Think about this for a minute. First of all the prospective members must find someone that is currently an NFAA Member, who is willing to lay his or her bow down and explain to the prospective member the benefits of belonging to the NFAA and the State Association. Let’s see ... I will have to explain the NFAA and the State organizations conduct tournaments, have Hunting programs and awards, Junior Archery programs, different Equipment Styles they may partici­ pate in and that we divide our archers by age groups. Wait a dam minute . . . this is going to take some time and I need practice for our State Tourna­ ment next week. Say friend? ... I think, Wayne Carr will be here in a short time and he will be able to help you. Besides I don’t have the required forms.

Does this sound familiar? It does to your President. I have heard this or like conversation for many years.

The last time was at the Archery Club of which I am a member. Sorry to say I tried to assist a member and his son in becoming NFAA and State members only to find that required forms were not available at the affiliated club. A letter to the State Secretary resolved this problem and I’m happy to report two new archers will soon join us on the shooting line.

and the NFAA in procuring prospec­ tive members and to make it easier for new members to join our associa­ tions I ask the following commitment from our NFAA affiliated Clubs and State Associations.

**Oranco Bowmen, Inc. of California hosted a 3-D Shoot on Sunday, October 13 th with part of the pro­ ceeds going to the NFAA Foundation Museum Fund. Oranco President Dave Donan stated “If every club would host one tournament and donate part of the proceeds to the Museum Fund it would only take a short period of time to raise enough money to build the NFAA Museum.”

Dave presented NFAA Executive Secretary, Pam Shilling, with a check in the amount of $350.00 and offered a challenge to all other NFAA Clubs to match the donation made by Oranco Bowmen. #

2) NFAA DIRECTORS AND STATE PRESIDENTS: Please make the required forms available to your affili­ ated Clubs and Pro Shops.

3) NFAA MEMBERS: Please ask a friend to join your State and National Field Archery Associations. Share the sport of archery and the fun. Ask a family to join you at your next club meeting.

A Word of Thanks . . .

In the hectic world we live in today, we often forget to take a few minutes to express our appreciation to others or just say “thanks” for a job well done. I would like to take this opportunity to express my own sin­ cere appreciation to four very special individuals: Jan Kowalsky, Al Mitchell, Alberta Gehrett and Kellee Carr. For those of you who don’t rec­ ognize these names they are the other members of the Headquarters Staff. Without their friendship, patience, their caring attitude, and especially their hard work the Headquarters office would not run as smooth as it does. I offer them a spe­ cial and sincere “Thank You”.

Looking Ahead . ..

1992 will certainly be a busy year. Starting with our February Annual Meeting which will be held in a warm (?) location known as Rapid City, South Dakota. Be sure to read the May/June issue of ARCHERY for an update of the Annual Meeting.

March will find us again in Kansas City, Mo. for the NFAA Indoor National Tournament. Don’t forget a $15.00 REGISTRATION DISCOUNT is available if you regis­ ter early. The NFAA Outdoor National Tournament, held in July, will this year find us in a new location called Wausau, WI. Reports from our Sec­ tional Councilman (Wally Rueger) and Wisconsin NFAA Director (Bud Beaudry) advises the Rib Mountain Bowmen are hard at work getting ready for this tournament.

Labor Day Weekend (September 5th & 6th) will find many of us attending the 2nd NFAA 3-D Tournament Co-Sponsored by Easton and will again be held at the Catawba County Wildlife Club in Hickory, NC. McKenzie “NatraLook” targets will again be the offi­ cial 3-D targets. Detailed tournament information will be provided in upcoming issues of ARCHERY.

Three NFAA National Tourna­ ments, Sectional Indoor and Outdoor Tournaments, State Tournaments and of course numerous local Club tournaments will certainly keep everyone busy this year. So don’t miss the opportunity to visit new loca­ tions, re-new old friendships and establish new ones.

RIC RULING: Article 11, Sec. C and D., Para. 1, page 34 states: “Any type of sight and its written memorandum may be used.” The product is legal in Freestyle and Freestyle Limited. There are no restrictions on a draw check in either of these two shooting styles.

Draw checks are prohib­ ited in the Bowhunter styles of shooting as per Art. II, Sec. E, para. 6, page 34: “No clickers, draw checks or levels will be allowed.” Scopes are prohibited in Freestyle Bowhunter by Article II, Sec. F, Para. 1, page 36: . . Hooded pins or scopes cannot be used . . . .” and in Freestyle Limited Bowhunter by Article II, Sec. G, Para. 5, page 36: “All rules of the Competitive Bowhunter shooting style, except those excluded by this section, shall also apply to the Freestyle Limited Bowhunter shoot­ ing style.” Thus, under present regu­ lations, the “Bright Starr" by MaurLann Enterprises would be legal in Freestyle and Freestyle Limited.

