hat does the month of March mean to you? Some feel the madness of March by watching the best of the best at the annual NCAA gathering of colleges duking it out on the hardwood floors right down to the Final Four’s “One Shining Moment.” Others are feeling the “Luck of the Irish” throughout the city by watching the traditional brotherhood of endless bagpipers march up Fifth Avenue following the painted green line in NYC’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. For those of us who enjoy celebrating the holiday through our taste buds, let’s not forget we live in the best place in the world to sip an Irish coffee, drink a Nutty Irish Man or even slam down a traditional Irish car bomb. But it is not the day to start counting calories. You can find some unique sweets to treat yourself to like some especially made Lucky Charm cake that is genuinely magically delicious and even some hop-infused Stout doughnuts glazed with chocolate to satisfy your urge. But what makes this month extra special to me is my youngest daughter Cassidy is turning 16. Making it an exceptional mile marker for her, she will be celebrating her special day with a Sweet 16 Party with her friends and family. I cannot say enough about how much happiness, joy, and humor she brings to all of us. And how proud I am of her, not only in everything she does but what an incredible impact she has on others with her kindness, generosity, and thoughtfulness. GO WEST To start your trip on a leisurely note, fly into Shannon Airport in Co. Clare on the west coast. It’s quieter pace makes customs a breeze. Also, if you depart from Shannon, you’ll experience one of the best duty-free shops (in fact, duty-free originated here). From Shannon, it’s a quick drive north to one of Ireland’s most breathtaking sights, the famed Cliffs of Moher. The Cliffs rise in places to over 700 feet, straight out of the Atlantic, and extend for nearly five miles. There’s a walking trail along the top that’s a must-do for hikers. Just off the Atlantic Coast in Co. Galway, are the spectacular Aran Islands, one of the last outposts of Gaelic civilization. Ruins cover the islands, making them perfect for exploration. Irish is still the language of its inhabitants, and traditional Irish food is served at its numerous pubs. A ferry runs several times daily from the town of Doolin, four miles south of the Cliffs of Moher. And if the seas aren’t to your liking, relax in the village of Doolin where the pubs are renowned for their foot-tapping Irish music. Kick back with a Guinness and enjoy the rocky scenery outside the pub doors.

IT’S NOT ALL BLARNEY Traveling toward the center of Ireland, you’ll find its most famous tourist destination—Blarney Castle in Co. Cork. A short drive east from Blarney Castle, you’ll find the Rock of Cashel, an imposing stronghold that overlooks the town of Cashel. Also on the River Liffey, you’ll find O’Shea’s Merchant, a pub offering traditional Irish music and dancing nightly. If you haven’t had enough nightlife, be sure to visit the Temple Bar area, off Dame Street. Here, in the middle of Dublin, you’ll meet a global crowd from dozens of countries over drinks and dinner, and you’re sure to leave the Emerald Isle having made a few new friends.

apan is an island country filled with wondrous sites, exotic foods, and gracious people. And with just five months before the torch ignites the flame at the Summer Olympics, it’s prep time. So, in addition to booking your hotel rooms and flights immediately, you need to become Japan-savvy when it comes to customs and practices.

English is taught throughout Japan. But this doesn’t mean that everyone speaks English. On top of this, the Japanese people can be shy. If you have no mastery of the language, arm yourself with Google Translate and a phrasebook like Just Enough Japanese, and always carry a card with your destination written in Japanese.
TRANSPORTATION
For visitors used to public transportation, the Japanese transit system will still feel daunting. It’s extensive and efficient and covers everywhere you’d want to go, but it’s confounding. Metros, subways, and trains all crisscross at various stations like Shinjuku and Tokyo, two of the busiest (and largest) commuter hubs in the world, and you can easily get confused searching for a line or an exit. Google Maps is helpful, as are station attendants. But don’t count on passersby to know where you need to go—it’s possible they’re as confused as you are and, then, there’s the language barrier. Japan’s train network is far-reaching and everything runs on time. If you plan to travel countrywide, book a Japan Rail Pass before you arrive in Japan for significant savings. Changing trains and running upstairs and escalators are challenging, as is locating storage space on transit if your luggage is leading you instead of the reverse. ATMs in Japan work only with Japanese bank cards. Plan to arrive in Japan with yen in hand in the event you can’t find a place to change money when you land. Your best bet will be the ATMs at 7-11’s and Family Marts located: it seems, every two blocks. Japan is largely a cash-based country, too, so don’t count on using credit cards exclusively.

Taxis are expensive in Japan. Personally, I love taxis because I’d rather see more of the city above ground than below, but given the traffic, they’re just not practical. On the plus side, taxis are extremely clean, and some have heated seats. Doors open and close automatically and you can use credit cards. Larger, accessible JPN Taxis by Toyota, some with hybrid engines, are gradually replacing workhorse Toyota Crowns in anticipation of the 2020 Summer Olympics.
FOOD
Be an adventurous diner. Eschew the boring American chains. For a burger fix, hit up MOS Burger where you can enjoy Japanese permutations like ebi or tusukune rice. I’d prefer that you try some of the eclectic street food found at izakayas and bars. My favorites? Yakitori (skewers), fish cakes, okonomiyaki (egg pancakes), ramen, and chopped octopus balls called takoyaki. Some of the best fast-casual options are at department store food halls and in theme-specific lanes like Ramen Street at Tokyo Station. Japan offers sushi and sashimi options to meet all budgets. Conveyor-belt sushi, where you pay according to the number of plates chosen, offers quality at a fair price. Medium-priced sushi is popular for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For a truly remarkable experience, omakase dining with selections chosen by the chef can be had for a price but are worth it for the precision and quality. Non-fish eaters have vegetable, pickle, and soup options, and carnivores will love Japan’s exquisitely marbled wagyu beef.
