The 71st Annual NFAA Outdoor National Field Championships were held July 25-29 in Darrington, WA. Archers enjoyed five days of sunny skies, competing in a 3/5 day format.

Two of the most decorated field shooters of all time battled it out in a 4-arrow shoot off for the Professional Male Freestyle division, with Dave Cousins inching past Jesse Broadwater on the final arrow to take home the 2016 title. Paul Tedford rounded out the podium in third.

Paige Gore continued her Outdoor dominance in the Professional Female Freestyle division, beating second place finisher Jamie Van Natta by 22 points. Heather Gore finished third.

As we return from Outdoor Field Nationals in Darrington, we continue on the last stretch of the outdoor season. The newest of the NFAA Championships, the 3rd Annual Outdoor Target Nationals, will be held on Easton Field at the NFAA Easton Yankton Archery Center September 24-25. We will hold an Adult Compound Academy in conjunction with the tournament, September 23-25. This 3-day academy will cover all facets of archery competition; including tournament prep, training & conditioning, shot cycle, and equipment set up. Participants will receive 1-on-1 tips from top professional archers (Paige Gore, Paul Tedford and Braden Gellenthien) and Level 3 /4 coaches. The 2016 academy will take a closer look at off season training and conditioning and how to effectively prepare for the 2017 indoor season. You can register online at nfaausa.com.

Preparation at headquarters is well underway for the 2017 indoor season with new contracts for The Vegas Shoot and the NFAA Indoor Nationals. my mind before coming I knew I was going to have to shoot good since it really came down to the 15 arrows and I’m typically unlucky when to comes to head-to-head matches.”

These were new phrases for the 2016 First Dakota Classic. Due to tournament growth over the years the First Dakota Classic was modified to fit the growing crowd.

Sarah Lance took second place, Fiona Mcclean took third place, and Holly Larson took fourth place.

“It was exciting for us,” Bruce Cull, NFAA President, said. “I think the bracket tournaments and head-to-head cuts are the future of archery tournaments. It was a good learning experience for our staff and for the archers.”

Another new addition to the First Dakota Classic this year was the $5,000 amateur guarantee in the $10,000 shoot off. All attendees, of the 3 Star Tour, were eligible to shoot off for the $10,000 grand prize. If a professional archer won the $10,000 shoot off, a guaranteed $5,000 prize was awarded for the last amateur standing.

The tournament began with qualification rounds, either on Friday or Saturday, where all archers shot a Classic 600 round. Then, based on the archer’s qualification score, they were either placed into head-to-head brackets, indoors and outdoors.

Going into the head-to-head matches on Sunday, June 12 some archers began shooting at 7 a.m. and others had a bye and shot later. Each division shot three ends of five arrows from 30 yards cub and youth divisions, young adults and adult divisions at 50 yards and Championship divisions at 60 yards.

Throughout the morning the championship male freestyle class cut from forty-seven participants to only four standing. The top four archers left were Jesse Broadwater, Tate Morgan, Alex Wifler, and Braden Gellenthein. Broadwater defeated Morgan after a tie breaking final arrow to advance to the final two and Gellenthein defeated Wifler to advance to shoot against Broadwater.

Broadwater and Gellenthein tied after their three ends and it came down to one arrow. The arrow closest to the center would be the winner. The crowd was silent as the last two arrows hit the target.

Broadwater’s arrow was closer to the center and he walked away the champion.

Professional archer, Rodger Willet Jr., won the $10,000 grand prize and Wade McClanahan took home the first-ever amateur prize.

McClanahan, a 16-year-old from Colome, S.D., not only took home the $5,000 but he took home the young adult championship title as well.

“I knew I had to shoot the best I could, and that’s what I did,” McClanahan said. “It was fun and I enjoyed it a lot.”

“We look forward to improving on this year’s format,” commented Cull. “We are excited to tweak what worked and what didn’t work and really promote this new format. I am excited to see how much we can grow this over the next couple years.”