RIC 91-23 From: Don Dandino, New York Director The state director received the following letter from a league direc­ tor concerning scoring of an animal target:

“By the size of the kill zone an the interpretation of what is the line, the target may be scored two differ­ ent ways. On the enclosed target there are six arrow holes drawn.

Assuming that all arrows are first arrows, my interpretation would be. #1-0, *2-0, #3-18, #4-20, #5-20 and #6-20. Your interpretation at the state outdoor was #1'0, #2'0, #3'18, #4-18, #5-20 and #6-20. This shows that the difference in scoring is arrow interior. “Freddie” Troncoso . . . gentleman, archery technician, coach and enthusiastic archery supporter.

Like all Sports, in Archery there have been many who momentarily become famous or well known.

Generally their “fame” comes from one or two personal accomplishments that fades as soon as another comes along to match those accomplish­ ments.

There are others who do not seek fame or work at becoming “Legends” or well known personalities, it simply happens. The reputation of these indi­ viduals will outlive the individual’s active years in a sport and almost without exception you will find these individuals are genuinely sincere and giving people. Many of us have known “Freddie" for many years and I’m sure we will all agree all of the above can be said about him.

Bom in Los Angeles, as a young­ ster “Freddie” became fascinated with archery from watching early Howard Hill short movies on archery. This early interest in archery has stayed with “Freddie” from his early success in tournaments and hunting to his acknowledged expertise as an “Archery Technician” to a successful manufacturer of archery accessories.

Fernando Troncoso was first given his nickname by Roy Hoff (Archery legend and one-time owner of ‘Archery’ magazine) and to this day is known to countless archers as “Freddie.”

Originally a professional musician by trade, Freddie became a very suc­ cessful tournament archer, winning many local and major tournaments.

One of the first to develop and use “rope” releases, Fred was one of the

first to prove a “release” shooter could out-perform a “finger” shooter. A back injury sustained while working as a police officer in 1965 limited Fred’s ability to shoot a bow, however, it did not curtail his interest and life long enthusiasm for archer)'.

In 1961 Fred began making “dou­ ble-loop” releases and plastic arrow rests. This early start has grown into a very successful company. The name “Golden Key” is known intemation-

ally as a major supplier of archery accessories. A self acknowledged “tin­ ker” Freddie owns at least 19 patents of his own and has part ownership of four additional patents covering diver­ sified fields of invention.

In 1970, at the urging of Roy Hoff, “Freddie” wrote his first article for Archery magazine on the technical aspects of archer)' and his articles con­ tinue today. Through his articles “Freddie” has helped countless archers

solve their shooting problems and improve their shooting ability by reviewing such items as: Nock break­ age, String Walking, Bare-shaft testing, Overdraw system, Hand placement on the bow Handle, Shoulder Position and Correct Arrow size.

A member of the NFAA since 1961, Freddie has coached many archers who became State, National, World and Olympic Champions, not the least of which was his wife, Eva. A member of NFAA recently wrote Headquarters requesting techni­ cal information. Freddie Troncoso’s name and address was provided for assistance. A few weeks later Head­ quarters received a Thank You letter from this member with the following comments: “Aside from the exchange of correspondence, I had occasion to speak to Freddie. He was a very pleas­ ant and patient individual who put up with a lot of questions imposed upon him and went through the trouble of supplying me with some very helpful information.”

Every two years the California Archery Hall of Fame looks back at those who, while residents of California, made significant contribu­ tions to the sport of Archery. This month (January, 1992) Fernando V. Troncoso will be one of those so hon­ ored.

On behalf of all Archers, we extend a sincere appreciation to a gra­ cious gentleman, “Freddie” Troncoso who is a life-long supporter of archery in all forms and tries to give back to the sport by way of helping others to improve their shooting ability. <

NEW “FACE” COMMENTARY If you haven’t seen the new “Vegas” face, you are in for a real sur­ prise! For years, we have been shooting the 18cm F1TA face with the eventual­ ity and occurrence of perfect scores appearing only a few times when “Mr. Machine” Terry Ragsdale shot perfect 1200 scores as Vegas then turned around and shot perfect 1200 accumu­ lative scores at Cobo Hall during the same year.

