Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Family takes Center Stage By Ivette Manners enius isn’t just born, it’s a natural gift that’s cultivated and nurtured by hard work, experience, and encouragement. Such is the case with award-winning composer/lyricist/ actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the hot Broadway play
Hamilton. Miranda, who recently won a Pulitzer Prize in drama for his hip-hop musical about U.S. Founding Father Alexander Hamilton, is also the brilliance behind In The Heights, which won 4 Tonys and a Grammy in 2008. New York Lifestyles Magazine got some exclusive airtime with the multi-faceted talent, who’s at the top of his game, and his family who helped him get there.

The hard work, experience, and encouragement that helped inspire Miranda’s genius started at home. He learned the importance of the family bond from his Puerto Rican-born parents who are fully committed to each other and their children. For Miranda, family comes first and is a big part of who he is as a person and a success. In fact, he was on his way home from his 11-year-old nephew’s birthday party with his wife Vanessa and their 17-month-old son Sebastian when we caught up with him for our interview. “We are a tribe,” says Miranda’s father, Luis. “Tribes enjoy each other’s company together, suffer together, and travel together. They get into each other’s business and give opinions when they shouldn’t. That’s all part of being a family.” Miranda doesn’t talk about his success without mentioning his parents, Luis and Luz, or sister, Luz Miranda-Crespo; who have helped shape the star he is. The star that was evident from a young age. While growing up, Miranda’s home was always full of music— from the Spanish songs played at family parties to Broadway show tunes he sang in the car with his parents to hip-hop that his sister listened to in her room. “My sister gets a lion’s share of the credit for any cool musical taste that I have,” says Miranda. “All of my first hip-hop albums were stolen from her collection. She’s older than me, so she had all the albums before I did, like Black Sheep’s A

Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing.” During his stage debut at his kindergarten talent show, the then six-year-old Miranda lip-synched to “Land of Confusion” by Genesis with the help of his sister. “I remember Luz writing out the words for me, so that I could memorize them and she gave me the Benetton sweater that I wore.” Luz interjects with a laugh, “Yes, I think I dressed you up!” “Being on stage was sort of what he did,” says Luis. “The arts have been his passion throughout his life—whether it was film, animation, theater, or music.” As a teen, music became a part of his social circle. “It was everything,” says Miranda. “I had friends that I wrote hip-hop with and I had a Doo-Wop group. Making music and movies with my friends were my big pastimes. In college, I was always trying to act and write in equal measure.” While attending Wesleyan University, Miranda would spend time writing his own work (some of which ended up being the beginnings of In the Heights) while auditioning for other people’s plays. “For me, creating and acting has always been two sides of the same coin,” says Miranda. “I think that being a writer helps me be a better actor because I’m thinking a lot about what the writer had in mind for the character. And in turn, I think the better actor you are, the better you are at writing characters.”
Miranda’s ambitious drive comes from his equally overachieving parents. His father first came to the United States at the age of 18 to attend graduate school at New York University. “He was the youngest student ever accepted into their clinical psychology program,” says Luz, Miranda’s mother who met Luis while attending the same graduate program. “My wife brags about me every now and then,” says Luis teasingly. “It’s very nice.” After graduation, Luis realized he didn’t want to go the route of a clinical psychologist; he had other plans in mind. “My wife has been happy in clinical psychology for a very long time now, but that was too deep for me,” says Luis. “After graduation, I spent a decade doing different things, mostly in government and non-profit.” This included a job working for Mayor Ed Koch in the 80s when he founded the Hispanic Federation. He then went on to start his own company to pursue his passion for politics. “But before I was able to start my own company, my wife and I worked really hard to raise our two little kids. We wanted to be sure we could provide for them and put them through college. Once that happened, I knew I could then go out and pursue my passion.” “I come from a family of really hard workers,” says Miranda. “My parents worked the entire time we were growing up. That was sort of the ethic we had. When Luz and I were in high school, we were
the odd little worker bees. It was always about getting something done, even if for me that was writing songs with my friends. I think my parents inspired that in us at a very extreme degree. Even when we’re having fun we have to feel productive.” Miranda’s sister Luz also inherited the boss gene. After earning her MBA at NYU, she is now CFO of the family’s companies, which includes Miranda’s 5000 Broadway Productions.

Miranda’s parents not only encouraged his career by sending him to the best schools, they were also there to offer anything he needed to reach his dreams. “At the end of the day, our job was to support our son’s passion,” says Luis. “As parents, you help in both big and small ways. When he talks about fundraising for In the Heights, he remembers our allowing him to raid our refrigerator, so that he didn’t have to buy food and letting him empty his mom’s closet, so that he could have a garage sale.” Miranda’s mom likes to give all the credit to her husband’s guidance as a huge part of her son’s success. “I think Luis has been the bedrock of how things moved forward for Lin-Manuel since the days of In The Heights,” says Luz modestly. “I’m not a critic. As far as I’m concerned, everything that my son does is amazing. His dad, on the other hand, can be a great critic. Our

main concern was: Would what Lin-Manuel wanted to do be viable? Before Hamilton, a hip-hop musical about the Founding Fathers with a cast of colors was not imaginable. It could have gone either way, but it’s been amazingly well received. I think the timing has something to do with it.” And indeed, America was ready for it. Miranda’s sense of community, his Latino background, and political opinions are very prominent in his work; but his messages transcend the stage. In a New York Times Op-Ed column this past March, Miranda speaks out about the current financial struggles in Puerto Rico, and similar to what Alexander Hamilton historically did in 1772 for his countrymen in St. Croix, Miranda made a plea for help for his fellow Puerto Ricans on the island.
But Miranda is not all talk. He is a man of action, and his father is all in with him to make a change. Luis worked hard to secure resources for the newly launched Hamilton Education Program. The program was born from a partnership between the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History (a non-profit dedicated to the improvement of history education in grades K-12), The Rockefeller Foundation, and the producers of Hamilton—brought together by Luis. “Patrick Brennan, a friend of mine who is chief of staff at The Rockefeller Foundation, had seen Hamilton and was amazed at its historical value and educational potential,” says Luis. “We sat down and talked about working on a project together and he presented the idea to the president of the Foundation.” While Luis helped make the connection with The Rockefeller Foundation for funding for the program, the producers of Hamilton had been talking to the Gilder Lehrman Institute about brining in the educational curriculum. It was the perfect collaboration, and last month all of their efforts paid off. The program kicked off on April 12, and it brought 1,200 students from 12 low-income high schools around the New York City boroughs to Broadway.
essay, students participate in the program by composing an original song, poem, or dramatic scene based on a historical character or event they learn about through Gilder Lehrman’s curriculum. Then they perform their pieces in their school and the best students are chosen to perform live in the theater on the day they come to see Hamilton. “Lin-Manuel personally greets the students and the performances are introduced by actor Christopher Jackson, who plays George Washington in Hamilton. After their performances and seeing the play, the students get a chance to have a Q&A with the cast,” says Basker. “These are some of the brightest kids you’ll ever meet.” The Hamilton cast has been very active in the program, which will continue with a May 11 performance and extend throughout the year and across the country. “Our goal is to make this available to every school in America. Every kid should be involved in this program,” says Basker. “And we’re so thankful for Miranda for his involvement and dedication. He’s a genius. He’s the Shakespeare of our time.” No doubt. •