CROWD MANAGEMENT
Major tourist hubs are crowded. Tokyo can feel like New York City or Hong Kong on steroids. Subway pushers crowd people onto trains. Late workers (the norm in Japan) fill stations well past 8 pm. And people queue up patiently for everything from apple pie and pancakes to drip coffee. If constant chaos is not your thing, consider traveling beyond Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka to areas easily accessed by Shinkansen high-speed bullet trains where you’ll have experiences that are authentic and immersive without the masses. If the throngs of gawkers at Tokyo’s Tsukiji and Toyosu fish markets give you the shakes, you can have an enjoyable experience with top-quality fish sampling at the Furukawa Fish Market in Aomori in the Tohoku region. Instead of fighting crowds at the Shinto Meiji Shrine in Shibuya or the Sensoji Buddhist Temple in Asakusa, visit the Yahiko Shrine in Niigata. Bring a stack of business cards. It’s customary to offer your card as an introduction but note the proper etiquette. Hold your card in both hands, face-up, as you bow in greeting. Hugs and shaking hands are the exception rather than the rule. But you won’t be considered completely rude if you forget and say goodbye with a fond embrace. Japan is a no-tipping country. While you might be tempted to round up your bill or leave spare change on the table, don’t. You might be surprised when a server follows you to return your coins, or when the bills left for your chambermaid remain untouched. Leaving a tip is as foreign to the Japanese as not leaving one is to us.
WALKING
One custom that I still haven’t gotten used to is waiting for red lights to turn green before crossing a street. In Japan, people wait in orderly fashion whether there’s traffic on the road or not. And don’t even think about jaywalking in Japan—it’s just not done. Walking and eating are frowned upon in Japan, too. If you’re in a rush, buy your snack or sandwich and stand next to the counter to eat before you hit the streets. In this über-clean country, trash barrels are scarce, another good reason not to munch on the go. heers, dears! March is my favorite month: it’s still cozy cold, but signs of spring slowly get us out of hibernation. It’s also when I turn a year younger, at least at heart (although with my L.Raphael skincare regimen, I can argue more). Anyone who has ever visited Paris’ George V Hotel knows Jeff Leatham. The American florist, famous for his unabashed explosions of color and creativity, is a celebrity in his own right, and his fame extends far across the Atlantic. Now the most in-demand florist, he designs events for celebrities like Oprah, Cher and Tina Turner, in addition to the Four Seasons Hotels in Beverly Hills and Philadelphia. But this spring, you need not stay at a five-star hotel or buddy up to a celebrity to see Leatham’s genius. Through the season, he will be exhibiting Jeff Leatham’s Kaleidoscope at the New York Botanical Garden’s annual Orchid Show. His surprising, captivating designs, using thousands of orchids, will transform each gallery of the exhibition in NYBG’s historic Enid A. Haupt Conservatory into a mosaic of color. Leatham will use orchids of every conceivable shape and provenance, including rare and iconic specimens. “Color is the first and most important aspect of my work, always,” the artist said. “I want every gallery to be a different color experience for visitors as they move through them, like looking into a kaleidoscope. Outside of New York, I was dazzled by another destination recently, and one place in particular: The International House in New Orleans, a boutique hotel steps away from the French Quarter. Housed in a Beaux Arts-style building dating back to 1906, the hotel effortlessly blends that history with a modern vibe and artistic flair. The hotel, owned by NOLA entrepreneur Sean Cummings and designed by LM Pagano, is a feast for all with art and international influences like a tufted ottoman covered in a swirling garnet brocade in the lobby, an array of velvet slipper chairs and brocade club chairs, a vintage West African carved mahogany King Bench, two large African drums that serve as side tables, and a richly carved Walga throne from the Ivory Coast. And that’s just the lobby! The guest rooms are spacious, modern, and convenient as well. Most interestingly, the hotel has gained local and national prominence for its embrace of the arts and culture, including a recent celebration of writer Charles Bukowski, whose books captured the soul of New Orleans like no other. f you are looking to live off the beaten path in a low-key neighborhood, while still close enough to all of Manhattan’s luxuries, then Murray Hill may be the place to be. Centrally located, stretching from 34th to 42nd Streets between Fifth Avenue and the East River, Murray Hill boasts a range of choices from co-ops and condos to brownstones. Villa Berulia This is a fantastic restaurant. With a Croatian-Italian menu, how could you go wrong? Located off the busy intersection of Park Avenue and 34th Street, the restaurant has hosted the likes of Hillary Clinton and legends, including Derek Jeter. Some menu favorites include Breast of Chicken sautéed with white wine and Buzra, a traditional Dalmatian seafood. Info: villaberulia.com. Kajitsu Another favorite is the minimalist Japanese restaurant, Kajitsu. Shojin cuisine refers to a type of vegetarian cooking that originates in Zen Buddhism. Even though it does not use meat or fish, Shojin is regarded as the foundation of all Japanese cuisine, especially kaiseki, the Japanese version of haute cuisine. Info: kajitsunyc.com. In its present form, kaiseki is a multi-course meal in which fresh, seasonal ingredients are prepared in ways that enhance the flavor of each component, with the finished dishes beautifully arranged on plates. Officially founded in 2016, Hackett Interiors is a passion project between two sisters, Meghan Hackett-Cassidy and Erin Hackett. In this home project, the Hackett sisters also brought in a wide variety of light layers through pillows, blankets, lighting, and window treatments to add pops of color and detail.

