The Vegas Shoot, known as the largest and most prestigious indoor archery tournament in the world, attracts novice to Olympic archers from around the globe and includes three intense days of no-error competition.

The weekend competition includes the traditional 3-spot, 20yard “Vegas Round” that made this tournament famous. Attendance in 2015 is expected to reach over 2,200 archers and thousands more spectators.

The Vegas Shoot offers the world’s largest indoor purse with a 2015 projected payout of over $250,000 in cash and prizes. The top Championship Male Freestyle will walk away with a record $30,000 check! All Championship archers that shoot a score of 900 will be guaranteed a prize of $1,000.

The Vegas Shoot is excited to introduce the new Young Adult Championship division (Freestyle and Limited Recurve). These new division classifications will allow young archers (ages 15-17) to compete for cash prizes on the same arena floor as the best archers in the world. These divisions will compete all three days. All Championship rules apply.

2015 will introduce a new partnership between The Vegas Shoot, Easton Foundations and the NFAA Foundation. Archery scholarships will be awarded to the top archers in all Junior divisions.

vegas shoot rules OFFICIAL VEGAS ROUND Target: All Championship (including Championship Young Adult) Divisions and Flight Divisions will shoot on either the 40 cm, “Vegas” three-spot target face with gold – red– blue (10-9-8-7-6) scoring areas or the 40 cm single spot face with 10 through 1 scoring rings. The x-ring of the 40 cm Indoor Vegas Face will be used for tiebreaks in the Flights divisions and for 4th place or below in the Championship divisions.

All Cub, Youth, and Young Adult Recurve division entrants will shoot on the 60 cm Indoor Face and all Cub, Youth and Young Adult compound shooters will use the standard single spot 40 cm Indoor Vegas Face or the “Vegas” three-spot target face.

Distance: 20 Yards Rounds: Each round on Friday, Saturday and Sunday will consist of ten ends; 3 arrows per end. The Cub, Youth and Young Adult divisions will shoot only two rounds; one each on Friday and Saturday.

would be as listed. The tournament guarantees the first three places for each division will not change; however, subsequent places may change based on attendance. Any division with less than 20 competitors will be awarded a 70% payback based on actual registration. This may be different than the published awards.

Non-English Speaking Competitors: Every effort will be made to contact those archers who require assistance to understand the equipment divisions, scoring procedures, tournament rules, etc. Please notify a tournament staff person if language or other circumstances may cause communication problems.

Flights: Flight placements will be determined at the discretion of the tournament management.

The method or methods used for determining the flights can be any combination of all three days of competition.

Junior Divisions: There will be two Junior divisions open to all archers, 17 years of age or younger; Freestyle and Freestyle Limited Recurve. Each division will offer three age groups in Male and Female categories; Cub (11 and under), Youth (12-14) and Young Adult (15-17). Recurve Division archers will use the 60 cm FITA-NAA Indoor Face. Compound Divisions (Freestyle) will use the 40 cm 3-Spot Vegas target face or the standard 40 cm single spot Indoor Face. NFAA equipment rules will apply. All Junior Divisions will shoot at 20 yds.

Junior Divisions will shoot only two rounds; one each on Friday and Saturday. Archers may only register in ONE style and division and will remain in the same division both days of competition.

Vegas Shoot awards will be presented to the top 3 place winners in each Junior Division. If attendance warrants, some divisions may be flighted. Ties: Championship division ties for first, second and third place will be determined by the highest total score from all three days of the competition (x’s will not be used to determine ties for the top three places). All competitors tied with the same high score at the end of the third day will compete in a shoot off to determine final places. The shoot off will include one practice-end followed by end-by-end sudden death. Arrows will be scored using inside out scoring, where only the x ring scores 10 points.

After each end, only those still tied with the highest score will continue in the shoot off. Each archer’s placement in the tournament will be determined by the order in which he/she dropped out of the shoot off. If more than one archer drops out of the shoot off in the same end, those archers will be placed based on their total score and x count, including the score and x’s accumulated in the shoot off.

All other ties (Flight and Championship) will be broken by the highest score and highest x count.

Ties remaining after x count, will equally split the combined payout of the tied positions. All Junior Division ties will be decided by the highest score in the following sequence 1) total x’s 2) 1st round score 3) 2nd round score 4) 1st end through 20th end.

Scoring: Electronic scoring will be implemented for the entire 2015 Vegas Shoot. You will be given further instruction at the Tournament regarding the proper procedures. Archers will be responsible for understanding the scoring procedures and verifying their scores. Free access will be provided to an Official Vegas Shoot Scoring link where scores will be available on smart phones, kiosks and monitors throughout the venue.

Protests: Any incident requiring immediate decision must be brought to the attention of a referee.

All protests must be submitted in writing to the TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR within one hour of the conclusion of the round where the incident occurred, accompanied by $50 U.S. The Tournament Rules Committee will convene approximately 1 hour after the last scoring end of each day to decide the outcome of each protest. All decisions of the Tournament Rules Committee will be final.

Equipment Failure: In the event of equipment failure, step back from the shooting line and raise your bow above your head. A referee will come to your assistance. The archer will have 15 minutes repair time without holding up the tournament. One practice end will be allowed. The archer shall be allowed to shoot any arrows missed during the 15 minutes. All make-up arrows will be shot at the end of the round.