here has been discussion among style experts—the fashion calendar is broken. The fluctuating state of fashion itself, including designer burnout and consumer fatigue, makes it clear how confusing and chaotic the creative industry has become. Some critics have even hinted that there is a disconnect between 20 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2016
creativity and commerce at the heart of fashion. Now, original style has a quick paced commercial perspective. Daniel Marks, director of the public relations agency The Communications Store has argued that there needs to be an alliance between the commercial and creative. “The key to a successful brand is the balance between creativity and commerce, and a team who works together towards the same goals with mutual respect,” Marks says. “When you get the right CEO, that’s when success happens.”
Designer burnout will eventually lead to an industry where “fast fashion” will take over, and inspiration and quality will become secondary. Technology has had a powerful impact on fashion and how people are now moving faster onto the “next thing” or “new trend”, versus the tradition and precision of fashion design. Technology speed and exposure, along with large conglomerates demanding numbers leave designers struggling to stay afloat.
Fashion has become a “beast” that needs to be fed quickly with a volume of creative ideas. Currently, the fashion industry expects designers to produce as many as six collections a year, in addition to attending events and press viewings, as well as have a significant social media presence. Is it a surprise that designers are too tired to create anymore? Is designer burnout a real thing? Is this the reason these creative minds are exiting luxury brands? Recently designers such as Alexander Wang, Raf Simons, and Donna Karan left their respective luxury brands (Balenciaga, Dior, Donna Karan International) in an attempt to preserve a work-life balance, and focus on their own namesake labels, or as in Ms. Karan’s case, to focus on her Urban Zen company and foundation. Within the last 20 years, we have seen designers take the role of creative directors to give their labels new identities while still working on and maintaining their personal collections. Fashion’s current business model and expectations of designers are apparently impractical and unsustainable.
Traditionally, editors and buyers attended fashion shows and selected items for their magazines and stores. Those selections would become available to consumers from four to six months later. However, this has now changed drastically as a result of technology and social media. Consumers have access to images of collections simultaneously to editors and buyers, as well as access to some of these items immediately after they’re shown on the runway. This instant gratification leads to other issues including seasonal confusion, and as a result, consumers experience product fatigue by the time the actual collection hits the stores. This dilemma was researched by The Boston Consulting Group, who interviewed a mix of designers, fashion execs, retailers, editors, show producers, casting agents, and bloggers. Interviews revealed that now is the time for a change in the industry. The issue of seasonal relevancy was clearly conveyed, with those designers working to keep up with current demand experiencing major burnout and the subject of fashion fatigue for the consumer where fashion looks old by the time it reaches the store. Yes, it is a new fashion line that feels old to the consumer. Finally creating a sustainable business is tough when items are being made faster than they are purchased, leaving businesses with a loss when clothes are marked down by the time they are seasonally relevant. The pace of fashion collections is so accelerated that brands are forgetting what the consumer wants to wear, and when they want to wear it. Seasonal dressing seems to be blended from one season into the next. dirondack Park and its mountains cover just under 10,000 square miles—nearly filling the northeastern section of New York State, from close to the Canadian border to as far south as the town of Glens Falls. In spring, visitors come to hike and birdwatch; in summer, families enjoy the lakes, mountains, forests, fishing, golfing, and whitewater rafting. Well over 100 years old, the park offers almost unlimited opportunities for outdoor activity. It encompasses endless mountain trails, a section of the Hudson River, more than 125
canoe routes, campsites, and several famous lakes—Saranac Lake, Lake Champlain, and Lake Placid, known as the “Queen of American Lakes”. Just 205 miles from New York City, Lake George Village is the most populated in the area. It sits on a 32-mile jewel of a lake ringed by mountains and dotted with dozens of state-owned islands. And although commercial ventures have sprouted up here and there, Mother Nature still reigns supreme in the region. 1. THE BEACHES Lake George’s beaches offer just the right spot to relax in the sun in addition to picturesque views of the surrounding Adirondack Mountains. You’ll find restrooms, showers, a volleyball area, snack stands, and picnic areas complete with grills. And the calm waters here make swimming ideal for kids of all ages. After a day worshipping the sun, take a ride on one of the lake’s historic steamboats. The most famous of them all, the Minne-Ha-Ha, is one of the last steam paddle wheelers in the country. Don’t miss the fireworks display from July 4th through August in nearby Lake George Village. 2. THE CAMPING Summer is tuning in with nature, and there’s no better way to do just that than by camping. With more than 380 shoreline campsites available on the 44 islands of Lake George, campers come back year after year to enjoy the crystal clear waters

The festival is near Lake George in beautiful downtown Glens Falls City Park. THE HOPPY TRAILS BREW BUS No need to pick and choose among the brewers, distilleries, and wineries in the Adirondack region; the Hoppy Trails Brew Bus offers allinclusive tour so you can see it all. You’ll experience the crafting process and samplings along with plenty of snacks to soak up the suds along the way. 5. THE OUTLET MALL SHOPPING The Lake George Area features 57 factory outlet centers offering 20 to 70 percent off retail prices. Shoppers will find name brand clothing, accessories, footwear, housewares, and lots more. The Factory Outlets of Lake George are located just off I-87. 6. THE SAGAMORE RESORT Located on a 72-acre island in Lake George, The Sagamore is a step back in time. The resort

In addition to displays of antiques and period furniture, educational programs are also part of the programs. 9. HORSE RACING For the sheer beauty and exhilaration of thoroughbred racing, head to nearby Saratoga Racetrack. For well over a century, some of the most thrilling races in history have been won here. Legendary races—like the upset of 1919 when Man o’ War, the superstar horse, was defeated—are what make Saratoga like no other track in the country. Come early in the day and enjoy breakfast at the track, watching these gorgeous creatures do their practice runs. The track is open for six weeks from July 22 to September 5. The festive spirit spreads throughout the region with music filling the air and showy hats are once again in fashion.

This luxury building defines the improvements that are helping Brooklyn become an important center in the world. The penthouses are still under construction, but I can tell you this. These are going to be some of the most spectacular apartments in all of Manhattan. From Classroom to Boardroom

t’s safe to say that most kids enjoy cookies, but 11-year-old Cory Nieves, Mr. Cory as he prefers to be called, has taken that love of confectionary treats and turned it into a business that’s garnered national acclaim. How, you may ask? When Cory was five years-old he asked his mother Lisa Howard, who now works for Mr. Cory’s Cookies as the company’s Chief Operating Officer, why he had to take the bus to school each day. When Lisa told him it was because she couldn’t afford a car, that sparked an entrepreneurial fire inside little Cory that’s resulted in his being a guest on The Ellen DeGeneres Show (which ended up giving his mother a car), a contestant on FOX 5’s MasterChef Junior, and landed him in the Cake Boss, Buddy Valestro’s, bakery where he currently runs his cookie operation while seeking a permanent location of his own.
Before all the attention, however, he and his mom initially began selling hot cocoa, as well as lemonade and cookies outside of a friend’s business on the weekends, and later in front of their apartment building. Word spread quickly about the well-spoken and fashion-forward little boy and his delicious treats. After selling multiple items for a while, Mr. Cory realized that cookies were by far the best sellers, and he decided to focus exclusively on them. After hundreds of batches and taste tests, he finally came up with the perfect chocolate chip recipe, and most recently even created a sugar-free oatmeal raisin cookie for his health-conscious clients. His cookies are made with all-natural and mostly organic ingredients, but most importantly “with love”. New York Lifestyles Magazine had the pleasure of speaking with Mr. Cory, who by the way is quite possibly the most eloquent 11 yearold on the planet, and his mom Lisa about how a dream six years ago has today become the reality of a successful business. Mr. Cory, give us a little background on the business, how did you start and what was your inspiration? I started doing this so that I could save enough money to buy my mom a car, and also so that I could start saving money for college. My mom is my role model and my inspiration. She always told me to never give up, keep your eye on the dream, and dream impossible things before you wake up in the morning—and that’s what I do. Lisa, tell us what it’s like to not only be your son’s inspiration, but business partner? I never thought my son would look up to me like he does, it’s an amazing thing. Kids tend to look up to celebrities and famous people and forget about their parents. What I will say is 52 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2016
that I never imagined that I would be working for my son, but he manages it very well. We started doing this together on the weekends when he was five years old, and the best part about being in business together is the bond that we have. Most parents are out there working and don’t have time be with their children as much, but now we are together all the time. Mr. Cory, let’s fast forward a little bit and talk about the experience of being on MasterChef Junior? It was a little crazy, but a lot of fun. I learned all kinds of new techniques and got to use a lot of equipment for the first time, some of which I’d never even heard of. Chef Ramsey taught me not to mess up my food or else it’s not going to be good.

