a possibility of breaking all National attendance records.

Weighing of bows will be from two to five p.m., Sunday, July31, Sports Island Archery Field, Lake­ side Park. Flight shooting will begin at 6 a.m.. Monday, August 1 at the Fond du Lac Airport, one mile east of the city on Highway 23. Shooting will be from south to north. Free dough­ nuts and coffee will be served to the flight contestants.

Clout Chairman, Rod Harrman, and his able assistants will introduce some new innovations in clout scoring. Clout shooting will take place at the Fair­ grounds. located in the southeast sec­ tion of Fond du Lac on Highway 55.

Assisting Harrman on clout will be Branaka, Russell and Henderson on the men’s line. The women and junior line will be handled by Min Russell, Edith Radtke and Dorothy Branaka. Pat Jen­ kins will handle the 140-yd. clout. Bob Grebe reports the field will be in first class condition for the tournament.

Practice shooting on the field will be available the entire week before the tournament. The archers who arrive early may shoot on the Fond du Lac archers’ 2S-target field range at Hobbs woods, five miles south of Fond du Lac. Entertainment Chairman. This <:■ ganization, established in the heart of the deer and bear country of the Upper Peninsula, should attain great suc­ cess. REGIONAL TOURNAMENTS It has been suggested that the N.F.A.A. promote and place considerable emphasis on Regional N.F.A.A. Cham­ pionship Tournaments. The suggestion was to promote such tournaments annually in the various regions, but to skip the regional meet in any year when the National is held there. Such a system of tournaments would assure almost everyone a chance to compete in “major” meets, year in and year out. In addition to winning recognition in a sort of “Minor League,” more and more archers would get together to discuss their problems and iron out or readjust honest differences of opinion.

I can’t help but think that such Regional Tourna­ ments could become very successful. Perhaps the National could establish Field Archery Medals for such tournaments and make them available to the sectional tournaments ar. a moderate price. Why not consider this possibility and discuss its merits at your State Association meets this summer? If it meets with the approval of your state organizaion, then perhaps you can join hands with neighbor­ ing states to sponsor such a meet in 1950? Why not send your reactions to this possibility to the magazine? Other readers may be Interested in your reactions.

ARCHERY SONGS Many types of organizations and sports have their own rousing songs that are meant to stir the souls of the par­ ticipants to greater efforts or to exhibit jolly good fellow­ ship. Ladies and gentlemen, I am pushing sixty, and any person who gets bitten by the bow bug at that age, even though he has in the past, been of sound mind and body, cannot be alto­ gether accountable for future utter­ ances. So sharpen your broadheads, grease your shafts, and nock your ar­ rows; it might be an act of mercy not to let novices of such delicate ages linger in the sunshine of such a de­ lightful art.

I was born and raised in the State of Maine. My father was a lumber op­ erator of the larger variety, having at different times, lumber camps and op­ erations from River DeLoup, Canada to Bingham, Maine. Being a woodsy feller, I had opportunities for hunting and fishing during school vacations and summers. And my Pop, being rather a nice guy, allow-ed me to tag along many a time. I shot my first deer at the ripe old age of twelve, and have been toting a .30-30 carbine ever since, on and off, until I sort of hung it loosely on the pegs for a bow and arrer. I finally pushed it firmly back on the pegs to make room for the bow.

I had the usual boyhood experience with bows, making them out of hickory and maple. I popped a few squirrels and rabbits which in those days were so thick that the law of averages would allow a kid to bump one off now and then. But ray life’s big mistake was __ that I quit the ancient weapon as time wore on.

About three years ago I bought my son an archery set of the usual variety.

The bow wasn't very good, as he broke it at about the fifth draw. But do you know they put out a $64.00 pamphlet with that little pile of kindling that sort of interested the old man.

1 bought a 351b. bow and a bunch of arrows that went with it, and got another pamphlet, and went to work.

That winter, after a month or two in the cellar, which is large, I actually got so I could keep my arrows from going through the cellar windows, and from bouncing off the floor timbers, which annoyed my wife. And truly I believe that today those same arrows would go just as wild with the best 351b. bow, no matter how good the archer. At that, the arrows were probably well worth the price.

