bruce cull greetings fellow archers, We had an excellent turnout for the National Marked 3-D Championship-over 500 participants! Redding once again proved to be an awesome tournament with some incredible scores-Jesse Broadwater shot a record by only missing one arrow for the entire duration of the Tournament!

The 68th annual Outdoor Nationals in Darrington is sure to be another great Tournament. The ranges are in excellent condition and the Club is guaranteeing excellent weather as usual. This will be the first tournament in which the implementing of all the new divisions and styles will be used, so hopefully this will increase our number of shooters. This is also the first tournament in which our new Pro Chairman will assume his new duties. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate and welcome Randall Wellings as the new NFAA Pro Chairman. I would also like to thank Chuck Cooley for his service as past Pro Chairman.

August 6 through 9 we are hosting the first Youth Compound Academy at our headquarters (complex) in South Dakota. This is the first of many of these types of instructional camps that will be run by the Complex coaches and other top level instructors. The youth will be coached and instructed as well as taught different disciplines of shooting Field, Indoor, 3-D etc.. Anyone interested please go to our website or call Headquarters.

I would like to encourage all of our clubs to host both an outdoor and indoor club championship tournament.

This is a great tournament that is very underutilized and is a great way to raise some revenue for the club and offer a club champion in all NFAA recognized styles and divisions. Headquarters has an inventory of these patches that are designed after the National and State Patch and I’m sure everyone would enjoy displaying them.

With the bowhunting season just about to start, I would like to encourage you all to participate in the Art Young Big & Small Game Awards Program also. If you haven’t participated in this before, please go to our website and take a look at all the beautiful patches we have.

This is an excellent Program for both the beginner and the experienced Bowhunter.

The NEW NFAA website will be up and running on September 1. The new website will be home to membership signup; tournament information, registration and results and additional NFAA news. Over the next couple months we will be adding extra features, so check in on our progress at www.nfaausa.com.

The Army National Guard has completed about 70 % of the new Ranges at Headquarters and they have done a fantastic job! You can find more details in this issue of Archery on page 18. This has been an overwhelming Project and will be incredible when completed. The debut of the Ranges will be for the 2014 National Outdoor and the IFAA World Outdoor July 30 through August 8. I would like to say a special thank you to all those volunteered their time and expertise with this project; especially Steve Coleman, Frank and Becky Pearson and Ron Lewon.

The NFAA Foundation Museum has moved to the final stage-we are planning to have the Museum opening and dedication during the 2014 National Outdoor in July 2014.

We are currently inventorying, sorting and preparing the artifacts. If anyone is interesting in assisting, please contact Natalie Vollmer at Headquarters. Along with the unpacking of the museum artifacts, it has become very obvious that the NFAA is in need of an official historian.

Over the past 20 years Paul Davidson had volunteered for this position and did a fantastic job of compiling records, documents and photos.

The NFAA Foundation is also in need of financial support as well as equipment for both the Museum and the Grounds. Dave Gordon, Foundation Board Trustee, will later this year be implementing a Fundraising Program that will hopefully appeal to archery businesses as well as archers. In the meantime, if anyone has an interest in donating equipment or funds please contact Natalie Vollmer or myself at Headquarters.

There have been several issues arise over the last year concerning our Certified Instructor Program, more specifically our agreement with USA Archery and the reciprocity of membership and programs. Currently, I have appointed Dave Hyrn to work on these issues with Chairman Jerry Wentzel. Some of the problems have arisen from requirements placed on USA Archery from the United States Olympic Committee.

These requirements are coming from the issues of safetyin regards to conduct. Brian Sheffler any myself have been working with USA Archery CEO Denise Parker to resolve these issues.

I was dumbstruck

as I watched my first Desert Bighorn Ram. I was on my first scouting trip, on a bright sunny August morning, in the San Gorgonio Mountains of southern California.

I had been applying for years for a “once in a lifetime” California Desert Bighorn Sheep tag with no expectations of ever being drawn.

However, just two weeks earlier, I had been notified by the California Department of Fish and Game (DFG) that my name had been drawn and now here I am, on an uppermost ridge line, just 50 yards from a 150” class ram. By day’s end I had seen a total of six rams on this ridge and one was a shooter.

During subsequent scouting trips walking this same ridge line over and over I learned that this could very well lead to a “once in a lifetime” Ram! In July of 2011, I learned that one of my bowhunting buddies,

Sitting behind my desk at work, I decided to check the DFG web-site to see if I knew any of the lucky applicants who were drawn for the other coveted sheep tags. As I scrolled through I saw what looked like a conformation that I had also been drawn. I knew that was not possible as it would mean that two guys, who were friends and archers had drawn in the same year! So I backed out of the screen and then checked again, and again, and again—yes! I drew a SHEEP TAG for the San Gorgonio Mountains which was only an hour from my home.

