Dear NFA Families and Friends, I am proud to present, on behalf of the Norwood-Fontbonne Academy Parents Association’s Executive Board, Committee Chairs and volunteers, the President’s Report for the 2008-2009 school year. At NFA, a community of over 200 dedicated volunteers donates time, talent, energy and ideas to our many events and undertakings. The Parents Association seeks to bring families together, to welcome new families, to foster camaraderie among parents, and to support the school by sponsoring an array of fundraising activities and programs. Based on enthusiastic participation in over 25 events, our efforts during the 2008-2009 year were fruitful. A new event this year, Market Day, brought an array of vendors, with a diverse collection of wares, to the Fontbonne Commons, much to the delight of the NFA families, staff and friends who attended. The NFA Golf outing was revived as a bi-annual, off-auction year event. 2009 was a building year at a new venue. We look forward to a great outing in 2011! Thank you to the many that made our wide variety of events possible! NFAPA’s “Friend Raising” events and activities included: x NFAPA Liturgies x Aid for Friends x Fall Family Social x NYC Theater Outing x Staff Luncheons and Hospitality

As a result of these activities, the Parents Association was able to donate $34,500.00 to the NFA Development Fund. The Parents Association continued to pursue its objective of achieving greater reliance on the NFA website for everyday communication between the school and NFA families. In addition to the weekly Virtual Communication Folder (VCF), the NFAPA now hosts an online “store” that enables families and friends to prepay admission to NFA events and to purchase NFA merchandise, by accessing the NFA website and completing transactions through PayPal. So many individuals work behind the scenes to ensure the success of the Parents Associations’ endeavors: the executive board and faculty representatives, the volunteer coordinators, and the committees that are responsible for the website, for officer nominations and for NFA community outreach. We are all truly grateful for the dedication and commitment of so many. For the tireless efforts of the NFA Administration, Advisory Board, Development Committee and faculty, who create and maintain the environment that engenders the spiritual, moral and educational growth of our children, the Parents Association is genuinely appreciative. In this year of worldwide economic challenge, we pulled together, celebrating, serving and giving. I look forward to the 20092010 year, anticipating that we’ll once again be overwhelmed by the many ways our community will discover to carry out the vision and mission of NorwoodFontbonne Academy and its community of families. For the Executive Board,

Regina M. Forrence NFAPA President 2008-2009

Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends, Last year our theme asked us to Respect Ɣ Reflect Ɣ Rejoice and this call to action was evident in the Annual Fund. The NFA community took time to respect the rich tradition of faith, excellence and value offered to our students, to reflect on the gift that school is to our families and alumni, and we now rejoice and are thankful for the generosity shown during this year’s Annual Fund. The Development Office is proud to acknowledge the success of the 2008-2009 Annual Fund which raised $144,550 from over 275 donors in support of the mission and vision of Norwood-Fontbonne Academy. Last year was a difficult year for many due to the country’s ailing economy, but the NFA community banded together to support the Fund ~ providing proof that a gift, no matter the size, is important. Our parents committed more than $68,000, while alumni families and friends gave more than $39,000 and many designated their gifts in memory or honor of a loved one, and our alumni donated over $15,000. We are truly grateful for the $6,000 donated by our grandparents, and thank the members of the school’s faculty, staff and Advisory Council for their thoughtful gifts, totaling $5,000. We extend our deepest gratitude to those diligent volunteers who devoted much time and effort. Our Annual Appeal Co-Chairs Jane Doohan and Joe Hall spearheaded a group of more than 21 families who served as class representatives. On behalf of our students and staff, I thank you for your hard work and dedication. It is my honor to recognize the efforts of our Development Committee. The committee’s support of the Young Alumni Reunion Event, Annual Alumni Family Reunion, Annual Fund, Capital Campaign, and our first ever Quizzo night proved again how blessed we are to have such wonderful support and assistance from various NFA constituencies! The committee works toward strengthening our relationship with NFA graduates as we continue to implement our Alumni Ambassador program. We gratefully acknowledge the members of the Parents Association for their continued efforts in support of NFA. Under the direction of the 2008-2009 NFAPA President Regina Forrence, our amazing NFA volunteers worked tirelessly throughout the year on a variety of events and programs to generate $34,500 for the school. The administration and staff of NFA are truly grateful for the part you each played in this momentous effort; this support endorses the daily programs and education of your children. It is my honor to thank all of you on behalf of our students, present and future, who benefit from the Development program. With many thanks,