Additionally, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on décor items that can make space feel brand new for the change of seasons. Look towards new bedding, fresh sheets, switching out the trinkets in your bookshelf to represent the season, modern coffee table books, pillows, etc. Then, you can focus on the higher-end statement pieces that can make a more significant difference in your home, such as a good quality sofa, armchairs, and a dining room chair set. as relocation been a recurring thought this year? Have you been looking for a less-stressful lifestyle for you and your family, or a retirement? A place with a strong economy, plenty of employment opportunities, and lots of recreational activities, too? This could only mean North Carolina. One location to consider is Charlotte, where the living is effortless. Offering all four seasons with warmer weather, a strong economy with lots of employment prospects, and time to meet Mother Nature with outdoor leisure fun makes North Carolina the relocation destination of choice. Charlotte is conveniently located just two hours from the Blue Ridge Mountains and three hours from the Atlantic coastline. Your Military Pension Military retirement pay may not be taxed at all if it meets specific requirements, including if the veteran was “vested in the retirement system” for five years as of August 12, 1989. Otherwise, tax exemptions may be applicable up to $4,000 for single returns and $8,000 for joint returns. One exception to the tax on non-vested military retirement pay over $4,000 is Veterans Affairs disability retirement pay. This type of military retirement pay is not subject to state or federal income tax. North resort-style retirement communities for those 55 and over— Carolina also has a program that gives disabled veterans a break and even includes boating. he name conjures up visions of elegance with a French accent. We recently caught up with the Loy Carlos to discover the secrets to his success. How did a career in IT help you transition into real estate? I started almost 30 years ago with a part-time administrative job. At the time, everyone was still using typewriters, and there were computer systems just sitting there. Since my father introduced me to programming when I was a teen, I was computer literate and trained brokers on how to integrate it into their business. Within three or so months, I became head of the IT department. That was a big deal then because it was the most critical position in the company. I would later move to three other top firms, where I mastered operational, marketing, and sales management projects. It was exhilarating to have worked on converting mainframes to PC-based systems: the first to integrate videos and listings, as well as to process transparencies, publish marketing materials with floor plans and photos inhouse. These are all standard practices now, but in the 1990s, they were considered crazy ideas. Then, in 2001, I took everything I learned in sales, advertising, marketing/branding, and technology and put them to work for real estate clients. It paid off, and the team I was on became the number one residential real estate group in the country, with over half a billion dollars in annual sales. What would you consider your biggest listing or client so far? One of the qualities my clients and colleagues admire most is my discretion 60 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2020
and fierce safeguarding of people’s confidentiality and privacy. I routinely sign confidentiality agreements, sometimes even before showing. I have and continue to work with clients from all industries and professions, some business moguls, and some celebrities and prominent personalities. Tell our readers about some trends you foresee. It’s pretty fundamental: how a person lives wholly influences where he or she lives, in what type or style of building, with what cadre of amenities. You can now see buildings with in-house restaurants that are collaborating with the art world and fashion houses. Culture is very much front and center these days. Hotel-type services are also eventually more standard than a unique amenity. I believe we will see a much more substantial commitment to things like energy efficiency and sustainability, for example. I think we will transition from awareness to action. magine rolling down Fifth Avenue in a cocoon of calm, driving a vehicle that was designed with an interior that keeps the city madness at bay. That’s the experience the new Lincoln Corsair promises—and delivers. Lincoln is known for its huge SUVs, like the Navigator, but let’s face it, in a place like New York City, only people like chauffeurs need a vehicle that big. But with the introduction of their first small luxury SUV, the company has the right idea for a car that can still hold a crowd (it seats five in its two-row configuration) and suitcases, groceries and other cargo in the back, too. The second row also folds down for even more cargo space or moves back to allow more legroom. The Corsair is nimble enough (especially in the drive mode called “Excite”) to slip through the worst traffic and to be fun to drive, too. With the buyer’s choice of a 2.0- or 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, both with an 8-speed “SelectShift” automatic transmission and AWD (all-wheel drive), the Corsair is powerful, even in terrible weather. Use the “Slippery” mode, and this SUV grabs the road and keeps you on track.

But the real joy of the Lincoln Corsair is that ultra-quiet interior, crafted by Lincoln’s engineers to baffle engine noise and reduce vibrations. They’ve even phased out the usual binging sounds most cars make (when a door is ajar, or the key is left in the car) and replaced them with six symphonic chimes instead. Believe it or not, they enlisted the Detroit Symphony Orchestra to record those sounds—and they work, creating a much more soothing experience.
The more compact size of this SUV helps with handling those city streets, as well as negotiating parallel parking or tight garage spaces. Meanwhile, the leather-lined interior and fully adjustable front seats will heat up on a cold winter’s day or massage your muscles during a long road trip, adding another level of luxury that you might not expect in a vehicle that begins at about $40,000.
It’s those little things you don’t even think about that help to create the interior cocoon; then add in the optional Revel premium audio system to program your own music experience. With 14 speakers, this system turns the car into whatever atmosphere makes you happy, from more of that calming symphony orchestra sound to the most raucous rock ‘n roll you can find.
As with most SUVs, the gas mileage you can expect isn’t exactly exemplary, with the 2.0-liter engine averaging about 22 city/29 highway (25 combined) miles per gallon and the 2.3 liter coming in at 24 combined. This summer, Lincoln will add the Corsair Grand Touring model to its stable, giving drivers a plug-in hybrid option that will do much better on mileage.
The car is chock full of other modern technologies, too, some standard and some add-ons, including the Lincoln Co-Pilot360, which allows the vehicle to take over in an emergency with features like “Pre-Collision Assist” that automatically brakes when the car senses an impending collision. There’s also the incredibly useful “Blind Spot Information System,” which shows you on your side mirrors when a vehicle is next to you. Additionally, the “Pedestrian Detection” feature is designed to avoid striking people on foot, another handy feature (especially when negotiating crowded city streets).