“It was good to finally win,” Broadwater said. “It was a little different today, we shot all day at 60 yards. If you don’t flow completely and straight through your shot you’re not going to hit the target at 60.”

The championship freestyle women class dwindled from eleven to four top archers. Sarah Lance, Holly Larson, Paige Gore and Fiona Mcclean were left battling for the top prize. With a two-point difference, Paige Gore emerged as the champion.

“This was my first time winning this tournament so it felt great,” Paige Gore said. “It was nice to win with the new format too. In

YOUTH COMPOUND ACADEMY WRAPS UP ITS FOURTH YEAR Yankton, SDThe National Field Archery Association held its fourth annual High Performance Youth Compound Academy June 13-16, 2016.

The diverse group, ages 13-18, included 39 young archers from the United States (including Alaska), Canada and Mexico.

The seven coaches in attendance were George Ryals IV, Paige (Pearce) Gore, Mike Price, Mark Eggers, Josahan (Jos) JamieSantacruz, Bill Hewes, and Jordan Lenards.

The Academy stayed true to its ‘High Performance’ title, with attendees learning and training all four days from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“The first two days were nothing but shooting and working on form. After listening to seminars on shot execution and proper form, the students immediately had time to work with what they had learned,” Coach Jos commented. “The coaches went

around and helped every single one of those archers.”

The coaches were impressed with how open and flexible the students were with trying new things, making the Academy much more effective. Guest Coach Paige Gore agreed that the students came willing to learn.

“It’s so cool because the group of kids really care if they improve or not and they’re eating up everything we’re throwing at them,” Gore said. “We told them ‘if there is something you’re struggling with, you need to come up to us and ask us.’ A lot of the kids came up and asked for help; it was great to see.”

Compound student Caroline McCracken said she appreciated the amount of time the students got to spend with Professional archers Gore and Ryals.

“They gave us really in-depth answers to our questions and they gave us a lot of their time,” McCracken said. “This has been one of the best camps I’ve been to.

I definitely got a lot more out of this camp than any other.”

Guest coach Mike Price said the uniqueness of this camp is the amount of coaches available to help the young archers.

“There are so many things to take away from this academy. There are so many different eyes to help them- from their bow fitting them to helping them process their shot execution,” Price said.

Price’s son, Louis Price, attended the camp in 2014. Louis now competes as a professional archer.

“The camp was instrumental in my son’s push to go pro. The camp helped us pay attention to the small details,” Price said. “This camp

is very detailed, it helped [my son] with his mental game. Something like this doesn’t happen locally, all these different coaches seeing the same thing but in different ways.”

The potential to go pro was a big focus in Gore’s presentation. She spoke to the attendees about how they can advance their archery careers to the professional level while balancing a social life, education, and their archery life.

“I stressed to them the importance of pairing education with competition, and the importance of social media in the industry. Sponsors, company owners, and colleges are always watching,” Gore said.

Attendee Wade McClanahan attended the academy this year for his second time.

“I liked learning more about sponsorships. Also, the group [of students] this year was great. They accepted more information and interacted more,” McClanahan said.

McClanahan also commented that there is always something different to learn at the academy.

“I learned this year that the reason I was having a right tear was my grip.

The bow is shooting fine, but it’s me. It’s the little things that will get noticed and changed,” he said.

McClanahan is one of many up and coming archers that competed in the new Young Adult Championship division at both The Vegas Shoot and the First Dakota Classic. He recently took home the top prize in the division at the First Dakota Classic as well as the amateur check for $5,000 at the 3 Star Shoot Off. The 2016 Academy not only tackled indoor shooting, but also focused on preparation and strategy for

field archery. The archers got the opportunity to shoot on the field courses that will serve as home for the 2017 NFAA Outdoor Nationals.

Ryals and Gore, both experienced field shooters, lent their expertise with several of the groups.

Ethan King was also a second time attendee of the academy, but this year he contributed some of his 3D knowledge. Following a presentation from King, the archers shot the 3D course. King made his way to every group to assist them with their shooting.

Between seminars and shooting, the academy also included workouts.