The very next day, an outfitter from one of the local sheep guiding services contacted me by phone and provided me with his guide service information. I told him that I was not sure how long it would take me to get a ram but because I was committed to shooting MY

ram with a bow I could not limit myself to the usual ten day hunt that he offered. I could not see his face or body language but I could hear the doubt in his voice when he said, “You are hunting with a BOW? Good luck!” Well believe me, when I am told I can’t do something, most often, that just lights a fire under me and I am more determined than ever to do it! So, he just lit my fire!

After all the required phone calls to my hunting buddies, I had a crew put together that included my son Travis Scott, and friends Jack Hankins, Ed Fanchin, Dave Semple, Bill Payne, Doug Meeks, and Wayne Raupe. They would all help me every chance they would get with the scouting and accompanying me on my actual hunt. All of these guys have been applying for the sheep tags for years, some for as many as 25 years. Even though they had not continued on page 10

drawn they were as excited about me having been drawn as I was.

After several scouting trips I found the ridge line was my number one spot to hunt but I wanted to be sure so we hiked the WHOLE ZONE from the top of the mountain all the way to the desert floor. These scouting trips confirmed that the desert side and the ridge line were going to be the best bet as we always saw sheep there.

The DFG required that all sheep tag recipients attend a mandatory sheep orientation seminar, held in October, prior to being given our actual sheep tags. The DFG presided over the seminar, and the Wild Sheep Foundation, the BLM, the Parks Department and the US Forest Service were there to provide us with information.

A short history lesson was given

by DFG and the Wild Sheep Foundation on how and why we are now able to hunt the Desert Bighorn Sheep that was, until 1986, a “fully protected” animal.

our zones, and how to field judge a legal ram.

During the seminar all of the hunters had to introduce themselves and state their weapon of choice. When it was my turn I introduced myself, then, eyebrows throughout the room raised when I told them that this was an ARCHERY ONLY HUNT for me and I would only be using my bow and arrow. Several of the skeptics in the room asked, “Aren’t you bringing a gun for backup?” “What if you don’t get a sheep and it is the end of the season?” I simply replied, “It is archery only and if I don’t get a ram then I’ll just have to eat my tag.” Again, those that didn’t think it could be done smirked and rolled their eyes as if saying… That’ll be the day!

Glassing that first ram on my first scouting trip did something to me. I got hooked on it and I couldn’t wait to start my hunt.

Two weeks before my zone opened the other zones opened up for hunting and that was killing me! I couldn’t just lay around the house thinking about those lucky guys

so I decided to make one more trip to the desert and hike farther north. As I followed the ridge line north I spotted two big rams. One was an absolute GIANT!! I did a quick estimate and determined the biggest one would score in the upper 180’s or even into the 190’s.

After watching them bed down on a knoll I slowly slid out of the area with a BIG GRIN on my face. Yep, I had really found the place to hunt!

I told my boss about the big ram and he could see the excitement in my eyes. He knew I had been scouting the entire summer and with the season getting ready to start he asked me, “Are you going to be around for the next two months?” To which I smiled and replied, “I’ll let you know after I get my sheep!”

Opening day finally arrived!

There was a slight drizzle, a little wind… and I had my bow in my hand and was hunting for a California Desert Bighorn Ram. Four of my hunting buddies would be helping me on this first day of my long awaited hunt. Bill, Doug, and Dave helped me set up camp in a small draw below my favorite ridge line. We then scaled the slopes to the ridge line where we began glassing and immediately spotted a small ram heading south on the west facing slope of the ridge. I decided to hunt north along the ridge line with Doug to the area where I saw the two large rams two weeks earlier. Dave and Bill were going to follow the small ram south to see where it was going and to do some glassing in that direction. Wayne, my fourth buddy, was located about a mile away in an adjacent drainage where he could glass from the bottom up.

hike to reach the knoll where I had earlier glassed the two rams.

However, about half a mile from the knoll we spotted five smaller rams and one was a shooter. I field judged him to be in the 160 inch class. After about an hour of watching them we started the stalk by dropping down the backside and doing some side hilling. We climbed back to the top of the ridge and as we crested, so did the rams.

We were busted and they in no time put a half mile between us.

By this time it was late in the day, the wind was trying to blow us off the ridge and it was raining harder and coming at us sideways so we started hunting back towards camp. We met up with Dave and Bill on a ridge where they had been glassing. Wayne, meanwhile, had seen a few nice rams glassing from below and tried texting me but due to bad cell service I didn’t get the text until later. Between the five of us we saw 21 sheep that first day.