Overall, the Lincoln Corsair offers an easy-to-drive option for city dwellers who want to be swept away into a quiet space while taking on the mean streets. It’s an excellent car for a ride in the country, too; just open the windows to let nature’s sounds into your smooth ride. As the founder of Aline Pilates, she is one of the most disciplined and passionate Pilates instructors in New York, helping a diverse roster of clients with physical, mental and spiritual well-being. “We have a firm belief that by introducing Pilates into people’s everyday routines, they will become stronger both mentally and physically,” says Macaleer. “We have an incredibly diverse group of clients from all walks of life and ages, from teens to seniors, and our hope is that we can open their eyes to a sustainable Pilates program that will exist outside of our studio walls. Pilates is an exercise regimen that strengthens the core (abdominals, hips, and lower back) while stretching, stabilizing and engaging the small muscle groups that often times are ignored. Pilates helps you to learn how to engage certain muscle groups that may not be firing so the body works evenly and systematically helping to improve balance, flexibility and deep core strength. Pilates can be done with no machines and on a mat, or on an apparatus. What does Aline do differently than other studios? At Aline we use a simple mantra “Strength for Life,” which means using a classical Pilates approach tailored to each person’s individual goals every day of their lives. We understand that our clients come to us with individual goals. These could be as simple as strengthening their core or toning their body, but a lot of times it represents something else happening in their lives. This ranges from recovering from a sports injury or strengthening their body after the birth of a child; we take a classical Pilates approach and tailor a program for each client to help them achieve the goal that is so important to their life. Aline being a small local business and also women owned supports a number of not for profits. We have a series called “The Parlor Series” that is two-fold. We support local nonprofits and artists with events throughout the year using our parlor as a place to create and embrace community. The other focus is continuing education. What interested you in Pilates? I was training as a dancer in a scholarship program one summer when I was 12 years old. Our day started at 7am with Pilates mat work. Years later, in college I was a dance major and also dancing professionally in companies in Philadelphia. I practiced Pilates to prevent injuries and keep my body strong through the Pilates dance season. What don’t people know about Pilates? That it is very hard! Deceivingly hard, and the more you do the harder it gets. I sometimes hear that Pilates is a stretching workout. Yes, Pilates does incorporate stretching but Classical Pilates is one of the most intense workouts. It calls for complete control of the mind in order to concentrate on engaging new muscle groups. In such a wired world, when people are on their phones or sitting at desks working on computers, what are the dangers of that activity (or inactivity)? Sitting is the new smoking and tech neck phrases are so true and can be offset by doing Pilates. In our culture, because our work is so much on a computer/ phone, we habitually have to be more forward in posture. This position of our head (because we are looking down) can cause headaches, weakness in the neck and lower back pain. Sitting increases tightness in the lower back and legs. In order to combat this, we need to make sure we are working to increase proper posture, stretching and strengthening of all the muscles that keep our skeletal system upright. What are some misconceptions about Pilates? That it’s only for women. Half of my students are men. Men are looking around at their female partners who do Pilates and seeing them have less pain in the back, stronger core and overall less pain. More men are showing up to do Pilates for all the same reasons. Tell us more about your pre-natal program. Pre-natal and post-natal Pilates is a very different workout than the Classical Pilates workout. Our focus is to not just give a workout, but to help women gain specific support to offset certain health issues that can come up during pregnancy. We work with women in all their different stages of pregnancy and after to offer a lot of information on how to stay strong and connected throughout the pregnancy through specific pelvic floor and breath exercises. We work closely with physical therapists who are solely focused on women’s health to make sure we are bringing the most we can to the women in front of us during a very special but sometimes complicated time. Who is a good candidate for Pilates? Who isn’t? At Aline I teach all of the following: women, men, professional athletes, elderly over 80 years old, those with Parkinson’s and MS, marathon runners, pre- and post-natal and many more. What message do you most want to send about Pilates? Do it because you want to continue doing all the things you love whether it’s running, cycling, squash, tennis, golf, parenting. He tells New York Lifestyles, “I am inspired by fresh, high-quality ingredients with a focus on those that are local, organic and sustainable, and I am intentional about incorporating them into the menu at Gaby. We try to source fish, meats, and produce locally and use organic products whenever possible.”
PRESIDENTS, YANKEES & GIANTS As mentioned, the affable chef ’s background is very solid in the upscale hotel/restaurant biz, and he is proud of the celebrity clientele that has come through Gaby’s doors. “My culinary career began when I was 10 years old, washing dishes. It was there that I fell in love with the fast-paced environment of the kitchen. I ultimately worked my way up in restaurants and attended culinary school and started my own catering company before making the switch to working in hotels. Dining at Gaby is as much an emotional experience as a taste treat. That’s because so much of the food brings back childhood or romantic memories for those who have feasted on French classics like onion soup, Beef Bourguignon, Tuna Niçoise, Scallops Provençale, Crème Brulee and Pot De Crème. The Beef Bourguignon arguably has the most tender chunks of beef you will ever come across and it is served over artfully displayed baby carrots and buttery mashed potatoes. The Duck Breast a L’Orange seems to be a favorite, and the Yelp reviews tell you all you need to know—reviewers have called it “a slice of culinary heaven,” especially when done medium-rare. Salmon served with Lentils De Puy is a favorite with the health-oriented crowd and is one of the dishes that Chef Robert is most proud of. We recently visited Gaby to taste some of these dishes as well as the 14-ounce Strip Steak, which is served on the bone with a heavenly house-made Bordelaise Sauce. To say that the meat melted in our mouth is an understatement. This Strip Steak might be your “go to” entree anytime you are in the Theater District. (There is a price fixe with theatergoers in mind that includes three courses for $39.)
SPRING AHEAD WITH FRESH OFFERINGS Chef Robert also told us there are some special additions to the menu for spring: “Gaby will continue to enhance the guest experience with new French offerings, including Le Goûter, our take on afternoon tea, and L’Apéro Chic, a daily happy hour featuring complimentary canapés with a cocktail or wine order at Mademoiselle Gaby.” The NYL team might just be heading back to give Le Goûter a go as the thought of the French pastries that will be served have us daydreaming already. LINCOLN RISTORANTE LINCOLN CENTER’S CROWN JEWEL By Ruth J. Katz
he old saw that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence needs to be discarded when you consider that the grass on the other side of the fence here, is really up on the roof. And while truly lush, it is the amazing cuisine below this velvety carpet that is the precious emerald—the verdant gem in Lincoln Center’s crown: Lincoln Ristorante, located under the eco-friendly slanted gable of the renovated northern footprint of Lincoln Center. Longtime West Siders remember when there was nary a starred restaurant in the nabe for a memorable, pre-theater meal. Then, the West Side hit pay dirt, with a few stellar boites. But…sadly, the 10023 zip code lost chef Terrance Brennan’s Picholine in 2015, after 22 years, and a year later New Yorkers witnessed chef Bill Telepan’s eponymous restaurant shutter after ten years.