Dr. Amanda Adamson with Lewis & Clark Physical Therapy came in the morning for strength training exercises. Mark “Coach Rozy” Roozen, strength trainer with Avera Health, did a presentation on injury prevention and treatment, and recovery after competition.

“It has been awesome to see the progression of the Compound Academy each year. We practically have to kick the kids out of the facility at dark each night,” joked Bruce Cull, NFAA President. “They are squeezing every possible ounce of knowledge and experience from the coaches and their peers in these 4 days.

By attending this academy, these kids are showing their commitment to compete at the next level. I know in the near future, we will see several of them competing at the Professional level.”

The National Field Archery Association has chosen Cincinnati, Ohio as the 20172019 location for the Indoor National Championships. The Duke Energy Convention Center lends nearly 200,000 sq. ft of vendor and competition space, plenty of room for future tournament growth. Its downtown location is home to numerous hotels, restaurants and entertainment all within walking distance of the venue.

“The location of the Duke Energy Center could not be more perfect for our event. The NFAA Indoor Nationals brings together the top NFAA archers from around the U.S. to shoot the iconic 5 spot, blue and white face. The tournament, now in its 37th year, was started in 1980 in Omaha, NE with just 500 attendees. It has called several cities home, including Kansas City, Tulsa and Louisville. Thanks to record growth, 1,925 archers competed in 2016 for a chance at a National title. After spending the last 13 years in Louisville, KY; recent construction on the Kentucky International Convention Center forced the NFAA to find a new venue. After an extensive bidding process, the NFAA Council voted to move to Cincinnati.

“We wanted to find a similar location to downtown Louisville,” commented Cull.

“We liked that our participants could park their car and not move it for the rest of the weekend. It was fun to walk through the downtown area and see archers everywhere.

Downtown Cincinnati offers the same experience with even more to do.

“Plus,” Cull exclaimed, “it’s within a couple hours of Louisville. Almost 90% of our attendees drive to this event, so it was important to stay in the same area as the majority of our participants.”

ipping down a steel cable at a fast speed is a thrill for all ages.

A few days before Halloween William Hayes attended a church outing with friends and family where they were zip lining. Several children had gone down the zip line before William, but as he zipped down the steel cable, something went wrong. William fell from the zip line to the ground below him William suffered compression fractures to his upper spine and herniation of lower back from his fall, which left him in a back brace and the use of a cane. Regardless, William wasn’t going to let his injury keep him from his everyday life, and his love for archery and Boy Scouts.

Four months after his injury William began pulling back his bow, though he limited himself to 14 pounds to start. Over the last few months he has been able to practice with very little discomfort. William currently shoots 30 to 35 arrows everyday, and each week he strives to increase the number of arrows.

William competed in his first tournament since his injury on April 16.

It was a 3D tournament and instead of shooting from the youth markers, William shot from the adult markers because he loves a challenge. William walked away with a score of 286 points out of a possible 300.

On May 21 William attended another tournament. Instead of shooting in his youth division, William entered the men’s open class where he came out with second place. William finished with a score of 372 points out of 400. The first place score was 373 points.

William did not let his injury hinder his ability to perform on the archery courses. His love for the sport drove his determination to get better to be where he was before the injury.

William began shooting archery in 2008 once he saw his dad shooting and wanted to try it. As soon as he tried it, William became addicted and was given his first bow. Over the next few years he continuously shot, but it wasn’t until 2012 when William won his first tournament. This win was a defining moment for William.

“He loves the thrill of the shoot,” said Robert Hayes, William’s father. “During tournaments he often encourages his opponents to shoot better.”

After his first win William became more dedicated to the sport and began to practice regularly. He continued to enter tournaments and he continued to come home with a win.

Going from being an active 14-year-old who was constantly doing something to a boy with limited movements was not easy for William. But the thought of being able to pull back his bow pushed him to heal faster.

“Of all the things to miss [because of my injury], I missed shooting the most,” said William.