899 will be eligible to shoot off for one spot with the 900’s in the Championship shoot off. The 899 shoot off will be held immediately following the last line- it will be a 1-arrow/end shoot off (1st arrow counting the X as a 10, then for each subsequent end counting the X as 10 scored inside out- no practice ends).

All qualified archers (899 and 900’s) must turn their scorecards in at the podium within 10 minutes of the conclusion of the regular round. The “Lucky Dog” can be the “Vegas Champion” by winning the 900’s shoot off or will place at the top of the 899’s in the regular ranking placement. $1,000 GUARANTEE FOR CHAMPIONSHIP 900 SCORES All Championship Division archers shooting a score of 900 will be guaranteed a minimum prize of $1,000.

Shooting Rules: 1. Each end (time period to shoot three arrows) shall be 2 minutes.

2. Archers shooting first will shoot the lower target face positions.

3. An archer shooting before or after the whistle signaling a 2-minute end will lose their highest scoring arrow or arrows equaling the number of errant arrows shot.

4. One arrow is allowed per spot on a three-spot target face. If there is more than one arrow in a single spot, you will lose your highest scoring arrow or arrows in that spot.

5. If more than 3 arrows are shot during an end, only the lowest 3 arrows will be scored. A penalty of one point will be assessed for each additional arrow shot. Misses or zeros will be counted as lowest arrows.

6. If an archer shoots less than three arrows in one end, he/she may shoot the remaining arrows if the omission is discovered before the end is officially completed; otherwise they shall be scored as misses.

7. An archer who purposely disfigures a target face to improve aiming or for any other reason, may be disqualified. Arrow holes may be repaired, provided there is no delay to the round.

8. Any archer conducting himself in an unsportsmanlike manner will be IMMEDIATELY disqualified.

9. Professional members of the NFAA are required to meet current dress code standards for competition.

1 0. Peak compound bow draw weight shall not exceed 80 lbs, with a maximum speed of 300 FPS with a 3% variance.

11. Maximum arrow shaft diameter allowed will be 0.422 inches, with a point diameter not to exceed 0.425 inches. The shaft diameter will include any wrap placed on the arrow and will include the size of the nock and the nock insert.

All archers will be reassigned for Sunday shooting times. Please check the posted information for your shooting time and target assignment.

Championship and World Cup awards ceremony will follow the shoot off.

Each line begins with two official practice ends. There will be no additional practice ends. Paid practice lanes will be located on the arena concourse, beginning at 6:00am each morning. All areas will be open for paid practice on Thursday beginning at 1:00pm. Equipment storage will be available from 6:00am until 30 minutes after completion of the final round. The bow storage will close as listed in the schedule each day. It is the archer’s responsibility to retrieve their equipment before that time as it will remain inaccessible until the following morning.

All shooting times are subject to change based on participation. Please remember that you are responsible for arriving at the correct target at your assigned shooting time.

Following day two of the world-famous Vegas Shoot, the top sixteen World Cup point earners from each category will shoot off in head-to-head competition in front of a roaring Vegas crowd. Compete in front of thousands against the world’s best!

To qualify for the Las Vegas Indoor World Cup Final, archers must participate in at least two of the four stages scheduled, one of which must be The Vegas Shoot: Marrakesh, Morocco | 8-9 November 2014 ■ Bangkok, Thailand | 6-7 December 2014 ■ Nimes, France | 23-25 January 2015 ■ Las Vegas, USA | 6-7 February 2015 ■

The archers with the most accumulated points (from their best three results) will compete at the South Point Hotel in Las Vegas on Saturday at 7:00 pm, February 7, 2015, in the Indoor World Cup Final.

The top three participants in each category (Recurve Men, Recurve Women, Compound Men and Compound Women) will compete for the following prize money: 1st place: 2nd place: 3rd place:

2. All arrows must remain in the target, untouched, until scoring is completed.

3. Any archer deliberately touching any questionable arrow or any part of the target assembly (including other arrows, faces, pins, mat or stand) will result in the questionable arrow being scored in the lower scoring area.

4. The three-spot target face is scored on the gold (10,9), red (8,7), and blue (6) rings. The target face must be placed on the mat in an upright position.

5. Arrows must touch the line to be in the next highest scoring area.

6. Any arrow that passes beyond the shooting line a distance greater than 10 feet as measured to the closest part of the arrow, will be considered a shot arrow. See mark on the floor.

7. If an arrow is embedded in the target beyond the nock and a referee cannot determine the value of that arrow, it will be considered a pass through, and will be re-shot. NO ARROWS WILL BE PUSHED BACK. 8. Each competitor must complete and sign his own scorecard. Both scorers must also sign it.

When there is a difference on the two cards, the lowest score must be taken. ANY ARCHER TURNING IN AN INCORRECT SCORE CARD WILL BE SUBJECT TO DISQUALIFICATION. Smoking is prohibited in the shooting hall.

How did you first get into archery?

By going hunting with my dad. Then I started target shooting in 4-H. I wanted to win more than ribbons and was able to do that when I got involved with JOAD.

How did you first get into archery?

A close friend and mentor of mine, who introduced me to bowhunting, encouraged me to compete in the 2012 Oregon State Indoor competition. I was utterly humbled when he fronted the money to buy me a modest indoor bow setup, saying: “Now you have no excuse not practice.” I have greatly enjoyed competing in archery ever since!

Congratulations on winning at Vegas! What did you do to prepare yourself to beat the competition?

I practiced almost every day and would practice on letting down and not being distracted by noise.