However, the good news is that Lincoln Ristorante, opened in 2010 (and still as sought after as it was ten years ago), is a destination, whether you have tickets for a Lincoln Center event, or just want an extraordinary meal. The restaurant never ceases to reinvent its mouthwatering menu, under the whisks of Chef Shea Gallante and Pastry Chef Richard Capizzi. 68 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2020
ITALIAN WITH A TWIST Gallante has crafted a menu that can best be described as modern Italian fare, emphasizing seasonal ingredients, treated with precise technique. Dishes are modern, while respectful of classic Italian tradition. Expect a twist on the standards, though, whether antipasti, insalate, or dolci: For example, insalata di astice seduces with its abundant lobster, robiolina cheese, blood oranges, roasted beets, and Castelfranc; and there are no humdrum sorbetti or gelati here—but instead, flavors include candy cane, gingerbread, egg nog, cranberry, honeycrisp apple, and mulled wine. And in between that shellfish starter and those temptingly flavored desserts is a menu that tantalizes as readily as it sates. A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, chef Gallante has held prestigious positons at legendary Gotham eateries, such as Felidia and Bouley restaurants, working with legendary toques Lidia Bastianich and David Bouley, among others. He’s also helmed his own restaurants—CRU (one Michelin star and three from The New York Times) and Ciano, which earned two stars from The Times. Pastry Chef Capizzi has an equally outstanding CV, having seasoned his pastry whisk under luminaries Thomas Keller and Jean Louis Palladin. He was named pastry sous-chef for the opening of the celebrated eatery Per Se and two years later assumed the role of pastry chef at both Per Se and Bouchon Bakery. Simply put: You could not have a more skilled and innovative team in the kitchen.

And the dishes reflect that care, creativity, and adventure. Even the brunch menu will astonish. Simple prosciutto and figs are elevated to ambrosia with top-flight Prosciutto di San Daniele, Grilled Figs, Cucumbers, Frisee, and a Seasonal Mostarda. For a main brunch course, try the Veal-Ricotta Meatballs, Anson Mills Polenta à la Marinara, Buffalo Mozzarella, and Parmigiano Reggiano. Expect service to be solicitous without being meddlesome. Our waiter was about the only server we’ve had in recent memory who actually listened to my dining companion’s request that his second glass of wine be served with his main course; usually, it is brought immediately after the request, when the first glass is whisked away, or it’s never brought. Parenthetically, the wine list features over 400 labels, with classic and new Italian offerings. The pleasant dining room is split into two main sections, with the bar in the middle. (Ask about the famous Negronis, speaking of the bar.) The eastern section is glass-enclosed and provides a view of the Plaza while the larger dining area, on the other side of the airy, open-plan kitchen, is further west, with a better view of the reflecting pool and the Thomas Moore sculpture. There is room for a halfdozen or so diners to sup at the bar, and in that area there are a few tables for service. The building itself and the restaurant’s gracious interior were designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro; the result is precisely what you’d expect from such a fabled architectural and design firm. The restaurant is owned by the Patina Restaurant Group, proprietors of over 60 eateries in New York, Los Angeles, and Florida, among its geographic footprint. he left us shockingly, unfairly so abruptly 20+ years ago. We miss all that she could have become so drastically. Yet our fascination with this very modern princess does more than linger; it’s holding the center stage on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre. Diana, A True Musical Story, brings us face to face with Diana, Princess of Wales. It shows us how she defied expectations, rocked the royals, and captured her nation’s heart as she revealed her heartbreak, struggling to survive like hunted prey pursued by the glare of the flashbulbs and in the end, overcome by the tawdriness of the tabloids. MARRIAGE STORY
Making his Broadway debut under the direction of Tony Award-winner Christopher Ashley (Come From Away), the exceptionally attractive Roe Hartrampf (Boardwalk Empire) plays Prince Charles. Speaking with him about his role as a character who could easily be seen as a villain, he shares that he wanted to “humanize” this royal. “It is not for me to pass judgment on this man, although I will say the role was a big challenge, daunting, in fact,” says Hartrampf. “What becomes clear when you see the show is that at one point in time, they had a genuine affection for each other. They so loved the boys—that was a vital connection.” Hartrampf continues, “When you see the show you believe—or want so much to believe—that there was a moment when it seemed that the marriage might work. But sustaining their relationship long term just proved too difficult. Diana was 19 years old when they got married. She had almost no experience with life—much less any comprehension of what it meant to be suddenly expected to rise above the rest to become the most extraordinary princess in the world. Charles had already had a lifetime of being royal: he grew up in the monarchy. Although there are some light-hearted moments in the show, Charles and Diana tragically just had so much miscommunication. Much as he may have wanted to, he couldn’t understand Diana. Yet even though he is a controversial figure, I want to stand up for him, defend him, and be protective of him. After all, people who live in the public eye are seen with a harsher view; living in a fishbowl life becomes distorted. Of course, today it does seem as if history is repeating itself, but that’s another story for another time.” 70 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2020
Jeanna de Waal plays Diana. As the show opens, she wryly observes, “You know what I was thinking right here, at this moment? Before I agreed to all ‘this’— perhaps I should’ve dated him more than 13 times.” Is this engaging musical a cautionary tale? No. It is warm, authentic, poignant, and revealing—just a story about a girl who loved a boy who didn’t love her. Unfortunately, the ups and downs of their romance played out around the world as tabloid fodder.