The next day of my hunt started with a little drizzle but no wind. We left camp and climbed the ridge to a vantage point for glassing. Doug immediately found a herd of seven rams about a mile away, as the crow flies, from our location. One of the rams looked as though it would be in the 170 class. Well, the crow was not flying so that mile turned into three miles as I tried to get there without being seen in all that large open country. But with a huge surge of adrenaline it only took me oneand-a-half hours to make the trek.

When I got to the spot where I was to look back at Doug, to get a status update, he directed me to come over the top because the sheep were side hilling and feeding slowly toward me. As I crested the continued on page 13

Only the good archers can shoot from the awkward foot and body positions encountered on a hilly 3-D range. The combination of difficult target settings and rolling hills has dished out a platter-sized helping of humility to many archers.

At one time, one of my favorite championship tournaments was the third leg of the Triple Crown at Nelsonville, Ohio. Many archers considered this to be among the most difficult competitions; and it was, if you had a weakness. The tournament organizers did not set small targets at long ranges or place the targets where the vegetation restricted your shot. Instead, they used the terrain to offer every type of difficult shot. If you had a weak point they would help you find it. An archer encountered shots ranging from open fields to dark woods, uphill to downhill, lighted areas into darkness and vise versa. There were numerous

side hill shots as well. The archers that ended up on the awards platform were truly all-around good archers. They had mastered the art of shooting the hills.

In order to shoot well on angled terrain, an archer must do four things correctly. The first is to maintain perfect balance. The position of your feet and your body must allow you to stand motionless. The best option is for your weight to be evenly distributed on both feet so one isn’t required to carry the brunt of the load. On sharp uphill and downhill slopes, most archers accomplish this by moving their feet closer together. To have poor balance would be like trying to shoot a moving target, only the pin would be in motion.

The next step is to set and position your shoulders at the same angle to the target as you do when shooting on a level surface. If you create a greater angle between the bow arm and shoulder, more side pressure will be required to align the bow. It will also change your anchor point. Because the draw length will feel too long, you will then have to anchor farther back to maintain back pressure. Also, pay close attention to your foot alignment when addressing the target.

If you place your feet with a more open stance, your shoulders will automatically be lined up in a more open position. When this occurs, the archer usually pulls the shot left.

Third, always make sure that your back is straight so that your weight is shifted on your heels, allowing your shot to be executed the same as when you are shooting on a level surface. A common error is the tendency to bend forward and place more weight on your toes. This inhibits the shoulders from maintaining good back pressure and prevents you from executing the shot with the same degree of explosion as you do when the back is straight.

To prevent another typical error made on the uphill and downhill shots, an archer must bend at the waist to raise or lower the bow arm. Think of your body continued on page 45

hill and scanned the hillside expecting to have the sheep in my lap my heart sank. The rams changed course and were now 240 yards below me still slowly feeding out in the open where I had no chance to make a stalk. All I could do was sit there and admire

getting close to those rams before dark and I didn’t want to hike back to camp in the dark because we had cliffs all around us. Besides, my legs felt like Jell-O as they had not recovered from the first stalk of the day.

We decided to leave and return in the morning.

I drew my bow back, let my pins settle on his ribs and released the bow string.

these majestic animals and study their horns as they fed out of sight. I had just gotten a huge dose of REALITY! I realized this once in a lifetime bow hunt could be very long and very tough both mentally and physically!

It was now 2:00 in the afternoon on Sunday and Bill, Dave and Doug all had to head home so they could get ready for work the next morning. As I was thanking them for their help and saying goodbye, Jack, another of my hunting buddies arrived. It was now just me and Jack. With two and a half hours of daylight left I told Jack we needed to head south to pick up my back pack that I left at the beginning of my first stalk of the day. When we got to the general location of the pack I told Jack to continue on up to a high spot and glass farther south while I dropped off the ridge and down a little cliff to get my pack. When I got back to where Jack was he told me that he had just seen a herd of 15 sheep with three giant rams! So, off we went on another stalk with adrenalin flowing.

But after hiking six miles and glassing every nook and cranny with our spotting scopes we couldn’t find a sheep to save our lives! I started second guessing the situation, panicking, thinking we may have blown all the sheep out of the area with all of our hiking back and forth on the ridge spreading our scent as we went.

By the time we got back to camp it was five o’clock and it was getting dark. We had our Mountain House Meals and then made plans for the next day’s hunt and hit the sack. I didn’t sleep a wink that night! I kept thinking about all the different scenarios that I had played in my head, over and over again, for the last five months. Morning couldn’t come quickly enough!

Daybreak had not arrived yet but we were up and headed south to the area where the three big rams were heading the previous afternoon. At first light I spotted some sheep going around the corner of a ridge toward some cliffs on the far side. I was sure I could make it over the top in time to intercept them. On September 14, 2011, longtime CBH and BGC member Doug Meeks was successful in taking a 262 5/8” Roosevelt’s Elk. While any quality bull elk is worthy of bragging rights, Doug’s elk also landed him a place in history as he became the first bowhunter in North America (and quite possibly the world) to take all three species of California elk with a bow and arrow.