William’s passion and determination also can be found in his love for being a Boy Scout. Just like archery, his injury put a hindrance on his project to become an Eagle Scout. October 18, 2015, two weeks before he went to the Board to have his Eagle Project approved, William fell off the zip-line. With use of a cane and back brace, William took his project to the review board.

“I can lead the project,” said William.

“I can talk them through how it is done and what order to do it. They can be my hands.”

With the help of volunteers from the Texas Ramp Project William was able to build a handicap ramp for a woman to easily get into and out of her home.

Even after suffering a terrible injury, William never gave up pushing for what he wanted most: to be an Eagle Scout, and to shoot his bow. The successes William had while injured shows a strong possibility for even more greatness in his future. William is a reminder to all archers to just get out and shoot again, no matter what it takes. Just before the State NASP Championship commenced, one of my young students called and expressed, “Terry, I’m really nervous. I’m even shaking.”

My response was, “That’s what thinking the wrong thoughts will do to you. You are worried about score and how well you will place. Shift your thinking to shooting the great form that you always practice.

Relax and run your mental program.”

That’s what the aspiring did as she went on to capture the state championship.

TIPS IN HIS BOOK, ARCHERY: THINK

Dwelling on thoughts such as points and winning can be harmful and increase a sense of apprehension and anxiety. When this happens, uncontrollable nerves take over the shooting performance and poor results will follow. To avoid this pitfall, program your thinking and shot process to work as a unit. Talk yourself through the shot. Work from the conscious mind following a few simple steps of your shot sequence. An example might be to (1) relax and let your aiming point float, (2) keep pressure at the target with the bow arm, and (3) pull the bow apart.

The most important aspect in becoming a good archer is to utilize consistent shot execution. When you think about an upcoming competition, concentrate on what you can control. Forget about beating your competitors, living up to the expectation of others, or coming home with a trophy. Downplay and ignore the excitement and tension you will find in the shooting arena. Instead, confidently place your focus on your shot and the steps involved in maintaining perfect form, just like you experience in practice on a daily basis. Picture yourself remaining calm, so when you step up to the line you’ll enjoy performing at your very best.

Rob Jellison from Michigan is among the most successful NASP archery coaches. A large portion of his time helping students is invested in mentally preparing them for the competitions. In order for such a learning program to prosper, every practice shot at a target or a blank bale needs to be produced in the same manner, consciously focusing on each part of the process. The National Field Archery Association Foundation (NFAAF) has signed an agreement for an additional four years at the South Point Hotel and Arena for the 2017-2020 Vegas Shoot.

DATES: FEBRUARY 10-12, 2017 FEBRUARY 9-11, 2018 FEBRUARY 8-10, 2019 FEBRUARY 7-9, 2020 “The South Point has become an excellent venue for our unique set up. They have been able to accommodate our incredible growth and are providing us even more convention space for 2017-2020,” commented Bruce Cull, The Vegas Shoot President. “They provide a little bit of everything for our wide age range of participants with 11+ restaurants, bowling alley, movie theatre, casino,

salon and spa, the list goes on. We are proud to provide a family friendly environment, just off the Strip.”

2017 will mark the sixth year the South Point Hotel and Casino has hosted the famous Vegas Shoot. The Vegas Shoot, known as the largest and most prestigious indoor archery tournament in the World, has grown from 1,600 archers to over 3,000 archers during its tenure at the South Point. Throughout its 50 year history, The Vegas Shoot has had homes at iconic venues around the city, including the Sahara Hotel, Las Vegas Convention Center, Thunderbird Hotel, Desert Inn, Tropicana, Sands Expo Center and the Riviera.

“We are excited to continue our relationship with archery,” praised Maureen Robinson, Director of Sales at South Point.

The international event attracts novice to Olympic archers from around the Globe and includes 3 intense days of no error competition. The Vegas Shoot offers the World’s largest indoor purse with a 2016 payout of over $350,000 in cash and scholarships. 2017 registration will begin in August 2016 and is open to all levels and ages of archery participants, from beginners to professionals.