What advice would you give to first-time Vegas shooters?

To not worry about your score and focus on your shooting form. Also to not be scared to let down and to not be worried if you shoot a bad arrow just know that you can’t go back in time and shoot that arrow over again. Just put it aside and move on.

If Vegas were a team event, who would you want to have as your shooting partner?

To keep pushing to my dreams and never give up on what I really want.

My answer may seem cliché, but I truly believe that you’re simply shooting against yourself. When you’re on the shooting line, you can’t control how the guy standing on either side of you is going to shoot; all you can control is the arrow nocked to your own string. I am also a firm believer in the power of writing your goals down. Winning this class had been something I had planned for, and practiced accordingly to achieve.

What advice would you give to first-time Vegas shooters?

Las Vegas is a hoppin’’ place, but you have to stay focused on the task at hand! Shoot each arrow one at a time and don’t let the pressure/excitement of the atmosphere negatively affect your performance. When you’re done shooting however, soak it all up because Vegas is truly a cool experience!

Congratulations on winning a National Championship!! How did you celebrate your victory?

My family, coach, and archery friends went out for a celebratory dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory in Louisville.

How did you get started in archery?

My Dad introduced me to archery when I was 12 years old. My parents bought me my first bow, soon after I began shooting in leagues at my local range and state competitions.

What is your best memory of the 2014 archery season?

The feeling of winning my first national tournament is definitely my favorite memory.

Besides archery, what other talents do you have?

I enjoy hunting and fishing with my family as well as four wheeling in the Black Hills.

What are your goals for 2015?

I plan to participate in as many indoor and outdoor local and state tournaments as possible, I also plan to attend the Vegas shoot, Indoor Nationals and the Dakota Classic.

We didn’t actually do much to celebrate; we had to drive home immediately afterwards to get to school on Tuesday. My family, grandparents, aunt and uncle were there with me so we all went out for lunch before we had to leave. It was all kind of a blur. My mom shared it on Facebook, so a lot of people I didn’t know (and still don’t know) have commented on it. She also emailed by teachers with a drawn-out, nail-biting description of the event, so I got a surprise when my name was called over the announcements the next morning, and my Nationals picture was on the board in homeroom (several of my friends didn’t see me at first; I am incredibly short and was standing between two incredibly tall people).

How did you get started in archery?

Hmm… that’s a hard one. I got one of those $30 Bear Brave bows from Bass Pro for Christmas in 2nd grade, but didn’t use it much. NFAA INDOOR TOURNAMENT SHOOTING RULES 1. Two whistle blasts = archers to the line. One whistle blast starts shooting and the clock. Three blasts = retrieve arrows and score. Four or more blasts = Emergency; stop shooting. STOP IMMEDIATELY. 2. You, the archer, are responsible for your equipment to comply with NFAA rules. It is also your responsibility to confirm you are shooting in the correct style and division. If you are registered in the wrong division or style, this must be corrected prior to shooting your second day’s score.

3. All archers will straddle the shooting line. When finished shooting, please step behind the line.

4. When using the NFAA Indoor Five Spot Target: An archer may shoot any of the 5 spots in any order and shoot as many arrows into any one spot as the archer desires, not to exceed the prescribed number of arrows per end. Scoring shall be five points for the combined 4 cm. X-ring and 8 cm. white ring and four points for the combined 12 cm. and 16 cm. blue rings.

5. Prior to each shooting line there will be 2 ends of practice on your assigned target. Scoring begins immediately after the two practice ends, no additional practice ends will be shot.

6. Arrows must be shot within the 4-minute time limit. If an arrow is shot after the whistle blows the highest scoring arrow will not count. If you shoot more than 5 arrows, only the lowest 5 arrows will be scored. Missed arrows are counted as shot arrows.

Additionally, a penalty of one point will be assessed for each arrow shot over the prescribed 5 arrows.

7. There will be a foul line ten (10) feet in front of the shooting line.

If an arrow is dropped, within the ten (10) foot foul line, while the archer is in the act of shooting, another arrow may be shot.

Arrows passing beyond this line, will be considered shot.

8. Witnessed bounce outs and pass through arrows will be re-shot after scoring of the last end of that round, on a target designated by the tournament officials.

9. Maximum arrow diameter allowed is 0.422 inches with point diameter not to exceed 0.425 inches.

10. In the event of equipment failure, please raise your bow to signal an official. You will have 15 minutes to repair or replace equipment. One practice end will be allowed. The archer will be allowed to shoot practice arrows during the 15 minutes of repair time; all arrows missed during the breakdown, will be shot after the final end. Archers are granted only one equipment failure per day.

11. Each group of archers on a target butt will appoint a Target Captain and two score keepers. Arrows touching the scoring line will count for the higher value. The Target Captain shall rule on all questions on his/her target subject to appeal to a line judge. An official will not be able to make a judgment on an arrow(s) value if the target butt, target face, arrow or any part of the arrow has been touched. Judgments made by a line judge will be final.

12. Archers must record X’s and numeric values of each arrow in each scoring box on the scorecard before touching or drawing any arrows from the target. Example: Score X’s X X X 5 5 25 3 X X X X 5 25 4 13. Scorecards must have all totals correct and in the proper place.

Both score keepers and the archer must sign the scorecard. A scorecard submitted with incorrect total(s) may be disqualified.