and me are close. I think you should dress the way you want people to treat you, and that’s why I’ve always had a thing for fashion. What’s in store for the future? A cookbook, perhaps a clothing line? That’s G-14 Classified information! What I can tell you, is that we are working very hard and taking it one step at a time to be able to deliver our cookies nationwide, and we’re spreading love. Historic Campbell Castle
ne of the few remaining historical turn of the century mansions in Wichita, Kansas, Campbell Castle was designed and built by wellknown architect Alfred Gould of Boston. Facial Essential at Dermalogica Spa

ife moves fast in New York City, and it’s easy to forget about the little things that make a big difference. Facials can easily fit into that category. When it comes to our skin, most of us have a routine; and a facial is often that little something more that may fall by the wayside. But nothing ventured, nothing gained. Making the extra effort can leave your skin so amazingly changed that you’ll wonder what took you so long. I’d always heard about the Dermalogica beauty brand and spa, but never tried its products or services; and was excited to finally give them a try. I walked into their brightly lit Soho location and instantly felt that I’d leave with my skin refreshed. I tried the new 60 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2016
“IonActive Facial.” Initially I had lots of questions: What exactly is an ion? Why is it active? How long will this take? And will it leave my skin red or sensitive? My skin therapist was soft spoken and knowledgeable. She assured me that my face would rejoice after the 45-minute treatment. Well, who can’t use a little more joy in their life? It was described as an action-packed treatment, which I thought sounded a little like a movie, but I was game for being pampered. The process began with face mapping, a specific analysis of my skin to determine exactly what I needed. The skin therapist carefully looked at my face with a special light. “Beautiful skin,” she exclaimed. “But a little dehydrated.” She told me my facial would include lots of moisture; then handed me information to read about it.
It said: “The IonActive facial combines thermal activity with the latest treatment room technology to optimize product penetration for rapid results.” I removed my jewelry, covered my fresh blowout with a plastic cap, and relaxed to the sound of crashing waves. The facial was soothing and included several steps. The most memorable was a cream applied with gentle massage, followed by 15 minutes under a blue light. Using light therapy in skincare is fairly common and can help a variety of conditions. Blue light can help banish acne, erase sun damage, and is even used to zap precancerous skin cells. I was given goggles to protect my eyes under the intense light. I thought I’d be a little uncomfortable, but I was wrong. In fact, I was so relaxed I almost dozed off. When my facial was over, my skin was baby soft and glowing. There was no redness, just a pretty sheen. The follow up included a diagram of a face highlighting my “areas of concern.” It also included Dermalogica product recommendations, but there was no hard sell encouraging me to buy them (which was nice). Here’s what was suggested for me. For proper exfoliation, the Multi-vitamin Thermafoliant ($56). Skin experts agree, no matter what products you put on your face, they’re going to be more effective when you exfoliate first and remove dead skin cells. This is described as a skin polisher that uses physical and chemical exfoliants to refine the skin. Also recommended for my skin was the Antioxidant HydraMist ($42); a peptide toner that creates a hydrating shield. I love that this product can be used under or over makeup. Finally, the Skin Hydrating Booster ($56)—called a ‘must-have’ addition to any skin care routine—which includes algae extract and Hyalauronic acid was suggested. Hyalauronic acid is a rock star in the skincare world. Its magic lies in its ability to retain moisture. One gram of Hyalauronic acid is able to hold up to six liters of water. The reviews of the Hydrating Booster seem to suggest that it’s as amazing as it sounds. One person raved, “I love it, my skin is hydrated, but not oily.” Another commented, “It has completely changed my skin’s texture for the better.” For anyone looking to pamper their skin, here’s a breakdown of a few of Dermalogica’s services. I got The IonActive facial, which costs $150, or $375 for a series of three. That means you buy two and get the third for half off. According to Dermalogica, it’s their most talked about new treatment, and I can see why. I didn’t think it was possible to see such a visible difference in my skin in 45 minutes, but now I’m a new disciple. Dermalogica’s most popular service is their signature, customized 60-minute facial ($120). It includes professional double cleansing, exfoliation, high frequency (or Galvanic) modalities, extractions, masque, toner, and skin protection. No time? No problem. If all you’ve got is a New York minute, a MicroZone treatment may be more up your alley. It’s
the power nap of facials. For $45, it targets your top skin concern in just 20 minutes. Another popular treatment is the BioActive Peel. It takes 45-60 minutes and costs $150. It’s a high-intensity professional chemical peel that you design with a Dermalogica skin therapist. It promises big results with minimal recovery time. Dermalogica’s approach to skincare isn’t one size fits all. The company’s story began back in 1986. Jane Wurwand a UKtrained skin therapist new to the U.S. was surprised by the lack of continuing skin and body therapy education. Wurwand put her knowledge into action, opening a small classroom in Marina Del Rey, California. She called it the International Dermal Institute (IDI). Today, there are 37 locations worldwide. While teaching at IDI, Wurwand realized she couldn’t find a product line that addressed skin health as opposed to beauty, so she created one. And in 1986 Dermalogica was born. 5 Food Trends to Jump on this Season By Kristen Carlucci, RD imilar to fashion, every season a new crop of elite food and health trends begin to emerge. Some are fads that won’t stick around, while others are here to stay. Don’t waste time trying to figure out what foods to try and what to pass. We’ve done the work for you and compiled a list of the top five trends that will keep you looking younger, healthier, leaner, and more energized this season and all year long. 1. Drinkable Beauty. Forget face masks and Botox to look years younger, the new trend is ingesting your skincare regimen. The celebrity nutrient being focused on is collagen, one of the richest proteins in the body and in charge of keeping our skin tight and smooth and hair strong and shiny. As we age, our body’s natural ability to produce collagen slows down, plus factors such as stress, sleep, and diet can interrupt this essential function. One study by the University of Kiel in Germany found that a group taking supplemental collagen had significantly higher 68 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2016
content of procollagen type I (65%) and elastin (18%) than the placebo volunteers after just eight weeks proving that beauty does works from the inside out. Trend How-To: Add a scoop of collagen powder to your smoothies, morning coffee, or oatmeal. Or make your own homemade, collagen-rich drinkable broth by simmering 3-4lbs chicken or beef bones in 16 cups of water and 2 Tbsp of apple cider vinegar in a pot or slow cooker for 10 hours. Strain into a glass and skim the fat off the top before drinking. Don’t forget to incorporate collagen-boasting foods, such as salmon, dark leafy greens, berries, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and berries into your diet. 2. Fermented foods. Our intestinal health is interconnected with so many other functions in our body, including digestion, hormonal balance, immunity, nervous system, mood, and skin. Eating fermented foods—whole foods combined with salt or other natural microorganisms that change its composition—help keep our intestines healthy by helping our bodies digest and absorb
nutrients better, increase the number of digestive enzymes, and rebuild a healthy gut environment. Trend How-To: Incorporate fermented foods gradually into your diet with sauerkraut, pickled vegetables, kimchi, miso, tempeh, kombucha, cottage cheese, and yogurt (look for yogurts that list “active cultures”). You can make your own sauerkraut at home by combining cabbage, salt, and caraway seeds in a mason jar and letting it ferment for three to ten days. 3. Grass-fed meats: While most health organizations tell us to limit our intake of red meat, popular diets such as Paleo and Whole30 say it’s okay as long as it is the highest quality available. Enter Grassfed meats. Animals who are fed a diet of grass, not grains, have a noticeable surge of anti-inflammatory Omega-3 fatty acids as compared to conventional meats and a much lower level of the inflammatory Omega-6’s. Grass-fed animals are also raised antibiotic and hormone-free and contain more vitamins A, B, and E, calcium, magnesium, and potassium than their grain-fed counterparts. An extra bonus: when you purchase this kind of meat, you are usually buying from smaller farms and supporting local agriculture. Trend How-To: If you do eat red meat in your diet, always try to buy grass-fed beef, lamb, or bison and keep your portion to 4-6oz. Grill up a grass-fed bison burger with avocado, red onion, lettuce, and tomato on a whole grain bun or check out one of the many New York City restaurants now using grass-fed meats in their menu, such as Bareburger, Brgr, and Tallgrass Burger. 4. Real Food: Gone are the days of consumers wanting to buy only “fat free” and “sugar free” foods. Instead, what we want is more natural foods and less processed ingredients – and major food companies and fast food restaurants are starting to listen. Kraft, General Mills, Taco Bell, and Panera are some of the leaders now committed to removing artificial preservatives, flavors, colors, and sweeteners from their foods in an effort to improve the quality and boost sales. It’s a win-win situation: good for their wallets and good for our waistlines. Let’s hope even more companies will follow suit in this real foods movement. Trend How-To: Always check the ingredients list on any packaged foods. If it has more than 5-10 ingredients, or ingredients you have never heard of or can’t pronounce ditch it. Don’t be fooled by front-of-package
labels like “all-natural” or “made with whole grains” as these claims can be deceiving. Instead, do the research yourself by checking out what is actually in the food you’re eating. When you cut out processed foods, you will be amazed at how much better you feel. 5. Veggie-centric meals: A recent report from The World Health Organization (WHO) ranked cured and processed meats alongside smoking as one of the top causes of cancer. According to the report, eating as little as one slice of ham or three slices of bacon (50g of processed meats) a day could in fact increase your chances of developing colorectal cancer by close to 20%. With many people trying to reduce their intake of processed meat, vegetables are becoming the new superstar on the plate. Trend How-To: You don’t need to become a full-time vegetarian, but try to incorporate at least one meal a day or one full day a week that is plantbased. Find fun ways to incorporate more vegetables, such as roasting them in a little olive oil, topping them with herbs and spices, dipping them in hummus, or sneaking them into your favorite meals. Your Meatless Monday dish could be as simple as having a vegetable omelet or avocado toast for breakfast, 3-bean chili for lunch, and homemade veggie pizza for dinner. Make an effort to include vegetables at every lunch and dinner, so your meals are packed with nutrients and will keep you full and satisfied. •