Well, as I became able to hit the gold on a 4 8” target, once out of ten shots at 15 yards, I thought I should get a really good hunting outfit, as my past habits led me more to the hunting type of shooting. During this practice period I had read of Howard Hill and Art Young and everything on archery I could get my hands on. Being an ardent fly fisherman for many years, I used the same reasoning I would in buying a new rod; the best is none too good.

Being what would be generally term­ ed a small man, I suppose I leaned to thinking something like a bantam roos­ ter, and decided that a 60-lb. job would be OK. until I could work up to a little more weight. So-o-o-o I ordered a very nice 60-lb. bow, backed with Fortisan, c<?urse> and a set of arrows to fit.

to wait for the new tackle to arrive, kind of giving the old twig a chance to rest.

It came all right, one fine day. That evening, I wasn’t surprised, but I am now, that I managed to string it with­ out any apparent trouble. I went down the cellar stairs sort of bracing my shoulders, because the darn thing did look alive and slightly forboding.

I faced the target, concentrated on the center, as the book says, nocked the arrow and braced myself a little more than usual, as I knew it would take slightly more strength to pull a 60-lb. bow than a 35-pounder. I brought my elbow up, confident of bringing the arrow nock as usual to the corner of niy mouth.

Did you ever have a guy punch you in the nose, at an unguarded moment?

Did you ever suddenly have your face slapped? Did you ever really get kicked by a mule? Those are all surprising things, but to me none of those things could have been half so surprising or mortifying as the obstinacy of that bow.

Was I pulling on a rope tied to the Queen Mary, or was it really a bow meant for men to draw and shoot? I turned the beautiful shiny thing around sideways, looked at the graceful curves.

It seemed very masterful and more hu­ man at this point. Even the nocks seem­ ed to turn up their lower corners on the back and grin slightly. I said, under my breath, "Bub, I paid good money for you. I have told a few friends of your weight. It’s soon going to be backyard shooting, and some of those friends will be around. You and me, Bub, have got to have it out, and we haven’t got too long to have it out in.”

I nocked another arrow, got it back a little more than halfway, and re­ leased. Part of that arrow is still in the floor timbers. I drew another and aimed practically for my big toe. Gain­ ing a little more on the draw, this one hit the top of the target. I drew an­ other and another. I finally could draw it back until my outstretched thumb just touched the point of my chin, and I called it quits.

The next morning I had really been kicked by a mule. There wasn't a muscle above my knees that could func­ tion without pain. The bow and I just talked things over for the next few days. I caressed and admired it, but no matter how much it smiled and beckoned, it couldn’t draw me into com­ bat. Because when I moved my arms a certain way, or moved my shoulders a . • _______ _________ . certain way, something said, i'Dvnthnr “Brother, just lay low. It may be only a day or two longer before you can take a chance.”

Repeated bouts went on for some time. Today, after three years, I shoot a_ 55-lb. bow and like it. I have since read in the book something that goes like this, “Shoot as heavy a bow as seems comfortable. Too heavy a bow will keep your score down and tiro you quickly.” I believe, in the best circles, it is known as being ‘over bow­ ed.’ So now-a-days when I see an archer about my size shaking and quaking under the strain of a 60- or 70-lb. baby, I just say, to myself, of course, to be

polite, “My brother in crime, you are showing off; but with Lady Luck you may be one of the first to drill a deer with that quaking half a tree, this hunting season."

You have possibly heard a man say, “My wife isn’t much of a sport.” WelL my wife isn’t that kind of woman. Snc has hunted with me, tramping miles on end, carrying a nice little Sporter .22 high-power, possibly unloaded. She is especially absent minded when hunting.

It's the thing for women hunters to do. carry a sleek little Sporter, around five pounds in weight, made up special; whether it is loaded or not is imma­ terial. But on all those jaunts the thins she has enjoyed most is the hot tea, made over the noon fire, and the brizzled slices of pork between two raised biscuit halves, the smell of the wood burning, and especially the Readers Di­ gest or some other snack of reading she brought along. I have known well for years the way she would look back on the path, once in a while that what was uppermost in her mind was, “Is that so and so circling in a manner that is bringing us back to camp before long?’’, or “Will that so and so ever turn around and go back to camp?” By way of subterfuge she might say, “Would you know your way back if it got dark?” or “It really looks like rain, Dear," or “The sign on the door at the camp said supper at 5:30 sharp, dining room closed at 6:30.”