Yes, it is a recognized fact that there were several perfect 600 scores shot at Vegas during the first two days of competition during 1991. Also obvi­ ous, was the fact that the elimination shoot-off format pretty well took care of the mass perfect shooting as the bat­ tle of the nerves slowly took its toll— eliminating many great shooters, one-by-one, until the surprise finale when the new champions emerged vic­ torious and triumphant.

Meanwhile, the IBO 3-D Move­ ment continues to draw more partici­ pants by enacting rules and equipment regulations that help the shooters, while we continue to make the targets smaller and more difficult. This, to me, doesn’t make good sense at all! Please allow me to mention that tire opinions expressed in this article have been polled and compiled from conversa­ tions with several top NFAA shooters via telephone, in addition to those expressed by this writer. Also bear in mind that the opinions expressed, implied or documented, are not those of the NFAA, its officials, nor any of the supporting prime sponsors of the Vegas Tournament.

During the mid-seventies, a group of NFAA Pros assembled together and developed a new field target face which utilized and counted the aiming dot as “five” versus shooting for the white ring to score a “five.” All the remaining rings were also divided in half which produced the current Field Face we know today. There is no doubt that this application raised a cry and hue from the masses of shooters. On the

other hand, it is also true that we have all become better shooters due to the demands of shooting for the center dot in place of the larger white ring.

Returning to the new “Vegas” face situation, the popular consensus seems to be that somewhere along the line we have perhaps skipped a beat and gone way too small, making the round so dif-

Is archery threatened in your community? Here’s one solution by George Hurteau, and the Maine Bowhunters and Sportsmen.

It’s strange when you stop to think about it, because for most of us, shooting bows and arrows is part of our lives, a matter of fact, and some­ thing we too often take for granted.

When we were young, we were taught that if we did what was right, obeyed laws and worked extra hard, we would be thus rewarded. Well, most of us adhered to those rules and worked hard to have nice things and obtain the American Dream of own­ ing a piece of ground and a home to enjoy.

The scenario may sound like it has a happy ending. But hold on to your quivers because something is def­ initely wrong in the land of the free.

It’s the recent, fast-growing trend across America to ban the use of archery equipment—yes, BAN! As I sit here writing this, battles are being fought in town offices and city halls across the U.S. between antis and archery groups. Whatever you call them—Anti-Shooting, Anti-Hunt­ ing, Anti-fishing and Anti-Wildlife Management groups (they’re all the same, you know) have cited the 90’s as the decade they will put an end to bowhunting with a systematic, townby-town ban of archery shooting and bowhunting. Instead of stating their anti-hunting priorities, they’re enter­ ing through the “back door,” claiming to represent a public safety issue. The antis will stop at nothing to win their fight, and when their highly-emo-

tional inaccuracies about bowhunting and cruelty fail to work, they resort to questioning archery and public safety.

If we looked across the country at the hundreds of proposed ordinances to ban the use of archery equipment in counties and communities, it is interesting to note that they appear to be penned by the same hand. Each cites an alleged public menace and socalled extreme danger of today’s “high-powered lethal bows,” while their information is charged with sen­ sationalized emotion sprinkled with the everpresent what-ifs. In a particu­ lar case that I was involved with, an individual citizen addressed a city council with an emotional please, “Please help save my life . . .and possi­ bly your own, too!” This person said high-powered bows are “silent until

they hit,” with the same destructive powers of a high-powered rifle. “Let’s not wait for a tragedy,” she pled with the council, “before we change this menacing situation!”

It’s plain to see how the antis prey upon the uninformed public (and mis­ informed city fathers) who have little or no knowledge of archery and bowhunting. This leads to action from fear and emotion, rather than from intelligence, good judgment and com­ mon sense.

The one common denominator in the information presented to council and municipalities by the antis is the lack of justifiable statistics and facts.

UCA To Participate In International Conference Several UCA Board members will participate as moderators or speakers in the International Con­ ference on Improving Hunter Com­ pliance With Wildlife Laws scheduled for 20-22 January 1992 in Reno, Nevada. Papers will be pre­ sented by leading experts from Africa, Canada, Mexico, Russia and the United States. The conference goal is to develop an action plan to improve compliance through cooper­ ative efforts of hunters, conservation organizations, resource management agencies, the judiciary, conservation law enforcement officers, hunter edu­ cation programs, academic institu­ tions and the media. All participants will be involved in developing strate­ gies and methods to improve compli­ ance with conservation laws and regulations, and perpetuate the tradi­ tion of recreational hunting.