MUSIC MOVES US
You might expect that telling Diana’s story through music would rely on recycled pop hits from her era, but that is not the case, though there may be a bit of a retro reference in the music; it is fresh and original. The score (from Rock and Roll Hall of Famer keyboardist David Bryan and Tony Award winner Joe DiPietro) does have moments of seriously good fun. After all, Diana did have a sense of humor. You may leave the theater humming “Him & Her (& Him & Her),” “Perfect Princess,” “Happiness,” and “The Dress.”
THE HUMAN TOUCH
The show which comes to Broadway from the La Jolla Playhouse in California, does as Hartrampf observes, “humanize” the royals as it weaves together universal themes of love, rejection, adultery, and fame to tell the story of one of the most famous women of the 20th century in a way that pays homage to her legacy yet remains enjoyable and upbeat. Though the ending may be tragic, this American musical continues engaging us all with choreography by Olivier Award winner and Tony Award nominee Kelly Devine (Come From Away). Couple that with an epic, sweeping contemporary score with music supervision and arrangements by Olivier Award winner Ian Eisendrath (Come From Away). Two-time Tony Award winner Judy Kaye is something to see as Queen Elizabeth and Barbara Cartland (Diana’s real-life stepgrandmother), dual roles striking a comic note that genuinely resonates. Erin Davie is Camilla Parker Bowles, the other woman in the marriage, the one who fits with Charles as comfortably as favorite slippers. If Diana’s dream was to marry a prince, or rather The Prince, Charles’ idea was never to fully commit to this vulnerable though game-changing English Rose. Sadly at the end of the day, both their dreams did come true.

The sets by Tony Award winner David Zinn are remarkable when it comes to presenting Diana’s extraordinary humanitarian work. Their starkness adds a startling, even horrifying dimension. Costume designer William Ivey Long recreates her wardrobe (yes, even the iconic wedding dress) visually transforming Diana from a gawky teen into an international fashion star. Inevitably, Diana became a designer’s dream, a woman owning her style so superbly no wonder the Paparazzi couldn’t get enough of her. At the Longacre Theatre. DEVASTATING DRAMAS ESCAPE FROM PRETORIA PG-13 Daniel Radcliffe stars in this tense prison drama set in South Africa during the time of apartheid there, as a white man whose actions in support of the oppressed black population sends him into a brutal jail. But in this true-life tale written and directed by Brit Francis Annan and co-starring Ian Hart and Daniel Webber, hope remains in a place that seems incredibly bleak in this edge-ofyour-seat drama. THE ROADS NOT TAKEN R If you’ve seen any of directorwriter Sally Potter’s films (Orlando, The Man Who Cried), you’ll know to expect the unexpected from her. In this time-bending tale, Javier Bardem and Elle Fanning star as father and daughter on a surreal journey of what is, was and could have been in their lives. Salma Hayek and Laura Linney are along for the ride, too. A QUIET PLACE PART II Not yet rated Silence abounds once again in this sequel to one of the cleverest science fiction-horror films to come along in years. As Evelyn Abbott (Emily Blunt) struggles with the loss of her husband (John Krasinski, who wrote and directed both the first and this sequel), the birth of her baby and the welfare of her two other children, she knows quiet is key. For the alien creatures that threaten her family are led by sound, which means this Part II installation will likely be as silent and scary as the original. THE WAY BACK Not yet rated Ben Affleck gets serious in this intensely personal drama about an alcoholic basketball star who returns to his hometown high school as the boys’ team coach. FAMILY EXCITEMENT BLOODSHOT PG-13 Superheroes come in all sorts and with Bloodshot, a new comicbook company throws its hat into the cinematic ring. Valiant Comics and Sony Pictures bring Vin Diesel into the role of Bloodshot, a character created back in 1992, to the big screen with the hopes of creating a new franchise that teens and adults will love. This guy’s a soldier who was killed, then brought back to life as a superhuman superhero. Outlander star Sam Heughan co-stars, along with Eliza Gonzalez and Guy Pearce. ONWARD PG Pack up the kids and head to the multiplex, for Pixar is back with a new animated fantasy feature! This one’s set in a fantasy world that’s familiar yet not, and follows two teenagers (voiced by Tom Holland and Chris Pratt) who find a magical way to reconnect with their father. Lots of action, laughs and family fun are found here – just like in all the Pixar movies. MULAN Not yet rated Mulan is the next Disney animated film (the original released in 1998) to return to the big screen as a live-action movie. Starring Chinese actress Yifei Liu in the title role in the legendary ancient tale of a female warrior who fought alongside men disguised as one of them in order to save her father, this follows the original film very closely. Familiar faces like Jet Li, Tzi Ma, Rosalind Chao and Jason Scott Lee round out the cast. MY SPY PG-13 When an undercover CIA agent (Dave Bautista) runs into a nine-year-old girl who’s as clever as he is, it makes for the perfect premise for some funny situations. This fascinating two-part 2020 BBC production of The Pale Horse proves this fact once again. Rufus Sewell stars as a man investigating the strange death of a young woman, soon discovering that there are more murders to come, witches in the deadly mix, and more in weirdness in a quiet English village. It’s quintessential, Christie. LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE Hulu Arson is the crime at the heart of Little Fires Everywhere, the new adaptation of Celeste Ng’s award-winning novel that stars Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington (who both served as producers on the eightepisode series as well). All about two intertwined families living in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and how the mysteries of their pasts intersect with their present lives, there are layers of secrets revealed as the tale unfolds. SPENSER CONFIDENTIAL Netflix Lovers of Robert B. Parker’s Spenser novels, rejoice! That rough-and-tumble Boston P.I. is back (anyone remember Spenser: For Hire, the great 1980s TV series that starred Robert Urich), this time played by real Boston native Mark Wahlberg in this Netflix crime caper. Winston Duke plays Hawk, his trusted sidekick and muscle man, in this yarn that fans are hoping marks the first of many Spenser stories to come.