ocated in the Waldorf Astoria, one of New York City’s most iconic hotels, is Bull & Bear Prime Steakhouse. Occupying the bustling corner of Lexington Avenue and East 49th Street, this restaurant can be easy to miss but once inside you’ll be pleased you found this tucked away spot, which makes you feel as if you’ve been transported to another time and place.
With a history that dates back to the 1930s, it’s little wonder that this is one of New York City’s favorite bars for travelers and locals alike. Cited as one of the top three in the world, this legendary four-sided mahogany bar is a true sight to behold. Combine this with the restaurant’s Art Deco elements and you’ve got sumptuous décor with a welcoming atmosphere.

THE GREEN THEME Bull & Bear is a leader in the organic revolution because their host hotel is the only one with a beehive and garden rooftop, which is evident in the restaurant’s cuisine. They take pride in their menu made up of dishes using locally grown and organic ingredients wherever possible. To reduce their footprint, all of their food and beverages are purchased in bulk and they work with other hotels to purchase from one centralized location; plus you can’t get more local than your rooftop beehive and garden. TO START Try their East Coast oysters, which they source from Long Island’s south bay, as well as The Blue Oyster Company. These tender and sweet oysters are complimented by a perfectly tangy cocktail sauce. You might also want to try the Yellow Fin Ahi Tuna Tartare with Soy Sesame, which is diced and placed on seaweed that is pickled in house. Their homemade honey is drizzled on the side, so that you can add a bit of sweetness to play off of the sourness of the seaweed. The chef created a five-spice lavash for this dish with ingredients from the hotel’s rooftop garden, so the flavor is unique and unlike any other five-spice lavash you may experience elsewhere in the city. I highly recommended the Sizzling Thick-Cut House Bacon appetizer, which is cured for 12 days with honey from the hotel’s rooftop beehive. This starter dish is more like a small slow-roasted pork tenderloin—a half-inch thick with a crispy outside and tender and moist center. 76 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2016
THE MAIN EVENT I found the Jumbo Shrimp Scampi superb. It’s not overly garlicky like many similar dishes I’ve had. Here, you can taste the shrimp in a nice creamy sauce made with herbs sourced from their rooftop garden. The star of the evening, however, is the Prime Rib Chop. General Manager Damien Collins claims it to be the best in the city and I totally agree with him. The restaurant ages their prime rib for 35 days and slow roasts it for nine hours. This exclusive dish is only available on the weekends, so I recommend you make a reservation to dine on a Friday or Saturday. Usually a prime rib is fairly uniform throughout, but Bull & Bear’s rendition offers different layers of flavors. After the savory bark, you get to the center of the meat that is tender and juicy. This dish is served with horseradish and béarnaise sauces, but it’s not the sauces that complement the prime rib, it’s the prime rib that helps balance the sauces. In fact, you don’t even need sauce for this prime rib, as it stands on its own in terms of texture and flavor. I would be hard pressed to find any restaurant in the city that can compare to the brilliance of Bull & Bears’ Prime Rib Chop. The Met Moves Into the 21st Century

he opening of the Met Breuer Museum on East 74th Street and Madison Avenue in Manhattan ushers in another exciting dimension of The Metropolitan Museum of Art with the exhibit “Unfinished, Thoughts Left Visible” and a retrospective of the works of Indian artist Nasreen Mohamedi. “Unfinished” is a show waiting to happen,” said one enthusiastic New Yorker and frequent visitor to The Met. Forty percent of the 200-plus works that fill the Third and Fourth floors of Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer’s iconic building are from The Met’s unparalleled collection, many never before seen. The balance of the works are on loan from major national and international collections. In “Unfinished, Thoughts Left Visible,” the curators examine the process of the world’s great artists from the early Renaissance to the present, and ask the question “When did they deem their work finished”? What are the dialectics behind why works were left “unfinished?” Were they by accident, necessity, or intent? The emotional intensity of Titian’s masterpiece confronts us as we exit the elevator on the Third floor. Color in The Flaying of Marsyas (c.1570) is restrained. People move freely around the canvas, with some areas intentionally raw and sketchily executed. The wall label suggests that the painting may be “unfinished,” or “more likely that the artist deliberately used the non-finito technique to best convey the tragic story.” For whatever reason, the original method would be carried through for generations. Soon after Titian’s death, his student, Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti) 78 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2016
adopted the non-finito technique. Criticized for his haste because he accepted low prices for his work, the oil and canvas Doge Alvise Mocenigo (1507-1577) bears the unmistakable sketchy quality that remained in his body of work throughout his life. A student of Rembrandt van Rijn described the master’s style as an “unusual abbreviated technique.” Rembrandt was searching for the essence of humanity by probing intensely into the psychology of his subjects – or perhaps his personal difficulties (in 1654 Rembrandt was forced to surrender his possessions to creditors). Light touches of thick paint achieve the luminous light qualities and rich, warm surfaces of the face and hand in his St. Bartholomew (1657) while the figure recedes into the dark brown background. Considered a leader of the avant-garde painters by 1865, Manet painted typical Impressionist subjects, focusing on light and movement and reducing forms to spots and patches of tone. Of the three unfinished paintings of his wife, Suzanne Leenhoff, the Dutch pianist, one shows her face carefully painted. Manet, however, was discontented with it, repainted it twice and finally abandoned it. The five seascapes of Joseph Mallord William Turner displayed in its gallery sum up his affinity with tumultuous, gale-swept seas and his occupation with light. His works appear ethereal dissolving into luminous color. The wall label of Margate (?) from the Sea 1835-40 notes, “Turner used brushes, a cloth, a palette knife, and possibly his hands to achieve the varied surfaces of this work, which was never exhibited by the artist and is presumed to be unfinished.” As the power of the unfinished self-portrait by Edvard Munch, Alice Neel’s James Hunter Black Draftee, 1965 is a stark metaphor for a life cut off. Although only the Hunter’s face and hand are