Doug’s journey began on January 1, 2005 when he harvested a Tule Elk measuring 181 5/8”. The Tule Elk is the smallest of the three elk species found in California. It is also a fact that the Tule Elk is found in only one place in North America – California!

On December 28, 2009 Doug took his second leg of his unique trifecta when he arrowed a 316 1/8” American Elk. The American Elk is also known as the Rocky Mountain Elk in other states.

Less than two years later he created history by completing his “Elk Slam” with his Roosevelt’s Elk. Congratulations again to Doug Meeks – the proud owner of the very first California bowhunting Elk Grand Slam!

With an archery resume as tall as the famous Big Foot target in Redding, CA, Reo is one of the most decorated and well-known compound archers in the world. Reo has competed as a professional archer for nearly 20 years.

Reo, son of Dee Wilde, grew up working in their family archery shop from the ages of 12 to 19. Taking a hiatus from competitive archery at 12 to participate in other sports, Reo began competing again at the age of 19. Reo’s first big shoot was the 1993 Vegas Shoot at the Sans Convention Center. He competed in the Adult Freestyle Flights and won the title—quite a feat for a young archer. There was no turning back after his victory. Reo competed in his first professional event later that year, with a little loving push from his father. “My first professional shoot, my dad said he would pay the entry fee if he got to keep my winnings.

I was okay with that as long as I got to keep ‘the big gold bowl.’ I ended up winning that event!” Reo remembers.

ould it be out-of-bounds to call the Wildes the most reputable family in the National Field Archery Association? With Reo Wilde, Logan Wilde, Brenda Wilde (wife to Logan) and Dee Wilde all shooting at the top of their respective divisions, the Wilde bunch are by far the most decorated family currently competing in NFAA tournaments.

The family competes at nearly all-major NFAA shoots, and has for several decades. Dee Wilde, father to Reo and Logan, now shoots in the Senior Pro division and has been an NFAA Pro since the boys were young. Reo and Logan compete against each other in the Men’s Pro Freestyle division. Although the brothers enjoy competing with each other, it sometimes can damper the excitement of a big win.

“It’s hard to compete against your family. When you win you want to be excited about winning but at the same time you’re disappointed your brother had to lose. After a big win, I’ve found myself thinking ‘wow that sucks he just lost’,” comments Reo Wilde.

One huge advantage of shooting as a family is the camaraderie. “We often times call each other up to talk about our setup or upcoming tournaments. It’s always great to have each other in the coaches’ box for a shoot off or final of an event. We also live within 2 hours of each other, so we are able to travel to shoots 16 Archery Magazine

together,” Reo explains.

The boys grew up with Dee Wilde on the road as a professional archer. Reo remembers his father gone many weekends a year competing at national and regional shoots. The sport didn’t pay enough at the time, so the family rarely had the opportunity to travel with Dee. Reo finds himself in a similar situation now as he has his wife, Sheri Wilde, and two little girls at home. Until three years ago; Reo worked full-time at UPS, practiced at night and traveled to shoots on the weekends. He found it very difficult to be away from his family. Reo was fortunate to make the jump to full-time archery is 2010. “I woke up at 3:30am to go to work and came home at 10am. I tried to always have lunch with my wife and then take a quick hour nap. I would run up to the range and shoot from 12 pm to 4 or 5pm and come home to have dinner with my family. There were many nights I would fall asleep on the couch by 7pm. I had to travel a lot of weekends, only to come home and go right back to my day job.

I worked really hard to be good at archery and make time for my family, but like I said, there is only so much time in the day. I am so grateful now, for the opportunity [my sponsors] have given me [to compete full time],” explains Reo on his website ReoWilde. com “It was my focus to put in the time and effort to make this my full-time job. Now I am able to spend a

lot of time with my family during the week because all I have to do is practice and I don’t have to go to work every day.”

An interesting difference with archery, versus other major sports, is the length of competition.

With 2-5 days of competition, rather than 2-5 hours, professional archers must stay focused the entire time.

Often times, this means making the hard decision of leaving their family at home. Reo compares his archery competitions to a day at the office. “It’s hard for me to focus and get down to business at events if my family is there. I want to spend all my time with them; I worry about what they are doing or if they are okay. It’s easier to come to the events alone and really focus on ‘work’ so I can enjoy my downtime with them. If I worked at an office, my family wouldn’t come and sit in my office all day. Archery is my ‘office’; I need to be able to talk to sponsors, work in the booth and visit with fans.” Reo’s wife Sheri once told him, “If we want to go to Vegas and play, we’ll go to Vegas on vacation and play another time.”