UCA Provides Input On Montana Governor’s Symposium On Hunting The Montana Governor’s Sym­ posium on Hunting Heritage is planned for 16-18 July 1992 at Montana State University in Boze­ man. Planning has been carried out by a group of Montana persons, with cooperative contributions from oth­ ers, including the Department of the Interior, United Conservation Alliance and Wildlife Management Institute. Purposes of this conference

will be to explore the human motiva­ tion to hunt from a cultural point of view, to address issues associated with hunting as a contemporary recre­ ational activity, and to review the history of wildlife conservation as an inseparable part of hunting.

USSR—Moscow—Soviets want Bowhunting. Evgeny Stroganov (Consultant of Tourism and Sport— Moscow) in a letter to the NFAA expressed interest in promoting and organizing the sport of Bowhunting in the Soviet Union.

Reports Out—Hunter’s Pay: Nationwide, hunters paid $442 mil­ lion in licenses, permits, tags and stamps during 1990. Those figures reflect the single largest contribution of any group to Wildlife including non-game wildlife management.

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE LEGISLATURE CALIFORNIA—The California Wildlife Federation is calling on all hunters to write or call Congressmen concerning a bill that threatens to end hunting in much of the Eastern Mojave desert. House Bill 2929 along with Senate (Bill 21) will not only deny access, but prevent hunting in habitat, teeming with deer, big horn sheep, quail, chuker, coyote, bobcat and fox.

NEW YORK—HR 330 by U.S. Representative Bill Green would ban all hunting on National Wildlife refuges that, added up, is about the size of Montana.

Stay in the cover of the brush as you quietly walk to a location where you’ll be able to see predators as they come to your call, choose a set up where you’ll blend into the vegetation and you’ll have shooting lanes. Call and, if no success, move a mile. The length of time you call at each loca­ tion is determined by which animal you are trying to call and the topog­ raphy of the land. When calling fox and coyotes, call up to 20 minutes.

For bobcat, call up to 45 minutes.

For bear and cougar, call up to 1 hour. You 11 call the maximum time in sage flats and big canyons, and less time in small basins and creek

Unlike many states, Rhode Island's general laws included bows and firearm definitions and the standard 500 foot no-firing zone around resi­ dences. Since most people’s back­ yards aren’t over 500 feet, that eliminated a lot of residents from practicing archery at home until now.

Rhode Island Bowhunters say increasing bowhunter interaction at the legislative level as an informa­ tional force is beginning to show good effect. UBRI provided National Safety Council information and insurance industry recommendations at critical lobbying moments toward passage of this bill while Field Archery Association officers did some haggling with “hedgy” legisla­ tors. The key to passage was plan­ ning, working with legislators and not against them, persistence and unity among Sportsmen.

Another tip which might help you bag a coyote is to set up on a steep hillside with clumps of brush in front of you. Running coyotes can detect the slightest movement on flat ground. On a steep hillside they have to stop and look up to check for danger. Wait until he is moving and goes behind a bush before draw­ ing your bow or raising your rifle.

This should help you get a good shot. If you don’t pick this kind of ambush spot, Mr. Coyote will detect danger, turn inside out, and be zigza8g>ng through brush at a full run before you can wink an eye.

BOWHUNTING FEATURE OF THE MONTH

LETS PROMOTE HUNTING AND FISHING This past September 28th was the twentieth anniversary of Nation­ al Hunting & Fishing Day. Early in the summer I had suggested to all California International Bowhunter Education Program instructors that they set up a display table in their local shopping center to explain to the public why we love and support hunting, fishing and wildlife manage­ ment.

To follow through on my own suggestion for others, I had my wife Joan ask the manager of our local Longs Drug Store for permission to set up a table at the entrance of their store, which they gave us. Following this 1 phoned our Regional Fish & Game headquarters explaining what we were going to do and asked for lit­ erature to pass out to the public. Our Regional Manager Brian Hunter sup­ plied us with a trunk full of free material. To make sure we didn’t need a city permit I contacted our city police and city hall. They said all we needed was the store’s permission in Sonoma.

So at 9 a.m., Longs Drug’s open­ ing hour, we were there to greet all customers as they entered the store, saying Good Morning and asking if they knew September 28, 1991 was the twentieth anniversary of National Hunting & Fishing Day. Then as they finished shopping and came by again we gave all those interested free literature about California Wildlife and how sportspeople support and help finance wildlife projects and fish & game management with our dollars.

Currently, three million dollars a day ate provided by the United States’ sixty million sportspeople for wildlife conservation through license fees and

the self-imposed excise tax on archery, firearms and fishing equip­ ment in the United States.