Hirschland, 1957 painted, Neel considered the work complete after he failed to return for his second sitting. Whether or not Hunter was killed in Viet Nam is unknown. The exhibition continues on the Fourth floor with striking canvasses by Pablo Picasso that are typically pieced, un- or underpainted. Visible compositional changes to The Charnel House, 1944-45, reveal Picasso’s reaction to all brutal, inhuman acts of violence. Rubbed out expressions of the figures are incomplete, yet Picasso considered it finished sufficiently to donate, take back and finally sell. The wall text indicated that the painting is based either on the Fascist bombing of the Spanish Civil War or the Nazi concentration camps. The oversized canvas of Untitled (Still Life), 2002 by Luc Tuymans is in tribute to a Cézanne Still Life. Tymans furtive, sparse coloration depicts the process of the master’s oeuvres, several of which are located opposite the Tuymans’ wall. Unlike the impressionists who strove to capture momentary visual sensations, Paul Cézanne studied the relationship between objects and subjects, constructing radiant paintings in thin, almost transparent washes. His aesthetic embraced the unresolved non-finito – intentionally unfinished style. According to the wall label, Cézanne shunned “long-standing conventions as to when a work was complete.” In the gallery behind the Cy Twomby Untitled (Green Paintings I - ), which have a bigness of character, ten small works assembled on the platform follow a diagram, which challenges the most art-knowledgeable viewer. With Untitled (No.2), 1996, Louise Bourgeois’ pink marble sculpture of hands gives us insight into their creation. Influenced by Michelangelo and Rodin, who carved body parts as studies, Bourgeois’ finished work possesses a delicate sensuality that is highly personal.

