MISSION STATEMENT Next City is a non-profit media organization dedicated to connecting cities and informing the people working to improve them. We achieve this mission through our series of weekly in-depth articles, Forefront; our daily blog; and events around the country.
VANGUARD Each year, Vanguard gathers a group of the country’s brightest young urban leaders and alumni from past Vanguard classes to discuss the state of the urban renewal movement. Hailing from dozens of cities and representing diverse backgrounds, these community organizers, environmental justice advocates, entrepreneurs, government officials and others share a dedication to improving cities and fostering a network of advocates. After hosting Vanguard conferences in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, and St. Louis, Next City presents this year’s conference in Cleveland, where a host committee of urban leaders has played an integral role in shaping the event.
Next City is grateful to the host committee whose ideas, connections and support have made this event possible. Nelson Beckford As a program officer at The Cleveland Foundation, Nelson reviews proposals across a broad range of program areas and manages the Summer Internship program. Prior to joining the Foundation, he served as assistant director for the Detroit Shoreway Community Development Organization. Hannah Belsito As the Director of Destination Development + Community Affairs for Positively Cleveland, Hannah works with community partners to enhance the Cleveland visitor experience. She serves on the City of Lakewood’s Planning Commission and ideastream’s Community Advisory Board. Evelyn Burnett Evelyn is Vice President of Economic Opportunity at Neighborhood Progress Inc., an intermediary whose mission is to foster communities of choice and opportunity throughout Cleveland. Evelyn also consults with the Admiral Center and sits on the board of several organizations throughout Northeast Ohio.
Justin Glanville Justin is a writer and urban planner based in Cleveland. He is currently working on projects for The Cleveland Foundation and Bike Cleveland, as well as a novel set in the industrial midwest. He is the author of New to Cleveland: A Guide to (Re) Discovering the City, and has worked as a reporter for The Associated Press in New York. Caitlin Johnson Caitlin served as the George Gund Foundation 2011-2013 Fellow and helped craft the Foundation’s response to Ohio’s fracking boom. Previously, she worked as a journalist for ABCNews.com, CBSNews. com, NOW on PBS and ideastream. In May, Caitlin joined the Ohio Organizing Collaborative to manage a campaign to increase citizen engagement around Ohio’s natural gas boom. Dan Moulthrop Dan is the chief executive officer of The City Club of Cleveland, the longest running continuous independent free speech forum in the country. Dan also helped to create The Civic Commons, a nationally recognized project to create a social media environment designed explicitly for productive, civil dialogue.

Greg Peckham Greg is Managing Director of LAND studio, a Clevelandbased nonprofit dedicated to creating places and connecting people through public art, sustainable building and design, collaborative planning, and dynamic programming. As Managing Director, Greg leads LAND studio’s organizational direction and sets its programmatic focus and priorities.
Krissie Wells Krissie is a young, nonprofit professional and unconditional lover of Cleveland, Ohio! Born and raised in small-town cornfields, she experienced city life with wonder and awe – in particular, readilyavailable Indian food. Outside of her day job, Krissie organizes neighborhood residents and works to further bicycling in the City of Cleveland.
Marika Shioiri-Clark Marika is principal of SOSHL Studio, a firm dedicated to creating social impact through design, based in Cleveland. She works closely with the Nike Foundation in Nigeria and Ethiopia, and is also designing and renovating the Striebinger Building in Ohio City. Marika is co-founder of MASS Design Group, an architectural nonprofit designing well-built environments that aid in poverty reduction.
Laura Kushnick Wiegand Laura joined Downtown Cleveland Alliance as the director of development and community relations in 2008. She is most proud of developing and directing the DCA City Advocates Program, a civic education and engagement opportunity for rising leaders in the Downtown Cleveland community. Laura has a background in art and art education and serves on the board of Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio.