ALL HAIL STRONG WOMEN HILLARY Hulu This four-part documentary series explores the life and extraordinary career of Hillary Rodham Clinton, told with archival footage as well as intimate interviews with Clinton, her husband Bill, daughter Chelsea and many others. SELF MADE: INSPIRED BY THE LIFE OF MADAM C. J. WALKER Netflix This fascinating biopic follows the legendary life of Madam C. J. Walker, one of the first women in America to become a self-made millionaire. The African-American was born free into a Louisiana slave family (she was the first of her family to be born after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect), orphaned at seven, and married at 14. Her amazing success story as an entrepreneur who created hair care and beauty products for black women is incredible. DIG INTO DRAMAS AMAZING STORIES Apple+ It has been 35 years since Steven Spielberg first created his Amazing Stories TV series, which grabbed numerous Emmy Awards and accolades along the way. Expect many familiar faces—both in front of and behind the camera—in this anthology series designed to spark your imagination differently each time. COUNCIL OF DADS NBC Inspired by the book of the same name, Council of Dads is all about coming to terms with dying, as a father of five has a health scare that leads him to enlist his best friends (the “counci”) to agree to step in as dads to his kids if need be. This diverse group of people ends up finding out that they all have a lot in common in this emotional drama. Sarah Wayne Callies, Clive Standen, and Tom Everett Scott lead the cast. rederic Fekkai is synonymous with style. His namesake salon, with locations throughout the U.S., has been a temple of beauty for years, popular with celebs, socialites, executives, VIPs, and those looking for chic transformations. But his expertise extends beyond the sheers. He and his wife, Shirin, a veteran of Yves St. Laurent and Tom Ford, recently infused the venerated beauty brand Bastide with their exquisite and intuitive sense of elegance based around simple, quintessential virtues: water, plants, light, and balance. Their acquisition of the 25-yearold beauty line, founded in Fekkai’s hometown Aix-en-Provence in France, now broadens a vision from hair care to skincare. How would you describe Bastide? Shirin: Bastide is a house of beauty and wellness inspired by the lifestyle of Aix-en-Provence. We celebrate French beauty through our fragrances, skincare, and beautiful candles. What inspired you to take on the brand? Shirin: When we moved back to Provence, we started eating from the garden and living closer to nature. It made our whole family look and feel amazing, and we knew we wanted to share that with the world. Frédéric: Even when we returned to New York, we realized how important it is to carefully select what we’re eating and pay attention to the health of ourselves and our planet. This helped us define our mission for Bastide: to bring clean beauty inspired by the lifestyle of Aix-en-Provence. How is it different than what you have done before under the Fekkai label? Frédéric: With the Fekkai label, we created the first luxury hair care line inspired by our stylists at the salon. We were able to take this concept and scale it to be sold in mass retailers such as Target and Ulta. With Bastide, Shirin and I created a lifestyle brand with multiple categories that transport the customer to Provence through the scents, the packaging, and the sensorial formulas. We acquired the company Côte Bastide in 2015 and relaunched in 2016 as Bastide— we wanted to maintain the heritage of the brand while modernizing the packaging and formulas for today’s customer. In such a crowded skincare market, how do you distinguish Bastide? Shirin: We developed every Bastide product to be something you reach for simply because it makes you feel amazing—from the texture to the scent. Your beauty routine is a moment for self-care, and we want our customers to feel like Bastide enhances those rituals and pampers from head to toe. Frédéric: I don’t believe in overnight miracles or invasive treatments. What are your plans for growing the brand? Frédéric: Our focus is to build a community around the brand that will enter the world of Bastide and be a part of our journey as we continue to scale. We’re working on curating every touchpoint for the customer, from our website to our distribution points. We’ve also expanded into new categories recently and will continue to develop product innovations while bringing our true vision of Provence to the market. What are Bastide’s signature products? Shirin: The Huile Seche Epatante Brilliant Dry Oil Mist has been our hero from day one. It’s a gorgeous combination of oils that hydrates the skin and gives it that “glow du sud” that Provence is known for. It also has a beautiful orange blossom flower fragrance that lingers on the skin and reminds you of summers spent under the sun. It’s our number one seller—our customers love that they can use it on the skin, as a fragrance and in their hair for a little nourishment. What are the trends in skincare? What are you most excited about? Shirin: We look to our customers to tell us what they value in products and what they’re looking for next. MY NEW YORK STORY By Rich Schulhoff, CEO of Brooklyn MLS
ew York City is one of the hottest housing markets in the U.S., so it’s no surprise that the Brooklyn real estate market continues to remain active as a new decade begins. For the past 15 years, I’ve been the CEO of the Brooklyn MLS (Multiple Listing Service) and Brooklyn Board of Realtors. Prior to coming here, I served as Communications Director for the Staten Island Board of Realtors and their MLS. But it wasn’t always real estate. Before delving into the business, I spent 25 years in television, mostly in network sports as a writer and producer, for which I won an Emmy in 1992. I’ve always been fascinated with the real estate market, especially bearing witness to the growth and development of the different neighborhoods. Throughout my tenure, I’ve witnessed Brooklyn’s continuous growth. A favored market for a long time, one might expect a slight decline when it comes not only to price but days on the market. The fact that it has held strong proves how active the Brooklyn real estate market is. 78 | OUR CITY, YOUR LIFE | MARCH 2020

A BOROUGH’S APPEAL While statistics in other boroughs may tell a slightly different story, Brooklyn continues to be a place where people want to put down roots. A borough of neighborhoods, it is communityoriented, making it an attractive location to raise a family while still being accessible to areas like Manhattan. Long established Brooklyn neighborhoods continue to rise in value as well as popularity, and that includes Bay Ridge, an area that has become the ultimate melting pot. The different ethnicities that make up Bay Ridge is what has led to its strength, and it will continue to remain a hot spot for buyers. Other neighborhoods about to explode, include East New York and Greenpoint, a stone’s throw away from Manhattan and currently a bit more affordable than its next-door neighbor, Williamsburg. A telltale sign that East New York is on the verge of expansion is due in part to the new developments in the area. Whenever businesses, especially restaurants, start up in areas that have been otherwise neglected, communities begin to transform with residents settling in. Additional locations throughout the borough that will continue to see growth in 2020 are Coney Island and its neighbor, Brighton Beach, thanks in part to significant developers. Co-ops and condos are being developed along Coney Island Avenue, offering fantastic views of the ocean. Along with new restaurants and the revitalization of the famous Coney Island Amusement Park all things point in the right direction. Along with the development of new buildings is the likelihood of existing rentals converting either to condos or coops. While this is thought to be a general trend, there isn’t a specific area per se. The thought process behind the idea: people know the value in Brooklyn is high, and mortgage rates are currently low.