The day was very enjoyable, we had many supporters of fishing, prob­ ably half the people supported hunt­ ing, and we had about a dozen that were irate antis. Not only did they disapprove of hunting & fishing, but also the fact that we were there explaining why we hunted and fished to everyone who would talk with us.

I believe that we helped many people in Sonoma understand that hunters and fishermen contribute much to the future of wildlife.

Sonoma is one of California’s cities which has a good-sized group of vocal anti-hunters who continually oppose

wildlife management through hunt­ ing.

I challenge every archery, firearm or fishing club in California and the Nation to do next year as we did this year. All it takes is one day and a few contacts ahead of time to get it all arranged. Our National organizations could help clubs by providing posters and supportive materials. Many orga­ nizations set up displays at sports events, which is great; but by going to your shopping center, you will meet the public, not just sports peo­ ple. You all should realize by now the non-sportsperson is who controls Hunting and Fishing’s future. if

RESULTS OF THE ANNUAL BAREBOW/BOWHUNTER SURVEY This past year, instead of distribut­ ing the annual questionnaire to just those BBF members attending the National Outdoor, we attempted to mail the questionnaire to every 1991 member-of-record. In some cases, however, we had only the member’s club address, which therefore required a third party to distribute the ques­ tionnaire. Even with stamped, pre­ addressed return envelopes, the response rate was only about 50%, which was much less than anticipated.

Nevertheless, both quantity and qual­ ity were sufficiently good to provide some interesting results. The 1991 sur­ vey will also yield a data base for future surveys. In fact, we will proba­ bly repeat the questionnaire in two or three years... just to get trends.

The 1991 survey was generally concerned with BBF members’: (1) favorite archery games, (2) level of competition, (3) archery experience, and (4) some equipment likes/dislikes. Of those who responded, 78% were male and 22% were female.

Stylewise, 78% preferred Barebow, 10% Bowhunter, and 12% Tradition­ al. Some shot more than one style.

Of the Traditional shooters, 40% used a recurve, while 60% preferred a longbow.

Compound bow shooters were asked if they wanted more axle-toaxle length. Surprisingly, 53% were happy with what they had. Of those wanting more length, their answers ranged from 43 to 54 inches, with 49.4 inches being the average. [Note: these statistics may be somewhat dis-

totted, since quite a few of those “happy” stringwalkers are already shooting old, long axle-to-axle bows.]

With 29% of the vote,the favorite compound bow among the BBF members was Pearson. Hoyt followed with 21%, and Bear and Astro tied for third with 16% each. No other brand had more than 4%.

Sixty-seven percent of the BBF members chose Field Archery as their favorite game. A 3-D or bowhunter round was second with 19%, followed by indoor with 13%. Independent of their favorite “game,” two-thirds of those responding intended to bow­ hunt in 1991.

The question regarding “level of competition” was apparently some­ what misleading, because a few didn’t think they were “competitive” at the national level even though they attended the National Outdoor. This was not the intent of the question.

Nevertheless, more than 72% of the members responding “competed” at the national level, 8% at no higher than the sectional level, 14% state level, and 6% local level. Sixty-five percent plan to go to their 1992 Sectional Outdoor, and only 37% to their 1992 Sectional Indoor. Sixtynine percent, however, plan to go to the National Outdoor at Wausau, and 43% plan to be in Kansas City for the National Indoor.

Of those who can’t make the Wausau tournament, 25% can’t afford the trip, 34% say it’s too far away, and 16% can’t get enough time off work. One misinformed archer

didn’t think he was “good enough.”

Through 1991, a whopping 71% of those responding have attended at least one National Outdoor. Several have attended 15, with the average being 6. Thirty-nine percent of those responding have attended at least one National Indoor (including one at Cobo Hall!), with the most being 11 and the average being 4.5. The last question asked was, “Exclusive of bowhunting, how long have you been competing in archery games?” The BBF “long-in-tooth” shows with 14-2 year being the average experience (counting kids, too). One BBF mem­ ber has been shooting for 48 years.

Survival Training . . .

PINE SAP GLUE

Being a tree farmer I have devel­ oped a fondness for the pines. To wit­ ness the gradual annual cycle of a whitepine tree has always impressively amazed me. Often a Christmas tree with cones in the home will warm and the cones will begin to burst. My brother Bill and I had finished remov­ ing a maple tree from his yard when we heard the popping of cones from one of his young pines. It is from these pines, spruce, or firs that we derive one of nature's offerings, pine sap glue.