14. EACH ARCHER MUST TURN IN THEIR OWN SCORECARD WITHIN 30 MINUTES OF THE END OF THEIR ASSIGNED ROUND. TURN IN BOTH SCORECARDS, THE WHITE CARD WILL BE STAMPED BY A TOURNAMENT OFFICIAL AND WILL SERVE AS YOUR RECEIPT. All scorecards must be turned in to

a tournament official within thirty minutes after your shooting line finishes. NO EXCEPTIONS Failure to do so will result in your score not being recorded for that day’s round of competition.

15. Ties for first, second and third place in the Professional Divisions will be determined by shoot off. One practice end; then an end-by-end sudden death shoot off where only the x-ring scores 5 points until the tie is broken. After each end, only those still tied with the highest score will continue in the shoot off. Each archer’s placement in the tournament will be determined by the order in which he/she drops out of the shoot off. If more than one archer drops out of the shoot off in the same end, those archers will be placed based on their total score and X count, including the score and X’s accumulated in the shoot off, then first day score, first day X’s and so on.

16. Ties for first place only, in the amateur Championship (First) Flights will be determined by shoot off. Same shoot off format as above. All other ties will receive duplicate awards.

17. All protests must be in writing and turned in to the Tournament Chairman within one hour after the finish of the shooting line where the protest happened. The protest must be accompanied by $50 cash.

18. No alcoholic beverages may be carried or consumed during shooting hours at the National Tournament. Anyone caught breaking this rule will be immediately disqualified and not be allowed to complete the tournament.

19. Any equipment that impairs the hearing of the competitor will not be allowed on the shooting line. This is a safety issue and will be enforced.

20. Pro Division Dress Code applies to all NFAA Pro Sanctioned Events including the 3-Star Tour Events.

Young Adult Male Freestyle Division - continued BRADEN KLINE If Vegas was a team event, who would you want to have as your shooting partner?

Ben English, also from the State of Oregon, has been a strong influence to my shooting form and I would wager his performance against anyone else’s on the vegas stage.

What other sports or hobbies do you have?

One of my fondest memories of high school was playing football for the Oakland Oakers Football program. We won the 2A State Championship in 2012 and I got to meet all of my closest friends that I still keep today. I played Center on the line my senior year.

What are your future plans?

I’m now attending Oregon State University, where I am pursuing a degree in Forest Management. I am currently shooting unprofessionally, and preparing for Vegas in 2015.

I do plan to pursue a professional career in archery if the financial opportunity ever does present itself.

CMFS Division Family: My dad Dan and my mom Brenda have supported me from the very first shot as well as my big sis Katie and my big brother Jordan How did you first get into archery?

I first got into archery when I saw my dad shoot at a local archery shop and I thought I would try it. This was a while after I had a little Walmart bow at the age of 3. That year for Christmas I asked for a bow and I got a camo Genesis. My dad and I went up to the archery range and I thought I was doing pretty good until I saw the really good shooters at the end of the range. I looked at my dad and asked if I could get one of those bows my dad said “yeah if you stick with it.” So I did and we upgraded equipment as I needed it and that’s what go me here today.

Congratulations on winning at Vegas! What did you do to prepare yourself to beat the competition?

One day of every week I was at my archery club practicing with all the adults at 20 yards it was fun shooting with them cause when I went to Vegas I knew they would be rooting me on, I knew the top kids in the country would be there so I knew I would have to zone them out to get myself mentally prepared.

What advice would you give to first-time Vegas shooters?

For cub shooters, I would recommend you shoot at a longer distance to get used to holding and aiming longer. For everyone else don’t worry, have fun it’s Vegas!

If Vegas was a team event, who would you want to have as your shooting partner?

It’s a tough choice but I wouldn’t want to single anyone out because they’re all great shooters and great friends. And I know, who ever was on my team, we would have a good time.

charlotte harrington bow, a Diamond Infinite Edge, in November as a “happy birthday, merry Christmas” present. I still use it. I then started in cub female freestyle through TFAA and went to state, where I placed 4th. The next season, I was glad to see that Bowhunter Freestyle was finally made a class in youth (I find it rather challenging to compete against scopeshooters with a pin-sight, if you know what I mean.)

What is your best memory of the 2014 archery season?

I guess it was probably state or nationals; very exciting, big tournaments. I shot my best tournament score ever at Texas State, and it was really exciting to win Nationals – it came down to another really good shooter and me, and after 2 days the tournament was literally decided by the very last arrow. I ended up winning on a tie-break. It was also really neat to get a chance to shoot with Rodger Willett, Jr. – I was paired with him for the “Practice with the Pros”. I also remember one particular tournament in College Station, TX at Live Oak Archery; I don’t know why I liked it, but I did. I got my best score at the time there, a 280.

What other sports or hobbies do you have?

Baseball, Soccer, Hunting, fishing, RC (radio control cars)

Besides archery, what other talents do you have? Well…

I’m very good at math, and musically inclined (I play piano, sing, and play euphonium in honors band). I’m in GT classes, and enjoy Quiz Bowl. I’ve got Region Band auditions in a week, so I’m pretty nervous for that, in addition to the start of TFAA tournament season.

What are your future plans?

My future plans are to try to make the Olympics because it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and I want to take advantage of that.

What are your goals for 2015?

I plan to win state and Nationals again; as well as shoot some more 300s (I shot two a few months ago, but my scores have been hovering in the mid-high 290s ever since).