My wife has always loved to fish. She has spent hours, both in the boat and on the banks of streams with me fish­ ing. She has some very fine fishing gear.

A woman who fishes should have lighi and very fine fishing gear. I use mostly dry flies, and occasionally wet flies. She has her best luck, not covering the streams by walking along in the usual manner, but sitting in one place, reading stories to the trout in a voice so inaudible that you can’t even hear it.

Boat fishing she loves best. One day as we were trolling, she had her rod under her knee, quietly reading some story to the fish, when a rainbow weigh­ ing about five pounds hit her fly. We were surface trolling with streamers.

As the fish hit her streamer and all but dislodged the rod from under her knee where she had it held nicely, with her foot on the grip, she did say, “My good­ ness, Jim,” and, grabbing her rod, she started winding her reel the wrong way.

As far as I know, the fish is still en­ joying “Life in these United States,” as ■ usual. But at least she was a little dis­ turbed. She had lost her place iu her reading, and I know the little fishes would have been disappointed no end if she had not found it.

I have endured these sports for a good many years in an effort to give my wife the utmost pleasure. As you can see, I have not shown the slightest degree of selfishness. While the big shots were knocking 'em over up in the Portola country, a few of us “scrubs" were having our "kicks" in the Tobias Peak area, just across the Kern line in Tulare county.

The gang of stick-benders who took part in the hunt were: Frank Banchio.

"Bobcat" Bryson, Tommie Thomas, Jack and Fred Green, Wes Jones, Eddie Brittan and those two wild son-in-laws ot mine, Bennie Koch and Nate Mor­ rison, who have taken to bow shooting like ducks to water.

I didn’t go up to the camp until the evening of Thursday the 9th having been almost down with a cold and a touch of Hollywood bellyache (peptic ulcers).

Sunday, the day before the season opened, was a busy day in my shop, with eight or ten archers who had, as usual, waited until the last minute to make a few new arrows, sharpen broadheads, make new strings, put on a few new feathers, etc. And BIG talk— who was going to get the biggest buck and who was going to carry it in for him or else. Around four p.m. every one seemed to be satisfield with his gear, so the cars were loaded with camping equipment and grub and the gang shoved off for Gooseberry Flat or Bow Busters' Rest as it has been re­ named. I then had a chance to look over my own sticks and strings.

Bennie came back down Wednesday with news that there were lots of bucks in that country and that nearly every one of the boys had shots. He was the only one that had connected.

The arrow cut through the hide on the side of the deer’s shoulder, not doing much damage, hurting his feelings more than anything else. He was a good 85 yards away, standing facing Ben. Ben stayed down long enough to meet his new daughter who was born on the 6th, the morning the season opened and hurried back up to try again.

It made me feel pretty good when I landed in camp Thursday to note the condition thereof. The gang had raked up all the leaves, buried all the tin cans and trash that the gun hunters had left there the year before, cleaned out the spring and made a pet out ot Claude Norris the Fire Warden. Of course, I had to listen to a lot of tall stories and alibis about all tlie bucks that had been shot at and just missed by a hair.

There was one buck especially that gave all the boys some fun. He was a yearling that should have had only spikes but had the misfortune to grow a little nubbin’ about the size of a small acorn on his right antler, which made him legal game. He would be in the same opening just off the road each morning, ready for a go with them but careful to keep at a safe distance.

The boys went through the same rou­ tine every morning—get out, string bows and all take a shot at him. He would then disappear in the brush. He seemed to get a kick out of the game but was so small that I don’t think anyone really wanted to hit him. Each morning someone would nearly always make the remark, “All right guys, let’s set up there and take our shot at ‘Nubbin’ and get on with the days

hunting." He never disappointed us.

Friday morning, Ben who had taken over tlie job as camp cook, rolled us out plenty early to a dandy breakfast of bacon, eggs, flapjacks and coffee.