The Wilde family is a true testament to sportsmanship, hard work and professionalism. The Wilde philosophy is simple; archery is their passion, success is their motivation and family is their number one priority. n

How can we grow the sport of competitive archery?

“We need to show what is happening at the events. When I won Vegas, I had over 75 text messages congratulating me before I even left the field. Thanks to the live streaming on YouTube, people from all over the country were able to watch the shoot off. There is a huge disconnect with the tournaments and the public. We need more publicity at events to promote the archers, the events and the results.”

How can we get youth more involved in our events?

“Why does a kid play basketball? He wants to be like Michael Jordan. They want the lifestyle and the notoriety of being a professional athlete. We need to create a pro class that will motivate kids to put their focus on archery. We need to spotlight the premier athletes to help push the kids to be their best and to keep them in the sport. We also need additional events to connect the kids with the pro class, events like ‘Practice with the Pros’ at Indoor Nationals.”

National Guard Breaks Ground at NFAA Headquarters

The South Dakota Army National Guard completed their two-week Annual Training at the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Complex.

These summer programs give the National Guard the opportunity to conduct training at various locations to maintain proficiency on the equipment in which they operate. The 153rd Engineering Battalion, 842nd Horizontal Engineering Company; 1st Platoon along with detachments from other SD National Guard Units were designated to travel from Belle Fourche, SD to 800 Archery Lane in partnership with the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Complex and the NFAA Foundation. This Platoon of Soldiers, led by 2nd Lieutenant Seth Uschuk and Sergeant First Class Travis Pokorney will complete the majority of the earth-moving construction during their two-week annual training, June 9 through 23. After this time period, work will be completed throughout the course of the year by various other members of the National Guard until its culmination in June of 2014.

Annual training projects like the one in Yankton, SD provide real world training opportunities for our service members in order to better prepare them for their wartime missions while simultaneously providing support to qualifying non-profit organizations. The SD National Guard will exercise their skills with the construction of three new NFAA field ranges as well as an NFAA outdoor target range (FITA).

The complete project will include machinemade hills and valleys, new roads, a comfort

station and concession stand, archery shooting towers, improvements to the Complex fishing pond, seeding of grass and the planting of several hundred new trees. When finished, the courses will rival some of the top outdoor ranges throughout the country. The NFAA will debut the new ranges when they host the NFAA Outdoor National Championships and the IFAA World Field Championships July 30 to August 8, 2014.

“This is quite a project with some amazing equipment! It’s awesome to see young men and women using their skills and training for their real jobs. What an incredible program, providing help to not only a non-profit national sporting organization but also to the Midwest, South Dakota, Yankton County, and the City of Yankton.

The Project totals $1.12 million dollars and will be completed in phases during the next year. This project will help provide good, wholesome, familyoriented recreation; and economic development.

Archers should be ready for some challenging and fun courses in 2014,” exclaims Bruce Cull, NFAA President.

Life of an NFAA Councilman

In past issues of Archery Magazine, we have had articles on what the job of State Director entails. The next position to explore is the duties and responsibilities of the NFAA Council. A Councilman’s main priority is to serve all of the archers in their section, often times this includes thousands of individual members.

The first step to becoming a Councilman is to become involved in NFAA local, state, regional and national events. A common misconception is that you have to be a Director or state officer before running for a Council position. It is not a necessity, but it may help is gaining state votes. This brings us to the next important step, gaining the confidence of the State Directors in your section. The State Directors are the voting party that decide who will represent them in the Council. It is imperative that they support you. Elections are held every-other year at the Outdoor Sectional tournaments.

If your State Directors elect you, your first official duty will be to attend the NFAA planning meeting at headquarters in Yankton, SD. After a long day of travel, a smiling face from NFAA headquarters and your fellow councilmen will greet you. After an hour van ride, you will arrive in the beautiful town of Yankton. After a grand tour of the facility and a chance to meet the hard working gals that help keep the NFAA running, the President and Vice President will introduce the next three days’ itinerary. The three-day meeting covers everything from tournaments, payouts, dates, rules and regulations. You will be asked to make decisions on National tournaments, The Vegas Shoot and all other aspects of the business. Your decisions will impact the entire organization.

Following the meeting at headquarters, you will begin to plan your Indoor Sectional tournament. My section, the Southwest, competes at 15 different sites over the entire month of January. It is my responsibility to make sure the contracts are drafted and signed and the correct number of targets and scorecards are ordered and at the correct location. Once the competitions are over, all of the scores and scorecards are returned to you. It is your responsibility to compile all of the locations and submit the results to headquarters. Most of the time, the scorecards are hard to read. Archers must have the worst handwriting! It is understandable why there are oftentimes mistakes. You will receive several phone calls to fix these mistakes. Archers are competitive people and they do not like it when they are given 26 Archery Magazine

lower scores than they earned.