I wanted to take a minute to thank all of our 2014 tournament participants. Every event we held had record numbers in 2014, including an unbelievable growth of over 400 participants at the 2014 Vegas Shoot!

The 2014 3 Star Tour totaled over 4,000 participants from 35+ countries, a 17% increase over 2013. With increased participation comes increased payouts, and we are excited to offer over $275,000 in cash, prizes and scholarships in 2015!

2015 will mark the 15th anniversary of the 3 Star Tour and the 35th anniversary of the NFAA Indoor National Championships. We would like to dedicate the 2015 Indoor National Tournament to former NFAA President Bennie Mooer. Bennie served the NFAA and the archery community for several decades and in multiple positions. He was a driving force in starting the Indoor National tournament. His accomplishments include the NFAA’s highest award, the Compton Medal of Honor. One big change you will notice in 2015 is that the NFAA Foundation has taken over the Vegas Shoot and the First Dakota Classic. The World Archery Festival has handed over the

reigns to the Foundation in order to increase funding for archery scholarships, the NFAA Foundation museum and Youth Archery Academies.

As I talked about the tremendous growth we showed at the 2014 Vegas Shoot, I failed to mention that over 25% of that growth was in the Junior divisions. The youth categories grew from 276 participants in 2013 to 417 in 2014. Easton Field at the NFAA Yankton Archery Center was the spot to be if you wanted to see the top outdoor target archers in the country this fall.

October 4th and 5th, 2014 was the first annual National Outdoor Target Championships. Over 100 archers

were faced with three distances: 60-50-40 yards at a 122cm target on Saturday’s NFAA 900 round. Sunday’s NFAA Classic 600 round included 60 arrows shot at a 92cm target at the same distances, but in reverse order.

The weather for the tournament was a bit challenging as temperatures were in the 40ºs and 50ºs with some gusty winds to contend with.

Jeremy Terhune, from Rozet, Wyoming, emerged as the top archer, earning $2,500 in the Pro Male Freestyle division with a score of 1422 out of a possible 1500. In the Pro Female Freestyle division, Erika Jones, from Grand Island, Nebraska, beat Serena Schluesner, from Roberts, Wisconsin, with a score of 1409 to earn $1,500 and be crowned the top female archer.

Being one of the 100-plus archers standing on the line, a whole new

perspective was given to tournament newbies Noel Kusek and Rachael Byrd. This cold and windy weekend was the first outdoor tournament for 13-year old archer Noel. She has been shooting archery for a year-anda-half, and says this tournament is just for her to get more experience since she has not been practicing for it very long. As a youth archer, Kusek shoots at distances of 50-40-30 yards continued on page 8

for the competition. “It’s more difficult because they switch the distances,” she admits. However, she says being able to practice in the facilities offered at the National Field Archery Association makes her fortunate.

of South Dakota, has been shooting a bow for 3 years as a bowhunter.

She said, “Working at the center has proven to be very exciting and fun, especially watching all of the target archers. Being a part of the NFAA Outdoor Nationals and the IFAA World Field Archery Championships this summer got me more excited about shooting a target bow.” With a little encouragement, she decided to give this tournament a shot. “It was really fun even with cold temps and wind, and I ended up in third place for my division. I really enjoyed meeting other people from around the country and making new friends.”

There were many archers from around the Yankton area that competed in this national tournament, but Grace Ertle, a 17-year-old from

Michigan, drove 13 hours to compete.

Agreeing with her fellow archers, she said, “Overall, I really liked it, but it was definitely a challenge with the wind.” Despite the weather challenge, Grace won a national title for her division. Many other national titles were given out to archers including Gabby Keiser, 14, from Yankton, who took first in the Youth Female Freestyle division. A father-daughter duo also earned top honors: Rachel Wesbrock took first place in the Young Adult Female Bowhunter Freestyle division as did her father, Jason, in the Adult Male Traditional division. Jason, expressing his gratitude toward the NFAA hosting a new tournament, said, “I’m very glad they had it. The NFAA has always showed they’re willing to support shooters with new events like

this.”

Bruce Cull, President of the NFAA, remarked, “I’m very happy with the attendance of this year’s inaugural tournament. This wasn’t our first choice for a date to hold this, but we still had over 100 archers. Next year we will be considering a much earlier AugustSeptember time. We look forward to

this tournament growing to several hundred within a few years.”

The National Outdoor Target Championships marked the end of the outdoor season. Next for the NFAA is the upcoming Vegas Shoot in February and the start of the indoor season.

NFAA to Dedicate 35th Annual Indoor Nationals to

Bennie Mooer

If

you’ve been around the NFAA over the past few decades, you may have heard the name Bennie Mooer. Not only did Bennie serve in nearly every position in the organization, but he was also a major advocate for starting the NFAA Indoor National tournament. Bennie was instrumental in the growth and success of the 5-spot tournament, and without him, the tournament may not have grown to the Indoor Nationals we know today. In return, the NFAA would like to dedicate the 35th Annual Indoor National tournament to the late Bennie Mooer.

As a young man, Bennie worked for an oil company around the Newton, KS area. He played baseball for that company’s industrial league team and enjoyed hunting quail and pheasants and wetting a line when the opportunity arose. His love of archery began in 1963 when a good friend and high school coach introduced him to the sport. He found the sport gave him an opportunity to spend quality time with his family.

Sometime along the way of life, he and his wife Bonnie moved to the Great Bend, KS area. He began his own construction business, and as a side gig, started officiating high school and junior college football and basketball throughout central Kansas. He officiated games for nearly 30 years.