(Boy, what coffee!) We were off in Eddie’s jeep and dropped oil in twos or threes in the meadows around Tobias Peak. The deer seemed to be browsing around the edges of the meadows. Oh yes, ‘Nubbin’ was at his station and got shot at as per schedule.

Around ten a.m. I was sitting on a hillside watching a little meadow when a nice “forkie" came over the ridge about a 125 yards above me on the other side of the canyon. “Osage, here comes your venison,” I thought, as he headed right down toward me. “All I have to do is just be patient and wait till he gets to within about 30 or 25 yards and let him have it!” But no, Mr. Buck had a different plan entirely.

he walked over to the shade of a little pine, yawned a couple of times and proceeded to drop down for a little shut eye. And still over a hundred yards from the one who wanted to meet him so badly at closer quarters.

There wasn't much chance to get any closer by stalking, tor between us there was a solid mass of snow brash.

I finally got to within about 80 yards and no chance to get any nearer. I sat down for about an hour and waited, in hopes that he would finish his nap and come on down and get acquainted.

Nothing doing. He was perfectly satis­ fied to let things rest at status quo.

TO THE CLUB SECRETARIES I am a Secretary, too, and I therefore know just how busy you are. However, please, for our sake and for the sake of your own members, try to get your Mail Tournament, scores in earlier.

We have set the fifth of the month as our deadline which just gives us time to meet the magazine deadline, but being good natured we have always tried to get late scores in even though it has meant the complete revamping of the re­ port at the last minute. Usually at night and several days past the deadline. This has been a big inconvenience to Roy for it is a big job of type setting. Each month several clubs come in alter the report is mailed and we couldn’t change it. The scores will still count in the annual results.

By HARTMAN D. EGGER Syracuse. Ind. Ninety-nine percent of all arrows are fletched with turkey wing pointers, yet there seems to be a divergence of opinion as to what constitutes a good feather. In general, archers want long feathers with wide vanes for hunting and roving equipment. The target archer is satisfied with a medium size feather if it suits him in other ways.

Length and width are not necessarily the test of good feathers. Feather qual­ ity depends on the use to which the feather is put. If you are making archery range arrows, for example, you probably want to take as many cuts as you can from each feather and stiff­ ness is not too important. On the other hand, if you are making that fancy set of deer hunting arrows which may have to stand some snow and rain, you are probably taking only- one, choice, fiveor six-inch cut from a feather and what you are after is a very stiff feather.

Turkeys frequently have one or two short, narrow, very- stiff pointers which are wonderful for high grade hunting tackle. The point is that all long fea­ thers are not of high quality. The good feathers are those feathers close to the leading edge of the wing. Further back on the wing are long, wide feathers which are soft. Back of these are small­ er medium grade feathers. A turkey may have as many as seventeen or eighteen feathers on a wing, but only' a part of them make good fletching material.

Probably the best indication of qual­ ity is in the thickness of the vane of the feather, together with the height of what is generally thought of as the oil line of the feathers. This can be seen by looking at the underside of the feather from the quill end and ap­ pears as a shiny strip about threeeighths to one-half inch wide.

The vane of a feather is composed of hundreds of narrow little feathers having tiny hooks on them which cause them to stick together to form the full vane. The vane may be pulled apart and put back together several times without damage to the feather.

The little hooks form sort of a natural zipper. Incidentally, if the hooks no longer take hold and the vane will no longer stay together, a. little steam from your tea kettle will often prove ef­ fective.

In order for an archer to fletch with a feather, most of the quill must be removed and a flat or concave surface provided to enable it to be glued to the shaft. This process is known as feather grinding; although grinding is not the only process used to prepare feathers. High speed cutters and saws are also used. Another method seldom used now days is to strip the feather.

Stripped feathers lay over to one side and do not work in modern fletching jigs. However, they may be used for hand fletching methods such as pinning.

Ground feathers usually have the quill removed on one side of the fea­ ther as well as the bottom. This side grinding allows the feather to straight­ en out. Feathers have a natural curve.

This curve is usually a portion of a circle which would have a diameter of about thirty-six inches.