After surviving Nazi concentration camps, she began her artistic studies in the early 1950s, responding to many of the Surrealist, Nouveau Réalisme, and Pop Art developments of her time. Diagnosed with tuberculosis and later breast cancer, she began her “tumor” sculptures in 1968. An important contemporary painter, Maria Lassnig explores her inner world. In her present oeuvre, You or Me, 2005 (one gun pointing to her head, the other at the observer), Lassnig portrays herself in a moody physical state as she comes into contact with the world. In addition to painting, the prolific artist’s body of work encompasses animated film and sculpture. A new, light-based installation by Tatsuo Miyajima, created especially for “Unfinished,” will be on view in the Tony and Amie James Gallery in the lobby of The Met Breuer through mid-October. The Met mined its rich collections and scholarly resources to present the inaugural exhibition in space a visitor deemed “more intimate”. The innumerable problems and possibilities artists encountered in their creative explorations were as endless as the Met will confront as it moves into an airy, fresh, contemporary art world. • Upcoming exhibitions include a presentation of Diane Arbus’s rarely seen early photographic works (July 12–November 27, 2016) and the first museum retrospective dedicated to Kerry James Marshall (October 25, 2016–January 29, 2017). JUNGLE BOOK Rated PG Visually dazzling in IMAX 3D, Jungle Book is an eye-popping adventure with a stellar voice cast. Under Jon Favreau’s direction, the film, inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s popular stories, will delight children and grown-ups alike who are eager to experience a world inhabited by creatures large and small and cuddly and deadly. Mowgli (Neel Sethi), the man-cub raised by wolves (Lupita Nyong’o and Giancarlo Esposito) learns the jungle’s survival-of-the-fittest law at age 10. During the course of his adventures, which may frighten children under 6, Mowgli is befriended by Bagheera, a black panther (Ben Kingsley); nearly killed by a gigantic snake named Kaa (Scarlett Johansson); threatened by a ferocious Siberian tiger Shere Khan (Idris Elba); and rescued by Baloo, a gigantic lazy bear (Bill Murray). All the furry costars are CGI animals. Favreau’s decision not only won PETA’ s seal of approval, but the computer-generated four-legged stars and that slimy reptile are dazzling to behold on the big screen. There are innumerable memorable scenes and one of them is Baloo singing “The Bare Necessities.” I predict Jungle Book will be among the Oscar-nominated animated feature films next year.
CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Rated PG-13 “Sometimes I just want to punch you in your perfect teeth,” says Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) to Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). The issue is dividing the two men, whose alter egos are Iron Man and Captain America, concerns government oversight of superhero activity. Politicians and the public alike are demanding accountability after a recent mission went terribly wrong. Their rift forces the Avengers to choose sides. War Machine (Don Cheadle) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) are among those remaining loyal to Stark. Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Falcon (Anthony Mackie) are on team Cap. Political pundits may be tempted to draw comparisons between the divided superhero universe and the American electorate, but moviegoers are counting on Marvel’s popular characters to provide a muchneeded escape from the real world. Directors Anthony Russo and Joe Russo have a few surprises in store for the Comic Com crowd and everyone else. It’s not a spoiler to mention Spiderman’s appearance. The web-slinger is briefly seen in the movie trailer. MONEY MONSTER Rated R Lee Gates (George Clooney), whose on-air personality resembles that of CNBC’s Jim Cramer, anchors a financial advice show produced and directed by Patty Fenn (Julia Roberts) The live broadcast is violently interrupted when Kyle Budwell (Jack O’Connell), an investor of modest means, kidnaps Gates demanding payback. With millions of viewers watching, Gates attempts to explain to his increasingly agitated captor the intricacies of the global markets while wearing a bomb attached to his chest. Director Jodie Foster coincidentally benefits from perfect timing. LOVE & FRIENDSHIP Of all the films and mini-series based on Jane Austen’s novels, none can be described as an uproariously funny romantic comedy. Set in the English countryside of 1790, director Whit Stillman’s film combines romantic rivalry and duplicity as much as not more than love and friendship. The newly widowed Lady Susan (Kate Beckinsale) leaves London for the countryside to escape its well-bred gossips who have many reasons to shun a beautiful, conniving flirt. Lady Susan soon directs her attention to a wealthy young man and sets her sights on an eligible older aristocrat as a potential mate for her flighty 18-yearold daughter. Mr. Stillman deftly makes his point about women’s social and financial status in another century. To quote Lady Susan: “We are who we marry”. In addition to Ms. Beckinsale’s sublime performance, there are two others—Chloe Sevigny as Lady Susan’s American best friend and Tom Bennett playing the amiable nitwit. In the trivia department, Ms. Beckinsale and Ms. Sevigny costarred in Whit Stillman’s Last Days of Disco in 1998.
ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS Rated PG Don’t be late for a very important date, which is May 27th when the highly-anticipated sequel to Tim Burton’s 2010 blockbuster arrives in all its 3D splendor. The titular character played by Mia Wasikowska escapes from a mental hospital and returns to a visually amazing Wonderland to save the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp). Helena Bonham Carter and Ann Hathaway return as the Red Queen and The White Queen respectively. Michael Sheen bounces back in the White Rabbit role, and Stephen Fry recreates the Cheshire Cat’s grin. Mr. Burton handed the directorial duties to James Bobin but remained involved as the film’s producer. X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Rated PG-13 The immortal mutant of the title (Oscar Issacs) awakens from a thousand-year nap and vows to destroy the world. The looming end of days catastrophe propels the X-Men into action in the franchise’s ninth installment, which features Jennifer Lawrence (Raven/ Mystique), Michael Fassbender (Erik Lensherr/Magneto), and James McAvoy (Charles Xavier/Professor X) to name a few. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine character makes a brief appearance, as does X-Men’s co-creator Stan Lee. Rose Byrne (Moira MacTaggert), the CIA agent who is new to the X-Men universe, uncovers the clock is ticking doomsday plot. May Broadway Reviews with Pat Collins FULLY COMMITTED Lyceum Theater Jesse Tyler Ferguson brings his considerable star power and boundless energy to the oneman show Fully Committed. He is Sam Callahan, an actor who has yet to land a part in a hit show and depends on his job taking reservations at an impossible to get into Manhattan restaurant to pay the bills. But Sam is not Mr. Ferguson’s only role in playwright Becky Mode’s comedy. He also plays all the restaurant patrons from mobsters to supermodels on the other end of the call. Mr. Ferguson’s Broadway career began when he was cast in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee in 2005. He also appeared in a number of Shakespeare In The Park productions including A Midsummer’s Night Dream and The Merchant of Venice. Fully Committed’s limited run ends July 24th. The 5-time Emmy nominee returns to L.A. for the 7th season of Modern Family. TUCK EVERLASTING Broadhurst Theater If you could choose to live forever, would you decide to do so? That is the question posed in Tuck Everlasting, which is based on Natalie Babbitts’ bestseller and not on Disney’s saccharine 2002 movie. A chance meeting in the woods between the unhappy 11-year-old Winnie Foster (Sarah Charles Lewis) and the forever 17-year-old Jesse Tuck (Andrew Keenan-Bolger) will profoundly affect Winnie’s relationship with her family and her future. Tuck is not an ordinary teenager; he is immortal. So are his parents (Carolee Carmello and Michael Park), who like their son will live forever by drinking water from a magical spring. Eventually, Winnie must decide between spending eternity with Tuck or choose to remain mortal. There are 15 songs in Chris Miller’s and Nathan Tysen’s score. Claudia Shear and Tim Federle wrote the book. Director Casey Nicholaw has four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. In addition to Tuck, his other productions are Aladdin, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and the Tony-winning Book Of Mormon. AMERICAN PSYCHO Gerald Schoenfeld Theater When American Psycho was published in 1991, Tammy Bruce the president of NOW (National Organization Of Women) described the book as a “how-to manual on the torture and dismemberment of women.” Gloria Steinem was another vocal opponent of Brett Easton Ellis’ novel, and the 2000 film starring Christian Bale brought more controversy. Will the Broadway musical starring Benjamin Walker as the sadistic/serial killer/Wall Street banker Patrick Bateman provoke a similar reaction? Mr. Walker expressed his concerns during an interview with Alexis Soloski of the New York Times and described the first 40 pages of the book as “unsettling.” However, compared to the book and the excessively bloody film, the stage adaptation can be described as “Psycho Lite.” There is less gore and of course a score that combines top 40 favorites, such as “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” with new music and lyrics by Duncan Sheik. They are not as memorable as the vintage 80’s hits energetically performed by a top-notch cast; but from first scene to the last, Mr. Walker owns every moment he’s on stage as the charming, vain, and impeccably-dressed party-going slasher. American Psycho on stage does not shock and repulse us as the film did, and it fails to provide new insights into the cocaine snorting, club-hopping morally bankrupt, and materialistic creatures who dominated Manhattan night life in the late 80’s. Mr. Walker’s extraordinary performance is the only reason to see American Psycho. The London production of American Psycho, which starred Matt Smith of Doctor Who fame, received mixed reviews. 84 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2016
THE CRUCIBLE Walter Kerr Theater You probably read Arthur Miller’s play in high school—or at least the Cliff Notes—and saw the 1996 film with Daniel Day-Lewis, Joan Allen, and Winona Ryder. Director Ivo Van Hove’s production provides an entirely different experience. The setting is a large, drab classroom. Abigail Williams (Saoirse Ronan) and her teenage classmates are dressed in plaid school uniforms. The adults wear nondescript clothes that were not in fashion in 17th-century Salem, Massachusettes. The play, which features an original score by Philip Glass and does not resemble previous productions, will appeal to a young audience and the revival also provides an exceptional theatrical experience for older theatergoers well acquainted with Mr. Miller’s celebrated play. Ms. Ronan, whose starring role in Brooklyn earned her an Oscar nomination, delivers a magnificent performance as the jealous, manipulative, vengeful teenager whose affair with the married John Proctor (Ben Whishaw) brought about the Salem witch trials and the subsequent hanging of innocent women. Mr. Miller wrote his play in response to Senator Joe McCarthy’s and HUAC’s 1950’s witch hunt. Every time The Crucible is revived it proves to be as timely as it was all those decades ago. In addition to Ms. Ronan, the other standouts in the cast are Mr. Whishaw, Ciaran Hinds, and the glorious Sophie Okonedo as Elizabeth Proctor. Put The Crucible on your must-see list.

WICKED’S BIG NUMBER The road to Oz is paved in green. The hugely popular musical, which opened in 2003, recently reached the $1 billion mark. Only two other shows have achieved that number—The Lion King and Phantom of the Opera. Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel were the original stars. Ms. Menzel won the Tony for best actress in a musical, but in a major upset, Wicked did not win the Tony for best musical. Avenue Q did.
TONY AWARDS Congratulations to all the 2016 Tony nominees. Awards will be handed out on June 12, 2016. CBS will broadcast the ceremony hosted by James Corden at 8:00 PM.
TIMES SQUARE VISITOR INFO The costumed characters including Elmo, Spider-Man, and Minnie Mouse are not associated with Sesame Street, Marvel Comics or Disney. They are street performers, and most of them are rude and aggressive. Under the law, they have the legal right to be there, but a new law that goes into effect in early summer prevents them from blocking pedestrian pathways, which is where they usually pressure tourists and New Yorkers alike into giving them money in exchange for posing for photographs. Parents with young children should avoid contact with these costumed solicitors.
CAST CHANGES Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson departed The Color Purple earlier this month. Heather Headley is the new Shug Avery, the flamboyant blues singer who befriends Celia, brilliantly played by Cynthia Erivo in her Broadway debut. DIRTY GRANDPA Rated R How bad is this movie? The so-called comedy received 103 negative reviews from critics across the country. That score is even worse than the one for Robert DeNiro’s Grudge Match. The newlywidowed Dick Kelly (Robert De Niro) pressures his soon to be married grandson, Jason (Zac Effron) into taking a road trip to Boca Raton, Florida. But at a diner en route the younger Kelly runs into a former classmate (Zoey Deutch) who persuades the men to join her and her friends in Daytona Beach for the annual bacchanal known as Spring Break. The sex-deprived grandfather is on a mission and with the assistance of a college student (Aubrey Plaza) that mission is accomplished in a scene that will not be in the video montage of his best work when Mr. De Niro receives another career achievement award. Effron’s preppy character swaps his J. Crew clothes for a G-string, smokes crack and lands in jail. Dirty Grandpa is not to be confused with Johnny Knoxville’s Bad Grandpa, which qualifies as a comedy classic compared to Mr. DeNiro’s most recent flop.
PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES Rated PG-13 Jane Austen’s much-adored 1813 classic inspired the 2009 parody novel on which this ridiculous movie is based. In a teashop in literary heaven, Miss Austen no doubt passed out on a Chippendale love seat when she received news of her wealthy and dashing hero Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley) and his equally well-bred friends battling an army of invading zombies. Those undead creatures have the temerity to interrupt a high stakes poker game and worse invade an elegant dinner party in scenes which pretty much resemble the humanzombie confrontations in countless other horror movies. The film’s one redeeming scene features Elizabeth Bennet (Lily James) and her sister Jane (Bella Heathcote) battling battalions of zombies as the undead march into London. THE FINEST HOURS Rated PG-13 Chris Pine, who is best known for commanding the USS Enterprise in the rebooted Star Trek series, embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue the crew on board a sinking oil tanker during a ferocious nor’easter off the coast of Chatham, Massachusetts. Chief warrant officer Bernie Webber (Pine) has orders to pilot a lifeboat with a three-man crew. His biggest challenge is navigating the dangerous Chatham Bars and those tension-filled 20 minutes rank as the movie’s best. Moviegoers who experienced seasickness watching Titanic are advised to close their eyes until Webber and crew reach the split-in-two ship. Oddly the Boston-born and raised Casey Affleck (Ray Sybert) is the only cast member who does not speak with a Cape Coder accent. The first rather dull 30 minutes are devoted to introducing Webber’s plucky fiancée—an excellent Holliday Grainger and other key characters including Eric Bana as the Coast Guard station’s commanding officer. The film is based on a heroic true story (pictured below) that was headline news in 1952. The Finest Hours, however, is not in the same league as The Perfect Storm, which co-starred George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, and John C Reilly.