Directly following indoor sectionals, it is time to pack for The Vegas Shoot and the Annual Board of Directors Meeting in February. The Board of Directors includes all State Directors, Councilmen, and NFAA officers. They meet for 3 days and move directly into setting up for our biggest tournament of the year, The Vegas Shoot. 10 to 12 hours days are spent on set up.

Unloading tractor-trailers, moving 200 lbs. of target bails, setting up bow racks and target stands, and hanging nets, banners and time clocks; this is not a vacation.

Once the tournament begins, it is time to take care of your customers. We are now responsible for officiating, assisting the office staff, and manning the practice and bow storage booths. After the tournament it is time to tear down. Everything that came in to the building must now be packed up and put away. You only have one night to clear out of the venue, so it’s time to grin and bear it. This may be your latest night yet.

Next stop is the NFAA Indoor Nationals in Louisville. You will arrive to once again unload trailers and set up the targets bails, etc. During the tournament, you are again responsible for officiating, assisting the office staff, and manning the practice and bow storage booths. The best news for Louisville is there is no tear down. The Kentucky NASP uses our setup for their tournament the following day. When Monday comes, it is time to head home and start working on Outdoor Sectionals. Repeat your tasks for Indoor Sectionals, and you are ready to go. Outdoor Sectionals are oftentimes held at only one location, so you will partner with the state director of the hosting club to plan the tournament. During all of this other madness, you will be receiving phone calls from your sectional members informing you of a problem that is ‘near and dear’ to them or a family member. As a good Councilman, you will take the time to help them with their problem or get them to the person that can. Once your second sectional outdoor tournament has arrived, you will have to ask yourself ‘Do I want to do this again?’. I’ll bet you say yes. With all the hard work of being a Councilman, come all of the benefits. Traveling the country and making lifelong friends in the archery community well outweighs the longs days. The NFAA Is always looking for our future leaders, so get involved and consider the future opportunity of becoming an NFAA Councilman.

NATIONAL SENIOR GAMES with Tim Austin, Southeast Councilman

Archers talk about going to the Senior Olympics and some individuals plan on attending their local games, their State games, and then (in odd numbered years) the National Senior Games.

The qualifying procedures and rules of competition for the National Senior Games are approved by the National Games Committee of the National Senior Games Association (NSGA). Medal sports at the games are archery, badminton, basketball, bowling, cycling, golf, horseshoes, pickleball, race walk, racquetball, road race, shuffleboard, softball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track and field, triathalon, and volleyball. Individuals must qualify to attend the NSG by attending a State Senior Games Championship in the preceding year, and they must be at least age 50 at the end of the year preceding the games. Archers qualify by placing first, second, third, or fourth in their age group at the State games, or by meeting the NSGA minimum performance standards at the State games. For the 900 Round, those minimum standards are 425 for Barebow, 600 for Freestyle Limited, and 700 for Freestyle for men and 25 points less for women.

Athletes compete in 5-year age groups: 50-54, 55-59, 60-54 and so forth.

Archery at the National Senior Games entails shooting two 900 rounds, one each day for a total possible points of 1800. The highest score so far at the National Senior games has been 1788, shot by Tom Coblentz from Maryland shooting indoors at Houston, TX in 2011 at age 60-64. CR Northcutt from Oklahoma, age 90-94, earned a Gold Medal shooting 1302 points in 2011.

Archery competition is in five styles: Barebow Recurve, Barebow Compound, Recurve (Olympic Recurve), Compound Fingers, and Compound Release. Recurve archery uses NAA rules and Compound archery uses NFAA rules. Registration is already closed for the 2013 games in Cleveland, OH. 347 archers are registered: 13 Barebow Compound, 64 Barebow Recurve, 102 Recurve, 52 Compound Fingers, and 192 Compound Release.

Professional athletes are not eligible to compete, but a professional athlete is NOT determined by belonging to a Pro Division. The definition of a professional for the NSGA is: “A professional is someone who competes in a sport for money as a primary source of personal revenue.”

Favorite archery memory: It’s hard to limit it to just one, but some of my favorites are winning at state in Barebow and AMFSL in back to back years, winning the Barebow division at the Kansas City Pro AM, and coaching the Holy Rosary NASP archery team to a state championship earlier this spring. Other notable memories were harvesting my largest buck with a bow to date, a 153 in. P&Y. And of course, all the great times with fellow archers at various events.

Advice for other young archers: With all your ups there are downs. Everyone experiences highs and lows when shooting so don’t let it define you. Keep your nose to the grind stone and keep working. Enjoy the victories and learn from the tough times. And in the end, always remember that it’s archery and it’s supposed to be fun!

How do you celebrate an archery victory or new personal best?