Stephanie Belzer Director of Development & Alumni Relations

REACHING OUR DREAM PHASE I ~ COMPLETE Fontbonne Campus One of the most important and exciting components of the campaign is the addition of the Commons, a multi-purpose building where the entire campus can be together, a first for the NFA community. The Commons serves as a gathering space, for liturgy, stage productions, gymnasium, and cafeteria with kitchen facilities. Norwood Campus Renovation to the Norwood Campus has created an ideal environment for students to prepare for high school and will maintain the sense that students “move up” as they prepare for graduation. The new high-tech science laboratory has greatly improved the available facilities for modern scientific learning. Renovations completed in Phase I for the Norwood Campus include: Two-story classroom wing which is attached to James Anthony Hall for the seventh and eighth grades High-tech science laboratory Upper levels of James Anthony Hall are renovated for seventh and eighth grade classroom space The “Big House” has been renovated and reconfigured to house enrichment programs including music and art State-of-the-art computer center and library has been developed Seventh and eighth grade students have their own common dining space

PHASE II Fontbonne Campus The Fontbonne Building will be completely renovated and reconfigured in Phase II of this project. First, second and third grade classes and Junior Level Montessori will be relocated to the ground floor; fourth, fifth and sixth grades will move up to the second level; and improved access will be created for all classrooms. Additional improvements planned for this campus include: A new main entrance will be created to ease traffic flow and administrative tasks The Fontbonne library will be expanded into a dedicated space An indoor student waiting area and bus access will be adjusted to alleviate traffic on adjoining streets Norwood Campus The James Anthony Hall building will see the gymnasium enlarged to include more floor space, a larger stage area and storage space

CONTINUING SUPPORT FOR NORWOOD-FONTBONNE Annual Fund Gifts to NFA’s Annual Fund are unrestricted funds which supplement the school’s budget and support a wide range of enhancements. Each year, at the discretion of the administration, funding from the Annual Fund is allocated to the school’s spiritual development efforts, academic and co-curricular offerings, staff development programs, the upkeep and improvement of the physical plant, tuition assistance, and the investment fund. Contributions to the Annual Fund are tax-deductible and may be charged to a donor’s Mastercard or Visa credit card. Capital Campaign This is the first time the Academy family has been asked to support a capital campaign in more than 30 years. The Reaching Our Dream campaign is a multi-phase project. Many naming opportunities are still available and your support is needed to help us fund the vision. Matching Gifts Donors employed by companies with matching gift programs are encouraged to make use of these opportunities when making their contributions to NFA. Personal gifts to the school can be increased by this employee benefit. Gifts of Appreciated Securities Gifts to NFA may be made in the form of appreciated stocks and securities. This type of donation can provide the donor with significant tax advantages. Planned Giving The simplest and most familiar way to make a planned gift is to name NFA as a beneficiary in your will. After providing for heirs, donors may wish to include the school in their estate plans. A personal attorney, accountant, tax advisor, or the NFA Development Office can provide information on how to designate a charitable bequest to Norwood-Fontbonne. Tributes When making a contribution to NFA, donors may honor or memorialize a special person or event. A letter will be sent from the Development Office to the designated individual informing them of your generosity. Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) The State of Pennsylvania created the EITC program as a way to provide the opportunity for businesses to pay their obligated taxes in a most creative way. Authorized businesses in Pennsylvania who are subject to one or more of the following taxes: Corporate Net Income Tax; Capital Stock Franchise Tax, Bank and Trust Company Shares Tax; Title Insurance Companies Shares Tax; Insurance Premiums Tax; Mutual Thrift Institution Tax; or Personal Income Tax of S corporation shareholders or Partnership partners can now re-direct the payment of certain taxes to a scholarship organization.

Please contact the Development Office at 215-247-3811 ext. 207 for more information about these and other ways to support NFA.

A Foundation for Life Norwwood-Fontbonne Academy offers students a strong educational foundation within the framework of living gospel values. Graduates spend as many as eleven years with us before they move on to higher education ~ likely longer than at any other educational institution in their lives.

These formative years may also be their most important educational experience, preparing them for a lifetime by: •

instilling in them the joy of learning and living Gospel values • giving them the confidence to value them selves, their neighbors and the Earth • teaching them to make reflective choices as self-directed individuals