JOY Rated PG-13 Joy Mangano may not be a household name, but millions of women who manage a home own one of her indispensable inventions—the Miracle Mop. Jennifer Lawrence, who plays Mangano, earned her third Oscar nomination portraying the divorced, stressed, unemployed mother of three whose resourcefulness and keen business sense made her a millionaire. Director David O. Russell’s part fact-part fictional account of Joy’s success focuses as much on her eccentric family as it does her rocky path to success. The relatives include a divorced dad (Robert De Niro) whose fourth wealthy wife (Isabella Rossalli) loans Joy the money to make and market her invention. Jennifer reunites on screen for the third time with Bradley Cooper as the QVC executive who turns Joy into a home shopping superstar. A less than memorable screenplay and an overabundance of quirky characters are two reasons why Mr. Russell’s most recent film is not in the same league as American Hustle and his Oscar-nominated film Silver Linings Playbook. Ms. Lawrence, however, adds another extraordinary performance to her list of impressive credits, which includes an Academy Award for Silver Linings Playbook and Oscar nominations for Winter’s Bone, American Hustle, and Joy. WHERE TO INVADE NEXT Rated R In this documentary, Michael Moore and his camera crew visit Italy, Portugal, France, and a number of other countries to learn how they better provide for their citizens than the US does. In Italy, new mothers have 5-months paid maternity leave, and factory workers enjoy 30 paid vacation days. French public school children are fed healthy lunches of grilled fish and fresh veggies. Finnish kids are among the best educated in the world despite being assigned only one hour of daily homework. Slovenia provides free college tuition for qualified students, but Mr. Moore fails to mention that Slovenia’s population totals 2,061,085 as compared to America’s 321,605,012. Invade is both entertaining and informative despite Mr. Moore’s often unnecessary commentary. DEADPOOL Rated R Digital HD, DVD, and Blu-Ray With a global box office tally of $756 million and counting, Deadpool exceeded the expectations of Marvel executives, film critics, and its creators. The film owes its success to director Tim Miller and Ryan Reynolds in the dual role of Special Forces operative Wade Wilson and the sarcastic masked antihero Deadpool. His exceptional performance should obliterate all memory of the disastrous Green Lantern. The film, which contains violence, sex, and vulgar language is not appropriate for children. Deadpool suffers from a surplus of bad guys, but not one of them is a memorable villain. Despite its flaws, Mr. Ryan’s movie makes the dreadful Batman v Superman look like a cinematic classic.
SCANDAL ABC’s political thriller starring Kerry Washington marked its fourth anniversary in April. Season 2, which focuses on President Fitzgerald Grant’s re-election, arrives on DVD May 15th. A day later, Season 3 will be released.
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK Season 3 of Netflix’s Emmy-winning series is available on DVD and Blu-Ray May 17th. •

Is the “Designer Dog” the New Pedigree? By Dr. Heather Loenser ew York is the quintessential melting pot; not just for us, but for our pets, too. From pit bulls to Pomeranians and bulldogs to boxers, virtually every breed calls New York home. We’re talking pure breeds, mixed breeds, and the evergrowing population of “designer dogs”. As a veterinarian, I see more and more of these hybrids visiting my practice, from the itty bitty teacup “Cheeks” (Chihuahua/Pekingese mix) to the largerthan-life Great Pyredane (Great Dane/Great Pyrenees mix). So, what’s up with these designer dogs and why are they so desirable? Ask any owner of a designer dog, and you’ll get an answer something like this: “We wanted a cocker spaniel, but it sheds. So we got a cockapoo and that solved the problem.” And that, in fact, is exactly why the designer dog was created: to fill a need. Take, for example, the Labradoodle. In the 1980s, Wally Conron, the breeding manager for the Royal Guide Dog Association of Australia, was inundated with requests for hypoallergenic guide 92 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2016
dogs. He thought the standard poodle would be perfect because it doesn’t shed and is very intelligent. However, after working with them for a few years, he discovered that they didn’t have what it takes to be great guide dogs. He then had a brainstorm: Why not cross the poodle with a Labrador retriever, a breed already established as a reliable guide dog? And the Labradoodle was born. Unfortunately, the hybrid didn’t work either because not all of Wally’s Labradoodles came out the same; some were not hypoallergenic. Only when you mix two pure breeds over a long period of time will you get predictable offspring. This is true for the cockapoo (cocker spaniel/poodle), the goldendoodle (golden retriever/poodle), the Maltipoo (Maltese/poodle), the Schnoodle (Schnauzer/poodle) and a myriad of other designer dogs. Take the case of upper westsider Rosemary who fell in love with a friend’s very small, well-behaved goldendoodle. She made it her mission to adopt one just like it and found the perfect pup in Florida. After multiple conversations with the breeder, the doodle was flown to JFK into Rosemary’s waiting arms. But the pup was