It’s not exactly glamorous, but I like to take what I learned in the event and try to integrate it into my everyday shooting. It’s like the quote from Aristotle says, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” In other words I try to learn how I can consistently perform at that level and practice it repeatedly.

from the waist to the shoulders as a “T,” with your arms being the top of the “T.” You must maintain this “T” formation on all shots. If you merely raise or lower your bow arm, your normal draw length will be changed, as well as the anchor point and peep alignment.

Most 3-D archers practice by shooting on a level surface. How many shots of this nature do you find on a 40-target 3-D course? Take a target butt to the rolling hills and rehearse the type of shots that you are going to face on a 3-D course. If you primarily shoot the ASA circuit, I highly rec-

ommend that you do most of your practicing on uphill and downhill shots. Exercise good form and make sure that the following posture elements occur: 1) you have good balance, 2) your shoulders are square to the target, 3) your back is straight and you are not leaning, and 4) you bend at the waist for uphill and downhill shots.

Favorite archery memory: Over the years I have accumulated so many great memories though archery but here is one of my favorites. I was 14 years old competing at a 4-H shoot in Shawano, WI. Youth shooters can team up with adults in a team round in addition to shooting individual rounds. I had just shot a 300 53x for my individual round score. My brother and I were taking a break to eat lunch when my dad comes up to the table and does a victory dance “I beat you! I beat you!” My brother said, “Now watch you’ll shoot a 60x.” So I went to shoot my next round. After words I walked over to my dad, handed him my score card, and enjoyed the looked that crossed over his face as my score registered – I just shot my first 300 60x round. Oh, and yeah—that beat my dad.

Archery accessory or equipment you could not live without: For six years I shot Olympic style recurve and used a homemade finger sling. I got so used to it I still use it when I shoot my compound. (Of course I have to give a shout out to my lucky bunny that’s been on my quiver for 9 years. )

The number of scholarships to be given each year will be determined by the Scholarship Committee, based on funds available and number of qualified nominees.

Advice for other young archers: It’s really easy to get caught up in the competitions, perfecting your form, and tallying your score – archery is a lot of work, but remember why you enjoy shooting. Take some time to just have fun with it.

How can you become eligible for the NFAA Scholarship?

I don’t celebrate a victory or a personal best I just take in the moment to think to myself that next time I am going to do better than I just shot.

How can you apply for the NFAA Scholarship?

If I am selected to receive the NFAA Scholarship, when and how will I receive it?

A confirmation letter to the winner(s) of the NFAA Scholarship will be mailed in April. During August of said year, the NFAA will forward the award in the form of a check to the cashier of the institute of higher education of the recipient’s choice for deposit to the student’s financial account to be used as the student sees fit. If the student decides not to attend an institution of higher learning, the amount will be returned to the NFAA Scholarship Fund.

jerked my boots off and I crept up the hill and eased over the edge looking down on the cliffs. There they were! I could see the backs of sheep as they fed with their heads down. I nocked an arrow and started creeping, on my hands and knees, closer to the edge.

To my disappointment none were rams. I was within 28 yards of nine ewes! I was feeling good about the stalk, but I was frustrated because I had yet to be within bow range of a legal ram, with my bow in hand.

We backtracked to another ridge to do some more glassing. As we topped out Jack started glassing and immediately said, “Look! There are the three Amigos.

They’re about a mile from of us.” We both looked at each other—they were right where we had been hunting the last two days! We knew exactly where we had to go to intercept them. So off we went…again.

We ran around the back side of the mountain and started to climb up towards the ridge line. That’s when we spotted the sheep; they had fed over the top and were now feeding on our side of the ridge. We melted into the side of the hill and watched until the sheep had fed back over the top and were again out of sight.

Climbing as fast as we could we finally reached the knoll where I was sure I they would be. Jack stayed back about 30 yards as I eased around the knoll. I knew I was close so I got on my hands and knees and started crawling slowly toward them. Then I saw the backs of a couple of sheep. I could tell that they were ewes as their coats were light in color compared to the much darker rams. As I sat there contemplating what my next move would be I noticed a ewe about 30 yards from me looking right at me. She was trying to figure out what I was. Then she started walking right toward me, not taking her eyes off me, until she was 10 yards away. Realizing something was not right, her eyes opened really wide, then she spun on a dime and busted out of there taking 25 sheep with her which included three BIG rams. Then Lady Luck stepped in and they all stopped and looked back up to see just what the heck they were running from. I grabbed my rangefinder and ranged the closest ram, he was 57 yards away. I drew my bow back, let my pins settle on his ribs and released the bow string. It seamed like I was watching my arrow fly in slow motion then it disappeared into the ram’s chest. As the band of sheep thundered off downhill, I turned towards Jack and raised my arms to let him know I just shot my ram… but he had seen the whole event unfold and he was as excited as I was. We watched the sheep continue their flight for about 300 yards, until they came to a very

narrow finger ridge where they stopped. I saw my ram wobble a little bit then he laid down and it was over.