I have seen birch bark canoes sealed and assembled with pine sap glue, the Indians used it in arrow mak­ ing and so we too can find use of this renewable natural resource.

Mike Navarro and I, on a recent bowhunting trip, collected roughly a pound of crusty sap drippings from both pine and fir trees. I simply boiled the sap in a coffee can for nearly twenty minutes until the sap thick­ ened and turned almost black in color.

Then skimmed the surface of un­ wanted bark and needles and poured the glue into a small breakable con­ tainer to cool. The glue soon will set and after removing it from the con­ tainer you will have a dark glue similar to a manufactured hot melt glue.

Adhesive qualities seem to be best

with wood. Pine sap glue has been used to set arrowheads to wood shafts and to adhere stone knife blades to antler.

Boil up some pine sap glue and discover for yourself its usefulness.

The following morning I was given a brief guided tour of the hunt­ ing reserve and by 10:00 a.m. I was dropped off at a well-concealed pit blind (called a ground hide), given a two-way radio for communication and left to observe a nearby water­ hole. By 2:00 p.m., the prearranged time for my lunch break pickup, I managed to restrain myself from shooting at over 15 different medium sized Impala Rams and an almost tro­ phy-sized male Duiker that unsus­ pectingly wandered within five yards of my hide. By the end of the first day, I had collected a nice Impala Ram and passed up over a dozen small to medium sized Warthogs.

During the following six days, I col­ lected a Jackal, three very nice Warthogs, missed a shot at a probably world record Duiker and passed up two easy shots at a Zebra and Kudu, having taken fine representatives of both those species on previous safaris. Of the four different hides that I used during my seven day hunt, the tree blind was the most productive and offered a spectacular vista of the surrounding terrain, with a 180 degree field of vision. 1 thor­ oughly enjoyed my week with the Ball family, the hunting was excel­ lent with exceptional Impala Rams and Warthogs in abundance. I highly recommend this mini safari for the first time” African bowhunter.

With only five days to spare before my scheduled departure for Zimbabwe, I was driven back to Pietersburg where I met up with an old friend, an accomplished bow­ hunter, game scout and safari opera­ tor, Tony Tomkinson. After driving for two and a half hours into the Northwestern Transvaal, we arrived at Karamattiki, one of three major SJD'ne reserves owned and operated by °ny. Limited to a mere four days of hunting at $220 per day, my specific

intention was to enjoy the cama­ raderie of hunting together with my bowhunter buddy and to take advan­ tage of a four day full moon cycle by attempting to do most of my hunting at night by moonlight, a concept I’d always wanted to explore.

Although Karamattiki, a 15,000 acre private ranch, held a wide vari­ ety of African game, I was specifi­ cally interested in finding a nice Gemsbok, a trophy 1 hadn’t yet col­ lected on any of my previous African trips.

With a brisk wind out of the southwest masking the sound of our approach, Tony and 1 spent the first afternoon stalking through the bush­ veldt. Unable to approach within comfortable bowrange, we passed up shots at two 60-inch Kudu Bulls, but later connected with one Warthog apiece.

Sleeping during the day, I spent the remaining three nights hunting from elevated hides located over game trails and waterholes. The shimmering light of the full moon cast eerie shadows across the sparsely vegetated veldt, with just enough illumination to distinguish my pin­ sights and the definitive outlines of the game. I was able to observe the nocturnal drinking habits of various species of game and noticed a defi­ nite behavioral change when water­ ing at night. After taking two Gemsbok over 35 inches, a Bushpig and a Jackal, I discovered that hunt­ ing by moonlight can be highly rewarding. After two successful “mini-safaris,” I was ready to leave for Zimbabwe.

High Country Archery, for a com­ pany that has been in the bow-making business for six years, has done remark­ ably well. They were smart enough to introduce a line of bows that tire archery' market readily accepted. High Country Archery's new Supreme Model bow is a departure from their previously made bows. The handle of the Supreme is designed to achieve optimum balance in the handle, and makes it an extremely stable, and balanced shooting bow, even witliout the hunting stabilizer.

High Country’ Archery has created a lot of attention in the last several years with tire tremendous performance in the ever-popular 3-D tournaments.

More major 3-D events have been won with High Country’ compound bows since 1987 than all other major bow­ makers combined.

The Supreme bow is built as a 22inch sand cast aluminum handle. The area, of the full 6-inch sight window, from die shelf to above the arrow rest area, is cut 5/8-inch past center. In the arrow rest area there is a bushing tapped 5/16 x 24 to accommodate the cushion plunger of many of the modem arrow rests that are on the market.