NUMBERS TELL A STORY In reviewing the last two years, statistics indicate that not only has the median price for a single-family home increased, but days on the market also decreased, with a similar pattern for multi-family dwellings. According to a report issued by the Brooklyn MLS for 2019, the median price for a single-family home in 2019 sold for $820.000, increasing over $100,000 from 2018. Along with an increase in price, days on the market decreased from 80 to 72 days. In looking at the sale of multi-family homes in 2019, prices dropped moderately (less than 5 percent). In 2018, the median price was $1.25 million, dipping slightly to $1.2 million a year later, while days on the market only increased by one day from one year to the next. As a borough, Brooklyn is maintaining its ascent in the real estate industry as being one of the most secure markets in the country. As we move further into 2020, there shouldn’t be much more of an increase; rather, potential buyers will see steady pricing throughout the year.
ONE LAST NOTE As the country prepares for the upcoming election, the question on people’s minds is, “how will this affect the real estate market?” Elections do make a difference; people look at them as a sign of the country moving one way or another, and that ultimately affects the market. Once we move closer to 2021, there is a good chance homebuyers, and investors may adopt more of a wait-and-see approach when it comes to real estate. This is my New York and Brooklyn is a fabulous place to live. The borough continues to be a place where people want to live. As more people realize the advantages to real estate from an investment standpoint, the demand for property will continue. Coney Island

TIME OUT WITH… SILVIA FRIESER By Harry Brads
s president and executive director of the Viennese Opera Ball, Silvia Frieser oversees one of the most glamourous galas of the year. The coveted annual white-tie charity gala celebrates the cultural and economic relationships between Austria and America, connecting two continents, two cities, and two centuries in one glamorous night. It was founded by Austrians immigrating to the U.S. 65 years ago and is a tribute to both Vienna and their host city, New York. The gala draws an international audience that includes diplomats and dignitaries, and professionals with performances by Metropolitan Opera singers, the Viennese Opera Ball Orchestra, The West Point Color Guard, and many more surprises that add to a delightful evening. Additionally, the Viennese Opera Ball supports charitable projects connected to the communities in New York and Vienna. This year’s 65th gala was held last month at Cipriani 42nd Street. New York Lifestyles sat down with Silva Frieser to discuss her career and the importance of the Viennese Opera Ball. Tell us your connection with Austria. I was born and raised in beautiful Vienna, Austria. I consider myself very fortunate to have grown up in a city full of history, old traditions, culture, and music. I was fortunate to be nurtured by parents who, by now, have been married for over 54 years. Along with my sister, who is my best friend, life in Austria was sweet and easy, spending many holidays by the Austrian lakes and mountains. How did you become involved with the Viennese Opera Ball? It all started at the Austrian finance company, Raiffeisen Bank International New York, in January 2000. During my 17 years with the firm, managing the company’s events and marketing activities, I was also on the executive board of the Viennese Opera Ball since 2001. When I learned that the company would close in 2017, and I had the opportunity to take over the Viennese Opera Ball, there was no question. In my new role, I have been able to benefit from my extensive events and marketing experience, and from my non-profit experience during the years, I led the U.S. Austrian Chamber of Commerce as President on a pro bono basis from 2015 to 2018. Tell us the charitable aspects of the Viennese Opera Ball. The Ball raises funds for the music therapy program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with the support of Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research. It is so important to us to help bring some joy into the lives of cancer patients who stay in the hospital by providing the much-loved music program to them. Having fun and enjoying the Viennese Opera Ball is nice, but it wouldn’t be so meaningful to our guests without the support of a good cause.
Tell us about this year’s Opera Ball? The 2020 gala was an extraordinary occasion celebrating such a long-standing tradition of Austrian-American relations in New York City. We heard individual performances by international opera stars Ewa Plonka, Michael Spyres, Corinne Winters, and Limmie Pulliam. The theme of the night was Nessun Dorma, None Shall Sleep, the famous aria of Puccini’s last opera Turandot, and was performed by opera singer Limmie Pulliam. And for the very first time, the Viennese Opera Ball Orchestra led under our esteemed Maestro Matthias Fletzberger performed. When you’re not working, what are some of your favorite activities? Of course, I love the Metropolitan Opera, and I try to go four times a year. But I enjoy all the attractions the city has to offer, the wide variety of international restaurants, galleries, museums, and concerts. Since I grew up in nature, I love spending time in Central Park, the green lung of the city— even when it snows or rains. Where do you see yourself and the Viennese Opera Ball in the next five years? In the past, we have brought the Viennese Opera Ball to another level with the help of significant support of the international opera singers and, of course, of our generous guests, donors, and sponsors. In the next five years, I would like to invite even more international guests, as well as Austrian but also American companies to join our gala. The Ball is a platform for cultural and economic exchange and an event for American philanthropists and New York’s high-society where you are part of a truly unique and spectacular night while supporting a good cause.