The rest of the herd took off and Jack and I started to hoot and holler! I had done it!! I got my Desert Big Horn Ram with my BOW!!!

We descended the steep hillside to my ram and as we approached I couldn’t believe the mass and length of his horns. We knew we had something special but we just didn’t know how special. I had been after a legal, mature ram but this one far exceeded that goal.

I pulled out my cell phone to call my son Travis to tell him what I had just done but I was shaking so bad Jack had to dial it for me! After blurting out that I had a BIG RAM down I asked if he could get off work and help us pack it out? He called back a few minutes later to inform me that he and Jason, another hunting buddy, were on their way and would be there in an hour. They arrived as Jack and I were finishing up on the skinning and quartering. We loaded our packs and headed back to the truck where a few more friends had shown up. My buddy Wayne took pictures of us packing my ram out of the canyon and he also brought a bottle of sparkling apple cider (our faux champagne). We toasted this extremely successful hunt and I thanked everyone for all of their help in making this hunt such a success.

I needed to report my kill to Jeff Villepeno, the DFG Sheep Biologist, so I called him and asked where he would like to meet. Jeff provided us with a meeting place so we all loaded up in our trucks and traveled by caravan to meet Jeff. He gathered all of the required DFG information and then measured and plugged the horns, then he said, “You really got a great sheep, and with a bow!” After calculating all of the measurements Jeff said, “He green scores 180 & 7/8 inches!!! I couldn’t believe it! My ram ranks as the new number one Desert Big Horn Ram ever taken with archery equipment in the state of California!! Additionally, the Green Score places it in the top 2 for the Pope and Young Record Book!!!

I am still on top of the world with this accomplishment, not only did I get my ram, I got him in 3 ½ days on my own and he turns out to be a record! This isn’t only a tag of a lifetime this was a hunt of a lifetime and a trophy of a lifetime!

The official score after the mandatory 60-day drying period was 178 4/8 net with 179 1/8 gross… only 2/8” below the Pope & Young Club world record!!! n scores, tournament info and more at www.nfaausa.com 49

EASTON FOUNDATIONS NATIONAL FIELD ARCHERY ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION JOINT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 1. Deadline for 2013 scholarship applications to be received at the NFAAF Office in Yankton is December 31, 2013. The winners will be announced at the World Archery Festival Vegas Shoot, February 2014.

2. The NFAA Scholarship Committee will review and rank the applications, place each applicant into the appropriate category and present their suggestions to the Joint Scholarship Approval Committee for their approval. The Joint Scholarship Approval Committee, consisting of two Directors of the National Field Archery Association Foundation and two Directors of the Easton Foundations, will make a joint decision on winners and the final amounts for each scholarship.

3. The NFAA National Office will notify all applicants if their application was denied or approved, and the amount of the scholarship. If approved, it will also describe the procedure for the scholarship payment.

4. For all scholarships greater than $500, the recipient will receive an Archery Activity Report form that must be completed and sent to the NFAA National Office twice a year, showing their archery activities during the year.

Applicant Requirements The maximum amount of all scholarships for the first three years will be $50,000 per year. The goal is to provide 50% of the scholarships to recurve archers and 50% to compound archers. A secondary goal will be to split the scholarships equally between men & women.

• Applicants must be a member of the NFAA or the NAA/USA Archery.

• Applicants that are not graduating from high school in the current year (JOAD, NASP, junior high, or high school freshman/sophomore archers) may apply. n For this group, any approved scholarships will be

held by the Foundation until the student notifies the Foundation they are graduating from high school, and the name of the qualified school they plan to attend.

• High school applicants must be applying to be full time students at a two or four year college/university or a technical training college (these are considered qualified schools). n

Applicant must maintain a 2.0 GPA minimum on a 4.0 scale in the current year.

• College applicants must be full time students at either a two or four year college or university.

b. Applicant is attending a college that does not have an archery club program, but the student is shooting competitively on their own. i. If the student starts a new archery club program at their school, this will be a major factor to receive a scholarship the next year. ii. Students that are more successful starting archery clubs will be considered for greater scholarship amounts.

3. If the Applicant has made the current Olympic, PanAm, or Other International Team through the USA Archery selection process: Scholarship amounts will vary between $2,500-5,000 based on the archer’s accomplishments and future competition plans. a. The Joint Scholarship Approval Committee may approve a ‘training grant’ for Olympic, PanAm, or World Team members that have graduated from college, and allow them to use the grant to pay for training, and competition travel expenses without needing to be spent on the archer’s education. (Though this situation is expected to be rare, it will allow top US archers to apply for financial support.)