Bennie was elected president of a local archery club, Cheyenne Archers, in 1966, then followed up as Midwest Councilman in 1966, a capacity in which he served for 11 years. He held the position of Vice President of Tournaments for Kansas Archers Association from 1966 to 1968 and KSAA President from 1968 to 1970. After 1970 he slowed his NFAA involvement to just being a councilman and competing for seven years.

During that time, Bennie and Bonnie became involved with polka dancing and belonged to a group that went to dances regularly. Bonnie said she had the frilly dresses and Bennie’s shirts always matched her dresses. They traveled to different towns for the polka dances.

In 1977 Bennie received the NFAA Medal of Merit.

In 1978 he ran for Vice President of the NFAA and was elected. This was a very busy time because the NFAA was working on building a new headquarters in Redlands, CA. Bennie assisted with building permit issues and worked on starting a National Indoor tournament.

In 1980, the NFAA held the first National Indoor Tournament in Omaha, NE. The weekend was a terrible one weather-wise, as a blizzard hit Kansas and Nebraska. Still, approximately 500 brave souls attended. Bennie continued to grow the tournament over the next 16 years as the Indoor National Tournament Planner/Coordinator.

In 1983, Bennie traveled to California several times trying to get the building permit for the new headquarters building. Because of his construction background, he was able to deal with getting the necessary permits, and the building was completed in early 1984 and occupied by the staff.

Bennie was awarded the first Clyde Miller trophy in 1983 for an individual who most resembled the ideals of Mr. Miller in working for and recognizing the everyday archer.

Bennie was elected KSAA President in 1984 and served in that role until 1986.

He also served as NFAA President from 1984 until 1989, and Immediate Past President from 1990 until 1994. Bennie was awarded the first Presidents award in 1993 and the NFAA’s highest honor, the Compton Medal of Honor, on March 26, 1994. He attended 24 Directors meetings in a row and was a Councilman from 1998 until 2002. Bennie continued attending all national tournaments until his health no longer permitted it. After the NFAA bought The Vegas Shoot, Bennie and Bonnie continued attending the event, overseeing the bow storage.

He and Bonnie attended two world tournaments, one in Sweden and one in Scotland, while promoting Field at the World level. He always promoted the NFAA scholarship fund and was a certified instructor.

Bennie continued serving archery at the state level, giving up the state Treasurer position in May of 2011 at his request. He passed away in July 2011 during the week of the National Outdoor in Yankton, SD. KSAA has missed his presence at their shoots and meetings. n

To my fellow professional archers: Please remember, the “chain of command” starts with you. This position of Pro Chair (voted in by you) is representation of the membership, at the other end of the chain. The Pro Chair’s role, amongst other things, is to present agenda items on behalf of the Division, and in doing so, ensure the directors know fully that consensus on the submitted agenda items were reached in a true, democratic fashion.

If anyone is still wondering how this works, here it is: Each section holds Indoor Sectional events. At those events, the Sectional Pro Rep (voted in by you) will hold a pro meeting at which members from the various states within the section can submit proposals. With multiple venues being used for the sectional events, it is understood that having all pros in one place would be near impossible; the professionalarchers. com website forums would be the ideal place for the Sectional Pro Reps to establish communications with their own pro membership. The way the forum is set up, each Sectional Rep could establish a “sectional forum.”

Members will be able to offer up suggestions, discuss proposals and ultimately decide, through a voting process, which proposals are worthy of pursuing to the next level.

This next level is where the Sectional Reps, along with the pro chair and the executive committee will convene a meeting at the Indoor Championships. Proposals from the sections will be tabled, discussed and voted upon. The proposals whose merit has been identified as worthy of pursuing will go back to the Sections for discussion, conceivably at the

various Outdoor Sectional events and/ or the forum. Those proposals which have been ratified by the sections will come back to be tabled at the Pro Executive meeting, held at Outdoor Nationals.

From there, those proposals will once again go back to the membership, seeking their input through a ballot. Successful proposals will be written up as agenda items to be submitted for consideration at the next B.O.D. meeting.

If you are not actively involved in your local or state association, or participate in sectional events, then you very well may not know what is happening within your section.

If you are actively involved and participate in regular events and still don’t hear of anything pertaining to the Pro Division, then I would suggest two things: First, find out who is your State Pro Rep and ask to be kept informed. If your state does not have this position, then petition your state body in an attempt to make this position a reality. Second, find out who your sectional Pro Rep is. This person is accountable to you. If they’re representing you effectively, let them know; if they are not, equally let them know.

Recently, many of you participated in a ballot to determine which, if any, of the submitted proposals would become agenda items for the next B.O.D. meeting. It must be understood that each and every submission was presented through the correct channels. While some may say this isn’t the way that it’s been done before, let me respond to that.

Yes, this is how things were done...a long time ago. By reverting back

to a manageable and accountable structure, we may actually be able to develop into a Division which cares about each and every member, with a focus on betterment for the Division, not just individuals.

Along with the results of the ballot (which can be found on the professionalarchers.com), there are many comments shared about several of the proposals. Thank you to those who took the time to vote on these proposals; you have become an active part of the democratic process. To those who submitted comments, thank you for your insight. Your input is welcomed more than you imagine.

Many of these comments will be taken onboard and discussed in an effort to ascertain their merit and how they might benefit the Division in the future.