One of the striking features of the complete line of high country bows is the beautiful hardwood grips. These can be obtained in five different hard­ woods, lami-wood, rosewood, ebony, walnut, or cocobola, and can be ordered in either high or low wrist grip.

The really nice feature of the hardwood grips is that they are a two-piece grip, held together by a bolt, rather than a slip-on grip. The handle of the Supreme can be ordered in several dif­ ferent camo colors. I personally like the new hi-tech tree leaf camo pattern.

The reflex design handle on the Supreme is recessed in the arrow rest area to accommodate different rests and different overdraw systems designed by High Country.

The sight and quiver mounting area is also recessed to accommodate different styles of sights and hunting quivers. In the center of this area we 30

find a mounting pattern of two 10-24 tapped mounting holes. A bushing AMO standard 5/16 x 24 is provided on the back of the handle below the grip. This insert is used for hunting sta­ bilizers, bowfishing rods and reels, and other accessories. A special insert is located opposite the stabilizer insert for mounting the lower cable guard. The cable guard rod is inserted into the spe­ cial socket and is held into the proper position by two set screws.

In setting up the cable guard on die Supreme, we positioned tire cable guard at approximately 2 o’clock and set die screws. The cable slide is simple, yet adequate,the limb construction is solid Gordon glass and High Country calls it Gordon 625. This material is, without a doubt, the toughest limb material diat the archery industry has yet designed to withstand the tremendous forces of the modem speed bows. The limbs on the Supreme are straight, not recurved, and are generally parallel. At about 3 inches up the thickness of the limb, the limb tapers from both ends toward the cen­ ter and creates the hinge-limb-effect.

The limb slots are located in the center of the limb. The slots are 4 inches long to accommodate the large cams. The base of each limb slot is reinforced by a pair of washers which are fastened by an alien-head bolt and nut. The limbs of the Supreme are 16 inches long which gives the overall length of the bow at about 41 inches.

The cams on the Supreme are large by industry' standards and are approxi­ mately 3-5/8 inches long and, as we see later on in the perfonnance tests, they certainly store lots of energy, which in plain English means speed. The machine aluminum cams have draw length adjustability of 26 to 32 inches.

By simply swapping draw length mod­ ules (half-moon-shaped elements) attached to the cam with two alien­ head screws, the draw length can be changed over a six-inch range. The Supreme bow is completely fast flight system bow. The harness system is a 20strand 58-l/8th inch fast flight

string,and the cable strings are fast flight and are 41-7/8 inches long. Since the Supreme bow is a total fast flight system, the replacing of the fitted fast flight is maintenance that should be left to a qualified technician. The actual replacement of the harness system requires slackening of the existing string and harness, removing it and dis­ connecting the axle washer, spacer wheel assemblies from the bow limbs. It is very important to replace the cable system with one of exact length and twist. Incorrect harness or sloppy instal­ lation will cause the cams to roll over in an unsynchronized fashion, totally destroying the chance for fine-tuned arrow flight. Until an archer becomes well versed in bow maintenance and specifications, they best leave the har­ ness replacement to the experts at their local archery pro shop.

Before we started setting up the bow, we put it in the bow press and made about a dozen more twists on the fast flight cables, making sure that the roll-over of the cams were the same. I believe this procedure will prevent minor frays on individual strands and increase the strength of the fast flight material. The fast flight cable strings surely must be made with extreme care.

1 personally recommend at least 18 to 20 strands.

The High Country Supreme tuned very easily and was very tolerant with changing of a couple of arrow spines. It was very smooth and, surprising enough, very easy to draw in spite of the large cams. It was completely smooth with no obvious record of shock and in my opinion, one of the more pleasant hunting bows to shoot.

Using an AMO standard 30-inch arrow at 540 grains we detennined after several shots through our chronograph that the average speed was 215 feet per second. Of course this can greatly be increased using a lighter arrow and lighter point combination, being care­ ful not to go below the recommended 6 grain of arrow weight for the poundage that the bow is set at. ri

Scoring: A) The scoring is 5, 4, 3, 2,1, from the spot out.

B) All arrows will be scored and recorded before touching or drawing any arrows from the target.

C) An arrow cutting two rings shall be scored in the ring of greater value. Scoring is determined by the position of the shaft.

The shaft must cut through the lines and touch the area of higher value in order to be scored as the higher value.

D) Witnessed bounce outs or arrows passing completely through the target will be reshot.

E) Hits on the wrong target will be scored as misses.