One day, when I had become what I consider just a fair archer, my wife was watching me shoot. She casually said, “That looks as though it might be fun.” The gun hunting bug had bit­ ten her, the fishing bug had sunk its fangs into her feminine flesh. Their venom had never poisoned her in the slightest. Brother, this was the Bow Bug with fangs so long and sharp that they broke off somewhere in her tiny anatomy between her heels and the top of her head, which are six feet apart.

She was terribly poisoned. She now pulls a 40-lb. bow and shoots a 27" arrow, and she took the women archer’s first prize at Bear Brook in the fall of 19 48. My name did not get into print.

Must have been a mistake somewhere along the line.

In the fall of 1947 the subject of archery came up while Mrs. Harvey and I were talking with Mr. Ed Heilman, head of Camp Maranacook, one of the oldest boys’ camps in Maine. He told us about’ the ■' “point of aim archery” they had used .in the past. I said that f thought field archery properly set up for the boys would hold their interest and attention. We told him of our in­ terest in instinctive shooting as applied to hunting. The subject sort of dropped there. We have had a family camp in Maine for years, which is not far from Camp Maranacook. In June of ’4 8 Mr. Heilman called on us. He said, “You were telling me about field archery. I think you have something there that would be an excellent activity to add to our camp curriculum. Could you arrange classes so that you can take or thirty boys between the ages of eight and fifteen?” He told us that classes would have to start within a week to fit in with their program. We made an on the spot decision and accepted his proposition.

We have some fifty acres of wooded land, and , the only field equipment thereon was one straw target and some three or four targets out in the woods which we used, combined with stump shooting for our own amusement and target practice.

We spent that evening talking things over. We had shot a very Interesting dimensional animal course in Connecti­ cut, belonging to, and created by Mi. Roy Collins, a noted artist. We decided, stuffed animals suspended on ropes be­ tween trees would be the most interest­ ing to youngsters. By the way, one of our worries was, did we know how to handle the boys. Our experience was very limited, only having raised nine children of our own, most of whom now shoot.

In one week’s time, with the help of the four children we had in camp, we accomplished the following: We obtain­ ed burlap bags, straw and paint in suf­ ficient quantities to make 14 targets, swamped out paths, which were pretty much standard distances except that the longest was 70 yards instead of 80. Our targets consisted of deer, bear, rabbits and even a wild boar. Our layout was ready on time for the first class.

Before the summer was over, we had a mechanical deer that traveled forty yards, with a contrivance that made him jump along pretty much like the real thing. We used different sized V pulleys to decrease the speed of the running animal for the smaller fry, and increased the speed for the older boys.

Our own offspring also reaped the bene­ fits of the’ course.

Any archer would be surprised, and gratified, if he has not had the same experience, to note the intense interest of these youngsters, and the speed with which they caught on. Up to the last day of activity, they would beg to stay overtime for a few extra shots. How­ ever, their schedule demanded that they return to camp punctually. On the final night at the award assembly, when Mrs. Harvey and I went down to make pre­ sentation of autographed arrows to the best in each class, Mr. Heilman advised us that our work had been a complete success.

My wife does the rudimentary work.

She is much better at it than I. I am the big shot (still a bantam brain) that puts arrows in the bear at 70 yards.

Why not? I know to the inch, the dis­ tance. I practically live and sleep on the show off targets. I have found that two misses is the limit with the boys.

On the third the hero worship is about ready to bounce back and hit Tarzan on the kisser. But I don’t do so well other places. My wife did better in the female department at Bear Brook than

Thursday night there will be Plenty of fun in store for you at the FREE archer’s informal dance at Bernward Hall. Lee Righter’s orchestra will furnish the music. The dance will be the place to let off steam, pent up from a week of strenuous shooting. A great number of prizes will be handed out during the dance.

This year the men will shoot an In­ ternational Long Round instead of tlie traditional English York on Friday.

The Long Round distances are 100, 80 and 60 meters.

Teams shooting the team round should register with the N.A.A. Secre­ tary, Mrs. Olive U. Crouch, 2 Grace Street, Old Greenwich, Conn., at the earliest possible date.

Friday night the banquet will be held at the Hotel Retlaw, at which time the Championship medals and trophies will be awarded. A novelty field round will take place Saturday morning for those archers who wish to stay.