With respect to some of the comments, it was evident that some of the writers might not possess a clear understanding of the “rules,” nor their application. It should go without saying that we, as professional archers, owe it to ourselves and each and every member of the association to know the rules and abide by them, irrespective of circumstances. Understandably so, the professional archer is the one others most likely will turn to for advice. The professional archer is also the one under the microscope when it comes to “how the game is played.”

Developing a solid and thorough representation of the entire membership is our goal. Utilizing the existing structure to fulfill this undertaking is a no brainer. Once the wheel is rolling with all the pieces back in place, this Division will be awesome.

Anderson & Pearce: Winners Take All

The 34th Annual Big Sky Open

brought out the best-of-the-best once again as Steve Anderson, of Utah, and Paige Pearce, of California, won the final round above their competitors.

Anderson has been coming to the Big Sky for several years, but it was a first for 19-year-old Pearce. Anderson’s exclamation of “Finally, I’m a winner!” echoed across the range, bounced over I-70 and back through the crowd watching the event.

Henry Bass (UT) from Mathews Pro Staff, was tied with Anderson and Colton Hamilton (UT) for first place on Saturday, which made Sunday’s competition more tense than ever. Pearce, on the other hand, was two points ahead of Easter Brock (UT), while Becky Pearson (AZ) and Seneca Francis (UT) were trying their best to catch up. In the end, Francis moved ahead of Becky to come in third.

big sky open | continued from page 15 10-ring while Bass placed his three in the nines. Once you lose several, it is really hard to catch up. Oh, for the flight of the arrow! Look at this way, Henry...there’s always next year.

A special highlight of the event was watching Tony Clem and son Tanner, of Colorado, compete in the same FS Mens Championship division. Tony won the Big Sky Open in 2000 when we brought the tournament back after a five-year absence. When the competition was ended, little Tanner came running out in the field to his dad. Tony scooped him up and that’s where he remained throughout congratulations, pictures, etc.

Tanner is not so little anymore; he outshot his dad by two points, ending up 12th in the competition. Archery is such a great family sport and it’s impressive to see that “those who shoot together, stick together.”

Here’s a great novelty shoot for all archers who are just starting off! Everything needed to make this Robin Hood arrow can be found at home. The point of the shoot is to aim in the center of this DYI arrow. The ending product is a Robin Hood that does not ruin your actual arrows. This is also good practice that helps beginners become more accurate in their shooting.

What’s Your Most Important Piece of

THINK ABOUT THE TITLE QUESTION. If you do not have the answer, a clue would be that too often it is the least utilized piece of equipment during a competition. We’ll come back to this later, but for now let’s examine what you do in practice compared to your performance in a tournament. To produce well when competing, you need to replicate what you do on the practice field. For many archers, there is a wide range between the scores in those two types of settings. To narrow this gap, examine how you are operating in both situations and identify the differences.

Often it seems much easier to execute good form in practice because it isn’t such a big deal if you miss a shot. You are more relaxed and shoot better overall. Examine your form during practice. Does your bow arm maintain steady pressure at the target and finish in the same place on every shot?

Does the release hand maintain back pressure and finish in an identical position? Do you execute each shot with the same rhythm? Do you let the pin float, trust your form, and shoot a strong shot? Answer each of these questions as you compare your performance in practice to what you do in a tournament.

If the results vary, you have identified areas that need to be addressed.

you increase it in tournaments? Such a change in your focus usually causes a detrimental effect on your performance. During training start giving each shot more value and in competition reduce the importance of each arrow. Then strive to have the value of both shots “meet in the middle” so that your thinking will be the same and your performance can improve.

Reflect on the previous questions that have been posed as you evaluate your shooting program. Why do most archers shoot with less success in competition than in practice? The root cause for this problem is based in their thinking. Do the same thoughts go through your mind during practice as they do in a tournament? In an important event, do you worry about score, try to fine-tune your aiming, or get nervous and see sight movement? You experience these adverse effects because your thinking changes.

How do you correct the problem? You’ll need to program your mind to have the same thoughts in both situations. Shoot from the conscious mind. Program your mind and muscles to work together as a unit by following a simple shot sequence.

A typical series might use these steps: 1) relax your shoulders and release hand when you come to full draw; 2) let the pin float; 3) pull the bow apart and shoot a strong shot. Thinking and following an exact shot sequence will minimize apprehensive thoughts that can erode effective form.

The following are excerpts from Idiot Proof Answers to Archery’s Most Asked Questions by Bernie Pellerite.

From the author: “When I decided to write this second book, I felt that it should be completely different from the first. To determine what most people wanted to hear, we took questions for over a year from the internet and from past seminars and shooter’s schools. Then we selected the top 275 from over 500 questions we had compiled.

In this follow-up book to Idiot Proof Archery, we tried not to duplicate the material covered in the first book. So, most of Idiot Proof Answers is brand new material with new pictures and there is much more technical information in this book than in the first.

The chapters include the following: Equipment, which includes bows, tuning, strings, peep sights, sights, rests, stabilizers, releases and arrows. Also Form, Aiming, Mental, Target Panic, Back Tension, Practice, Tournaments and Hunting. This article is a selection of questions and answers from the Bow Equipment chapter.

When it comes to tuning or shootability, I see no difference between draw length-specific bows and adjustable draw length one-cam bows. However, for efficiency, since the draw length-specific bow was engineered for that specific draw length, then the efficiency level might be one or two points higher than a bow that has an adjustability range over two or three different draw lengths.