F) When an arrow is dropped while the archer is in the act of shooting, he may shoot another arrow in place of the dropped arrow if the dropped arrow is within 10 feet of the shooting line.

G) If an archer shoots more than the prescribed number of arrows in an end, only the prescribed arrows of lower value will be scored. A penalty of one point will be assessed for each arrow shot over the prescribed number.

H) If an archer shoots less than the prescribed number of arrows in one end, he may shoot his remaining arrows if the omission is discovered before the end is officially completed; otherwise, they shall be scored as misses.

ficult that tournament attendance may indeed tend to suffer—a statement which remains to be proven as the tournament transpires.

Would shooting the 18cm face scoring inside-out have made a deci­ sive difference with regards to who is shooting tighter? What about the 1973 ALOA test face used successfully dur­ ing the shoot-off between Gene Parnell, Blair Peterson and Ellis Gibson, would this be the next logical choice in the natural evolution and selection of diminutive target face sizes? (Approximately 12cm W size.)

To refresh die memory of diose of you not familiar with die ALOA Test face, doe ALOA face had a three-inch gold further divided down to a oneinch center ring scoring 10 points for the one-inch center, nine points for a two-inch ring and 8 points for the remainder of die 3” ring. For a clincher and finale, this face could also be shot inside out—a natural and choice face for the Pros exclusively! (The outer rings are also divided.)

During a magazine interview with Joe Johnston, Tournament Director, after die 1973 tournament which was scored inside-out, Joe commented in part: “With regards to the inside-out scoring, we didn’t have any 900’s, obviously. Last year (1972), with the top shots shooting nothing but per­ fects, shooters who dropped a couple of arrows felt they could never catch up because the top shooters would con­ tinue shooting perfect. With this round, scored inside-out, it was tight enough that the top men might not shoot another perfect—in fact, they didn’t. So, shooters, a few points out, still felt they had a chance. It kept a lot of people competitive.” And Joe was right! Inside-out scoring is tough as it prevents mass perfects from becoming an everyday occurrence!

Returning to the 3-D scene, it is indeed a recognized fact that 3-D shooting is one of the most exciting growth factors which has occurred dur­ ing die 100 year history of competitive archery. This movement has given rise to great technological advances and

equipment sophistication for the sport of archeq'. Why is it so successful we ask? To begin with, 3-D shooting is a competition with oneself or against the field at your option.

In most 3-D shooting, governing bodies impose maximum distance limi­ tations as well as bow/arrow weight restrictions which serve to remove the elements of equipment advantages over the remaining field of competition.

Add to this the use of life-like critter replicas set at nominal shooting dis­ tances, and we find everyone has a chance to experience shooting success

by making targets easy to hit without unrealistic demands of exceeding human limitations with regards to degree of difficulty.

Will the new “Vegas” face survive the tournament trial during 1992 and remain the official face for succeeding indoor tournaments? Will the opinions of participants and onlookers have any effect on changing back to the 18cm face or scoring inside-out in place of the new smaller “Vegas” face? I certainly hope so. I also sincerely feel that the success and growth factor of the tourna­ ment depends on it!

BOWHUNTING plus (Continued from page 19) (population 6,000 and this writer’s home town) was considering an ordi­ nance to eliminate the lawful use of archery equipment (for target and recreational use) as a result of a com­ plaint by a citizen.

After countless hours and dozens of phone calls to gather information, 1 worked with the local archery club to obtain the facts and information nec­ essary. It wasn’t an easy task, and it’s my hope that through our work and this article we may help others faced with similar situations in their com­ munities.

Our initial objective was to gather reputable information on the safety aspects of archery. When this was presented to the council, we requested the formation of a commit­ tee representing both sides of the con­ troversy to adequately formulate an ordinance that would please all in­ volved parties. Essentially, what this move did was to buy us time—and it worked. After several months and numerous meetings, the town council became educated on the sport and its safety record. Soon it was easy for them to see the facts presented by the archers and emotions and unfounded fears of the antis. It was through edu­ cation and facts that the proposed ordinance was ultimately defeated by a unanimous vote! The council agreed to place no restrictions on archery and dropped the issue.

Almost like clockwork, the same issue was brought before two addi­ tional Main towns (Winslow and fewer) within a few months of the oulton issue. The proposed ordi­ nances were also soundly defeated in these towns, utilizing the same Method of presenting the facts and P Ucating the council and citizens. , ertainly not to be overlooked in ese victories was the support, presnce and unjry of aj[ Sportsmen who °° 'J'6 t*me t0 attend the meetings.