Jack Storey Jack is the founder of Saving Cities, an organization dedicated to advancing the Rust Belt region by developing Evolving Community-Driven Media, as well as hosting interactive community events such as the Rust Belt Revival Tour and the One Region, Cast in Steel Lecture Series. Jack is also the producer and director of the award-winning film, “Red, White & Blueprints: A Rust Belt Documentary.” He is an active participant in several local and regional initiatives dedicated to the revitalization of the Rust Belt.

NEXT CITY STAFF Diana Lind Diana joined Next City in 2008 and is the organization’s executive director and editor in chief. Diana was a 2011 Van Alen Institute Fellow and is the author of Brooklyn Modern: Architecture, Interiors & Design. She graduated from Cornell University (B.A., English) and Columbia University (M.F.A., Creative Writing). Her writing has been published in The New York Times, Architectural Record and many other publications and her work with Next City has been profiled in The Philadelphia Inquirer, Monocle and many other media outlets. Ariella Cohen Ariella is executive editor of Next City. Prior to joining the staff of Next City in January of 2012, she co-founded and helped direct the Gulf Coast region’s first and only non-profit urban affairs news outlet, The Lens. In 2010, her reporting for The Lens on the use and abuse of Hurricane Katrina recovery funds won The Press Club of New Orleans’ highest honors for investigative reporting and best overall feature writing. Ariella also held reporting jobs at The Brooklyn Paper, The Philadelphia Independent and contributed to Newsweek, City Limits, Architect magazine and other publications. She is a graduate of Oberlin College (B.A., Creative Writing and Politics). Liz Maillie Liz is Next City’s programming and development manager. Along with creating and implementing the Philadelphia-based event series, Liz coordinates programs in cities across the country, including the annual Vanguard conference. She also supports organizational development through various fundraising efforts. Prior to joining the staff in November 2012, Liz worked for the Cultural Data Project, formerly operated by The Pew Charitable Trusts. Liz is co-founder and board president of Friends of the Rail Park, a nonprofit advocating for the transformation of a threemile historic rail corridor in Philadelphia into a linear park. Emaleigh Doley Emaleigh is audience engagement editor of Next City, where she works on ways to engage readers with the Rockefeller Foundation’s Informal City Dialogues, Next City content, and other initiatives. She is co-organizer of a citizen-driven effort to revitalize one Philadelphia city block (W Rockland Street) through small-scale urban interventions; her civic work has been profiled in The Philadelphia Inquirer, on CNN, and in many other news outlets. She graduated from George Washington University (B.A., English).
Seth Beattie Seth Beattie serves as Community Partnership for Arts and Culture’s Strategic Initiative Director. Seth’s primary duty is overseeing the development and design of Artists in Residence, a two-year pilot program that is exploring artist-based community development in Cleveland. Through the initiative, Seth will be charged with developing a micro-loan and micro-grant program available to artists in Cleveland’s North Shore Collinwood neighborhood and will also be working to serve the needs of artists and community development professionals citywide.
Andrew Kleeman Andrew Kleeman joined Philadelphia’s Energy Coordinating Agency in 2012 as the Director of the Smart Energy Solutions division. With a 30-year career in building sciences, real estate, and energy issues, he leads the SES efforts related to administration of the federally funded EnergyWorks program, the City’s RainCheck program, and various other LEED for Homes, EnergyStar and Home Energy Score projects.
Tamar Shapiro Tamar Shapiro is President and CEO of the Center for Community Progress, the nation’s preeminent organization promoting neighborhood revitalization through the prevention and creative reuse of vacant and abandoned property. Previously she served as Senior Director of Urban and Social Policy at the German Marshall Fund of the United States.
Randy Vines Randy Vines is co-creator of the St. Louis-inspired graphic design company STL-Style, which operates a retail and community space on Cherokee Street in South St. Louis. Featured in the New York Times and Fast Company, STL-Style serves as a platform for civic advocacy, historic preservation and thoughtful urban design.