The bow that has an adjustable draw length will probably have one of those draw lengths that is slightly more efficient than the others. Finding that may be difficult, maybe even impossible, unless you contact the manufacturer to find out whether a 27 to 29 inch bow is more efficient on the 27 inch, 28 inch or 29 inch setting.

Once you’ve found that though, the adjustable draw length bow at its most efficient setting will be comparable to a draw length-specific bow. This will not make you shoot higher scores; it will just give you the efficiency rating of one or two points higher, i.e., 2 more fps.

Yes, weather affects your sight marks.

For example, if you set your sight marks in 60° weather and you went to Atlanta, GA in August where it’s 104°, you would have to add yardage. In other words, if you judged it for 42 yards, you’ll have to shoot it for around 43 or 44 yards, because the bow limbs are hot and they don’t recover as fast. Conversely, if you take that same bow that was set at 60° and went to Canada where it’s 20°, the limbs are stiffer from the cold, they recover quicker and you would have to subtract yardage. This is all individual, of course, depending on the bow, the poundage, the draw length and the weight of the arrow you are shooting.

Years ago, strings used to stretch out in hot weather causing troubles with sight markings, but today, most strings are pre-stretched, so they are no longer a factor.

What effect does weather (hot or cold) have on your sight setting? In other words, do you add or subtract yards on your sight tape due to weather?

When it comes to bow tuning, shootability, or efficiency, etc., is there an advantage of draw length-specific cams over those with draw length adjustability on one-cam bows, or vice-versa?

It will affect your shot because it is putting added weight on one side that you have to counterbalance with weights to keep the bow level without effort. Without the counterweight, you can expect the bow to torque and it will be harder to level up before shooting. You might try a hip quiver or leg quiver. If you are shooting from a tree stand, you might want to take it off and hang it on a nail where you can still get to the arrows but it won’t interfere with your shot.

If I shoot with a quiver, does it affect my shot?

A hip or leg quiver could solve the counter-weight problem of attaching the quiver to the bow.

I’m done for the season and I need to store my bow. Should I back down my limbs? I’ve heard that if I keep it cranked at 70 pounds it will decrease after time. Is that correct?

There are very few absolutes in archery.

As soon as we made a rule of thumb, a pro will come along and shoot the impossible set-up and break a world record. So, it’s hard to quantify shootability.

It is relative to the person’s ability, not necessarily their draw length. Rule of thumb says that anything shorter than a 7-inch brace height becomes fairly critical. For the average person, that is true.

However, some pros that can repeat form perfectly can shoot 5½ inch brace height bows and shoot unbelievable scores. You just won’t find many of those on the line in Las Vegas or at the Indoor Nationals. So, you’ll find most target bows are going to have brace heights of 8 inches or more, and most 3-D bows will have brace heights of somewhere between 6½ and 7½ inches, for the average shooter.

Is brace height and corresponding “shootability” an absolute, or relative to a person’s draw length?

Having interviewed many pros, especially recently, I can assure you the pros place very little value on accuracy as related to the bow. Most pros will agree that it is 95% mental and the remaining 5% is bow set-up. True, the older deflex risers that had a larger brace height and a longer axle-to-axle were somewhat more forgiving than the newer reflex risers with shorter axle-to-axles and shorter I would like to see a pro’s perspective on how the inherent design of the bow affects real world accuracy, and “forgiveness”, i.e. brace height, axle-to-axle, reflex/ deflex risers, etc.

brace heights. But, with the advent of string stoppers, most of these modern bows have become more forgiving. Most proficient pros can shoot ridiculously high scores with any bow they are ever handed; much more so than the average amateur.

People have thought that for years, but actually the accuracy has nothing to do with the poundage that you choose on your 50-70 pound bow. It only has to do with the efficiency. Because it’s engineered that way from the factory, a bow will have a very slight mechanical advantage at the A bow will have a very slight mechanical advantage at the higher poundage. highest setting – it will shoot possibly 1% to 3% more efficiently at 70 pounds then it would at 50 pounds. This means that if you put five grains per pound in a 70 pound bow, you might get one or two feet per second faster than you would if you took the same bow and shot it at 50 pounds with a five grains per pound arrow. It makes absolutely no difference in accuracy. I won the State championship in Hawaii almost 25 years ago, shooting a 45-70 pound Browning Mirage at 38 pounds. I usually shot at 60 pounds, but I had developed severe tendonitis and couldn’t draw anything heavier than 38 pounds. The limb bolts were sticking so far out I thought I was going to lose the limbs. (By the way, I don’t recommend trying this with today’s bows.) I broke my personal best and shot near the course record.

I have a 50-70# bow. I’ve heard it is more accurate to shoot it at the 70# setting. Is this true?

Absolutely not!

Archers who shoot wheel bows instead of cam bows should shoot in the “valley,” which is usually around one inch wide.

The one reason you should not try to shoot against the wall is, it is almost nonexistent on wheel bows and very difficult to find. Secondly, you have a lot more margin of error if you shoot in the “valley”. However, on a cam bow, especially on a “hard” cam that has a much narrower valley of a half-inch or less, it is much more advantageous to shoot against the stops or the wall, which is easier to find and more consistent.

If your bow doesn’t have draw stops built in, install draw I’ve heard a lot about shooting a bow against the “wall” or against the stops. I shoot fingers and shoot wheels instead of cams. Should I try to shoot against the wall?