By adopting from a shelter, you’re often saving a pet’s life. Adopt from a breed rescue organization A little-known fact is that there are rescue organizations for most breeds including designer dogs. If you Google “Maltipoo rescue”, you’ll see what I mean. What’s invaluable is that many of these rescue groups have go-to foster families who care for the dogs until their forever homes are found. This affords the foster parents opportunities to screen the dogs for stress or aggression as they interact with family pets and kids. The foster families get to know the dogs well, which is very helpful to prospective pet parents who are eager to learn everything they can about their new dog. Ultimately, foster parents can act as matchmakers, helping you decide if the pet is the perfect fit for your family. Purchase from a Reputable Breeder Not only can the characteristics of designer dogs vary wildly, the dedication of the people who breed them can, too. Some care about money above all else, while others are dedicated to providing families with healthy, happy dogs. What you don’t want to do is accidentally support “puppy mills”, which house the breeding dogs in cages and remove their puppies at a very young age. These pups are then sold to pet stores or through online brokers. To avoid this, visit the breeder to meet your puppy and his parents. Make sure the dogs have enough space to play, engage with people, and receive regular veterinary care.
not like her friend’s at all: he was larger, much more rambunctious and, horror of all horrors, he shed all over the place! Yes, he was a goldendoodle, but apparently he had way more “golden” than “doodle.” After investing in a new vacuum cleaner and a few obedience classes, the new dog settled in beautifully. Thankfully, no one in the family had allergies, or Rosemary would have had a big problem. The lesson here? Before you say “yes” to the pet, meet him in person. Since the characteristics of designer dogs vary, it’s important to spend time with the dog and to ask pertinent questions to whoever’s caring for him. Rosemary would have benefited from asking the breeder the following questions: Which of the two breeds presents itself more? Knowing he was more “golden” would have alerted her to the fact that he might be a shedder. Sometimes the quality you want to eliminate in the mix will still be prevalent if the dog is more of one breed than the other. For example, a puggle (pug/beagle) might still be a howler if he’s more beagle than pug. How big will he be? Had Rosemary asked how many pounds the dog’s parents were, she would have been able to gauge her dog’s adult weight. Many pet owners have watched in amazement as their so-called “mini” labradoodles rocket to 50 pounds. What is his activity level? Because Rosemary’s dog was large and much more energetic than she anticipated, he was like a bull in a china shop in her small apartment. Had she asked about his energy level, she might have chosen a different dog.
And finally, as soon as you bring your new dog home, make an appointment with a veterinarian. This visit is crucial because it will ensure he’s received vaccines tailored to his new lifestyle with you. The vet will screen for common congenital and infectious diseases and make sure he is free of fleas, ticks, and other pests. Choose a practice accredited by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). These are hospitals evaluated regularly on nearly 900 standards of veterinary care. Locate one near you by going to AAHA.org and keying in your zip code in the AAHA Hospital Locator. On a final note, I ask you this: If you can get the “perfect dog” by mixing just two breeds, imagine what you’ll get in a dog mixed with lots of breeds? Those are the dogs that need you most, and they’re waiting for you at your local shelter. This series will share personal stories from interesting New Yorkers on their work and experiences in the city. Enjoy ! One of my favorite slices of New York life is riding the subway, especially the #7 train. I notice the diversity of the people speaking so many different languages. I observe the changing neighborhoods, and watch who gets on and off. Are they students? Healthcareproviders heading to hospital shifts? Exhausted construction workers going home? They are lost in their own thoughts and their own lives, but everybody is going in the same direction. It is New York at its best. I love it. For much the same reason, I love watching the interactions in the public library. There is no place that demonstrates how the sum of the parts adds up to more than the whole quite like a public library. On the surface: shelves of books, computers, a handful of staff... but it is so much more. 94 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2016
In my new position as President and CEO of the Queens Library, I chose to locate my desk on the main public service floor. It gives me an opportunity to observe the “street life” of the library. Library customers regularly engage me in conversation. They are not shy—this is New York! I try to gently probe, to gain a greater understanding of what they want and need from us. As the saying goes: there are eight million stories and they take their questions, wants, needs, and dreams to the public library. And no matter what, the library staff rises to the occasion. They are unflappable. During my very first week, a man recognized me and introduced himself. He had just been released from prison after a very long time. He did not mention why, but had done hard time. Now, he needed to find a job and gain the skills to keep it. He had come to the library for help with his resume and to sign up for computer workshops. I met a woman who told me she had recently earned an online doctoral degree using the library’s computers and resources, since she does not have a computer or broadband at home. I met a roomful of Korean-American parents with their babies who had come to the library for bilingual toddler story time. They know the importance of early literacy activities in developing good readers. I
met a man in his mid-90s who usually receives Mail-A-Book service to his home, but who took advantage of mild weather to come to the mobile library, so he could update his reading preferences and give the staff his very strong viewpoint on the upcoming presidential elections. I met a group of seniors who come to the library every day to read the Greek-language newspapers. They can get the papers at home, but who wants to sit home all day alone, reading the newspaper? I met a woman who credits the library for her business success and for allowing her to write and publish a book. I have met adult learners who credit the library with helping them write simple sentences in English. I have also had the privilege of meeting many of the hard-working and dedicated library staff, who come to work every day ready for anything. New immigrants with questions about their immigration status are referred to free legal assistance. Students with research projects (already overdue), are directed to age-appropriate reference materials with a good dose of advice about not leaving things until the last minute. Girls from difficult circumstances are discreetly slipped packets of personal hygiene supplies. People who are new to the neighborhood want to find a doctor who will accept their insurance and who speaks Pashto or Italian or any of the dozens of other languages. Red-faced teens whisper questions about their reproductive health. Too many people, in dire need of social services, just need help, every kind of help. All of this happens in parallel with a book discussion on a popular novel, a flamenco performance and a workshop on using social media to promote a home business.

The Queens Library staff is as diverse as the customers. They speak dozens of languages and have many interests and skill sets. How can they possibly serve the broad range of informational needs of a place like Queens? They are also New York at its best and I love it. •

15 Minutes with Laura Benanti

t’s said that when an actor or singer makes it to the Broadway stage, they’ve really made it big in their career. So what do you say about an actress who launched her career on Broadway, then soon after hits the silver screen and moves seamlessly between the two? I’d say she’s a real star. Tony award-winning Laura Benanti is one such blazing comet. The charming New Yorker who recently won over viewers as the rising songbird in ABC’s Nashville, is back on Broadway starring in the new hit, She Loves Me at the Roundabout Theatre Company. Here, Benanti takes some time out of her busy schedule to chat with us. NYLM: Tell us about working on She Loves Me and your Broadway career. LB: She Loves Me is a dream role for me. I listened to the original cast recording starring Barbara Cook (my idol) as a very young girl and dreamed of playing this role. My first role on Broadway was I when I was 18 years old. I starred as Maria opposite Richard Chamberlain in The Sound of Music. From there, I’ve gone on to do eight more Broadway shows, as well as many television shows. NYLM: Did you take a break from theater to be on television? Are you happy to be back on Broadway? LB: I chose to focus on television, the way I focused on theater for so long. I’m thrilled to be back. NYLM: Is singing more your passion? LB: Singing and acting are equally my passions. But singing is an exhilarating experience and a gift for which I’m very grateful. NYLM: Tell us a little about your role in Nashville. Did you love it because you also got to sing, as opposed to just act, such as on Supergirl? 96 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MAY 2016
LB: It’s always nice to show the full range of your talents. I got to do that in The Sound of Music Live! for NBC and Nashville; and that was fantastic. However, I also loved being on Supergirl (on CBS). NYLM: What do you love about both theater and television? LB: They’re each different disciplines and I like working the muscles they both require. I appreciate that television work is preserved forever, and I love the ephemeral quality of the theater. NYLM: What are you obsessed with right now? LB: It’s hard to be obsessed with anything when you’re performing eight shows a week. Right now I’m obsessed with sleep. I’m also obsessed with spring in Central Park. NYLM: What is or was your favorite New York moment? LB: Getting my wedding photos taken outside of Riverside Church [last November] with drivers going by honking and cheering; and people walking by and wishing my husband and I well. New Yorkers are great. NYLM: What important current event or issue interests you right now? LB: The election, for sure. NYLM: What’s your favorite spot in New York? LB: I love the West Village. I love the history there. But, I also really love Harlem (our new neighborhood). My best friend Sarah Saltzberg has a real estate company called Bohemia Realty Group, and my brother-in-law Nick Brown works for her. That firm does so much for the community. It’s such a fantastic and community and family-oriented place to live. Lido is our favorite restaurant up there. It’s fantastic. •
